Good cork and good nose. Red fruits dominated, medium bodied, with hints of vanilla, long finish. Drinking very well after 3 hours, sweet and juicy. Not bad.

Pnp, very sweet for the first sip. Still a little bit tannic for first half hour and then settle down to a smooth and matured wine. Drinking very well after 2 hrs of decanting, sweet red fruits, vanilla, medium to full bodied with good finish. Very enjoyable in AGD

Six years after the last bottle, this has developed pretty well as I thought it would - very elegant and silky, perhaps lacking a little oomph and concentration. Very enjoyable but I wouldn't wait too much longer as it won't improve anyway.

Wonderful mature bdx. Nice mix of tobacco and eucalyptus notes with black fruits. Rather lush soft entry on the palate. Shows a little cedar spice on the finish. Really enjoyable mature bdx. In a good spot

Coravined glasses across couple weeks. Color is fairly dark. Nose has dark earthy and autumnal aromas. Structure is pleasantly firm with succulent tannins and nice acidity. Taste follows the nose with additional lead pencil and charred aromas with faint echoes of cassis on the back. Not super complex but nicely developed and very enjoyable. No reason to wait longer to drink but no hurry either.

No formal note and no decant, which I don't believe was needed. This wine is youthful and has many years ahead of it so no rush. Mid-heavy weight with a mix of plowed earth, dark red berry and river stone. Excellent now.

Delicious with a lamb chop and broccolini. Mature elegant Bordeaux nose, bright palate, mature tannins on the elegant finish that got longer and richer with air. Glad I have more.

You're bound get some bottle variation after 22 years, but unlike the bottle I tried last winter, this one was absolutely bone dry, without a lot going on. No overt flaw, but definitely nothing I'd pour for anyone else.

13% alcohol. CS, M, PV in unspecified proportions. Good cork, not that long but with hardly any wine penetration. Decanted 45 mn ahead. Deep colour with limited thinning and no browning at the rim. Intense harmonious nose with blackcurrant and tobacco married with ink, a bit of smoke and a suggestion of tar (in a nice way); pretty complex stuff, evolving with time in the glass, so the above descriptors are not concomitant. No direct influence of oak. Incredibly youthful in the mouth with a winning juicy quality and good mouthfeel; menthol in the finish contributing to a fresh sensation. The tannins are resolved but there is still enough grip. When a Cru Bourgeois is as good as this, you begin questioning the wisdom of buying higher ranking wines. In perfect condition now and nowhere near decline. A superlative Médoc, hugely enjoyable with rack of lamb.

In a beautiful spot. Love that it's 13%. Full-bodied. Massive tannins still. Beautiful nose of cigar box, pencil lead, etc. Fruit still lovely. Acidity perfect. Finish is overpowered by the tannins, but it's nice - medium length.

I was really impressed with this wine last night. Very pretty nose of graphite and black fruit. Over the course of the night, it developed earthy notes. The tannins had softened but still present enough to pair with a steak at Ruth’s Chris.

The 2000 Chasse Spleen is ready immediately upon uncorking, offering a classic nose of blackcurrant, pencil, leather, unsmoked tobacco and warm earth. It’s vigorous at age 22 and probably at the peak of its powers. I’m not sure how it would evolve in the decanter because we drank it so quickly.

Cork shredded, but the wine was perfectly intact. Clear garnet, very little bricking. Nose of freshly tilled soil and currant. Balanced palate leans red, nice minerality. Some coarse tannins still present on the medium-long, spicy finish. Old school Médoc in the best possible way. I can't imagine this is going to get much better, but I think it has years left in it. Drink any time, but no rush.

13% alcohol. Very good dense cork with no wine penetration whatsoever. Decanted 40mn ahead. The colour is dark with some thinning and the onset of bricking at the edge of the rim. Plenty of ripe dark fresh berries on the nose, really impressive; some ripe bell pepper developing with time in the glass, in a welcome way. The mouth is just as good, with some of the silky quality the best reds; menthol in the finish. The tannins are resolved but there is still good grip. Both substantial and elegant in that unequalled Médoc way. Now at peak, I believe. My best Chasse-Spleen ever, and an outstanding Médoc.

(8/2/21) The last of three 750ml bottles bought on the secondary market. Like the first two bottles, this had a fill that was well into the neck, and like the others, the cork was a dry, crumbly mess—but the wine was intact. In fact, this bottle was the best of the lot.
This was a fully mature bottle of vigorous, nicely concentrated wine showing an ample supply of unresolved tannins on the palate and general undergrowth, truffles, chocolate-covered black cherries, and a little menthol on the nose and palate. 13% abv. (***+/16/92)

Ahhhh…..2000….the vintage that keeps on giving ! As expected when first tasted 4 years ago, this has aged beautifully, and improved with bottle age. Considering it’s lesser (Moulis) status, it really shows the greatness of this vintage in Bordeaux.

This slept quietly in the cellar and was nearly forgotten. Based on recent notes, though, i was tempted to try. Indeed, this has traveled well through time and displays polished Moulis notes of cherry, liquorice and cloves. It still has a lot of tannins, that are not entirely melted. This gives it some interesting character, not reducing it simply to the "old wine" theme". It is not the easiest to approach, its acidity makes a brilliant food wine, but overplays at first the remaining fruit and leathery notes.
It all came better together after 1h of decant, hinting at quite some potential still. It has a wonderfully balanced finish after the decant, soft and supported thyme notes and vanilla. The two bottles consumed by the dinner party were consistent, but at the end of the evening, both bottles closed up again. I would guess that this will provide some good pleasure over at least the next 3-5 years and would suggest to go for it if you have a good opportunity.

(4/26/21) Second of three 750ml bottles purchased together on the secondary market. Like the last bottle, this had a very crumbly cork, but the wine was very youthful looking.
This bottle was fully mature and opened on PnP with a very nice nose of sous bois, tobacco leaf, and black cherry. There was a full load of tobacco on the palate backed up by black cherry, so for some, this bottle might have been described as a little past fully mature, but the acidity was fresh and the wine had good concentration and balance. With time in the glass, the black cherry asserted itself more and hints of baking spices began to emerge on the nose and on the palate.
There were more tannins here (it was a little drying on the finish) than were apt to have been resolve before the fruit was completely lost beneath the tertiary notes, so this was a very good time to have opened this bottle. A really outstanding example of this cru bourgeois at twenty-plus years of age. 13% abv. (***/15.5/91)

(4/3/21) From a 750ml bottle purchased on the secondary market from a local merchant. Crumbly cork. Decanted through cheese cloth. On PnP, this had a beautiful bouquet of aged plum, sous bois, and tobacco leaf and the same on the palate. There was a hint of over ripeness in it at first (could be some heat damage because no one else is reporting this), but this seemed to recede with time in the glass and decanter, and then a little menthol appeared to go with the aged plums. There were still some tannins to be resolved (a positive for me). Overall, this was a tasty, fully mature bottle that didn’t break the bank. 13% abv. (***/91/15.5)

Dark garnet. Somewhat muted nose with faint notes of cedar, dark plum; elegant and silky texture, red fruits, cedar, sateen tannins, juicy. Professionally cellared since release, this is one of those wines that is right in the slot, no fireworks but is very balanced and satisfying on the palate. Drink by itself, or will match with a great variety at the dining table.

A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (65%), Merlot (30%) and Petit Verdot (5%). Aged for approximately 12 months in oak barriques (40% new). 13% alcohol.
Very dark, quite extracted and almost fully opaque black ruby color. Intense and quite classically styled nose with concentrated aromas of licorice, herbaceous notes of chipotle and roasted bell pepper, some blackurrant tones, light herbal notes of minty greenness, a little bit of spicy vanilla pod, savory hints of toasted spices and old leather and a touch of fresh red plum. The wine feels ripe, full-bodied and quite concentrated on the palate with intense and subtly sweet-toned flavors of juicy blackcurrant-driven dark fruits, some London licorice, a little bit of leather, light plummy tones, a hint of savory oak spice and a touch of sweet baking spice. The powdery, mouth-coating tannins feel quite ripe and gentle at first, but they pile up on the gums, turning the wine slowly into a rather grippy one. The finish is long, ripe and quite dry with layered flavors of piquant savory spices, juicy dark berries, some leather, light woody notes of toasty oak, a little bit of licorice root and hints of sweet baking spices and vanilla pod. The ample, textural tannins make the wine end on a somewhat grippy note.
A juicy, ripe and balanced Moulis-en-Médoc red with enjoyable depth and complexity. Felt relatively similar to Poujeaux 2000 that was tasted alongside, only a bit sweeter, more powerful and slightly more youthful. Despite being on a somewhat ripe and concentrated side, the wine showed good sense of balance and classic Bordelais aromatics, making the overall feel enjoyable and quite serious without being too tightly-knit. The wine has entered its drinking window - seeing how enjoyable and accessible it was now - but there is still a lot of room for further improvement. Drink now or over the next few decades. Fine stuff, recommended.

Liked the bottle we opened in 2017 better than last night's. Reserved black fruit, moderately jammy and with prominent toast on the oak (not a plus). Hopefully just a time out and not a game over, but we'll see.

Coravin fun - Prieure Lichine (My place, Kent Street): New oak, blackcurrant, blackcherry and plums, sweet spice, toast, leather. In the mouth it's juicy and fleshy similar fruit profile to the nose with that sweet spice underpin. Talc textured tannins. A little sour aniseed note on the finish. Hmm.

13% alcohol. Very good cork with no wine penetration. Decanted an hour ahead. Deep colour with little sign of ageing. Good nose with muted blackcurrants. The mouth is similar, with little enough volume but good fruit and acidity. Rather lean but balanced nevertheless. A very pleasing Médoc of the old school.

Opened 4 hours before meal. Could have been better with more time. Excellent nose with tobacco, red fruits. A bit closed in mouth at first, opened quickly in glass to reveal itself in the same way as the nose. A little bit of acidity to last longer and perfectly fitted tanins. At maturity, could hold for some more years.

Got a glass here now and the wine has been decanted for 1 hour. The nose is funky with an off licorice and some stink. The wine swirls around on the palate with red and black cherry, some tart cranberry, spice, and under notes of sweet truffles. The tannins are fully resolved with a short, sweet chewy finish. Not bad

The fully melted tanins give way to a most charming blend of sweet aromas, leather, caramel, cigarbox and some exotic fuit in the finish. Good claret. Drunk over two nights with no real difference between the two. Dark colour and lovely nose which is not quite matched on the palate but still decent enough with nearly 20 years age and not collapsing. I would drink up though before the fruit starts to leave the room..

Richard's 2000 Bordeaux: Deep garnet core, pale rim. Nose shows cool black fruit, mineral, hint of ginger (?), soil. Medium bodied, pure dark fruit, mineral edge, balanced acidity, tannins still a touch firm on the very good length finish. Excellent, will probably be better in a few years.

On March 13, 2018, this was included in a tasting of nine 2000 Bordeaux. When Spleen is this good, it is a testament to the vintage. Piquancy, blackberries, dark cherry, great balance, it is a really nice bottle of wine right now. Great value, it stood up to wines costing five times as much.

2000 Ch. Chasse Spleen offers bflack cherries and cassis in a medium bodied wine. Nice balance with very modest earthiness compared to many Bordeaux wines. Actually, we had it with spaghetti and Italian sausages and, with the perfect level of acidity, it held its own paired against some powerful flavors.

13% alcohol. Very good cork of superb density, with virtually no wine penetration. Decanted an hour ahead of the meal. The colour is dark, with no sign of ageing. The nose is very vivid with blackcurrant aromas. The mouth is in a similar vein, with plenty of energy and a lively finish. There are some residual tannins, but they do not impinge on the enjoyment; the oak is fully integrated. Incredibly youthful, much more so than the 1999 that I had relatively recently. This wine seems to me to have many years of life ahead. Very enjoyable, and a repeat purchase.

Same as the last one in May so I won't go into detail regarding the taste. Very good, with real depth and persistence. Chasse-Spleen did better than many CCs in 2000 - but 2000 is not quite as good as some older vintages were, notably 89 and 90. It's a lovely wine, hence the score, but to be really top notch, it lacks a bit of power and structure. No hurry though, this will keep for several years more and anyone reading this thinking about buying or bidding can do so with confidence.

Eastman. Together with a 1986 Sociando-Mallet, both very good but very different. This shows the ripeness of the vintage. Well-balanced, deep and moderately long. I thought I could taste the Cab Franc but the vineyards are 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 7% Petit Verdot, so I guess not.Drinking very well but no hurry.

The wine looks inky colored. The legs are slow. There is light sediment in the bottle. It smells like leather, blackberry, black currant (cassis), cherry, coffee and chocolate. It tastes like leather, blackberry and strawberry. The body is medium. The wine has round texture. The wine finishes long. The wine has low acidity.

Drank after about half an hour of "air-time". Deep ruby/garnet colour. Nose is red fruit, crème de cassis, montmorency cherries, caramel and butterscotch, earth and forest floor. Palate is powerful, with plenty of grip and back-bone, slightly tannic still, but I believe that will integrate over time. Full-bodied, and lovely balance of sugar and acidity giving a nice long, lingering finish. This wine still feels young and will benefit from more aging.

Much better than the last one, as the colour denoted - a strong, quite deep shade of purply red. Fresh and vibrant nose of blackberry, then a bright introduction to a creamy mouthful of blackberry and blackcurrant with hints of redcurrant and a grainy finish. Just the right blend of power and finesse.

PWS; Chasse Spleen plus a few extra's (@ My place): Concentrated color with still a purple hue. Beautiful bouquet which is still a bit locked, but shows dark forest fruits, vanilla and some smoke. On the palate juicy dark forest fruits and cherries, vanilla, sweet spices like cinnamon, beautiful oak, some pepper and caramel. Overall a full bodied and still powerful wine which even had gained on day two. The wine is still in the first half of its maturity stage and will age well until at least 2023+.

An excellent showing. Perfect middle-age with dark cherry fruit and Chasse's typical femine, floral nose. Not decanted initially, but did find enough fine silt toward the end to clean the last third of the bottle with a coffee filter. Should cellar well for years to come.

Thursday evening. Wine not? Surprisingly deep red color, opaque at center, no obvious bricking. Yet open for business without decanting (deep sediment adhering to bottle). Nose seems more enticing early than late, as pretty, plum and cassis fruit yields to more dense savory notes. Packed with graphite and tobacco. Medium bodied at best, with appealing deep red fruits and classic profile resolving in light but persistent tannins with a dollop of sweet plum . This isn't a long-runner from here, but it's a delicious and multi-faceted wine on the downslope of maturity. Always appreciate the subtleties enabled by 13%.

Coravin 10/13/16: Deep ruby with medium bricking; nose is aromatic with cedar, tobacco, slight chocolate, black fruit; palate is full bodied, rich black fruit throughout in a classic style, smooth texture, moderate alcohol (13% labeled), medium tannins that are integrating but still present and very approachable, medium acidity, ends a little simple but balanced; medium simple finish, balanced. This is nice to drink now but it seems still a bit young on its developmental curve and has room to improve. 89-90+ With air, the aromatics on this are quite nice. Plenty of complexity to its cedar, black fruit, though the palate comes across as simpler. Quite nice now, and worth trying in a few years though it may or may not improve substantially... the reputation is as a good ager. For the original price of $20 this is excellent. 10/24/16: I do think that 10 days post-Coravin has had an effect on this wine. Not as aromatic or complex as it was when first opened, and overall the tannins seem quite rough without the density of fruit to balance it out. Definitely a step down from my last taste, 88-.

PnP. Initially nice, but, after 30 minutes, this completely fell apart and became a watery, diluted drink, which was unbelievable. We could not finish even half the bottle. After having yet another disappointing 2000 Bordeaux, I would say that the vintage did not live up to the hype after all.

A number of years ago a colleague of mine who is a wine buff suggested to me that wines don't get better with age, they just change. I disagreed with him then, and this wine proves my point. As I mentioned 2 years ago, in its youth this was a very unpleasant wine. I have since watched it develop and improve to a stage where it has become an outstanding wine. Aromas of old chesterfield and a length that is just perfect. I can't agree with other recent reviewers - to me this is a stonkingly good wine. It may have a few more years left in it, but it is certainly drinking fabulously now. Easily the best non-Grand Cru Bordeaux (i have tasted) on the market. Life enhancing, in fact!

Starts off very well, after a rich, fragrant nose of brambly fruit and redcurrant, with a decent dollop of ripe blackberry and cassis, but the middle section is a bit compact and the finish is short. Very enjoyable, but it doesn't quite have the requisite depth or persistence. It should improve, this may be a bad patch, but I'm not over optimistic.

The 2000s are a bit of a challenge. You would think chasse spleen at 15yrs old would be ready? It's a bit like the d'angudet 2000 in that it's very hard and astringent. The tanins are prevalent. It's still a good wine and no mistake, to be enjoyed with food, strongish game perhaps. I will leave the rest of the case for another 3 yrs and try again. Tried against the 2001 which is fantastic now and probably a lot cheaper!

Well-crafted left bank that gives a lot of pleasure for the price tag. Quite cool and fairly elegant fruit gives a refreshing experience with the help of good acidity. Weekly tasting group #131; Bordeaux (@ CvR): Cassis, sweet spices and pepper in the bouquet. In the mouth a sweet start of ripe red and black forest fruits, sweet spices, good oak usage, leather and a good balance between fine acidity and sweetness. Also some bell peppers. Round and soft tannin with a pleasant bite. Personally I think this wine will improve a bit with a few more years of ageing. I will probably try another bottle in 2015 or 2016. No problem keeping this until 2020. 89+ for today.

BYO (Casa FV): Complex mature nose, nicely perfumed and extremely typical. Lots of impressions here, such as cassis, spice-box, tobacco, bell pepper, cedar, cigar-box, pot-pourri, brie de meaux and horse pee. Excellent concentration on the palate, with healthy acids and ripe tannins, and an apetizing salty finish. Has reached a perfect plateau, with at least five, perhaps ten years left. The blind-tasters' age estimates differ from 1998 to 2008, and the communes vary from St-Estephe via Pauillac to Margaux, which perhaps says something about this wine's timeless quality and textbook left-bank-ness.

Now drinking well. Nice deep colour, lovely cassis nose / cigar box well balanced on the palate with firmish tannins but good fruit to balance. A lovely wine which will benefit from further keeping - 2 - 5 years ?

Amazing how youthful the color still is. Quite a dark color. Nose: Dark licorice, wild berries, black cherry and a savory component like bouillon. After some time of breathing orange peel gets predominant. Mouth: Still youthful. Consistent with the nose. Pencil shavings, too. There is an animal component like horse saddle and a smokiness, too. Nice "sweetness" from the fruit that kicks in on the mid-palate.In the finish some coffee beans. Expressive and elegant at the same time. It has some muscles without being bold and burly. The tannins are there but they are refined. Somehow a "manly" wine. I am amazed how the wine is evolving while breathing. Drink now or in the next 8 years.

This has been a go to 750 btl 2000 vintage that has surprised everyone. Tons of fruit, structure and balance with deep purple hue and perfect representation of what old world bordeaux claret really is. Low scores confuse me but maybe it is because will see this as angular and too dry on the finish. For me and many of my friends it is outstanding. From the magnum it is even better from the perspective of having more fruit and is absolutely delightful at a ridiculous price point for such a good solid wine.

Good classic Bordeaux, lots of leather and tobacco interwoven with the dark fruit. Great nose, but a touch austere through out the mid and finish that knocked it into the "very good" category.

1st tried this 3 years ago and it was a bitter, very unpleasant wine. What a difference 3 years has made! Opened an hour before drinking and was delighted to find that it had developed into a smooth, elegant Bordeaux. Restrained fruit and lots of secondary characteristics - oak is perfectly balanced. Drinking very well now - who knows what the future holds? Certainly has another couple of years left in it, but it could go on long after that. Great vintage, of course.

Previous notes apply, however, it needs about 4 hours to open and is more balanced now than before. No alcohol quaff, just terroir and fruit. Nice structure but not too complex. While at first there was a sense of high acidity and tannins, they reduced over time. Nice wine.

Nose of dark fruit, cherries, menthol, nail polish, tobacco, mocha, forest floor, vanilla cream, leather. Dark purple to the rim with strong body and structured legs. Earth and dark fruit on the attack and mid palate with chewy tannins, chalkiness, pencil lead, nice acidity and spice on the finish. Tastes like it smelled. Scoring 90 but may evolve to 91. Truly a wine that needs a good steak, lamb or the like.

Elegant and balanced. The nose blew off quickly to reveal black cherries and a touch of cedar. Balanced on the palate, with nice acidity. Light-bodied but hardly a trifle of a wine. Highly enjoyable now. Can't see this evolving to any more structure, richness or complexity.

One bottle left! Of all my 2000's this has been the star so far. Even now the wine benefits from opening a couple of hours before drinking and fills out delightfully. Relatively light but with an excellent balance of fruit, acidity and tannins which have developed to give depth and finish. Lightish nose ubut with hints of cedar and blackberry. Fills the mouth in a satisfying way and lasts. Excellent.

Excellent lean and somewhat tight Bordeaux which exhibits great elegance in the palate. Nose although slightly reticent was also very fine. Still young but has entered drinking window and has ten years of development ahead of it. Savory and cedary finish with blackcurrant fruit and cigar-box spice. Fine grained tannins, good acidity and medium ethereal body. Essentially a food wine.

Ready to go now. Open and complex nose: iron and earth, currants and cassis, pipe tobacco and leather, cocoa-powdered truffles, candied cherries and strawberries, violet and rose. Very smooth attack, ripe juicy tannins, fresh enough acidity, long lusty finish. Drinks wonderfully well at the moment, and might go for ten years more. So glad we bought some of these cru bourgeois eight years ago.

91 pts

Fine flinty almost Pauillac nose with some leather and black currants. Polished dark red fruits on the palate, mixed with leather and spice and a slight green herbaceous note. Fine tannins come through on a lengthy finish of toast, currants, and earth. In that in between zone where there's still some primary fruit but the tertiary elements are starting to emerge. Drinking well now though will continue to evolve. 91-92

Been waiting over a decade to touch, but in the rush of graduation festivities, didn't manage to savor this as much as hoped. Correct, solid claret, with cassis and plums and leather on the nose. Tannins still going strong on the palate--perhaps a longer decant?

With a nose packed with earth, black plums, tobacco and cassis, this powerful, tannic, deep wine could easily pass for a Classified Growth. If you're going to open it now, leave it in the decanter for an hour or more. Else, give it a few more years to allow the firm tannins to soften. As the 1989 is still going strong, this should continue to age for a long time.

Delicious. Quite intense & persistent. Mature fruit, some gravel and chalk, but not much cassis or cedar. Blind it might have passed for a Graves. Very good length. Much better than my last note in March -- it must have been in a dumb phase then.

Tasted in Bordeaux at L'Envers du Decor. Decanted. Dark black color and fading at the rim. Open almost from the get go. Blackberry and stones on the nose. On the palate a really elegant wine with a modestly long finish. Opened up and got better through the night. Drinks great now. Hard to see it improving - perhaps a touch. Drink now and over the next 10-15 years.

90-91 pts

Popped and poured into large Bordeaux stem. Dark purple color to the rim and nearly opaque. Blackberry fruit on the nose with some minty aromas. Medium to heavy bodied and fairly brawny. Blackberry fruit on the palate with some spiciness. A little tar and vanilla. Drinking very young, the tannins are still pretty substantial. Nice long finish where the black fruit kind of lingers. A really nice bottle of wine just entering its peak drinking window. Should last for several more years.

Really yummy. Tar, chocolate and other stuff but we drank it to fast to figure out what they were. I did decant for about 45 minutes and that was worth it. Great bottle from a great vintage. You can drink now, but it will give you quite a few years.

Vibrant fruit on the decant. First taste showed that underlying fruit was there and wanted out; 3 hour decant. First pour revealed a flowery and light cassis nose but unpleasant, astringent bite mid front to back of palate, which completely dissipated from the glass in 5-6 mins. The end result was a really pleasant tasting cassis, light blackberry, and 'four fruits' jam. Not deep but broad enough to cover the palate with enjoyable flavors that last 30 - 40 seconds. Drinking and delightful now but should be a much better developed wine in 3+ years. 90

Pure garnet. Red plum nose with a whiff of olive brine and crushed stone. Classic with some warmth. Good attack showcasing vibrant and ripe red fruits with a good balancing structure. Might very well be at its best right now as the profile is just a bit lean for long term aging. A very solid Bordeaux for dinner enjoyment. Wet tobacco on the finish. (88)

garnet, not too evolved if you consider that this wine is 10 years old. nose of red fruit, but also cassis, cedar, herbal, and darker notes of chocolate or tobacco. nice and round in the mouth, tannins fully resolved, appetising acidity. nice wine, but it would need a bit more substance to make it great. i paid 30 eur for it and would not spend more.

As always, Chasse-Spleen provides a solid, genuine, Bordeaux experience and that's not meant to be faint praise. Generous fruit per the vintage but good structure. Ready to be enjoyed now, but remaining tannin to resolve and just fine left over the next day. Very nice match with Rack of Lamb in mustard glaze.

Gifted by a C-S fun who also rated this wine 78..... Straight forward claret on the palate. Mild on the nose. Colour is the striking bit. Dark like a young malbec. Coming to game we think and has no harsh tannins maybe a few sharp edges here and there but a nice bottle nonetheless.
Decanted for 45 minutes and it needs it.

Tried on because I got scared by a recent review that it may soon need to be drunk. Wine was very smooth, with soft tannins, smell of dark berries, no hint of oxidation or other end-of life-time signs. I think this wine will survive another couple of years, but already perfectly drinkable now.

Solid colour, good nose and good finish. However, I left half the bottle for consumption the following night and it had grown in the bottle hugely. Like an adolescent maturing it had developed both brawn and refinement. Excellent but I suspect will develop further . Wish I had another case to slowly drink in a couple of years.

Beautiful garnet ( I find 2000 routinely has the most beautiful color) Nose had ripe blackberry and green pepper in the background. The taste was similar with some tannins still present. A couple of comments-I find Chasse-Spleen the canary in the coalmine-it is a good wine to be a representative of the vintage. If it is not ready to drink, the vintage isn't. And IMO 2000 needs some time based on my hypothesis. Secondly, I generally don't like green pepper in wine, but I find it more tolerable in less ripe wines. So it was more of a negative here.

Lovely full aroma - blackberries, leather and other savoury and vegetal notes. Took a few hours to open up fully. On the palate the tannins were smooth if a little chalky (I may have needed to give the bottles more than two days rest upon arrival), a lovely fruity full flavour and a nice medium length finish that evolves ending with leathery and cigar notes.

A bit sour and sharp on the nose with red fruits and green, leafy notes. Densely-packed fruit with firm tannins and mouth-puckering acid. Tightly structured and still very youthful, but I'm not sure it has enough concentration to become truly outstanding with additional time. Nonetheless, I expect some improvement.

A deep plum color in the glass with no sign that this wine is 9 years old. Initially it was very tight, but after some air this opened up to scents of violets, earth, plums, black berries, black currant, and cedar. In the mouth it was well structured with medium+ tannin, good acidity, and lush black & blue fruits followed by some oak notes that were obvious...but not overpowering. If I had another bottle I would probably wait another 3-4 years.

This wine is a great value for the price. We decanted it for about an hour and it probably could have used longer because it dramatically improved over the next few hours as we finished it. The nose was not the strongest aspect of the wine; it seemed pretty much closed the whole way. Luckily, the palate opened nicely. There were red fruits including raspberries and strawberries, and it developed smokey hints later on. There is a lot of material in this wine and we felt we needed more time (i.e. more bottles in the future) to understand it fully.

This was a beautiful wine, drunk far too young. It had a deliciously creamy vanilla nose, but it's extremely tightly wound and needs a few years to blossom. After an hour or two in the decanter, this had started to show its potential, which is to be a long-lasting, exquisitely balanced wine.

With air, the aromatics on this are quite nice.

Nice little sweet-and-sour play here. Some more mature complex aromas as well, with sweet spice, wood, herbs and some smoke. Not very concentrated or powerful though. Drink now or hold for a couple more years.

91 pts

With a nose packed with earth, black plums, tobacco and cassis, this powerful, tannic, deep wine could easily pass for a Classified Growth. If you're going to open it now, leave it in the decanter for an hour or more. Else, give it a few more years to allow the firm tannins to soften. As the 1989 is still going strong, this should continue to age for a long time.

Decanted for 45 minutes and it needs it.

Light to medium bodied. Pretty red fruits and a bit earthy. Nice acidity and went well with food.

Tasted at a NCWS "Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel" tasting. Deep colour. Mature elements on the nose. Good blackcurrant aroma. The palate seems reasonably mature, quite intense, slightly vegetal/leafy quality; still some tannin though.

Wish I had another case to slowly drink in a couple of years.

quite a lightweight wine that seems to lack concentration - cannot see it improving - drink soon

Pleasant and elegant wine. Nose of lead pencil, cigar box and a hint of dark fruit. Palate follows the nose with nice subtle dark cherry and cassis. Soft tannins and good structure but a bit short finish.

This wine was surprisingly good. The nose was exceptional and the taste complex and vivid. A longer finish would have given it a 95 rating. The overall taste was far better than any of us expected.

Slight bricking, nose of cassis, cigar box, tobacco leaf and lead pencil, big strong forward palate, everything on the nose follows through with the addition of dark/sweet fruit, mocha and roasted coffee, slightly diluted mid-palate, long suave finish

After an hour in decanter it's opening with some lead/graphite, sweet tobacco, and berries. Add some cassis and wet stone on the palate and you've got a very nice wine w/ plenty of time. Will wait 3 years for my last one.

Ruby-red/purple colour. Great nose of blackcurrant, cinnamon, nutmeg, and minerals. Big nose, but fresh. Full-bodied, very young wine. Not showing much other than cassis and herbs. Needs a lot of time but you can see the potential and quality.
