Damn lovely, but seemingly still secondary. Tannins still going strong. (Drank this with a ribeye and rich mashed potatoes.) Has at least 5 more years before peak drinking.

Popped and poured at cellar temp. Very lovely dark purple color with just a hint of lightening at the rim. Violets, truffles and a bit of cigar on an intoxicating nose. Palate does not quite match the intensity of the nose - nice elegant structure, some black fruit and acid, but seems a bit closed down or quite restrained. Going to throw it in the decanter to see if it opens up by dinner time.

230324: Celebrating DQ's Bday at Uovo Asador with immacutely curated menu & wines by bday boy himself. Bottle TB from SKT. Thought this was the most matured tonight - plenty of tertiary notes. Ripe dark fruits, forest floor, roasted bell pepper, accompanied by nuances of cedar, tobacco, & a touch of earthiness. Well integrated tannins with velvety texture & mouthfeel. My guess was a 20 yrs old pauillac, either a GPL or Clerc Milon

Decanted one hour. Disjointed at first but came together after about 20 minutes in the decanter. Huge bloom of cassis, cigar ash, roasted green pepper, and earthy tree bark. Got more complex over time. Medium weight in the mouth with unsweetened cherry jam, charcoal, and a menthol finish. Very good structure and depth balanced by a strong showing of fruit. Long finish. The quality of the vintage really shows here. Near peak but probably can gain a bit more complexity with a few more years of patience. Very fine.

Pleasant experience. Decanted 45 min. Beautiful nose of porporri and violets, musk, bramble, coffee. Tertiary emerging. Great body with good concentration of fruit, mid-palate weight, and persistence. Everything is integrated well In a nice drinking window, enjoy now. I would not wait much longer.

A very accessible Bordeaux. Still intense color, palate of some flowers but above all horse hair the following day. Smooth tannins, this wine is open for business. Very smooth in general, very pleasant. Agreed with Andrea1975 consume, ready to go and not far from peak. One thing though, as other Bordeaux we had that night, a surprising thin body also reflected in the alcohol content of 13%. Enjoy this fine stuff before climate change will make it impossible to produce these fine wines.

Consumed at Copine with Jacobsons. Such a wonderful wine which still has another 10 years. A well rounded nose and flavor with tannin that can still soften with time. Some hints of cherry and a long smooth aftertaste.

Really started to open up after 45 minutes in the decanter. The nose remained muted for the first hour and a half with very little red fruit, but really started to open up. Bright strong red fruit.
The palate was remarkable on this bottle. Red fruit that showed so strong. Amazing acidity and a silky smooth tannic structure that continued to get better. Hints of earthy tones but the red fruit really stood out. This wine tastes young, fresh, and delicious for 23 years. This wine is drinking amazing now but could easily continue to age for 5-10 more years.

A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (44%), Merlot (32%), Cabernet Franc (14%) and Petit Verdot (10%) harvested on the first half of October. Fermented spontaneously in stainless steel tanks (60%) and new barriques (40%). Aged for 20 months in oak barriques (30% new). Bottled on 5th of July 2002. Total production 7600 cases. 13% alcohol.
The wine still has a very deep, dark and almost completely opaque blackish-red color that has developed a dried-blood hue towards the rim. The nose feels maybe a bit restrained yet still remarkably youthful in nature with brooding aromas of ripe blackcurrants, some juicy plummy tones, a little bit of savory wood spice and cedar, light evolved notes of wizened red cherries, a ferrous hint of blood and a touch of Russian salami. The wine feels ripe and dense yet dry and silky rather than tightly-knit on the palate with a medium body and juicy, quite youthful flavors of blackcurrants and fresh plummy tones, some savory wood notes, a little bit of ripe redcurrants, light gravelly mineral notes, a hint of sour cherry bitterness and a touch of tobacco. The wine is high in acidity, but the ample tannins feel very ripe and resolved, contributing mainly to the silky texture, not to the structure. The finish is long, dry and very gently grippy with a juicy aftertaste of ripe blackcurrants and dark plums, some fresh cherry tones, a little bit of redcurrants, light gravelly mineral tones and a hint of savory wood spice.
A suave, classically styled and still surprisingly youthful Margaux. The youthful fruit here gives a lot of potential for additional aging, but structurally the wine is so resolved and silky that additional aging is not necessary - the wine drinks more than wonderfully right now. Unless one is really looking for those classic tertiary claret characteristics, this wine is fully open for business right now, finally sitting firmly on its plateau of maturity. It is superb both on its own and with food. Drink now or within the next 15 to 20 years. An excellent purchase at 38,25€.

Tasted again on my birthday one year later! Absolutely fabulous wine. I decanted for 4 hours (2 hours longer than my previous notes) and it really worked well. A fully mature Margaux with no sign of fading and has entered its plateau of maturity. This will go on for another 5 to 10 years. Absolutely gorgeous stuff.

Very nice mature Margaux. Deep ruby colored, with no signs of bricking. Despite 22 years of age, it still retains abundant nose of violets, black fruit, and cigar box. Tastes fruity, with cassis, black cherry, tar, and mocha. Tannins are present, but very smooth. Balanced and complex with adequate acidity, fruit, and alcohol. Moderate finish. Drink or hold.

1st of 2, opened an hour, perfect cork and level - dark, translucent ruby, little development; attractive quite complex bouquet with hints of Margaux elegance, plum, bramble, floral hint, some tobacco and mineral; med/full, long, quite persistent and concentrated, fine balance with surprisingly relaxed fruit expression and acidity, almost fresh, on maturity plateau with limited upside, 10+ years. F (17.5)........a very nice surprise from a chateau I've rarely bought based on underwhelming to frankly poor bottles from the 60s and 70s.

Lovely perfumed nose that lasted throughout the evening. Still a bit youthful with fruit and tannins in the mix. Obviously old-world, with earth and depth. Really nice wine with steak. Good from first sip after decanting; held up for hours.

Very well evolving, nearly mature Bordeaux. Did not decant, let it evolve in the bottle/glass. Starts with classic Bordeaux nose (intoxicating) and fairly closed down fruit. 15 minutes into the glass a fresh cranberry or (to me) Oceanside Cranberry Jelly flavor came up. On the next pour it turned to a plush raspberry that turned to dark cherry by the end of the glass.
Noted that the color is still rich and dark. It has slightly "watery" edges but no bricking at all.
Very happy I got to enjoy this bottle at this stage.

The nose is aromatic, leather, light tar, liquorice, floral. A classic Bordeaux and Margaux. On the palate, elegant and balance with some plum, some berries. Do drink up and don't think it will improve a lot over years.

I wrote a note on this wine a few months ago. I give it the same excellent score of 95. Tasted alongside ‘09 Langoa Barton, ‘10 Langoa Barton and ‘09 Talbot. The 2000 Kirwan was the runaway winner! Completely at its best. At its peak and will go on very nicely for at least five more years. Decant for 2 hours is sufficient. What a fabulous wine for c. $100.

No decanting. On the nose, leather & tar with some over-ripe dark fruit notes. The sip brings in definite fig and cherry with tobacco hints. the leather background is still there. The tanins are still present. on the finish a nice note of pepper pops up. Extremely enjoyable. Paired with cured meats and cheese.

Decanted and drank over two days. Palate and taste best described as old leather, fermented black fruit with a touch of tar. Tannins remotely present. Enjoyable and interesting from non-fresh standpoint.

Super enjoyable. Intense, but balanced aroma's of Cedar, Cigar Box and pencil shavings, with blue and black fruit, on the palate is the same, with the fruit dominating. Longish finish and a bit of pepper and just a hint of soft tannins. So sad this is my only bottle and glad I was able to purchase in 2016 for a reasonable cost.

Decanted four hours. Medium to full body. Barnyard on the nose and palate that was prominent on day-1. Hint's of licorice and railroad tie with little if any remaining tannin, but only behind the barnyard funk. Day two showed less funk. Definitely enjoyable, but I think borderline flawed. Cork was in fine shape and purchased a couple of these from highly respected source at full contemporary price. Will try another bottle soon.

Bottle purchased from Château, where it had been stored in their cellar for the last 17+ years. Youthful appearance; very deep garnet with no amber at the rim. Notes of cedar cassis, spice box, and hints of black truffle and aged tobacco. Medium bodied, with a silky texture, impressive lift and depth, with a long and well delineated finish.

Purchased at the Chateau; the fill was into the neck and the cork was pristine. A very healthy deep garnet with no bricking. Very pure notes of ripe black fruits, spice box, and tobacco, with hints of crushed stones. Medium bodied, with a silky texture, impressive depth, and good delineation on the long finish.

Bordeaux and Smoked Long Bone Beef Rib Roast (Brandon and Kendall's, Mpls): Very dark red/purple color. PNP, followed a glass over 90 minutes. Dried wood, dark fruit, but not well delineated; full bodied, cassis, woodsy, firm tannins, austere and firm. This still drinks like it needs another 5 years. I am worried that the wood and tannins may long out live the fruit now though. 89 to Borderline 90pts if you like a firm, sturdy claret.

Tasted this alongside the 2001 Lafite and the 2000 Calon Segur, this had a much bigger fruit profile than either of the other 2 wines. Had saddle leather on the nose and dark berries on the palette, long finish, seemed more cali than bordeaux, but not over extracted like some of the CAL Cabs, nice balance, drinking well now, still has a couple more years but I don't think it will get much better.

1 hour decant and wouldn’t go any longer. Dark cherry color. Nose is classic Bordeaux with earth, smoke, and huge flowers. Unique wine in that I get a lot of apples on the palate, but also tar and cedar. Long finish. I really enjoyed this!

Visuel : Intensité Moyenne +, couleur encore Rubis et commence à tendre vers Vermillon. Larmes grasses.

Surprisingly unevolved color. Prominent oak on the nose. Some plums, decaying leaves, bit of green, and a little olive. Really oaky. Lots of make-up on this one. Seems confected. OK, modern, but not a fan.

Excellent balance of primary and secondary flavors: rich dark fruit, a whiff of spice and tobacco, and a firm tannic spine. Very good with a wide variety of food: I drank with a pork belly risotto and it stood up well to the rich, fatty texture. Should continue to improve until 2025-ish.

Prime drinking age. Tough to rate this versus the 2010.. which we loved. The 2000 has a darker berry nose... full bodied, well rounded, blackberries. Tobacco. Leather. Much more oak than the 2010

Drank at a Chateau Kirwan dinner at Stoked in KL where we got to try the 1996, 2000 and 2010 with the owner of the Chateau, Yann Schÿler
I actually ranked this 3rd, albeit others had it 1st. This wine is clear, dark ruby with some slight age at the rim. Medium bodied with well balanced alcohol and tannins which are all integrated well.
Clearly in its secondary phase now with some tobacco and some green pepper. I found this more developed than the 96 and not as impressive. Still nice, but just not quite at the level to start knocking you off your feet.
Drink now to 2025 as I think this is at its peak

Wonderful, fully mature Margaux, probably in its peak drinking window. Brick red in color with a generous nose of black and blue fruit. Tastes of cherries, blackberries, leather, orange peel, and oak. It’s medium bodied, balanced, and complex. It’s very enjoyable with a moderate finish. Excellent.
Showing its age and, expectedly, deep garnet in color. Not particularly powerful or intense on either the nose or the palate, but solid. The fruit is a mix of both red and black currant, with a bit of plum, but this is now largely shaped by the tertiary notes; bay leaf, anise, leather & tobacco. This is at a nice plateau of maturity, with fully integrated tannins and a seamless integration of the acid & alcohol. The structural elements are all in the high end of medium to low end of medium+ range. Probably lacks the intensity and complexity to be a truly great wine, but this was an excellent example of mature Bordeaux. I think this has the stuffing to hang on for around 5 years, but not enough to really blossom into something profound.
This was throwing a fair degree of sediment, so plan on standing this upright, decanting it off the sludge, and giving it 45 minutes of air.

Tasted blind. Medium purple turning ruby rust at the rim with a reflective edge. The nose gives off smoky dark fruits, tobacco and cedar. Full body, concentrated, fruit forward for a Bordeaux featuring blackberry and cassis with secondary notes of cola, glowing embers and leather. Finishes strong and earthy with hints of minerals and finely grained tannins. Drink now until 2030.

Dark brick red, but no real brown edges. Decanted an tasted over several hours. Drank with Coq au Vin, terrific match, the savory elements enhanced the mushroom and onions and there was sufficient fruit and tannins to enhance the chicken and wine in the sauce. For me this is starting to mature and have great balance of cherry fruit and mature subtle leather and tobacco notes on the Long and tart finish. In a nice place now and will likely remain there for years to come.

Very classic aromatics, with graphite, cassis and leather notes; The palate still has some underlying structure, with a concentrated core of dark fruit and tannin that will likely soften with another 5 years; Drinking very well right now with a couple hours of air, but likely to improve from here
Just outstanding! My rating hasn't changed. We stepped up with a couple other Margaux on our path to the Kirwan, and hands down the best of the group. Earthy, leather, and smooth. This was the last of the 2000. Looking forward to the 2005 next. Enjoy!

This is drinking beautifully - it's definitely not too young (unless you have very specific tastes), but will still age gracefully for another 5-7 years until it hits its absolute peak. Elegant aromas reminiscent of graphite and autumnal forest floor notes take the fore, with a delicate blackcurrant and dark fruit hiding in the background. Palate is super smooth, and easy drinking - still some tannin there, which indicates the potential for further age, but definitely starting to integrate beautifully right now.

87 pts

Everything you could want from a good, but not great, producer in an excellent vintage. Very floral, with a dried rose note on the nose, which takes you straight to Margaux. Deep garnet in color, which speaks volumes about the wine's evolution. There is a very good concentration of dark cherries, cassis and dried cranberries, that melds well with a good degree of secondary notes of cedar, anise, baking spice and cloves, which initially make this seem younger than it is. Then, through the mid-palate, you start getting tertiary notes of mushroom, leather and tobacco, but they are just poking out from behind the fruit. This is very smooth, with perfectly integrated tannins, and is entering a peak drinking window. If you would like more tertiary flavors, hold this for 5 years, but it is in a very good spot right now. This was decanted for about an hour before it was served.

WineFest in Toronto (Mike Grammer); 7/10/2016-7/12/2016 (Mike Grammer's (parents home) in Toronto): This had been decanted for a while. It was exactly where one would expect and a very nice showing at that. The nose has cassis, tobacco, a bit of earthiness in a very pretty perfume. Mature and layered on the palate. Cassis and earth. K&L High-End Bordeaux Tasting - October 2015 (K&L): This bottle seems a bit oxidized. A bit tired with bruised apple, figginess (acetaldehyde). Maybe the fruit and other elements will come out with a longer decant. Medium-plus grippy tannins, with moderate concentration and some plushness (40% cab, 30% Merlot, 20% CF, 10% PV).

Liked the style of this wine but at the same time surprised by the still chewy tannins at age 15. Will they ever meld? Leaner, tauter, more reserved on the nose and more tannic than its companion 2000 Margaux... Lichine.

Arms Reduction Dinner (Meritage, St. Paul): Very dark red/purple color. Decanted for 2 hours. Drank 1 glass over 90+ minutes. The nose is tight, not really wanting to give up much, brooding dark fruit, hinting at the earthy core and graphite beneath, but not wanting to share yet. The palate is more ready to play with the dark fruits, earth, mineral, graphite and tobacco coming through. Still rather tannic and the oak isn't ready to fold in yet. Probably needs at least 3 years. Quite the contrast to where the '00 Prieure Lichine was. 90(+?)pts.

Youthful, dark to the rim. Nose is powerful blackcurrant, cedar, pencil shaving. The palate has sweet blackcurrant fruit, quite rich, some oak and a power which makes the finish last for ages. The tannins are fine grained and acidity in balance with the fruit.

Chateau Kirwan Vertical with Mdm. Sophie Schyler Thierry (Les Amis): Decanted 2 hours before pour. The 2000 Château Kirwan is medium (+) purple in colour with a dusty nose underneath thyme, some rosemary, tobacco and still some noticeable primary fruits of cassis, black cherries. Definitely a noticeable development on the nose. Very soft entry that is slightly linear at first but broadens out just a little to sweet cassis notes with sour dark cherries. Medium (-) clean cut finish of slight thyme and herbs. Definitely richer in style. The wine may not seem like it's at its peak for now, perhaps there're some years to go (88-90)

Dark fruit, leather and tobacco on the nose. Tart black fruit with more earth on the palate. This is still young and has the softness of 2000, but not sure this will gain much more complexity with time. Had a slightly sour finish that appeared every now and then. Another Blind Sunday in the Sunroom (Chez S1): I really thought this tasted older than 2000. Nice leafy tobacco with tart plum and sweet cassis. I would expect more power from this at this stage of evolution but still a really nicely integrated wine with a decade or two ahead of it.

Decanted for a good hour before tasting. It has been over two years since I last had this wine. Back then I found it enjoyable, albeit a touch young and tight. Yesterday was another story. Still characteristically leafy and smoky, but this time around supported by much riper fruit. There’s a fair amount of barnyard action too – perhaps dividing opinions, but in my view a welcome feature adding complexity beyond the usual cedar and ash notes. Silky smooth, but still structured enough to make it food friendly and a candidate for further aging. All in all a very nice Bordeaux just entering its drinking window. I’ll wait another three to five years before opening my last bottle.

Tasted side-by-side with the 2003 Kirwan. An elegant Margaux, that combines moderate intensity with a silky texture. More austere/less fruity that the 2003, but still a great wine.
2012-12-27 Tasted again with a similar reaction as in February 2012 - but perhaps this bottle had yet more "weight" and character. This is one of my "best" wines for current drinking.

Medium dark red - homogenious colour. Mix of dark & red berries, some earth& mushroom character, slightly smoked. The nose is lacking some intensity and depth. Balanced opening and muth feel that turns into a dry long aftertaste with a good grip. The aftertase shows that the wine has class, but is still a bit closed - assuming 5 more years.

CT Bordeaux Trip, Day 1 (Pauillac, Bordeaux, France): At La Tupina in Bordeaux - a magnum shared with the CT crowd. I enjoyed this wine. It had a lovely nose with lots of flowers, smoky ash, cassis, some earth. Very perfumy stuff, very Margaux. The palate was very nice too. A bit rustic in terms of its structure, but otherwise it was a really nice wine with plenty of depth to its nice cassis flavours with a red cherry overtone, some earth with a nice smoky tinge and a really nice sense of integration. Soild stuff, and went very well with superb roast chicken we had. While drinking well now, I would give this about 3-4 years more before it hits prime time.

Aromas of saddle leather, wet earth, pencil shavings and red fruit. Evolved, with a smooth palate and a structure driven mostly by acidity and a bit by ripe tannins. A medium finish follows with tones of plums and cassis. Nice, but just short of being outstanding. Drink now and in the next 5 years.

Bra vin, men hadde forventet meg mer.

A little bit more into its second life? Meaning a little bit more mature than I was thinking. Which Les pointed out to me last time we had it but I didn't understand. The first time to me was more rich and almost rasiny. But now more forest floor and evolution. Maybe a touch medicinal as well. Finish is still gutsy and tannin.

An odd nose with a distinct note of celery seed. And some plummy fruits. The celery seed follows through on the palate, and has a touch of the stewed tomato that comes with maturing wines. Tannins are overly grippy and seems out of balance. Has dark fruit flavors, but is taking on secondary flavors. Seems like it is in the process of losing primary and taking on secondary aspects, and we are catching at that phase. Like it needs to settle a bit more before drinking again. That being said, it was still a very good wine, but in an odd spot.

Dark ruby color. Black fruit aromatics. Tastes of blackberry, currant, black cherry, and mocha. Well balanced with nice freshness. Medium to full bodied. Earthy finish with some depth of fruit. Textbook Bordeaux. 13% alcohol.

Ruby violet in color with earth, leather and cigar box on the nose. If you didn't know it was a 2000, the nose would lead you to think that it was perhaps another 5 or so years older. Flavors are nicely integrated and complex with a touch of blackberries. Finish is slightly tannic but still relatively smooth.

Double-decanted. Medium ruby, edges are plum with no garnet. Nose started with a roasted impression that quickly blew off, taking on a character of ripe red fruit accented by pepper and cool mintiness, along with some oak in the background. Showed restrained sweetness on the palate, with lively but fully ripe acids, lending it an overall racy character. Sweetened as it develops, and showed more terroir in the mouth than on the nose. Medium finish. Tannins are surprisingly soft. Clearly still closed at this point; I would say this has a nice future ahead of it, but the tannic underpinning (or lack thereof) is a question mark right now.

Very fine.

An immaculate drinking experience.

Good acidity. Remnants of a richness but not a mature Bordeaux. Classic.

90(+?)pts.

Balanced opening and muth feel that turns into a dry long aftertaste with a good grip. The aftertase shows that the wine has class, but is still a bit closed - assuming 5 more years.
