This was yet another excellent vintage in today's vertical, but compared to 2000 it was more reserved and less opulent. There's a lot of structure here, and I suspect this is the better wine for the long haul, where 2000 has probably shown us most/all it has to show. I'd be eager to try 2001 again in 5+ years.

Red Burgundy GC 01 (London): Single blind in a flight of 4 (others being Musigny 01s from Vogue and Laurent and MG CdV 01) this to me was the best wine of this flight and I guessed this correctly, edging out the Vogue (just) and the MG. I loved the engaging slightly old school rawness of the nose that still exuded enough elegance, the effortless palate shows a potpourri of red fruits, earth and herbs and is supremely elegant. It's already very pleasurable and will probably improve for another 5 years but it's in a fine spot today. My wine #4 of the night.

Wine Tasted at Acker Auction (Marea - New York NY): Small glass, brief note. Amazingly elegant, this was tough to fully appreciate in the few minutes in glass. Bright red fruit with brilliant textures and great length, my few sips made me want more.

Drinking Some Great Mugnier as an Hommage to Becky Wasserman (Republique - Los Angeles CA): In 99/01/02/05 vertical, preceded by the same vintages of Amoureuses. Bright red fruit throughout with a muscular feel, but simultaneously bright and dancing elegantly. So captivating and so much here, this is another wine that has continued to improve through the decades, and was barely ahead of the 2002 vintage as my Wine of the Night.

Opened a couple of hours ahead. Ethereal nose of red fruits. Medium-to-dark color, but translucent. Medium body that just caressed the palate with good structure that wasn't obtrusive. This seems like it's just on the front end of prime drinkability but will last.

From magnum this was quite tight to begin with. There was some menthol and meat and then all of the pretty red and blue things came to the fore. It had a velvety feel against the gums and possessed great volume and perfect balance. There was a hint of floral spice and mint and plenty of mineral to the back-end.

It takes a good three hours to blossom. Bouquet, stems, red fruit, potpourri and minerals. Crystallized purity and transperency in combination of weightless power. Elegance at its fineness for a Musigny. Always my reference point vintage for his Musigny.

Tasted blind, this wine had a purple/red center with red rims (that was quite dark for a Burgundy). The medium+ intensity nose put forth cherries, tan spices, rhubarb, and minerals.
In the mouth, this wine was still young and tight with huge acidity, rounded tannin, and great length.
This wine was very impressive. I would not hesitate to open it at breakfast for an evening tasting. It could well pick up 2-3 points with 10+ years in the cellar.

Heavenly. Harmonious raspberries, red roses, and cream on the nose, slightly stemmy. Even better on the palate - more complex, more intense, more focused; raspberry and cream but also intense red spice notes, hugely expansive inner mouth perfume that just dances across the palate. This is really, really, really good. This evokes an emotional response, even tasted blind - you really don’t need the label to be carried away here. And I doubt it’s even at peak. 97-98

nose- light and pure. perhaps cranberry mouth - lovely. harmonious lighter red fruit spectrum with a vibrancy on the palate. the most compelling musigny i have had to date, though the others had less age and were mostly de Vogue.

- Vibrant medium ruby. Excellent blue flowers aromas, intermixed w sweet fruits, damp forest. 60mins later this has developed more herbaceous notes, which is not upleasant but took away the sweet seductive sensation and purity.
- Sweet entry, coated on the side of the palate with very sensual sweetness, acidity, delicate minerality with inner perfume and the best possible silky mouthfeel that a good Musigny should be, power without weight as they said. However there is also this intense bitterness / herbaceous notes (licorice, drier rosemary?) gripping on the mid palate as the wine flows which to me distracted the overall experience. Still, a privilege to drink a Mugnier Musigny at its drinking window.

Floral and pretty on the nose and palate. While there was alluring sweet red fruit on the palate, it had some undertone spicy and herbs. A great Musigny to drink now. 96-97

2001 Red Burgundy at Chez Hugo (Chez Hugo, Baltimore): More subtle and savory than the Vogue Bonnes Mares. On the nose, beautiful cherry fruit, loaminess, and wonderful florals. This has power and structure but it is hidden in its lacy exterior. Knock you over with a feather like power. Contrasts with plenty of overused but int his case appropriate metaphor. Sap and density. power without weight. This has the iron fist in a velvet glove feel. Filigree fine texture, elegant yet with hidden power. Very long on the back end. Terrific wine drinking in a great spot with no fear of decline soon. Man do I wish I could still buy this wine nowadays.

2001 Red Burgundy Retrospective (Chez Hugo - Baltimore): Absolutely gorgeous nose displaying subtle pure red and black fruit, blackberry, strawberry, sugar coated raspberry, anise, cinnamon, sautéed mushroom, a hint of sous bois, sap and earth. Exceptional balance and finesse, very finely layered rich yet subtle and pure red and black fruit, elegant, precise, detailed, weightless and sensual, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, very fine tannins and an incredible long subtle black fruit driven finish. This is a perfectly mature classic Musigny that is drinking incredibly.

Burgundy Dinner with Friends (Tasting Blind) (Officine Brera - Los Angeles CA): Tasted double blind. All red fruit with good ripeness, but great balance and textural genius. Starts off charming and pretty, then expands into a nearly weightless and long finish. I correctly identified this as Musigny, thinking it either 1998 or 2001, but did not correctly identify the producer.

Mugnier Musigny Dinner (Blue Hill (NYC)): A surprising brett hanging over this for a second at first, but blows off quickly into an expressive cherry cola and dark berry nose. Totally comparable to the bottle a month or so ago with a bold and energetic projection of pure cherry fruit. Once that bizarre whiff of barnyard is gone this nose is booming. Palate is vibrant and immediately delicious. Youthful and still mostly primary but so soft and elegant. Terrific.

Expressive nose, but very delicate and elegant perfume, cool blueberry and damp soil minerality. With more air this is gaining an elegant Chambolle spice in the blackberry and dark cherry aroma. Flickers of sulphur? Some darker cherry and coffee character too. Clean and pure on the palate. Good weight and great blackberry power lurking. I've always found Mugnier stylistically very soft and delicate, but this bottle was a particularly big and energetic showing, even standing up to an '01 DRC RSV alongside.

Had this again, the second half from the original 750ml which was immediately siphoned off in half bottle and recorked. similar to the prior night though this time it started and ended with and lot of brute power. It's simply too feral for my taste to call it enjoyable, but there is clearly a succulence to the fruit lurking below the structure. Would give it a 90-92 rating purely as is, with much room for improvement

Started out open and over 2-3 hours you could track its evolution to something more backward and powerful as strawberry and roses gave way to darker cherry and stems - I realize a lot of destemming is typically done but the wine retained this characteristic. The fruit maintains the delicacy even as it gains heft so I think this will become more flattering over time, but it is way too early, unlike other vintages I've tried (98, 99, 02, 07) and think are drinking better today

Was concerned that this might be shut down but the (very generous) person who opened it was right to do so. Still youngish, but singing. Medium bodied fruit with a silken mouthfeel and joyous nascent complexity. Will continue to develop for years to come but a delight to drink now.

This was right on the money. Beautiful translucent pinot color. The nose was typical chambolle musigny - that exotic red flower smell is what I call it but maybe that's not a great description. I know it when I smell it and you will too if you love Musigny. Very typical and beautiful. Was fresh and pleasantly stinging on the palate. Excellent.

Light color but clean and no browning at all. Nose of fresh red cherries, all clean and youthful. Everything about this wine was pleasant and nice but also enticing. I kept coming back over and over again. Well balanced, medium long finished , really well made and almost oozing great tasting fruit. Look forward to drinking again

An absolutely marvelous wine. This was profound and deep, and yet uplifting us into a poetic transcendance, it had an incredible purity while being mystically complex. Fresh and truthful while mysterious and magic. The power, the poem and whisper of Musigny was indeed found in this bottle by Freddy Mugnier. I will remember this for a long time! Cheers.

Thanks to Brad who brought this to go along with our burgundy pizza ( no tomato sauce) Decanted 4 hours prior to serving. Medium color. Great nose from the get go. Earth, red/dark fruits, and starting to develop secondary notes of sous bois. Velvet and silky on the palate. Depth and long lingering palate. So well balanced. A wine that one doesn't want to end. Superb!

For a few seconds after opening, there was a glorious scent of rose petal and light cherry, with the earthy complexity that marks great Burgundy. Delicate texture, very nuanced. The bouquet disappeared and the flavor went into a shell, but did emerge about a half hour later but on a less interesting level. So briefly a truly great wine but not for long. Frustrating.

New Year's Eve 2014 (My house): Opened and decanted about 90 minutes before serving. After the stellar performance of the 01 Amoureuses last weekend, I decided it was time to check back in on this one. Sappy dark red/ black raspberry on the nose and palate with deep, intense floral (violets). Densely packed fruit and floral on the palate with only faint hints of spice coming through. A long powerful finish. Clearly lots in reserve with a long life ahead. If served blind, I would have guessed from a much younger and riper vintage.

Andrew's and Howard's birthday dinner (Hippopotamus Restaurant, Wellington): Served blind beside the DRC. Deep ruby colour. A beautiful nose of raspberry jam, red berries, Indian spices, dark earth, a full peacock's tail of aromas. On the palate, your first impression is of the beautiful, crystalline fruit, after a relatively sweet entry. I'm immediately thinking Chambolle but this wine clearly has impressive, serious Grand Cru fruit weight and drive. It is elegant and laser-like focused, with its power and gravitas below the surface: the classic iron fist in a velvet glove. Besides the beautiful fruit sweetness there is a lovely, refined tannin structure, and excellent detail and length. The wine is fairly youthful with years ahead of it, of course. Thanks very much Mike.

2001 Burgundy Grand Cru Dinner (Park Palace, Grand Park Hotel): What a way to round up a trio of wines – a knockout Musigny coming after two brilliant bottles of Les Amoureuses. I thought that the 1er Crus were drinking better and were probably more enjoyable on the night, but there was no doubt that this was the real Grand Cru amongst its flight. The nose was deeper, earthier, spicier, with bigger, yet subtler and more deeply wound aromas of earth and undergrowth, blueberries and violets, with a little streak of chalk running through the bouquet. Really lovely. Great palate too. It was surprising ready to drink, very soft and velvety for a relatively young Mugnier Moose. It was very complete though, with ringingly clear notes of blueberries that were so transparent that the wine came across almost light-footed. Like all the best Musignies though, move beyond the deceptive shallows and you are at once plunged into a palate of real depth and effortlessly intensity. It was just so subtle and effortless that you never felt the weight and heft on it. Make no mistake though – this was a class up from the pair of Les Amoureuses. It had a lovely finish too - long, subtle and beautiful, with stone and earth and mineral on the backpalate. A great wine, starting to show nicely, but it needs time yet. It certainly had a tighter, less giving feel than the Amoureuses. I would say 5-6 years more.

Gorgeous nose with waves of cherries, orange peel, plum, spices, floral, and earth. This was medium-bodied, deep, silky, sweet and long. It opened up slowly over the course of the 4 hours dinner and I had the distinct impression that this was still years away from apogee.

Popped and aired in the glass for 30 minutes. Medium ruby color. Ethereal nose of cherry blossom, black plum, alpine florals, schist, thyme, forest floor. Complex array of red and black fruit on the palate, high-toned and sweet at first then dropping a register and putting forth iron and flint notes which never became overwhelming. Balanced and light on its feet the whole evening, with a slow unveiling of second and third hits on the tongue. Ample acidity and integrated tannins to anchor the fruit. Long finish of red raspberry fruit with a delicate press of earth and iron filings. The last sips were the best. This is just a baby, but already capable of fireworks.

This couldn't be more different than the '99 as this baby is all about softness and balance. Incredibly smooth, finely-etched cherry fruit in a much lighter-bodied wine but the elegance and complexity here make it beguiling to drink now. This is an ethereal and very pure expression of Musigny that will last but is ready to drink with a good decant. (Rarities at 11 Madison)

Opened about 90 minute before serving. Lots of power and density. Seems more forward that the past few bottles I've had, but no doubt has a lot more upside potential. Lots of red fruit cherry and berry with seductive spice and a great floral lift. Wonderful density on the palate with great textures and a long powerful finish. It was a bit of a toss up which was better tonight, this or the 01 Amoureuses in the previous flight.

Getting ready for the holidays with a Burgundy dinner (The Bristol - Chicago IL): This wine also continues to show better and better with more time in cellar, and I don't think it is nearly at its peak drinking window yet. Lots of layers of red fruit flavor and aroma with nuanced Asian five spice. Very lacy, well textured, well structured, this started soft and charming, ended with lots of power and concentration. I slightly preferred the Muginer 2001 C-M Amoureuses from the prior flight (others disagreed), but these two wines will continue to be exciting bottles to compare and contrast over the next 2 or 3 decades.

Reticent nose of cherries and minerals. Lovely flavors of crushed cherries and stoney minerals. Quite elegant but i find the finish unfocused and a bit soapy. Shocking given the reviews and perfectly stored bottles since release. Not sure what to say but maybe an off bottle although there is nothing technically wrong. Very disappointing for a wine i usually love in any vintage. 87?

Birthday Celebration (Balena - Chicago IL): Lots of red fruit aromas and flavors with intense spice and very precise fruit that could be mistaken for lean. Acidity is fairly assertive and prominent, providing lift. Long and energetic finish. In a great flight with Roumier 2000 C-M Amoureuses and Jadot 1996 Musigny. I slightly preferred the Roumier today, which is probably at/near its peak drinking window, but think the Mugnier will be even better a decade from now. Group was divided on which of the two bottles was preferred.

Another Saturday at Knightsbridge - mostly blind (Northbrook, IL): Popped and poured. Elegant and seamless wine, this really demonstrates Musigny's "velvet glove" character. Very feminine and charming fruit and spice, with real density on power on the finish. This probably has at least another decade in which it will continue to improve. Possibly two decades. (at Cru - NYC) I have only had one other Musigny from Mugnier and I must admit to being a little disappointed by this one. Still very young (not the fault of the wine) - things were very clean and precise. There was excellent length - the finish was really special. What was disappointing was the simplicity of the flavor profile. Granted, this is a young and exuberant wine and will probably develop much greater depth and complexity with time. I would love to taste this again in 10 years to see what happens. Right now, very pure, correct and long without a lot of WOW. (91++?)

The hallmarks of grand cru Burgundy are finesse (that luxuriously fine-knit texture) and scale (a breadth that seems to seep into areas of the palate that other wines don't reach). This has the finesse, but not the scale nor much complexity. It initially offers an aroma of root beer and oak, then no aroma at all, but it's not closed down. The fruit is very pure, the essence of cherry and as pure an expression of cherry flavor as you could hope to find in a wine, the tannins so fine they're almost imperceptible.

This was right on the money. Beautiful translucent pinot color. The nose was typical chambolle musigny - that exotic red flower smell is what I call it but maybe that's not a great description.
