Deep ruby, showing modest development. Mulberries and cherries on the nose, some spice and earth, fragrant (violets and rose) and a hint of cedar.
Medium bodied. Acidity is still quite bright. Ripe, well integrated tannins. Smooth mouthfeel. Nice balance of structure and elegance. Drinking well now.

PnP it was a little bit closed, opened after 2-3 hours. No change after the next hours. Fresh nose and palate, pepper, black fruits. Still lot of life ahead, silky tannins. Good nice wine, to be paired with dark meat. A little bit closed and short for a solo...90-91

Part of a verticale organized by the château. Very subtle and delicate nose of cedar, pepper, ripe fruit and incense. Well structured and elegant on the palate, still lots of freshness. Noble wood, tobacco, sous-bois, herbs and liquorice. A pleasure to drink and confirming the good level of 2001 in general. Consider drinking now and over the next 2 years.

Decanted and drank. Aromas of leather, lead pencil, blackberry and currant. Flavors of blackberry, currant, iron, earth and hint of smoke. Ends with a 30-35 second finish with smoke and blackberry notes. Drinking great right now. 2001 is so underrated.

Fresher than the last bottle but with a grainier texture, this is still drinking well, with very subtle, refined notes of blackberry and plum, together with a dusty, typically Margalais finish. There is however a lack of zip to the fruit and drinking it alongside the 00 was not a fair comparison. How NM preferred the 01 I'll never know, but to be fair, the 01 is the better wine to open in the next two years.

Really good Giscours which I think has gained some weight since last showing and is now in a great spot. A bit overwhelming stable scents in the beginning but evolved nicely into classic mature margaux perfume after an hour in the glass. Quite a lot of sweet fruit still and a very nice drink. Can go on for at least 5-10 more years but excellent bow for those who like some vigour in the fruit still.

Good nose of blackberry and violet with hints of plum. Quite a mouth-watering start, with raspberry cordial and refined blackberry, a middle section leaning into leather and dark currants, then an elegant finish with more blackberry and raspberry cordial, plus a hint of sour cherry right at the end. Still enjoyable, but not the wine it was a few years ago. The fruit is now autumnal, there is still the acidic grip which made me prefer it to the 2000 at one point, but the sour cherry is gaining ground and it's clear that the sweetness is tinged with bitter overtones. Needs drinking up.

Beautiful deep coloring with only hints of coper tones. Not a very distinguished bouquet, and pretty light as well. Initially dark chocolate and tabaco, developing to delightful long but ever so gentile glass of delicious wine. Very very light and soft tannins to be discovered surrounded by typical fruits. Thank you Edward!

PnP at a restaurant, needed about 15 mins to open, no sediment. This has started its downhill trek as the fruit is receding and was not as good as my last bottle in 2016. Prominent graphite notes, very dark fruit, lean texture. Drink up.

Moden mørk burgunder farge med brun kant. Lukt av stall, solbær, sedertre og tobakk. Moden solbærdominert smak. Litt sviktende fruktighet, medium syre og støvete små tanniner. Min flaske var nok litt over toppen, men god.

Merci Claude (Meursault)

Went into the decanter as we took the first glass, perhaps it warrants a longer decant. Some swirling revealed a lovely perfumed nose that just got gets better with time. Deep, dark fruit. Some cedar, cigar and violets. Hints of nail polish in the first 20-30 mins. Palate does not live up to the nose, unfortunately. Approachable, but not much expression. Some dark fruits. Fine grained and dry tannins in the slightly stinging (and sweet) finish. Good acidity. Perhaps in an intermediate stage, though I do not clearly see what potential should be unleashed. No attractive QPR ratio at the moment me think. 90-91p. Day 2 (keot one glass in the bottle): nose was much more powerful, dominated by sweet cassis, some lead pencil.

PnP at a restaurant, with little to no decanting needed as it is nicely mature. Many 01's are drinking beautifully right now, and this is no exception. A subtle wine of finesse and balance that has medium body and acidity, and exhibits dark fruit, fully resolved tannins, and a bit of earth on the finish. Very little sediment and a fairly textbook mature claret.

A beautifully integrated perfumy floral nose with black fruit, cedar and leather notes that waft from the glass and lead to a silky smooth medium bodied palate showing more black fruit and pepper notes that linger on the drying finish. A charming effort that is really drinking great at present.

Amsterdam UGC Tasting and Winemakers' Dinner (Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky / Café De Klepel): Magnum. Almost twelve years since I last tasted this and it has developed very well. In 2004 it was outshone by the youthful energy and greater weight of the more powerful 2000, but after fifteen years it has attained a finesse and balance all of its own. Elegant, with nothing lacking.

A nearly perfect wine and drinking incredibly well right now. In fact, I would say it is likely at its peak, so drink 'em if you got 'em.
The nose was incredibly fragrant. One of the most fragrant expressions from Margaux that I've ever experienced. More floral than fruity, it smelled of roses, violets, jasmine, apple blossoms, and dark cherry. There was also a strong undercurrent of graphite and charcoal.
On the palate, this was more velvet glove than iron fist. Extremely feminine with well integrated tannins. The acid and tannin gave this wine incredible structure and complexity, but it was smooth as silk at the same time, likely from the high % of merlot. Just an absolutely ridiculous wine.

Decanted for 2 hours, average nose, high level acidity with typical CS black fruit palate. Two hours later much smoother and less acidic. Giscours is one of the better value Margaux 3rd Growths sold in the UK and the 2001 is typical of that vintage, wriiten off at first but much better from 2006 onwards.

First one from a case. Good color, no amber yet, but the wine was crimson at the rim. Margaux fragrance: lilacs, walnuts, currants and cedar. I love what Petite Verdot does to a blend. Wine is silky, but tannins are not yet completely gone. Black fruit in the mouth, well-balanced and delicious.

My blind note, only knowing it was a Bordeaux: Beautiful bouquet with dark fruits like cassis, beautiful oak and some tobacco. On the palate beautiful dark berry fruits as well, beautiful oak, some coffee and spreading through the mouth. Firm acidity and slightly sticky tannin. The wine is ready now and really lovely. Has a future until at least 2017. 90 – 91, but I score it 90 for tonight.

The bottle had a damaged cork (broke in bottle neck) and had aged faster than its years would suggest. So it wasn't as good as prior bottles. Tannins were resolved and showed plum as well as red fruit. But it exceeded my expectations, as I thought it would be entirely spoiled.
And what a crazy night this was: I went to find the Palmer 1997 to serve it, but it was awol. The cork broke in the Giscours. The poultry shears lost their spring, and the handle broke on the 2nd shears. The oven timer didn't run and so the chicken needed more time to cook.

M. Coulon's five stars resort (Lascours, Provence, France): Blind tasting. Very dark hue. Deep and fine nose of blackfruits, with ash and old chineese peper. Presumption of minerality. Very promising. Mouth closed, clustered on black notes as blackcurrent, showing mostly its structure, and minerality, but with finesse. Needs decantation . Excellent still. Difficult to make the show after the previous monuments.

Deep ruby, minerals, Margaux berries, violets, ripe cerise cherries, graphite...this is very impressive...out of a case of halves...the first one we had was more forward than the second, which had a more noticeable tannin and backbone. This will be a good wine for crrent drinking for the next 10+ years.

This is Giscours at its best: fragrant, elegant, with subtle persistence and beguiling fruit. Aromas of blackberries, cream and violet, with a good, fresh attack on the palate with blackberry, blueberry, then leather and spice, followed by a wave of raspberry liqueur and cream, before a long and persistent finale of blackberry liqueur. Excellent stuff.

Judgement Day - 2001 Bordeaux vs. 2001 USA Cabernet Blends (Holiday Inn Chicago North Shore - Skokie, IL): Tasted blind. A modern Bordeaux with thick texture, rich red fruit, moderate acidity, and some oak influence. The floral notes on the palate were nice and mixed well with subtle tobacco, and leather. There was a warming influence of the oak on the palate with some chocolate and warm spices. I thought this was French, but didn't peg it as a Margaux...rating it 8th out of 12 wines.

Weekly tasting group #024; Bordeaux 2001 (@ VD): Garnet red. At first a slight touch of barnyard which disappears quickly and is followed by creamy fruits and a bit lactic impressions. On the palate there is creamy fruit as well, like raspberry, strawberry and blackberry. Soft bitterness and some chocolate. Overall a very ok wine, but not extremely impressive. I have tasted many Giscours, but for me this one is a-typical. It lacks the elegance and luxury Giscours usually has. I don't own a bottle of this wine, but I hope I can taste this again around 2015 to see if it has developed for the better. At this moment I have my doubts if it has the potential.

750. Disc just coming into maturity. With a little air, this opens out beautifully to show a really elegant nose. Currants, flowers, oak, a little barnyard - this is so Margaux, if a little chunky and not as fine-boned as the really great examples. I love it. A rich palate, well balanced if perhaps a little hot. Great typicity here. Beautifully done.
Saw that this is retailing for $85-90, which is absolutely ridiculous. However, at what I paid ($14 - fire sale), it was a steal. At $90, terrible QPR. At 40, I'd say pretty good.

Half-bottle. I decanted the wine for 1.5 hours, poured it back into the bottle and consumed over two days (vacuum-pumped). The wine offered flowers, currant, some blackberry and chocolate on the nose. On the palate the wine showed a solid core of firm fruit (currant and blackberry) and a Coca Cola note. Moderate finish, moderately smooth. The wine seemed more accessible on day two due to less firm fruit. Quite OK, but no Margaux magic.

Really nice, well integrated with solid full bodied firm fruit, meat, a black streak in the middle, some burnt oak and some juicy but acidic tannins. Long finish is a bit tannic, indicating that this wine will hold on for quite a while. A light bodied perfume on top with some sweet high toned fruit shows its modern side. Overall straddles the modern/classic line. Not extremely complex, but has enough going on to keep it interesting. Wish I had bought more on release, it was a bargain relative to today's prices. Drinking well now and just starting to mellow. Looking forward to drinking my remaining bottles over the next 10-15 years. B

Decanted for one hour. Striking garnet. Enchanting nose of blackberry, currant paste, warm earth, tobacco and a little licorice. Soft tannins that are at a perfect stage. Very pleasing and giving. The finish is a bit episodic; in that it comes and goes at the end, however, it does go on for some time. Well balanced. What a treat. 2001 is an overlooked vintage that is very enjoyable and also ideal for the claret zealots. This third growth is quite ready. Drink now - 2023.

Nice purple color, but not as dense as I expected from such a young wine. The nose of 01' Giscours is quite good, dominated by blackcurrant, coffee, and licorice. Concentrated with silky tannins and a solid finish. An elegant and modern wine with gobs of fruit. Of equal quality to the Rauzan Segla '01, which I had at our recent club tasting.

The best part of the day: started having to put one of our meat buns down--really hard... The unfortunate side of farming...
It was nice to end the day on a nice note, gentle tannins, full mouth and grace. I could enjoy mature wine like this on a regular basis. I have a few left and will savor them for the next few years--I remain a fan of the 01 vintage!

Audouzed 3hrs. Decanted. Initially the nose was very light but developed nicely during the evening into a lovely floral, vanilla scent. Palate, on the other hand, remained a little subdued. Still tight, with the last glass being the best, about 3hrs after decanting. Some nice freshness in the finish. Perhaps tending towards the modern end of the Margaux spectrum? Very good, but will leave my other bottles undisturbed for a little while yet..

A classy bottle of quite mature Bordeaux. A lot of barnyard on the nose obscures other scents of cigarbox and perfume somewhat (on the verge of too much brett for me while others loved it). Very harmonius and classic palate, tannins are soft but present, good length. Voted wine of the night by 2 out of 4.

Well balanced, even in body and quite lovely. While not a blockbuster wine, it offers smooth drinking that will last for the next 4-6 years. I see this as in a very sweet spot and would not hesitate to enjoy my stash. Modest in tannin and structure, it will not be a 20 year wine.

Gobs of rich and full bodied fruit, tasty finish with good balance of acid and smooth tannins; not a wine for the long haul, but drinking very nicely at this point. Decatned 2 hours. Purple color to the rim. Very distinctively Bordeaux, with cassis, tobacco and cedar on the nose, awith hints of violets and spice as well. On the palate, this was excellent, with cassis and tobacco on the front palate, followed by lovely mid palate acidity and firm but supple tannins. The fruit and violets came back on the finish. Very nice indeed, but give the next bottle another 4-5 years.

I wasn't especially expectant going in- a glass someone gave me last year was tight, light, and tannic. I gave this 90 minutes in decanter before dinner, turned out as a nice wine. Medium-bodied, ripe tannins present but not intrusive, very floral nose. Dominant fruit is blackcurrant, but as it opened in glass more of a crushed cherries aspect dancing on top. At opening the oak is a little high for my taste, more vanilla-driven than my wont. With time in decanter a more cedary edge that I find more attractive. There's a little tobacco and earth. I would think this will improve over the short-term, I'm marking 2010-2015 as my drinking targets for remaining bottles

Drunk alongside the Ch. Du Tetre 2001, which was much more masculine, forward and somewhat rustic (my French friend preferred the Du Tetre). The Giscours is all about deftness, finesse and femininity. Subtle but lovely. This will mature into something very special. Robert Parker says it's great value because it's only started to improve under new ownership since 1995 and is still undervalued. Drunk at Watsons Wines' Grande Bordeaux Tasting at Happy Valley Racetrack in Hong Kong alonside 70 other wines from 2001/2003.

Have to agree with swyang's note. Color is purple to the rim with a hint of lightening. Nose shows that characteristic Bordeaux cedar, tobacco, and cassis. On the palate the cassis and cedar predominate, but the finish is a bit unresolved (in that it is a bit short and the tannins have not yet integrated). This was decanted for 2 hrs plus. Will probably improve significantly with time as it does seem to have plenty of stuffing.

I think I opened a sleeping beauty. Last night, after decanting for 3 hours, it showed a lot of fresch tobacco and practically not much of others, with a slight bitter after taste.I have had many of other vintages of Giscours and am confident that in a few years it will provide ample pleasure.

Very dark purple in color. On the nose, very perfumed - lots of black and red fruits, toasty oak, and chocolate. On the palate, leans to the red fruit side, plums, cherries, a hint of licorice - juicy, delicious fruit. Nice dose of acidity to balance out the fruit. Great finish - nose filling, concentrated fruit - nice length - tannins clearly present but manageable. Overall, the wine is young, but I loved this wine tonight. Drinking well now, but has the stuffing to age as well. Wish I bought more.

Fresher than the last bottle but with a grainier texture, this is still drinking well, with very subtle, refined notes of blackberry and plum, together with a dusty, typically Margalais finish.
There is however a lack of zip to the fruit and drinking it alongside the 00 was not a fair comparison.

Overall straddles the modern/classic line. Not extremely complex, but has enough going on to keep it interesting. Wish I had bought more on release, it was a bargain relative to today's prices.

A bit of barnyard and leather; still tannic with dark fruits. Somehow feel this will never be outstanding.

Dark colour, even at the edges. Very classic nose with lead pencil and cassis. Delicious intense taste, the attack gives fireworks in the mouth with elegant freshness. Few tannins left. A bit short; a straw fire? Nevertheless, I enjoyed this one.

Dark ruby with a heady nose of plum and anise; pliable, fruity and drinking well now but not over the hill in any way. A tad tarry and tannic, but in a good way. Pleasantly surprised.

This was the second wine in a blindtasting of three 2001 with Chateau Malescot as the winner. The Giscours would probably have been better if Ch Malescot had not stood out.

Zesty acidty, floral & violet nose, perfectly ripe fruit. Perhaps a little monolithic, but I think a few more years will aid complexity.

Nice Bordeaux, not too exciting. Did get better after two hours in decanter. Paired with entrecote, mushroom muffins and salad, good combi. Was expecting a bit more from this chateau that is getting such increasingly good press reviews since ownership by Alberda Jelgersma.

This was a decent but not exciting experience. The nose was pretty disturbing. The flavors became more and more pleasant with air but the nose never resolved.

These are going to be hard to stay away from! Gobs of rich and full bodied fruit, tasty finish with good balance of acid and smooth tannins; not a wine for the long haul, but drinking very nicely at this point. A wine that the English would like--and one that leaves me very satisfied. I might go for a vertical of the 04/05 with this as well--could be an interesting tasting.

Here is what our guests had to say about the Giscours: "Soft; light chalk; not bold." "Good" "I liked the Australian Shiraz way better than the Frency Margaux, but I'm drunk." "The French wine was ok."

Drank with Fireside pies. Decanted for two hours. Probably best between 1-2 hours. Good nose, lots of graphite and lead combined with currants. Gave in to heavy flavors of the pie.

Deep bright purple. Not huge nose, sweet dark & oaky.
Sweet juicy tannins, lemon. Nice, smooth. Some good sweet fruit & some darker toast. Minty herbs. Lemony. A little light. Nice fruit, not incredibly concentrated. Drinkable now.

This wine is showing terrific, dark fruit, lots of currant, and is delicious. (writing from memory). We loved it so much, we bought a case ... before the great Parker review. (But, from tastings, we can tell this wine has now shut-down. Shouldn't open until 2010)
