Pours a medium gold in the glass. Developoing medium plus aromas of quince, pear, white peach, vanilla, cream, white plum, nutmeg, toast, vanilla, honey, jasmine, apple blossom, and lychee- almost gewurtztraminer in the nose. Mouth follows suit. Noted glycol and alcohol feel- round and warming. Dry wine, low acid, full bodied, high alcohol, pronounced flavor inensity, long finish. Nice wine, needs more of chill than you think it might to tone down that heat. Good Condrieu, but not my favorite at $130 paid, and I think you can get better for less (Perret, Cuilleron come to mind).

Un Repas en Cuisine - GD host (City Club FW - Chef's Table): Tasted single blind - deep gold in the glass, so this looked quite old. Nose and initial palate were all alcohol, and almost sour fruit. I would never have made it to Condrieu here - which maybe is on me - but this bottle seemed off. The person sitting next to me thought so too, as neither of us could get past the heat on this one. Guessed a southern Rhone white, 10-15 years old.

Old Guys Lunch: Hittin' the Patio (Ciao Bella, Mpls): Light gold color. Drank a glass over 45 minutes. Tropical, dried herbs, patisserie cream on the nose. The palate is tropcial, rich and voluptuous, beeswax, spice, sour orange peel, and more angular on the back end with some alcohol coming through.

PNP. Initial impression of oak is very strong, so if drinking, either decant for a short while or give it a pour and give it some time to blow off. The wine is highly aromatic and lovely white stone fruits once you get beyond the oak. For this reason, the wine improved with time throughout dinner. Drank with oysters (not so great ) and then lobster where it went much better. Very pretty wine

Most expressive nose with white peaches, apricots - very fruity. Mellow acidity, more yellow stone fruits, honey notes all over, then a long, unctuous finish with some spice to give zest to this amazingly complex and enjoyable wine. Had it with homemade white bean chicken chili and went perfectly with it. A fantastic wine that only reinforces the fact that Northern Rhône makes some of the best whites in the World - period!

Wow what a nose! Honeysuckle flowers after a spring rain and honeydew melon, backed by some tropical hints of mango and papaya. There are also some candle wax aromas. The palate reveals a rich silky array of pears and crème brûlée with a back bone of summer melon juice poured over crushed rocks. The body has a creamy minerality that thoroughly coates the entire mouth with persistence. This is a wine I could sip on all day. Paired excellently with baked mustard-coated flounder.

Honeysuckle, apricot, tangerine, melon, crème brûlée and hazelnut. Ripe and creamy with a very long, layered finish. Extremely well balanced. Pure hedonism. Served with crab stuffed flounder and green bean almondine.

Beautiful and very poised white from Rhone. Pale gold in the glass with immediate presence of floral bouquet & rose water. Aromatic nose of peach, honeysuckle, cantaloupe, and wet rock minerality. This wine is fat, dense and enveloping on the palate. It is creamy, purely indulgence and somehow sinful. Medium acidity with lingering finish of stone fruits, melon and earthy notes. Superb wine with our Omakase dinner course tonight. Best pairing was with the Akami & Ottoro sushi

The color is almost as explosive as the nose; a golden yellow that excites the eye. The nose is big (especially when compared to the Bourgeois Jadis, not a fair comparison) displaying peach, apricot compote, tangerine, orange blossom, honeysuckle, lychee fruit (and scion says rose water), with distinct cardamon and vanilla. Each of those elements presents precisely o the palate with clarity. The cardamon carries well into the finish with is very long. The vanilla segues to oak as the wine warms. Before we reach the end of the bottle, the palate begins to tire a bit. A gorgeous and maybe even hedonistic wine, but the palate fatigue is a distraction and a bit off-putting. While big and round, the wine is not at all flabby. 14.5% alc. With homemade crab ravioli in a cream reduction sauce. 01.29.22. Recommended and leaning heavily toward Highly Recommended but for the oak.

Tropical fruit notes, papaya, guava, pineapple, cantaloupe strong on the nose and present with reduced intensity on the palate. Freshly proofed yeast dough, diacetyl, clearly malolactic fermentation. French Oak presence is interpreted but clear tasting or aroma indicators elude me besides a vague butterscotch note. Contrary to my expectation not much in terms of minerality arrives on palate but it is long, persistent, and so very smooth.
Body is full, acid is low, dry long finish. Grapes clearly were fully ripe when picked. I under-guessed the alcohol content by a full percentage point.
Paired with buttery clams and a sweet potato soup. The lower acid had me scratching my head about whether or not the butter was masking any acid or it was indeed as low as this. Still did seem in balance.
Wonderful to experience a top bottle like this one but not my #1 fav style.

From my review last December, 2020 which I echo again ... "100% Viognier. Lovely floral nose with flowers, peaches, apricot, and other elegant aromas. Delicious - creamy texture of pear, peach and other tropical fruits that hold up nicely with the other nut and earth flavors. Some salt and graphite (stone) too. Very long on the palate and a super luxurious mouthfeel."

2017 E. Guigal La Doriane was rich, expressive and gently spiced. The developing Condrieu was pale gold in colour without any sediments. Notes of quince and apricot were accompanied with white pepper, honey and a touch of butter.
The mouthfeel was dry and full-bodied with rather low level of acidity, characteristic of the varietal. There were flavours of nectarine, jasmine and saline minerals in a rather long spiced aftertaste. The alcohol level was at 14.5%
Compared to the previous tasting two years ago, the wine lost some of its youthful floral appeal, but the slight astringency did not seem to fully resolve. While it is not sure how La Doriane is going to age, I am certain that rich, spiced and oaked Viognier remains to be a controversial wine style.

Kleur: Licht strogeel. 50 + Kleur: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 12 + Smaak / Afdronk: 14 + Algemeen / potentieel: 8 = 89/100

Even immediately after opening, this Condrieu was already remarkably expressive and perfumed. Caramel, minerally, floral, a hint of vanilla. A lot of tasting notes strike me as bullshit. The human nose and palate are incredible in their ability to investigate, uncover, and eventually detect the different smells and tastes in the wine we drink. However, many of the wine notes we read are carpet bombed with pseudo-prose like descriptions reminiscent of bad high school poetry, i.e. “dried wilted jasmine flowers under an oak tree after it rained in the fall.” Or more commonly, notes that describe dozens of different tastes and smells they detect in the subject wine. Notes like these have always struck me as being more performative than realistic. However, since drinking this 2017 La Dorianne, I’ve been slowly - even gamely - reassessing how wrong I might have been.
The nose was the most aromatic of any white wine I’ve tried. Loads of dried apricot, peach, white roses, honey, cantaloupe, vanilla, caramel, a wet rock minerality and an incredible smoky tone. Almost like an oak barbecue or tobacco smoke.
The palate - as with all viognier IMO - was a trifle flabby. Rich, creamy, voluptuous, but no bite or refreshing quality. Pure decadence. On the palate there was more honey, caramel, cantaloupe, peach, smoke and underscored by medium acidity.
Overall an incredible wine that is a must try if you love Viognier. I got it as a gift which makes it great QPR, but at the $100+ I usually see it at, I’m fairly positive I wouldn’t buy it again.

Aromatic and perfumed, pear both on the nose and the palate, with a hint of toasted apple, on the tongue, comes across as a light poire William - the pear, high alcohol (14.5 abv) and dryness comes together in smooth harmony. Lots of minerality, like a concentrated Evian bottled water. Classic Viognier, low in acid. Oak notes only a hint, not pronounced. All in, a very balanced wine for any occasion.

No decant. Also little to no acid nor tannin. It has a lovely, complicated nose, but this is obviously a wine for a palate different than mine. No verve or freshness, rather a heavy, tedious ride. Seemingly well-made but lacking for me.

The Triple Threat "165" Birthday Bash (65/60/40) (Minikahda Club, Mpls): Light gold color. Drank a glass over an hour. Way too funny as I read Chablis28's note on this wine. Yup, 93+ to 94pts for me. The nose is really the star here, but don't be mislead as this has the whole package. The classic aromatics of Viognier, so intense and floral, white roses abound, tropical fruits, lychee, passion fruit, and a flood of citrus and then there's this meaty savoriness you get that is intriguing and most appealing. The palate is fleshy, vivacious tropical fruits and citrus, fruit skins, floral, medium plus length, medium full bodied. Excellent stuff 93+ to94pts - for most wine drinkers :).

Thanks Jimmy for bringing something I rarely drink. This is a wow wine for the right palate. For me the texture was a bit too waxy while much admired by white Rhone lovers. This is complex and likely a 93pts+ wine for most wine drinkers. I can't get past the texture and I realize that makes me an outlier.

The wine is a bright, youthful yellow and a brilliant nose of anise, orange peel, white pepper and honeysuckle, and yes, some oak. A bit of smokiness on the nose that makes the wine more inviting. A full bodied, indeed, opulent texture, and very smooth, with an almost unexpected acidity; nothing flabby here. A touch of apricot presents. 14.5% alc. With an apps of lobster over pasta for me and tuna tartare for DDB. Recommended. Not from inventory but from wine list.

I mostly pick up scents of peach with tastes of tangerine, peach, and vanilla. The mouth is creamy at first and then the classic oily sensation of viognier on the tongue with a touch of bitter orange zest on the finish. The body is full and the acid level low.
I'm not going to assign a score as I have limited experience with Condrieu and I think it might not be for me even though it seems to be true to style and well made. Something just seems weird about it to me. I'm probably used to whites with a lighter body and more acid. Perhaps I would enjoy it more with the food.

Quite a letdown from the 2015. Not a bad wine but in its current state, not a good QPR. Nose of citrus and cat urine, flavors of oak, alcohol, and a touch of pineapple. Almost no depth at all. Slightly better on day two. Perhaps more time will lead to improvement. 90-91 right now.

Enjoyable but not as special as I expected for the $. Maybe other reviewer’s comments about it needing more time to settle the oak and alcohol down are right.

This seemed heavier and more disjointed than the (superb) 2015 I had a few months ago. Somehow the flashiness of the oak just hadn't integrated yet, and seemed to dominate a little too much. It is still a really lovely, if showy, wine, but the alcohol and oak were a bit too much for me. Perhaps it needs more time to settle down.

Tasted at the Wine & Spirits Top 100 Symposium in NYC. Produced from Guigal's top 5 vineyard blocks in Condrieu with an average vine age of 35 years. It underwent full malolactic fermentation. Aged in 100% new French oak for 12 months. Extremely floral and fragrant but somewhat dominated by oak at this early stage. Very intense, full bodied for a white and complex. Fruit-wise I got a lot of mixed melon flavors and some white peach. Bright acidity and lots of texture, almost oily. I think this needs 10 years in a good cellar before it will be singing and should last another decade after that!

Lovely nose full of apricot, lychee, vanilla , cardamom. Palate mixed candied apple, cayenne, touch of ginger. Nice and heady Condrieu. Not as heavy or intense as the 2015, so in a way both slightly inferior but also much more typical than 2015. Still a very enjoyable bottle, fresh, medium bodied, exotic. Score : 93. Relative to expectations: +

Decanted for 30 mins and served around 20 degree Celsius. First pour powerful candied lemon peel. After 30 mins the lemon peel receded and gave way to apricot and flowers. Two hours later some smoky notes reveals itself. On the palate it lacks acid. The bouquet kept changing and every guests could not help themselves with sniffing it.

2017 E. Guigal Condrieu La Doriane was clear pale lemon without sediments. It showed pronounced nose of lemon, apricot and subtle pineapple at first, and then honey, peach and jasmine blossom emerged with 15 minutes in glass. The youthful Condrieu was dry, full-bodied, intense with medium-low acidity. It felt like it was expanding to coat all corners of the palate, leading to long finish with subtle bitter oak presence. La Doriane had complexity, long finish and incredible structure. A few years of bottle aging could hopefully round out the bitter oak influence.

Probably the best Doriane to date, this is intense, powerful, a tight fist rather than broad and sugary, minerals and acidity are at the forefront - impressive in a year where many struggled with lack of acidity. #DVR

Color: Light straw yellow Aroma / bouquet: (*) Seductive and full bouquet with the characteristic notes of ripe apricots and sweet peach, yoghurt. Even immediately after opening, this Condrieu was already remarkably expressive and perfumed. Caramel, minerally, floral, a hint of vanilla. Taste / Finish: (*) In the mouth this wine is less pronounced, which makes it appear somewhat flat after the expressive nose. Limited acidity, filming, very subtly spicy with a hint of oak. General / potential: (*) = tasting note made 24 hours after opening so after serious aeration (and well chilled) so that the wine will undoubtedly appear riper than it would have been immediately after opening. 50 + Color: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 12 + Taste / Finish: 14 + Overall / potential: 8 = 89/100

I'm not going to assign a score as I have limited experience with Condrieu and I think it might not be for me even though it seems to be true to style and well made. Something just seems weird about it to me. I'm probably used to whites with a lighter body and more acid. Perhaps I would enjoy it more with the food.
