  • Tasted blind. Wow! This is hitting on all cylinders and in a great spot right now. Grilled meats, long peppery finish. Wonderful wine!

  • PnP, brought to Rich Table (a real wow restaurant). The softer side of nicely aged Chave. Not epic but absolutely lovely and a graceful complementary dancing partner to every dish. Truffle pasta? Sure. Trout with chimichurri sauce? No prob. Crab Thai spice salad? Pirouettes. Ribeye - well, yes of course.

Fundamentally Chave. Delicate, rich, resonance. classic, well proportioned, well balanced. Gorgeous savory notes on the nose and palate but still plenty of red fruit fading in to a tart biting finish. In a very good place indeed.

  • Cracked a bottle to usher in the new year. Decanted for 4 hours ahead. The fresh pour felt reserved albeit extremely complex, and definitely gasping for air. Loads of savoury cured meat, tapenade, umami bacon fat, creamy oak, cracked pepper, violet, laden with blackberry, plum and boysenberry. In the mouth, this packed a ton of acidity and weight, and following through to a powdery fine finish. This is probably half way through its development, got a good mixture of primary and tertiaries going.

6 hours later, BAM, lights out, fresh violets and blackberry in full bloom.

All this needs is more time to develop.

  • End of year celebration: Disagreed with most of the others who guessed this as a masculine Burgundy like Cathiard, but couldn't put my finger on where this was from. In hindsight, should have realised it was a Chave as it showed remarkably similarly to the '04 I had last month. Pure, intensely driven violet and red fruit; slight polish of modern Chaves but nothing overdone. Sensual and elegant texture, sublime finish. Chave's consistency is unmatched in northern Rhone.

  • Wonderful wine. This got mistaken for a masculine vosne at our table. But the olives and bacon fat emerged after a while in the glass. Sublime wine. Chave and Jamet are two of my favorite Northern Rhone producers, and both are my top wines for the year.

  • Served blind. I guessed Cornas/Hermitage 2010, such is the peppery presence of this wine. Olives, tar, hanged meat and plenty of ripe fruit, astonishing for a 2007; many years to go.

  • Allemand v Chave Los Angeles edition: Soft supple fruit, felt a bit short on the finish, meaty pepper on the back end but wish there was a bit more acidity to prop the wine up

  • Lovely ruby color with a pink rim. Gorgeous blackberry fruit mixed with forrest floor and spice. Harmonious and pure with a bit of baby fat remaining. Medium bodied and still youthful. Grace, balance and youth. Not a blockbuster. Entirely serious and satisfying. give it 5 to 7 years to unfold. (93+)

  • Opened in Hong Kong with friends and enjoyed over dinner as the third bottle. Slow-oxed for a few hours before drinking.

Consistent with my previous notes on this bottle. Fantastic Hermitage in a great drinking window - felt very Burgundian and elegant - with dark fruits aplenty, great texture on the palate and a bit of signature Syrah spice and pepperiness that was by no means dominating. Great stuff.

  • Tart cherry dominates the nose and palate. Perhaps some hints of savory aromatics. Quite lively refeshing acidity that complements the grippy tannins. On the early side, perhaps 5 years away from hitting its stride.

  • Prototypical Chave. Olive, meats, pepper, menthol. Still fairly astringent and a tad early. Explored over 5 hours, continued to evolve and open up. Will revisit our next bottle in 3-5 years.

  • One of my fellow diners tonight felt this was very slightly corked, and while I couldn’t discern that myself, I will say this is clearly my least favorite wine of the four. Unimpressive on the nose, monotone on the palate, so discount this note as in all likelihood this is a flawed bottle.

  • Opened at the Upper House in HK. Slow-oxed for 2.5 hours before enjoying for dinner.

Beautiful Hermitage, and in a great spot at the moment. I'm very glad we let it breathe, because it really needed the air to start opening up, but it was singing in the glass by the time we really got to it.

Very dark, black fruit-driven aromatics that complimented signature Syrah peppery spice. Great structure and earthiness, yet balanced by present but not overbearing acidity that brought everything into line. Tannins there but well managed, and it definitely has the backbone and concentration to age.

Would revisit in 3+ years to see where it's at, but it will definitely keep at this level for longer than that. Potential upside if the tannins integrate even more and the fruit becomes a bit more expressive.

  • The cooking continues

Barb and I made Moroccan Lamb Stew with Apricots Always a great recipe and this was excellent
The side was Tahdig… a Persian crispy rice side with Saffron. It is a bit labor intensive but it also has as excellent

2007 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage Rouge. Alc 14%
Decanted 3+ hrs. It threw quite a bit of sediment. Cork was excellent
    Still deep purple
Intense smoke and meat on the nose
    Very expressive on the nose

Palate is tart cherry and plums with some iron
The dried salami and smoke notes are present but more muted until drunk with the food. At that point everything is “ turned up to 11”. An excellent bottle
    Precisely balanced
    Tannins are still moderate
I would say still on the young side

  • This was superb. Served with elk steaks and leg of lamb. The nose was explosive as soon as it was opened. Let it breathe for about 2 hours. Gobs of dark fruit, but it is almost airy and has a high toned aspect to it; very floral and mineral as well. Not much in the way of olive or meaty notes. Just very pure fruit and floral. The palate has very good intensity and concentration and while it is powerful, it is also quite elegant in its way. A long finish. The bottle improved throughout the whole meal. Drinking really well now, but has a lovely 10+ year plateau ahead I suspect.

  • At Nubiani NYC. This needs more time but already showing well. Big, big woody nose mellows out a bit after an hour in decanter but demonstrates the need for patience. Very herbacious still. Trademark concentration and bright fruits just entering secondary phase. Seamless finish. This is very promising for 5-10 years down the road.

  • Early maturity, but still very youthful, the 2007 rouge has a lovely purple robe, pink rim, and an incredible nose showing red and black currents, roast beef juice, floral elements, brioche, vanilla. Tart yet ripe, very lifted by minerals, endless finish. 97+ but won’t peak for another decade.

  • Deep Ruby
Pronounced aromad and flavors intensity of dark forest fruits, oak-vanilla, tar, eucalyptus, mint, excellent tertiary notes, dry, high acidity, high abv, full body, long aftertaste, dark chocolate, excellent complexity, can drink now - suitable for further aging.

  • Har drukket denne flere ganger før; men den føles dypere og bedre for hver gang.

Veldig sexy nese. Dyp og flott med tranebær, tyttebær, blåbær og lyng.

Flott konsentrasjon i munn. Stram og syrlig frukt. Ingen følelse av sødme eller pondus.

Litt mer avslappet stil enn 1998. Så bra!

  • Double decanted for 2 hrs, med. ruby with slight bricking on the rim, dark fruit with a touch of bacon, acidity was a little out of balance, being a touch too prominent, med. tannins, med/long finish; delicious now, & hopefully will come into total balance soon

  • Dark ruby red in colour. Notes of floral, blackberry, and pepper. Dry, med body, elegant tannins, nice acidity. Great wine. Drinking beautifully right now.

  • Quite closed, even with 3 hours of decanting. Very pure fruits but still hiding behind a wall of structure and acidity. Did not get much tertiary flavors like smoke or meat, it was mostly red fruit and plum. Gorgeous nose though, this really needs a lot more time in the bottle, try in another 7-10 years.

  • Nose is very shy, just hints of violets and savory olive. Dark red berries. Deep and intense palate with red fruit, savory peppery elements, very long finish. Tannic. 94 now, will be higher later. Hold at least 5 years.

  • Dinner with the wine group (Palette, SF): 3 hours air. Aromatic, dark meaty fruit; medium bodied, medium-plus acidity, nice balance, integrated tannins, a bit reticent especially in the nose; finish is medium length. Lovely, but needs more time to develop more aromatics. 93

  • Very solid young Chave. Big, dark and spicy. Hasn’t yet developed secondary notes one expects from a mature Chave, but surely will do great with time and is very tasty and already quite accessible today already. Drank at Ami Jean restaurant in Paris.

  • Syrah wines (at my home): Medium plus intense nose.
    Developed aroma.
Grilled meat, red stone. Pepper. Burned logs.
Full-bodied in the mouth with a ripe and nicely picked fruit.
Smooth texture on the fruit. Pepper, heather, smoked meat, blackberries, crackling.
Very good balance with clear crushed tannin. Long finish.
This can be at least another 15 years but available already.

  • 2007 Chave Hermitage
Medium pluss intens nese. Utviklet aroma. Grillet kjøtt, rød stein. Pepper. Brent vedkubbe noen kjøligere bakenforliggende aromaer i retning medisinskap, gassbind. 95p

  • Lukter helt nydelig. Utviklet. Mørk men elegant og nyansert frukt. Grillet og røkt kjøtt. Pepper. Svale aromaer og løft kommer med luft. Utrolig elegant i munn. Stor vin.

  • Side by side with '06 Pax Griffin's Lair. Withdrawn and slight at first even after an hour's decant, the nose eventually opens with deep red fruit, smoked meat, and a recognizable herbal note, very little of the wild feral qualities recalled from many other Northern Rhones. Compared to the Pax, this was smooth, silky, and sauve, showing much less heat (14% versus 15%+ Pax) and opened nicely over the course of dinner. Excellent today and surely for a long time yet.

  • Immediately out of the bottle super lifted mineral driven red fruit which gave way with some air to classic Syrah iron, meatiness and a slightly darker but still fresh red fruit profile. Oak was there at the beginning of the evening but after an hour or so was no longer noticeable. Can certainly feel the 2007 vintage with its fruit profile but not overpowering or “big” in any way. Opened 2 hours before drinking and decanted for maybe 20 minutes before it went back into the bottle as it didn’t need it

  • Knockout nose, depth, power and layered complexity. It has terrific structure, floral lift and a palate caressing texture. Fantastic length. In a really great place.

1 person found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (2)

  • Apparently at an awkward stage as the structure leads the fruit today making this come across disjointed. The fruit elements are quite nice yet a bit faded and clearly in the background. A relatively strong acid streak dominates the mid palate is somewhat sharp and distracting. Seems this may still become quite nice, but simple good, not great today. Good flavors here, but a rough texture hurts the overall experience for me.

  • Like others have said, it's hard to understand the lower ratings on this one. But I also admit I don't know what a 90 means to others (with how the wine press hands out 90s these days I'd think it would represent something like a reasonably decent Tuesday night malbec, which this Chave clearly is not). Anywho, this was excellent and drinking well, especially after a little air. It was perfectly balanced and had a freshness to it that went well with a concentrated, almost-sweet fruit element, plus a lot of texture on the palate. It also has that trademark Chave polish that distinguishes it from so many other syrahs. Definitely still on the young side for Hermitage though so don't expect obvious tertiary notes.

  • Dark red color. This bottle was in a great shape.Wow nose that is intensely meaty, spicy and gamey, with lots of dark fruit and graphite.Full-bodied and powerful like a heavyweight champion.Energetic palate, lots of electric acidity and savory elements, but with perhaps still some unresolved tannins.Just an excellent wine drinking very well now,but the best is yet to come.

    * Ratings between 90 and 93 .... a joke !

  • Decanted about two hours before serving and enjoyed over another 90 minutes or so. Seductive mix of red and black cherry. Charred meat, black peppercorn, and worn leather too. Black olive. Red and black cherry on the palate as well. Rich texture, but still energetic and fresh. A fairly long finish. This has been showing pretty consistent these past few years. No rush, but will probably drink through the rest of my bottles over the next couple years or so.

  • Drunk at The China Club Hong Kong - This is an excellent wine with impeccable balance. It achieves weight and structure without being disjointed or angular. Although this is relatively young in the great scheme of things you are not left feeling that it 'needs' further time in the cellar. Don't get me wrong it's almost certainly going to develop with time but it's so well made you can enjoy it now and probably for multiple decades to come.

  • Lots of fine sediment in this one. Decanting a must. 2.5 hrs decant before initial taste. Lots of vanilla, searingly tart raspberry, peppermint, clove. After another hour the berry flavors settled into a more mellow blueberry, and other smells emerged: grilled pork, dried leaves, white mushrooms, a touch of anise, tar. Gobs of fine tannins that still zap the tongue pretty fiercely. This is a very masculine wine, with lots of things going on, but still a little disjointed. It’s more impressive than it is endearing. Think of the most aggressive Constructivist sculpture and you get a sense of the experience: a challenge as opposed to an encounter with beauty. I don’t think this will mellow or integrate with time. That said, it really is impressive- wine geeks will geek out for hours with all the various shades this gives over the course of an evening. Maybe some bottle variation? I applaud the definite unapologetic style.
Score :92-95, depending on what you want out of your wine. Relative to expectations: 0, I guess....

  • 2019- Before decanting: intense pallet with graphite and tannins. Unforgiving.

After Decanting for 2 hrs- The nose is a bouquet of dark fruits and spice. Dark garnet color. The pallet is really tight with a spicy finish. Long mouth.

  • Beautiful ruby color. Masculine, dark fruit, autumn leaves and smoked meat. Burgundian weight. Still has nervous, youthful energy but starting to come together. There is a lovely ripe stem element on the finish. Will drink well for another 10 to 15 years at least. I just love the weight, poise, clarity and purity of the wine’s from Chave. (93)

    Lukter trøffel!
    Kjøtt, mørk frukt, urter.
    Fascinerende på duft.
    Begynnende modning i frukten.
Mørk og kraftfull, men ikke uten eleganse.
Bra nå, men ser for meg at det er enda mer å hente her.
    Lineær kurve med flott utgang.

  • An incredible complexity plays on the nose with a range of elements that can be found in wines form Burgundy, Bordeaux and of course Rhone. Reminds me a bit of the elegance from Domaine Jamet and roughness from Guigal. Dark berries, eucalyptus, hanged meat, juniper, black olives, almonds, cinnamon, mint, coffee, black pepper and gunpowder. The concentration is huge, as is the balance. Every wonderful elements are transferred to the palate with incredible depth and length. This wine made goosebumps.

  • Very pure cherry/dried cherry, strong acidity, fairly primary, very young; later in the evening turns more volcanic, violet, with some tangy electric minerality, very dry, fantastic flavors and liveliness. Drink now with lots of air, or hold for years.

  • Dark notes dominate the very expressive nose with flavors dark berries and spices. Medium tannins with savory notes of black berries and dark fruit. Long finish. This is still very young and needs time.

  • Chave and cassoulet: Like this a lot, though it still seems very youthful and primary right now and needs years to develop. But the potential's awesome - there's really clean, fresh black fruit here with some lighter green olive notes, and bright peppery and faintly floral accents around the fruit. It doesn't show any of the meatiness or smokiness of other vintages though, and I hope that'll develop with time. But I love the overall balance and sense of freshness here, though it just feels too young right now.

  • The King in the North! (Chicago, IL): In a lineup of brilliant wines, the 2007 comes off a little bit nondescript. It's incredibly pure and clean with intense black fruit and pepper, but the feral game notes, the brine, the smoke, are all missing. The fruit is sappy and sweet and quite intense, but a lot of the more structural elements aren't as prominent. I wish that this had a little bit more cut from acidity as well. Obviously young, I'd hold this and see where it goes.

  • It's not the most flashy or detailed Hermitage, and tends towards a more elegant, red fruit and floral profile. A young wine, but it's not a particularly big or dense Chave either, so I'm not sure there's a huge upside to be gained by holding this. Enjoyable enough.

  • Luftet i 2,5 time. Lys farge for å være Syrah. Nesen er bekmørk, men særdeles elegant. Modne bjørnebær, mørke kirsebær i kirsebærlikør. Mørk stein, grus, varm asfalt. Godt med fat. Begynnende utvikling. Elegant vin men med rå konsentrasjon. Stor punch i frukten. Relativt lettbeint med heftig syre. Lang mineralsk finish med sublim frukt. Helt nydelig vin. God nå, men bedre om 5 år.

  • Adrian visits Châteauneuf-du-Salil; 10/19/2018-10/20/2018 (Indianapolis): Served blind, and clearly shows the hallmarks of Hermitage with its core of rich black fruit, grainy tannin, and plenty of weight on the palate. A touch of smokiness on the nose and the sense of finesse to the texture had me wondering if it was Chave, though it doesn't have the opulent and perfumed fragrance that I typically expect from Chave. Time in the decanter brings out more meatiness and savouriness, and this is drinking remarkably well considering its age.

  • Visiting Châteauneuf-de-Salil (sans Pape); 10/19/2018-10/20/2018 (Indianapolis, IN): Served double blind and immediately identified as Chave Hermitage. Black fruit, dense, slightly sweet and very powerful, but with ample acidity to cut through the palate. Some polish, lots of spice, and some meaty elements. The acidity threw me way off here -- I thought this was a 2004. Perhaps a touch advanced, but I'm thinking this is an early drinking vintage anyway.

  • Dinner with Jean-Louis Chave (Heirloom Cafe, San Francisco): Amazing savory nose, with roasted mushroom and light truffle notes; fabulous dark fruit, pomegranate boysenberry, excellent depth but has a lightness and elegance, with great acidity, still youthful, barely any tertiary notes. Fabulous now as an adolescent, will be interesting to try in another decade.

  • In contrast to the experience of many others on CT, this bottle was singing from the moment uncorked, and held steady all evening. Smoke and forest floor on the nose, and ample evidence of the sweet red fruit awaiting. Well integrated palate, with smoked meat and sweet tannins complementing the rich, soft fruit, violets and a minerality that held everything in balance. No evident heat. Looking back at my note, it also fails to capture that this is a highly structured wine. Beautiful stuff.

  • Chave Hermitage & Brisket (Chez Kailin - Northbrook IL): In 04/06/07/09 vertical. This bottle was open 12 hours before serving with a double decant. I think this frankly got too much air, with the structure out front vs the fruit, which seemed almost drying. Long finish, but slightly hard. Not consistent with previous times tasted several years back. 91 points tonight, with upside from here.

  • Chave & Brisket (Ken's - Northbrook, IL): Served in a flight of 04/06/07/09. Hasn't budged in the 6 months since I had this last, and really shouldn't be touched for about 10 years. The nose here is ripe, super rich and primary. The palate is seriously delicious in a purely hedonistic sense with rich and chewy black fruit. Lots of peppery spice on the back-end. Good purity and brightness. 3-5 points of upside. Hold!

Full of seductive ripe fruits: plum, blueberry, black currant, fresh and focus and getting more complex w earth, sweet herbs and chocolate. Impressive freshness, good acidity and ripeness. Well poised, pure and clean, good complexity, lovely sweetness and mineral lingering. Inner perfume of violet and blackcurrant. This is classy and delicious.

  • The first hour or so the wine was really ripe and rich, filled with sweet dark ripe fruit. Coming back to it about 2 hours later the savory meat and black pepper start to emerge, quieting the sweet california like syrah and reminding you that this is CHAVE HERMITAGE. Gets nice and fleshy with loads of pepper and brighter fruit with nice acidity. Seems most notes reflect the initial wine being pretty sweet. I would highly recommend a decant and letting it get some air for awhile if you're going to open one now.

  • Masters of Syrah (Sixteen Restaurant, Chicago): This is decidedly more rich and ripe than the 2000 (as you'd expect given age and warmer vintage). The nose is boastful and dense with ripe, slightly candied black fruit, loads of black pepper and faint notions of toast. The savory elements (meat, olive) are there if you look for them, but right now quite subtle. The palate is full throttle and stuffed with youthful, ripe black fruit. Almost California like today. Several points of upside assuming this sheds some fat and richness with time.

  • Masters of Syrah (Chicago, IL): A somewhat disappointing showing for this wine. The nose was a bit reductive at first, though the stink blew away after a little bit. What's left is a muted nose, though you can pick out very sweet black fruit and pepper on this. The palate feels thickly textured, with lots of opulent black fruit, but after that sweetness, the tannins seem to clamp down hard. Admittedly, this is a little early to be opening this wine, and the best advice would be to leave this be for some more time.

  • Still an infant this well structured well-balanced wine offers loads of layers and complexity.
There is no overheating here - on the contrary the immediate impression is a tight Bordeaux resemblance but soon its Northern Rhone origin is taking over. However there is not yet the normal leather, bacon, fleshy notes yet.
The mouthfeel is incredible and the taste is lingering for almost a minute.
The notes are not even in their secondary phase yet and it will be exciting to follow this wine for many years.

  • Very primary nose of dark fruit, almost no bacon, blood, fur and other typical syrah notes. This is more about fruit and small dosis of lovely wood at this stage. On the palate it is (as always) very well balanced with a fresh acidity and surprisingly low tannins (due to vintage). Finish is long and fresh.

  • 15 vintages of Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage, Rouge and Blanc (E&R Wine Shop, Portland OR): Some orange hue on the meniscus. Very beautiful briar fruit on the nose, coupled with sweet herbal graphite note. I also get a campfire with meat drippings. Very pretty and elegant aromas that are sweet and sexy. Really beautiful fruit on the quite smooth and integrated palate. Lovely elegance with sweet tannins and rich, beautiful acid. I love the palate of this wine. Lovely soft fruit expresses on the finish with puckering, lean but nicely integrated fruit. Mostly, though, the finish shows its more tight structure after those first few pretty notes.

  • Quite closed, but released more Syrah flavours after a while in the glass. A lot more punch than in the Farconnet. Smooth and seemless in the mouth, with fine tannins. Very young now and needs more time.

  • This wine lacked the finesse and power of the terrific 06 Chave. Maybe an expensive mistake, as one reviewer put it. I'll give it a few years before opening another.

  • Pnp, deep red with dark fruit aroma almost like a burgundy (NSG), some spice and green pepper which the latter would suggest it is not. Sweet in mouth with similar fruit noted in the aroma, added here is faint vanilla/licorice, which more resembled the powerful ripeness of a US Pinot Noir than burgundy. More wood spice in the finishing but tannin is velvet and the wine has a very nice balance. Lovely and shall continue to see how it would evolve.

  • Wonderful but will be better and more accessible with a few more years of age. Complex and dark on the nose, blackberries and dark fruits, some spice. Earthy and rich on the palate, with a complex mouthfeel. Still quite tannic. Developed nicely in the glass.

  • Kind of a guess at this point, cause sometimes you know the second you open a bottle, oops, that was a mistake. Perhaps an expensive mistake, but you can chalk it up to, no, you can't, it's just a mistake.

Dark red/purple, nose somber tending to closed, only marginal hints of black fruits assaulted by a rather brooding, monolithic granite and granite sensation. Very tight in the mouth, and if anything, gets tighter with an hour or two of air, so what we have here is a failure to communicate. There's tension and balance, but it's younnng.

That's fine, it's just doing it's thing. Do watcha wanna do, I'll see you in another 3-5 years. Rating is an approximation of what I expect to see on the other side.

  • 8 Vintages of Chave tasted at VVW (2004-2011)
Groups #3 and my #3 wine of the tasting.
Meaty, earthy, tarry nose with some spice and floral elements. Dense, supple, powerful palate, maybe shows a little monolithic at this stage. Very long and drying finish.

  • Really nice! At once rich, deep and dark and yet fresh with great acidity- great tension in the balance.

  • Of course this is still young. But for Chave Hermitage, it's one of the few vintages that will offer pleasure early, that is early for Chave. With a good depth of color, the polished textures and mineral driven, spicy cherry griotte filled wine looks, smells and feels great in all the right places. Another 5 years will add a lot of texture and complexity to the wine.

  • Glengarry Wines - "Superstars of the Rhone Valley" tasting; 5/31/2014-6/1/2014 (Glengarry Wines and Spirits, Victoria Park, Auckland, New Zealand): Age is apparent on this wine - dense ruby with some tawny hints. Old school wine with beautiful balance and great fruit. Very structured style that is likely always to be on the tannic side but has a wonderful savory nature. This is a wine with a strong personality that is complete and a great example of the vintage.

  • May have been the victim of my expectations. Three-hour decant. Soft and inviting, beautiful fruit and a sexy feel in the mouth. Lovely stuff, but really was expecting more complexity, perhaps more heft, expecially at this price. I do not drink Chave on a regular basis, so perhaps (likely) I just don't know the wine well enough.

  • Colore impenetrabile, naso chiuso all'inizio poi si distende su note di frutta rossa croccante, cenni frutti blu, fiori rossi, spezie dolci, bocca imponente, fresca, succosa, bel tannino fine, alcol preciso presente, bel finale pulito, piaciuto

  • Opened and decanted about 2 hours before serving. Another great showing for this wine, though an extended decant would have certainly helped some more. Powerful, ripe black and red berry fruit on the nose with an intoxicating mix of meaty black spice, forest floor and toasty oak. Some pretty darker floral notes in the background. The palate seemed to be more dominated by black fruit rather than red and there was quite a bit of black spice all throughout. Full bodied with a lot of structure. A long, powerful, spicy finish. Glad to have some stashed in the cellar.

  • HDH auction tasting at Tru (Chicago, IL): Inky purple. A surprisingly muted nose, with some cough syrup aromas. Reminds one almost of the spirit part of a vintage port, but beneath it all there is a faint hint of tart red cherries. On the palate, you can tell this is quite ripe, but there is a staggering amount of acidity to balance things out. Certainly a bit heavy for my palate, but this is surprisingly gentle. The dissipating tannins are also a bit of a surprise -- I'd have expected this to be much chewier. In any case, an un-Parkerized northern Rhone in a very Parkerized vintage.

  • Judgment of Singapore: Part 1 - Chardonnay and Syrah (Zeffir, Dunlop Street): I liked this very much, but it was really far too young to really appreciate fully. Indeed, given its youth and the fruit-forward character of the vintage, more than half the table guessed it as a new world. It was voted #3 out of 6 Syrahs. I thought it had a very nice nose, full of ripe black cherries, sweet blueberries, wafts of violets that almost suggested Cote Rotie, and just that tiniest hint of savoury earth and meatiness. A gorgeous bouquet, just perhaps slightly distracted by a touch of glycerol that wiggled its way in there. The palate was still youthful. Certainly less developed than the nose, it was rather primary, with sprightly acidity and super-fine tannins running through clear, clean flavours of black cherries, berries and a touch of meat. There was great depth and a lovely purity to the fruit in spite of all that rich, primary character though. All very nice, and nicely balanced, at least until the finish, where the alcohol and some acidity stuck out a tad obviously. With time though, and especially when paired with nice bit of beef, it melded together better, showing more pure fruit notes alongside some mineral and a kiss of garrigue strectching into a long finish. Actually, with the acidity and structure to it, this really was a lovely pairing for the meat on the table. This needs some time to come together yet, but it was a very attractive wine, full of luscious fruit. Popped and poured, it just grew and grew in the glass over time as well. This should improve dramatically over the next decade in the bottle and continue developing for a long time after that. A rather atypical Chave given the vintage, but it is an impressive wine.

  • An evening with Chave, SQN, Captain Kirk and others (The Greenhouse Tavern): Not sure if this was a proper bottle or not. It was an outstanding wine, but the weak sister in this line-up. It is tight and young, so perhaps. The nose has black raspberries and some funk. It also had this obvious buttered popcorn note. I am assuming this mean the fruit is taking a back seat to the oak at the moment. It is the lightest in body. The hardest in tannins. Black raspberry fruit. There may be some lurking complexity but its not showing itself tonight. This bottle was pop and pour, so perhaps air would have helped.

  • J.L. Chave tasting with Gerard & Jean-Louis Chave and Louis & Xavier Kat (Okhuysen) (De Zwethheul (**) Schipluiden, Holland): Although this wine is already five years it old this one is ´just from the cradle´. Beautiful nose, a little closed but a very thick and ´easy drinking´wine. Lots of tannins but that goes without saying. Give it some 5-10 years.

  • Chave Tasting with Erin Cannon Chave (Vin Vino Wine, Palo Alto, California): Very dark red violet color; appealing, tart berry, herbs, mineral, charcoal nose; tight, tasty, tart berry, tart black fruit, violet palate, luscious but restrained; needs 4 years; long finish 93+ points

  • Really showed great, this bottle was decanted for 3-4 hours. Tasted blind, it was clearly Northern Rhone, although I guessed Cote-Rotie because of the upfront pepper and more floral aromatics. More black than red fruit, this wine had lots of spice on the finish. Very long finish. Incredible balance. This showed better than when I tasted it at the Domaine in September 2010.

  • Jemrose Dinner @ Marche Moderne in the OC (Marche Moderne, Costa Mesa CA): What an excellent wine this was. I even doodled "WOTY?" in my notes. The unfortunate part is that unless I go beat the path to source one soon, it's not likely I can taste it again before year's end. The fruit shows a dark purity, a delicate/crushed sense. As it aired, becomes a bit more sauvage but retains that tremendous fruit expression and balance. I have pure underlined, too. Just so many things going on in this wine, I wish I could have drank another glass of it today and really sat and appreciated it again. IMO, this wine is certainly worth the reputation that is attached to it. Tremendous.

  • From magnum bottle with another 3 magnums from 1996 Hermitage L'Oree Blanc, 2007 Da Capo and 2007 CdP Saint Cosme.

My 1st time with Hermitage from J.L.Chave Wowwww....very fragrant. Hints of 100% new oak that's so beautiful. Ch. Latour appears in my imagination. Very tempting light toasted smell.

Beautiful structure, very well-balanced, moderate tannin, lovely big but silky in texture, I ask to myself, is it 2007 ?

Seamless and smooth, round but contains plenty of power. Bravo !!!

Aftertaste is tremendous !!! Very difficult to say how I feel... very very nice layers in its finish. Graet wine indeed !!!

I prefer 2007 Chave than 2007 Da Capo.

    Drink now - 2028

  • Domaine J.-L. Chave Cellar Visit, Tasting and Lunch (Hermitage): Tasted at winery. Big fruit on nose, slightly more red than black to start. Palate was a wonderful balance of red and black fruit, almost approaching being jammy but retaining its more classical subtlety. Very impressive Asian five spice blend coming through in middle and end, with wonderful minerality and energy on the finish. This might not be Chave Hermitage to cellar for 20-30 years, but should be an excellent one to drink young.
