From Magnum - disgorged March 2019 - white flowers and patisserie/bakery notes on the nose. Healthy acidity. A bit coiled up compared to several bottles enjoyed on release that were stunning. I still have high hopes for aging potential of this Cuvée.

Wow, opened a magnum of this beautiful wine for my 55th bday. DG 06/2017, made of 80% Chardonnay and 20% PN. Lovely, drinking so nicely right now, showing citrus, green apple, chalk, salinity, white pepper and lime. Gorgeous acidity and crisp, long finish that is regal and all-enveloping. Drink now through 2028+. Gorgeous.

This is lovely, and drinking very well, with a super combination of buttered toast and lime as well as good length. Very clean despite the depth of flavour. Often bottles opened in the garden at a social occasion don't really make themselves noticed, but this one passed that test.

This was the final wine in a big lineup and didn't get the attention it deserved but it was in the running for wine of the night. Vilmart is consistent regarding balance this one shows that character. I think it's actually a very good value which is to be able to say about champagne. Lime and chalk.

Paul's Annual Champagne Tasting (2023 edition, all from Magnum) (At Paul's Place): There are multiple disgorgements of this wine, and if I take my past notes as accurate, then there are disgorgements over three years (2017 - 2019). The bottle yesterday was March 2019, which means almost 5 years on the lees. The usual 80% Chard and 20% PN. Man, every time I have this wine I just revere how good it tastes. A slice green apple freshness with lemon, orange and lime zest. This disgorgement finishes with the chalk signature of the site, clean yet rich, with the evident structure of what 2013 Vilmart consistently shows me (same with Coeur de Cuvee). I have to believe this vintage of GCdO is going to age really well, and my remaining 750s I will sample slowly over the next many years. Excellent wine again.

Champagne In My Backyard (mostly blind) (My House): January 2018 disgorgement, from the bottles sourced from B-21 last Fall. The usual 80/20 Chard/Pinot Noir for those who may not know the composition. Kumquat, golden apple, apricot and lime. Finishes with a chalky, tense presence with orange jam/lime. Saved the remainder and enjoyed over two additional days. The wine remained fresh and zesty with green apple, lime and tangerine. Best way I can describe it is from my third day note which says 'concentrated'. There is just a zesty tang that marries to the concentration, creating a long finish. I really like the 2013 Vilmart cuvees, and for those who either don't know the wine well, or have been thinking you want to try it, go grab some of this 2013 GCdO while it is still around. You get 10 years of age already achieved, for a wine that has no signs of reaching its ascent yet.

Opened by BillHike. 80% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Noir. Disgorged December 2017. An excellent sparkling wine. Pale straw color with a fine bead. A chalky character with green apple and citrus notes. Crisp and clean finish. 94 points.

I have enjoyed nearly a case of this vintage, it's just a dynamite bottle of wine. This was the January 2018 disgorgement with the usual ratio of 80/20, Chard/Pinot. Bright green apple, tangerines, honey, all of it rich yet lively. Even a dash of nutmeg in the finish. It's hard not to keep firing down taste after taste of this wine because of the joy it transmits to me. Acid, mineral, fruit, honey....classic and beautiful GCdO.

Bookclub--Wines Tasted Blind (Foretti's in Corona Del Mar): Disgorged October 2017, and as usual 80% Chard and 20% Pinot Noir. I served this blind alongside the 2013 Coeur de Cuvee (also blind), with the intention to see how different the wines are (or not). I didn't take notes last night but my recall was what I kind of expected. The GCd'O seemed more generous, richer and the CdC was more powerful, more structured and intensity. The table of 7 we had seemed split to me in which they preferred. I liked both, but again for different reasons. Even though they are from the same plot (Blanches Voies), the additional vine age, length on the lees, newer wood and longer post-disgorgement time before release all seems to ratchet up the intensity of the CdC, leaving the GCd'O richer and flashier.

October 2017 disgorgement this time. 80% Chard / 20% Pinot Noir, the usual composition for GCdO. Hot dang, this is showing good. Energy, richness, youthful...it's all present. The aromatics on this bottle are floral, a white flower and citrus blossom with wet slate too. The texture? Drinking this with about 20 mins of air and 65f room temp, there is a wealth of texture here. Lemon oil, orange rind, golden apple, even tangy pineapple and some mango lurking here, too. Finishing with some prickly acidity, crunchy lime, a orange preserve and the same wet slate note that is in the aromatic. Texturally, this is just a powerhouse of flavor and length. Utterly fantastic, and I have to believe that there is a long curve on this going forward for aging and further positive development. Straight up winner, and I am going to source a few more as this kind of wine deserves more room in the cellar, bottles to track and share over time. Onto the list for WOTY 2022.

Disgorged 10/17, 80/20 blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Fresh green apple tartness mixes with baked apple galette flavors (fruit and pastry together). Secondary oak lurks underneath the primary flavors without intruding. No malolactic fermentation and oak aging make this wine special. Very tasty, worth getting again!

This was the June 2017 disgorgement. Man, this was good. It's got length and balance that is spot-on in the zone. Flavors of tangerine, orange, golden apple and the signature beautiful acidity of Laurent's wines. Finishes with some chalk essence and that lovely citrus flavor. Bottle after bottle, especially in the top end cuvees like GCdO and Coeur de Cuvee, Laurent continues to churn out wines of real majesty. I simply run out of flattery for these wines. Bravo, Laurent.

I keep looking around.... sadly this is my last Vilmart. Of any kind. Say whaaat? Medium bubbles. Lemon and Asian pear nose. Entry of lemon rind, unripe peach, Bartlett pear. Middle has a guava and melon. The finish is a little tart but is very satisfying along with all the more brambly pear and lemongrass notes. A satisfying champers indeed. Very reductive type of champagne which is usually the preference. Cellar for 5-7 or drink now.

Nose: The nose is deep, fresh, and balanced with red and green apples, pears, white flowers, biscuits, warm dough, mint, ginger, and crushed rocks. There is a ton going on already with this showing an electricity to the tones.
Taste: The feel is Medium/full bodied with racy, high acidity. The feel is lively and balanced with red and green apples, mint, white flowers, pears, ginger, warm dough, and crushed rocks.
Overall: While this is clearly youthful, it's also extremely good. There is a lot of freshness and vibrancy across the nose and palate with just a kiss of autolytics. This will likely benefit from another 3-5 years of aging before it's fully ready to go.

80% Chard, 20% Pinot Noir. This bottle was my first from the December 2017 disgorgement (all previous bottles have been the June 2017 disgorgement). Based on what I tasted last night in my glass, this bottle impressed me above the other previous because of the stuffing and structure. There was more tension in this bottling, with a distinct lime peel/zest note (this is part of the tactile feel), along with orange and a slatey mineral. It finishes with the Vilmart signature kiss of honey and acidity. Consistently great Champagnes, whether it's Rubis, Cellier, CdC, etc.

It's not hard to polish off a wine like this at one time, but I managed to spread it over two days. Disgorged June 2017, with the consistent composition of 80% Chard / 20% PN, with around 7 g/l dosage and just under 4 years on the lees, all the usual inputs for Grand Cellier d'Or. This drinks great chilled or warm. Green apple, a richness that seems honeyed when warm, with tangerine and a little bit of red berry. Like many Vilmart I have written about in the past, this bottle too shows the requisite bright acidity and freshness. It's these two qualities, along with the richness and fruit balance, that makes Vilmart one of my absolute favorites from Champagne. It finishes with some structure that suggests the wine will be ageworthy, yet I found no guilt in finishing this wine now, as it drinks so good. Beautiful.
Wasn't crazy about this one. To me, the overwhelming citrus acidity masked the rest of the chardonnay fruit. Maybe will improve with time but this was a minor disappointment.

No formal TN, but my family consumed this over a few nights and it was lovely, as always. On the nose, fresh paint, lees, apples and lemons, hazelnuts and bread, all the requisite parts. On the palate, full and complex, with citrus and apple fruits coming through, around the chalk, soil, and autolytic notes. Bright acidity, beautiful depth and breed, long finish. Drink now through 2025+.

Champagne Event (Wine Exchange in Santa Ana): My WOTD for the tasting. Green apple, some toast from the wood with a cool mineral note running through the palate and finish. Has the beautiful Vilmart acidity running through it, complementing the fruit, rendering an elegant balance that is excellent. Picked up a few more of these for the cellar, as this is a great vintage for GCdO.

What an elegant drink. Brioche and a sweet nose, a wonderful mousse feel in the mouth, that gave way to a fullness of lemons and apples. There's plenty of acidity that cleans, cleanses and freshens your palate that makes you sip more and more. This is built to age and is wonderful now, what will this be like in another 5 years? I will be able to tell you as I have 5 bottles left. The real question is will I be able to resist? At £60 @laywheeler it's not an everyday drink but well worth the price for a celebration champers. 93-94 points

Same bottle data as the bottle we tasted at the winery. Disgorged 06/2017, 80 Chard, 20 PN. This is fantastic, with a distinct lemon peel and mineral, salty undercurrent that lengthens across my palate and into the finish. Green apple, light grapefruit, too. The intensity on this vintage is excellent, with beautiful balance and the grip of the mineral in the finish. Excellent.

4th of 4 champagnes - accompanying caviar, iberico ham & freshly prepared sushi dinner. Served side by side with the '05 D.P. Rose, Krug MV and '06 D.P. - this is clearly a leaner more acid driven style. I love the raciness and tension in this with the minerality and salinity really coming through - it drinks so well with the fresh sushi. I would love to try this with another 5-10 years of age - as I think the complexity will continue to develop. My second favorite of the flight tonight.

Tasted after NV Grand Cellier. A bit more depth on the nose in comparison, more detail. White stone fruit, citrus fruit, green apple, almonds, brioche, crushed stones. Well structured and precise on the palate, mineral, vibrant, with good richness of fruit and excellent length. Should improve. 92-93+

Well, I guess I will go first and be the first TN author. Disgorged 06/2017. 80% Chard / 20% PN. Dosage 7 g/l. This shows the structure, what I'd expect from the C d' Or. I can sense the grip in the palate. Lemon peel, cut green apple, with a salty, mineral/chalk finish. Of the three wines we tasted today, this is for sure the most complex and coiled. Finishes with citrus peel, some honey and some fennel and lemon/lime. This ought to be a good version of the cuvee.

Agree with Frank's tasting note below. First bottle of Vilmart and it was fantastic. Cut green apple, great acidity, freshness and long finish. Will definitely purchase more.

Beautiful.

Accidentally grabbed this because labels are similar to the non NV very tight better the next day needs a few years to get creamy...

Toasty brioche, lemon and apple on the nose. Tart lemon palate, tarter finish, high acid but still good balance. Long finish. Very good quality at this level.

Wine Dinner (Blue Plate, SF): Medium intensity nose, slight brioche, slight apple; palate is medium bodied, coarser mousse than I was expecting, high acid, fresh; medium finish. Very nice champagne, but I think still a bit pricey. 91

Vin Chicago Anniversary Tasting and Sale (Vin Chicago - Highland Park IL): Tasting, brief note. Bright and energetic throughout, with lemon, lime, background floral hints and Chablis-like minerality. Precise and so clean. Good now, clearly with upside. 80% Chardonnay, which dominates nicely, everything else in well designed supporting roles.

Winorama: A winter in Wineland III; 1/4/2019-1/13/2019 (Portland/Willamette, Eureka, Napa): I'm always impressed the way champagne can pair with just about everything and we put it through the paces here. No detailed notes, but just a well done champagne. Very young. This has the structure to age. Enjoyable.
