  • decanted off sediment 30 minutes before drinking. Super tight still. An hour later some classic Bordeaux style notes start to emerge with sour cherry, wood, and a bit of leather. Somehow the old vines makes this bottle still a baby.

  • Still aging at a glacial pace, but no less enjoyable! One left and I think (know) my impatience and absence of will power will easily win out over my desire to see what this is like at age 20 or older. The more bottles I open from my stash of Bedrock reds from the early years the more I'm convinced they will drink well for a second and maybe a third generation.

  • Gorgeous wine drinking at a good place. Cassis, herbs, cedar and tobacco leaf. Old school wine, but with plump, bright fruit. Quite drinkable with a bit of a decant, but the tannins are still noticeable. This could go for another decade... at least.

  • I just received some Bedrock '19 Sonoma Cabs, so I wanted to check in on one of their early experiments with Bordeaux varietals. I'm not that I would call this as a BDX blend if tasted blind, as it shows more the mark of the winemaker than the varietals. It is unmistakably a Bedrock wine. Rich and complex, but balanced, and very much transparent to its terroir. The nose shows a lot of mineral and blackberry, with savory herbal notes of eucalyptus and bay leaf, and some anise. It still has a lot of grip with a chewy midpalate and some mild but rustic tannins on the back end, but I think this is in a pretty good place in terms of its drinking window. I believe Morgan called this an "old school CA cab" and I don't doubt that this will last a while. But it is still a rather forward wine, and I'm not sure it's made in the same style as those classic '70s cabs (which, admittedly, this whippersnapper never drank in their relative youth). Delicious, and very easy drinking, as this bottle did not last the night.

  • Deep garnet showing no sign of aging. Nose of black raspberry and black plum, hint of ash. Palate is lighter than expected with a bit of greenness and notes of tray cherry, red currants. Finish is long and smooth with mellow tannins and a “Sweet Tart” element. Still expresses as youthful.

  • No rush on this, but it opened up quickly, and had a nice soft/plushness to it (probably thanks to the Merlot), but the cab adds some structure.  Violets and plums. Tannins are present but not harsh.  Alex said chalky, which is spot on.  Really good wine, but simply outshined by the rest of the lineup, which included 09 Cuvee Caritas, 11 Pucinni zin, 07 Bedrock Heritage, and 12 Weil #3.

  • Brief impressions:

Plummy dark fruits, cherry fruits, mint, eucalyptus, astringent tannins. In the middle of transitioning into showing more of a tertiary profile, could use a few more years to settle in and should show beautifully. If drinking now, food definitely helps in taming the tannins.

  • Opens very nicely with an hour of air, revealing a mature Cab/Merlot/Petit Verdot blend that is medium-to-full bodied and delicious without being overtly fruity.

Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Comment

  • Best with an hour of air, as it takes a bit for the bouquet to open up. The tannins are fairly well resolved at this point so, like most of the Cali ‘08s I’ve had in the past year, I’d say drink up vs. continue to hold.

  • This wine was in a great place at PnP. Medium purple in color with a very slight bit of bricking. Very floral on the nose with violets and lavender. As always, hard to keep my nose out of the glass when drinking a Bedrock. On the palate, this is very round with the tannins well integrated. Blind it would be difficult to peg as a cab blend - more like a 'zin on pillows' due to it being so soft, which is probably due to the 32% merlot. Really nice wine that's drinking well but should hold for some time.

  • I should have decanted this, but I didn't. This started out light and racy. It built with time and became a rich Bordeaux blend with some mocha, tobacco and berries. I'm still trying to figure out Bedrock reds, but this does not disappoint.

  • PnD let 2/3 of the bottle let air for 2hrs. Dark dense purple with plum to clear rim. Cassis sage and oak on the nose. Medium weight with fairly polished tannins with a touch of stemmy grip. Plum fig cassis tobacco leather and dark chocolate on the palate. Drying slightly boozy over ripe finish. The colour looks young the palate tastes like it is on the way down. I wish I opened this a year ago.

Day 2. At first it seemed to have faded. Then with food it opened up and gained some depth and integration while losing some of the drying notes. +1 pt. Drink up.

  • Shafer Hillside (12 & 91), Guigal La Turque, Bedrock, Fonseca ++ (Our Home): I thought this bottle rocked. I am not sure how much air Chris gave it but I think it had a couple few hours by the time we drank it. Purple in color. I assume this is a Bordeaux blend? Cassis, dark cherries, cigar tobacco and slight licorice notes. On the palate, this is still young. Medium tannins. vibrant fruit - dark cherry, some cassis along with a dark chocolate note. Long finish. This got better all night long. Drinking well now, but no hurry at all.

  • This bottle tasted like it was a barrel sample even though it was 8 years old. I won't open my remaining bottle for at least 3 more years. A serious wine that has lots of upside for sure.

  • Wonderful one of bottle of Sonoma Bordeaux Blend wine. Wasn't sure how long to keep it. Probably should have let it go another five years.

  • Four+ years after my first bottle, it has settled down. The highlight is certainly the nose, with sweet and subtle perfumes of oak and a touch of dried herbs. The palate is light+, medium acidity with a big-time milk chocolate covered berries thing going on. The finish is not particularly long but has a solid amount of tannin all things considered.

This was actually best by itself as an aperitif. It did not hold up to a sous vide flank steak. I have a bottle left and will consume it with a more subtle dish next time.

  • Popped and poured. Deep dark purple color. Rich and darkly fruited on the palate but balanced by some rocky flavors. Noticeable but not unpleasant tannic spine suggest that this one can age for at least five years. Overall a tasty wine.

  • Pop and pour, consumed over 4 hours. Nose: Highly expressive, dominated by black berry and blueberry, with candy notes - marzipan, dark flowers, and hints of black pepper and mint - an amazing smorgasbord of scents. Palate: Full bodied, great balance, dark fruit attack, great mid-palate density, plenty of acid to balance the up-front fruit, earthy tones appear mid-palate, nice spice driven kick in the back-end. Finish: Lengthy sense of spicy dark fruit which coats the mouth and lingers for 60+ seconds. This is my last of four bottles and appears to just be coming into it's prime drinking window, certainly wish I had a few more to see how this evolves over the next few years as I suspect this hasn't peaked yet.

  • Tasted six months after first accessing by Coravin, this was perfectly preserved, with consistent notes. The fruit is ripe and sweet, without being over the top; the tannin doesn't seem to take over the way it did when last tasted though. Perfectly enjoyable, but I do palpably feel that while I still enjoy this style of wine once in a while, it's an increasingly rare craving that I have.

  • Rich and ripe, with initial toasted coconut flavors that fade to vanilla, with structure, deep red cherry, fennel seed

  • Still young tannins, but soft and smooth, with hurbs, leather and oak. Very nice blend with the merlot in front palette.

  • This seems very young still, with some prominent french oak on the nose and palate and boisterous young fruit throughout. Very good depth and concentration. Unfortunately, this did not last very long with the crowd I was with so it didn't get a chance to evolve much with air. Still, I think this has the makeup to improve for years to come, maybe 5 or 10 years or more.

  • Starts to show well after about a 4 hour decant. More Merlot oriented at this point. Savory, herb flavors yield a subtle, complex wine. Tannins are sweet and tame. Probably can go a bit longer though I am not sure you'll see much improvement.

  • This wine was not as impressive as it has been -- not sure if this is a case of bottle variation or if the wine is on the decline.

Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Comment

  • The nose shows dusty black fruits with some red fruit undertones. Entry is sweet and ripe, but soon after, the tannins clamp down hard and create a strong pucker in the mouth. More modern than I expected, this tastes to me like a Sonoma answer to less opulent vintages of Rivers-Marie cab. Needs time but a bargain at the $40 price tag; alas, I don't think Morgan makes this anymore. 91 with potential for upside as the tannins resolve.

  • Consumed over 2 days (vacuvined), note from day 2. Nose: Medium expressiveness, sweet tobacco, menthol, raspberry, and black cherry. Palate: Medium-full bodied, tobacco and pomegranate attack, spicy mid-palate presence, spice joins sweet red fruit through the back-end. Finish: Medium length finish with a powerful start that fades quickly but lingers for 30+ seconds.

My third of four bottles, others consumed in 2011 and 2012, and looking back this example doesn't quite measure up to the first two.

  • Gorgeous wine, but still a bit tight. Will wait 3 years for last bottle.

  • Great dark fruit nose. Tannins are soft and silken. Dark chocolate. Long finish -- great acidity -- drinking great right now.

  • PnD. Deep dark bright purple saturated from core to rim. Great on the nose with aromas of blackfruit balanced oak and a touch of herbs. Medium weight was expecting more body with ripe tannins. More expressive on the nose than the palate but still delicious with black fruits tobacco dark chocolate and herbs. Nice balancing acidity on the lingering red fruit finish. Hands off the last bottle for a couple of years.

  • Decanted approx. 30 min ... This is my third of four bottles, all sampled, one per year, since 2012. I'm still not entirely sure what I think of this one.

Blue-black fruit is there to open, but the tannins are really, really firm--to the point of intrusion--and there's still a good bit heat, despite the age and decant. Some earth and just a hint of spice is the rest of the flavor profile, which seems mostly two-note to me (fruit+grip).

This is far from bad, and there's some good stuff going on, but I'm just not loving the blend. Maybe next year?

  • 59% Cabernet, 32% Merlot, 9% Petite Verdot; 4 barrels (100 cases) made.

Color: inky, dark purple core -> deep/dark ruby rim; quite extracted. Reticent bouquet that, after a lot of coaxing, finally revealed some black cherry, dark chocolate and a little peat moss. Palate is pretty full-bodied with some vanilla, cassis and sweet cherry fruit but showing a serious, serious, chalky tannic spine; I'd have to disagree with those saying this is ready for prime-time drinking--even the half bottle left on night #2 was pretty stern! However, that being said, I don't think the tannins are excessive considering the fruit level, just give this a few more years to sleep.

  • Much calmed down since the last bottle a couple years ago. Structure still very present but starting to integrate nicely. Smooth dark fruits and pure cassis on the nose. The high percentage of Merlot adds a nice dimension on the midpalate.

  • Deep garnet color leads to a somewhat closed nose of dark fruit with a hint of dark chocolate. The full body shows flavors of dark berry, currant, with hints of dark chocolate, bell pepper, and tobacco. The finish lasts 45 seconds. While certainly enjoyable now, I expect this will improve with additional bottle aging.

  • Splash decant and pour through Vinturi ... This has come a long way in a year. It's now lush and full, with plush opening notes and a firm tannic backbone that lends structure. A little hot on the nose, the palate is dense and chewy. Good acid, balances bright fruit. A classic bordeaux profile, and a nice balance between Old and New World styles.

I'm guessing this will continue to improve for at least the next five years. Had half a case, have now consumed two, and plan to hold the rest for 2015 and beyond.

  • Wines over the 4th weekend- Bedrock, AO, Bevan; 7/3/2013-7/7/2013: Outstanding wine. Still young and needs some time though. The nose is deep with black cherries, anise, wood, black raspberries and leather. Full bodied. Drinks very well. Lots of depth, but needs air/time to unwind. Delicious.

  • Great backbone. Infanticide on my part, but worth it.

  • I disagree with the multiple comments about this being too young. Drinking beautifully right now. Easily a very good Bordeaux in a blind setting. Highly impressed, again, with this effort by Morgan.

  • Painfully young, but opened quite a bit with decanting. Dead ringer for a young Leoville Barton.

  • Very nice nose on this. I thought the palate was a bit weaker although still quite nice. The nose has more depth; cigars, cassis, cherries and leather. On the palate, perhaps some age will flesh this out. Nice lush texture. Not much complexity but good fruit. Overall quite good though.

  • Wow. Dark purple color, abundant dark fruit with leather, coffee, and dark chocolate for good measure. The only downside is that he wouldn't sell us any more of the stuff. Drinking beautifully now.

  • I have to say that from the first promising sip the concept of infanticide came to mind! Won't touch the next bottle about 5-10 years!

  • First bottle was about 14 months ago and was really way too young. PnP/Vinturi on this one. It has evolved from the first bottle. The merlot sweetness is evident and the spice is popping out. Oak and tannins are there too, but not so much to take away from the enjoyment. There's almost a little zin style to this blend. Actually approachable now, if you like the younger fruit style.
Day 2 update, weird, but it was better on day 1 more lively.

1 person found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comment

  • Not sure about the comments that this wine needs a lot more time. I thought it was ready to go with a short decant. Deep purple color. Flavors really influenced by Merlot it seems to me. Fine dusty tannins that integrate well. Full and plush on the palate. Red and black fruits with vanilla and some spice. Medium finish.

1 person found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comment

  • Decanted approx. 2 hour ... Even with a decent decant this one seemed pretty young. Very dry and tannic. Some spice and good acidity, some cranberry fruit notes. Short finish. Actually a bit simpler, overall, than I was expecting. Not sure how it will develop with age. Good, but not great, especially at this price point.

UPDATE (day 2) ... Smoothed out considerably after a being open 24 hours, with a more lush profile. Definitely could use more bottle age. Will hold onto the rest of bottles for at least a year or two.

  • Warm vanilla bean, baking spice, cherry, soft plum, red currant. Excellent stuff. Great... another mailing list I now MUST join! If scoring, 91-93. Will certainly evolve, but it's pretty darn tasty right now.

  • This needs a LOT of time! Nice nose of black cherries a little earth and blackberries. In the mouth the wine itself is not giving off much, Very tight with the tannins outclassing any fruit right now.

  • 14.5% alcohol. A traditional claret blend of 59% Cab, 32% Merlot and 9% Petit Verdot from Bedrock Vineyard in Sonoma Valley. Dark ruby red. Expressive claret aromas. Black cherry predominates the palate with just a touch of claret "greenness." Nice balance and long finish.

This wine has evolved nicely over the past several months and is much richer, deeper and smoother. More open as well. This will continue to improve for several more years.

  • VERY tight...and this was after 3 hours of decanting. Agree with earlier comments - needs several more years cellared. By hour 5, it was [barely] starting to show. Knowing the tail end experience, this wine could be incredible future years.

  • Needs more time but wow! Tannins are think but after decanting and two hours, this wine started showing its potential. Strong ripe black fruit and very balanced. Looking forward to trying in the years to come.

  • Popped and poured on a Saturday night, then finished on Monday with grilled ribeyes. Black cherry and blackberry, along with some tobacco taste. Nice wine, but think it definitely needs more time.

  • Popped and poured, probably a mistake, the wine came across as very tight, with tanin out weighing the fruit

  • Note..this wine was alive for 5 days in the bottle. Then I remembered it and killed it. The nose has lots of ripe bright fruits, some men's cologne, and flowers. The palate is medium to full bodied with more ripe red fruits, some blackberries, a little beef and some oak. Solid and of great length. This needs time to loosen up.

  • Nice Bordeaux blend with fruit forward style.

  • Tasted with five very informed wine friends. All had the Bedrock#2 in their top picks over 8 other wines. Deep red-ruby in the glass and great flavors on the palate. I double decanted the wine before serving. Lots of age left in this wine.

  • Amazing dark fruit framed by stout tannin that softened after a few hours. Nose of vanilla, creme de cassis and blackberry. Palate is mostly round with a couple of sharp edges that will soften with time. This is drinking well now with some air, but will improve for the next 5 years easily.

  • Consumed over 2 days, note from day 2. Nose: Expressive scents of dark fruit - black berry and cassis, eucalyptus and dark florals. Palate: Medium-full bodied, nice balance and mouth-feel, beautiful fruit flavors - mostly dark with some undertones of red, really opend opened up the second day, nice spicy kick - licorice and eucalyptus in the back-end. Finish: Medium-plus length finish of spicy dark fruit. A really nice wine that will benefit from a few more years.

  • Tasted over 3 days. Initially PnP as well as Vinturi, then vacuumed and retasted on days 2 and 3. Consistently opened up with air and could/should lay down another few years. Dark plum color with ruby rim. Nose of crushed blueberry, cinnamon, caramel and faint forest floor. Palate is rich and lush with black currant, mocha, pomegranate juice. Evident tannins lead to a medium length drying finish. Acids are present but balanced. A big bruiser of a wine that drinks well with air but will continue to improve.

  • An hour in glass decant. Big wine with lots of complexity. Continued to improve over the evening. Will wait awhile before drinking remaining bottle.

  • In the middle ground for Napa cab, not over the top but certainly not understated or "old-school". Very young, will let remaining bottles rest for a few years minimum.

  • Big and not ready yet. Decanted for three hours and that barely made this remotely approachable. All of the stuff is there, just a little disjointed right now.

  • Consumed over 2 days, note from day 2. Nose: Medium expressiveness, blackberry, blue berry, licorice and dark flowers. Palate: Medium-full bodied, great balance, blackberry jam up front with gritty chocolate flavors showing up in the mid-palate and through the back end. Finish: Medium plus length sense of chocolate and dark fruit. Didn't take formal notes on day 1, but this was drinking noticeably better on day 2 - an indication of a bright future for this wine.

  • Opened this up having forgotten I opened a bottle just a week ago. This needs more time. Pop and pour, tasted, and then re-corked. Tasted the following day. Good rich fruit. Showing a bit of heat. Chocolate notes along with cherry and dried herbs. Somewhat disjointed. This needs time for the tannins to settle down and have all the elements come together.

  • Decanted for 7 hours. On initial opening this was incredibily wound up. The nose was totally unexpressive and the tannins were grippy like a barrel sample. Once this had time in the decanter it really started to show its stuff. The nose is very pure with cassis and black cherry. Also get thyme and some cigar box. The palate is explosive with red fruit but in no way does it feel cloying. Nice beam of acidity adds great balance. As others have said the tannins are very fine but not rounded at this point. Needs significant time in the bottle however the potential and structure is there is spades. A wonderful first effort on the Bordeaux blend and my favorite Bedrock to date.

  • 59% Cab, 32% Merlot, 9% Petit Verdot. Popped and poured. Initial impression was a bit disjointed with a mildly harsh tannic backbone. After about an hour, the tannic backbone resolved. I have a couple of bottles left and will give them a year or two to evolve. At this point, a very enjoyable wine, but without much Cab/Merlot typicity.

  • Pop and pour and followed over four hours; re-corked and checked in on the following day. Dark black and red fruits; shows a pepper and spicy element. A bit disjointed. Has some good stuffing but needs time to settle down and come together.

  • 45 minute decant. Great fruit, lots of oak, but fluff the pillows and pull the blankets up high. These really need their rest for awhile.

Update: Day 2 is pretty stupendous. The deepth of spice that has emerged is fantastic. The oak has moved into the background. These will be killer down the road.

  • Another "day of delivery" sacrifice, I wanted to try this one to get a sense of it's styling.

Pop/pour. On the nose, aromatic but tough for me to place. This isn't a big fruit bomb sort of nose. Pure red fruits, a hint of cassis and spice and an impression of perfume that borders on floral. After time, the floral fades to be replaced by the licorice and tobacco JR describes in his IWC note. On the palate, it's a youngster and as a result fairly tight. Initially on opening, this presents as something of a "country blend"...pleasant but perhaps not very serious. With just a short amount of air, that impression gets tossed, as the structure and overall character of this wine become more evident. Generally balanced, with a purity of fruit that seems to be the hallmark of this producer. Very old school with oak in check. Also old school - the tannins. While they come across as fine grained, they are also quite potent at present (footnote - they do settle down a bit the more air this gets). This wine is unapologetic in saying "wait for me to develop, I'm not ready now". I think this could turn into something quite special with the appropriate amount of bottle age. Overall, a subtle wine straddling the line between feminine and masculine styles. This reminds me of a good cab from the 80's. Score based on perceived potential, and it could be understated depending on how this evolves.

For folks reticent about opening a bottle before its ready, put this one away in the cellar for at least 5 years, maybe more. That said, it's an eclectic and satisfying experiment for current drinking, and its evolution in the glass from the pop to 45 minutes later is impressive.

  • Dark red color. French oak, cigar box, dark berry on the nose. At first tight, then full of dark fruit, later very complex, medium+ acidity, full mouth feel, medium-long finish.

I just couldn't help myself and opened a bottle from the just-delivered shipment. There is always a chance of bottle shock, but I felt like this wine could perform under such challenging circumstances.
