Nose of black berry, saddle leather, sage, bell pepper, and cigar box, same on the palate, big body, very tasty, oak on the mid palate, mouth filling fruit, showing well tonight, brings back the memories of Justin, the old winery, and Release Day Events, long finish.

Frankly surprised me that I would find anything good to say here. I did not expect this to have anything left, even if stylistically not my cup of tea. Yet, was still quite alive, no sign of huge decline. Not at peak, but still drinking 'well'. Yet, 'well' here means fruit and vanilla, not much else. Still happy to have had it in the mix. #6 of 6 in a 1970's/1980's Cali tasting.

Blind Tasting of Aged Napa Cabs (Residence): This was the fruitiest of the group tasted at this sitting and had the most obvious oak. This was the surprise of the evening (IMO). Recent vintages of Silver Oak Cab Sauv are not generally viewed as being able to stand up to extended aging, but this 80’s era vintage was balanced and still fruity. Perhaps, a product of original purchase provenance. A nice wine with tremendous character for 30+ years of age. In a blind tasting, had the most obvious oak on the nose and palate. This fit the Silver Oak tasting profile, making for a high probability of identifying accurately.

At 33, while showing showing character and age, this is still approachable and luscious with dark garnet color, slight rust colored bricking on the rim, medium bodied, tangy oak predominates from start to finish on the nose and flavors accenting cherry fruit layered over dusty herbal and green pepper notes with black cherry, leather and forest floor, and hints of cassis on a tangy tongue coating oaky finish.
deepish brick color, sexy cassis and red cherry nose on opening, slight herbal notes, on the palate fully mature and just on the edge of cracking up, a ripe mid-weight cherry and cassis fruit with some herb and forest notes, plus as I have found over the years- where the oak in the Napa bottling can remain separate and a bit harsh there is no such worry with the Alexander, a long and genteel finish, a lovely wine that held its own with the 1985 Mouton and Margaux tasted alongside but drink soon. ****, ready to go.
