Lunch Bistro Rex: Opened 4-5 hours before service and slow-ox, this was unimpressive on opening but was transformed in the glass later. Medium scarlet red in colour and no more than medium body, Merlot fruit, violets, red fruits and coffee on the nose with a suave creamy palate and a long finish. This would have paired well with the Albert Morot, as the wine is quite Burgundian in structure. Consistent with the bottle from a few years ago and delicious but not for keeping 18.5.

Debate, Chateau Margaux or Palmer. I was right onto Palmer and stuck with it🤗 @Riaan was onto CM.
The wine is so Burgundian it is fine, ripe and good length. Didn’t have the CM length for me. Absolutely on apex now and you could see with air that it lost a little freshness.
I would not wait on this and rather drink up.

Short notes. Drinking beautifully. Fully integrated top notch Bordeaux as you would expect them to be. Life is full of surprises: 1983 is supposed to be a better year for Margaux so i was not expecting this Palmer to be that strong (and was disappointed by a Margaux 1983 a couple of years back), so overall a good surprise. Evolved quite quickly so would not recommend to decant.

Sometimes when one meets their wine hero.. its as special as one expects it to be.
In this case, this Palmer 1982 was not only beautiful and memorable, but it kept evolving over the night. Ripe blackberries and cassis, with sweetness which keeps developing over the night.
Incredibly the acidity (Medium+) kept this so lively. Such staying power.. despite this being a wine of over 40 years. After 4 hours of air in our glasses and in the bottle, this Palmer 82 gained better density and more coffee aromatics too.
Château Palmer is actually a 3rd growth, but in some vintages it would clearly give the 1st Growths a run for their money. In this 1982 vintage.. Circa 140,000 bottles were produced. 47% Cab, 47% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot
It seems that other than Chateau Margaux, the 1982 Palmer is the strongest wine from what was the weakest appellation of the vintage, Margaux.
At this point in Palmer's history, the estate was being run by Peter Sichel, and was under the ownership of, as today, the Sichel and Mahler-Besse families.
Regarding this legendary 1982 vintage.. Heatwave in July, and the hot dry harvest (although with a damp August and early September) suited these grapes.
Thanks RN for not only spoiling us with the home cooked lamb and steaks, but for sharing this gem!

Medium scarlet red in colour and no more than medium body. Immediately floral on opening, with lavender, violets and plummy red fruits. Supremely elegant, with a suave palate and a long finish. Not as punchy as some other 1982's BDX, and this bottle probably better a decade ago, but a beautiful wine and very Palmer 18.75
