  • Bordeaux 2022 barrel samples and some additional vintages (Solliden in Stockhom): Good concentration with smooth dark berries.

Not a structured wine but this was very enjoyable and for me next to Branaire Ducru one of the bargains at this Bordeaux en primeur 2022 tasting.

  • Bordeaux 2022 en Primeur and some recent vintages: Jean-Michel Laporte coming from La Conseillante is the new technical director here since 2020. Talbot is certainly not the most prestigious name in St.Julien, but the wines are attractively priced and consistent. I liked the 2022 very much here. An elegant and precise Cabernet wine, rather on the light side but not thin. 92-93

  • Bordeaux 2022 barrel tasting event (Papiersaal Sihlcity, Zürich): Main takeaways: 1/ Despite a considerable amount of hype, this came across as bi-polar vintage with for every insanely good wine at least one dead-on-arrival counterpart. 2/ High alcohol levels, over-extraction and cooked fruit appear to be common pitfalls. 3/ Top wines were 1. Figeac (98), 2. Brane Cantenac (97), 3. Les Carmes Haut Brion (96). Full list of 20 wines and scores in included in the tasting story.

    Tasting note:
A broad, leathery base with ripe red cherry and a touch of perfume which was not enough to rebalance the dominant secondary aromas. The palate then downright alcoholic with drying, coarse tannin.

  • The 2022 Talbot shows a plum, boysenberry-driven nose with licorice developing with swirling. The tannins are really suave on the palate - general manager Jean-Michel Laporte tells me that pumping over was stopped 70% before the end of fermentation (usually 10%) in an effort to prevent excess extraction during the alcoholic phase of fermentation. Just when you're taken with its lushness, a nice zip of acidity makes itself known and this really does feel like a beautifully done, complete, and clean Talbot. The finish is really quite impressively long.

Talbot is really hitting its stride now with Jean-Michel Laporte at the helm. Beyond the elimination of brettanomyces from the wine, you really get the feeling that the inherent character of the estate is again being maximized.

    94-95 (+?)

  • Spice, flowers, currants, oak, cherries, and spearmint produce the aromatic profile. The palate is elegant, fresh, vibrant, and energetic. The red berries deliver lift, sweetness, length, and complexity. You can look at this as the perfect juxtaposition between classic, and modern, with age worthy structure, and sweet, ripe freshness in the fruits. The wine is produced from blending 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot. 13.5% ABV, 3.75 pH. Yields were 40 hectoliters per hectare. Harvesting took place September 9- September 28. Drink from 2024-2040. 93-95 Pts.
