Rather a remarkable amount of fine (and ultra fine) sediment for a 375 bottle. Decently pleasant and proper claret. Probably aging more favorably in 750s.

Opened and served and was singing from the start. St Julien juiciness helps here and it felt that it was really in a good place at this stage. Still very much on the fruit but well evolved with earthy and soft spice note. Ever so pretty and well enjoyable. An easy 92 from us and fro the price a great find.

Reveals a deep ruby hue in the glass, very dark almost plum setting the stage. Its nose is a delightful medley of cherries, plums, and an understated spiciness. On the palate, the wine is predominantly fruit-driven, supported by smooth and supple tannins indicative of its current evolutionary phase. The finish lingers, drying, with a slight touch of greenness still perceptible. The varietal makeup is: 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot, contributing to its layered complexity.

Bought at retail. In tip top condition, with the cork barely soaked past the tip. Despite being seventeen years old, there was only a bit of lightening at the edge and nothing remotely tertiary about it until it had been in the glass a couple hours. Red currants, mocha, and cedar on the nose and palate right from the cork pull, but better on the very elegant nose than the somewhat anemic palate, which being a bit uneven, unenthusiastic, and short never quite seemed to satisfy. A good ‘06, for sure, with vintage-defying, easygoing, dusty tannins (maybe too easygoing) but no intensity, though the acidity seemed fine. In the end, it’s a bit like the ‘04—you did well enough if you bought these as futures, but they are not things for the rest of us to buy now at $69 US per bottle. 13% ABV (good/**/88)

Enjoyed with grilled steaks this evening, out of a 375ml bottle. I have 3 more 1/2 bottles. This 17 yr old St Julien is aging nicely, showing a nice black fruit profile, with moist soil notes, cassis, tar, and medium acidity. There are nicely resolving tannins on the longish, delicious finish, drink through 2028 or so in this 375ml format.
