Decanted 90 minutes. Quite a tight nose but showing black cherries and a back note of cedar. Palate is more upfront - big, deep - medium+ integrated tannins with good fresh acidity and intense black cherries, rosemary and some savouryness. Feels like this needs a longer decant / more years to develop fully. Very good but not really singing as yet. Drink 2026-35.

Bright, light red color with no apparent age. With only 20 minute decant this had a gorgeous dark cherry smell. Earthy to start and then the cherry enters, paired with a faint menthol and licorice. Some faint tannins still evident, but otherwise this is fully open and drinking beautifully right now. I can see a couple more years of improvement, perhaps, and then many years at this level. Lovely.

2 hour decant. Not giving away much on the nose. Firm structure with elegant red and black fruit. Some iodine, truffle and a hint of saline. Probably still early for this one.

Dark berries and bell pepper in the bouquet. On the palate concentrated with a firm amount of oak and acidity. The wine is not a 100% fresh, so I hope this is an off bottle, because I have a few. No score for today.

From magnum, the 2008 Pichon Comtesse is drinking well though it feels like optimal ripeness was not easy to attain. There's a relatively prominent herbal edge to this, but alongside cassis, tobacco, and pencil it doesn't feel overwhelming. Good presence in the mouth, but not likely to be mistaken for a great vintage. Tasted at a wedding, so just a snapshot, but ~92 points.

My first Comtesse and what a damn fine wine! Real depth of (dark berry) fruit, with graphite, tobacco, and a beguiling, subtle floral note….Effortless stature, elegant, supple, generous, fresh, with hidden corners of complexity and reserves of power. Even better the second night. In a good place, with a long life ahead.

Decanted for 2+ hours. Aroma: savory notes, dried herbs, cedar, tobacco and menthol. Cherries and cigars on the nose on day 5. Palate: initial explosion of savory flavors, herbs, cigars, bright acidity in the beginning then tapers off, integrated tannins with a long finish. Paired with a baby bell white cheddar which brought this wine to a completely new level. The acidity of the cheese brought out the fruit and sweetness of the wine and mellowed the acidity and tannins. Also paired with linguine with bacon, cremini mushrooms and peas with the same results. This was even better on day 5. Very soft and mellow. Shockingly paired well with Zha Jiang Mian. This Bordeaux is definitely a food pairing wine than without. Brava! 92-93

Last glass was the best. Slow ox for a couple hours, then followed for a few. Open aromatics, Blackberry fruits, cedar shavings that integrate with air, crisp acidity on the wave of dark fruit. Tobacco and pen ink, the latter is for me becoming a tell for PLL in cooler vintages. Pretty and grand at the same time.

another note said sleepy so i’m gonna go with that. short decant. not memorable. pretty vanilla and not as in notes of vanilla. disappointing for the price point. figured 14 years was enough but i guess give it another 5?

Not ready. Followed over 3hrs with a decant. Toasty oak and vanilla notes still cover up the palate which seems refined and rather elegant with some mild herbacious notes. A bit sleepy. Still has some interesting aromatics with hints of cedar mixed with flint notes. Lengthy finish shows it’s pedigree. Needs time. Put away for at least 5yrs.

Medium-bodied, bright, fresh, earthy and starting to unfurl its secondary notes, so now you find tobacco leaf, cigar wrapper, spice, smoke, cedar and an array of black and red currants. Fresh, crisp, crunchy red fruits with a peppery edge are found on the palate and in the finish. This is good now, but just another 2-3 years could add more softness to the finish.

Decanted for 1.5 hours. I am a fan of this producer but this bottle was not as good as I hoped. Solid all around but not spectacular in any way. There is a good chance that this wine just needs more time. Open next 2023.

24 Vintages of Pichon Lalande: All wines tasted blind. A few general observations: 1) Most wines showed the typical Pichon Lalande elegance. This is certainly one of the more delicate and elegant Paulliacs. 2) The relatively high Merlot content (often 20-30%) showed in many wines with fine, fresh rhubarb, rosehip and floral aromas I wouldn’t necessarily associate with a Medoc - all adding to the sensuous quality of the wines. 3) A few vintages showed the very sexy burnt sugar/coffee notes you associate with the 1982 Lalande or a Mouton or a Cheval Blanc - unfortunately, not to an extent and with an intensity to truly excite. 4) Following the legendary 1982 and until the most recent vintages (starting with 2014 but especially with 2016) there are three decades of pleasant Pichon Lalandes but hardly any vintage has the depth and length of truly great wines. The best wine tonight was the 2009 (rated 95+ points) with many more in the 92-94 point category.
TN: This is not my first 2008 which drinks well these days. Of course, this will never be a star vintage but many wines such as this Pichon are now in their first tertiary stage with tobacco, wet-earth, some barnyard aromas completing the aroma profile and making the wines very easy to drink and much more interesting. While it was not convincing enough to make me buy some bottles I would order it off a restaurant list anytime. Ripe red and some hints of darker fruit, lots of tobacco, some black truffles, some barnyard aromas, good precision and all embedded in a fine, fresh structure.

Maybe taken to early, but leftover on day two did not reveal more potential. Still have 1 bottle! Maybe suggest to wait for improvements, might be closed for now.
Very Paulliac style nose and taste with lead pencil, iron and cigarbox notes. Fruit is elegant and more red than black. Tannins are gentle but also firm.
The middle part is a bit hollow/watery/missing some concentration. Medium finish, medium complexity. Taste and balance still very good, but compared to other vintages - 2008 is behind.

Very beautiful and pure, not complex or challenging. Lifted dark and red berry notes, supported by medium weight, but not the most layered comtesse and not as wow or intriguing as most goood vintages... basically very good for 2008 all things considered. One hour decant, which helped for sure.

Weekly tasting group RWP #353; New World against France in every flight (@ RW): I am deeply ashamed. I recognized this wine as being French, but I could not even pinpoint it to Bordeaux. And then it is a top notch Pauillac which I drink for the 4th time this year. My tasting note of tonight: Creamy dark berries, some caramel and metal impressions in the bouquet. On the palate juicy dark and red berries, graphite, fresh acidity, round and slightly sticky tannin and great length and elegance. Definitely NOT an off bottle, but an off Zweder tonight.

A wonderful surprise. A beautiful wine which had everyone gushing. Stylish, beautifully structured but for the vintage packed a surprising flavour punch - great depth. Dark fruits, leather, cigar, spice - so Bordeaux. Years in it. Took a 40 minute plus decant to truly release. Just delightful.

Opened last night. Nice dark ruby with decent legs. Little sign of age. Gentle, feminine nose of of sandalwood and red berries. In the mouth, iodine, iron and minerals. Not especially complex, just a nice dollop of fruit and not all tannins fully resolved. Good, not great, Pichon. 5-12-15-8: 90/100.

Purchased as a future and stored since release in a cold cellar; double decanted about an hour before dinner. A deep garnet core; notes of high-toned red fruits, black truffle, tobacco, and hints of grilled beef. Medium bodied, with good acidity and structure, but missing that round velvety mouthfeel that is so apparent in the best vintages. Hoping that another 5 years brings some texture to this wine, but the acidity, which was quite noticeable in this bottle, concerns me.

OK, a few more years will add softness and more complexity here, but if you were going to pop a cork tonight, it is not going to hurt anyone. This beauty is silky, luscious, polished, soft and hard to resist. Secondary notes of tobacco, truffle, burnt wood and leather are already easy to discern. Drink it now, or age it for another 5-7 years.
Beautiful nose of dark red fruits and smoky gravel. A rather masculine, rustic PL with tons of rich dark fruits and superb Pauillac flavors of sweet gravel, smoky cassis and warm graphite. Tons of depth here to accompany the velvety silkiness with plenty of tannins and acidity for further aging. This is an underrated vintage of Pichon that’s worth owning. 93+

Nice wine, but in a rather in-between stage right now - there's plenty of ripe black and red fruit with some herbal and graphite accents in the background, but the fruit feels somewhat unfocused and the tannin overwhelms. It still feels pretty young, both in terms of the structure and how primary the flavours feel, and right now it's more about promise than pleasure.

Decanted for four hours before pouring. Still, this wine is very very young. My first impression was fairly tight. There's some fruit in there, but more the brambled version. Some cigar and tobacco notes. A touch of leather. But all felt like they were behind a thin veil where it wasn't as expressive as it could be. And perhaps not totally integrated yet. For some I could see how this could be entering the drinking window, but not there yet for me.

Decanted two hours prior to dinner. Nose matches taste of medium red berries, cassis. Mild notes of dried leaves, spices and tobacco. Agree with others that there's fresh acidity here. Medium texture. Good density of flavors without feeling overly extracted. Seamless and elegant. Fits into what I would call classic Bordeaux of fine quality. It was best the first hour, gaining some weight as it warmed from 65-75F. Felt like it started closing down towards the end of dinner. I think more time will allow some of the more interesting notes to develop.

True to its vintage, this was a very elegant, polished Pichon-Lalande, built along far more classical lines then some of the riper, fleshier offerings of recent years. The nose was a nice, perfume dance of sweet cassis alongside lifted notes of sweet spice, flowers and cigar box. While clearly still very youthful on the palate, the silky tannin structure and brightly refreshing acidity that ran through the wine's zippy cassis flavours gave it a surprisingly easy and drinkable feel. On the midpalate and into the juicy midlengthed finish, the dark fruit was kissed with notes of cedar, warm spice and tobacco leaf. While not a heavyweight wine, this was certainly succulent and delicious, even seductive - a classic Pichon-Lalande in other words. It has the bones to age nicely too - I would love to try this again a decade down the road.

Truffle, cigar box, black cherry and smoked meat aromatics are available right out of the box. The wine is polished, sensuous, rich, fresh and juicy. I haven't had many '08 Bordeaux but based on this bottle I need to try more. Still young but it has plenty of stuffing, perfect ripeness and complexity with delicious flavors of dark fruits, spices and a hint of peanut brittle. Finishes with good intensity and shows great balance and the feminine side of this great estate. A medium-bodied PL that I would like to have in my cellar. At Eden Roc, Cap Cana, DR.

Really shows the 'freshness' of the 08 left-bank vintage. Comes across as more cabernet dominated, and not unlike 96 Lalande for me. The 2010 is similar in style too, but has noticably more concentration (and this 08 has less sweet tannin). With air the 2008 becomes much more subtle and pretty. An unusual, but cerebral and gentle vintage of Lalande which only needs a few more years. The best value vintage of PLL? Drink from 2020. 94pts.

Oh, boy when it was disclosed as a Pichon Lalande I was awestruck, so indifferent it was... And my experience with 2008 Bordeaux has been more than pleasant so far. Merlot flavors, plums but with a savouriness that pointed to left bank, but really not very interesting.

A fine attack of red and back fruits, graphite, minerals and iodine. On the palate it is very poised, sumptuous and tannins are very refined. The ripe merlot shines through, but it has fine balancing acidity. This is most accessible and has not closed down. A fabulous wine from start to finish with more gravitas than the 2009. A notable and great success in this overlooked vintage.

At this point in time, I got very little pleasure from drinking this.
On the plus side, it is a very concentrated, medium bodied, rich wine, with lots of power and intensity. Which means that in 10-20 years it may have settled down from its current form.
As of today though, I found it unbalanced and quite bitter. I would love to check in on this in 5-10 years to see how it evolves. Difficult to score, as I started at 86, then considered 88, then 90. I don't think his will achieve greatness, but it could be strong for the vintage. For the price though, would rather stick to cru bourgeois or 3rd to 5th growths from 2009/10. Not a great QPR. Benefit of the doubt given with a 90, but would have awarded much lower if I didn't know this had the pedigree to age well.
*Please note that this was purchased in a non-specialist wine bar in hot country with potentially unknown sources / storage conditions.

Unnecessarily young, but a terrific and promising Bdx.
Intensely aerated for the full day. Nose is a tightly knit super-young Pauillac with red fruit. Palate is a wall of tannins with a finish of red berries and a fine streak of enlivening Brett. There is huge intensity here and the wine is still settling down. M-bodied with a tight structure and with an underlying richness that promises great things for the future.
Will surely live long!

Parker has said 94-96p but writing now 92p , and it is probably correct. Today it is not ready to be drunk. Gone to sleep ?. Dense, slightly acidic, even after 4 hours of aeration in the decanter. Should be spared many years in the cellar and will probably then be a wine that comes back at level 94-96p, but it is not there today.
Parker har tidligere sagt 94-96 men skriver nå 92, trolig riktig. I dag er den ikke klar for å drikkes. Gått i dvale. Tett, litt syrlig, selv etter 4 timers lufting i karaffel. Bør spares mange år i kjelleren fortsatt og vil nok da bli en vin som kommer tilbake på nivå 94-96, men den er ikke der i dag.

From an assemblage of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc, the wine opens with coffee bean, cassis, earth, truffle, chocolate, tobacco and cedar wood. Round in texture, with ample fresh, spice, cocoa and crème de cassis, herbs and tapenade in the finish, the wine is closing down and needs time.
Pretty much closed down throughout the entire tasting event; some more floral and fruity notes in the nose with more breathing in the glass; the palate, complex, dense, and structured; the finish, very long and very tight; overall, 90-91 points at its best tonight but with much potential in the future; needed 8-10 years.

Kveldens vinner for min del.

2008 Vintage Tasting Union Des Grand Crus de Bordeaux, Great Wines of Bordeaux, USA Tour New York City (Metropolitan Pavilion): This seemed to have the most terroir of all of the grand vins of the night. Some funky notes of earthy barnyard mixed with concentrated floral currants, black cherry, roasted coffee, herbs, crushed rocks, and kirsch. This was very complex and intriguing as it was throwing quite a few layers of flavor and aroma. Medium to mostly full bodied, this was a remarkably fun wine to smell and taste. Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux 2008 Tasting (The Barker Hangar – Santa Monica, CA): Very unique if slightly awkward on the nose with deceptively seductive herb toned aromas of licorice, currant, and blackberry. The palate continues the theme with rich herb driven fruit that is somewhat obfuscated by the oak overtones. This wine shows brilliant structure, texture, balance, and it is unique as hell, I just don't hear it screaming Pauillac. I think this wine has a big slug of Petit Verdot so maybe that is obstructing some of that character at this stage in its evolution.

Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux 2008 Vintage Tasting (Santa Monica Airport Barker Hangar, Santa Monica, California): Deep ruby robe with red rim. Clean, moderately intense nose of black raspberries, graphite, tobacco and roasted herbs. Full-bodied on the palate, with medium acidity and big sweet tannins. The flavors are in line with the nose and the middle palate is full. Medium, smooth finish. A bit disappointing in comparison to its neighbor. Drink 1/16-12/30.

Union des Grands Grus 2008 Bordeaux Tasting (Barker Hanger, Santa Monica): Lots of oak on the nose, followed by dark plums, black cherry, rubber, and tar. Sweet blueberry, black cherry, plum, currents, vanilla bean and some oak on the palette. Dense mid-palette, with a long finish ending with cassis. Very good.

Union Des Grand Cru of Bordeaux Tasting San Francisco, nose of black cherry, plum, black currants, and bell pepper, same on the palate, typical Pichon for me, nice fruit but slightly subdued fruit, complete, better in 4 years, big body, should be a Bordeaux to buy, only a medium finish.

Light ruby red with lovely fresh floral aromas: roses, violet and strawberry. Fresh and elegant with the sweet blackcurrant fruit and brisk acidity complementing the fine but grippy tannins. Powerful but great finesse and length. Excellent.

08 Château Pichon Lalande is a great success for the vintage. It is quite deeply colored for a young Pichon Lalande. The complex nose of ripe berries, cherries, cassis, oak, earth, spice, and herbs is a treat. The wine has good levels of concentrated, round, soft fruit. The tannins are polished, giving the wine great texture. The long, rich, ripe, black fruit finish is a pleasure. 92-95 Pts

Bordeaux 2008 (Bordeaux): Nose is discrete yet complex in the late June tasting, which showed an improved performance from April. Violet, licorice and wintergreen mingle with blackberry (29% Merlot in the mix) on the nose, and the palate shows good sap and freshness, also displaying impressive Pauillac power and a smoother finish than en primeur. But it lacks a bit of the verve and substance of the Baron. 90-93+

Lovely.

From magnum, the 2008 Pichon Comtesse is drinking well though it feels like optimal ripeness was not easy to attain.

Drink from 2020. 94pts.

Excellent et pour bien des années.

At home w/LM.

Kveldens vinner for min del.

This is obviously an infanticide, but nice to get an early look at the potential, and it is great. 2008 seems to be a forgotten vintage, when pricing skyrockets elsewhere

The tannins are big, but round and ripe with well balanced acidity.
