  • Beautiful wine, dark cherry, tar, floral notes, forest floor, integrated tannins, long finish

  • Elegant, quite light, red fruits with some tar. Easy drinking as the structure is not massive. Burgundyesque. Good length, some complexity. Drinking beautifully now.

  • no notes and not totally focused on this, but was good to very good, nice balance of body and some hints of secondary flavors... my strong instinct (no surprise with Barolo) is to give this 5 to 7 (or ever 10-12) years of more age if you can resist temptation... for not felt like 92'ish, but with upside

  • Brought by MK. Lovely aromas of dark cherries, plums, roses, a bit of tar and flowers. Rich ripe cherries on the palate, flowers, roses, a bit of tar and mild-med tannins. Elegant mouthfeel. This wine was still young and not showing all it has. Certainly will improve with more age and may need another 10 years to reach peak(?). But it's really enjoyable now. 93+

  • - Ruby color - Just wonderfull. So light and elegant, like a ballerina on roses with fireworks in the background.

  • Boy do I dig this. Light ruby color that is showing a bit of bricking toward a clear rim. The nose bursts with fraise de bois and red cherry fruit, a glorious sense of florals and a slight chalky minerality. This is a smell for hours kind of wine. Wow. The mouthfeel is light and still quite youthful. The fruit is sweetening yet there remains some tannin to resolve. This may turn out to be really great given another 5 or 7 years in the cellar. Will be fun to drink the remaining bottles in time. What a nose. (95+)

  • We probably didn't do this wine any favors by deciding to open and decant it after dinner had already commenced. It showed a little lean, but I think with additional air it would have fleshed out a bit. Probably still a little young as well, but I liked the overall potential here, so if you have this in your cellar, continue to let it sleep for a couple more years.

  • This was brought out blind, and threw everyone for a bit of a loop. Super distinctive, it contrasted strongly with some of the other wines we’d had that night. One member of our group guessed that it was from Alto Piemonte. Significantly lighter in profile, it was great but perhaps not a wine I’d seek out at $200.

  • Too much balsamic overwhelming the fruit. The palate is also a lot of balsamic with red fruit. I don’t think it’s flawed because the palate is smooth and youthful. It’s not hard to drink but boring. Definitely not a wine for non-Barolo lovers. Blind, I’m sure it’d be called flawed in my wine group but I’m beginning to feel Piedmont is just a Ponzi scheme. I question why someone would drink Barolo over Burgundy. Do people really prefer balsamic and tar to beautiful fruit notes.

  • This remains a great wine from my passive cellar, wine purchased on release. Excellent nose, but what stands out is the palate, the mouthfeel and the finish. Great notes of leather and earth. Very pretty red fruit. Light and savory. And still youthful so probably could improve, but one of the best of not the best wine I have had in this (still young) year.

  • Wanted to try one of these and it was good, but a bit early still. The nose is lovely and classic Barolo; red fruit, tobacco, leaf litter, mushroom, tar, violets, mint, and fennel. The palate is still pretty tannic and tight; though not totally ungiving with air and food. I opened this about 30 min before dinner, no decant and served with truffle pasta and herbed chicken. Worked reasonably well, but no doubt this will benefit from more cellar time. Minimum 5 more years for me.

  • Opened, decanted, and served. Pale red. Tobacco followed by tons of citrus and then high toned secondary perfume. Totally elegant light to medium weight with an excellent soil base. All sorts of savory notes (leather and bark in addition to the tobacco leaf), delicate red fruit, spice, excellent acidity, and moderate remaining fine tannins. This is a model of Nebbiolo subtlety, laciness, and beauty without being overwhelming in any way. Drink or give it another 5 to 7 years to get to an even more ethereal tertiary stage. A terrific wine with which to start 2023!

  • 24hr air in bottle lucky inheritance from Asparagus thanks to the excesses of the previous night. Drank in Conterno Sensory.
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby garnet colour with wide garnet rim. Legs.
Nose medium+ intensity, with aromas of red plums, alluring red licorice, roasted grilled herbs with touch of caramel, very slight VA lingering around. Developed.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol (14%), very fine light-weight but present medium tannins, medium+ body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of savoury soy, earthy notes, sweet red plums, fresh red cherries and strawberry, red licorice, balsamic and grilled herbs, lick of spice, vein of minerality. Bits of leathery meat in the mix too that doesnt detract from the fine elegance. The tannin quality finesse is the overall standout here. Long fine finish.
Pinot-like. Overall lighter weight kinda Barolo but lots of inherent complexity. Tenuous tight-rope kinda path this wine treads. Many bones to pick at if one is technical about it. It has a touch of oxidative caramel, VA also, and there's a certain sweetish ripeness to it that might be offensive but the fact that it remains firmly red kinda redeems it.

  • I purchased a magnum of this wine from Zachy's some years ago, and I decided to drink it for my nephew's birthday. I decanted it two hours before dinner and served it with a Mediterranean seafood stew. The was no sediment in the bottle and the cork was in good shape. The wine itself was not as good a I remembered it to be. The color was pale and the nose was weak. The wine exhibited little interest to anyone at our dinner table.

  • Big disappointment, as this bottle lacked freshness and seemed (to me) potentially heat-damaged, although the Italians present thought it was representative and just needed air/time. I much preferred the other Barolos at the table, though... shame this was my bottle!

  • Brief impressions from a casual tasting - The '08 Monprivato was delicate and sweet, with an incredible perfume like the best '08s. This reminded me a lot of the '04 Monprivato, which I've found to be a delicate, light wine with stunning aromatics and elegance; in comparison, the '08 seems to have slightly more exotic fruit in the aromatics, was a bit more closed off on the palate, and might be a touch less elegant.

The aromatics of the '08 were heavy on exotic, citrus fruit, standing out in front of the more traditional Barolo notes of fresh red cherry and rose petals. On the palate, it was less open, but very drinkable as it is medium to light in body with refined, but still present, tannin. I think this should be better in 5+ years, but it seemed approachable and is worth trying for the aromatics alone (which were very open immediately after opening).

  • 6yrs since my first of 4 btls & much improved! Opened 4hrs prior to dinner & chose to slow ox in 2 Burg glasses & btl prior to dinner which worked great! A lovely nose w/ roses, red & dark berries and spice. Palate is quite elegant & weightless for its power & concentration. Loved the tart Rainer cherry interplay w/ sweeter Bing cherry flavors. Has lovely mineral & spice notes along w/ more subtle emerging forest floor notes. If you own 3+ like myself take the plunge and see what you think of this at age 14+. If you only have 1 or 2 left might want to let this ride for 3-5 more. This is still fairly youthful but also a pleasure to drink now vs. my first back in '16. I think it has many years left in the tanks for experiencing this with 20yrs+ in the cellar. Ill not open my 3rd btl before 2028 but I have that luxury w/ 2 more. Today - strong 93 if not 94pts w/ lots air in a Burg glass shape. 14% alc went unnoticed. Our drinking temp never exceeded 64. Mostly high 50s / very low 60s. Best in a Burg glass.

  • Au restaurant, ouvert et bu. Robe grenat clair.

  • First of my bottles of this. Double decanted

Nose of leather, dried raspberry, a little prune, elevated tar notes, maraschino cherry (the good ones!).

Palate is very classical style Barolo - really quite fresh and light- sapid black forest fruits, pomegranate, a hint of black tea and well integrated tannins. Smooth and refreshing. Wonderful with a Christmas prime rib roast.

Interesting to see this exemplar of the classical end of Barolo making.

  • A bit muted with pruney fruit and excessive VA. Did not show well against a 2008 Giuseppe Rinaldi Cannubi San Lorenzo Ravera...admittedly that's a tough comparison but it just highlighted how off this was.
Hopefully this was just a bad bottle.

  • Wednesday night wines (Chez Pavlovich, Westchester-LA California): In all honesty, it's really unfair to put a score on this. I wasn't able to give it any air at all and I feel like this is in a bit of a dumb phase right now. It's extremely tight, but there are some lovely red-fruited tones of strawberries, raspberries, roasted herbs, morning dew, rose petals, crushed rocks, licorice, and some earth notes. This has a lovely Medium/full bodied feel, but the racy, high acidity and chewy, high tannins are dominating this bottle too much. This will really need to reach 20 years to begin to show itself. I really wouldn't recommend opening a bottle right now as there is a great wine here, but it's just not showing itself at this moment.

  • -- popped and poured --

    NOSE: tight and oaky.

    BODY: medium bodied.

TASTE: good acidity; non-descript dark red/purple fruits; would have benefited from more air.

  • I purchased six bottles of this wine six years ago. I have been drinking one bottle a year to watch it progress. My first bottle was as delicious as the last. Mascarello Barolo is a light weight in comparison with other Barolo's. I don't mind that because I pair this wine with a fish stew that I make once a year. Drink now or hold another five years.

  • White Truffles & Nebbiolo: Monprivato x5. Very primary despite a 10+ hour decant. Shows lots of sweet and toasty fruit that needs lots of time to mellow out and develop nuance.

  • Nebbiolos, white truffles, Volume V (Chicago, IL): #11436/17556. Served next to the Ca d'Morissio of the same vintage, and the difference is very, very stark. While the Ca shows expressive red fruit, this wine feels dumb and mute right now. This feels dominated by its acid and the fruit flavours aren't as well-delineated as I would like. Perhaps this is best with more time.

  • No detail notes taken as it was getting late in the evening. It was decanted for at least 3 hours but can definitely use more. A generous, floral Barolo with class and gentle tannin.

  • Really loving the Monprivato. Lovely, persistent nose. Lifted florals - red roses and violets. Love the acid, the mouthfeel and the long, lingering finish. Tannins, of course, were present - what else would one expect from 12 yo traditionally-made barolo - but it was in no way obtrusive. Good decision by yours truly not to decant, but to instead pop and pour and let it evolve in the glass over a couple of hours. And did I mention that I really, really loved the nose? 94/95 points at this stage, but should improve with age. Drank over 2 days.

  • This is a downright hedonistic wine, from the enticing aromas of roses, raspberries, cherries and tones of new wooden barrels (vanilla, anis), through the caressing mouthfeel that is almost sweet but still nicely balanced by dryness and freshness, to the long, lingering aftertaste dominated by sweet fruit, dried rose leaves, thyme, liquorice, and a fine bitterness. Perfect structure, but almost too civilized for Barolo. This is the most elegant Barolo I have ever tasted, but perhaps I miss a bit of that "wildness" that a Barolo should contain. Compared to the elegance and brutality of Massolino's Vigna Rionda 2001, this wine lack that "tone sauvage" that would make it an amost perfect wine. Still, a great, hedonistic wine.

  • Opened, poured into a decanter.
Tasted a small bit as I 'cleaned' the decanter with a small pour.
Let sit for an hour and then tasted with food (grilled hangar steak with a cauliflower puree and roasted Brussel Sprouts with lemon and prosciutto, in case you were wondering).
    Light ruby color.
Nose offers fresh roses and cranberries with a spice element.
Light elegant presentation, with flavors opening up with pomegranate, some cranberry notes, and the floral/rose petal on the back end. Tannins nicely integrated.
Acidity keeps the wine light on its feet, with the flavors and bouquet leaning towards a more ethereal profile.
    Quite enjoyable.

  • Tasted blind. Very aromatic. Lifted, lifted high. Cherry and airy spices. Roses and forest floor. Strawberry, petrichor, clay and dried mushrooms. Bit of tar and roasted stuff. Absolutely gorgeous nose. Super silky and smooth. We were sure it was Nebbiolo, but the tannins were so smooth and soft, we started to doubt it. The texture, elegance and length of the palate was as impressive as the nose. This is crazy good Barolo. I did mention Monprivato for its incredibly smooth tannins, but settled on a guess of 2004 Barbaresco... oops!

  • Comparative Tasting of B. Mascarello Barolo and G. Mascarello Barolo Monprivato (Dig Wines, San Francisco): High toned and minty. Light, spicy, gentle red fruit that almost shows some sweetness. A dollop of blood orange and then tongue coating tannins that are not too grippy. Excellent and not far from being ready, but the tannin reminds you that this will age further even if not being built for the ages.

  • The '08 Monprivato showed a pretty bouquet of dusty, mineral-encased bright cherry, crushed stone, dried roses, soil tones and hints of undergrowth. On the palate, I found zesty, feminine textures, accentuated by brisk acidity with bright cherry and strawberry, sweet herbal tea, saturating mineral tones and the slightest hint of fine tannin. It finished medium-long, fresh and savory with lingering inner florals, minerals and spice. This is showing beautifully tonight, but it's very hard to gauge how well it will age.

  • DBYOB (stockholm): Yep, this was the nebbiolo in the flight, not just the color gave it away but also the rose-hip, and paint thinner edge, as well as some earthy notes. At first I was skeptical but it came around and delivered. But quite intellectual and much better with some cold cut meats.

  • Predominantly stewed fruits and flinty notes usually found in older Italians. Could find only a little mint and floral aromas. Very different from the 2006 I had 1.5 years ago, whose floral scent is huge and had an elegant mouth feel. Likely irregular /prematurely aged/flawed.

Interesting my below-expectation experience coincides with some recent TNs of this vintage.

  • Nose is filled with cherry perfume, florals and fine minerals.
    Quite Burgundian.
Cherries and raspberries on the palate, roses and licorice, with a very fine structure and clean and high acidity.
    A very elegant Barolo indeed.
    Drinking very good already.

  • 2008 Barolo&Barbaresco Check-in (Osteria Langhe, Chicago IL): Nose: The nose is still very tight, but, what is there is filled with strawberries, red cherries, red berries, earth tones, morning dew, rose petals, violets, raspberries, truffles, and some licorice. It takes some work to coax everything out, but what shows through is all together beautiful.

Taste: Medium bodied with high acidity and high tannins. The structure is noticeably youthful with the tannins being extremely firm and the acidity a bit biting right now. The feel is lithe and understated with strawberries, red cherries, red berries, earth tones, rose ptals, licorice, and raspberries.

Overall: Even though this received over 8 hours of air, it was still tight and far from showing all it can do. This needs at least another 8+ years before it will start to really show itself.

  • 2008 Piedmont at Osteria Langhe (Chicago, IL): #10999. This is a wine that isn't showing too well right now. The nose, certainly has some beautiful elements, but it feels like I'm experiencing it through a veil that needs to be lifted. The same goes on the palate. There could be so much more, but it's muted. What fruit I could pick up is soft and pretty, and even on the palate, I sense it more as a perfume than as a taste. The tannins are a little coarse (perhaps the only thing not super elegant about this wine), but I suppose they'll soften up with more time.

  • Nebbiolo Tasting (Tim and Elliott's Place, San Francisco): 3 hours decanting; highly aromatic, red fruit but also really complex spices, savory, tar, layers of depth; palate is fresh, light bodied, elegant red fruit, high acid, balanced medium alcohol, plenty of red fruit; long finish. A savory, complex wine, drinking well but also seems like it will evolve with time. Lovely. Will wait 5-10 years before opening any more bottles. 93-94+

  • Really lovely right now on both days 1 and 2. Soft, with red fruits, flowers, some tar. Long and clean and savory on the finish. Palate is more interesting and nuanced than the nose, but the nose is has rose and licorice notes and is very nice. This has the balance to age for a long time, I am glad to have many more bottles to see where it will go.

  • This wine is simply flat out delicious right now. It was wonderful after a three hour decant. The part that I poured into a 250 ml bottle was wonderful 3 days later, perhaps even more so. Expressive nose of cherry and leather, rich palate of cherry, dark fruit and savory notes. Tannins need to integrate a bit more, the finish is slightly drying. Surprisingly good for 8 years out, is this peaking early or is this headed for spectacular?

  • Beat your 2016 WOTY Dinner: Cherry, toast, ash, roses and blackberry on the nose. The palate is rather bright, with plenty of fine tannins lining up in support. Really good length and flow, there is even an element of refreshment to it. All fits together very nicely.

  • I think, this was Jason Ps btl tonight? A complete disappointment! I own 3 of these and was hoping to be wowed. This btl was either chewing on allot of oak yet or perhaps even flawed?? Had an odd nose that I think had something to do with the oak. The texture was nice but the weird overpowering nose made it impossible to enjoy anything about this wine tonight. Never blew off and sadly I ended up dumping a little of my pour. This can't be scored but I'm also now sure its flawed. Likely just way too young and need of integration of its oak. Bummer, once I spotted this btl I couldn't wait to taste it. I'll stay away from btls for a few years plus.

  • Monthly wine group tasting Barolo and Barbaresco. I did not bring this, but it was my WOTN. Would not have believed this was PNP if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes. Tannins were silkier and more elegant than older wines decanted for hours. All the elements were in balance; nice bouquet, nuanced fruit flavors, and long finish. Gotta believe this will get better, but surprisingly good now.

  • Barolo from Traditional Producers (Portland, OR): Good aromas show complexity immediately. Dark cherries and roses are supported by spicy tobacco and a touch of icy minerality. When tasted, strawberries and cherries start things out. There is a great evolution of fruit as the wine moves across the palate. The strawberries show excellent depth, and a touch of thyme adds complexity to them. Some faint cinnamon shows as the wine transisitions into the finish. The tannins then come in with an earthy touch. They get full later, but never become overwhelming. The tannins are full, but in a good place already.

  • The goal: Traditionally produced profound Barolo in classic vintages (My House (Portland, OR)): This was decanted for 2-3 hours before we dove in. The aromas are vibrant and fresh, though quite forward. Smells quite fine, with tons of glazed strawberries. While showing some brightness, the aromas are quite luscious. Rich and ripe fruit enter on the palate, and this offers an elegant, sexy soft texture. Fine grained tannins are prevalent, but not much in the way of the purity of fruit. Very pretty and intensely acidic. Lots of elegance on the finish as well, showing notes of strawberry lingering beautifully. Tons of tannins dial in at the end and this is now coming across much more closed. This wine too drank well over three days tried. As is often the case, the Monprivato was perhaps the prettiest wine in the lineup and a wonderful wine to stick away.

  • A very young wine that was surprisingly open and hints at potential greatness. Lots of rose petals and strawberry with spice and minerals. Long, graceful finish. The structure is still quite prominent and would suggest a long decant, or at least 5 more years of rest (but make no mistake, it can go a LONG time).

  • Suprisingly open for business for an 08. Firm yet elegant but still well defined black cherry fruited with more masculine gentlemanly structure. Lots of roses and hibiscus and a whiff of meatiness.

  • Poker and Wine (Kat and Yuwen's): I nursed glasses of this all night. This was infanticide of course, even if the wine drank remarkably well for such a young Monprivato, but it provided really nice glimpse of its tremendous potential. There was just such a beautiful classic quality to it. A bit tight and rather dominated by simple scents of red cherry at first, the nose opened up with time to show beautiful little notes of spice and smoke, orange peel and menthol, and then gentle floral notes floating around a lifted core of blueberry and red fruit aromas. Very pretty. The palate was finesse personified. This had the finest, silkiest tannins and lovely precise acidity delicately draped over wonderfully pure notes of dark berries and black cherries. It was amazingly soft and melting for a young Barolo, yet full of presence and a gentle intensity that just rang through the wine's crystal clear depth. It was wonderfully integrated too, wound together beautifully all the way through into an effortlessly long finish infused with gentle floral and spice hints. Beautiful, understated and elegant, yet with the bones to last just about forever – this is a top class Barolo. While I found it surprisingly complex and engaging even it its extreme youth, it will probably hit peak only in some 15-20 years from now. 94+

  • 2014 New York Wine Experience Trip; 10/14/2014-10/21/2014 (New York City, NY): While most great Barolos tend to be "masculine" and require significant time in the cellar, this gem is a sexy "feminine" version of the Nebbiolo grape. The human analogy would be a gorgeous woman in an evening gown. Red currants, cola, violets, lavender and loamy earth are found on the nose and palate of this medium ruby-colored wine. Medium-bodied and with nice acidity, it weaves its alcohol and medium-weight, silky tannins nicely into its structure. Solid in the middle and closing with impressive length, this is about as hedonistic as young Barolo can get! Enjoy this unusual offering over the next 10-15 years. Drink now-2029.

The fruit is sweet against the gums, with a jube like quality but detailed at the same time. It has good flesh and floral nuance and has decent but fine structure and outstanding length.

  • Nebbiolo: Splendido. Aereo, menta, fiori, rose, salmastro. Sobria complessità. Bocca perfetta, con un equilibrio da grande vino francese. Elegante estrazione, preciso, ha un sapore suo. Pulizia, equilibrio, fiori, puro. Vino grandissimo

  • I did not get to the level of appreciation of the community that rated it 94+, but I'll chalk that up to less experience with this producer and terroir. To be fair, I did not give the wine any time to open up.

  • Strawberries and balsamic vinegar. Beautiful aromas and body. Extremely long finish.

  • As good as barolo gets. Obviously still a baby, but unbelievably good at this point. I've had the 04/06/07 Monprivato's, all of which are wonderful, but this is in a totally different class.

  • Surprisingly open. Off the list at Cortogna. This is my kind of Barolo. I love the purity and elegance.

  • Huge potential here. Much too young to truly rate, but I suspect that this will morph into something truly special over the next decade. The nose was amazing, classic barolo nose of tar and roses. Was not giving up much but the potential is there.

  • I drank this wine over the past several weeks on the Coravin. It is still somewhat open for business and is just showing all you want from a fine, classic vintage of Monprivato, the chalky, rosy, almost geranium scent of this unique and great terroir. This one is going to provide wonderful pleasure for years to come.

  • Mursteinsrød. Medium+ intensitet. Røde bær, kirsebær, steinfrukt og floral på nesen. Medium syre. Bløte, fløyelsaktige tanniner. Medium fylde og medium+ konsentrasjon. Medium+ lengde.

  • Quick taste at the producer. Superbly balanced, complex, wonderfully elegant wine! Huge potential, yet accessible now. Nice forest fruit. Very long.

  • An elegant Monprivato with bright red fruit, dried herbs, roses and a hint of liquorice. Good acidity and refined tannins, resulting in a silky mouthfeel. Great balance - excellent concentration but nothing more than medium bodied. Really lovely - shows what this might become in 15+ years.

  • Tasted at the Cantina. Quite elegant in its nose and palate. Very good and promising although out of the gate not nearly as 'wow' as some of the other 2008s we tasted in the area. Sweet and complex with tar and roses on the palate. This wine always ages well and should again be very special in a decade or so.

  • Bigger tannin than Santo Stefano; More red fruits; A bit richer; Consistent finish
