Ronen brought a double magnum of this to his 60th birthday party at Soigne in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Everything suggested that the bottle would be bad. First, the fill, which was very low, mid-shoulder. Second, it was transported horizontally, then stood up quickly before pouring. Third, the cork was a brittle mess. To my surprise, the wine was not only sound, it was also pretty good! The nose imparted an "old wine" smell, along with notes of cedar and volcanic terroir. The palate showed plummy and black fruits, a fuzzy mouthfeel and a relaxed texture. The wine stayed alive through the meal and held my interest, and my surprise.

First bottle disappointing but acceptable, the second bottle produced more sweet fruit still present, although faded, and resulted in an elegant, savoury wine, like delicate lace but with length and soft mouth cleansing acidity and some fine tannins remaining.

Bordeaux 1962 (semi blind) to celebrate Robert's birthday (Amsterdam Wijn Antiquariaat): Little black berries, concentrated fruits, mineral and some orange in the nose. Some noted an asparagus tone. Medium bodied, earth, truffle and tar on the palate, relatively high acidity. Interesting bottle.

At home with K at dinner. Nice wine; though a bit austere. Clearly past its peak, but drinkable. However, at sixty dollars, I expected more.
