  • Drank last nite at Wm Farmer & Sons in Hudson with fam & Zoe. Decanted at the table, though could easily have used more time in the decanter as the wine improved noticeably in the glass over dinner. Dark purple color, no noticeable signs of age. Wonderful nose of black fruit, tobacco, pencil shavings & mushrooms/moist earth. Medium body, silky smooth with notes of blueberries, plums, tobacco, with a hint of chocolate. Perfect acidity level offsets the lushness of the flavors just right. Finesse combined with very high level complexity and balance. Just a great bottle of wine, still shining and still exuding youthful exuberance at 24 years of age, with plenty of time yet ahead. My only wish, alas, is that I had more than 1 bottle remaining in the cellar. Classic aged Pomerol!

  • Just a killer bottle of wine. Opened and decanted for an hour and drank over the next 2 hours. Dark purple color. Nose of violets, blueberries, pencil lead, tobacco. On the palate this is still fairly primary and just beginning to add layers of complexity. Texture is amazing silky and soft yet the wine has tons of power and finesse. Absolutely no rush to drink as this wine is still on the way up.

  • No decant but followed for 24 hours. Opulent nose, effusive of black and blue fruit, violets and sandalwood. Palate is more modern on day 1 but evolves to a more classic bent on day 2. Elegant dark fruit, a tertiary note of chocolate. Velvety tannins on day 1, not as appreciable by day 2 (though still present). Never really noticed the oak either day. Both days really good but in different ways. Prefer the early maturity palate/structure after opening.

  • Right Bank Bordeaux Tasting: Tasted single blind. Young, ripe, touch of prune, plush, fruit is more on the reddish side than black or blue. Tasted older than wine #2.

  • Pop and pour, drunk over 2 days. Great nose right out of the gate, with cassis, red and darker berries, moist earth, then some mushroom/truffle come out after about an hour. Full body. Silky palate feel, good balance, no over-ripe character or alcoholic heat, subtle oak more integrated than a few years ago, lush ripe fruit, very concentrated, long finish, no real tertiary complexity yet. Excellent now, better in 5-10 years.

  • I like this very much. I was not really aware that Pomerol could transform into something so delicate and nuanced after 20+ years of proper cellarage.

This wine has a beautiful and delicate nose of blueberry, earth, forest floor. The taste is a nice ride that includes blueberry, orange peel, earth and brambles and a smooth finish. This reminded me of very good Burgundy or Barolo in the way it was high toned and delicate. This wine will last a decade or more but is drinking perfectly right now.

  • I don’t usually write reviews. I understand wines can disappoint for so many reasons. That’s part of the game we are all playing in buying Bordeaux futures or any wine, for that matter. We all paid a ridiculous amount of money for this wine. It has a marvelous pedigree. This wine has been impeccably cellared since I received it on release.

But here we are, 23 years on, with the most mundane wine. It could be mistaken for a $30 California cab from Central Valley. Yes, upon opening it was exciting, complex nose, decent length although very soft tannins and mature fruit. One decanted hour later, totally dead. The wine showed nothing. Wine Cellar is showing this wine as drinkable far into the future. Not possible. Consume ASAP, or at least consume immediately upon opening.

  • 13.5% ABV. Medium garnet appearance. Double decanted and consumed over two days. I recommend at least 1-2 hours in decanter.

Notes of blueberries, cassis, black plum, violets, dark chocolate, tobacco, soy sauce, hint of meat. Nice acidity. Tannins are grainy but still some grip. Medium density. Decent length of finish but falls a bit shorter than expectations.

This is at a good juncture of its life where there is an even balance of primary, secondary, and tertiary notes. Complex and elegant. The fruit is nicely extracted. However, this is missing the depth, length and ‘electricity’ to make it a true home run. Looking forward to revisiting in the future.

  • A very good, slightly ripe and hedonistic bottle. The table was torn on whether this or the 2000 VCC was better. Very different wines. I couldn't decide myself as I very much enjoyed them both. The spices and fruit on this were wonderful. It makes me wonder if this might turn out to be similar to the 1990. I've had both better and worse bottles of this so I'm curious to see how the others turn out.

  • 20-vintage La Conseillante vertical (Fribourg): Part of a 20 vintage vertical (key takeaways in the tasting story). A nice combo of dark and red cherry fruit. Tobacco and leathery aromas. Slightly cooked fruit maybe here and there. Elements of floral notes and herbs, but not much precision here. The palate was juicy but felt heavy with slightly coarse tannin. Had this a couple of years ago. Consistent notes on the fruit.

  • 20 Vintages of La Conseillante (1947-2020): All wines tasted blind. I have had many beautiful Conseillantes in the past, but in this tasting the wines did not shine as expected. A few thoughts: A) Conseillante is a seductive, sensual wine, not unlike more Bordeaux-esque Napa Valley wines. In fact, it reminded me a lot of Opus One, with the blue and black forest berry aromas found in almost every vintage. B) The fruit is ripe, but never too ripe. But only in the cooler years (and 2020) is the fruit perfectly pure and fresh. C) Even in the newer vintages, the (luxurious) oak notes are still present and will need some time to be fully absorbed. D) My biggest problem (and the group had the same one) was that almost all of the newer vintages showed alcohol notes that weren't noticeable en primeur or in the Arrivage tastings (and the wines were served at a perfect temperature or rather a little too cold). E) There were some beautiful wines, complex and seductive, but La Conseillante is not a wine for classic Bordeaux or Left Bank lovers. Conseillante is the hot one-night stand, not the elegant and intellectually appealing wine I want to drink every day. F) The best wine was the 2020 (96pts, the only score above 95pts), confirming my impression that it is a better, less ripe Bordeaux vintage than 2019.

TN: This was not a good bottle. Yes, the 2000 has more substance than many other vintages but in my opinion, they overdid it: The quite ripe fruit is already drying out and what remains is pure, unintegrated oak. In addition, there were some soy sauce/oxidation notes sneaking into the bouquet – along some alcohol notes. I’ve had this twice over the past 3 years (rated 90 & 92pts) and while it was never truly outstanding, it was certainly better than this. 84

Decanting: The bottle was opened a few hours before consumption but not decanted. Not sure if a long decant would have helped here.

  • Chateau La Conseillante 1947-2020 tasted blind: Ripe nose with toasty elements and dark fruit. Starts nice on the palate entry but then shows alcoholic on the finish.

  • Decanted a double magnum for 3 hours. Great wine drinking beautifully in its window. This is a what Bordeaux should be, not a Parker bomb, but a mix of red and black fruit with moderate-plus tannins and acid. The deep ruby red is fading to garnet rust on the edges of the glass now, and the flavors of tobacco, leather, forest floor are well integrated with them. Long finish.

  • Drank last nite with the Ancram boyz at Champetre. Decanted for appx an hour at the table, but could've used more time (note to self for next time--2 hrs minimum). I bought a case of this beauty long ago and only have a few remaining. Expressive nose of coffee, espresso, chocolate and cedar. Medium body, still with copious black and blue fruit, notes of chocolate and espresso, as well as earth and some mushroom. Complexity abounds with this silky smooth, elegant and delicate Pomerol. Wonderful, elegant mouthfeel and a lovely finish that lingers long after swallowing. Just a delicious wine that seems to continually evolve and improve. Love this wine!

  • Definite uptick from the Xmas '21 bottle - rounder, plusher. Mushroom-log element integrated beautifully into the fruit and earthier elements were pushed into the structure. Dug it.

  • Popped n' poured last nite at Copake. Didn't decant, but should have. Very aromatic nose of cedar and coffee. Medium body, black and blue fruit with cigarbox and tobacco, and some mocha notes. Tannins mostly resolved, excellent length. Creamy, smooth and elegant as always. Fruit not as vibrant as I recall, but that could be due to not decanting. Lovely mature right banker that's drinking well. No rush to drink but not likely to get any better than it is currently.

  • Opened in Hong Kong. Decanted and enoyed over dinner with friends.

Beautiful bottle - and as the host himself said, I believe that this wine has just turned a corner and is in a good place right now with some air. Best Bordeaux of the night and very enjoyable, with a lovely mix of black/red fruits coming through backed by big structure and acidity.

Will keep for a long time and may continue to improve, but in a great spot right now and wouldn't hesitate to enjoy if you have a few.

  • Heavenly - even from 3L, which I would have assumed to be quite reserved based on experiences in 750 a few years ago. Nonetheless, this was sublime, offering loads of blueberries, fresh and preserved, bitter dark chocolate, mineral, and espresso with a tiny potpourri accent building with air. Beautiful weight in the mouth with cool fruit and a lingering finish. Tasted blind, a friend noted 2000 Pomerol and I was able to help by offering La Conseillante specifically. Characterful, complete, and just coming into maturity, there’s a lot to love here.

  • This bottle of 00 La Conseillante shows really well now - much better than a very taciturn example in March 2022. Here’s there’s beautiful, sweet blue and black fruit, violet, and a little bit of ground coffee and ganache. Layered, unfolding beautifully. This has an attractive roundness and plushness, but it exhibits a beautiful poise as well. A winner.

  • Decanted 90 minutes - still a little closed - lots of cedar on the nose, a touch smoky on the palate. Very very long finish. Left it another 90 minutes. This is a very seductive wine. Touches of truffle, blueberry and smoke. But it didn't really open up much over the next two hours. Delicious for sure, but I feel like this bottle could have given more.

  • Last tasted 2 years ago, this has continued to evolve, but it does need at least 3 hours in the decanter and time in the glass to come alive. The nose is delicate but aromatic with blackcurrant, blueberry, graphite and violet with liquorice notes on the palate. The palate and finish are very restrained and unusually delicate for a Pomerol. At present I do prefer the 2001, but it will be interesting to see how the wine fares with secondary development. However, that said, it is a great wine in a legendary vintage. I actually think this bottle was a little tainted and can perform more highly.

  • Stevie W supplied for our CKH dinner this past week. I've had this wine many times since I purchased a case as a future, and have always loved this wine and particularly this vintage. This wine remains at peak level IMO. Dark inky color showing no signs of age. Extremely aromatic nose that continually evolved in the glass: tobacco, earth, coffee, violets, with some aroma of black tea. Medium bodied, silky smooth tannins, very round, full mouth feel. Sweet plums continue to dominate, but also some licorice, blackberries & black currant, intermixed beautifully with a wonderful earthiness. Lots of chocolate/mocha here too. There is still plenty of black fruit here, and it is perfectly extracted. This is a complex, elegant & still a somewhat opulent wine, with all its varied elements wonderfully integrated. The very high percentage of merlot in this blend is very obvious--a good thing here, but the cab franc also does its job, lending the wine a sense of mild spiciness & an herbal/earthy quality. Currently remains in a good place, and likely will continue as such for another few years. (So good, even SW's cellar couldn't dent its quality, lol). Decant if you like.

  • Possibly a flawed bottle. Seemed a tad stewy after a decant. Very different than the other two times I've had this where it's been amazing. But still showed some good stuff early. Big and richer than usual.

  • This needed 3-4 hours in the decanter to reveal really pretty, lifted, somewhat floral aromatics intermixed with wafts of ripe blue fruits, truffle and slate. On the palate the wine was very clean and precise, showing a very balanced intermix of ripe blue fruit and acid, great lift and a pleasantly long finish! Tannins were very supple and well integrated but no real secondary development was happening on aromatics or on the palate yet. This wine was the ying to the 2000 Hosanna’s Yang we had a few weeks ago! This was much more delicate, precise and less statured (in a good way). The wine has enough concentration to continue to develop positively although it is certainly at a great point to drink. If this had some secondary development going on, it would be REALLY singing but I don’t know that it has the staying power to keep its fruit but also develop secondary characteristics. It may, but not 100% sure yet! I say keep monitoring, enjoy it now with a good decant or hold 3-5 years and check if some secondary development has set in!

  • Château La Conseillante dinner & Kabinett tasting (Groot-Ammers, Netherlands): Ex-Château. Magnum. Rich aromatics but quite light from the structural perspective, little tannins left, creamy and gentle, less energetic than the 2001, cigarbox, mature and flowing, has reached complete maturity.

  • beautiful place! Need good 3 hour decant to become clean, fresh blue fruits and soft integrated tannins. Still has legs and extremely enjoyable now!

  • A beautiful La Conseillante with great depth and power. Still pretty closed and not revealing itself fully yet but it's balanced and layered with a superb mineral lift. Finishes with some unresolved tannins and fine notes of dark spices, black truffles and dark chocolate. Plenty to come here, I think. 94+

  • This was a late night pop and pour, but I was able to follow it in the glass for about an hour. And it needed every second of that, starting as a somewhat awkward wine coping to release its fruit and integrate its oak. But with time (not enough, I’m sad to say), this did start to blossom, cultivates the beginnings of a lavender and ink presence. But best to hold 5 years. If drinking now, be sure to give it air.

  • Fantastic, make sure it’s opened and decanted for 4+ hours and drink it up! Nose is beautiful, fresh nose, silky pomeral finish and well structured. Drinking 2+ houra had a green note to finish and franc was too pronounced. Hitting its sweet spot at right temp and breathing, ethereal! Enjoy

  • Tasted after having been decanted about 1.5 hours. Lovely dark fruit with blackberry and hints of blueberries. Soft and easy to drink. Seems fully mature at this point. Maintained good structure and length over the two hours that we drank it. Beautiful wine that is at a great point now and is unlikely to further improve.

  • Decanted, consumed between 1.5 hours and 4 hours later. Perfumed nose, soft on the palate, medium bodied, blackberries on the nose and palate. Not a blockbuster, but a very refined vintage of La Conseillante. Drank alongside the 2001 Murrieta Castillo Ygay Rioja Gran Riserva, which was somewhat richer and more complex. (93-94).

  • Lovely Xmas Claret and expressing good Pomerol jag. But also a bit awkward and some uncharacteristic - though not noxious - acidic cranberry elements took the foreground. Nice black Merlot fruit, a bit of mushroom log and cigar-box elements did well. Good structure and a nice succulence on the finish. By no means bad but also not as special as the bottle 6 years ago.

  • This was really good. Somehow I expected more, but that's probably unreasonable. Subtlety has always been this chateau's calling card. And the steak pairing was probably a mistake. Doesn't offer the perfume of some pomerols but it's flawless on the palate. I would decant for at least 2 hours though. Not big, but certainly beautiful.

  • Didn't take proper notes, but this is drinking beautifully with just over 1 hour of decant.

  • Absolutely beautiful. Held it's own, and maybe even surpassed other great pomerol's of the evening. Right there with the 1990 Conseillante, but maybe more to my tastes. Super fresh, but great complexity.

  • Opened last night. Dark ruby, with a bit of rust at the rim. Very perfumed with autumn leaves, flowers, lavender and a hint of iodine. Smooth and glossy in the mouth, all elegance and grace. Flavors are good though not as great as I expected. Bitter cherry. Good finish though. I'm perplexed about the wine's future; is this as good as it will ever be? Tannins mostly gone. 4-13-17-8: 92/100.

  • 12 Vintages of L’Eglise-Clinet vs La Conseillante (1993-2015): Enlightening head to head of two Pomerol heavyweights. All wines tasted single blind, not decanted. A few observations: 1) La Conseillante (LC) is the winner with 7 vs 5 wins, a higher average score (92.1 pts vs 90.8 pts) and a much better consistency over the years. 2) The LC showed more harmonious and inviting, less extracted and with a good ripeness as well as a seductive creaminess. 3) L’Eglise-Clinet (EC) only started to get good to great in the past 10 to 15 years. Most older wines showed too ripe, too extracted and often with a drying finish. 4) Not surprisingly, the best vintages got the highest scores (2015, 2010, 2009) with the highest scores awarded to the EC 2010 and 2015 (96 pts), LC 2015 (95 pts) as well as a quite strong LC 2003 (95 pts). 5) The race for the better Pomerol is open! Since 2015, L’EC got higher critic scores than LC as well as more perfect scores (11 vs 5; 17 critics/6 vintages) but I’m not yet sure if I like the riper and slightly bolder style of the EC (and LC is not really famous for its lightness or restraint either). But I got the feeling (or hope?) that the more recent vintages of EC will at least age much better than their older counterparts.

TN: A bit muted on the nose with a dark fruit core and some herbs. Not overly exciting but very balanced. Better on the palate with more expression and fresh, pure dark red and blue fruit, herbs, minerality. Luxurious structure with fine velvety tannins, a good freshness and a nice creaminess. No hard edges and a very long finish which is probably just a tiny bit astringent. This wine is not yet ready and will need more time to develop. It will certainly not be among the very best Conseillante vintages but can be a very good wine. It needs a bit more complexity and harmony and a bit more creaminess. A bottle a few months earlier showed weaker.

Decanting: Not decanted, I would give it at least two hours in the decanter.

Duel: Beats L’Eglise-Clinet rated 89 pts

  • Bordeaux 2000 - 20 Years On - 48 Reds: All tasted blind, not decanted. Observations: 1) It´s a good vintage but not on par with more recent great vintages like 09/10/15/16. Why? A smaller group of top wines reaching lower highs and in general a tad less depth, purity and finesse. 2) Right bank is ready, the left bank still needs time to integrate and open up. 3) Not much tertiary aromas yet - peak drinking window at least 10 years away for most wines. 4) 2000 is a bit a cooler vintage which is great for the right bank (not too much ripeness). 5) Winners? Pomerol with the highest ratings. Le Pin (97+ pts) leading the pack for me (narrowly beating the consensus winner Pavie (97 pts).

More information, top and worst 10 lists, appellation rankings, out- and underperformer from five participants in the story link. As always, in such tastings (lots of wines, not a lot of time per wine, not decanted) the ranking of wines/appellations might be more informative than the scores.

TN: Usually a fan of this winery, this 2000 showed not very well. At first it showed astringent, light and without much fruit and no creaminess. With some swirling and time it opened up more and more and became more balanced. Overall, it still was rather shy not showing all it has in store, a rather low complexity and without the necessary level of fruit, creaminess and softness. I guess a proper decant would have helped a lot here. In my book, this was not worth more than 90 pts but I got the strong feeling that more is possible here.

    Decanting: 2-3 hours should help.

    Group average: 92.2 pts
Group rank: Shared 33rd out of 48

  • Grand Bordeaux 2000 horizontal tasting; 6/20/2021-6/21/2021: Grand Bordeaux 2000 tasting with ~60 wines from the vintage hosted by a private collector. All wines were poured directly from the bottle with no decant and served in flights of 4. As general observations I would highlight: 1/ Today the 2000 is, without a doubt, a right bank vintage with Pomerol the star, 2/ the vast majority of wines are still going strong with hardly any past their peak 3/ On the left bank, St Estèphe was most ready to drink with a lot of wines in a closed stage right now, 4/ On the left bank, 2nd to 4th growths were generally more open for business than the 1st growths which almost all closed, only hinting at their full potential. 5/ If you must open a left bank bottle, Margaux is the safest place to look. Complete scoring overview and additional commentary included in the tasting story.

    Tasting note:
Just marginally jammy red and blue fruit - but in a good way. Also sweet and spicy at the margins. A very promising nose that could not fully translate to the palate, unfortunately, where structurally there was not enough mid-palate weight I found.

  • MM Zoom Tasting (Vancouver, BC): Drank next to the 2000 Château Pontet-Canet. This clearly needs more time. Tightly coiled and much tighter than the PC. It's really showing the Merlot and vintage..chocolate, spicy, and rich with great acidity. I'll hold another 5 yrs before trying another.

  • This has really opened up in the last couple of years although it's quite muted at first and needed all 4+ hours of decanting time to reveal itself.0 Quite voluptuous with delicious flavors of black currants, dark chocolate and smoky spices. It's all balanced beautifully by good underlying acidity and the finish is long and complex with notes of minerals and tobacco. This wine is loaded and should continue to unfurl over the next decade+. Great showing! 95+

  • This is finally entering its drinking window--more open and better integrated than I remember it from a year ago. Still requires a significant, 2h+, decant but the tannins are beginning to melt and the signature Conseillante volume is beginning to show. Plusher and sweeter, yet less complex than the epic Evangile of the same vintage, which is my preferred of the two. Nevertheless, this is good stuff. 93 tonight, 94+ potential.

  • Needs a solid hour decant. Beautiful black plum shimmer, w the barest hint of amber at the rim. Nose shows blackberries, raspberries, chocolate, and aluminum shavings. Deep, concentrated and long, but floral acidity keeps it light, vibrant. Like a savory oreo mint cookie, w minimal sugar. Chocolate covered cherries, and lavender, cocoa, and hint of cinnamon. Long finish. Will offer terrific drinking for 15 years, but it’s on the edge of showing secondary notes, which may be more interesting but not as pleasurable as it’s current primary lusciousness. Ideal pairing: roast duck w cherries, or chicken in mole sauce.

  • Incredible "Gastro Pub" Dinner hosted by the Davidges (Princeton, NJ): Served with main course next to an 04 Cos D'Estournel. Double decanted 2 hours prior, paired with a "Cabernet & Brandy Beef and chestnut pie" (excellent on a cold night).

From notes in Feb 2020:"Color is deep ruby/maroon, looks like a younger wine on color alone. Nose is youthful, red/black fruits, vanilla. Palate of dark cherry, black and red fruits, cassis, blackberry liqueur. " On this tasting, Picked up a distinct truffle/smoke on the nose, blackberry, floral and licorice through the palate. Medium weight, and finish.

Fun to drink this next to a left bank wine, showing the differences in style and varietal. Plush and rounded, fruit is expressive and elegant. Great showing, the decant is needed to let this unwind. In a good spot but still a long way to go

  • Another debut for my 2000 wines, and while not as developed and readily approachable as other right bankers from the year, it is starting to drink well but with extended decanting. The nose is still quite primary but develops in the glass and has a deep bouquet of blackberry, blackcurrant, and graphite. With time in the glass secondary notes are appearing, but at this stage it is a little light mid palate, and the finish is over tannic, albeit lengthy and excellently balanced. This is is a great wine but will wait another couple of years at least before revisiting. A post script; this really mellowed in the glass over a couple of hours and perhaps potentially could be ready to be at its best within the next year or two.

  • Bordeaux Horizontal – 2000 vintage with Jane Anson (Zoom!): 80% Merlot 20% Cabernet Franc. Still pretty dark with only a pale trace at the rim. Very soft but bright nose, with graphite and seductive fruit. Mellower than the Clos Fourtet, but retains some (silky) grip on the finish. Interesting and nicely balanced combination of high acid red fruit and savoury meaty notes on the palate. Long chocolatey finish.

  • Double decanted 45 minutes before dinner; fill into the neck and pristine cork, served in a Grassl 1855 stem. Deep garnet, with a rather classic bouquet, offering up mostly primary notes of blackberry, cassis, dried plums and warm baking spices. With airing, secondary notes of black truffle and Earth emerged. On the palate, classic structure, ripe tannin, great depth and length, with good focus on the long finish. Showed surprisingly young for a 20 year old Pomerol, and I suspect (hope!) this will continue to evolve and improve for at least another 15 years. Impressive!

  • Dark garnet red. Blackberry, flint, wet stone. Sweet mountain laurels, purple flowers. Rolls around the tongue - very bright. Still has many years to go and will continue to improve in the bottle. La Conseillante is a house favorite and has always continued to improve with age.

  • Final dinner of PNV week - "mostly non Cab" palate rinse, great lineup...Brooke runs the show! (Ad Hoc, Yountville CA): Drank this next to Chateau Certan, great comparison of 2 Pomerol wines. Decanted and rebottled, open about an hour prior to drinking. Air time is a must for this wine

From prior notes:"Color is deep ruby/maroon, looks like a younger wine on color alone.

Truffle and dark fruits more pronounced with this bottle. In a really good spot now, should drink well for another 10+ years.

  • Ripe and lush, showing the warmth and power of the vintage. Purple fruited and dense. Damp Pomerol earth / clay behind the heaps of black and blue berry. Straightforwardly pleasurable, if not particularly nuanced. Preferred ‘00 l’Evangile alongside considerably.

  • Expressive nose - notes of liquorice, plums, tobacco, spices, hints of chocolate. Quite ripe and big on the palate, lots of delicious, almost voluptuous fruit, unobtrusive tannins, good acidity. Very long and persistent finish. Drinking beautifully, but no rush of course. 93-95

  • Still holding on to its last gasp of youth here, this might be a slightly more masculine Pomerol. The soaring aromatics are in play here. Full bodied, concentrated and with depth of flavor, the wine offers a structured wall of ripe, sweet, plum, cherry and truffle, along with a lot of tannin for a Pomerol of this age. Granted, this was from a magnum, so that should be taken into consideration. Still, I would give it a few more years to see where it goes.

  • During a dinner with the wine maker. From Magnum. Expressive and wonderful nose of dark fruit, blueberry, earth, sweet spices. Remains fresh and well structured on the palate. Very good showing, outshined by the fantastic 2005 though who was the more of everything package.

  • Chateau La Conseillante Vertical with Marielle Cazaux (Au Petit Bouchon): I was intensely curious about this one, never having had it but vividly recalling way back when it rocked the first round of en primeur reports. Today I found it a notch less interesting than the 1998, however, to which it was somewhat similar but a bit more restrained and civilized, the equalizer dials going a bit less wild. Has a surprisingly snappy red-fruit personality layered with the more familiar darker blackberry, but on the whole still dominated by the fruit and showing younger than many other 2000s are right now.

  • Chateau La Conseillante Dinner with Marielle Cazaux (Le Cafe Descartes at the French Embassy): Beautiful complex nose displaying subtle but sweet black and red fruit, blackberry jam, red cherry, plum tart, strong black truffle, roasted nuts, cedar, tobacco and earth. Excellent concentration, finely layered red and black fruit, silky and polished, perfect amount and mineral, and a seamless long blackberry and plum driven finish with tobacco and earth at the end. It has reach the youthful peak but can improve for another decade.

  • La Conseillante Vertical Tasting (French Embassy - Washington, DC): Very exciting stuff. Lovely nose of plums mixed with earth, leather, tobacco, pine forest and coffee grounds. Suave and rich, structured with a solid tannic backbone, fresh acidity, the balance is lovely. Cherries, currants and plum topped in beef drippings, black tea, pepper, tobacco and mineral notes. Balanced, lovely depth, showing wonderfully now but plenty of life and evolution ahead.

  • Deep red, shed all the fat but still a ton of power remain. Gorgeous nose of red fruit, well balanced and tannins are resolved. Like most 2000 bdx I've tried, this is tasty stuff.

  • A nicely aged Bordeaux. Color starting to fade and a lot of the primary fruit has receded. It was fine but a little reserved when initially decanted. But, within an hour it was at a very nice place. But, I am not sure I would plan to keep these for more than a couple years more

  • At the Milling Room in NYC with Victor T. Great spot in NYC, corkage friendly nice atmosphere. First wine of the evening, had these decanted for about 30 minutes, drank over 45 and revisited at the end of the evening.

From prior notes:"Color is deep ruby/maroon, looks like a younger wine on color alone. Nose is youthful, red/black fruits, vanilla. This took a bit of coaxing to get going- would try to give it more air on next bottle. Prior tastings were at home, allowing me time to open bottles a couple hours in advance. Very nice Pomerol...elegant and well aged at this point

  • Purple reign indeed. Somewhat shy nose initially, opening into black raspberry, currants and violets. Flavors similar, with some toasty oak which faded with some air, finished with some bitter chocolate, licorice and the barest touch of green tea. Lush and round in the mouth, dare I say silky? Firm, long, with dry tannins on the finish. Not young, but not aged: it's probably on the cusp of its prime drinking window (the oak is still noticeable), but hasn't developed the full aged characteristics yet. For my tastes, lovely, just lovely.

  • One of the best 2000 vintage I have had. Light translucent ruby. Immediately open, very gummy and full of wild strawberry, summer pudding fruit. Lots of glycerin on the palate, great balance and fantastic heathy fruit without any harshness or rough edges unlike many 2000s. Very long and want to drink more of this. A case of this or one bottle of Petrus 2000?!

  • I've had this wine several times and my notes are consistent. Drank last week at Marc Forgione from brief decanting. Lovely, generous nose of black fruit, barnyard & tobacco. Silky smooth, elegant wine, with plenty of black fruit (not overripe though), tobacco, leather, truffles, and earth. Nice and long, love the complexity and elegance. Never disappointing.

  • Tobacco nose. Succulent and rich, but not the intensity of the 2000 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou. Very calm wine, no sharp angles here, and more real point of view either at first but with time it really takes in depth.

  • Deep purple color with a weak bouquet and flavor of plums, but with powerful tobacco notes. Very tannic and acidic. This wine went through Hurricane Katrina and may have been degraded, so I have left it unrated.
Some wines went through the storm and still scored in the high 90's, so its effects on any individual bottle remain unclear.

  • 2000 CHATEAU LA CONSEILLANTE POMEROL- tasted blind; I loved this with its inviting nose, subtle elegance and silky smooth texture; lots of leather infused blackberry and plum come through and hold on for a welcomed long finish; it seemed to get better in the glass and I held on to it to re-taste later and discovered more expressive nuances of all of the above

  • Showing a hint of age at the edge of the glass, truffle smoke and wild cherry is the first thing you notice. The wine is fresh, sweet, sensuous, rich and elegant. There is complexity in the nose and on the palate. If you like young wines that are just now showing secondary flavors, but are not fully developed, this is a nice time to pop a cork. Else you can wait for more evolution. Popped and poured, the wine improved in the glass.

  • Montrachet Dinner: 10 Vintages of Ramonet and Marquis de Laguiche, 1983-2002 (Oceana - New York NY): Popped and poured. Black plum, black berries and cassis with a ripe character that dominates everything, so showing little spice or nuance yet today. Very tasty and foreshadowing very good+ potential, but this isn't quite living up to 2000 expectations, even while hinting at achieving them. Cellar longer.

  • Drank at Mistral from brief decanter. I bought a case of this way back when and am slowly working my way through it. My notes are consistent from previous tastings. Dark inky color showing no signs of age. Extremely aromatic nose that continually evolved in the glass: tobacco, earth, coffee, violets, with some aroma of black tea. Medium bodied, silky smooth tannins, very round, full mouth feel. Sweet plums dominate, but also some licorice, blackberries & black currant, intermixed beautifully with a wonderful earthiness. Lots of chocolate/mocha here too. There is more than sufficient black fruit here, but the wine is not at all over extracted. Rather, this wine is in near perfect balance. An extremely complex, extremely elegant & opulent wine, with all its varied elements wonderfully integrated. The very high percentage of merlot in this blend is very obvious--a good thing here, but the cab franc also does its job, lending the wine a sense of mild spiciness & an herbal/earthy quality. Drinking well, but no rush. Decant!

  • Very young but very Pomerol; with some focus you can coax loads of plum, mineral, clay out of this. It's absolutely delicious, but it's really going to take 10 years in the bottle to do this wine real justice. So forget about them! At Sampler.

  • Deep nose of ripe black cherry, licorice and thyme. There is just a hint of orange zest as well as new oak still poking through. Medium + body with silky, well integrated tannin and decent lift. Only nitpick is that the wine is a little soft, I would prefer a little bit more tannin and acid to go along with the copious amount of fruit. Can age another 5 years but I would drink certainly well before 2025. Still a very nice wine.

  • Decanted for 3 hours. Very good, but not outstanding. It lacked freshness (not flawed in any way). The fruit was darker than I expected, although you can tell that this is really good winemaking - silky tannins, good extraction, etc.

  • The Ultimative 1996 Champagne Tasting with Richard Juhlin (Behrens am Kai in Düsseldorf 1 star restaurant): A nice Pomerol, fleshy, nice fruit concentration without marmelade notes, cherries, black currant, some herbs and spices, good length, the tannins start to get soften, at least 10 more years, 94-95

  • Better than the previous, although this was from a magnum, still, I have better hopes for the future with the wine now. Soft, silky and fresh, with sweet, ripe, red and black fruits, truffle, cocoa and floral notes, if you have a bottle, it's a good time to check in on it and pop a cork.

  • 2005 Right Banks, with an interloper from 2000 (Auckland, New Zealand): Ruby hue. Dark spice, sweet fruit and lifted minerality and earth. Palate built on fruit. Supple and long, with plenty of spice and tiny ripe berries. Very leathery. Excellent presence. A hint of green stems and a nice note of geranium flowers. This is not a blockbuster but well made. • Drank with D at Encore for V-Day from decanter. This is the 3rd time I've had this wine in the past 3 years & my notes demonstrate the continued evolution of this fantastic wine. Dark inky color showing no signs of age. Extremely aromatic nose that continually evolved in the glass: tobacco, earth, coffee, violets &, over time, an overwhelming aroma of black tea. Medium bodied, silky smooth tannins, very round, full mouth feel. Sweet plums, prunes & raisins predominate, but also some licorice, blackberries & black currant, intermixed beautifully with a wonderful earthiness. A fabulous example of a finely aged Pomerol from a great vintage that is in prime drinking stage currently, and in no danger of fading any time soon. Indeed, I would venture to say that this wine easily has another 10 great years ahead during which it will no doubt continue to evolve and improve, though it's certainly delicious right now. Decant!

  • Gorgeous. Just perfect. To be fair, this Pomerol is my wheelhouse for Bdx when the fruit drives the locomotive in a seductive and voluptuous way. If there is a mole to be found on this body, the mocha (oak) elements are a touch prominent and there is some softness where there should be muscle.

3 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comment

  • Surprisingly youthful. Popped and poured, it took an hour in the glass for the wine to soften and the floral, dark chocolate, black raspberry and mint aromas to emerge. Smooth, yet firm on the palate, this is a bright, crisp, elegant, very fresh style of Pomerol with a lot of tension. The finish is there with its fresh, sweet, dark cherry and cocoa flavors. My guess is, this will soften and develop more complexities as the wine ages for at least another 5-10 more years. But I do not think this is going to be one of the great vintages for this heralded chateau.

  • A Comparative Bordeaux blends tasting (France, NZ, US etc) with Peter: On bouquet and palate this is a lovely wine that struck me as a classic Claret, as an Englishman would describe it. A gorgeous bouquet of plums, prunes and preserved red fruits, dry underbrush, warm earth and tobacco leaf, expressing some mellowness. On palate, those plums are there, with cherry, red currant and black currant flavours and liquorice. There is clearly sufficient but not huge fruit weight and concentration in this Pomerol. This La Conseillante is elegant and beautifully balanced, at the beginning of its optimal drinking window. Excellent! Merlot 80%, Cabernet Franc 20%.

  • Dinner in the Provinces - Act 2 (Chez Walker - Princeton, NJ): Bought this after a wonderful experience with the wine in Zurich. Not a well known Pomerol (to me at least), but worthy of any in the vintage.

With the main course this evening, our simple marinated skirt steak and grilled salmon, Meredith made a quinoa/feta side...perfect for the two main course reds this evening. This was paired next to a PNV Auction Wine - Hourglass 07 - to contrast styles.

Decanted 2 bottles for ~2 hours prior to serving, had mellowed nicely with the air. Consistent with prior notes: Color is deep ruby/maroon, looks like a younger wine on color alone. Nose is youthful, red/black fruits, vanilla. Palate of dark cherry, black and red fruits, cassis, blackberry liqueur. Guests noted some licorice and earth on the back palate. Texture is particularly notable with this wine. The vintage and Merlot driven blend make for an elegant, plush mid palate and long finish.

Really great wine, still a baby with a long life ahead of it, but not too young to drink now. Interesting note, my American guests preferred this to the Napa, my French guests thought the Napa was better (painful admission for them...). The group lingered over these wines for about 90 minutes...great side/side tasting

PS - +2 days still drinking well but looses some of the complexity and texture

  • At Kindli in Zurich with CVA and Benoit, really big night where the group contributed some great selections from their cellars. First experience with this wine, we tasted it blind to guess origin and year...we all missed (thinking Cos D or Leoville). The rounded fruit should have given away the merlot base..

Color is deep ruby/maroon, would look like a younger wine. Nose is youthful, red/black fruits, vanilla. Smooth mouthfeel. Palate had dark cherry, black and red fruits, cassis, blackberry liqueur. Long, smooth finish.

Spectacular wine that should have a long arc ahead of it.

  • Drank with the Goldsteins and Blancos from decanter at Savona. Dark plumy color, medium nose of dark fruits and floral/rose scents. Medium bodied, soft but extant tannins, good fruit and good length. The wine is a beautiful, soft, elegant pour, though still quite a bit on the youthful side. Starting to evolve showing some tertiary elements and likely would have been even better had we decanted longer. This wine is built for the long haul and I can only imagine what it will be like in another 5-10 years.

  • Fairly evolved colour but a robust, youthful nose. I stayed with the nose for a while, it was rich, slightly gamey, delicious. On to the palate which was rich, smooth, meaty yet elegant. Wonderful wine. Rich for La Conseillante but retaining its trademark elegance. Very long finish. This is starting to drink well and should make lovely old bones.

Tørr og fokusert frukt med flott dybde og konsentrasjon samtidig som den fremstår transparent og delikat. Frisk, spiss syre. Tørre, faste tanniner med lett bitt. Lang, fruktig utgang. Innsmigrende og elegant, men trenger tid.

  • This is going through a tight phase right now - somewhat reticent with some dark chocolate, liquorice and black fruits. The structure and tannins are big enough to let this wine age for many more years, but I was expecting a touch more complexity. Decent enough, but at the moment I'd be inclined to let them sleep a few more years.

  • This is a very good wine, but it lacks a certain sense of place or character. Not all wines struggle under the weight of oak, but this wine has a very pronounced oak character to the nose. Almost distractingly so. The good news is that the palate is seriously classy, suave, soft and yet still youthful and structured. If I had a bottle in my cellar, I'd not touch it until 2022, just to see what happens.

  • I decanted this bottle for 3-4 hours prior to drinking last nite with the Sables at Encore. Good thing that I did as I cannot imagine how tight this wine would have been otherwise. Even after such a long decant, the wine still was a bit closed at first pour. The color was a dark ruby red, no signs of browning at the edges showing this wine still to be looking very youthful, and it was. Lots of raspberry and cassis, and other dark fruits on the palatte. The tannins, though still there, were quite soft and the wine was truly elegant and sublime. An awesome pomerol and I loved it! I'm glad I bought a case long ago as I will enjoy this wine on 11 more occasions over the next 20 years for sure!

  • Simply lovely and drunk with its 05 kin. On its own, it opened fairly soon, with a glass poured out an hour ahead, with slow consume over dinner. Elegant Pomerol, but showing more advanced notes due to age - but only slightly. Still seems young, integrated, easy by the glass tannin wise. Decided this was in a sweet-spot, that it is starting to show older notes, and some like and some do not like. So it could age further, yet expect what you get. Very good spot right now.

  • Very closed when first open. Slowly over the hour opened up, but needed another 2-4 hours in the decanter. Very tight at first on the palate, then, slowly opened to a rich supple dense outstanding wine. Needs more time, 10 plus years ?... but a great wine, that may eventually be as good if not better than 1990/89.

  • Opened, decanted and allowed to rest for about 45 minutes based on previous reviews. The wine was still opening with a rich nose of leather, dark fruit and graphite when tasted. It held up for another 15-20 minutes but then seemed to fade out, typical of older wines that just have passed their prime or run out of staying power. I was disappointed. This wine which had just been delivered a day or two earlier, is good, but simply not worth what it sells for.

  • Drank with Greg and Sayo over an outstandingly good, light white truffle dinner at Nicholini's in Hong Kong. No detailed notes but we had two bottles both decanted 8 hours in advance, both of which showed a gorgeous typical perfumed and complex nose but which you had to rather chase than be welcomed to. Palate was reticent, restrained and rather tannic but showing great promise. We wanted to like this a lot more than it would let us at this stage of its evolution, even when paired with perfect baby lamb to try and draw it out. It's interesting how restrained this is when the 1990 is an open, profound, mesmerising wine that is one of my all-time greats. My advice is to hold for another 5-7 years before trying again.....it will get there.

  • The nose has a lot of woody characteristic : caramel, vanilla, cigarbox, which overwhelm the fruit. On the mouth, the wine has some rough tannins and woo character with unwelcome astringency which hide other fragrances. . Despite being a much acclaimed vintage for marketing purposes, this wine is average and not very well balanced. Or maybe is it just too young. Anyway, it paled whend compared to 2001 and even 1999.

  • Double decanted through a vinturi one hour prior to serving. I did not take detailed notes but this wine was rockin'!
Deep violet core, dark fruit nose with a precise plum, dark berry fruit, clean medium long finish. 93-95

  • Alcohol on the nose, a jammy undercurrent. Needs more time or at least a couple of hours of decanting. Much younger than the 1998.

  • St. Louis Saturday Group -- 2000 v 2001 Bordeaux Tasting (Jim Dove's home): Caraway, coffee, cassis, and flowers on the nose. Some, like me, found it fresh and energetic -- others found acid. Lingering finish. A very elegant, refined wine. This has much room for improvement. Rank: 5/18 Vintage: 2000.33

  • Rockin' right out of the bottle! It reminded me of the 05. The intoxicating aromatics started off with hints of oak, quickly shifting to black fruit with cherry accents and spice. Round and opulent feeling in the mouth. Still young, this needs another 5-8 years until it all comes together.

  • Farmington Wine Class. Dark, almost black, purple. Damp earth, stone, green pepper, and a bit vegetal on the nose. Bright, open, and expressive on the palate, but the finish seemed a bit clipped with dry tannins and a bit of a vegetal note. I thought the acidity was a bit high, but this wine seemed fairly balanced. I actually thought this wine tasted like a less-ripe vintage. I never would have guessed it to be a 2000. A good wine, but if I had paid La Conseillante-type money for this, I would have been disappointed.

  • Dark red. Great bouquet revealing notes of black currant, which I would not have expected from a Pomerol. There were also tar and ink characteristics. This wine tastes like liquid dark, bitter chocolate and is superbly dense with excellent intensity, precision in delivery and elegance in combination with power. The wine is complex, and multi-dimensional with evolving layers of fruit that cascade across the palate, and finish on a note of chocolate. Harmonious and wide". Superb.
