From Jeroboam. Lovely pencil lead maturity on the nose. Some cherry remaining but fairly thin fruit overall - earthy and pencil lead and wood tertiary notes. Farm yard notes. Definitely tertiary driven. Julian loved it. Myself less convinced.

This is ready. Nice floral aromatics with touch of orange, sous bois and earth a bit more in the background. Medium bodied, user-friendly fruit. I would have preferred just a bit more acid and complexity. Will still hold a while, would be better with tertiary development, but not sure it has the bones for much of that. I liked this even better on release for its exuberant generosity.

Davy's Strange Magnum Attractor (Hawksmoor Guildhall): Served from magnum. Delightful to taste this again after having ploughed through a case when it was young. The mute 08 phase now seems to be truly over - what a pleasure, yes there's a hint of cherry sourness. Like a bodybuilder wearing a loose italian suit, the structure and presence is belied by its ethereal, almost whimsical surface. A fellow diner reported an annoying sweetness on the finish - I did not perceive that but I can understand that point...

The wine presents impressive credentials initially. Lots of really rich aromas right away - gorgeously attractive berries, vanilla, moist pipe tobacco, some heady tropical notes, even. So fragrant. But then I found it slightly unbalanced, skewing towards excessive sweetness. Almost trivialising what is, on the face of it, a serious wine. A learned colleague was so sceptical that he thought the wine had been chaptalised, which I would find objectionable if true. Clos des Lambrays is a serious plot and the wine should tell its story honestly. I am not sure that's true in the 2008 vintage, but I hope to be wrong.
Quick Notes Series Although this Lambrays has the red fruits and a seductive nose, I feel that the palate does not live up to the nose and again I couldn't see much potential nor character in this particular wine from this vintage. Maybe some minor improvements can happen in a couple of years but I am doubtful if it will change my opinion. Drink: now+ Rating: 89

This is probably the best Lambrays I have tasted so far. It have everything that I like. Pronounced nose intensity with notes of truffle, mushroom, toast, spices, ripe red fruits, ripe strawberry. Medium+ acidity and medium tannin. Tannin is fine. Long finish and pronounced flavour intensity. Currently at its best performance.

Enjoyed this. Mushroomy, rose water, tangy cherry and some cedar. It has the earthy quality, within a medium wright and gentle but persistent red fruit.

PNP Jirong. Was drinking young versus the other mostly 2006 GC’s. There was a stemmy herbaceous note that was slightly distracting but otherwise was nice .

Good colour; well modulated bouquet, not scaling the heights; similarly so on palate, understated, shapely, stylish but lacks that spark. A modest Grand cru.

My bottle was good, not great. The mushrooms and forest floor that others describe hadn't really developed in this bottle, which has been in my cellar since roughly 2011 or 2012. Gave it a 5 hour slow-ox but no decant before drinking.

Same btl as rocknroller. Served on the occasion of Kevin's (rocknroller) 60th celebrated at Minikahda Club with 12 of us enjoying Vincent's outstanding food & Nico's depth hand with the wines we brought along. 110pt occasion! This shared a terrific 3 btl flt that also included my '10 Tortochot Chambertin & Lonny's '10 Rousseau Clos de la Roche. This reminds me quite a bit the great 2001 Clos Lambrays. Which is long gone from my cellar so this a real treat! This was the most fully reallized of our 3 btl flight showing lovely forest floor, mushroom, earth and red fruit in harmony with weightless elegance. I rated my Chambertin one pt higher as it slightly trumped this btl in the elegance / balance quotient. On the other hand this showed more tertiary intrigue. 94+

It's the Big LX Birthday Bash: No Holds Barred (Minikahda Club, Mpls): Medium red color. PNP, drank a glass over an hour plus. Great nose of red cherry, truffle, moss, pencil, smoke, tobacco leaf and rose hips. The palate is medium plus bodied, red cherries abound, dried spices, mulled cherry, fine tobacco, sleek tannins and mineral notes on a long finish. This was in fine drinking form.

Oh yeah. Classic burg nose, bursting with ripe cherries, raspberries, sandalwood, mushroomy earthy tones, nutmeg spice, pine needles, dark chocolate. The oak spice is there but it has melted into the frame of the wine nicely. Expansive, layered palate with assorted flavours that change as you come back to the glass. Feels very classical and regal in style. Not a hair out of place. In a good spot. Really enjoyable.

(Burgundy 2008 half-blind tasting) Very pure and elegant nose. Impeccable balance between stems, spice and petit fruit rouges. Medium-fullish, very balanced palate. Very good concentration. Gun-powder minerality, stems, nuts and red and black cherry. Oak fully integrated. Long finish and good grip. This was actually more stemmy than Dujacs Clos de la Roche, and a pleasant surprise. Groups number 6, my number 5.

This bottle was an absolute hit tonight. Decanted for 1 hr. On the nose: plum, a touch of charcoal, raspberry with a touch of leather and vanilla, lovely black pepper spice, and clear Lambrays earth and soft stemmy notes. On the palate, amazing acidity, yellow plum and Rainier cherry, loads of spice, soft pepper, fantastic density...mouthfilling, and soft, slightly rustically styled tannin on the very juicy finish. Just stunning.

medium/lt red in colour, no perceived nose, good acidity, light tannins with minimal dark fruit/sour cherry taste, not a quality GC wine!!!!! V disappointed. Really no pleasure in this bottle. Second day...NO improvement. This bottle is not flawed . 2008 was not a great year and this was not well made with what they had to work with!

Blind "Grand Cru" with Lobster & Flannery Steak (House of Nanda - Chicago IL): Tasted double blind. Bright red fruit, seemed considerably older than 2009 and not quite Grand Cru density. Good+ nose shows much more complexity than the palate. 89 points tonight, but nowhere near the level of previous bottles, including one from just two years ago.

Double blind. Elegant and pleasant to drink with nice bright red cherry and strawberry. Some earth and floral notes add interest. But fairly lightweight and currently simple. Perhaps time will add some richness and complexity.

"Grand cru" blinds (Chicago, IL): Served double blind. I thought this was a much lower-level wine than it was; there didn't seem to be the right intensity here. This is tuned down quite a bit and while the red fruit is pretty, there's also a slight rotty element on the palate. A touch dilute, and a little prickly tanninwise.

On the first night it was a bit green and stemmy as others have noted and unimpressive. 88 On day 2 and 3, it improved noticeably with less greeness and in general opened up a bit more, offering ruby red dried cherries, spice and minerals. I'd wait 5 years or more for my next bottle. 90

I adore the light-footed, elegant style of Domaine des Lambrays, a huge contrast to their neighbouring vineyard, Clos de Tart, which are oaky and masculine. Tasted blind - Feminine bouquet of Pinot Noir red fruits, young and flashy cherry, lifted stems. Chambolle Musigny-esque nose, lightfooted yet it offers lovely perfume and flamboyant red cherries. Hints of green stems, musky soil (Chambolle Musigny?), and hints of ethereal bouquet. I thought it was my Volnay from the Chambolle Musigny characteristics (over-estimating Henri Boillot’s red perhaps?). (91/100)

Stunning nose of ripe cherry, a surprising amount of sous bois, vanilla and smoke, beautifully integrated. On the tongue, the clearest expression of blueberry I can recall in a wine, along with a touch of fennel and again black cherry. I really can’t tell you if this is fully mature: it still had a trace of nerves in it, but also a lot more tertiary than I would have expected. Highly unusual though unmistakably burgundy. Unexpectedly but at this moment undeniably superior to the 2009 (!) Go ahead and have it. A half hour of air prior to tasting. Score: 94. Relative to expectations: ++

Some pinot and chardonnay at Table, Donkey and Stick (Chicago, IL): #13230. The nose on this is probably one of the most stunning that I've experienced in a long while. Kaleidoscopic in its complexity with red fruit and flowers all over the place. It's delicate, sweet, and incredibly pretty. However, the palate doesn't live up to the very high expectation that the nose generates -- it's a little austere, and though there are some tart red fruit elements, to me there's not quite enough flesh for that huge acid-driven structure. I'm not sure if time will solve this problem either.

94-95 facile.

No formal note. Restaurant purchase. Decanted and tasted over 2hours. Wine remained closed throughout our meal. Typical higher acidity of 08. The wine wasnt without charm but i wouldnt revisit this before 2025. It will age effortlessly however it has yet to be seen if the major improvements it needs are forthcoming. I wasnt convinced from this bottle.

2008 DOMAINE les LAMBRAYS CLOS du LAMBRAYS GRAND CRU- with some fabulous Burgs ahead of this, I was about to say it can’t get any better than this and it just did from one of my fav producers of yesteryear; spicy red raspberry gives way later on to black cherry in a nice transitional way; it was soft and easy on the palate and had a noticeable and easily tolerable tannic /steminess that I actually loved; the wine expended on the palate within a few minutes and held on for a long finish

Note from Day 1 Shared with 5 other tasters. Opened and checked 1h30 before pouring the first glass. Brown hue, noticeable aged appearance in the glass. Kept changing every two minute, a whole wheel of aromas came out from the glass. Nuts, walnuts, herbal spice, cocoa powder, mushrooms in a pan, and then leather... In the palate, very elegant, the utmost elegance in the attack, velvety structure with fine integrated medium tannins, high acidity, a real ballet dancer. Leather, crushed acidic red fruit, chocolate, earthier in the finish which is also not monolithic and surprising. Great experience for everyone.

Clear medium garnet with some bricking at the edges. Quite aromatic with red cherry, green stems/wood, spice, wet earth, tea leaves, red cranberry, licorice. With time the organic aromas seem to vanish leaving just the green quality and red fruits. Medium body with cranberries and red currant as well as some bitterness and minerality. Medium acidity with medium tannins and medium+ finish. Some cherry liqueur also present. I was hoping for some more evolution on this bottle. Maybe I just got the timing wrong. Not the greatest value proposition either, but perhaps it will develop with time

La Paulée de New York: Vertical Tasting (Rainbow Room - New York NY): Tasting, brief note. So different vs the 2009 or 2010 but charming in its own, leaner manner.

Je me disais fin 90 début 2000 ? This is a very "cool" wine - like it came from a cooler vintage. At first the wine shows white pepper like crazy. One taster thought this must be Mazis-Chambertin as the white pepper was so distinct. The fruit is red and crunchy. Light to medium bodied wine. Definitely shows as young still, but pretty open on this night. Good strong acids. With more time in the glass, turns a bit green leafy. Interesting wine that was enjoyed by everyone.

Similar to the observations of some of the earlier reviewers this wine needs an hour or so to improve from a rather rustic, leafy, stemmy nose to a really impressive, floral, red fruited and spice infused one. On the palate really well balanced, gentle and round tannins, fresh, very pure red fruit, lingering finish. Good future.

Rotating Dinner Series-Wines Jimmy Likes (Acadia, Chicago IL): Nose: The nose is very pretty and perfumed with red florals, fresh picked roses, herbs, red cherries, spices, strawberries, and some earth tones. The tones favor the higher register with a femininity to them.
Taste: Medium bodied with medium/high acidity and chewy tannins. The structure is very imposing, but there is very good balance with red florals, fresh picked roses, herbs, red cherries, strawberries, and earth tones. There is a deftness to the tones with an understated quality as well.
Overall: This was wound a bit tight, but it was also a very interesting contrast to the 10 and 02. This showed a more restrained and shy side to it, but with some real underlying beauty.

Clos de Lambrays Vertical 1989-2015; 1/1/2017-9/22/2019: Dinner with Asia's leading Burgundy importer. Medium-dark ruby. Expressive nose of dark fruit, cloves with a noticeable toast/oak side to it. The exact opposite of the discrete Esmonin. Very modern. Initially very modern/fruity but a bit simple palate, forward and flattering (90-91). After 1h, there was a big increase in aromatic complexity and balance warranting a higher note. Clos de Lambrays is in my view a Burg that most people immediately like but not one I would seek out for its aromatic distinctiveness/uniqueness.

I must be missing something other people aren't tasting in this wine. This is CLASSIC 2008 Morey St Denis and I think it's incredible. There is stem and to me the spice adds to much to the crunchy red fruit. Copious amounts of acid run through the back palate as the wine is just elegant. 2nd bottle, same impression.

A fantastic wine to sit down with over a few hours and follow. Initially it's a bit stemmy and the fruit's rather restrained, but with time and air it really opens out as layers of red berried fruit and plums emerge along with a savoury earthiness, with the greener/stemmy flavours integrating nicely into the background. The finesse and sense of elegance here are quite remarkable, and I'm very glad to have a couple more bottles to visit several years from now.

Lots of green flavours on the nose. Not so much in the taste. For me it is too green. I don't know if it will integrate and fade with time. Decanting it did seem to help a bit. It was my first Clos des Lambrays so a bit uncertain whether this is a typical example. Otherwise it seems well build.

Drank over 3 hours. Strong nose of black fruit, black pepper and green pepper corn. More pepper and black fruit on the palate with a noticeable stemmy quality. This did fade over time, but not completely as more red fruit emerged. Medium finish with noticeable tannin. Clearly young and needs time, but the green notes were surprising.

Marquis Grand Cru Burgundy Lunch (Boneta Restaurant - Vancouver, BC): Very interesting nose at first on this which brought about a discussion on whether this was flawed or not, but consensus was that it wasn't. Tons of green aromas upfront, along with some blackberries, dark cherries, a hint of blueberries and a touch of tar. The green characteristic follows this through to the palate, along with some oak, black cherries, blackberries, spice, and some sage herbs to round this out. Lots of acidity complimented by a strong showing of gripping tannins. Long length finish ending on notes of black cherries and herbs. While this showed much better on the palate than the nose, the green character was distracting and was strongly overshadowed by the '06 tasted along side. Good+

Three Dinners: Burgundy was a bit out of place here, but this showed really, really well. The nose was quite expressive for a wine of this age, with red fruit, brown sugar, spice and orange/grand marnier. The taste was good, but fairly straightforward. There's plenty of fruit and some oak, but not much more. I'd guess time will help immensely.

Open for several hours before I got to it. Dominated by stems all the way around. Aromatically there's lots of spice and green notes, with hints of pretty red fruit only occasionally poking out. The palate is pretty shutdown and dominated by taut acid, but unlike other shutdown burgs I've had I don't get the sense that there's a great depth of material hiding behind the structure. The mid-palate is hollow and the finish is short and clipped. Massively disappointing.

Opened up awkwardly with (seemingly) volatile components or heat, overt stems and all around oddness and lack of elegance. With several hours, though, this became a wonder of beautiful red fruits, sweet earth, cinnamon, rose petals, just beautiful. Intensely sappy red fruit, tons of perfume, great density, great tannin quality. A winner and a Lambrays for the future...

On the nose, get bright strawberry and a touch of herbaceousness that adds to the complexity (i have heard reports of 2008s having this but i didnt find it offputting at all). The herbaceousness is not green as the wine is obviously ripe with great fruit. Long, mouthcoating finish with noticeable acidity that keeps it very fresh and gives it great cut and definition.
Day 2 - No traces of oxidation. The slight herbaceousness is gone, leaving ripe aromas of strawberries and obvious stemminess. still very primary, but with lots of depth and obvious complexity in reserve. Very impressive performance.
Very enjoyable now, not closed down at all - but I think much better things are to come down the line. My score is probably conservative on that front. I put this a bit behind the 2005 at a similar stage.

Clos des Lambrays Vertical (Momofuku Ma Peche): Hmm, this didn't show all that well today though I'm not sure why as it hasn't been all that long since I had one that was utterly captivating. But this one was tight with an acidic top note and generally just difficult to get a read on it.

Second bottle of the night of this spectacular young Burgundy. I can't find any faults with this wine and find it utterly captivating. So perfumed on the nose. It is drinking so well now. Hard to lay some down and cellar instead of drinking them now. A dazzling young Lambrays.

This is a fantastic young Burgundy. So much perfume on the nose..wow, I couldn't stop smelling it. On the palate this wine is all elegance with a long and complex finish. Cinnamon, mushrooms, red fruits and roses. Over the course of several hours this wine evolved and improved. I can't find any faults and was really, really impressed. Definitely one for the cellar.

this wine opened up and changed considerably over a few hour period...at times this was more akin to a rayas than a burg (a good thing). the stemmy nose really showed after a few hours. to me, a more masculine burg, but a mighty fine one. look forward to having more over the years

A ravishingly beautiful wine, a no-doubter grand cru from the first sip to the last. Silky, lacey, weightless. Pretty much every clichéd description of the apex of Burgundian elegance is true of this. It isn't the richest Lambrays in terms of its fruit concentration but that probably contributes to its streamlined, ballet-dancer figure. And even though the fruit isn't rich in density it's deep in tone. Lambrays sometimes reminds me of a Chambolle but this is plummier and more maroon, definitely in a different key than a pure red-fruited wine.

La Paulée de New York Grand Tasting (Metropolitan Pavilion - New York NY): Tasting, brief note. Ripe red fruit with floral hints on nose. red and black berry flavors that are slightly sweet and showing middle weight. I have been fortunate to try this several times since release (including yesterday) and think 2008 is an excellent young Lambrays in a very elegant, subtle style.

This is miles apart from its immediate neighbour Clos de Tart of the same vintage. Quite transparent with a nose of sweet red berries, but also green notes of under ripe stems. much of the same in the medium weight flavours. The overall impression is not that of Grand Cru I am afraid.

A step up in density and character over the Lambrays MSD 1er cru. This is still acid-laden but the fruit has nice ripeness, the balance not perfect but not horrible.

Degustato presso Clos Lambrays.

Very open aromatically with notes of fresh ginger, blueberries, cherry and earth. It is a mid-weight Lambrays which in turn is a mid-weight Grand Cru but is utterly delicious, packed with highly perfumed fruits. There’s a sweet heart and nice minerally crunch to the finish.

Trip to Burgundy; 6/7/2009-6/10/2009 (The Cote d'Or): From barrel. Absolutely bursting with potential I think. Lightish pink in colour. A little reductive at first, some swirling revealed a very pretty nose of winter melon, deep red fruits, perfumy musk and dried earth. The palate was where the wine really shone. Clean, defined and focused. Lots of elegance, yet plenty of power. It was deeply fruited with loads of hidden complexity and touches of spice, especially towards the long finish, yet beautifully packaged. Does not have the structure to be very long-lived , but this should make a beautiful wine a few years after release. 93-95

Although this Lambrays has the red fruits and a seductive nose, I feel that the palate does not live up to the nose and again I couldn't see much potential nor character in this particular wine from this vintage. Maybe some minor improvements can happen in a couple of years but I am doubtful if it will change my opinion.

Red cherry everywhere, nicely mature. Lighter style vs the younger vintages, but with harmony. Seems just about to enter its peak drinking window.

Color: pale red
Nose: complex, distinct, is it the stem influence? Red berries but with a funky twist, I think Blair Curtis's note on 4/22 is spot on - white pepper, grows on me, lots layers
Palate: medium bodied, fresh & still young, really good, very pure

Consumed over 2 days. Day 1 - Dark ruby.
