Fading, with more to say in the nose, with its tobacco, cigar box, spearmint, smoke, cedar, spice, and smoked currant character, than on the light-weight, bright, crisp, cranberry, and tart cherry palate. This is not a wine to hold for further development as it is well past its prime. Drink from 2024-2026.

Very youthful in color- could easily be 30 years younger. Complex aromas of tobacco, tar, dried herbs, burnt ash, mint, a bit of candied red fruit. A tinge of chocolate, maybe some orange zest. Fresh. Magnificent.
Lovely flavor as well. On first opening it's a little lacking in structure but the tannins come out once it has a little air. Slightly disappointing finish though, which keeps it from a higher score.

Fun to see that we have a few of these in the cellar because it's definitely a very nice wine. From the Domaine and recorked in 2013. More secondary and maybe even a bit more tertiary here but really interesting and just classy. Fun to try next to the '09. This really crushed it but mostly just because of the extra time. I assume the '09 will end up being truly wonderful as well when it hits 58 years.

Took a few minutes of air to clean up and for the funk and dirt to blow off, at which point this was very good. Not a lot going on aromatically, but the fruit is very much alive, ripe and sweet, with lively acidity. Smooth as silk and very fresh. I’d say 97+ points on the palate, 80 points on the nose!

Capsule was damaged and a high shoulder fill. Cork intact, but fully soaked, While this bottle didn’t have the same vanilla & honey nose as the prior bottles, I was struck at how well it had held up despite the low fill. This entire case has been in remarkable condition and this bottle was true to form. Great structure, little bricking, rich, hedonistic nose. There is still some lovely fruit and it is complemented by the lead pencil and cedar on the long finish.

I cannot imagine there are too many of these bottles left in the world, so this was a real treat I will never forget.
The large format has helped this age far more slowly than a normal 750ml bottle, so this was still so dark red without too much age. There was also still great structure remaining with light tannins coating the mouth. To taste, this did have an elegance that many of today's Bordeaux struggle to find in a world of rising temperatures and new oak. Dark fruits with some secondary aromas. So fresh. There is nice sweetness on the nose, There was a slight leaness that was evident in the aftertaste that could be a result of what was a very wet, cold and heavy raining season in Bordeaux at harvest time that year. Overall, a wonderful experience!
An impeccable and melancholy wine experience. A must have with aged, sedate, and rich fig, and prune and cigar ash, and earth. The finish lingers for over a minute and I loved it. That said I come from a point of view of .... "I love old wine". I love it's unique and up-Replicateable flavor.

Rebottled 2013 from BBR. Stunning wine given its age - surprisingly fresh although it may well have been topped up. Gave it a 1 hour decant and it continued to open up all the way to midnight four hours later - what a way to bring in 2018. Fabulous experience.

Haut Brion & La Mission Haut Brion: I had high hopes for the 64 Haut Brion and although it showed well, it wasn't spectacular. The 64 La Mission gave a much stronger showing on the night and ultimately, if all the 64 HBs are like this, they are probably best served on their own. The wine has the classic Haut Brion black cherry though the fruit is now getting a tad attenuated. There is a marked toffee note and touches of loam and smoke. This was beautifully balanced on the palate (when is Haut-Brion not?) and finished well, but it's time to drink these.
This lot just keeps on delivering. Intact, but mostly saturated cork. No sign of seepage. Lightly decanted. WOTN. Deep, rich crimson. Honey, rose and vanilla nose with secondary notes of earth and toast. This attacked with fruit and honey. Delicate and floral, but not so much that it disappeared. In fact this was surprisingly rich and complex. The finish was a bit shorter than some of the other bottles. Happily, this has years left of enjoyment.

Food: none Condition: reconditioned in 2005, almost perfect fill Duration: 2 hours Notes: I haven't had very good experience with reconditioned wines or maybe I was unlucky that the ones I had were refilled with some relatively new vintages? The nose was very flat and smelled like vinegar.

Ruby color, shockingly deep and bright, with no trace of bricking. Unfortunately, the nose and palate were dominated by barnyard, leather, and unclean animal notes. This bottle showed an excellent fill, but a touch of old dried seepage under the capsule. Not scored.

Amazing. Perfect bottle, with cork still dry at the top. Looked like it was from the '80s, easily the youngest bottle of this I have ever tasted (including examples from the early 2000s). The magic combination of youthful fruit with fully evolved tertiary flavors that only the greatest of old wines possess. Plus it fully tasted like Haut Brion with all the tobacco, cedar and other secondary flavors a Haut Brion nearly always has. Spectacular.

Spectacular bottle... Fill into the neck; deep ruby color with slight lightening at rim. Took a photo of this next to the 1996 and hard to tell the difference... Great fruit and body/viscosity; tobacco and tar; tannins resolving but great mid palate and long finish... Not as much "scorched earth" and minrality as the 1996, but this was really Haut Brion through and through and a great bottle of wine...

Outstanding condition, ex-WineBid, WOTN for the HWS group, clear Haut-Brion character, very lively for age, better than any recent 1966 or 1970 Haut-Brion I have had.

The cork was in great nick. The wine drank beautifully. Complex aromatics of freshly polished leather, sweet cedar, earth, gravel, tobacco and eucalyptus. Full, plump and sweet in the mouth. Taking on some savoury tertiary notes. Refined and classy with admirable length.

No bricking, quite youthful looking. Some funk on the nose which blew off and left aromas of plum and wet clay. Balanced, elegant, a treat. Finish a bit shorter than I would prefer, but otherwise this really is quite good.

Wow! This bottle was wide open, full throttle from first cork pull. It just kept going and going, never trailing or falling off, enjoyed over 4 to 5 hours. sweet dried cherry, dried tobacco, Spanish cedar, the classic Haut-Brion smoke, dried perfumy flowers.
Unbelievable! The '64 Haut-Brion was the clear winner tonight.

Popped and poured, drank over about four hours. Sound bottle with high fill and saturated but intact cork. Medium red color with pronounced bricking. Aromas/flavors were slightly muted -- dark berries, earth, cedar, tobacco, chocolate, and subtle twang of acidity. Silky smooth, velvety tannins. A little thin on the palate and short on the finish. This particular bottle is just past its prime and fading. Certainly enjoyable but not all that interesting.

Whoa. Nose is crazy. Mocha? White pepper. Burnt caramel or is it crème brûlée? Whoa. I have only had a few old Bordeaux but this is amazing. Still some tannin even on the back-end. Whoa. A bit of stewed fruit but in a good way. Whoa. On the verge of mind-blowing. Unique (and four “Whoas”). thedrunkencyclist.com

Still there! Drank side by side with an 64 La Mission Haut Brion. Initially, I preferred the LMHB, but the HB began to kick in with a beguiling smokiness that endeared me to it. WOTN among many other Bordeaux wines poured. Drink up. Still has some life left, but better drink now. It opened up and improved with air. (30-60 minutes before serving would be ideal)
The first and maybe last first growth I will ever own. Bottle of unknown provenance, in good physical condition, low neck, solid cork damp almost up to the top. Ruby color, almost able to see the menu through it. Taste and smell...well, yeah, as described -- leather, tobacco, etc. But not that interesting to me. The bottle stayed open a couple of hours, and the flavors came in more fully, but not so fascinatingly that I understood why the wine was about $400. It's not that I demand fruit, or that I'm afraid of subtle tastes. But I do like complexity and this didn't have much of that going on.

Ruby red. Nose of sweet fruits and vanilla, which morphed towards slightly medicinal nose. That blew off after an hour and left us with fruit and some cedar. Tastings over time mirrored the evolution of the nose. All were struck with how relatively youthful this 50 year old bottle was.

Smoky, medium bodied, with more tobacco, truffle, cigard box and earth, than sweet cherries in character, this requires consumption as it lacks the depth of raw material for further aging.

Profound wine. Drank next to/with the 1959. Initially very open on the nose, tobacco, iodine, sweet cherry. In the mouth, round, long surprising grip/structure. Initially softer, gain weight and power as we drank over 3 hours. Did not get the cedar I expected, good minerality, nice fruit, a great balance between power and finess. By the end it was even with the 1959

mustve been a very well cellared bottle because the cork was intact, the fill line was great, and the wine was wonderful.
it had hardly any bricking and the wine was seemingly youthful and vibrant, it actually didnt mind air at all! the merlot was singing! the total integration of alcohol, oak, and fruit was incredible.
very nice treat for $300. just goes to show what good cellaring will do for a bottle.

Garnet and surprisingly no bricking with medium viscosity in the glass. Ripe red fruit on the nose with secondary, aged earth and vegetal notes. Medium body and still vibrant with plum and red fruit on the palate. Completely integrated with plush textures. Mild complexity. Medium persistency and finish. Could probably hold up to another 50 years of cellaring.

A trio of 64's. Haut Brion, Cheval Blanc, and Leoville Barton. All three were in good condition, and all three showed the vintage. For me, that means a touch on the fleshy side, not block buster, but after 49 years, you have to applaud a vintage that keeps on drinking well. My ranking was HB, Cheval, Barton. Out of 9, it was about about split between the Cheval and HB for favorite, with one vote for the Barton. All three showed well.

What an incredible opportunity! My brother-in-law brought over not one, but two bottles to taste. One bottle he was skeptical about how it was kept before finding a good home, and the other he was confident in how it was stored. The results? On the nose it smelled like port and in the glass it was starting to change from its deep, dark red. Unfortunately, we missed the peak drinking window as they were past their prime. Fortunately, they were still drinkable and it was a lot of fun to taste them throughout the evening to see how they changed.

I picked it up for peanuts from a kindly wine retailer, who admitted the provenance was questionable, and the barely shoulder-high fill validated that assessment. Took it for a spin and it was pretty much DOA. Oxidized and flat, with just some lingering hints of what once was on the nose and on the palate. Damn shame, but I knew it was more of a science experiment than anything else.

This bottle was was rockin’! From an original case, I’ve had 10 bottles of this wine. Most of the bottles seemed tired. But not on this night! It was dark in color with port like scents along with caramel, smoked, frilled meat, tar and tobacco aromas. Elegantly styled, this medium/full bodied wine finished with round, supple textures and spicy, smoke filled black cherry and cassis flavors. Having had this wine on numerous occasions from my cellar and from from cellars of my friends, this was the best bottle of 64 Haut Brion I will ever have. The point being, there is no reason to hold this wine. Drink 'em if you have 'em.

This lighter style of Haut Brion has started to fade. Aromatically, the wine offers tobacco, smoke, earth, forest, five spice and tar notes. This is better in the nose than on the palate. Medium bodied with a light, short finish that ends with cassis and spicy strawberry flavors. This was richer and more interesting a few years ago. Drink up.

Another excellent bottle from the lot. Nose was again perfumed with flowers and honey. Not a lot of tannins left, but still structured. First notes are sweet with honey and vanilla. Then moved to dark fruits, and earth. Was loved by everyone. Made a magnificent pairing with the Kobe beef over rice with rice-wine vinegar and with the Wagyu carpaccio.

Wow. An incredible bottle of wine. Was concerned when the cork, which was intact, came out quite easily. Cork was fully saturated and area under capsule showed evidence of a tiny bit of seepage. Barely a brown tinge to the rim. Still a lovely pigeon's blood ruby, with nice legs. Nose is rich and full of honey and vanilla with honeysuckle and some raspberry. Tannins are quite soft. Mouth feel is all velvet. First note is of currant and graphite. Then honey and blackberry and blueberry. Finish was a touch short -- about a minute, likely due to age. Didn't decant - afraid it might be too volatile. Wine did improve and evolve in the glass, but with 6 of us tasting, there wasn't a long time between start and finish!

Amber. All soy sauce and advanced notes. Some tobacco elements on the palate. Well-resolved, with enough structure to keep things from being flat but not much left for aging. Balanced and nothing out-of whack but clearly needs to be drunk. Enjoyable.

Unquestionably this bottle was the best shape I've ever had this wine in. It's also the most broad-shouldered and expansive in scale, but it doesn't quite have the flesh to fill in the whole area, so it does come across a little hollow. That said, what material it does show absolutely screams Graves and Haut-Brion with its vivid aroma and finishing backdraft of succulent mesquite smoke.

Haut-Brion Vertical (Craft): Very aromatic with an array of mineral scents like iron and rust and beef blood, and carrying some of that on to the palate, which is rougher and rockier than the last bottle of this I tasted. Very fragrant, and as smooth as melted butter in the mouth, with the suppleness and tenderness you can only get from a wine that has the constitution to last as long as this did. Maybe it's undergoing a graceful decline; it doesn't scream Graves and there's hardly any tannin left, but this is a luscious wine despite its apparent fragility.

Food: none
Condition: reconditioned in 2005, almost perfect fill
Duration: 2 hours
Notes: I haven't had very good experience with reconditioned wines or maybe I was unlucky that the ones I had were refilled with some relatively new vintages? The nose was very flat and smelled like vinegar.

But I do like complexity and this didn't have much of that going on.

mustve been a very well cellared bottle because the cork was intact, the fill line was great, and the wine was wonderful.
it had hardly any bricking and the wine was seemingly youthful and vibrant, it actually didnt mind air at all! the merlot was singing! the total integration of alcohol, oak, and fruit was incredible.
