I haven't had a bottle of this since '07. My next to last bottle now.
A fantastic nose. Mature yet bright with autolytic, beautiful Maillard notes, honeyed, floral, with terrific freshness. Laser sharp and finely detailed on the palate. A fine fading bead, becoming more vinous texturally, yet losing no freshness. Bright and detailed on the palate, with citrus as much as orchard fruit, hazelnut, and most of all a sense harmony. A complete wine and one of the best Champagnes I have had in years. Fantastic. I do not see this bottle with terrific provenance to be fading soon, but I also doubt it will get much better. It's joy to drink now. Carpe Diem. 97

Another consistent excellent showing for the ‘85 Dom Pérignon. Obviously tertiary yet with good energy and a nice, if brief, spiral of tiny bubbles. Meaty, not heavy. Good acidity and balance. Developing rather than fading.

Yet another wonderful bottle of ‘85 Dom Pérignon. Excellent spray of pinpoint bubbles. Beautiful complex aroma of brown butter and croissant. Full bodied and creamy with a moderately long finish. While the bubbles disappeared over time the flavor did not.

Gotta like an aged champagne. Dark color, little btls upon opening. Something in the back of my head said wait and it opened up beautifully after an hr. The last sip was devine. Drink to enjoy the experience.

Definite a dark color - all nuts and sherry with a hint of maple syrup to start but that oxidation largely blew off within 30 minutes to be a fairly classic old Dom. This bottle was definitely end of life so I would prob drink up if I had more in the cellar.

Napa 2023: the quieter version; 2/6/2023-2/11/2023 (Napa/Sonoma California): Love love love this wine. It’s very much the aged champagne so you have to like the more nutty notes and maybe just a touch of oxidation but not so bad. Still quite a vibrant and happy wine. Drinking very well. Not as easy to find these days and definitely not as easy to find at a semi-reasonable price point so we aren’t drinking a ton of them but it is quite enjoyable.

blind In good shape, many of the (well stored) 80ies DP are well drinkable now. As 82, 88 and especially the 83. Like the toastieness of this wine, still fresh acidity and bubbles. 95

Sadly my last bottle from about 5 different 1980s-1990s Dom vintages that I got out of a well-stored collection. Bubbles were perhaps a bit light compared to a more modern vintage, but still excellent all around.

Bright orange robe showing a lot of life. The nose is expressive with mouthwatering notes making me feel like I’m in a pastry shop: toasted pecan, pie crust, crème brûlée, custard, dried apricot, toasted pineapple. The mouth is full of life with still vigorous acidity and ephemeral bubbles. A medley of honey, caramel, bruised apple and star fruit meet with a hint of mushroom, making this wine go full circle. Long and persistent finish making you wish there was more left. Grandiose wine

This was just awesome. If you blinded me I'd never have guessed 85. It was so young and fresh and bright and clearly a very well stored bottle with tons of age left to it. A real treat to get to drink again.

WIMPS Champagne and Chardonnay Offline (La Trompette): My first time having Dompers this old. I thought it was gorgeous but can see how some thought this was edging over the hill. Really rich caramel, mushroom and nut but a good cut of acidity to make this feel balanced. A treat to try this

Still full of interest and flagrantly exhibits old Dom Pérignon character. Essentially beyond fruit now, it’s about hazelnuts, almonds, smoke and oregano. A modest number of bubbles manages to create a brief mini-foam and a slight prickle on the tongue. A totally different drink from a young Dom Pérignon.

Well, this particular bottle was in mixed conditions. Very little bubbles, very pleasant, so that was good. Madeira-Sherry smell, a bit worrisome and very dark golden amber color. Still worrisome. Aside from the madeira smell, over time some marine, seashells caramelized oranges, sure nuts. On the palate the wine is still very alive, with its acidity that totally supports the madeira taste. Very long, with a lot of coconut as it opens up. Mineral. Overall, reading the previous comments it seems that my bottle was way more evolved than others commented here. I guess that with these many years bottle variation is pretty large. Overall, I would not buy it conditional on my bottle. That said, a great experience.

Another brilliant ‘85 Dom Pérignon, this one sourced from WineBid and perfectly preserved. Amazingly active spray for age and the bubbles are about as small as can be. Merely faintly bready, as usual with Dom Pérignon it’s the complexity and subtlety of the mixed citrus that intrigues. Doesn’t fade at all when kept well chilled yet shows even better as it warms.

mature golding color, ethereal brioche and almonds on the nose, palate broad and deep with apples, ripe citrus peel and a gorgeous creamy mousse, fine long finish with some perky lime acids on the tail end, light caramel notes with time, fully mature and ready to go- and has come out a bit edgier than the 64 or 66.
****+, ready to drink

Gareth's glorious game dinner (Canary Wharf): Lovely example of mature Champagne. Certainly mature, but not overly so given its age, retaining some effervessence and having a nice balance of tertiary and fresher flavours. Honey, sour yoghurt, popcorn, baked apple, blackcurrant, verging on herbal. Would have been glad to drink multiple glasses of this!

By dint of drinking modern brut natures, you immediately feel the more generous doses of these vintages of yesteryear. This is not a reproach anyway because I consider that the dosage brings richness and lengthens to old champagnes.
Nose of candied apricot and honey. Still alive but discreet effervescence.
Incredibly fresh on the palate. The dosage is noticeable but well integrated. The roasted aromas and salted butter caramel blend to give a nice depth to the wine. The richness of the juice is animated by a beautiful acid frame, the wine is clearly not turning 36 years old. It's as delicious as it is elegant, with a beautiful, intense caramel finish that sets the stage for a nice salty length.
I know recent vintages are controversial, but I've never been disappointed with an old Dom Pé, it's still fit, linear and excellent.

not blind, Magnum Wow, a perfect Magnum. All I want in an aged champagne. Some nuts, brioche, toast but most important bubbles and lime freshness. Still on the fresh side. Sublime. Some oysters in the middle and some tea biscuit in the finish. One of the best I have ever tasted. 100

Wow. Maybe the single greatest champagne experience of my life. Nose of lemon, toffee, pineapple cake, spices. On the palate, soft mousse, fantaaric acidity and richness. Juat pure class. I am not typically a huge fan of Dom since while it'a always very good it never has that "something else" but age has given this wine class in spades. Shattered my first glass of this by accident on the floor, which was extremely sad...would have slurped it up if I could have found a LifeStraw, lol.

Golden in colour, extremely fine bead, which dissipates visually rather quickly. On the palate, it retains some further persistence. On the nose, we are in to a somewhat oxidative realm, honey, toasted nuts, bakers yeast and brown spices. On the palate, very lovely with a fine bead of acid. Finishes long with notes of dried apricots, marmalade, burnt sugar and decaying lemon peel.

Amazingly fresh and youthful. This had some aged characteristics (mushroom, mushy apple, butterscotch) but I did not get any coffee/toffee elements that I detect with Champagne of this age. Incredibly long drawn out finish and moderate bubbles.
Thanks Joe!

[Blind] Looking a little orange in the glass. Great nose right out of the gate, developed but still has orange citrus and zest. Complex secondary and some tertiary aromas. Palate is still bright and vibrant. Orange fruit with good effervescence. Bready (DP?) High acid drives flavours. Freshness and lift enhances the more mature and savoury components. MacIntosh toffee, salted caramel, orange rind, praline, almonds... First encounter with this wine in four years. Classic and terrific.

For over a decade I have chosen the ‘85 vintage of Dom Pérignon as the best to drink now. Nothing has changed. The most impressive character is how it evolves, deepens and gains complexity for however long you leave it in the glass, however much it warms up and however many bubbles it loses. Beautiful light gold color. Pinpoint mousse leads to a delicate couronne. Tangy mellow acidity gives focus without angry acidity. Some bourbon and caramel too. Dom Pérignon at its very best.

Tasted Blind. A pristine bottle. Unmistakenly aged Dom. Deep gold color, still have some fine effervescence. Toasty, yeasty, apricot, mazripan, dried fruits like prune and nuttiness. Zesty and smoky on palate with a long acid line supporting the mousse and complex tertiary characters with minerality adding depth here. Just lovely. Thought is 1995. Lucky day

From Krug glass Golden color, few tiny bubbles Oxidative nose, marzipan, lemon curd, huge florality, like burying your nose in a flower and brioche. On the palate still very alive, huge acidity still present and primary flavors are flowers and brioche. Stylistically I'd like this about 5 years younger, but still very enjoyable at this age, and many will in fact prefer it if you like some oxidation on your champs.

This is definitely a wine for those who love aged champagne - all oxidized honey and caramel, bruised apples, lengthy finish. Bubbles are pretty well gone, just a faint effervescence. Wine of the night for many, and first time tasting old champagne for quite a few. A treat to try this!

Celebrating 60 (The NoMad): WOTN for many people. This was just drinking perfectly. In that spot between having the age and the complexity that comes from that and more caramel and slightly toasty flavors to also still having all of the vibrancy. Love this wine.

Was quite excited to taste this when offered, but was slightly let down. I felt it was lacking notes fruit, which I guess was expected, but it was as if nothing had replaced them - none of the beautiful tertiary notes of coffee, toffey, nuts etc. that I was expecting. I'm not sure I enjoy aged champagne as much as I thought I would - or maybe this bottle just was not prestine.

Wine Tasting Group - Champagne, sorta - Nov. 9, 2019 (Brian's place): Light pale yellow color. Yeasty, brioche aromas with some nuts, and mix of fresh and baked apples. Palate tastes both fresh and old with excellent acids that co-mingle with a mild nutty aged oxidative notes. Yeasty, brioche flavors with fresh and baked apples, herbs, minerals, and a bit bitter grapefruit pith. Lovely long, lingering finish. Creamy but lively mouthfeel. Complex showing both young and aged characteristics. Lovely and WOTN for me. 93+.

Even better than the last bottle of this, the 85 Dom shows lots of lush, fresh fruit with lively citrus notes but also button mushrooms, cream, and mineral. Very little mousse left, this has more of a pleasant effervescence.

Most amazing '85 Dom experience to date. Moderately chilled, and pour to golden straw hew. Nose of butterscotch, dark chocolate covered caramel, creme brulee, vanilla bean and honey with sea side mist and feint whiff of maderization, which immediately dissipated after 3 minutes in the glass. Fine pearl bead stream, remarkably fresh, bright white fruits and prefect acidic balance with nice length. Sublime, spectacular bottle. No hurry to enjoy well kept bottles - 96+

Peter's Birthday Dinner (Imperial Treasure Shanghai, Ngee Ann City, Singapore): A lovely drop, drinking wonderfully well at this point of its evolution. It had a such a generous, nicely rounded bouquet, with mature notes of honey and red apples alongside an savoury oxidative edge of earth and chicken essence, and then a lift pf dried flowers - almost chamomile-like there. Lots of depth and complexity on that nose. The palate showed off all the pleasing aspects of the 1985 vintages - it was rich, ripe, and warmly generous, with a full, almost powerful expression of red apples, honey and flowers. Not the most complex of Dom Perignons at its age, but this had such warmth and fullness, with a wonderful depth of mouth-filling flavour, and incredible length on its honeyed finish. While the fizz had died down by this point, there was still enough acidity to keep this nicely balanced too. A lovely champagne, drinking quite at peak.

Tasting this Champagne with is lovely and fragrance acidity I thought it was a Krug. Although there was a certain age in this wine the balance was superb and as elegant as its mousse. Not to forget its golden colour, the wine was super 'Champagne' and the aftertaste was equal super refined.

Had side by side with Charles Heidsieck BdM 85. Visually a lot older - the Heidsieck 85 was interestingly enough not much darker then the 04 vintage served just before it. The Dom however had an almost fox like colour showing its development. The nose was soaring delivering a hefty amount of white pepper, roasted nuts and minerality. The palate was imperious and had an intensity that made the Heidsieck next to it pale. On the oxidative spectrum yes, but walking the line perfectly for this not to be overbearing - lovely toffee, coffee aromas interwoven. I was drawing similarities to the Dom 82 that I had two years back. An awesome bottle of champagne and its sheer intensity meant that I was impossible to overbear it with either the scollops or the monkfish served alongside. The Heidsieck on the other hand - which was also marvellous - but maybe not quite in its sweet spot yet - was softer spoken and it took focus to unfurl its beauty. From experience I find good Dom just ages exceptionally well. I find it acceptable drinking at ~10-15 years of age which reaches true love when it is ~30-35 years of age. This was again confirmed here where the Dom 06 was a nice glass of champagne but simply nothing compared to its 21 year older sibling. As for the 85 drink now as in its sweet spot.

This experience defined vintage champagne for me. From the leaflet in the coffret: the vintage was characterized by balance and intensity of aroma, and I must agree. Ripening and harvest experienced ideal climactic conditions, resulting in exceptional quality. However, harsh frost in winter and spring destroyed several thousand hectares, while subsequent gloomy weather delayed flowering, though it finished rapidly with finer weather in the end. 60% Chardonnay, the grapes were subtle with persistent aroma. The Pinot Noirs were full and soft. How remarkable it was to discover this champagne (first prestige cuvée - of all Champagne houses) 64 years after M&C introduced the 1921 vintage in '36, and with this particular vintage, the 1985, completely owning its 33 years of age. To be seen if today’s worldwide brand under the LVMH magistrate is creating comparable longevity, especially as Chef de Cave Geoffroy is now officially retired since 1 Jan 2019…to be seen if today’s consumer even has the patience! My 36y/o palette: Prior to this, Krug defined vintage. I love Bollinger. I’ve had Cristal, though always young. I’ve been privileged to enjoy 1982 Krug on several occasions, all memorable. The ’95 Blanc des Millénaires is exquisite. 1970 Salon impeccable, though I remember the occasion more than the bubbles. 2000 Heidsieck brilliant. So what sets this 1985 DP apart? Was it the fact that I had to use a corkscrew on a bottle of Champagne? Perhaps! A unique richness and depth of color coupled with crystal clarity I’d never seen in a Champagne. An intoxicating nose that wafted across the room upon decant. Fine bubbles that made their way up the column of liquid gold with the knowing movement of a Spartan’s spear. I desire earth and frangipane, toasted brioche, a touch of dust, with complimentary acacia, island citrus fruits, white flowers and a completely round mouthfeel that lingers, and lingers, and lingers with the lightest pétillant left on your tongue. I can’t recite 20 notes across the bouquet and degustation like a pro (nor can I identify them), but I did find the tremendous balance and delivery of seemingly opposing sensory inputs that tend to define premium wine: baked apple, foie gras, tobacco, butterscotch, flint, candied lemon, and maybe a citrus oil like that of grapefruit. Had I not known what to look for, this ’85 DP would have cast an AC-130’s spot light on the yellow brick road and introduced my mind-mouth synapses to a whole new vocabulary. I can’t but hope my remaining bottles are up to task, and I can’t but pity those who’ve already opened theirs. Today’s marketeurs are driving the consumer to understand Champagne more like white Burgundy. On the one hand I can appreciate the brilliance of this conceptually - it’s more than a party drink, the terroir is nuanced, yes you avoid the flute, etc. But on the other hand, for me, there is something about excellent champagne that will always set it apart from excellent chardonnay. Thanks to this bottle, my standard has bumped up several notches, and unfortunately, I am now forever in pursuit of my next 1985 Dom Perignon experience…

Tasted blind, this wine had a medium yellow center and clear rims. The effervescence was mellowing but still noteworthy. The medium intensity nose was quite ripe and showed apples, vanilla, and citrus.
This wine was a bit watery at fist but as it aired it developed an attractive limestone flavor that further enhanced its complexity. It tasted light but had a lovely finish.
This is an excellent Champagne. I doubt this will improve with age so I recommend looking for reasons to pop the cork.

I have had a series of bad wines. Ok not bad per se, but wines that I have waited too long to pop. I was worried about this wine. Why? Well, I bought this online a decade ago and was not quite sure of the provenance. As I started to turn the cork, I became even more stressed-the cork spun far to easily. As I worked it out of the bottle, however, there was a touch of push back–pressure. A great sign! The cork finally came out with a heavy sigh and a bit of “magic smoke” that assuaged just about every fear I had. On the nose? Wholly crapola. Sherried nose, but in the sense of the best possible sherry you could have. On the palate? Nothing short of ethereal. Rich, full, a buttered croissant with a heavy dose of heated caramel. Whoa. In spades. Outstanding Plus. thedrunkencyclist.com

From magnum. A little dusty and musty on the nose at the open. Smells older than the 85 Krug in the next glass. After 20 minutes the funky is blowing off and the wine is developing. Classic DP flavors - showing younger the longer its open. 3 hours in getting a lot of carmel and butterscotch but still light and weightless.

Came across a touch advanced at first, but I felt this freshened up with some air. The flavours are quite tertiary with lots of bready, mushroom, vanilla cream, and nutty notes framing the baked pear and orange peel notes on the palate.

24-Hour Tampa Blitzkrieg; 2/27/2016-2/28/2016: Great sulphur, classic Dom brioche, pretzel, and bready notes. Showing lovely age but with loads of starfruit and strawberry providing energy and power. Chalky texture. Vanilla and toasty oats. Recently Disgorged, consensus was early '90s before the Oenotheque program took off. (95-96).

Great bottle of champagne, just what I want: nice aged butterscotch notes, toast, but the primary apple, floral, and lemon flavors were still detectable, along with a good backbone of acidity. I'd guess a well stored bottle has another decade on it at least.

Clearly a well stored bottle. Colour was pale gold and the mousse still relatively lively. Drunk across 4 hours (starters and desserts), the wine was pretty kaleidoscopic. Only medium weight but still intense with a profile of slightly honeyed apple and lemon peel complemented by notes of toast, brioche, nuts and nougat. Rich but lovely and fresh, it was hard not to admire this wine. The wine should last 10-15 years easily but I doubt I will be able to wait that long *****

A real surprise, drinking very well with lots of nuance. Pretty floral components and good Apple fruits with good mineralogy and tension. Very much alive and delicious. Better than the oeno today. Thanks Ann

Holiday Champagne Dinner (Chez Kailin - Northbrook IL): 3rd or 4th time I have tried this in the past 3 or 4 years, and this was by far the best bottle. Fresh and powerful orchard fruit with toasted brioche hints. Rich, powerful, long.

Has some good yellow/golden colour to it, still decent bubbles considering the age of it. Yeasty on the nose with orange/lemon peel. Palate is well developed, mouth filling - sherbert, orange peel, biscuity, creamy, but still a nice acidity holding it all together and lovely length to it. Fabulous wine, the palate is so interesting - love a matured champagne. If you have any of these left I'd be drinking them up now.

Deep golden yellow. Relatively few bubbles. Rich nose w toasted bread, yellow, very ripe apples, some yeast. Full body, plenty of acidity, apple fruit, very mouth-filling. Aftertaste w minerals and toasted bread, but a little shorter than expected. On its way down, so drink up!

I really likes this wine, with its creamy, smooth textures, the prefect amount of aging effervescence and brioche, citrus and stone character. From a perfect bottle bought on release and stored in cold cellar.

30 years of 1985 Bordeaux at The Papies (The Papies, Elizabeth St, London): Two very consistent bottles (we were a bit worried about them to be frank) and a great way to kick off our 1985 Dinner. The colour shows the age, dark, golden but glossy and vibrant. The nose is rich, complex, yeasty, light honey notes. Open and expressive. Similarly the palate carries the same tune and is surprisingly energetic and with great length. Beautifully aged wine for the lovers of mature champagne. Drink now. 94-95

1st Vivino Int'l chapter in Singapore (Sat. afternoon), Part-1 (Bok's place): What a great way to kickoff an afternoon - a mature DP! Honey, brioche on the nose, with much lesser of that oxidative/toasted note. A properly stored bottle (from Bok's cellar no less), it still had very fine bubbles. Very rounded and rich mouthfeel, with notes of apples, nuts, chrysanthemums. Very good! If I had to be picky, the only snag is it didn't have that "palate-staining" feel & intensity that a btl of '90 we had recently exhibited; Otherwise, excellent!

This was a great surprise...our neighbors said "you really like wine and we've had this bottle for awhile would you like to drink it?" low and behold a 1985 dom comes out of the fridge. No idea how it's been stored but turned out to be a really nice bottle. Fully mature, still some sparkler left in bottle. Baked apples, almonds and a touch of mushrooms. Still a touch of acidity made this a great start to the new year.

Old Wine Offline; 9/26/2014-9/27/2014 (The Room Off the Patio at Ruth's Chris, and My House): Limpid yellow-gold in the glass. Honeyed, ripe melon, toasty brioche nose. Elegant on the palate, almost a bit too light, with ample fine bubbles, citrus, mineral, excellent complexity. I liked this bottle, though I believe I would have liked the profile better with a little less or a little more age on it.

Dinner with the Boys (Bistro Pastis): Tasted blind. Brief notes. Intense and weighty on the entry but finishes with great acid and a fresh squirt of citrus. Excellent acidity balanced the richness and intensity perfectly. This bottle seemed more youthful than a previous bottle. Drinking very well now but no rush. Outstanding.

Colore dorato con tendenze ramate. Naso molto complesso ed evoluto, caramello, tofee, brioche, fiori bianchi secchi, mela cotta, torta tatin scorza d'arancia candita e accenni minerali. Al palato dolce, cremoso e strutturato, con un'acidità esile ma ben presente. Finale lungo ed entusiasmante.

The champagne now is showing definite signs of old age, from its deep color, paucity of bubbles and gentle notes of oxidation in the form of liquid rye bread. Yet once past the mild shock and acceptance of age, it's really a very fine drink. As usual, it got better as it warmed up all the way to room air.

Great bottle. Light gold yellow with shimmering shine. Multiple small fine streams of tightly aligned bubbles. Aromas of bread, citrus, and touch of earth. Rich and dense with nice tension. Layers of spices, earthy minerality, and yellow citrus fruits. Wonderful balance and surprisingly long finish. While some mild signs of maturity, well stored bottles still have good life ahead. Very enjoyable. Happy New Year indeed!

MNF Dinner at Tommy's (Vancouver, BC): This was quite a bit better than the '90 it was served with. Candied ginger, coffee and baked apples on the nose with loads of complexity. From magnum. Light gold colour. Pinprick bubbles. Noticeably less developed and sturdier than the regular bottles as one would expect. Gorgeous nose of truffles, oysters and hints of mushrooms. Fantastic match with the cheese gougeres. The 2nd pour was fresher and younger again. I left the rest until the end when it had developed a sweet, black treacle element. Superb showing. Wish I had more!

Dom Perignon @ Medlar: Magnum. So much fresher than from bottle at the Chez Bruce Gevrey bash. Mid gold. Very good stream of fine bubbles. Fine, rich but retaining its elegance. Long. A good depth to the mid-palate. Wonderful, but in hindsight very correct and lacks a slight frisson cf the 80 and 64. Splitting hairs though. *****

Excellent if you appreciate old champagne but if you don't this would seem odd and unappealing. It's burnished copper gold and still has plenty of bubbles. It's redolent of tree bark, woodsmoke, mushroom, molasses and truffle. Lovely texture, beautiful wine.

Dark color as expected, slightly oxidized but still a lovely bottle of bubbly showing its maturity. Good, lively bubbles still. Lots of caramel, sherry-like quality, some toffee, toasty, some brioche. A well-aged but still enjoyable bottle. Drank the Gisondis bottle for Johnny's 18th as the boys leave for college...

Open, complex and woderfully aromatic on the multilayered nose with lively appley fruit and lemon as well as notes of nutty oxidation, varnish, vanilla, meat, burnt sugar, intense mushroom character, clove and cappucino. Medium bodied dry palate with fading moussé and balanced acidity. There's a saline touch and some bitter citrus as well as cappucino, wet earth and shellfish. Long and nuanced. Delivered big time! A clear star among many other prestige 1985's tasted.

we popped this for my husband's bday and had with our meal as we think it'd be an understatement to treat it like an aperitif wine. and we were right..deep gold/amber colour, still holding on to its bubbles, lovely nose with honey, toast, caramel and on the palate a bit sweet at first but quickly balanced by its acidity, long finish although not as long as some other great years. all in all a great wine but drink soon.

Super Tasting 3 of 6 - Dave's Epic Dinner (Kitchener, Ontario): This was so rich....butter, salted caramel, dough, coffee. Palate showed great minerality, citrus, coffee, and hazelnuts with a long and complex finish. This is a drink now as it is just past its peak in my mind

Dave's Super Tasting (3 of 6) (Dave's House): The nose is on this is just massive and centered on freshly ground coffee, toast with touches of salted caramel and toffee. Palate is round with notable dosage, just a bit sweet on the sweet side for me. Fortunately the effervescence is still fully intact and acid still refreshes. I thought this was awesome.

Super Tasting 3 of 6; Dave Does a Mixed Bag (Dave's House): Popped and poured, deep gold in colour, followed for approximately 30 minutes. Fairly advanced, the nose shows fresh ground coffee, caramelized sugar, bruised apple, crushed rocks, earth, yeast, spice and a touch of mushroom. On the palate, round and rich, with notes of baked apple, salted caramel, coffee, mineral and spice that characterize the finish, accented by a nice cut of acidity. Overall quite good, but a touch more advanced than I like my Champagne.

Deep Golden in colour. Nose was quite pretty, caramel, honey, brioche, lemon custard, and toffee and apple. Palate definitely has a burnt sugar note with some definite oxidative notes. The Northern Rhone Dinner (Chave, Jaboulet, Chapoutier, Rostaing, Tardieu Laurent) (Patrick's House): Popped and poured, followed for about an hour. Still quite bubbly, with a nose showing lightly bruised apple, apple skins, lemon zest, mineral, caramelized sugar, toast, and a light mushroom note. On the palate, this is quite lightweight and elegant, showing citrus, mineral and apple. Great acidic spine, and any tannin that may have existed has fully integrated. Finish is slightly longer than moderate, with a nice bitterness lingering on the finish. In an oxidative style, but still very fresh and enjoyable. My only qualm is that I was hoping for a bit more power and complexity here.

Clearly sitting upright on my inlaws bar and under a flickering light for over a decade. This was compeltely oxidized and the corked easily slid right out. The worst part is, my in-laws saw one or two bubbles per glass and insisted it was still good because "it is the most expensive champagne in the world" They made us drink it!

This was an outstanding DP. It had a touch of development that reminded an aged white burgundy but carried a very fresh and concentrated finish. Light yellow to yellow color in the glass, clear looking throughout with tiny, steady beading. Nose of a hint of toast, sea breeze, yellow pears and a touch of hazelnuts. Flavors of sherry, soaked pears, lemon and minerals. Bright acidity, full bodied. Drink or hold.

Amber-coloured, but still vibrant, with plenty of pop in the cork. Kept under imperfect conditions, it still yielded a yeasty, short-bready nose and mouth and settled down into a very quaffable bubbly. Drink up, though, if you have it.

I didn't expect much from this bottle since it had been in our refrigerator at least 8 years in addition to the time the lady we bought our house from had left it in there after receiving it from a VIP. I expected the bubbles to be muted, but it was the taste that ended up being muted. Still, it was delicious, nimble. and a real treat. Dom...takes a licking and still is ticking.

An evening of Doms (Uncle John's): Nicely aged Dom, light to medium golden in color, yeasty nose, with a rich and full palate full of fruit and substance that is not over the top like Salon or Krug. Rich but with lots of layers, very enjoyable and still got lots of life ahead.

Disappointed. We have had this bottle in the fridge for a couple of years waiting for the right moment to share it. This New Year's eve seemed the time with family and friends available to share the experience of a fine champagne. When we peeled back the foil and removed the wire guard, the cork meekly surrendered with no pop. The champagne inside was mostly flat and overly sweet. I suspect the cork was faulty. So much for our first bottle of Dom.

Consistently one of the best Champagnes currently: quasi perfect balance between acidity, freshness, fruit, and creaminess. The only thing it lacks for me is a buttery Chardonnay flavour that is only really possible to obtain with single parcel wines.

Sampled 10/17/10 in MAGNUM. Still a strong bead. The color has turned golden. A little hazelnut, dried orange peel, some dried lemon peel, perfect sugar and acid balance, some caramel, wonderful length. This well stored magnum had at least another 3 to 5 years in it.

My first aged Champagne, and it was everything I had hoped it would be. Richly golden hue, with an almost non-existent mousse, this captivating wine opens with rich, supple aromas of caramel, lemon curd, toasted hazelnut, followed by hints of ginger. The palate is elegantly rich and silken with a soft but persistent backbone of acidity and a decidedly firm minerality and a faint earth quality. Beautifully decadent and elegant. I can't wait to have another.

Clearly enjoyed much more by me than any of the guests at Custom House Tavern to begin BWE Chicago 2010. Much more complex and developed than previous bottles. A strong, but evanescent note of white truffle was especially intriguing. We drank this as an aperitif, but it would have a perfect match with the quail with ravioli first course.

Haven't had many DP but this one was really special. Wonderfull nose of bread, toffee and nuts. Very golden, almost Rose in color. Very little mousse, but there through the meal. ( Bought on auction so don't know the storage conditions ) Freshly made sushi and a Thai meal with lots of spices and chily. Amazing how the wine tasted great through this spicy meal. Could easily have been drunk with a steak as well. This one definately makes me look for more DP for the cellar. Just younger ones...

Doubled-down on a few cases at a recent Zachy's auction and this was my first time tasting the wine. Actually had a young nose of flowers and citrus. The palate started with some oysters and citrus and then the aged flavors of cocoa, caramel and toasted nuts appeared. Not as much oxidation as the '71's I had earlier this year, in fact just the right amount. Nice acidity and long finish. Looking forward to drinking these bottles.

Recent auction buy of three of mixed provenance. Lovely soft, full mousse on pouring, light to mid gold. Just stewed apples and vanilla on the nose. Attack is let down by a salty oxidative tang, but follows into doughnuts and a beautifully precise mineral and whipped cream before the tang comes back. This bottle still shows promise but I suspect that tang would develop into something less enjoyable. I really don't get on with young DP but after 20 years, the magic happens.

Only slightly more developed colour than the 96! However, much more open, oxidised nose of toast, brioche, oyster shell and honey. Gorgeous sweet/smooth palate of honey and brioche. Not quite as harmonious overall as the 96 and faded in the glass over 2 hours but superb when it was on.

For the first half hour, this seemed to be extremely stern and severe, especially when compared to the richer '85 Krug we drank along with it. But finally, just as the bottle was almost finished and the wine warmed up to nearly room temperature, the breed, complexity, delicacy and elegance of a mature DP began to shine. More about minerals and acids than fruit, but there's a kernel of green apple that's compelling.

Consumed at Paustian v. Bo Bech as a wedding day celebration. Enjoyed over 2-3 hours. Toasted butter, wallnuts, sweet red apples and mushrooms. A very complex wine. Still has a descent amount of acidity. Small and elegant bubbles. An amazing wine and a pleasure to enjoy.

Golden hue. Very nice acidity and long finish. Lots of life left here. Besides the hints of citrus, less about fruit than mushroom, toasted nuts, , etc. Interesting for my first foray into aged bubbly. I would have liked to have seen more yeasty, doughy notes and more fruit--but I guess that goes with the territory here. There is also somewhat of a slightly oxidized or sherried note that may or may not be typical of older champagne. I personally did not care for that element.

This is a really winey champagne, more about the wine than the bubbles, although bubbles there are aplenty, small although not pinpoint. It may have been the Riedel Sommelier sauternes glass I decided to try, but the champagne seemed beautifully expressive, mature but lively (K guessed it was a '96 or '98 even though she knew it was a DP). There were layers of flavor that developed as it warmed, like any fine white wine. Medium body, liquid bread but not at all yeasty, rich but firm from good acidity, masculine but not beer-y. Finally mature, but no rush.

(Barry's bottle, at Marks LO) This is definitely the best DP for drinking now. Vigorous mousse, but not gassy. Wonderfully elegant and focused, but the PN shows in the firmness on the palate. Classic profile of wheat thins and citrus. Not really distinctive or unusual yet deeply satisfying. Finally mature, but clearly has years to go. Can be drunk as an aperitive as we did, or paired with lighter food.

Domathon: Youthful appearance and in fact it was a lighter colour than the 1990. A great nose of citrus peel, apple pie/freshly baked pastry, vanilla and honey. Absolutely lovely champagne in its prime. Gentle yet persistent mousse that forms a couronne in my glass. DP in 1985 is a middleweight, not big and muscular but not delicate and filigree either. Pleasant aroma of considerable complexity including wheat thins, but otherwise difficult to characterize. Excellent depth and the finish is long and lingering. This is the perfect age to drink this wine for my taste.

"Very Special" Dinner at Picholine OL (Picholine Wine Room, NYC): A beautiful, elegant, and lively champagne. Pleasant pear on the nose, with a touch of brioche. On the palate, there's a notable citrus note - ultimately key lime is what I came to as the best descriptor - fairly sharp note with a bit of an acidic component. Lovely champagne. Very dry, a touch of toastiness. Solidly in the prime of its drinking window.

Greg brought this wine to the Four Seasons to start our '82 Bordeaux dinner. It was my favorite DP at this years' vertical of The Great Wine Seminar, but that was out of a magnum. I'm pleased to note that it was simply wonderful in the standard format as well. Right in that mature phase where the agression and acidity have been toned down and all the elements are totally integrated. Really elegant; soft but not weak; warm, inviting finish. Delightful right now. I'm more impressed at this time with the '85 than the '90, either standard or Oenotheque.

Toasty, soft, rich and not terribly fruity...I like DP and older vintages, but this would not be a bottle that I would chase as it may have started the decline, virtually no fruit, but plenty ofother flavors and a yeasty toasty note that I always like a bunch...

This wine evolved tremendously over the course of the evening. At first there is some kind of Dom Perignon signature, it is unmistakably a DP, with typical finesse and elegance (especially very fine bubbles). Paired with veal/cream/morilles it revealed itself, developing nutty aromas and then toasty notes. In the end (after a couple of hours) other characteristics appeared with strong torrefacted notes. The nose was a real beauty, the palate was superb with all the time this particular elegance, but the most impressive for me was the finish. A great champagne experience.

Light yellow in the glass. Toast bread on the nose. A superb taste of Grand Cru Kool Aid if that were possible. Quite something. Like a fantastic popcicle. With air the wine gained tremendously in strength, though the aftertaste could have been a hair longer.

a very memorable bottle. lots of yeast and walnuts as everyone knows. lovely small bead bubbles remain active through 30 minutes of tasting. the finish is mouth filling and unending. from more recent reviews, i admire the wine's longevity but feel that i am pleased to have enjoyed it in its youth.

Interesting. Powerful driving mousse. Fairly open and advanced on the nose but tightened up with air. Yeasty and intense. The Chardonnay shows more than the Pinot Noir. Bracing acidity. Needs 2 more years to settle down.

Simply splendid. More advanced and harmonious than ‘82 Krug today. Full but not too big. Smelled just like the heavy wheat bread I ate with it. Long and satisfying. Well integrated acidity. Classic great champagne.

Finishes long with notes of dried apricots, marmalade, burnt sugar and decaying lemon peel.

Golden color, few tiny bubbles
Oxidative nose, marzipan, lemon curd, huge florality, like burying your nose in a flower and brioche.
On the palate still very alive, huge acidity still present and primary flavors are flowers and brioche.
Stylistically I'd like this about 5 years younger, but still very enjoyable at this age, and many will in fact prefer it if you like some oxidation on your champs.

Had it on a Thursday with my wife and buddy with a snack lunch. So cool, so delicious, still has fizz and great acid although I was warned on purchase that about half of the bottles lack fizz. Oldest Dom I’ve had, and the price merits the experience. Thanks to R.Nellans for the encouragement to explore older DP. Purchased from Belmont Wines.

Tertiary flavors evolving. Bread and wheat hints. Saline and mineral. Fruits are still subtly present such a apple and pear. Very good acidity and grip.
The wine looks yellow gold colored. The legs are medium. There is no sediment in the bottle. It smells like apple, pear and walnut. It tastes like lemon, apple, pear and bready. The body is medium. The wine has linear texture. The wine finishes long. The wine has high acidity.

An astonishingly young showing compared any of the numerous experiences I've had of the 85 over the last decade. Pale gold colour. All in all, quite a bit less developed than the 95! Fresh, crisp on the palate with only hints of ageing. Remarkable provenance for this bottle.

Consistent with past bottles. Reductive. Very ripe yellow apple on the palate. Smoky and savoury. Salted caramel. Good as ever.

Excellent if you appreciate old champagne but if you don't this would seem odd and unappealing. It's burnished copper gold and still has plenty of bubbles. It's redolent of tree bark, woodsmoke, mushroom, molasses and truffle. Lovely texture, beautiful wine.

When we peeled back the foil and removed the wire guard, the cork meekly surrendered with no pop. The champagne inside was mostly flat and overly sweet. I suspect the cork was faulty. So much for our first bottle of Dom.

But finally, just as the bottle was almost finished and the wine warmed up to nearly room temperature, the breed, complexity, delicacy and elegance of a mature DP began to shine. More about minerals and acids than fruit, but there's a kernel of green apple that's compelling.

While obviously very, very good, this time I was not thrilled. It's all about the impeccable balance and elegance, which is there to be sure, but I was hoping for more flavor authority and intensity.

The nose is very intense and packed with mushrooms and sweet red apples. The taste is simply amazing for such an old champagne. Red apples, yeast, mushrooms and still a very fresh acidity. Has some ripe tones of sweetness but it is simply amazing. Tiny and elegant bubbles.
What a great pleasure to try this amazing wine!!

LIghter and crisper than the 1982 - still wonderfully balanced and complex.

Outstanding. Beautiful Golden Color with a nice mousse. Nose of honey, nuts and fig. Quite dry with a wonderful finish. This wine has held up rather well.

This wine is simply amazing! The fresh bread and bright citrus notes are remarkable. This bottle was as lively, if not more so, than the current releases. Wonderful!

This champagne was as fresh as a daisy. Incredible nose of fresh baked bread. Silky rich and creamy smooth mousse in the mouth and the bread component coming through as well.

Wonderfully balanced mature but still vigorous champagne. Medium body at most, not very scented but mouth filling and elegant. More about citrus than toast, but there are layers of flavor to be discovered. DP takes a very long time to develop.

Ripe citrus and apricot fruit notes. Liqueur-like texture to the palate, with a resolved mousse but none of the coffee/chocolate overtones I usually get with older Dom. Can certainly still last. Enjoyable wine.

Domathon: Youthful appearance and in fact it was a lighter colour than the 1990. A great nose of citrus peel, apple pie/freshly baked pastry, vanilla and honey. The palate is delicious, with elegant flavours and really clean, fresh acid carrying the wine to a long finish. A top class wine that will continue improving in bottle.

Slightly yeasty nose, lovely, fine mousse. Surprisingly fresh on the palate with bright notes of lime. Good acid, and a finish that was reasonably long. A great wine with creme fraiche and caviar 'cones'.

Interesting. Powerful driving mousse. Fairly open and advanced on the nose but tightened up with air. Yeasty and intense. The Chardonnay shows more than the Pinot Noir. Bracing acidity. Needs 2 more years to settle down.

Simply splendid. More advanced and harmonious than ‘82 Krug today. Full but not too big. Smelled just like the heavy wheat bread I ate with it. Long and satisfying. Well integrated acidity. Classic great champagne.
