Tasting Notes for Overlook

(106 notes on 102 wines)

1 - 50 of 106 Sort order
White
with air, this one really blossoms; very clean nose with white flowers, honeysucle and peach. Very good acidity lifts the wine.
The hint of oxidized apples I got upon opening is totally gone. Stellar wine at a very good place now.
Red
A glass while the rest of the bottle goes into a decanter.
Dried herbs, iron; touching on blood, some alcohol on the nose (14%).
High acidity, medium body (expecting this to expand with air), dissolving tannins. Rustic in a delightfully honest way. Will be paired with shanks of lamb in a similarly rustic fashion. Love these bottles that demand time and attention.
Red
Textbook syrah on the nose, fragrant with ripe black berries, black pepper and bacon. Lots of fruit, fine, but marked tannins.
Not that much separating this from the Cornas from Clape beyond a shorter finish. At a great place now, but has stamina to hold for several years in the cellar still.
Red
A seductive nose reveals pencil shavings, forest berries and some sous bois. Fresh and lively in the mouth with some fine grained tannins in the finish. Smells like a fine Bordeaux with some pedigree, but lacks some complexity in the fruit to go completely stellar.
Delivers lots of joy now, feels like it is in a good place at this age. I love Cab Franc with some age and this was a pleasant rendez-vous. Great value!

Red
Ripe fruit, plums, sous bois, dried herbs. Lots of stuffing still, quite firm tannins, but looks like it's on a slow decline towards drying out. Great value though, the oldest barbera I've drunk.
Red
Still feels quite primary in the fruit, ripe strawberries, herbs and hints of oak. A very fine wine for what would have been a steal in today's prices. Not overtly complex in the finish, but beautiful fruit. Will keep well for years to come.
Red
Juicy red fruit, some flowers. Good depth and length on this. A brilliant bojo, will be a joy to follow the next few years.
White
Butter, nuts, lemon, spices. Balanced and fine length in finish. Vibrant acidity, great with a heated Mont d'or. A fine specimen of a village Meursault from a great vintage. At a very good place now.
White
On decanter for several hours. Lemon, sea spray, hint oak and smoke. Concentrated fruit, elegant, vibrant acidity. Great stuff.
Red
Deep fruit, both red and black on the nose. Some oak, but very well integrated in what appears to be a very complete wine. Nothing sticks out or appears to be mislocated. Very good concentration and acidity, but the fruit quality is supreme for this vintage. Drinking well now, will hold for many years to come. Masterful wine.
Red
Fragrant nose of strawberries, raspberries, earth and flowers. Serious acidity, fine tannins in finish. Fruit a little muted at this stage, will probably perform even better with a little cellaring. Great bojo!

Dried out and way beyond saving... These bottles never cease to disappoint.

Red
Quick decant. Red and black fruit, flowers, fresh and juicy, with a serious streak to it. Really fine depth in the fruit, will be interesting to revisit in a few years.
White
Very appealing nose, classic Chablis. Pure and clean with lemon, seabreeze, Elegant style, reminds me of Raveneau. It got a bit broader with air, great mouthfeel too, just a little bit short in the finish, but this is a great value Chablis. At a very good place now.
White
Light colour with a greenish tint. Decanted for 2 hours. Classic PYCM-reduction on the nose, smoke, lemon, sea minerals. Pure and clean, almost a Chablis-nose. Medium bodied, still a bit restrained, good persistence in the finish. Will keep well for several years, but is very appealing now as well.
Red
Tart red fruit on the nose. Flowers, red cherry, some pepper. Herbal in a pleasant way. Very fresh and juicy, primary notes of cherry, red currant, raspberry. I love the acidity, very primary, uncomplicated fruit, reminiscent of a good beaujolais cru.
White
Decanted 1 hour. Slightly smoky nose, lemon, peach, stone. Salty acidity with very nice grip. Not too ripe fruit that the vintage sometimes produced. Very good wine and a great value. Will keep well.
Red
Alluring expensive nose, quite deep, still hints of oak. Rather dark fruit. Full and rich, but with some structure in the finish. I will keep my next bottle for a while, but no crime to drink it now. Quite long and concentrated finish.

Red
Very Chambolle on the nose, roses, sweet strawberries, pretty and delightful. (Decanted, then back to bottle). More serious on the palate, some semi-rough tannins in the finish. Quite tight still. I think this has more potential with cellaring, but very fine nose indeed.

Opened a bottle to bring to a tasting. Decanted it, but found it tannic and rather unpleasing. Back to bottle and into the fridge. Three days later I remembered it. And the beast had become much more pleasurable.
Dried flowers, tar, spices, dried fruits, mushroom. The fruit has now found it's place, the tannins (though still there) are much better integrated. A rather pleasurable surprise for a Tuesday evening. These wines seems to need a lot of air still when they're ok. (Had one oxidized). Corks are a disaster, small and not of top quality. Unsure if I will wait too long with the next bottles, but give it lots of air!

2018 Miani Friulano Friuli Colli Orientali (view label images)
Ripe fruit, peach, pungent flowers, some heat on the nose. Benefits from some air. Rich and full mouthfeel, almost oily, very concentrated. Medium acidity, full body. Will be interesting to keep in cellar for a while. Very good quality.

Red
Dark and spicy fruit, black currant, blueberries, some tones of oak. Firm tannins in the finish. Not very developed. Very fine concentration, will keep for many years to come.
Red
Very good juice. Red fruit on the nose, hint of bell pepper and something spicy. Maybe a bit lower on intensity from last time I sampled this one, might be in a phase. Will wait with the last bottles to see what it might become.

White
Decanted for one hour. Leaves of black currant, herbs, lemon.
High acidity, pretty tight still, but broading out in the finish. Ideally you'd wish for a longer, more complex finish, might come with more age. The acidity stands out, really fresh and invigorating!

Red
Decanted approx one hour. Earthy, strawberries, stone. Really open and intriguing nose, detailed and complex.
Beautifully balanced with mouthwatering acidity, lots of fruit and finegrained tannins in a long finish.
Always appreciated this wine from De Montille as it is not what you think of as the 'classic' Pommard in the more rustic style, but with a very delicate, 'sexy pinot' nose and a rather smooth mouthfeel. Drinking beautifully now, will also hold for many years.

Complex balsamic nose with mushrooms, earth, hint tar, rosehip and red berries. Med + acidity, mouthcoating, but very finegrained tannins. Elegant, but the tannins still has a grip. Like a good Barolo in structure. Fine length, a very good wine which still can be cellared for several years.
Red
Developing nose, hint of some VA, earthy, red fruit. Tightens up in the glass. Cloudy, dried herbs, more cherries in the mouth. Med + acidity, good grip from tannins in finish. Benefits from decanting, can easily be kept in the cellar for several more years. Great value, very good wine.

A positive surprise this. Left alone in the cellar as these wines need time and I've struggled to enjoy the 04's with their green aromas.
This one is developing on the nose, still green herbs and a minty balsamic tone, but more complex with forest floor, hint leather. Fine, mouthcoating tannins as expected from this producer (would have guessed Pommard if blind). With air the fruit comes more forward and it feels much more in place than for ten years ago.
White
2017 Bernhard Huber Malterdinger Weiss Baden Chardonnay Blend, Chardonnay (view label images)
Decanted one hour. Reductive nose, matchstick, sulfur. Smoke, some oak, lemon, grapefruit, white peach. Salty acidity, med + body. A bit short in the finish, but a fine wine indeed. Will be interesting to taste this again after a few years.
White
Golden yellow. A bit darker in color than hoped for, but the wine was still well alive. Developed nose with ripe apples (hint oxidised) honey and wax. Minerals and a hint of caramel. Med + acidity gives the wine a fresh appearance in the mouth. Ripe apples, honey and oak in the aftertaste. Good complexity, noticeable alcohol in the finish. Based upon this bottle, I wouldn't keep this for much longer, don't see this one improving with time.
Red
Dried herbs, leather, cured meat, black pepper, dark fruit. Nicely developed, in a good place now. Full bodied, med + acidity. Not the longest finish, but all in all a very good wine, for a fraction of the price of the legendary domaine wines. Giving these about 10-15 years in the cellar makes perfect sense...

White
Decanted for two hours. Pineapple, lemon, lime, white flowers, slate. The residual sweetness is noticeable, but very well balanced with the high acidity. Pretty complex nose, good concentration. Will hold for many years to come, but very good now.
Red
2007 Château d'Angludet Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend (view label images)
Black currant, graphite, cedar, slightly herbacious. Some development. Shows rather well now, given the vintage, lacking some power in the mid-palate, but rather enticing on the nose. A bit drying and short finish, but still I find it a pleasant surprise.
Can't see much need to keep this one for much longer, worked very well with game.

Pnp, the rest in a decanter for the evening. Leaning towards red fruits, tart cherries, raspberries, bacon. Fresh, waited for the fruit to come more forward with air, but it stayed much the same during the evening. Smooth tannins. Great value, honest wine.
White
Bright and lemony, with a clear acidic backbone. White flowers. Could easily guessed 1.cru Chablis with this nose, the stellar vintage shining through.
Broader in mouthfeel though, and builds weight with air. Still very crisp and cool after 2. hours. Screw cap on this one, but this cannot mean that it should be drunk early. Will try my next one in a few years. Very good.
Red
Slight decant before tasting. Red, savoury fruit, hint of oak, ripe berries, but still with a cool climate-feel to it. Balanced, with good acidity and very fine, but present tannins. In a very fine place now, very harmonious and elegant. Really good!
Red
This one was in dire need of air. Rather harsh and bitter upon opening, no fruit and acidic finish. After a couple of hours with air the fruit has appeared and filled in the blanks, but still a bit dumb on the nose.
Second day it has started to release a serious and beautiful bouquet with red cherries, herbs and a hint of sous bois. Med+ acidity, mouth-filling fruit, elegant, ripe fruit and very fine tannins. Beautifully balanced, maybe a bit short in the finish, but this one needs time.
Will keep remaining bottles for 5 years +, and looking very much forward to follow it.

White
Tropical nose, ripe apples, apricots, pungent flowers. Medium acidity, appears as off-dry with a tighter finish with grapefruit and red orange.
Heavy on the fruit, probably more to my taste a few years ago, but no shame in drinking this now. Doubt further cellaring will be of interest.
Red
Decanted for 3 hours. Stunning nose with dark fruit, black pepper, balsamic, cool and poised. Still feels quite primary. Great concentration, full bodied and long. Pretty firm tannins in finish. A great wine with lots of potential for the future.

Pnp, but benefits from air in the glass. Reminiscent of a dark syrah on the nose with dark fruit, spices, barnyard, animal fur and leather. Developing, but still surprisingly young. Very nice, but still firm tannins in a medium long aftertaste. Will hold my last bottle of this a few more years, but drinking really nice now.
Red
Decanted two hours. Red berries, hint of coffee, quite primary aromas still. Not as lush as your average 09 in the mouth. A bit rustic finish, the fruit still somewhat hidden beneath a layer of tannins. Don't know where to go with that, but will keep second bottle for a while.
Red
Decanted two hours. Pure syrah fruit on the nose, black berries, black pepper. A very delicate, elegant, yet serious wine. Easily mistaken for a Côte Rôtie blind. Still very young. A marvellous wine at the price.

Red
Red berries, chalk minerals, not very developed. Fresh and juicy, more reminiscent of a Chambolle than Vosne, but good concentration. Needs decanting.
White
Bright seaspray, iodine, green apples from the start. Unmistakably Chablis. Gains weight with air and riper fruit develops. Drinking very nicely now, but no rush really. A great qpr this, but benefits from cellaring.
White
On decanter for about an hour. Ripe fruit on the nose, something reminiscent of botrytis, peach, apricot, wet stone. Very good acidity, medium body and brighter fruits on the palate. Seems ready to go at this stage, but can probably last another decade if that's your preference. Great match with a rich asparagus soup with Västerbotten-cheese.
Red
Opens up sound, but with fragile fruit. Left to breathe for two hours. The fruit has now built up very nicely. Tar, dried herbs, dried flowers. Very nice bouquet. Fine-grained tannins. Not overtly complex, but a nice surprise from the cellar. See no reason to wait any longer with this one, but give it air!

Not showing well, some found hints of TCA, some didn't, but the fruit was all gone, leaving just a vague impression of what could have been.

White - Sparkling
Broad shoulders straight from the bottle. Creamy mouthfeel with very fine bubbles. Some caramel, coffee, camphor, ripe apples. Rich and mineral at the same time. Med+ length. Really good, and at a sweet spot now.
