Decanted less than a half hour before drinking. Beautiful nose showing menthol, tobacco, leather, cassis, and with another 15 minutes a candied floral aspect. A fully mature and gorgeous nose. Balanced and delicious - sweet, on the palate and quite complex. But the palate begins to tail off about 45 minutes in, becomes drying on the finish. Nose stays strong though. I’d decant as I did if I were serving for 4 people but would get into it earlier for 2 - palate falls off.
Fully developed, medium-bodied, elegant, fresh, and aromatic, with an aromatic profile of dried flowers, tobacco leaves, cherries, thyme, and crushed rocks. Finesse styled, refined, soft, and vibrant, the elegant, red berry finish leaves you with a touch of salt on top of the fruits. No decanting needed. Pop, pour, and enjoy. Drink from 2024-2034.

Bottle in perfect condition; filled into the neck, cork intact. Translucent medium brick colour. Red fruit, dried dark fruit, prune, cedar, leather, tobacco, sous-bois/ earth and mushroom, graphite, spices, and cinnamon, with medium-level acidity, fully resolved tannin, and very good length. Some old-age sweetness, and umami notes. Smoothly textured and well balanced, with great concentration and good complexity. In great shape! A very satisfying, mature Bordeaux that is drinking very well. Well-kept bottles will stay at this level for a few more years, but since the wine is in a perfect place with no upside, I suggest drinking it now. Enjoy!
Pre-Super Bowl Gentlemen's Dinner (New Jersey, USA): In my cellar since release. Decanted around 3:30pm and served with the second course around 7pm in a flight of 3-1983 Bordeaux. Pretty clean on the nose though a little restrained at first. Lightly chocolatey dark red and black fruit, soft but layered and balanced with decent remaining mineral, acid structure. Also earthy, more on the finish. Nice purity with good balance but also not flamboyant or especially thrilling, though excellent overall. Plenty of life left, quite youthful. If not tasted next to ‘83 Cos and Lalande this would probably have seemed more remarkable. A few of the attendees liked this a touch more than I ranking it 2nd, rather than my 3rd of the flight. Overall, all three wines were very similar and of great quality with nuances separating them. As they sat in the glass, the subtle nuances were visible but initially in the glass they were almost indistinguishable.
Candie's Big 4-0 (Spoon & Stable, Mpls, MN): Very dark red/purple color. Drank a glass from magnum over an hour. Lovely, red raspberries, cherry, charcoal, grpahite and lots mineral character, full and layered, oak, good length.
