Huge acid and tannins still. Possibly at the expense of some of the fruit. It is getting old. One left. Will decant for 5 or 6 hours and see if it rounds out any. - feb 2-24 wow wow wow. a good place right now- thought this LAST bottle might have problems due to the previous bottles awkwardness, but this is a great finale. balanced acid and tannins, saline and perfume, mocha, marzipan, medium finish, but good to see its hanging in very nicely. great mid body. see what the night brings.- if you have any of this, keep it for 2-5 years. wonderful treasure.

Light red. Burgundy like aromas, with red fruits, minerals and some liquorice. Intense, concentrated and focused on the palate. I am not familiar with aged Etna wines, but this seems to be at its peak. Impressive!

Nerello Mascalesce really pushes my buttons. Grest red fruit nose. Nice mouth feel and tannins. Good acidity. Probably near its peak but should drink well for several years. Grest with tapas and food.
At the winery with Letizia: Hot year is reflected in this '07 with sweet ripe red fruits, balsamic, oxidative notes, a touch musty, 15.5% Not aging very great IMHO, but still very interesting and intriguing old notes.

This 100% Nerello Mascalese from high altitude vineyards on Mt. Etna is showing very well. Clear, medium ruby with garnet hues - Burgundy-like in appearance. The nose is similarly dominated by tart red cherry and currant fruit, herbs, violet flowers and asian spices. The nose is medium in intensity but continues to evolve with air and swirling and reveals a pleasant, smoky minerality. The palate is dry, with medium to medium (+) acidity and medium (+) tannins. The alcohol is listed at 14% but seems lower, resulting in a lovely, medium-odied, food-friendly wine. The ethereal, high-altitude, mouthfeel contrasts nicely with the medium (+) flavor intensity and length. This is a very complex wine, made from old vines, and aged for a couple of years in large French oak casks. Drinking well now, but it has plenty of life left. Worth seeking out.
PnP after work with dinner. Lovely wine and sadly the last of the case. Appearance is a very light, translucent red, nose of red berries, medium body and medium-long finish. Really enjoy this wine every time.

From memory. Light garnet with pinky-purple edge. As others have noted, fresh and lively, primarily red fruits with balancing tannins. The finish included a slightly green funk, otherwise clean. Enjoyed with angel hair marinara and meatballs.

This was probably the consensus favorite in our tasting of wines from Etna. Less funky than the others & more classical in style with rich nose & good red berry fruit on palate. A good food wine.

This has medium to light weight and is very smooth and polished. If I were nitpicking, this could use a tad more of the volcanic soil notes that are found in other Etna wines. Still a very nice and drinkable example.

Medium to light garnet, like an evolved Burgundy or Barolo. Lovely nose of rose, iron and stony minerality and cherry jam. Med-bodied with firm tannins, freshness, high acidity and a long aftertaste. Could improve further.
(Italian Red Wine Tasting, WineGate) Clear, pale garnet color Clean, medium- intensity, red fruits (currants and berries), nutmeg, roses, underlying animal notes, smoke with some nutty hints as well. Young Dry with medium body and intensity, medium+ acidity with medium alcohol (14%), tannins medium showing stony minerality and the same red fruits of the nose with some bacon, balance towards the acidity, alcohol heat, medium finish. Very good wine, premium price (47 euros). Drinking now but can age

Off the list at Fiamma. Aerated in decanter 1 hour. Having enjoyed the 08 bottling so much, I wasn't sure what to expect with this 07. Required more time to fully open (at the 2 hour mark), but once it did, it had all the Burgundian sensibility and nobility of fruit of come to expect from this producer. I've had the Contrada a few times now, but have to say I'm enjoying the base bottling 3 times as much for less than half the price. highly recommended, drink thru 2016
By a fair enough margin, I still prefer the '08

An interesting and unique wine from Sicily. Very different from the omnipresent international wine style. The nose is quite unattractive though with chemical scents of polish remover, rusty iron and some sour red cherries. On the palate the wine is much cleaner but retains a rustic feel and a mineral iron note, but also a fresh red berry and cherry fruit without any distracting oak. Although light in color and featuring silky tannins this is full-bodied and high in alcohol but not particularly well structured. A style somewhere in between Pinot Noir and Nebbiolo with the racy acidity making it distinctly Italian. Some other CT reviewer mentioned it tasted like Barbaresco without the tannins - I could agree with that. Good now but no rush. - 89 points

Pale crimson/tawny, clear. Nose of sour cherries. The palate, high acidity, sour cherries, black fruits, fairly pronounced tannins. After an hour the wine developed additional Barolo-type notes of tar of roses. The wine is ideal with tomato based pasta dishes but seems a bit young and slightly disjointed. Hopefull this will develop greatewr complexity with a bit more age.
