  • Giuseppe Rinaldi at Chi Siamo, NYC (Ch Siamo, NYC): Giuseppe Rinaldi at Chi Siamo, NYC

Double decanted in the AM and drunk over dinner
A cooler nose, more nuanced and lifted nose with a fleeting beauty. Rose violet black licorice, spice, and tar. On the palate it has a weightless intensity and sense of lift I love in the 08 vintage. Weightless power, push you over with a featherr stuff. This has some mystery and nuance. I love this bottle. Opened quite a bit with more air time. this is delicious already and destined for greatness.
    Tannins.

  • An incredible, deep, complex, sweet and youthful expression of Barolo. Roses, tar, rose hip, pomegranate, blueberry infused goodness. Elegant, profound, pure and sublime. Like an outstanding Chambolle 1er Cru, may be even approaching the Grand Cru level.
The levels of ripeness, freshness, purity and depth are off the charts here. On the palate it is the unimaginably velvety textures of the finest grained tannins that really draws your attention. The acids while creating a firm spine, are unbelievably harmonious and suave as well.
Young but ready to go the wine has dozens of years ahead. Some of the best feminine Barolos I have had the pleasure to drink.

  • Conterno vs Rinaldi; 11/4/2023-11/5/2023: The '08 Brunate is a super sweet, exotic, perfumed expression of Nebbiolo. The combination of the Rinaldi style and the '08 vintage produced a wine that is almost too sweet and giving, something that was apparent tasting this next to the '08 Monfortino but not when I've had a glass of this wine on its own. On initial pour, the '08 Brunate was mindblowing and seemed to be the wine of the night, but we frankly tired of it by the end of the evening, while the Monfortino continued to improve in the glass.

The nose was super perfumed and exotic, with the distinct combination of blue, purple, and red fruit and floral tones I find in many vintages of Rinaldi Brunate, and in the '08 I also found more exotic notes of orange peel and other tropical fruits. On the palate, the same hard-candy like red, blue, and purple fruit and floral tones appeared along with orange peel and roasted meats. It is such a dense wine flavor-wise, but it's all packed into a medium to light bodied frame, with no perception at all of tannins.

  • an amazing expression of sublime elegance
    still has some tannin backbone
but has the demure cherry notes dancing in and out that I live for
different than burgundy cherries but equally as wonderful
lucky to drink this with Sharma and Randy at Piccolo Strada in NYC

  • Really really good wine. So light and yet lot’s of power. Reminds me a lot of good Burgundy. Just with a Nebbiolo twist.

  • A very good bottle and a nice wine. We didn't give it enough time to unfurl, therefore somewhat less inspiring than previous bottles.

  • Giuseppe Rinaldi in Tucson, or Tom comes to Tucson Night 1 (Ciabot Tucker): Double decanted in the AM and drunk over dinner

A fantastic nose. Deep and cooler than the previous wines. Roses, violet, beautiful deep Brunate fruit. Thi is like lookin into a deep bottomless pool of water. Poised and harmonious. Intense yet weightless. This is the iron fist in a velvet glove. Finishes with firm fine tannins. This is still for me years away form a glorious peak. Fantastic. I love the wine and is for me further proof of the greatness of the vintage. 97+

  • Beppe's 2008 Brunate is gorgeous with soaring aromatics of cherry, rose, and lavender. Midweight, almost medium light, in body with vibrant acidity and regal tannins that carry red fruit and floral flavors. Absolutely killer.

  • The most disappointing bottle so far. I thought it was mildly corked but the others at the table did not agree. It was an off bottle as I have had this wine many times and tonight’s bottle did not come close to what I know this wine can be. No rating as an off bottle. 😩

  • Slow oxed for 7 hours then into a decanter for a couple of more. It got very dark between slow ox and decanter. The nose was just screaming roses and tar, which seems to be the MO with this wine. It's still in it's early drinking window but WOW how this evolved over the course of dinner. Just got better and better and can't imagine how good this will get in the next 5-7-10 years. 96-97

  • Another incredible showing of this top-notch Barolo. I would probably put this into my all-time top 10 Barolos…
Deep dark red and red fruit, layere of complexity, red berries, tar, menthol, a touch of licorice, some graphite, floral notes too/violets, also some balsamic notes, there is something everytime I taste it. It‘s medium-full bodied, with excellent mid-palate persistence and weight, it has high acidity and medium-high tannin that is exceptionally silky and perfect.
    Superb length.
A deep, structured but also beuautifully aromatic Barolo of the very highest level. This is an epic bottle that has many many years ahead. Wow. (98+)

  • Barolo 2008 (My place): Complex, lovely nose of a Barolo entering maturity. Red fruit, but also deep earthy tones. On the palate it is balanced and evolves nicely with the typical earthy notes and power of the Brunate. Tannins are present and firm but not disturbing. Great wine.
On day 2 it developed wonderful floral notes on the nose and on the palate it became a little lighter (maybe less powerful is a better description).

  • Happy New Year everyone!
As part of our annual New Year’s tradition Scott and I decided to open something special to kick things off. This year we decided to do a side-by-side tasting with none other than Giuseppe Rinaldi Barolo’s 2007 and 2008 Brunate Le Coste

Both were slow ox’d since early morning prior to serving at night. I will say that the perfume from the 08 filled up the room on open ….like a garden of roses (I brought 08, Scott 07)

    My amateur TN as follows:

2007- beautiful perfume - very floral, rose garden dominates. You can smell some of the alcohol (indicator of the warmer vintage?) but it wasn’t intrusive by any means. Also a hint of secondary note (mushroom) coming into the foray to compliment the florality. Very interesting. Some hint of liquorice and tar as well but not in abundance

Palate wise, still a hint of tannin but very elegant entry overall. Good long finish (45 seconds). I think this one is in a good drinking window.

2008- see previous note above re perfume. Intoxicating. This did not have the alcohol nose on it. Rather again very floral but the contrast here was the larger presence of menthol, pine, and Christmas baking spices blending in. What a beautiful combo.

The palate indicates there is still a lot of youth on this one. Very long finish (1min +). I think this can age for a long time- probably at the very beginning of the drinking window. No presence of secondary notes here.

Best part was after consuming 750ml of wine, it powered me through a workout the next morning 🏋️‍♂️ 😂.

  • I opened a bottle at 7:00 am to slow oxed. You could just smell the cherries. Overwhelming and I’ve never had that upon opening. Put int a decanter 11 hours later and the cherries are still there. Wow the first sip is amazing cherries surrounded by red fruits tar a bit of cloves and cinnamon. It’s been a few years since last bottle and this is still got many years left. One of the best wines of the year. My wife couldn’t stop drinking it, which is very unusual. Just got better and better as it sat in the glass. This is exactly why we cellar wines. Can’t wait for the next one. Fantastic.

  • I've drank a few from the same original case and this one was a sub par bottle. Was not awful but just too dark, too mature for what I recall this wine to be. The cork was awfully short (like the shortest cork I have ever seen on a top class Barolo - perhaps tied with Cappellano) and hard not to think the cork was possibly at fault. I dont recall such short corks on more recent Rinaldi wines so hopefully they have upped their spend in that department.
I could have rated this like 90-91 but I know that would not be accurate reflection of a perfect bottle. NR

  • Spectacular nose
    Tannins require a decant
Beautiful fruit sweet Cherries then tart then sour cherries as the night progressed
Reminded me of the 1982 Gaja barbaresco but more tannins and less integrated
    Early in its drinking window

  • (at Orto - Baltimore) Blood ruby color. Rustic yet refined nose that took a few minutes to settle. Rubber tire, rose, burning embers and cinnamon. Medium bodied and still very coiled. Great potential here. (95+)

  • nose - fig and dates, dried fruits, intense and rich and not at all berry driven
mouth - sappy/concentrated, very barolo, tar and dates, intense and long, with lots of dried fruit character. sexy, dark. The King of wines , maybe, but the wine of kings , I get it.

  • The ‘08 Brunate is a stunning wine that remains very youthful today. It is a particularly sweet, exotic, and finessed vintage of Brunate. The aromatics were very cool in tone with menthol, dark red and purple fruit tones, roses, minerality, and tobacco, with the key feature being the hard candy like sweetness of the fruit profile. On the palate, the ‘08 drinks with the ease of water with very finessed and already integrated tannins. I found very sweet, candied red and blue fruit and inner floral tones, ending on blue and purple tones with a hint of spice. At this point, it impressed most for its sweetness and textural finesse. The wine was best shortly after opening, becoming a bit less expressive later in the day, so I think this needs a lot of time before it hits the early part of its drinking window.

Next to the ‘06 Brunate, the ‘08 showed more finesse with finer grained and better integrated tannins, but lacked some of the complexity and intrigue (at least at this point in its life) the ‘06 showed.

  • Soaring aromatics include sweet cherry, rose, tar, and lavender. Midweight with a velvet texture and vibrant acidity carrying cherry and floral flavors. Overshadowed by 2006 and to a lesser extent 2007, 2008 is a bit of an insider's vintage in which Rinaldi produced a killer Brunate.

  • Probably my WOTN, just edging over the Celestins. Classic Rinaldi pure red fruits that achieves depth and complexity without being too light. I was surprised how open and approachable this was for an 08 but you could sense that there is still a lot to come here. Recalling a Rinaldi dinner we had in New Year just over a year ago, some of the newer vintages like 05 and 07 didn’t have same concentration as this 08.

  • Doubled decanted in the morning and started serving at night. Rose petal, tar, cherry and graphite on the nose. So pure, feminine and delicate on the palate with good depth and complexity. A superb barolo for burgundy lover.

  • Rinaldi is always charming and this is no exception. This is about elegance, not too complex still however very approachable. long, maturing but still a way to go. Drinking well already, and I struggle to resist these already. Classic in its appearance, some salty element which I adore.

There is something Burgundy about this, still the palate hints about Piemonte. Great!

  • Rinaldi provning Auzone, vin 4:

  • This is a great wine that is both challenging with dark minerals and firm tannins and elegant with flowers and beautiful balsamic notes. The nose is dense with notes of oil pain, leather and dark fruit but also some floral notes appear after a while. The palate continues in the same style initially but then a beautiful acidity changes the character and despite the rather tannic structure we get a fresh energetic finish with some red fruit notes from wild strawberries.
The wine improved significantly day two and if I had more bottles I would keep them.

  • Dekantert 2 t. Intens nese med moreller, nyper, tobakk, roser og skogbunn. I munnen er det mye syre, tannin og mørk frukt, men dette er særs pent balansert og rent. Struktur med finesse. Mineralsk ryggrad. Ung, men åpen. Lang. Dette er en av de beste Rinaldi jeg har smakt fra 2000-tallet.

  • WOW, just wow! PnP and followed over several hours. This is as good as Barolo gets! Incredible floral notes plus wonderful and very fine red fruit aromas. A bit of tar. Mouthfeel is incredibly silky, great acidity. Strawberries, lavender, cherries and other red/black fruits. Tannins are extremely well integrated and very fine. Long long aftertaste. This one is still a baby, it will have decades ahead of it. It actually shut down a bit over the course of the dinner. No rush to open the next. Will even be better in the future. 2008 for me is one of the best years for Barolo and this one confirmed it once again.

  • 2008 Barolo Retrospective (Blind tasted) (The North End Grill): The nose was slightly restrained and opened up only with coax in the glass, showing notes of dried strawberry, crushed roses, dried citrus, savory saline-minerals and dusty exotic florals. On the palate, I found silky textures which coated the senses, yet they were quickly offset by fine tannin and zesty spice with ripe red and blue fruits, as appealing sweet inner-florals developed over time. It finished long and structured with saturating black raspberry fruit and a coating of grippy young tannin.

  • Spectacular notes of truffle, underwood, sweet red fruit, tobacco, cigar, also some flowery notes, spices. It's full-bodied, super silky despite the still pretty high tannin and has high acidity. Superb complexity. Aromatic, silky and complete. Love it. One of the absolute stars... (97+)

  • Lovely and elegant. Translucent garnet body, expressive nose of red fruit, roses, hint of anise. On the palate tannins, spice, cherry and raspberry; light but powerful, long finish. Much life ahead I would think. Really delicious -- best wine I've had this year. One more to go and I will try to wait several years.

  • Short double decant. Dark ruby. Beautifully aromatic nose with red and dark fruit, rose petals, earthy flavors and spices. Nose carries into attack. The wine has a light and ethereal body. If I can critique one thing is that the mid palate feels a bit watered down and could do with a bit more aromatic intensity and concentration to match the wonderful nose. But perhaps this is yet to come. Medium (-) tannins. Good length. 93+

  • Nose - plum, licorice, iron
Mouth - sour plum, serious fruit, bold, I get hints of tar and dark plum on a serious wine of deep fruit, big acidity, and long tannins. Delicious and ferocious simultaneously. Savory fruit. A delight. Hold.

  • Medium-light garnet. Already expressive nose of tar, red fruit, roses, clay, spices. Elegant on the palate, Rinaldi is always more elegant than Monfortino, but tannins are still not to be underestimated. While alcohol is 14.5%, it remains light like many Barolo of the elegant 2008 vintage. A great Barolo, early drinking window. 96-97

  • My btl and same btl as R&Rler. Opened around 3:30 poured a small glass and tried just slow oxing but it seemed just a tad stern on the palate. So then , afraid to give it too much air but something more, I double decanted before leaving for I Nonni. Pulled the cork on arrival and started drinking around 7PM. I think this may be closing down a little from my first btl in June 2015 but, its still awesome! If Piedmont had a Grand Cru designation this wine would deserve it. For lovers of Piedmont it is, Grand Cru. This wine is crazy good with kaleidoscopic flavors. Finesse, elegance and complexity are it's calling cards. So much so, that its power and tannins go unnoticed. This is old school but not brutish or unfriendly in any way. I remain completely, smitten with this wine. Overused, but this is "Burgundian" and "ethereal" personified. Everything I hoped this would be. Can I keep my hands off my other btls? I doubt it. Want to go "directly to go", try one of these! Not inexpensive but for what it is a steal. This wine has so much personality and class. My last two are safely in my storage locker out of reach from Craig :). Ill try the next one in 3-5 years. Guessing these will be ideal from 2020 +.

  • Barolo and Barbaresco at I Nonni (I Nonni, St. Paul, MN): Medium dark red color. This did have some air; drank 1 glass over 90 minutes. Another great showing for this wine. Love the nose, extremely aromatic, a great mix of dried forest floor notes, leather, dried flowers, ripe cherry, and baked strawberry. The palate is vibrant and energetic, there's a great freshness that feels so lively, dried berries, cherry, anise, round and plush tannins that are so nice already. This shows so well at this stage, it would be tough to keep your hands off them. 95+pts.

  • Has this with the 07 and followed over 6 hours. The key difference was the lively and delicious acidity in the 08. Elegant, lively nose of mint, spice, balsamic. Palate had some austere qualities but the perfectly balanced acidity made the wine delicious. I agree with previous tasters that this will gain lots of complexity but is delicious and exciting to drink now.

  • A great wine that I really like a lot. Very open and accessible given its youth. Interestingly, this bottle bordered on being too sappy and over the top. Another hour of air resolved that. Will of course last for years, but no reason not to try them early.

  • Based on the reviews below I opened the bottle at 10:00 am for dinner last night. The minute the cork was out, cherries wafted from the bottle. That only increased when I poured it into a decanter. The cork looked unused, just a little stained where it came into contact with the wine.Took a taste around 5:30. The nose was intense. More cherries and some beautiful flowers maybe a bit of tar, wood shavings. Just entrancing. The legs on the wine coated the entire glass. In the mouth the wine coated the entire mouth, like syrup. It is still a baby and in need of more time to develop further. That being said it was amazing. Maybe the best wine that I had in 2015. Glad I have another 9 bottles but will wait for several years before trying again. That can't come soon enough. Too bad his wines have become so expensive or I would drink this as often as possible. Very fine.

  • 2015 Villa d’Este Wine Symposium - Kelly and Kevin's excellent adventure; 11/3/2015-11/9/2015 (Villa D’este, Lake Como): Antonio generously brought it once again in magnum format. This has developed a lot in two years starting to show a bit more balsamico/VA. Decadent dark fruits, licorice, balsamico, dark spices and dry flowers. Excellent concentration, warm and rich palate, intense black fruit driven palate impression, bright acidity, masked tannins due to generous fruits and very long finish that ends with a balsamic note. Not as pure but significantly richer. A couple tasters dislike the VA/balsamico note but I thought it added complexity.

  • Giuseppe Rinaldi Barolo Vertical (I Trulli Restaurant, NYC): [Opened at noon. Decanted at 1pm for 4 hours.] After 14 wines, this blows through any palate fatigue. Amazing, gorgeous, complex, floral black fruit nose. Great richness in the mouth. If I have to pick one WOTN, this is it, but the 99, 01, 04, and 07 are all close behind. One surprising aspect to this 2008 is that has even sweeter fruit than the 2007, which sure doesn't fit the general view of these 2 vintages.

  • The bouquet was wonderfully expressive, dark yet refined, with a nose of black and red fruits, herbal lavender, mint, violet floral tones and a hint of exotic spice. On the palate, it was classic to the core and expanded to coat the senses with intense red fruits, spice and savory herbs. The finish was youthfully firm yet enjoyable all the same for its impeccable balance. Wow, this is simply a fabulous wine and utterly classic. As good as it is now, I know it should really be left in the cellar for a number of years.

  • Wines that Rock (Craig & Nita's Place): Medium red color. Same bottle as Chablis28, slow-ox as noted. Drank 2 glasses over several hours. This was stunningly good for such a young Barolo. This is so open and alluring on the nose and the palate. A wine with finesse and charm that doesn't clamp down and grip the palate. While still youthful in its demeanor, this shows the rose petal floral character with bright red fruits and attractive licorice notes. Seamless and fresh with a silky feel that goes on and on. Wow, I really wanna try this in about 10 years...Craig? 95+ to 96pts.

  • I started slow oxing this in a PN glass around 3:30, tasting occasionally, and drinking it between 7 - 9:30ish with our guest. Right out of the btl it was open for business but more primary until shortly after we started to drink it with dinner. This wine is crazy good with kaleidoscopic flavors. Finesse, elegance and complexity are it's calling cards. So much so, that its power and tannins go unnoticed. This is old school but not brutish or unfriendly in any way. I was, completely, smitten with this wine. We had two other great reds at the table but this one blew me away. Overused, but this is "Burgundian" and "ethereal" personified. Everything I hoped this would be. Can I keep my hands off my other btls? I doubt it. Paid $140 drinks in the class of a top shelf $500 plus Rousseau Grand Cru.

  • What an amazing find on a restaurant wine list!!! Similar to the bottle of February 2015. First slightly holding back but with some air a knock-out nose of truffle/earth, tobacco, spices (pepper, licorice), tar, menthol, crushed flowers, some red but also plenty of dark berries. On the palate it's mainly darker fruit with crushed flowers, menthol, tar and tobacco. Breath-taking aromatic complexity even at this young age. It's medium-full bodied and very dense but still kind of weightless, with medium-high acidity and medium-high tannin that is super silky and of the very highest quality. What an amazing wine this is! I can just taste it again and again over the course of the evening and it's showing something new everytime. Wow! Too bad these wines are just almost impossible to source.

  • What a nose on this wine!! Sucked me in and I drank the whole bottle. Beautiful bouquet of flowers upon open and it got better over the course of an hour- the full bottle was gone by then it was that good. Solid balsamic notes on the palate balance was incredible....can't wait to see how this one evolves. If you have some in your cellar consider yourself lucky

  • Just when we thought the holy grail is very close it got even better! Super complex notes of dried fruits, tobacco, tar, pepper, red berries, perfumed crushed flowers and sweet spices. It’s full-bodied but very Burgundian with medium-high acidity and medium-high tannin that is very silky. Very long finish with a lot of complexity and freshness. An absolutely fantastic, perfumed but classic Barolo of the very highest level. Its beauty left us speechless… WOTN for 2 in the tasting group, No. 2 for me (after Bartolo Mascarello 2010). (98+ p.)

  • Decanted for 4 hours. Good deep red with a knockout nose. The second most unique Barolo I ever had next to Giacomo Conterno. This is sexy, silky, and rich with sappy flavors of candied raspberries, spice and roses. This is more creamy and round at this stage and not showing a whole lot of structure due to the possibility of it shutting down. This would be amazing if it had a little more lift.

  • Smooth roses and silky typical Barolo style in my experience. Really really good.

  • Drank the 04 and 08 of Rinaldi's Le Coste side by side. These are both outstanding, and fabulous value in today's wine world. The 04 was deeper and showing some maturity, while the 08 was a youthful beauty that is drinking astonishingly well right now. Loved them both, and encourage anyone to seek them out.

  • World Wine Symposium 2013 - Kevin and Kelly's excellent adventure; 11/6/2013-11/14/2013 (Villa D’este, Lake Como): I wrote down as the 09 but corrected as the 08. This is a liquid sex. Cool black fruits, licorice, blackberries and sweet spices. Incredible silky palate, very Burgundian, cool sweet fruit impression, nicely integrated tannins and seamless lovely long finish. I must drank three glasses of this. Wow wine for me. I highly highly recommend.

  • Rinaldi tasting 98, 00, 01, 04, 06, 08 - brighter red fruit than others. Fresher and more forward with higher acid. Very nice but still a baby. The freshness and vibrancy were favorites of some of the crew. Much less rounded than the older vintages - this should really be something in a few years time.

  • A wine with a lot of potential but that still needs some time in the cellar, in my opinion.

  • Did not really see the greatness in this wine. A bit clumpsy and not very detailed. But lots of dark fruit. Will of course improve.

  • Great wine at a business dinner in Torino. We all loved it. Definitely buy again. Fruit, with nice supple tannins that would age well. But definitely drinkable now. Four out of five stars.

  • Tasted at the Cantina. This was a beauty. Huge perfume. Rich and spicy on the palate. Wonderfully traditional in style. One of the best 2008s we tasted while in the Langhe.

  • Kelly and Kevin’s excellent adventure before WWS 2012; 11/4/2012-11/11/2012 (La Morra): Clearly the biggest Barolo of the 08 tasted. Big scale, nothing shy about this wine. Black fruits, licorices, blackberries, jammy, clove and sweet spices. Excellent concentration, round mouthfeel and great balance. Impressive wine with long life ahead.

  • Had this in Florence alongside Conterno's '98 Cassia Francia - which was poorly stored and showed it (a bottle from my cellar at home on returning from Italy showed well and is the single most telling example I have of why we wino-geeks cellar wine) - anyway the wine in question is remarkable. Beautiful med bright fresh crimson red minty floral raspberry nose and a tight pleasantly tannic tart palate. A winner who will take up residence in my cellar in multiples if I can find it anywhere near the 69Euro price I paid for it in Florence.
