  • Popped and poured; luckily, decided to use the Durand as the cork in this particular bottle was both bizarrely rigid and very hard to extract while also cracking throughout removal (bottle stored properly since release). Initially a bit funky on the nose, if not muddy...very little to the palate as well. Decided to decant and aerate a bit, definitely helped the wine to open up a little as the initial funk grew into more interesting aromas of forest floor, saline minerals and a tinge of red fruit. On the palate, notes of red fruits and spices are brightened by racy acidity that somehow stands up to chewy, yet very chalky tannins. Clearly Grand Cru weight but without any of the charisma, this one should keep aging for a month of Sundays if stored in a cold cellar.

  • Drank at Jeff’s wine group event where they toasted Bill. I was not present. I had a previous commitment with Mike,Bobbi and Doc to see Irish Dance Festival at the SORAYA.

  • Burgundy Paulée with the Chevaliers du Tastevin (Chez Mike, East Greenbush, NY): Big rich nose of red fruit. Still young with ripe cherries and a hint of mint or something like that.

  • PnP with Durand - no problems with cork. Medium red with slight browning at the rim. Gorgeous nose of wet stones, dark fruit and spice right away. On the palate this has a silky texture which I rarely find in Corton with medium weight flavors of dark fruit, mineral and spice. Some remaining tannins on the finish which is intense and long. Finally a mature bottle at age 22. A nice example of a great vineyard in an average vintage.

  • {Corton Clos des Corton tasting organized by JL at Black Cat} Decanted at 3pm, served ~ 7 pm. Delicious, ready-to-go Clos des Cortons without the depth or persistence of years with more ripeness and size, but I do not mean to damn the wine with faint praise. Delicious and successful, shows the consistency you expect of a Grand Cru even in a middling or light year. A wine you could pour for neophytes or gourmands who would enjoy it. This bottle was in fine shape and could be held for 5+ more years I think, but probably not much upside left.
