  • Rockstar good wine, despite having just come off of an airplane! It shows sweetness and purity, good intensity without being heavy - very enjoyable.

  • Tasted double blind. Good fill level. True to its nature, this Corton from a great vintage still showed its masculine side with a tannin structure that has not yet fully melted. There was also a pronounced acidity which made the overall experience not perfectly balanced and I generally like my Pinots a touch softer and more feminine. Still, this was a great wine to drink with such a high complexity and a very good precision. Every sip and smell showed new nuances which was very exciting.

TN: Very intense nose full of dark fruits, old leather, forest floor, lots of mushrooms, salt, tobacco, hints of red fruits and floral notes, a bit of cellar stink. Very complex and layered, very powerful but balanced. Very much an exciting, world class nose. On the palate still powerful albeit lighter than the nose would suggest, but still very much full of power, vivacity and tension with a firm tannin structure and a high acidity. The aromatic complexity is very high with all the above mentioned aromas of the nose showing on the palate. So beautifully tertiary with this mushroom aromas paired with tobacco being the highlight, additionally the palate shows an intense minerality and more spices and a nice fruit core. The finish is impressive, long and expanding.

Decanting: Double decanted 2h before consumption but it continue to improve in the glass. This bottle could have needed two hours in the decanter.

    Glass: Zalto Burgundy

  • Double-decanted. Still showing impressive precision. Pretty musty at first, then releasing wood and barnyard, mushrooms and tobacco. Still present red fruit of strawberry. Perfume, spices and cold float along herbal layers of green bell pepper. This needs a while in the glass to dust off the cellar must and the palate was pretty thin leaving too much acidity within a no longer really firm structure. But there was still a beautifully precise fruit core and good tension.

  • Part of a 1978 Burgundy tasting hosted by Acker at Cru on 11/11/09. Faively has the reputation of making wines to last (or if you are cynical, that are perpetually too young. The Corton stll has good color, slightly turning tawny. Strong and powerful
