Pretty, fragrant, and stone fruit driven nose with notes of citrus intertwined. Nice texture and acidity on the palate with more peach, lemon, and grapefruit. Nice finish. A very lovely wine with good complexity. Others liked this even more than me, but I found the 95 Nikolaihof next to it to be a level above.

Second bottle pulled after the first was badly corked. This is much more what I was expecting, an early maturity dry Riesling with years of life ahead of it. Dellchen is never really about fruit, but more a textural wine, sculpted from rock. Going on fourteen years from the vintage, this is just starting to show the bones that connect Rieslings from France, Germany and Austria. There’s still some fruit, but it’s a secondary element, as it has been since release. Instead it’s an onslaught of minerals, a rockslide as wine. Beyond the stone there is a degree of creaminess emerging on the palate, and promise of even greater complexity and harmony to come as the structural and decorative elements harmonize into a finished portrait. I am glad I opened this, to glimpse what it has become and can become, but sad that it took two bottle to see that picture.

Not particularly overt, but beautifully restrained nose of peaches (yellow fruits), honey and citrus/lemons. Nice minerality with good concentration & extract, this was delicious so much so that I almost finished the bottle myself whilst watching the Australian Open on live television. Will be interesting to follow the development of these GGs over the course of time...

GG Riesling Night (S.K.Y. restaurant, Pilsen, Chicago IL): Nose: The nose is more mature but beautifully balanced and deep with red apples, quince, spiced pears, kaffir lime, yellow flowers, honey notes, and custard tones. This is extremely complex and in a way that really captivates and causes you to ponder.
Taste: The feel is medium bodied with crisp, high acidity. The acidity is well integrated and balanced. The feel is beautifully textured and deep with red apples, quince, yellow flowers, kaffir lime, honey notes, and custard tones.
Overall: This is in a perfect spot right now. There is a gorgeous mix of youthful and maturing notes along with great depth and balance. Simply put, this is great stuff!

Golden color. Nose aromatic, stone fruit, some waxy intensity. Palate stony, silky fruit, pronounced richness and ripe fruit, yet bone dry.
Still seems on the younger side in terms of the slightly flabby nature of its fruit, though I don't know if it's just a reflection of vintage/style. A bit too rich for me but can see its appeal, and definitely has significant interest overall. 91 pts

94 pts

Exceptional wine! Starts out with gunflint over baked lemon. Goes on with ever more complex smells and tastes, including honey, white flower, peaches, fresh lime and more. Layer over layer, and flexible and sinewy in the mouth. Exceptional length, too. Alas, my cellar is now empty of Dellchen. Bummer!

“Ten Years After” 2008 Dry Riesling Große Gewächse Tasting (Concept Riesling, Dusseldorf, Germany): I´ve never thought that the Dellchen will win my personal rating off all the great wines we had that evening but I think it did. Besides the Kastanienbusch from Rebholz my biggest surprise. A mineral, citric and herbal driven, lean, super precise Riesling with a still vibrant acidity and a long finish. Surpasses it´s "bigger" brother Hermannshöhle by far this evening, although I doubt, that the HH was in the best shape.

10 years after Riesling tasting - 2008 - Part II (Concept Riesling, Düsseldorf): Glass: Gabriel Universal Standard *** All wines tasted blind, bottles opened a few hours before serving, served decanted *** Clear, pale golden color. I tend to evaluate Donnhoff's wines with two questions: 1) Is the wine perfectly balanced and exactly what it should be? and 2) Does the wine's nature induce in me a state of contemplation on the meaning of perfection? This bottle- yes to the first and no to the second.

Surprisingly tight and unforthcoming. After a lot of coaxing, some pear comes through. Very linear with a sharp acid finish that settles down some with air. About as bright as a wine can be without going too far. Good not great. Hoping this is not a good bottle. (87)

Sorry, there's really nothing to this wine. There's a reason it sells for as cheap as $45, and that's because it's nothing special. I'm one who feels life is too short to drink boring wine, and that's what this is. Really no more interesting than half grapefruit juice, half dry lemonade, with some alcohol added. A little bit of nose, and, okay, you're then drinking some nondescript dry white wine. A $10 California Chardonnay from the grocery store might be more interesting. A nasty, unpleasant finish on top of it. Großes Gewächs ("Great Growth"), well, I'd hate to see what ein Schlechtes Gewächs might taste like, then. I find it amusing to see all the fans thinking this would benefit from extended cellaring, etc. I can only ask, why on earth would one bother?

This is more lively and brightly acidic compared to the Hermannshöhle from same vintage. Brighter "colors" throughout, but still very nice viscosity and texture. Green apple biting but in a nice, champagne -way. I am no expert but easy to guess that bottle age will improve this.

Flowery nose, but also with streaks of musk melon and gooseberry. The strong '08 acidity perfectly balanced with a spritzy sweetness. Superb with the food, in this case Eisbein. This is so wonderful right now, it will be very hard to let it enter the cellaring tunnel, emerging to an uncertain future in six years. We will most likely drink up very soon.

Drank over 4 days. This is a very nice, although quite closed Grosses Gewächs. Not as good as Hermannshöhle, but outstanding all the same. I have a few more bottles of this and will cellar them until at least 2015. I'm very much interested to see how this will evolve over the years.

Simple Series VI: Grosses Gewach Dinner (Peach Garden, OCBC Building): A good wine, this stood out from the crowd. Big, big fruit on the nose, with pineapples and ripe yellow fruit laced with a little alcohol. Palate, as one would expect, was rich and ripe too, with tropical pineapple notes and ripe lemons warpped in that same rich bigness suggested on the nose. Again, there was just a hint of alcohol (something I found in quite a few of the 2008 GGs), and this came across rather looser knit than the 2007 Dellchen. However, the quality was apparent, with the fleshy, curd-like fruit balanced out by some lovely, juicy acidity, and stretched out in a long finish with citrus grapefruit and lemon flavours. Too early to drink yet, this should get much better as it sheds some baby fat.

2010 Simple Wine Dinner Series No.6 - SBSS "Dry" Dinner (Peach Garden @ OCBC Building): Alcohol :: 12.5% Tasted Blind. This too is highly perfume, with floral, ripe white fruits with hint of eucalyptus and mineral infused. Light palate, lack of the concentration of others GG, with mineral and crushed rock, slight fizzy mouth feel again with light but crisp and spicy finish. This also lack of the good ripeness of 2007 to balance with the soft mineral and high acidity. With some times, it did become slightly rounder but still very acidic long finish. Bony structure. A highly mineral driven style. In a dumb phase? Not sure if this will improve and add weight and complexity in the bottle and I certainly hope it will. Skip.

A stunner from the first sip. There's incredible depth here with layers of ripe citrus and white fruited flavours, fresh floral and faintly herbal notes, smoke and savoury earthy nuances in a package that's incredibly polished and seamless with typical Dönnhoff elegance. The '08 acid spine keeps it really fresh and lively and this finishes incredibly long and savoury. Fantastic, and another reminder that I really should budget more for Dönnhoff's dry wines.

Take the above trockens and ramp up their depth, length and keep the lightness on its feet and you have the Dellchen. Wonderful texture, flesh, while simultaneously retaining great freshness. (a quality that I love in the 2008 vintage in several makers) 96pts

The man, the myth, the Legend. Tasting with Helmut Doennhoff. (Weingut Doennhoff): I got lucky. Helmut Doennhoff pulled a bottle of this off the bottling line, and in typically modest fashion said that I should evaluate the wine with that in mind. No concern necessary. This showed brilliantly. Yet another step up from the preceding Felsenberg, and simply more of everything. The most obvious observation was that there was more fruit, better balance, and the texture was just a touch creamier and the acid less pronounced. I wrote down lemon curd, and I think that captures the flavor fairly well.

Rich and big in flavor. Very, very dry tasting.

A sharp as a knife and as long as the cut from a broadsword. This is about as precise as it gets.

Stunningly elegant and weightless. More immediately enjoyable than the Hermannshöhle at this early stage.
