Round Three. Worth the wait. Balanced and integrated. The tannins have resolved, there is now a distinct middle and deeper range of flavor layers. The fruit still shines but it’s now in harmony.

Amazingly balanced wine with a touch of sweet black currant fruit. A lovely vanilla touch but also a good backbone with a little tannins and an amazing acidity.

Well, this is just a home run from the start. Full bodied and well-rounded, tastes of cooked dark berries, muted chocolate, leather, and slight oak. smooth as silk. Truly a legend! After 1st tasting, I decanter this after 1 hr and it opened even more. After 2 hrs it opened up to a crescendo of fruit and chocolate flavors. The scents of wide flowers, soil, and slight plum.

2/18/23, 9:01 PM - I am so sorry I missed it. I opened one tonight and decanted for few hours. I think it was a mistake as after few hours it shut down but kept the forward tannins. I still have few bottles the next one I will only decant for 1 hour and drink it slowly. Thanks for your response.

What a wine! Mind-blowing in every sense of the word. The nose, with its explosion of earth, flowers, tobacco leaf, ripe red and dark fruits grabs you. But the magic happens as soon as the wine hits your palate, coating every inch of your taste receptors with layers of fruit that just do not quit. The finish moves past the 60 second mark with ease. This is stunning today and will be even better in 10-20 or perhaps more years.
  • rashcar commented:

Obviously it needs time but I doubt that from here we can extract a true elegance at some point. And at such a price there are hundreds of better examples for much less.

Y para terminar una supuesta joya moderna, un brunello parkerizado que sigue enamorando hoy en día a los críticos: al paladar es gigante, poderoso, muscular y opulento. I was not expecting too much when the cork crumbled even using an ah-so cork puller. But wow was I surprised on the first sniff and sip after I splashed it back and forth 6 times ( my version of decant-arrested). Though there is a definitive orange rim to the wine it is still very much fresh and alive. On the nose initially forest floor, earth, tobacco and hint of leather. Then evolved to ripe red fruit after 2 hours. But the palate on this is just wonderful. Blueberries, dust and plums then ripe plums and menthol and eucalyptus. I chose this wine to watch AFC playoffs but it turned to be Super Bowl worthy! The wine kept evolving all night getting richer and deeper. Matched with both chocolate mousse and a New Zealand ultra creamy milk chocolate and was very pleased. The finish is at least 45 seconds long and just makes you want another sip as soon as it dissipates. My initial score was 94 but as the wine evolved I had to raise it, first 95 then 96

The bouquet is a fascinating blend of sour cherries, mint, roses, apricot and some remote truffles (just wait).
It’s so long and intense, one should wait at least another 2-5 years and enjoy it over the next 2-3 decades. I’m happy to have 6 more bottles which I bought at the cantina 4 1/2 years ago.

The wine shows trademark Sassicaia aromas of sweet flowers and fresh Cabernet stems as well as notes of blackberry compote, plums, licorice, hints of classy oak as well as future promises of leather, earth, cigar box and tobacco. In the mouth it is rich, fresh, succulent and totally drinkable. As with all wines of this caliber you would better wait another 10 years to let it round up and develop even more complexity and grace.
All that being said, it is still not on par with the best Bordeaux stalwarts.

  • rashcar commented:

6/17/19, 9:29 AM - Hello Dave. I have been buying lot of 2000 and 2003 Bordeaux because they are starting to drink well. On the other hand some experts are into young wine in a way they enjoy the wine beyond the tannin. You just have to drink the young wine at cooler temperatures so it won't bite as much and enjoy the structure and the finish. To enjoy full maturity one has to wait at least 10 years. My friend Eric Jensen who is the founder of Booker wine out of Paso Robles told me that he does not believe in aging wine. If wine is made well it is ready to be drank right away. I think the key is to become familiar with a particular young wine and not to decant it rather drink it slowly out of the glass and see how it develops and base on your finding then you decide whether to decant or not for the next bottles.

Tasted at a local wine shop with the winemaker/owner who is an American woman from NYC. Medium to dark garnet, opaque in the center. Wonderful nose that is floral, fruity, minerally, and spicy with just a touch of vanilla. Great texture and viscosity. Deep ruby. Very closed on the nose. Strangely beefy earthy and savoury. Not dirty but certainly not something you want to linger over. Not really showing much exotic spice and soil notes that you would be hoping to see in a 21 year old first growth! Palate is quite a bit more exciting. A lot of density and complexity, beautiful ripe plummy fruit. Texture and density again. Many layers but hard to separate out indicating it is still far from ready. Very long. Great fruit with wonderful balance. 94+ on the palate!

I think this just needs more time. At least 2-5 years before I expect some of the more effusive notes described by others might be forthcoming from this en primeur case. 35 of 36 to go which is the good news!!

Layered, transparent and focus.

97+. You need to drink this alone, over 3 days, but better do so from 2022. The bouquet is floral, fruity, mineral, savory (starting 2nd day) and sweetly spicy. It ripples gently yet surely on one's palate, w/ effortless concentration, finishes long and gentle. no hurry. Great wine indeed.

Well the wine could be shut downhe wine should be shut down now as fellow cellartrackers mentioned. But in preparation for this tasting, I took the bottle from wine chamber last september and it sit thru winter heating with me, so it should be softer than your normal bottle.

Also, my comlaint besides the fact that i didn't grab more bottles when it's available twice as "cheap“ as today : the cork is way too short! The wine can live 50 years for sure, most not likely the same for the cork.

Modest tannins, but not much finish. A well-made wine for sure, but I found it to be pretty simple. For me, it lacked depth and complexity. One of the best bottles of this vintage I can recall tasting. This continues to soften, fill out and add nuances to the concentrated, lush, rich, full, floral, pure style of the vintage. With a genuine depth of flavor, rich, silky textures and soft tannins, the sweet, deep red fruits in the finish hang with you for close to 60 seconds. By 2025, this should enter its plateau of maturity and will offer pleasure for at least 40 more years after that.

2/4/19, 7:06 PM - I am fortunate enough to have few more bottles. I tried one last year and it was everything Jeff wrote. Go ahead and open it but decant it for couple of hours and drink it over the following few hours and enjoy!

Mineral and some earthy funk on the nose with the gewurtz perfume buried underneath. And some power on the back.

Great wine in the great year.

11/28/18, 6:01 AM - 94 points! I drank two bottles thus far and I gave it 99 both times. Only reason I didn't give it 100 in case I ever had something better.

12/20/18, 11:44 AM - Mark1npt thanks for your comment. I understand that there is also bottle variations due to many reasons one being storage and handling. I tend to agree with Jeff Leve on this amazing juice. I just don't see how wine could be better. The layers of characteristics and aromas. The structure! The complexity! The balance! The finish the coats the mouth for more than one minute!! Again I don't see how wine could be better.

11/27/18, 7:34 AM - Hi I am a bit confused with tasting note. Your words lead me to believe that you enjoyed and liked the wine but your score of 75 means it is a horrible wine! Did you punch the wrong number on your keyboard?

There is much purity here, this is like eating, perfectly ripe fruit off the tree. The supple-textured berries with their luscious flavors coat your palate with flavor. Yet, the wine is not heavy. Everything is in perfect balance, due to the lift and acidity. Full-bodied, concentrated and with a serious depth of flavor, this is still young, but on the other hand, it is so good, it is not a bad idea to pop a cork in its youth, just to see what all the fuss is about. Else, wait another decade. Either way, this wine rocks!

Interesting eucalyptus elements on the nose with fruit being surprisingly shy, but it drank beautifully with stunning mouthfeel and a lasting finish that came in waves. An epic wine.
