Winefield's pre-sale tasting: I often have a kind of struggle with the older vintages of Talbot with often a rubbery impression in the bouquet and this '70 had, for me, that rubbbery impression. In the second part of the taste the wine was more balanced, but not so elegant.

Red berries, cherry, cedar, cigar tobacco and leather. Bit of brett and funk, but the silky palate feel pulls it out of mediocrity. Very good wine here and typical of older Talbot.

Not the best bottle. Decent fill but slightly moist capsule indicating some leakage. Cork not very tight and wet but of course came out easily with the Durand. Still a very healthy garnet in the glass with only slight bricking towards the rim. On nose and palate a musty and herbal wine though, slightly oxidative too but there is still some fruit. Drinkable but clean bottles should be showing better. NR

Musty in its old age, but opened up nicely as evening progressed. Toward the end of its journey, I’m glad we enjoyed it at this point. Capsule and cork perfectly intact, but cork fell apart.

Decanted for about two hours; good fill, soaked but still intact cork. This is killer. Nose is classic old Bordeaux; smoky, old leather, gravel, forest floor in the fall. Palate has great acidity, a hint of red fruits (still!), leafy, charred earth, sappy, long finish with tannins totally resolved but still present. Amazing wine, even after all these years.
