2009 Château Léoville Barton

Community Tasting Notes

Community Tasting Notes (185) Avg Score: 93.7 points

  • The 2009 Léoville Barton offers a pretty, wild strawberry nose, full of cedar pencil. Layer on layer of naturally sweet mixed berry fruit evolve in the mouth, complemented by sea air and potpourri (elements which the three Léovilles share). There are sometimes Brett problems with this wine and this example is unfortunately affected by this, growing increasingly conspicuous with time. But clean examples are fabulous.

Very good but definitely still in its gangly youth. Try again in 2027.

  • Glass: Riedel Sommelier Bordeaux
Popped and poured from half bottle. Clear, deep ruby-garnet color. Clean, medium+ intense, developing nose with lots of red fruit, spices and fine tobacco. Beautiful depth and density.
On the palate with a beautiful high, present tanning structure and lively acidity. Fine red fruit, green pepper, salt, violets and fine tobacco. Beautiful creamy texture, dense and deep, great balance and long finish. Starts to sing, but is far away from its peak. Beautiful 94+

  • At first relatively muted on the nose but showing notes of blackberry, graphite, leather. The palate was large indeed with an attack of ripe primary black fruits, giving way to a midpalate dominated by minerals/ciagr box and tightly coiled tannins. Throughout the night it continued to open but was still nowhere near ready at the ~2 hour mark. This wine is classic bordeaux but also big and ripe, with huge structure to go along. Will take maybe another 5-10 years for everything here to come together but certainly a quality production in a legendary year. 93 points with 94-95 potential.

  • Notes of blueberry and black plum, cedar and eucalyptus; quite juicy.
Very smooth tannins and low abv makes this fairly light for a Bordeaux.
Would be better if it had a bit more structure.

  • Earthy, vanillin, dark fruit bouquet. A little young, but displays good rich fruit on the palate with medium tannins. Good length on the finish. Needs 5+ years to fully develop. Decanted for 6 hours.

  • I was aggressive with this wine, it really needed a lot of air time, so I gave it a few splash decants, swirling, sipping and slow ox. On the second day it turns inky with predominant pencil lead/graphite aromas and flavors accompanied by unmistakable licorice snap, earthy truffle, mushroom too. 5th review and probably last.

  • Expressive aromas of crème de cassis, forest floor, tobacco and #2 lead pencil lead to a rich, round, balanced dose of palate staining sweet blackberry flavors with a lingering eucalyptus edge.

  • Seems backward at the moment? Upon PnP it seemed devoid of fruit, slight exaggeration but compared to what i was expecting. The nose very tertiary. Then an hour later the fruit is stronger and overall more acidic. 2 hours later it keeps going. But wasn't great. And wasn't thrilled at all. Drank what was left over a few days later after it was sitting corked at room temp, and it was delicious. Hmm. Hope it's not in my head or that the provenance from its source wasn't good - either would be troubling. XD

  • Decanted for 6 hours. Tawny garnet colour. Blackcurrants and cherries on the nose. Dry chewy elegance on the palate and medium finish. Super smooth, well structured St Julien.

  • Decanted 2 hours; great St. Julien earth nose and flavor; licorice as well; medium body, a good wine just not much depth here

Quite warm vintage but no heat and a lovely pure fruit and balance.

  • An easy afternoon with close friends (@ PdV): The bouquet is still somewhat locked but shows wonderful dark berries, beautiful oak and cedar and a lovely touch of sweetness. On the palate a sweet start of ripe dark berries, beautiful acidity and round tannin. A mouth full of berries, chocolate and vanilla. Great wine with a great future. 95 for this evening.

  • Perfect bottle level. Cork removed intact with only the cork edge stained purple. No apparent seepage. Allowed 90 minutes slow ox before first glass. Dark opaque garnet in glass. Nose - Ripe dark fruit (blackberry/cassis), violets, pencil lead, tobacco leaf, and Bay Leaf spice. Palate - mostly echoed the nose. Mouthfeel - medium to full bodied with medium->long finish. Mildy drying tannins noted on finish. Nice complexity with very nice balance of wine elements. Very bordeaux!

  • Decanted for one hour. Nose of violet, blackberry, currant, anise, tobacco leaf, pencil lead and spice. Ripe black fruit, pencil lead, anise, tobacco leaf, spice and mineral on the palate. Very long, dry finish. Elegant balance. Medium to full bodied. Served with wood fired strip steaks with Diane sauce.

  • Not really feeling this. Drank after a Rhys pinot that was singing and this was showing on the Bordeaux funky side (perhaps a bit of Brett?). Improved as I got used to it but not really my thing. Others seemed to have similar traction. Definitely in the secondary phase and not tight so this is different than some other notes.

  • Very tight on open, Slow ox for 90 mins, much better. Exceptional balance and secondary flavors, maybe a bit short on finish. Terrific.

  • From the medium garnet colouration, and the warm cassis and cigar box nose, I guessed that this was a young Bordeaux from a ripe year. Possibly 2009? Bingo!

Blend: 77% Cab, 23% Merlot. 60% new oak.
Nose: Blackberry with some menthol and autumn leaf freshness too.
Body: Medium, with rounded soft tannins
Palate: Blackcurrant, light pencil lead and graphite
    Finish: Medium to long.

I reckon that Leoville Barton has some of the most consistent quality and fair pricing for such a high-quality maker, thus it is not a surprise that I have tried this 13 times over the past 10 months; It all started with a 2014, then came the 2012, 2007, 2006, 2005, 2009, 2010, 2008, 1995, 1990, 1996, and most recently in HK, the superb 2000.

Jancis Robinson described that this is as good as any LBs in its best recent years, such as 2000, 2003 and 2005. I have to say I agree, and this was very enjoyable even though it was past 10pm and was the last bottle of the evening. Steven Spurrier (Decanter) added that this is a classical Saint-Julien with that hint of the opulence from the vintage.

Charming and easy enough to like, even though it is still at a rather primary stage in its development. This was bottle 9 of 9, thanks to Eng for sharing this at our Champignon dinner.

  • Pop n pour drank after 2009 lynch bages which had been decanted a few hours. The barton was much more interesting more bordeaux like and complex with earthiness, tobacco and dark fruit. Has plenty of life left

  • Young, fresh, complex. Wonderful!

  • Enjoyable and great, but still a little stern, old school style of cedar and hints of graphite alongside the juicy 09 cassis notes. A headmaster trying to relax. Worth drinking now but will improve for sure.

Update day 2. Yesterday was a glass from coravin, as part of a solo dad coping mechanism until my wife returns from her gals jaunt. Left in cellar overnight. Today much calmer smoother and more elegant. Coravin is really a slow ox.
So this says … long decant for greatness now, or a few more years.

  • Gentlemen's birthday weekend - wine tasting journey: Liguria & the Cote d'Azur; 5/18/2023-5/20/2023 (Perinaldo, Liguria, Italy & Cote d'Azur France): Clearly recognized as a high class middle age Bordeaux. Just the sub domain and dominant grape was not easy to find out. Aristocratic nose and taste.

Was it worth, waiting 10 years to taste this wine - probably not. Was I happy to have tasted it at this occasion? Yes.

  • Splash decantered (but probably needs more than this). Nose needs a lot of coaxing. Still seems on the young side with a firm tannic backbone. Nice wine. Will try and hold my final bottle for a few more years. 94-95+

  • Note taken after four hours of air, but also drank reasonably well upon opening.

Traditional Bordeaux cassis and pencil shavings on the nose. The palate has lots of juicy fruit, with a nice balance of cedar. Tannins are rather firm, but not overly so. The finish lasts for nearly a minute. Fantastic wine. Drinkable now, but still has decades ahead of it.

  • Three hour slow ox. Deep dark, yet vibrant magenta color. Blackberry, blueberry, fig, cherry, mushroom, magnolia, crushed walnuts, and subtle burnt ends. Smooth, dry palate. Firm, full, lower intensity tannins on the longish finish.

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this. It was WOTN amongst five very different bottles. Terrific complexity. I doubt this will get any better for my palate.

  • Intended for a vertical with 90/95/96.

The wine had a promising nose of tobacco, cedar, meaty smoke and brooding black fruits. As it slid down my palate, I was hit with disappointment - it was corked and the whole palate was covered in wet cardboard.

I will have to re-visit again - this seems like a great bottle.

  • K&L Saturday Bordeaux tasting. Very young, dark, and burly. Seems like there might be something great here but hard to say from this tiny, very tannic taste. Hold till 2030+

  • 5th bottle in 6 years. Refreshingly only 13pc alcohol and picked early enough to avoid overripeness. Nose a bit reserved at first and later opens up to blackcurrant and violet. Graphite and real depth of fruit on the palate. Huge smoky finish. Tannins have belatadly asserted themselves as is so often the case with hot vintages and will take years to get back in balance. The 2009/10 vintages are our generations 1928/9 (one hot fruit packed and soft, the other huge and structured; rarely do such vintages come back to back) and I can attest to the complexity of a 1928 Cos at 60 years old. This is a monumental wine still in its infancy and will last decades. I'll wait 3 more years before the next bottle, which isn't long enough. Plenty of potential for the score to improve.

  • 03102022 - Tang’s Room LB vertical (2005 till 2010) & Lunch

Moving on to the battle of 09, 08 & 10. Must say that this is my 3rd fav of the whole vertical session. Much more perfumed nose - ethereal black fruit, Cadbury milk chocolate, welcoming notes of pencil shavings, cigar box & dried herbs. Lose out to the 08 & 10, as I felt this is simply less luscious in terms of fruit & perhaps the tannins is still rather angular compared. Finish is medium long

  • What a super fresh nose of floral and did I detect it .. hints of graphite (My favourite!) as well. I don't know if I was imagining things, but towards the end of the 4 hour session, there even seemed to be some violet or blue flowers on the nose.

On the palate, there initially seemed to be higher acidity, which quickly mellowed and became integrated with the rounded tannins. The quality of the blackcurrant and cherry fruits was amazing, and lush too. Most interestingly, the 2009 vintage presented itself with the longest finish of the flight, an amazing 40 plus seconds!

    LB 2005-2010 vertical, rank (of 6): 3rd.
I was slightly surprised this 2009 came out behind the 2010, but I think we were simply nit-picking, and both the 2009 and 2010 are equally amazing vintages especially for the long-run.
The 2009 Bordeaux vintage is described as both lush as well as rich and smooth, and this bottling certainly showcased all these virtues along with longevity and cellar potential.

EC, along with myself, HS, Rom, and usual suspects MT and JY, purchased this box-set ex-chateau, and enjoyed it over a period of 4-5 hours one afternoon.

    Weather:
Decanter.com describes this 2009 vintage as the "ripe middle vintage" of 2005, 2009 and 2010. I concur with Jane Anson that when comparing the 2 super vintages of 2009/2010, the latter or 2010 is expected to be more long-lived and has greater cellar potential at the present.
2009 presented itself with a very warm and even summer, following good weather during flowering with lots of sunshine. This allowed for the growth and creation of luscious wines and ripe fruit too.

    History:
Léoville Barton, along with Léoville-Las Cases and Léoville-Poyferré was once part of the huge Léoville estate.
The estate was purchased by Hugh Barton in 1826, and amazingly continues to be owned by the same Barton family who are of Irish descent. Anthony Barton is the present propietor, having run the estate from 1983.

Léoville Barton is operated along with its sister property, Langoa Barton. In fact, these 2 Saint Julien properties have the longest continuous duration of ownership by the same family of any of the other current owners in all of Bordeaux!

  • Five hour decant and then drunk over 3 days. I was surprised to find that after 13 years there was even less development than I expected and especially at day 1 the wine felt rather closed. It improved a bit, but not that much over the next two days, which probably says it needs at least another 10 years. 7 more bottles, will try the next one in 4-5 years. Black cherries, cassis, pencil shaving, menthol, leather, dark plum, choclate. Medium bodied, medium+ acidity, round tannins, long finish
    Today 91/92

  • Compared to the excellent last bottle in 2020, this one was a bit closed and disappointing. Not at all present when P&P, but then opened up after 2h of decanting. Never got close to the 2020 experience.

  • Quelle belle bouteille!

  • Full-bodied, with a fabulous level of depth, richness, complexity, and ample freshness allowing all of its layers of sweet, ripe, lush, powerful currants, tobacco, cigar box, flowers, and cedar to shine through on the nose and palate. There is ample structure for aging, but the tannins and the fruits are so ripe, that this is already quite a treat. Drink from 2022-2055.

  • Gorgeous wine… always love LB and 2009 is a classic. Still a youngster but the beautiful flavours of cherry, raspberries and darker fruits layered across cedar wood and such fine tannins are majestic. Acidity feels a little high or maybe just the youthfulness. Incredibly satisfying and works really well with simply cooked highly quality steaks with that lovely lingering St Juliet freshness

  • Inky, big blood red. Decanted 6 hours and 4x decanted. And still very youthful. Nose was still a bit hot at the outset, but that eventually blew off. Rich and dense. Licorice and some herbal notes, with loads of black fruits. A long time before this hits its stride.

  • Why do I keep opening a bottle?! I can’t seem to learn from my previous notes. This wine needs to be locked-up and put away until I retire from my career.
Slow ox’ed for approximately an hour then drank for the next 3 at a friends-gathering in San Francisco. Enjoyed with various Japanese nd Thai food. Classic Bordeaux, old-fashion compared to 2009 Kapcsandy Grand Vin that was also opened and enjoyed by the group.

  • Dark ruby, long legs, red fruit forward ripe blueberries , light nectarines , light leather, graphite . Dry, full body, strong frontal tannins, juicy berries with vanilla finish. Probably better to age longer in bottle.

  • Deep dark core, almost black to the rim. Mineral tones almost like black coal, a bit minty, fine black forest berries. Some tones of vanilla. Full bodied, almost sweet attack, the mid palate is full of fruit, the fruit is almost cooling and minty, the tannins are perfectly designed, high acidity. The aftertaste is very long, and there are some very intriguing mineral tones that probably will strengthen over the next decade. A wonderful version of this wine. 95

  • Blackberries, cherries, blueberries and some cedar notes. Powerful but not overdone - great elegance and balance. Velvety tannins - feels very round. Nice soft acidity. Beautiful long finish. Not exactly at the top spot but slowly getting there. Drink from 2024 onwards. (IG)

  • From memory. Still quite young with a purple hue. Drank against a 2004 Les Forts de Latour that was much more mature (and equally excellent). In contrast, this was still quite primary on the nose, full of drank black and blue fruits — cassis, blackberry, huckleberry/blueberry - and notes of cedar and spice (oak). Very precise. The palate was consistent, dark fruit driven, but balanced with supple but firm tannin structure and nice acidity that gave the wine some lift along the ripe fruit. Alcohol felt a little high, but I didn’t check the bottle. Great length on the finish. In a nice place, but for my taste still quite young. I’ll probably pick up again in ~4-5 years (2025/2026) and this has the bones to last decades. I’d expect peak drinking in the 2030+ timeframe.

  • Monthly Tasting Group: Bordeaux and Cabs 2009 and Older (Chez Dalluge, MN): Very dark red/purple color. Small pour late in the evening that got my attention. I expected this to be way too young, and on top of that it's LB which I generally want with plenty of age to begin with, but the juicy dark fruits came through and overcame the wood and tannins, especially with our steaks. Now I just have to wait another 10 or 15 years to get full the deal. Impression 93 to 95(+?)pts potential.

  • The 2009 Léoville Barton is in a rather overtly oaky phase right now, though it eventually settles down to reveal aromas of dark berries and cassis that are heavily patinated by scents of vanilla pod, cedar, baking chocolate, espresso roast and even toasted coconut. Medium to full-bodied, with appealing tannic bite that cuts the wine's generous core of fruit (and it's hear that the estate's "old school" reputation makes itself felt), I certainly wouldn't bet against it integrating its new wood; but right now, it is best left alone (unless one is an enthusiastic Bourbon drinker).

  • Cedar and mint on the classically attractive nose. Rich, inky and truffley with good depth of raspberry and blackberry fruit. Very long, with some smoke and damp earth coming through. An overall sense of luxury, yet no trace of overcooked fruit or it being a 'hot vintage' - delicious wine.

Decanted for 1 hour this time and it was ready to go. Nose remains similar with of black fruits, cedar, graphite and a hint of smoke.

The palate remains beautiful and very well balanced. The complexity of layers from sip to swallow is amazing. Flavors of blackcurrant, blackberry and blueberry. Towards the end the cedar and oak come though with a continued finish of herb's and licorice.

I'll sit on my other bottle for a year or two then enjoy what it has to offer then.

  • This was a big fall from grace from my previous bottle review one year ago. It seemed to be in deep hibernation and very reticent to give much. I'll probably wait another year to open the next one. It's a shame because I expended a lot of effort to obtain this bottle. The label on this bottle had faded due to retail florescent lights used in their cellar. Did the lighting affect the wine? I have to wonder.

  • Read my review on the 2010. What an excellent wine, just still a bit young. The ‘10 is much more approachable, and more integrated at the moment. Not sure which one will out lice the other, but I feel like they are both excellent QPR.

  • Another extraordinary bottle of LB! Ok, 100pts. in terms of LB, but still very high 90s against peers...this is just terrific. Hard to hold back the enthusiasm for this wine and its prospects over the medium to long term! Bravo!

  • decanted for a few hours, opens up with scents of mint, mesquite and cedar, youthful, showing elegant oak influences, round and rich, yet balanced and lifted, dark berries, tobacco, wood chips and mineral flavors carry across the palate with a long finish that just sails on, the stuffing is here for the long haul, although with decanting and a nice meal it can be consumed now, especially nice with braised beef short ribs over mashed potatoes

  • Popped and poured. This is a solid red wine with some mild sediment at the end of the bottle. On the nose, I get black currant, black cherry, leather, and some fresh tobacco. In the mouth, this brings some delicious dark fruits that are nicely and finely layered. The finish shows a slight tannic prickle while also lingering with a smoldering fire aspect. Overall, this is classic Bordeaux from a great year. The wine is still very young but is enjoyable now and displays tremendous future potential. 94 points.

  • Omg...had to try this after the previous drinker’s note. And this did not disappoint. Gorgeous in every way. Classic LB but w an extra gear. 2009 is such a gorgeous vintage for Bordeaux. In two words, mind blowing.

  • This is my all time favorite wine - ever and this bottle was no disappointment. Elegant as hell, beautifully balanced, long, tobacco-ese finish on well developed dark berries flavours. The opposite of anything California, low alcohol, finesse, fruit without jam, the most heavenly French of French. Had on Thanksgiving with teenagers that mistakenly opened and started pouring without abandon before we caught them. One of them, who drinks 90+ pointer Brunello's with us on a regular basis, but swears "I can't tell the difference between this and Franzia (ahem!), for the first time said: "Oh, THIS is good." Haha.

  • This is very good. Very concentrated fruit: blueberry, blackberry & black cherry, some graphite notes.
It is still young but is already generous. I would wait a few more years but this is going to be amazing.

  • Dark purple colour. Big dark plum and mocha nose, later cassis. Loads of soft tannins and plenty of fruit. Very long finish. This wine has some way to go before it's at it's best, perhaps another 5 years and will then last for decades.

  • Remaining samples from J. Aired in bottle for more than a day already. This 2009 Barton just keeps getting better and better every time I taste it over past few years. Drank in Gabriel Standart.
Appearance is clear, deep intensity, ruby colour. Legs. Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of cedar, polished blackberries, blackcurrant black plum, dark toast wood, tobacco. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol (13%), fine high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of tobacco ash, blackberries, blackcurrant, black plum, dark earth, black licorice, cedar wood background. Long finish.
Very good quality. This 2009 Bordeaux developing well!

  • Bouquet of grilled peppers and cigar box. Initially quite reticent palate, medium-bodied, no sign of 2009, long, elegant finish. Second night wine woke up, sweeter, rounder but still very elegant, finely grained tannins. Requires more time but very enjoyable traditional claret.

  • tasted next to the 2010, the 2009 has redder fruit, maybe a bit of all spice, and is a bit softer.

  • This a great, stunning, wine; the tannins are finer than the 05 and it has a seductive opulence to it but everything is held in check with superb purity of fruit, style and class. A much better bet than the 2005 for now and for the long term. They are not even close.

  • Very deep and black-fruited - blackberry, cassis, anise, and cedar. Inky, saturating, and well-balanced. Very brooding today but cool, potent, and long.

  • An exceptional wine now and will be down the road!

Opened and decanted for 3 hours. Nice dark purple almost black with no clarity. Nose of black fruits, ceder, graphite and a hint of smoke.

On the palate this wine is beautiful. Well balanced and integrated already. Layers of blackcurrant, blackberry and blueberry. Notes of cedar and oak with a long finish of some herb's and licorice.

Patience is rewarded and although I was rewarded now I plan to be rewarded in a few more years!

  • Super impressive, well above expectations. 2 hour decant of half the bottle and cork back in for the remainder. Day 1; Very fine tannins, fresh, overt cabernet flavours and just super classy and lovely wine. Not that typical of 09, ie not overripe or high alcohol. Day two; very different wine, the overt cabernet flavours have faded and an almost malbec style of wine has replaced it. Mocha, dark chocolate and still those very fine tannins and freshness. Don't buy it, let me buy it.

  • This was my third bottle/review. Gaining all the classic claret characteristics, tertiary notes are coming forward. Mineral, graphite, earth. The finish is so long, it just lingers on the palate. I finished the whole bottle in 6 hrs. It was open for 9 hrs.

  • Deep black fruits with notes of lead pencil and minerals. Quite full but not overripe at all and I think the traditional nature of this wine in such a ripe vintage is a perfect match. It's not fully integrated yet but watch out when it is. 5+ years more and probably longer. 93+

  • Occasional dinner group: Bordeaux 2009 and some ringers (By SS @ De Ertepeller in Papendrecht): Classical bouquet with a firm dose of oak, cedar, dark berries, smoke, toast and graphite. On the palate the same impressions, dark berries, firm acidity, coffee and sticky tannin which is a great promise for the (distant) future. Great wine! 95 – 96+

  • Cigar box, spice, tobacco leaf, cocoa and earthy, spicy red fruits. The wine is full-bodied, and still youthful, but the tannins are so ripe, with 3-4 hours of air, you can drink it now. Or if you can wait another 5 years, this is going to be so much better. The wine was made from blending 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22.5% Merlot and .05% Cabernet Franc.

  • Opaque dark colour. Blackcurrant nose hits you when decanting and is joined with bloody, earthy and tobacco notes in the glass. Good weight, balanced. Tannins have become drier in the last couple of years and will subside again in time. Lovely now and will improve and drink well for a decade last beautifully for several more decades.

  • From a half-bottle. Nice dark purplish garnet colour. Still very dark. On the nose upon opening and (double-)decanting, aromas of blueberries and leather appear. After that, the nose is mute for the first hour (editor's note, after four hours, it is still mute). After an hour, nose opens a little bit with dark fruit, ink and a touch of leather and pine. Then raspberries and a touch of cream. On the palate, the attack is frank, tannic, but with some raspberries, blackcurrant, followed by leather, a whisper of mint from the Cabernet and finishing on a fine slightly lemony blueberry pie. The wine is still closed IMHO, and needs another 4-5 years at least, and here I am talking about half bottles. That implies next half bottle for me, not before 2023 or 2024. Nice underlying concentration, very good quality tannin, but currently mostly masking the fruit. If you decide to open this, needs several hours of air (upwards of four it never really opened up) and probably a rare to blue pepper steak. More for the potential than the pleasure today, 93? Actual pleasure - 85

  • 2009 Bordeaux 10 years in the bottle 2-day horizontal; 6/23/2019-6/24/2019 (Fribourg): Part of a grand Bordeaux 2009 tasting spanning 2 days that revealed 1) a right bank struggling with overripe fruit and overwhelming tannins, 2) wide spreak between top performers and laggards, 3) left bank, and especially Margaux, outshone the right bank cousins, 4) Top wines: Palmer, Margaux, Cheval Blanc, Vieux Chateau Certan.

    Tasting note:
Ripe blue and dark and black coffee / black chocolate complexity. Some smokeyness and menthol. Lots of tannins and wood on the palate with an unexciting finish.

  • Bordeaux 2009 - 10 Years On - 47 Reds; 6/23/2019-6/24/2019: 2009 Bordeaux after 10 years. 48 red wines. The left bank (average rating 94.2) clearly trumps the right bank (92.6): Elegance, purity and freshness vs over-extraction, ripeness and oxidation. But there are some winners on the right bank (Cheval, Petrus, Hosanna for now, Lafleur, Trotanoy medium-term) but the highest scores were given to left bank wines (Margaux #1 overall, Palmer, Mouton, for now, Latour, St. Juliens medium-term). I guess purists will not like the loads of oak-derived aromas which in some wines are great but can make the wines a bit slutty (Cheval, Margaux, quite a lot of right banks). But there are plenty of more classically shaped wines too. Overall, the 2009s are a lot of fun with many pockets of greatness but I would be very selective on the right bank. If you like more elegant, subtle and classic wines I would focus on 2005/2010/2016. All wines tasted blind and without decanting.

TN: Muted nose, more open on the palate with very fresh, pure black and blue fruit, with time red fruit, herbs and pine tree. Probably the most austere St. Julien today with velvety tannins still quite noticeable, good freshness and length just hinting its potential. Will be better once round and soft with that very alluring aromatic profile and depth. If you pop a bottle today give it a long 5+ hours decant.

Average blind score 4 tasters: 93.5
Rank: 31st out of 48 wines
    (shared rank with Ducru Beaucaillou)

  • Tasted at The Wine Society's Bordeaux tasting in London. I felt we were tasting this wine too young, it was somewhat closed. With 77% cabernet sauvignon, the blackcurrant flavours showed well and it was pleasant enough to drink. But I can't help thinking it will be so much better in about five to ten years time. Keep! Pricey at £89 a bottle.

  • Wine Spectator newbies; 10/18/2018-10/20/2018 (Marriott Marquis): Very bordeaux in style and more of the savory, tackroom style. Lots of leather. Not so much in the fruit category. A nice wine that is a bit more muted in type.

  • Nose: Beautiful black fruit, cedar, graphite and pops of red berry and cherry notes. Palate: Multi-dimensional and perhaps the best of the night. Black fruit, smoke, graphite, cedar and red cherry. Finish: Softer tannin than expected, but quite nice. Not at all overly drying and carries the fruit beautifully.

I might actually say ready now with proper decanting, but for those of you looking to keep this for decades pop a few and see how they hang out. No conviced this is a long haul Barton.

  • This was probably at its apogee about 2.5 hours in the decanter, showing a really forward, shockingly charming personality full of ripe blackcurrant, cedar, pencil, mineral, leather, and just a hint of ganache on the nose. Dash of violet on the palate. So pure and long. This may not be the longest lived Barton, but it is so terribly bewitching now. I could easily finish a bottle (or mag?) myself. It knows just where to go. I am bewitched. I will be buying more. 95+

All outstanding #1 favorite was the Super Tuscan with some preferring the Chappellet - none preferred the Bordeaux.

  • The wine was dark ruby in colour and had a dense, perfumed nose of floral notes, mixed berries, blackberry, blueberry, dust, coffee, spices and graphite. On the palate, the wine showed mixed berries, blueberry, blackberry, black currant, cherry, oak, coffee, some tobacco, spices and graphite, and it finished with a tiny bit of mint, with ripe, smooth tannin, good acidity and a long aftertaste. The wine was tight today and only opened up slowly in the decanter, but it got better and better with every minute. The wine showed even better on day two; broad and super smooth. A great Bordeaux, but a baby. Needs time. Start drinking from 2029.

  • Opened together with 2009, both decanted after 1/2 h. 2002: Deep red with a shimmer of maturity
Secondary notes with sweet slightly metallic blue- and blackberry smell.
All in all very attractive and with good developement over 4 hours
Elegant, sleek, not dissimilar to the 1996...good high pitched wood. Earthiness.
    Still some developement.
    Drink now-2025
2009: more blue and denser than 2002
Similar blue/blackberry nose, but more coffe like wood that i find a little too much. Fuller, broader than 2002, but both share a very profound structure.
Both wines represent the chateaus profile in a reliable, yes:brilliant manner

  • Deep purple color, nose of dark cherries and blackberries, palate of same. This lingers on the palate for a long while. Alcohol is restrained, tannins are still chewy. • Deep purple-black
Penetrating bouquet of ripe blackcurrant, black cherry, dry spice, pipe tobacco, roasted meat and cedarwood. Classic St. Julien.
Medium-bodied with intense flavours showing cedarwood, autumn leaves, cocoa powder, and sumptuous, cassis-led fruit underneath.
Chocolate powder almost seamless texture; there is a fleshiness, integrated medium acidity and a superb structure. This polished wine clearly shows the richness of the 2009 vintage with even the traditional Leoville Barton with a twist of modernity. The finish extends far and with a more hallmark grippy light tar tannin typical of LB. Great depth and concentration.

  • Graham/Barton tasting-cum-lunch (Restaurant Bak, Amsterdam, NL): This is a beast of a wine. It is rich, almost opulent, deep and spicy, but unlike the 2003 the ripeness is backed up by a formidable structure, well-enveloped tannins, coffee and cinnamon, toffee even, positively hedonistic for Barton, creamy richness, long and layered finish. Moderate alcohol: 13% ABV. Magnificent.

  • Drank this at our regular year end wine session at Summer Palace, Ritz-Carlton Hotel.

Dark purple in colour with notes of plums and unripe prunes. Lots of oak on the nose and palate followed by dried tobacco, coffee and toffee.

  • Media hr y empieza a abrir: alcohol y frutas negras
Nariz 1y1/2 hr: mutis nada nuevo y aroma apenas perceptible.

Some meaty and savoury notes underlying, medium/full bodied, rich flavours, moderate alcohol warm, adequate acidity, m++ length, upfront and elegant under solid strength. A classic Bordeaux!
Started fading after 2 hours in decanter, should last longer under its classe and the great vintage, the broken cork seems to hint something wrong with cellar condition. However, it kept nice balance all through even while fading, so charming.

  • Huge upside surprise given the young age, might be the best LB I've had. Poured without a decant and consumed over 3 hours, it began to open after the first glass and offered aromas of fresh cherries, blackberries, tobacco and a hint of vanilla. I would judge this more open, flavorful and fun to drink than the LB 2000 after a 2 hour decant. Plenty of tannins that are uncharacteristically smooth, somewhat tart and a long finish - it will almost certainly age well. I bought 2 cases on a whim after the rave reviews for the 2009 vintage and have been nervous to try given how backward LB tends to be...looks like I got lucky on this one. Amazing value anywhere close to the $125 I paid, and it usually goes for much less at auction.

  • Big blackcurrant and oak nose, later cedar and tobacco. Good fruit, loads of soft tannins. Well balanced and excellent length. 13pc alcohol is refreshing. • Drank from 375ml bottle. Tight, focused and brooding. This was by hour 3 already very delicious, but looks to me like worth waiting another 10 years. Dark fruit, tobacco, crisp acid that is perfectly judged and tannin that is currently more than a mouthful, but integrated as time went by. This will be wonderful, and worth the wait. For my opinion a bargain in Bordeaux

  • Pretty ruby color, great clarity, and just barely translucent. Aromas of blackberry, currants, smoke, soy, espresso, and strawberry. The tastes are espresso, beef, black pepper, soy, unripe blackberry, cigar, vanilla, cedar, currants, and sour cherry. The tannins are stout and the acidity is notable. This finishes with old world flavors and somewhat ferocious, dry tannins. This would be fantastic with rare steak or juicy lamb dish. Complex and delicious.

  • Beautiful Bordeaux full body with some purple color and dark glistening garnet and long tears. Nose of dark red fruits, with espresso, bloody steak, gentle spice box. Palate has flesh espresso roast, loads of dark fruits, pinch overextracted if thats possible in this vintage, with round tannins for the long haul spicy red currants medium finish. It has the chops to become something very exciting. Had this side by side with the 2005 and the latter seemed to have harsher tannins and require a longer time to coalesce. 93-95

  • This has the designs to be a very special wine, and possibly one of the best values of 2009. On opening, there were dark fruits; however, it was harsh and almost sharp on the palate. I then decanted for 5 hours, and everything changed. The nose evolved into a complex array of dark plum, blackberry, mocha, cinnamon, clove, a hint of green pepper, and wet river stone. The wine didn't disappoint on the palate either, but the nose dominated. Full bodied with grippy, firm tannins. Acid is perfectly balanced. There is absolutely no palatal fatigue when drinking this wine; even while this is highly enjoyable, it is going to be a classic Bordeaux in 20-30 years.

  • If you want to turn your friends on to what a Bordeaux wine is, open a bottle of this wine, leave it in a room, go out for dinner, then come back and sniff the room. There is no mistaking this gentleman's bordeaux with a nose full of earthy ground coffee, fermenting tobacco, glistening minerals and red clay. The nose is currently totally dis-connected from the tart wine, as it feels hot, dis-jointed, and is in total recluse. Don't even think about drinking this wine for another 10 years, because though your nose will be delighted, your palate will feel cheated. It dosnt take a rocketeer to see that this is going places and maybe beyond.

  • K&L's Grand Bordeaux Tasting (K&L Wine Merchants, Redwood City, California): Some barnyard notes, some heat (A-). Hot, tannic, young palate.

  • Much too early for this vintage. Wish I had a time machine because this one is going to be GREAT! I will wait till 2018 before trying again.

  • Served blind to Camille, her notes (2.5 hour decant)

    C: Dark garnet, opaque.
N: Black fruit, cassis and dark cherry, light mineral/stone, light spice, non-specific, earth, forest floor, oak present but not over the top vanilla.
P: Congruent with nose tasting notes. Very balanced, medium acid, medium tannin, lovely smooth tannins, medium+ finish. Medium EtOH. Non-obtrusive oak, but present.

Camille's Guess: Old world, Cab Sauvignon and Merlot with hint of Cab Franc, no petit verdot. (Actual blend is 70/20/10 of those, so pretty good :)
France, left bank, Pauillac vs. St. Julien, tastes like Leoville-Poyferre.
    Vintage guess = 2001 or 2003.
    Would pay $175.

  • What a polished wine. When I think of cabernet sauvignon I'll be thinking of this wine from now on. While not a first growth, at $125 this is the bargain of the vintage. Elegant, classy, rich, complex, tasty. This is all I want from the varietal. Will buy more. A little funky at first, but after an hour in the decanter this opens up to a beautiful array of dark fruits and sweet oak. This will get better, but why wait? Great now.

  • Touring J's new house (Goodman): Tasted blind. Aired in decanter for about an hour before drinking.
Appearance is clear, deep intensity, ruby colour.
Nose is clean, pronounced intensity, with aromas of juicy blackcurrants, stewed plums, some green bell peppers, and massive toasty oak. Developing nose.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, high alcohol, high tannins, full body. Flavour intensity pronounced, with forward flavours of juicy blackcurrants, stewed plums, green bell peppers, dark chocolate, earth, and spice. However, the massive oak influence mars the experience somewhat. Long finish.
I guessed a relatively young Left Bank Bordeaux.
Very good quality. Can drink now with a very long decant, but this has so much potential and would be better in maybe another 5+ years when the oak has integrated.

  • Aristocratic and austere. Dense and acidic. Very fine tannins. A very tightly packed ball of minerals, fruits and flowers waiting to unfold.

  • Dark purple with violet limb. Light nose of red fruit and leather. Had earthy funkiness when first opened by that was gone in 30 minutes. Rich dark red fruit flavors with nice acidity. Mild tannin finish with lingering fruit.

  • Gave it 2-3 hour decant but quite impenetrable. Lost my full notes but even given the early timing remember not being overly impressed. Tasted side by side with the 96 and had a similar impression of that also. My first experince of Leoville Barton so hopefully next time will be better.

  • First of a half case, just wanted to see where they're at. As expected, too early. It sat for an hour before it calmed down, once it did lovely earth notes surrounding the ripe raspberry and currant flavors. Long finish will wait years before next bottle

  • This wine is showing alot of early promise.

Deep ruby with a tinge of purple on the rim. The nose is of juicy black currants, stewed plums, mocha and sweet cherry oak. The flavours on the palate are of bruised plums, dusty oak and tar. At the moment, the acidity and tannins seem to be competing for the upper hand, but none of the components stand out, which shows excellent aging potential.

  • On the nose there's pen ink, black currants, wet iron, dark chocolate & dark berries ~ On the palate it's big, mouth filling & plush with silky tannins & smokey notes, a bit vegetal, anise, leather & dark fruits ~ Outstanding. With a few more years in the bottle this will develop into a classic

  • Tasted at the New York Wine experience 2013
Dark color, purple rim; classic Bordeaux nose: dark berries and fruit, polished tannins, harmonious structure, excellent balance.
    Should eventually rate 93/95 points.
    Should buy some of this

  • Popped, poured into a decanter and followed over a period of three hours. The wine was dark purple in colour. It offered violet, cherry, lingonberry, black currant, bell pepper, graphite, dark chocolate and cocoa on the nose. On the palate the wine showed lemon, cherry, lingonberry, black currant, a hint of bell pepper, cedar, coffee, cocoa, graphite and mineral notes, paired with medium-plus to high lively acidity, high ripe, well-integrated tannin and a good, slightly cream mouthfeel. The medium- to full-bodied, tight, dense, structured wine was polished and had incredible length. The acidity seemed a little artificial, was not fully integrated and seemed surprisingly high in the context of the vintage, but other than that the wine was seamless and balanced. A great wine; I will stock up. 93 - 96.

  • Decanted for two hours. Black, violet....then the end is of a thin ruby distinction. Bakers' chocolate, blackberries, rose petals and lilac. Velvety and fine grained tannins that add polish to the full-bodied palate. The mid-palate is standing proudly. Exemplifies Barton and is really a mini-'03. A long finish of pipe tobacco and wet earth. Absolutely classic. Drink 2020-.

  • Primary, but really quite approachable. Bottle opened for 6 hrs and double decanted for 2 more. This is a fabulous Barton, with dark purple / inky color, and alluring aromas of black fruits, cassis, spice, and some minerals. The structure of the wine is solid and incredibly balanced, silky tannins and loads of jammy blackberry, a bit of earthiness and tobacco scent. Don't think the wine has opened up fully, but its undeniable there are great substance in it and its primed for greatness with time on its side.

  • From 375ml bottle. Amazing nose started with earth, blackcurrant, mocha then followed by menthol, tobacco, graphite, savory note and perfume. Medium bodied. Palate was dominated by high acidity with fine tannins hidden in the back. Smooth medium finish. Very approachable now but it could just be an illusion. Elegent and fine.

  • Hint of mocha on the nose, very fine and elegant palate with a long finish. Not a typcial Barton in my opinion but still has years of development ahead. Lovely and surprisingly approachable now.

  • 2009 Bordeaux arrivage tasting (Baur au Lac Hotel, Zurich): This was surprising as it was really different from all the other 2009 Bordeaux tasted today.

Sunday roast, bacon, lemon, this needs a lot of time but could become very very good in 10 years time.

  • Grande Bordeaux Tasting, 2009 (Harbour Grand Kowloon, Hong Kong): More acidic than the Langoa Barton although a little more closed on the fruit. Very nice though - a good solid claret in the making.

  • K&L Best of Bordeaux Tasting 17-Mar-2012: Dark intense purple color; Nail polish, intense dark fruit, slightly sweet nose; intense layered fruit (blackberry and blueberry-pomegranate) with slightly chewy dried old herbs, stony mineral, and light smoke palate; medium plus finish with balance of same elements and touch of bitterness. Body medium plus, acid medium, tannin medium plus. Very nice wine.

  • Blending 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22.5% Merlot and a pinch of Cabernet Franc, this powerful, full bodied, concentrated fresh wine is packed with cedar wood, oak, cassis, minerals and fresh, juicy blackberries. Tannic and refined, buyers will need to forget about this wine for two decades before it’s ready to drink.

  • 2009 Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux Tasting; 1/27/2012-1/31/2012 (Sheraton Hotel & Towers, Chicago, Illinois): 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot and just a touch of Cabernet Franc thrown in. I only had the 2001 and 2005 at a similar age. This was far better than the 2001 and approached the classic 2005. Dark purple color. A very deep wine with powerful tannins. Notes of vanilla, oak and black fruit which was mostly hidden now. Lipsmackingly dry finish. Full bodied. The best St. Julien wine at the tasting. 94-97 points.

  • I am a huge LB fan and this is my favorite since 1995. It seems like this is going to be fairly approachable young....I would say ten years in the bottle and the rest is preference. It's a bit like 2003 but throttled back on the ripeness a good bit. There's a lot of specialness hiding in this bottle.

  • UGC Bordeaux (Sheraton Hotel - Chicago IL): Another wine where opinions diverged widely. I liked the wine's elegance, complexity and outstanding minerality. Floral start with great spice and black fruit. Lots of black fruit on palate with same spice flavors. Accessible today but with lots of stuffing and power.

  • UGC 2009 Bordeaux Tasting (Sheraton Chicago Hotel & Towers): Nice nose - mix of perfumey aroma and dark & red fruits. Palate not giving up much at this point, though, due to tannins.

  • 2009 UGC Bordeaux Tasting (San Francisco): Always one of my favorites. Notable minerality on the nose with great fruit, less smoky than the poyferre but no less complex; big, ripe fruit but still balanced, velvety mouthfeel; medium-length finish. Excellent. 93-95.

  • Has a very nice nose - great balance between ripe fruit and mineral and classic varietal character. On the palate, a little more tannic than a lot of the wines tasted today, but clearly has the fruit to back it up. Doesn't rely on oak for the spice; not showing a lot of minerality now, but I predict it will come out in time. One of the best wines here today. 94-96.

  • UGC 2009 Bordeaux Tasting - NYC - 1.25.12 (New York City): Excellent. The best way to describe this wine is complete. Structured and voluminous but not embryonic. Excellent mouthfeel even superseding the Langoa. Unfortunately, this bottle is pretty shut-down, especially on the nose which isn’t budging much. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is a banner year for Barton (94-97+?)

  • Union Des Grands Crus de Bordeaux Tasting (New York, NY): Nose: Black Cherry, Currant, Slight Florals, Apricot, Tar and Spice. Palate: Blueberry, Blackberry, and Raspberry notes. Layered dark fruits. Tobacco, Earth, Tar and some Licorice. Finish: Very dark finish with cassis and tar notes. The tannins clamp down so hard it is unreal. This is the most tannic young wine I have ever tasted.

  • 2009 Bordeaux Union des Grands Crus Tasting (The Doral Resort & Spa, Miami, FL): Surprisingly elegant for a young L-B, with a terrific sense of balance, yet still with concentration and power and lifting acidity. Very smooth tannins gave this a nice approachability. Fabulous wine and one of my favorites of the tasting.

  • 2009 Bordeaux at UGC San Francisco (Bentley Reserve Building, San Francisco): We have serious stuff here. Nice combination of power and elegance. Swirling depth and complexity with black currant, plums, wet earth, and cedar. Long dry finish. Great structure and concentration yet everything was in balance. Probably the most backward of the reds I tasted but still in a generous mood presently. Outstanding.

  • Dark, bold color. The nose shows fig, sweet soil, with red & black fruits. Silky mouthfeel, showing good weight...lots of plum and cherry on the palate with everything very well in balance. Medium plus finish. One of the top showings at the UGC in Los Angeles. 93-95+

  • Union des Grands Grus 2009 Bordeaux Tasting (Petersen Automotive Museum, Los Angeles): Beautiful, rich nose, showing cassis, lead pencil shavings, tar, black cherry, black plum, and toasted oak. More lead pencil on the velvety palate, along with cedar, asphalt, black currant, earth, and lots of black cherry and black plum. A ton of gripping tannins, with a long finish ending with notes of black cherry and lead pencil. Another great Barton. Fantastic.

  • Bordeaux-Mostly 2009 Reds (K&L Wines, San Francisco): Even darker than the Langoa. Sweaty, tannic nose. As dense as its stablemate but not as glossy or lush. Powerful acids, more gripping tannins. Greener flavors, more closed and finer than the Langoa. Clearly one for the long haul. Classic Claret. Excellent.
