  • Canon vs. Duffau-Lagarrosse 2009-2020 tasted blind (Fribourg): Medium garnet. Nose of pine, licorice, mint and toasty oak. Quite primary still, felt like it was bottled only recently. I think this is a Canon with lots of potential and my note could turn out to be conservative. 94-95

  • Vertical of Canon vs Beasejour Duffau Lagarrosse (Fribourg): Vertical of Beausejour Duffau Lagarrosse vs Canon vs selected pirates 2005-2020. Main takeaways : i/ Canon trumps Beausejour overall, especially in more recent ones. ii/ Canon tends to be lighter-footed, more delicate while Beausejour is typically more extracted and ripe. iii/ St Emillion clearly struggles with the hotter vintages a few years on with 2005 the low-light, already exhibiting beef juice elements. iv/ best wines were Canon 2015 (95), 2019 and 2020 (94 each). Summary of wines and scores included in the tasting story.

    Tasting note:
Light red berry fruit, sweet but fresh in style. Good intensity with features of spice and herbs. Amazingly soft, satin-like texture.

  • Wow, this wine is wonderful. I can’t imagine how good it will be when mature. Good dark red with black red core, the nose explodes with all sorts of notes - floral characters, red and dark fruits, cedar, sweet spices and savoury aromas. Sniffing reveals so many aromatics it is mind boggling.

The palate is beautifully constructed. Even at such a young age it is spectacular and a joy to drink. There are endless flavours and balance. I’d be happy to drink this every night.

It is a theoretic bland of traditional and modern St Emilion - with the best aspects of both. Walks the fine line of power and subtlety with ease.

It’s not very often I get do enthralled by a wine but this is wonderful.

  • K&L Grand Bordeaux Tasting: I got blackberry aromas and hint of spice on the nose. Very silky texturally with a lightness and nimbleness on the palate. There's blue and purple fruit seasoned with saline and smoky notes. The structure is a little hard to get a read on: decent acidity, firm, slightly drying tannins, with a hit of peppery spice on the finish (not sure if that's from the dry extract of the fruit or from the oak). This is very good -- perhaps "modern" and a little worked, but a new modernism I can stand by.

  • K&L Bordeaux Tasting: 14.5% ABV. Medium ruby appearance. Magnum pour. Black cherry, red plum, red bramble fruit, nutmeg, and a very distinct underlying layer of graphite/ minerality. Grainy but approachable tannins. Beautiful acidity gives a nice lift. Silky on the palate. Spicy, elegant, with great fruit purity. Tough for me to see a 100 point wine here right now, but this was very enjoyable. Need to lay this down for some time so more nuance comes out.
