Superb wine and still fairly spry for 20 years old. In a good window.
Decanted and watched it evolve over a couple hours but it was singing after the initial pop. Intense but classic nose of cherry liqueur, dried tomato, leather, herbs de Provence, flint and subtle tertiary wafts of undergrowth and moss. Expressive and just lovely definition of its character.
Palate was soft but pleasingly weighty, with light to moderate tannin and a juicy acidity, even with its age. Excellent balance.

Medium ruby with a tiny garnet rim. Medium plus black fruit and fresh tilled earth on the nose. Pronounced spice and black damp earth on the palate. Full body with medium plus acidity. Velvet tannins and well integrated alcohol. A palate of dark fruit and spice with a minty freshness that keeps this wine interesting. Outstanding wine making. This shows it's incredible pedigree. Enjoyed with grilled quail and artichokes. Won't improve but will keep for much longer i think.

Still quite rich but showing its age now. There is a fair amount of nice leather and layers of flavour here backed by fruit which though still quite full and rich is drying on the finish. Medium to full bodied, tannins softening but still providing grip, as does the good acidity. Long and complex. Drinking now, will become increasing tertiary.

My last bottle of six purchased. Great nose - extremely perfumed and with some added funk (which I love). JMOORE431 mentioned in the review that "everyone thought it was Bordeaux" and I can see why. I felt like the wine fell short of expectations once I started drinking it. Highly enjoyable but not memorable. Fully mature.

Served this blind at “Anything but burgundy” tasting, everyone thought it was Bordeaux. It certainly smelled and tasted like it. Decent quality but hardly worth the price.

Dark red in color. 13.5% ABV. Mostly Sangioviese with some Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Stunning nose of red fruits, leather, wet asphalt and flowers. Medium body with perfect acidity. Powerful, concentrated and rather silky. Black cherry, tobacco, licorice and earth on the palate. Exceptional length on the finish. Young, fresh, vibrant and aging brilliantly. I’ll open my last bottle at 25 years from vintage in 2029.

Just like bottles over the past 2-3 years. Classic and drinking well. Earlier bottles were decanted for about 2 hours. This one was opened for 2 hours with no decant. I could not detect a difference in the drinking experience.

Popped and poured last nite with the Professor. Started off nicely, but faded in the glass fairly rapidly. Plenty of funk on the nose, along with some mushrooms. Some red fruit on the palate at first, but that was overtaken by notes of earth, mushrooms and somewhat pruny fruit. I have to say I didn't hate the wine, but I was a bit disappointed. Bad bottle? Perhaps, but seemed this wine was past its peak.

Drank with Eric H at Olivier Elzer's new restaurant, Clarence. 3rd of a case bought on release and kept until I could drink it contemplatively with a friend who would really appreciate it. 1-hour decant. Deep semi opaque lambs blood colour. Nose is OMFG smoky deep, dusky perfume. Confit blackcurrant pastilles. Palate is almost velvet-smooth but still very strong bitter nuts element but not unpleasant and still a firm tannic frame but well integrated. Sultry and beguiling. Really lovely. Huge perfume inside the head on the finale. Very resonant in the central cortex. Takes you into silence creating territory. This has years ahead of it but is so beguiling now. Have moved the drink-by to 2030. Wow! 96 easy.

Powerful nose. Lots of funk, minerals with some cherry fruit. Beautiful mouth feel, very silky. Nice balance. Perhaps a touch austere. Just enough fruit peaking thru though mostly cherry. Seems to be at peak maybe slightly past. But still delicious Drink up.

RF supplied for OTB nite with the WWS crew last nite. Lovely bottle showing well currently. Expressive nose of coffee, tobacco and forest floor. Earthy, with some black pepper and forest floor on the medium palate. Black cherry fruit, hint of chocolate and good acidity level. Overall, a well-balanced wine drinking very nicely right now. Happy to discover I have a few bottles in my cellar.

Perfectly mature, if not at its very peak. Generous nose, with fresh black fruit, plum and delicate wood. Dense in the mouth, built on ripe fruit, cedar, vanilla, against a background of garrigue, tea, graphite and ink. Complex and fully developed, so enjoy now over the coming 2-3 years max.

for anyone who likes their reds very very robust the score might be one to two pts higher, I like old 'faded blue jeans' cabs and so this was a little too in my face for my taste... felt like it was going strong tho so depending on your tastes I wouldn't hesitate to keep this another ten years (or more)... pretty good cab and Sangiovese typicity but just blocked a bit by the bazooka palate

Rich and structured. Good black fruit, not fading. Structure still robust, with mellowing tannins which still provide plenty of grip. Tertiary leather, cedar and underbrush. As this has aged it has lost its youthful freshness and precision and has become more blurred and slightly tired. Still a very nice wine but past its peak based on this bottle (I see my notes on an earlier bottle reflect a fresher wine - perhaps better stored). Long and complex. Drink now but no need to rush.

From Pnp a very Bordeaux-ish nose. Ripe black currant, blackberries and oak. After one hour the oak integrated and the palate where very inviting with black fruit, black currant and blackberries in several layers. Some herbal notes toward the end. Fine complexity. Drink very nicely now but also appears surprisingly vital and can for sure rest maybe even another 10 years in the cellar. 92-94+ P

Red Wines + Cigar (NiQ's House, Hong Kong): My 2nd of a case bought at the vineyard on release in 2007. Decanted for 5 hours but still needed 2 hours in the glass to fully open. Translucent ruby with a strong opaque core. Nose is a lovely immediate blast of coal tar, nicely burnt oak, deep black fruits in the background. Palate is immediately welcoming with a superb tension between fresh medium acidity, lovely secondary blackberry and black currant fruit and mid-life tannin structure. More richness with time in the glass and impressive resonance and length on the finish. The last swallow was the best.... perfect early full drinking window for me. I'm pleased I have kept my hands off this since first opening a bottle in 2015.
To put it in context, all of us preferred this to a Ch. Mouton Rothschild 1995 we drank beforehand even though we are all 'older Bordeaux' afficionados.

started muted; after 30+ minutes, it opened and opened and really hit its stride. A pretty cherry perfume; some hints of licorice and earth; a bit of heat; mouthful is bright red fruit; some cherry and raspberry; some cinnamon; some black licorice/anise; tannic grippy finish that is better with food. I'd guess this isnt going to get better so drink up. I enjoyed this.

well, 91 for me but I suspect others would provide a higher number, I like my wines elegant rather than super bold, and this was the later, very well made, but for me it suffered only due to the year (2004 in Italy) plus being half (?) cabernet so more bold due to varietal... couldn't find a fault per se but just a little hot and punchy for me to fully enjoy... if you like 'em that way you will love this bottling... for me I heading to burgundy, or if cab (or even nebiollo) I like at least 20-30 years of age... this guy seems only in adolescence right now

Color: deep ruby Nose: licorice plum and cherry Taste: licorice, forest floor, cherry , plum, Italian spice and leather.
The first sip tells all - simply delicious. Tig was my first super Tuscan and will always be a treat. Fruit upfront followed by a secondary flavor of a touch of cough syrup, cedar, Italian spice all blended in a silky, lingering finish. Still fresh tasting - drink now or hold.

delicious. pnp and drunk over 2 hours. nice brighter red fruit; some asian spices. good acidity. fruit forward but not over the top in any way; quite smooth and medium bodied. def not Bordeaux to me but also not as over the top fruit bomb as a CA cab. But given the pleasant bright fruit of this was what defined it for me, i would lean towards drinking it sooner before that fruit fades.

What a pleasant surprise, hiding in my cellar - I thought my supply had been consumed over a year go but voilá, there it was at the bottom of a neglected wine box! Not being one to turn down a gift from the Gods, I decanted this for 3h and enjoyed with a grilled chicken dinner. Soft aromas of oak, tobacco, baking spices, maybe black pepper. On the palate we have a balance of velvety red and black fruit, more oak/tobacco, mineral, graphite, and spices on the finish. The underpinning acid, almost subliminal, reminds you that this from Italy, not CA. Not much in the way of tannins, they have integrated and receded to the edges of the mouth if you are looking for them. Excellent, so glad I discovered this in the basement.

Hmm this is perfect today - a proper Wow! Gorgeous. Big rich fruit, all fruitcake, leather and blackberry. The structure is great as well and ably supports the generous fruit, tannin still has a zing and the acidity provides enough freshness so that this is nowhere near "gloopy". Classic Tuscan Chianti but very fine. Complex and long. It is a point now but will plateau for a good few years to come.
Continues to drink well. Decanted for an hour and a half. This one has some life left in it, but I am going to drink up over the next couple of years to insure I do not miss enjoying my last 3 bottles.

Mature and I think it is at its peak: mostly secondary and tertiary aromas and flavors that are powerful and pronounced. Just a hint of fruit present. Pleasant mouthfeel with good structure and pleasant integration of tannins, acidity and alcohol. Pleasant, if slightly shorter than expected finish. I would drink up now and over the next year or two at most.

Excellent.

My last bottle and the best I have had. Perhaps opened the others too young. PnP. In a really great place. Had along with '04 Ch.Monbousquet and Ch. Leoville Las Cases and this was the undisputed WOTN. Agree with others; reminiscent of Pauillac. Nothing could have gone better with the seared venison and roasted squab stuffed with foie gras.

With Tony and Jojo at Birk's Steakhouse. Opened to breathe for 2h before dinner, huge nose, 1' from the glass, red fruit, leather, tobacco. On the palate bright cherry - impressive fruit, given its age - balanced with warm earthy notes and a long finish. Outstanding paired with smoked prime rib.
This was sampled back to back with an '09 ornellaia, which was outstanding as well, but had slightly more shock and awe. But this '04 Tignanello also showed extremely well. I don't believe it is on the decline, yet, all it needs is some time to breathe. 94/95

Marvelous, totally open for business. Pretty inexperienced with aged Supertuscans, so never would have guessed its provenance blind. Would have said Pauillac. This is all mature dark fruit, leather, cigar box. Powerful and layered. Slow ox for an hour, that was plenty. Drank over two hours.

Tasted from a Zalto Universal glass, this is exactly where I want my wines to be. There's a bit of bricking to the color indicating the 15 years since the vintage. Scents of earth, tobacco with a light smokiness, dried blackberries, with a hint of all-spice. On the palate, there are blackberries, raspberries, cherry, olive tapenade, and clove. This is just plain awesome, and I certainly wish I had more left. If I had some in the cellar; I would check in on them immediately. This is just so lovely, the tannins have resolved some yet still proved a lovely structure for the wine. I have to say, I have not understood the hype of Big from my past experiences; but this wine...it's just plain brilliant. Outstanding!!!!

Decanted tableside at restaurant. Moderate sediment. Nice bouquet of tart cherries, mushrooms and the earth. Evolved throughout the night. Sour cherries and a mix of red fruits, showing showing secondaries. Good acidity as expected. Tannins notable and gave good structure. No flaws, held up to the food tonight. In a good place, our wine of the night in a lineup with a 2007 Silver Oak Alexander Valley and a 2004 Felesina Chianti riserva.

Beautiful aromas, deep rich flavors, and soft tannins with just enough bite left to suggest this can go a few more years in your cellar. We found the nose to be much more expressive on pop-and-pour, than after a brief decant. We certainly enjoyed this, but having recently purchased this from WineBid, we did not feel it was a great QPR.
Smooth and robust with leather, chocolate, citrus and sweet dark cherry aromas lingering over the top of this. Long balanced finish. Nothing stands out here seamless, velvety and elegant. Drink now-2024.

Youthful, dense and very deep dark cherry color with fully opaque core that turns slightly translucent toward the rim. The nose feels ripe, sweet-toned and beautifully fragrant, yet not excessively fruit-driven with rich aromas of black cherries, some sweeter blackcurrant tones, a little bit of dusty oak spice, light woody tones, a hint of licorice and a touch of alcohol. The wine is dense, full-bodied and quite concentrated on the palate with still - at 14 years of age - relatively youthful flavors of juicy cherries and plummy dark fruits, some sweet-toned oak spice, a little bit of ripe blackcurrant, light peppery tones, a hint of chocolatey oak and a touch of savory wood character. The wine feels still quite structured and muscular with the moderately high acidity and quite grippy firm tannins. The finish is somewhat grippy and rather tighly-knit with flavors of plummy dark fruits, some ripe blacckurrant tones, a little bit of toasty oak spice, light bittersweet notes of dark chocolate, a hint of stony minerality and a touch of mocha oak.
A rather muscular and quite modern powerhouse of a Tuscan wine that feels a bit too ripe and oak-driven for my taste. The overall style here is still so youthful for the age the wine seems almost backward, but that also translates to quite dominant and unintegrated oak character. The base wine is very balanced and the Cab component shows nicely alongside the more cherry-driven Sangiovese tones, but the overall feel is a bit too Parkerized with the ripe, sweet-toned fruit and quite liberal oak use. I feel this wine doesn't show the finesse some of the more recent vintages have shown nor does it show the level of integration and complexity of the older vintages. Perhaps another 10 or so years might make the wine feel more harmonious - at least it shows good potential for future development.

Brunello's and Super Tuscans (Luci Ancora): There was some nice complexity here. Some secondary Bordeaux characteristics. I am usually wrong about these things, but I don't sense this wine improving from this point. It seemed slightly fragile already.

I was looking forward to trying this wine with some btl age on it but at age 12/13 you have to wonder if the fruit will be there when the structure and oak finally resolves. Modern in style. Dark barrique aged purple color. Not in my wheelhouse so take this note with a grain of salt. I'm posting it here to remind myself not to be tempted to buy any.

Fantastic Tignanello. Powerful complex nose of classy smoke and elegant red ripe fruit melt with exotic spices, consistent palate of ripe plums and refined elegant oak, where "balance" is the name of the game. Never overwhelming, never short. Really great and in its best drinking window but able to remain at its best for two - four of years at least. Only one note : scents and taste slightly fade over time after 2/3hrs

Nose of sweet tobacco leaf, dark berry. Slightly woody and a faint note of cigarette butt. Some hidden red meat here. Palate of dark fruit and tobacco leaf. Slightly stewed. Quite lush initially but the finish is dry and slightly bitter. Could be heat damaged. Tannins are rather resolved but if this is not damaged, one wonders if this is built to last.

Tignanello Tasting dinner with Renzo Cotarella (La Pizza Fresca Ristorante, NYC): The '04 is the winemaker's favorite vintage. I thought it was quite delicious, but actually preferred the 90's vintages tonight as they just seemed to be more mature. I think this will cellar for quite a long time, though you would not be disappointed to drink this now. Sorry late in the lineup and notes are getting more sparse.

Tig is one of my historical favorites from Italy, and we opened up a 2004 for a big birthday celebration. Slow-ox for 4 hours. Initially quite reserved with nervous acidity. Seemed to calm down a bit, especially with food. Dark fruit, subtle spice, and some earthiness with a nice finish, this Tig showed well but not as well as previous vintages.

I was impressed with how this wine has aged! It was still full bore Super Tuscan in every sense of the word. Sultry blackberry, wood smoke, tar, crushed granite, blue flowers all mingle together nicely on the nose and are echoed on the palate. The tannins were still hanging in there enough to carry the flavors to a 45 second finish

This continues to be a really great wine and I was surprised it was drinking so well now, right from the first to last glass. The rich colour doesn't lie. This is what the super Tuscans do so well. Complexity and warmth all wrapped around a strong fruit structure. Tried along side LYnch bages 95. Table was split but I preferred this (and I brought the LB!). A case wine on the HG scale

Drinking mostly wines from Piedmonte and Umbria recently I lost track how truly great a Super Tuscan can be. The round texture, and full body of this wine clearly challenges the French. The strong cherry with a hint of spice flavors made any food pairing buckle at the knees.

Finally a Tignanello that lives up to its fame! I've had some amazing '97 and '99 but after that was disappointed with most vintages I had. This bottle was a special one:
Ruby colour, no sign of amber or brick yet. Vibrant aromas of blackcurrant, berries and some boxwood evolving with eucalyptus and indian spices. Full bodied on the palate with smooth, mouth coating, tannins and balanced acidity. A very long and evolving finish that remains fresh throughout. Probably some evolvement ahead but super seductive right now, I would say: drink now!
The wine was popped an poured and consumed over about 2 hours. It was almost immediately open for business.

Colour turning rusty, especially at the rim. Very smooth: high acidity, medium tannins, medium to high alcohol, long length. Blackberries, currants, cooked red fruit. Menthol and red pepper, liqorice and tobacco. Will hopefully develop in the coming 5 years.

If served blind, I would have confused this for a Bordeaux. Great nose of tobacco, cedar, eucalyptus, and herb. Nice finish, but still has grippy tannins, so drink it with food.

Ready to drink, some sediment so decanting could make sense. Opened one hour before, which helped. A very fine wine for those who like Sangiovese. Wine can probably be kept for another 5 years, but not sure if it will improve.

This wine was ever so slightly corked, and I'm a little embarrassed to say we drank it anyway! The cork taint was so subtle, and the wine underneath was so great that it was actually pretty good. Either I have bad luck with Italian wines, or there is some predisposition for Italian wines to be corked more than other regions.

Tuesday Night Double Blind $60+ (Bin 75): Dark crimson garnet, dark red rim; tobacco, lots of green pepper and herbs on the nose, darker red fruit, currant, a certain plumpness to the fruit; hints of soy on the palate, structured but showing some age, smoky, green pepper, licorice, firm tannin and acid; reminiscent of Bordeaux.

Decanted for two hours. 85% Sangiovese, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc. Crimson in color. Fading to rust at the edge of the glass. 13.5% ABV. Perfumed nose of cloves, flowers, melted licorice and dark fruits. Full bodied with strong acidity. Flavors of crushed cherries, plums, menthol and spice. The finish is endless and punctuated with substantial coarse tannins. This has the stuffing to age like the 1990 that is still a beautiful wine at 25 years of age. Drink over the next 7-10 years.

The wine is clear and bright with a deep garnet colour.
The nose is clean and developing, showing medium(+) intensity aromas of oak (cedar), bottle ageing (tobacco, truffles), black fruit (dark plums, dark cherries), flowers (lavender and hints of violets) and hints of herbaceous notes (green bell pepper).
The wine is dry in the mouth with a medium(+) acidity. It has medium(+) supple tannins and a medium(+) alcohol. It has a full body and pronounced flavours of oak (cedar), bottle ageing (tobacco,), black fruit (baked plums, dark cherries), flowers (lavender) and hints of herbaceous notes (green bell pepper). The finish is long.
It is an outstanding quality wine. It shows complexity provided by oak and bottle ageing and it has a lingering finish. It has very concentrated flavours and all structural elements are in balance.
Can drink now, but it has enough tannic and acidic structure, as well as fruit concentration, to continue developing tertiary aromas over the next 2-3 years.

Blackish core, ruby rim, opaque. On nose and palate, dark fruit, clean earth, savoury meatiness, cola, subtle oak; a lot going on. High acidity, high level of grippy (but not astringent) tannins, high alcohol (label=13.5% but seems higher); yet nice balancing act. Rich, full-bodied but not awkwardly heavy, very long, very complex. Magnificent at first opening, and even more so with time in the glass. My new favourite vintage of Tignanello.

My first of a case bought after drinking a bottle back in 2009. Decanted briefly.......much too briefly as it turned out......then drank with a friend over 2-3 hours to accompany a serious steak dinner. This hasn't evolved much since 2009.......heavily tannic and young even with the softening effects of steak. Enjoyable but sometime in the future this will be twice the wine. For now, I would recommend a 4-hour decant at least.

In really perfect shape from the opening moment to the last sip demure fruit with italian earth in an old world style mixed well with various black truffle dishes at Vie

Yes, sometimes expensive wines are worth it. This has a beautiful nose dark fruit and floral nuances. Also coco and leather. Medium bodied and rich in the mouth. Modest tannins and a solid finish that went on for nearly a minute. Bit more structure and longer finish and this would have been a 95+ wine.

Was it the anticipation of my first bottle of Tig?....not sure but this was probably the biggest wine disappointment ever! How can there possibly be 85% Sangiovese in here!!??....it never showed itself. The 10% Cab Sav totally dominates this wine and not in a particularly good way. This was clunky/chunky, had some good fruit in the middle but a very tart (almost astringent) finish. If drunk blind I may have thought this was a cheap Cab Sav from California without any of the warmth or charm. At this price would much rather have 2 bottles of the Ridge Estate Cabernet than one of these. Absolutely no link to Tuscany - really could have been from anywhere - San Guido and Ornellaia 2nd and 3rd wines are light years better. I have a case of 2006 in bond which I will be shipping on after this tasting.
Color: Opaque core w/ a brick ruby rim Smell: Smoke, graphite, Chaga tea, forest floor, and a faint hint of old leather Taste: Dried red fruits, spice, dark fruits, and bloody meat with a lingering note of leather and clove. Overall: This is a beautiful and lovely vision of what Tuscany can offer. As it's my first real experience with Tignanello I'd have to say that I'm impressed, but I think it still needs time. I'd check in on this again in 2019.

By far the least impressive wine of the night, although quite good. Tannins are fine, acid is still noticeable, but the length isn't top-tier. Paled in comparison to the rest of the wines that night.

Tonight the 2004 Tig was singing! Decanted in the cellar for 2 hours and seemed to be best after 3. This had great depth of dark fruits some earthy notes with complexity and finesse. Just WOW!

This wine is entering the exact phase that I prefer. It is poetic, reminiscent and yet has a body and character of its own. Upon opening a gorgeous aromas of matured dark fruits, with leather, fresh wet earth and a hint of graphite as well as vanilla. On the palate it is simply gorgeous, mature, and dignified from the 10 years of age. Suave, again poetic and speaking softly yet with so many verbs and sweet words that you almost want to 'listen' to what it wants to say. A 'classic' Tignanello at a gorgeous state. A beautiful texture and wish all wines could be opened at such stage... Cheers,

A great Tignanello, ready for business but will continue to improve and last and last. Wonderful. We had a 2006 as well , just as wonderful! 5 years since my last bottle and it improved and still has a ways to go. I hope I can hold these and not drink them for another few years.

2014 New York Wine Experience Trip; 10/14/2014-10/21/2014 (New York City, NY): A blend of 85% Sangiovese, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc, this deep ruby iteration of Tignanello sports a very intense nose of raspberries, red plums, allspice and dark chocolate. It is a full-bodied offering, with crisp acidity, medium firm tannins and nicely integrated alcohol. The flavors build in the middle and the lengthy finish concludes with some tannic grip. Perhaps another couple of years in the cellar will round out some of the rough edges. Drink 2016-2030.

Tasted in a vertical with the 1995 and the 1998, this was included mainly for academic reasons, as the wine is still youthful and not yet fully resolved. This shared the same dark color as the other two, but with brighter garnet glints at the rim. This was decanted two hours in advance and consumed over the next four hours, which made the wine more approachable than it was on opening. Quite constrained at first, this had an obviously dense nose with some heat on it, and astringent tannins. Over time this opened up a bit, revealing oily notes intertwined with the aroma of rich perfume. The palate was concentrated yet elegant; there is still so much flavor wrapped up inside this one. I will leave my remaining bottle in the cellar for at least three years, though the example of the 1995 would indicate that another decade of cellaring won't be wasted, especially considering the superlative nature of this vintage.

On initial opening wine was still tight with a bit of an edge. Decanted for 2+ hours before we started to drink. That took all of the edge off and the wined warmed up fantastic. inviting chocolate/leather, touch of vanilla/espresso. exactly what you'd expect after 10 years. love this wine.

Slightly hazy in my recollection but this was fantastic and drinking really well right now. Decanted it opened up to a medium + intensity nose of blackcurrant and cherry with earth notes also. On the palate the feel was smooth and packed a lot of dark fruit and complexity with leather and earth notes. Tannins were medium + but soft and there was a noticeable acidity. Perfectly balanced with a medium + finish. Drink or keep.

Starting to show some browning in color. On the nose there is grilled meat and smoke along with dark berries. Lots of acidity and good concentration on the palate. A touch of earthiness. Tannins are still strong, but not overbearing. There is a lot of potential left in this wine. I think it could continue to improve for another 10 years.
Paolo recommended it over some Barolo and other Toscana wines, suggested only the 04 vintage if it is for Tignanello.
Powerful, mildly tannic but light on the palate at pop, lack any oak. Decanted for 40mins and began with full nose of berries. Not alot of secondary throughout the first 1.5hours until hint of licorice, vanilla, earth and coffee when it came to last sips.
Pretty steady, approachable wine

Clear dark garnet color. Outstanding bouquet of fresh black cherries, anise, leather, red licorice, stony soil, forest floor. Similar on the palate, full body with excellent structure and firm tannins. Seems young. Would love to re-visit this in another five years. My #3 tonight.

Solid middle-aged claret tasting wine. More cabernet tasting than sangiovese, and a bit too much oak still. Definitely a steak wine at this age. Probably will improve over the next 5-10 years.

93-94 pts

This bottle was shared at a NYC Build Co-Op Board meeting, and the meeting went perfect, so much better than without wine. All enjoyed the wine, though there was no food on the table, with the most elderly in the room at 80 years old loving it the most. I should have served the magnum.

Garnet colored. Initially impression was austere on the nose and palate...not pleasant. Decanted 2-3 hours and what a metamorphosis! And just kept getting better and better. By the second day, wow! Smoke and forest on the nose. Palate of tobacco and leather. Fruit reserved and mellowing. Somewhere between red and black. Moderate complexity. Perhaps reminiscent of a Graves? Tannins balanced after several hours. Very enjoyable. Solid finish. At this time just make sure it is opened sufficiently early!

Decanted for 2 hours and this needed another 2 hours to open. So balanced with silky tannins and a long finish. This was the best Tig I have had in a long time. If I would have rated it after 2 hours the score would have been 90-91. Maybe it was to cold as I decanted in the cellar? Clearly a beautiful wine that needs a healthy decant or a few more years in the cellar.

Tuesday night in H-town with dontime (Lucio's BYOB, Houston): Nose of earth, blackberry, black currant, and cherry with some vanilla and spice. On the palate, nice sweet black currant, tobacco, leather, earth. Finished with a decent amount of tannic grip. Great structure and mouthfeel, still looks to be better with a little more age.

2004 Supertuscans (Stockholm): Out of our lineup of five 2004 "supertuscans", this is the most accessible and flirty, with more than a hint of bordeaux-styled complexity and development. If we were to choose one for drinking now, this is it. Well-managed oak, yet the long-haul potential seems to be more limited than Flaccianello's.

Dark crimson color with a funky nose of Chanterelle mushrooms and dust. The palate is full-bodied with a warm, caressing feel in the mouth featuring flavors of sweet, ripe currant, cardamom, espresso, vanilla and oak. Finishes with a hint of spice and eucalyptus on a certain heightened refinement that would seem to come short and flat but nonetheless turns out rather elegantly. This is a beautifully layered Tignanello. Not one of my high scorers due to the finish, but certainly very inspiring and memorable. Definitely a must try. Drink now until 2024.

As usual, very delicious. Lower score tonight is because we popped and poured a 375m directly from the cellar. Never really gave it a chance to breath. Having said that the nose was fabulous, and the wine was really smooth and silky. The usual complex taste did not reveal itslef until the last sip, about 45 minutes after opening. This is an amazingly consistent solid performer. Love it! Going to visit the vineyard in August 2014!

Very dark, almost opaque, with dark purplish rim. Super-rich nose opened with pure blackcurrant jam, then some dark cherry and herbal notes mixed in. Med+ body, intense palate with lowish acidity, but rather within balance. Blueberries, some dried fruit, spice. Good tannic structure. Quite big, very young, yet balanced. Needs time.

From 750ml. Level was HF. Decanted and served 1.5hours later at Pied a Terre, London. Colour was a glossy, dense purple/red. Nose was closed - some leather, spices and aromatics. Palate was a wall of flavour and still too much tannin. There was plenty of black fruit but the elegance and class this wine can show, was somehwat overshadowed by its youthful state.
This was the first of a case but still a little young for my tastes. There is plenty more to come from this wine but at the moment it is tightly wound, a little dense and clumsy. This could be a *very* good Tignanello in time. If you must drink now I'd recommened a 5+ hour decant and maybe you will taste more complexity and aromatics on the palate than I did. I'm going to leave this wine 3 years and then revisit.

I decanted the wine for 1 1/2 hours, poured it back into the bottle and consumed it over four days. It was medium to dark ruby in colour and offered cherry, earth, leather, tobacco and spices on the nose. On the palate the medium-bodied, balanced wine showed cherry, mixed berries, leather, earth, tobacco, spices, some liquorice and a hint of sage, paired with medium-plus refined tannin, medium-plus acidity and very good length. Solid. Here’s the point: It is no matter if I drink Tignanellos at five, ten or fifteen years, they are always very pleasant, but never really excite me.

A one hour decant for this super Tuscan beauty and it started to sing. Rich fruit, nice acidity, tannins that were very present and smooth. There was a touch of funk initially but after an hour in the decanter I was rewarded with a wine showing complexity and depth I come to expect from Tignanello.

Decanted for 2 hours prior consumption. I stand by my notes on 11/7/2012 Nose has improved a bit Leather, spices, dark fruits, very soft and silky. The finish on this bottle was bitter with a sappy sour apple component. For a 80+ dollar bottle of this reputation and a 2 hour decant I expect a lot more from the wine....

Decanted 3 hours. Sangiovese dominant nose, damson plum, leather, black currants, black cherry, some vanilla and woodspice. A bit tight on the palate, medium-bodied, subtle dark red and purple fruit, extremely silky mouthfeel, very elegant wine but still a few years too young.

Red to dark fruit nose with strawberries, cranberries, dried citrus and stone fruits. Some meat, animality, wood and sweetish oak notes like dill and vanilla. Fullbodied and tannic dry palate with balanced acidity and ripe cherry to cassis fruit. Dusty cedar and liquorice. Mid-length. Not very approachable at the moment, but showing some good potential. A decade in the cellar might help (if one prefers drinking these more mature, like I do).

Brick red just starting to show a bit of age, terrific nose of earth berries and moss, taste of raspberries, with earth and spice, good balance long finish, however there is something a bit sharp in the finish. Drinking very well right now.
Poured half of bottle into decanter and waited for about 1hn. Still a fairly dark garnet, cannot see the typical Sangiovese bricking as of now. On the nose however this typical whiff of Sherry and oxidization I get in many mature bottles of Sangiovese, together with liquorice, dark berries and other black fruit. Initially fairly present fine tannins on the palate which soften in the decanter and create a nice balance on the palate. Nice medium, and fairly intense finish. Good match with the home made Pesto Genovese. 91-92 PS: Improves significantly with 2-3h in decanter. Much better integrated (incl. the Sherry taste which does not stand out anymore) and exceptionally smooth palate without having any youthful "fat". Impressive. Obviously needs a long decant like your BdM. 92-93

Very puzzled as I dont recognise this as the wine i had 4 years ago. Quite atypical for tignanello at age 8 as its very developed with spices and leather. While its decent i dont think thats what they had in mind for this.

I was surprised by how mature this is, especially on the nose. Mature and complex on the nose with tobacco and leather. Powerful, tannic, spicy on the palate, with a slightly unusual herbaceous aftertaste. Complex, long and very good, though. This will probably not improve anymore so I would drink up soon if I had any. (Better dip in to my 2005s and 2006s to see if they have developed as quickly as this, before it's too late.)

This wine had developed very nicely since my previous bottle about 4 years ago (see the Oct 2008 tasting note below). It has very fine tannins and a good, multilayered structure with a long finish. So much ripe fruit that this wine should still develop favorably over the next couple of years.
"Excellent full-bodied wine with loads of ripe dark fruits. Good structure and soft tannins. Already enjoyable but will definitely improve by time. Next bottle in 2-3 years."

Wonderfully complex wine with dark fruit and nice notes of earth, grass and cassis. There are some hints of smoke and leather, but that just makes the wine that more interesting. This Tignanello is drinking very well and after two hours of decanting is incredibly smooth with all the flavors in harmony. The finish goes on for 30+ seconds if you aren't tempted to take another sip.

Consumed with a 1990 Chateau, 2007 Staglin Cabernet. Wow, three different styles, three great wines. The Tig was from a 375m, with a one hour decant. The Tig held its own with the other two monsters. The Tig is still drinking beautifully, lots of fruit, wonderful smooth tannins, brilliant nose. Definitely ready to drink now - I wouldn't wait, especially with 375s.

- Aromas of cherry and smokey. It's in total harmony and has flavours of cherry, coffee, smokey and black currant with a full body. Smooth texture with a long finish - Simply amazing. We had a pietradonice and Casanova di Nero before with ribs as a main dish. This wine was an absolute balance between tannin, acidity, fruit, toffee, super long finish. If I open another bottle, it as to be the last bottle of the evening as any other wine after will taste unbalance and disappointing!

This is so fresh and juicy. This will go for years in the cellar. Finish with blueburry and earthy notes. Drink 2015-2020

Decanted for two hours. Magnificent wine. Bright red color with nose of crushed blackberries, leather and dry earth. Complex layers of red fruits, smoked bacon, tar, interesting floral notes and spices. Modest tannins, wonderfully balanced mouthfeel and nice finish.

a generous contribution from a house guest for dinner. audouzed 2 hours then decanted, and consumed over 2 hours. surprisingly open and drinking well. i expected it to be tighter, and i expected this to be spoofilated, but it was not. yes, it's a modern, somewhat punched up super tuscan, yet i found it to be quite enjoyable. tannins are round and fruit displays no heat on the finish. mildly rustic on the palate.

Excellent but could still use a lot of time to open up...I did not decant long enough (30 min). Got much better as the night wore on...I think it probably has many years left.

Immediately attractive blackcurranty nose, then mushroomns, all in a refined, classy and complex package.
Palate follows nose, with blackcurrants throughout a complex but ready to drink palate, having fine tannins amid an excellent structure. Impressive from the moment of decanting.

This bottle was surprisingly disappointing. The fruit was overpowered by a somewhat unpleasant earthiness - also a bit alocoholic and tannic. Bottle wasn't "bad", just not very good, and certainly below expectations. Will try again soon.

Fabtastic bottle! Still very powerful. Dark fruits, new leather, very very smooth, and long. No bricking at all. Drinking beautifully now, but seems that the 04's still have plenty of life left.

- Brick color with medium forming legs and aromas of eucalyptus, cherry, black currant and violet. It's in total harmony and has flavours of eucalyptus, cherry and black currant with a medium/full body. Polished texture with a long finish - Decanted 1-1/2hrs before traveling to Puntino. Aerated bottle and returned to Cave. At Puntino, Alessandro, the Sommelier on 90 day visit from Napoli, insisted on decanting again. Intense, but forthcoming Tignanello, the Best of many vintages I have enjoyed.

Popdnpourd at byob in cheap restaurant glasses. It was delicious bu the glasses don't give much nose. The fruit and depth could not be co aimed and it amplified the flavors of the food (venison, tenderloin, gorgonzola and various other things) 90+

--- COLOR: Garnet ruby w/light ruby rim NOTE: Initially smelled corked, but after 4 hours it smelled of stewed cherries, tar, tobacco, some dried leaves. Mouth is drying and just doesn't offer much pleasure. Very disappointing compared to past Tignanello experiences. Next day it strikes me: This is too similar to Barolo! And guess what, I dislike Barolo!

Unlike my previous tasting notes, this wine blew me away. This was 1 of the best SuperTuscan's that I have tasted. Very well balanced with great structure. Just the right amount of fruit. Rasberry, blackberry and red cherry.

This bottle alternated between showing its cab character and its sangio roots, depending on when I had my last bite of food. Big, full bodied, with great Italian earthy components. Great balance, long finish. It has all the right stuff in all the right places.

Had this wine at a dinner tasting. Light red ruby in color. This wine did not blow me away. It was up against a Caymus Cab Special Select 1994. Earthy in nature and a very smooth finish.

CellarTracker Texas Offline II - Part One (oskiwawa's house in McKinney, Texas): Tasted non blind. Opened and allowed to slowly oxygenate for four hours before serving. Garnet color in the glass. slightly cloudy looking. Nose of light coffee notes up front followed by tobacco, dark berries and dark plums. Flavors of black berries and black cherries. Bright acidity, medium to firm tannins, medium body. Drink now with a couple of hours in the decanter or hold for another 3-4 years before trying again. 92++?

CT Texas Offline #2 Oskiwawa Raises The Bar; 11/5/2010-11/6/2010 (McKinney, TX): Nose of earth and black fruits with some vanilla and spice. On the palate, nice sweet black fruit, tobacco, leather, earth. Finished with substantial tannins that quickly overwhelmed the fruit. Great structure and mouthfeel. Not scored but this promises a great future.

Served to Billie and Greg with Jeannine's amazing linguine with Abruzzo (tomato/onion/garlic/olive oil/salt pork/basil/spices) sauce. No notes. Wonderful, balanced wine that is really drinking well now in spite of its youth.

Popped and poured from a 375. First night, very dark, deep earthy tones, very deep dark fruit flavor. Big nose. Second night, really softened up - very smooth silky tannins, and much more light fruit appeared on the palate. This is really nice wine!

I have enjoyed this wine in Alta Badia after a day of skiing. A modern style, deep coloured wine. In the nose and the taste the wine showed very youthful, even a little bit too young. A deep and concentrated, nearly hefty, but also polished wine. Although a very good wine, to me this wine missed some character and personality. Still a wine to obtain and wait for several years to see its development.

Still terrific, as always, but I can't help but feel it's a little compressed/closed and inexpressive compared to what it was showing two years ago (just after release). Otherwise, plush and forward but elegant.

LOVELY WINE! Decanted via Vinturi and consumed right away. I feel Matt Scott's descriptors are Bang On and can not add more descriptors. I would say that I feel this is still young with a merlot feel dominating. Definitely outstanding in the 93-95 range!

I am really biased against Tignanello as it is usually overpriced. This is the third bottle I have tried and i think it is one of the fwd examples and is a lovely wine. Needs decanting 1hr plus. Fine elegant, pure yet well round on the tannin front. Ready now but will improve for sure.

Decanted for two hours. This is my last of twelve bottles. One of my Desert Island wines. A nice red-violet and maroon with a lessening rim. Raisin, charcoal, sandalwood, fresh cut flowers, tobacco and a little smoke. The nose alone has a great finish. Beautiful velvety tannins and the mid-palate is more evident now than it was two years ago. On the palate, the raisins and smoke are even more evident, however not obnoxious at all. Such prudent concentration and the right amount of layers. The finish is round and still has a touch of finesse. There's an acidity that is still acute. This is almost like Lafite in Tuscany. Very serious and very pretty. If you have this, it's a joy to drink now (with a decant) and will last for a long time. I still have two magnums and will hold off for a few years. A Super Tuscan classic! Drink 2011 - .

I am usually not a big fan of this wine given the dominance by Sangiovese, but tonight the wine drank surprisingly like a Bordeaux. Smoky, sweet fruit with grilled meats, eucalyptus and coffee on the nose. The wine gained concentration with time, with tannins sooo smooth and round it took me by surprise. With more time in glass it finally started to turn acidic on the finish, and later died horribly and turned medicinal. But for a time it drank beautifully.

Absolutely wonderful wine, decanted only about 20 minutes before we started consumption. Wine opened up in the glass as time progressed. This wine , while young is approachable, it had a nice mid palate and finish. In 5-10 years this wine will be a blockbuster.

Deep garnet to maroon with a very thin clear outline. Black and red cherry, stewed strawberry, tobacco and leather on the nose. The palate is filled with velvety black cherry, licorice, tar and currant. Very modern style but at the same time holds great depth and character. The body, richness, and purity make me believe this will age with grace for years to come.

COLOR - nice dark purple/red. NOSE - very serious, deep cherry and anise; sangiovese obvious. TASTE - a bit lighter than I expected, but love the structure, as everyone else puts it. Elegant is best word to describe it. Don't know how this will age, as it seems to be giving all it has right now; try again in a year (a bit disappointed). RATING - 92.

Tuesday night dinner with friends (my place): The nose starts out a little funky with cabbage and onions but ends with a lot of different spices. Refreshing dark plum fruit with hints of coffee and in the end a little buttermilk. The tannins are very harsh with a spicy feel to it and it is difficult to get the wine to open up. Really nice and refreshing length but it was apparantly very closed and even after a couple of hours it would not really open.. It does however feel like there is a lot of things going on underneath. A wine that will be interesting to follow.

Tuesday dinner with friends (Canan's place): Dark red color. Warm, ripe black berries, cherries, licorice on the nose. A lot seems to be hiding just under the surface, but it seems to be in a closed phase right now. Juicy black fruit on the palate, cherries and black currant, licorice, marzipan and cherry stone bitterness. Full-bodied, good intensity, great structure and balance. Everything seems to be in place but really needs more time for now.

A long weekend in Seaside, OR; 6/5/2009-6/7/2009 (Seaside, OR): The nose had red fruits and earth along with a brett note that I hadn't remembered tasting before. After about 2 hours of air, the nose took on a pumpkin pie like aroma that was really interesting. The brett was no longer noticeable. Medium bodied at first, but it did gain some weight with additional air. I first tasted this wine back in 12/07, and it has lost some of the blackberry flavors and velvety mouthfeel that it had back then, but it was still an excellent wine that I would love to taste again.

Consumed only the 375 ml bottle - decanted for about 1.5 hours - this is becoming a wine of classics - beautiful colour - ruby red, very fruitful aromas - lots of berries and then you get the old Italian Terroir with Tobacco Truffles and earthy flavours and aromas. We enjoyed it as a starter and taster, with old cheeses - Piave and Truffle Parmiggiano - accompanied with Hot (medium spicy) dried homemade italian sausage - it truly made the wine more enjoyable - Beautiful Wine and truly a treat - This wine will be a 97 rating in a few years.

Pre-Opening Dinner at Union J Restaurant, Hong Kong (Lan Kwai Fong, Central, Hong Kong): Only opened (not decanted) for two hours before serving. Black inpenetrable colour. Very primary nose of oak and blackcurrant but with tremendous purity. Brilliant on the palate.......full of huge promise; so pure, welcoming and beguiling as the mutliple layers hinted at how they will emerge in the future. Good and growing length. Gorgeous and will evolve to become fabulous.

After this first hour of decanting, it was not giving up much aromatically, but after hour two it really started to sing. Beautiful nose of red currant, leather, a tiny bit of vanilla toast. On the palate, a superbly balanced wine. Medium weight, nice red fruit, rich mid-palate, decent acidity and wonderful finish. There are obviously some unresolved tannins, but I would agree that after a two hour decant, this might be the best young Tig ever.

A great disappointment. The Brett on this wine was so overpowering that it was impossible to get past the Band-Aid, horse leather nose. I'll assume it came from a bad lot as I cannot imagine that this wine came remotely close to receiving the scores it has.

Lots of body with dark fruits and spice -- this hangs together very well and has a youthful, fresh nose and taste. Very well integrated with good tannin and length. You could really taste the cab coming through -- I don't have very much experience tasting young sangiovese wines, so this was a learning experience. I am intrigued to see how this develops.

Was opened some hours before tasting. On the nose it's concentrated, dark and ripe, warm and spicy, even bay leaf. On the palate it is round, everything is in it's place, tannins are great, already good to drink. Rather elegant than very intense and huge. I expected more, after Wine Spectator's 95 points, but definitely an excellent wine.

A medium to full bodied Tignanello that is well balanced and devoid of the slightly dirty flavors I often get from this wine in off vintages. Ripe dark plum and cherry fruit with good richness and intensity. This should be a fine Tignanello that should age nicely. 90+

Drank over dinner with Alesia Antinori at Crown Wine Cellars, Hong Kong. Lovely colour, good nose, great structure with enough Sangiovese to keep it true to its roots. Some length. Beautifully made. Much too young to show its true colours, even over dinner and with a lot of time in the glass. I'd re-visit this in 4-5 years.

Visited the vineyard on the afternoon, stop at osteria at Badia a Passignano (Antinori's flagship Sangiovese Chianti Classico). Tasted the upcoming 2005 Tignanello from their barrels (French, Hungarian, and US). Can imagine it is going to be great wine. Open and decant a bottle of 2004 vintage, nose notes of blackcurrants, summer fruits, spice, oak, bit of herbs. Good palate feel, and textured. Good finish. As compared to others vintage, this one is closed to 1999.

Bad bottle? Wow! 96 easy.

Dense in the mouth, built on ripe fruit, cedar, vanilla, against a background of garrigue, tea, graphite and ink. Complex and fully developed, so enjoy now over the coming 3-5 years.

I enjoyed this.

delicious. pnp and drunk over 2 hours. nice brighter red fruit; some asian spices. good acidity. fruit forward but not over the top in any way; quite smooth and medium bodied. def not Bordeaux to me but also not as over the top fruit bomb as a CA cab.

13,5% alcohol.

Decanted at Garth's. This is a mature, structured super-tuscan with a smoky and oaky nose, ample fruit and smooth tannins. Very classy. Sampled alongside '05 Solaia which had even greater finesse and sophistication.

On the nose, forest, blackberry with hints of vanilla and spices. On the palate lovely sweet blackberry and black currant, tobacco, leather and black pepper. Full-bodied, long, complex finish with black pepper and a little caramel.

Ok fruit of dark cherries, cassis.
In my opinion this wine lacks balance at the moment.
The acidity and fruit does not match with the tough tannins.
Typically dry, dry tannins.

PS: Improves significantly with 2-3h in decanter. Much better integrated (incl. the Sherry taste which does not stand out anymore) and exceptionally smooth palate without having any youthful "fat". Impressive. Obviously needs a long decant like your BdM. 92-93

Still young - deep red color with solid fruit initially. Really seemed like a very modern, New World wine at first, but the finish was a bit rustic and interesting. Outstanding now, but should get better.

Poured at a tasting at The Wine Club SF: beautiful nose of coffee, raisin; light to medium weight on the palate, but very tight on the back end finish. Wine of the flight. This will be a terrific wine in a couple of years. Very Good.

Too young but already very drinkable. Redanted twice. Oak is still a bit present in the nose. Very very concentrated. Taste: Black fruit, cacao, spices, complexity. Very long.
