November in St-Gallen) www.vvwine.ch

  • DRC 2019 Vintage Presentation: Very ripe, almost too sweet for me with pine apple intermixing with the lemon and oak spice notes. Good but I clearly preferred the Corton Charlemagne next to it.

  • Tasted in a arrivage tasting of all DRC 2019. Overall, the 2019s DRC are beautifully perfumed, very ripe wines, but they also carry a nice vein of acidity that is making them brighter and fresh. The bottles show incredible class, but also a certain ripeness that might be something that needs getting used to for purists. I thought that the terroir was showing beautifully, despite the ripeness of the year. The wines seemeed very different and true to their cru, especially at the beginning of the tasting and again with quite some air. In between the differences were just a tiny bit muddled.
The last wine in this epic tasting and one of the most sought after. For me personally, it was a small step down to some of the very best wines on this evening. But it‘s hard on this level to stay objective and not let palate preference play tricks on you.
This is super ripe, opulent, flamboyant and rich. I might have used all the words I know to describe a similar character, you get the picture. Notes of super ripe yellow fruit, some honey, minerality but it is buffered by a wealth of fruit and pure richness, some nuts too, there are also some flowery notes and quite present sweet oak spices at this very early stage. It‘s super full-bodied and rich, with very good persistence, almost phenolic/tannic quality, some medium-high acidity that is completely buffered by the wealth of everything. Excellent length. A probably superb wine, that is very hard for me to judge, as I barely ever drink Montrachet and this seems very very rich and big, which is usually not exactly my thing. Very fascinating wine but I had a clear preference for the Corton-Charlemange, even if it‘s difficult to say which one the better wine is. I feel very privileged to be able to taste this, particularly in the context of its scarcity and insane market value.
