In Breck, before dinner. A wonderful wine. Has structure, sweet fruit, fine tannin. Elegance, class, finesse, and power. It's ready to roll and I think will likely stay on a plateau for a bunch of years before aging out.

Not to rock the boat, but I was disappointed with this wine. Decanted for 2 hours and drank over the next 3. Not much nose to speak of. Round mouth feel. Soft, elegant and balanced. Modest tannins, but not much finish. A well-made wine for sure, but I found it to be pretty simple. For me, it lacked depth and complexity. Maybe, I was expecting too much...but, I have had other Paso Robles syrahs that I have enjoyed more, and at much lower price points. Perhaps, it is too young and will improve and show more in a few years? Time will tell.

Deep ruby core with fading, almost colorless rim. With air time, bursting aromas of blackberry, tar, bonfire, expresso, vanilla, nutmeg and black truffle. Silk like palate despite of its immense concentration of milk chocolate, mineral, ripe blue and red fruits, well integrated toasty sweet oakiness, earth, hint of savoury and nuttiness developing on the lingering finish. Layered, transparent and focus.

One of the best bottles of this vintage I can recall tasting. This continues to soften, fill out and add nuances to the concentrated, lush, rich, full, floral, pure style of the vintage. With a genuine depth of flavor, rich, silky textures and soft tannins, the sweet, deep red fruits in the finish hang with you for close to 60 seconds. By 2025, this should enter its plateau of maturity and will offer pleasure for at least 40 more years after that.
  • rashcar commented:

2/4/19, 7:06 PM - I am fortunate enough to have few more bottles. I tried one last year and it was everything Jeff wrote. Go ahead and open it but decant it for couple of hours and drink it over the following few hours and enjoy!

There is much purity here, this is like eating, perfectly ripe fruit off the tree. The supple-textured berries with their luscious flavors coat your palate with flavor. Yet, the wine is not heavy. Everything is in perfect balance, due to the lift and acidity. Full-bodied, concentrated and with a serious depth of flavor, this is still young, but on the other hand, it is so good, it is not a bad idea to pop a cork in its youth, just to see what all the fuss is about. Else, wait another decade. Either way, this wine rocks!

A pure pleasure, enjoyed with good friends who are serious wine lovers. The first impression was: smooth, supple, and rich. Nose and flavors of cedar, tobacco, gorgeous fruit, and cassis. Dark red, very slight browning, almost opaque. 12.5% alcohol, thank-you-very-much! We drank it over two hours, and while I was half expecting the common decline to spoilage, this beauty only developed more smoothness and intensity. This is the joy of well-aged Bordeaux.

My first Sin Qua Non experience. It was an intellectual tasting experience. While this is not my style of wine, it has to be respected for what it is and what they are able to get out of their grapes. Incredibly rich in fruit with layers of complexity. There is so much going on in the glass, I struggle to describe each of the layers. Consumed next to a Cayuse Syrah (prior tasting note). If the Cayuse was akin to a Cote-Rotie, the Sin Qua Non is akin to a fine Australian Shiraz. Almost a medicinal cough syrup finish that should mellow out with some time in bottle. The finish is not offensive, just powerful and long. If drinking now, give it at least an hour to aerate. I won’t be rushing out to buy more as I’d prefer to allocate those funds to wines more in my wheelhouse. Nevertheless, I can respect why some choose to buy this wine.

Moderately aromatic. Mid bright berries, some heat on the nose. Touches of sweet baking spice, oak and a bit of red flowers - hard to get beyond that heat unfortunately.
Palate is medium full bodied with moderate dark red cherries, cola, some sweet spice. Not quite as mouth coating and textured as I would expect - definitely lots of fruit and spice though.
Overall this is a slightly over-hyped wine I guess - at over $100/bottle retail. It's good and I'm sure lots will enjoy this but you can get much more elegant and nuanced wines for a little more than half of this Plumpjack.

Not overripe, nor oxidative, no alcoholic heat on the finish. VCC did a fine job here picking not too late given the sunny vintage. Confirmation on the palate. Full bodied, remains fresh and elegant for the size. A dream Merlot blend start to finish! Much more ready than the 2010. Like 1982, these 2009 seem to drink well at almost any age. I would wait till 2022 though to let more secondary aromas to develop.

Opera Wine 2017 - 100 Great Producers (Verona, Italy): A decade more before it's ready? I should think so, for my palate anyway. That said, I enjoyed it, but it didn't wow me in any way, it didn't move me. Perhaps the inner beauty isn't ready to reveal itself yet, or perhaps it's just not there, that this is all there's going to be. Who can say at this young stage, and for that matter, perhaps the bottle was less than ideal. Either way, given today's performance, I would not be looking to acquire this wine for my cellar - at 52, I'm not sure I'd be alive to enjoy it if/when it decides to become glorious, assuming it can; I've seen what these can do after 20 years, and the wait's almost always worth it. HOLD!

12/14/17, 7:08 PM - I feel you. I am 58 and collecting wine is a bitter sweet experience. Sweet because I enjoy drinking and collecting bitter it reminds me I am getting older. Like the 2015s Bordeaux are supposed to be a good vintage however one has to cellar it for 20 + years!

Opened about 5 hours before dinner and decanted about 2.5 hours before dinner. Much more open than the first bottle 5 years ago as you’d expect, but still at least a few years away from entering its optimal drinking window. Yet not a complete waste to drink now: muted but fine nose of red and black plums, cedar and some mixed berries. Beautifully balanced. Very fine finish.

Now that the case is open and on the racks, I’ll be tempted to pop one again around the holidays in 2018, but like all the top 2000 BDX I’ve tried, it will be 2020 or later before they really hit their stride.

11/27/17, 9:34 AM - Thanks for your TN. Do you think it needed more decanting? Did it improve in the glass?

11/28/17, 7:52 AM - Excellent feedback. I am opening one of my 4 bottles tomorrow and based on the experience I will decide when I will drink the remaining bottles. I called Chateau Margaux and they suggested a two hours decant in a wide decanter and more if decanter is not extra wide but no more than 3 hours. I am 58 years young and aging is becoming a concern especially for newly released wine as I am not guaranteed I will be around in 20 years and If I am whether or not my doctor/health will allow me to drink anymore. We shall see! In the mean time I am planning on enjoying wine for as long as I can! Thank you for your feedback. Cheers! Robbie Ashcar

Had this last night at a restaurant right out of the bottle (no decanter offered) and it was extremely tight at first taste, with tart cherries, some herbs and licorice on the nose at first whiff. This definitely needed some air, as it got better over the course of dinner, but if I was tasting this blind I would never think that it would be a WS95 rated wine, let along WS98. The QPR might have been good at first release, but for the price this is currently going for, one can definitely do better.

ohmigoodness. This is an amazing wine - blew my socks off... Buh-bye!
Seriously tho - structure, fruit, body, acidity - all outstanding. If I were a dog (shut up!), I’d roll in this. It’s delicious.

Go big or go home right? Last night and final wine of the cruise we decided to grab this....why not its 50% off right?

Deep mix of garnet and ruby red core with medium garnet edges. Layered nose of a 2010 with damp forest floor, a little stinky, leaves, red berries, cigar box and more spices. Heavy tannins (7.5/10) and balanced acidity. Well integrated and full bodied. Lots of red berries on the palate with earthy undertones and notes of tobacco leaves and bramble berries. A touch of dark rocks too. Excellent wine with a beautifully long finish. Drink till 2032.
