  • PnP. Tight on first taste, so we decanted and it loosened up. Last sip was about 4.5 hours after opening and was the best. Powerful and rich with the backbone of acid to balance. Layers of citrus and white flowers with vanilla and minerality.

  • Drank in St. Emilion. Darker in color than I expected. Sweet, honeyed nose and palate. Lovely viscosity but lacking acidity. Amazing length and balance but not the energy I had hoped for. Seemed advanced? But unlikely given the provenance. Hmmm...

  • Complete DRC Vintage Horizontals 2017 vs 2018: Since Covid didn’t allow for a proper arrivage tasting last year, we tasted the 2017s in direct taste-offs vs their 2018 counterparts this year. All bottles were opened a few hours earlier, not decanted but we got enough time to follow each wine over 45+ minutes in the glass which allowed for proper aeration and analysis. A few observations: 1) The 2017s are disarmingly easy to drink, charming, soft and open. 2) The 2018 show more depth but will need more time to flesh out, open up and become rounder. 3) Best ever Cortons. Slowly but surely they grow into their allocation (not market) price. 4) The showstopping RSVs edge out the Richebourgs with the purest fruit expression vs raw and today a bit unintegrated power. 5) The La Taches and RCs are playing in their own category in terms of complexity but the RCs are a bit closed. 6) The Montrachets are fabulous with a sharp, complex and complete 2017 as a consensus WOTN and a 2018 which is a bit broader but still amazing.

TN: Wow. This was without question the WOTN, not only for me but for every person at our table and every person in the room I talked to. This is such a compelling wine, so complex, hyper precise, ever changing, perfectly harmonious and balanced, superbly fresh and with a great and expanding finish. Super expressive nose with citrus, apple, minerality, round, harmonious, sharp, creamy. On the palate there is a plethora of fruit, minerality, spices, white flowers, saffron, hints of caramel, some Coche like flint aromas. Ever changing. And that finish... it never quits and expands for minutes (!). Just wow. Incredible wine from this great white wine vintage. Close to perfection in my book. What is missing for a triple digit score? I don’t know exactly, maybe the nose could have been a bit more impressive and complex - the palate was definitely perfection.

  • Dégustation Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Verticale 2016, avec Déjeuner (1243 Bourgogne Society - Beaune): Sit-down tasting with Aubert of the 2016 lineup. OK, this isn't from 2016, but we know there is no 2016 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Montrachet. So they brought out the 2017, which thrilled me more than if they served the collaborative 2016 Montrachet.

Delicately floral start with a faint hint of (good?) reduction. Yellow apple with meyer lemon here. Very bright, very 2017 (a white Burgundy vintage that thrills me) in a manner that comes across as less fleshy vs typical Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Montrachet. But at the same time, there is a richness with melon, honeycomb and poached pear character, yet finishing with that meyer lemon and lemon peel. Very good density with beeswax on finish and very good+ length. 95-96+ point potential.
