Double decanted two hours before service; the fill was base neck and the cork was sound. Surprisingly youthful appearance, with a hint of bricking at the rim. Notes of dried dark fruits, cigar box, roasted fennel, and forest floor; very savory character. Outstanding balance, with excellent focus and grip, fully integrated tannins, and a long and well delineated finish. I’d say this beauty still has another 10+ years at full maturity.

This was drunk at a restaurant with friends, and was drunk side-by-side against a '90 Pichon Baron. This wine was in its prime and it still had a lot of fruit. It was a textbook example of a properly aged right bank Bordeaux. The tannins were finely resolved, the body was full, and this was a totally elegant wine. The table liked this wine better than the '90 Pichon Baron. This is a great wine that one can sit on for at least another 10 years.

Beginning to fade but still wonderful. This bottle better than the one (from same case) I had a few months ago but at this age bottle variation to be expected. This bottle had a very good level.
Beautiful, mid-weight wine firmly ensconced in its peak drinking window. The aromatics stole the show with vestiges of red and blue fruit, sous-bois, Ceylon tea, iodine, tobacco and cedar. Lovely balance. This flowed seamlessly across the palate with well-judged acidity providing energy to a long cedar-infused finish. An hour of air and this bottle showed at its best.
Decanted an hour and this was absolutely singing. Still so much to go here. Young but not primary - just in a perfect place. Such balance of fruit, tannin, acidity. Texturally very pleasing. Red fruit, blue fruit, pencil, tobacco, cedar. Love the Merlot influence in these right bank Pomerols. Last bottle and will have to find more of these. Just wow.

Right Bank Bordeaux Tasting: Tasted single blind. Wow. Knock out nose. Lovely mature aged Bordeaux. Had this not been a right bank tasting, I would have called this left bank. Perfectly aged, wonderful aromas, touch of brett, fully resolved long finish. Awesome!

Recently purchased from a wine merchant here in the Bay Area. I've had this many times in the past and loved it. Couldn't resist another shot. Bad idea!!
Upon opening was thin with the an opaque color. Uh oh. Decanted. After an hour it was even worse. Was hoping it would improve, nope.
Cork and bottle fill perfect. Seems it was not stored well, get the feeling in a closest somewhere.
This experience has cemented my feeling to never buy aged wine again. I have such a large cellar its simply not needed. Will see if I can track down the invoice and contact the seller for selling this crap! I have a feeling whoever sold it to the merchant knew it was bad.....
This is consistent to my review from a year ago. It has the structure to stay here for a couple of decades. It doesn't quite reach the levels of the 1975, 1982, and 1998, but is a superlative wine. It does need an hour in the decanter to blow barnyard funk.

Ripe, deep and rich fruit, silky and bright. Drinking perfectly at the moment with a little bit of air, but has the bones to continue at this level for quite some time.

Smoky black plum, incense, mocha. Great texture and body, With air there is just a hint of 1990 roasted notes, only thing keeping it from greatness. B+/A-

Similar to my last 2 bottles with respect to maturity in both color, smell and taste. No decant and none recommended. Drunk over the course of dinner with a friend and absolutely mature and should be drunk now. Very pleasant bottle of wine. Can't say I would advocate the current tariff but to each their own.

Ripe and dried cranberries, mulberries, strawberry jam, tobacco, cedar, leather, bit of underbush, some graphite and farmyard note.
Still have some grippy tannins, need some air to soften. Just medium bodied and precise, this elegant 1990 Evangile boosts a lingering finish with complex flavours of red date, English tea, savoury earth, graphite and tobacco. Fantastic.
No rush to drink up.

This started out a tad pedestrian, but just like the last bottle, it gained so much complexity with air. This had more fruit, which allowed it to really blossom towards the end. Just awesome. The 95 next to it started out better but trailed off.

My second of 3 bottles, and almost 12 months since the first, this was an improved experience from a year ago. The reason was extended aeration with 4 hours in an open decanter. I have recently started to decant older wines again for at least a couple of hours following a period of going for a splash decant or a shorter time of air. It is a matter of personal preference, but I find it works for myself. The decanter time blew off barnyard funk and left a stunning mature Pomerol at the top of its game with a smoky nose packed with ripe red cherry and vanilla with underlying beefy notes. The palate is nicely robust with balanced tannin which reminds you are drinking a top notch Bordeaux. The finish is decent and harmonious, but on the shorter side. I probably will look to finish the last bottle over the next couple of years whilst it is at its absolute peak, as I suspect that that this does not have structure of the 1975 and 1982 to continue at this sustained level.

Poured late in the evening, which was a shame as this warranted more attention than it got. Super-expressive fully mature Pomerol with a big aromatic punch of carob, truffle, and freshly turned soil.

Acker Pre-Auction September 2022 (Redbury Lounge): This wine definitely won in the Bordeaux for me. It was drinking great. Dark fruits and secondary notes and everything bright and open and just drinking very very well. Excellent wine.

Pomerol night (Chicago, IL): An absolutely wow wine. Admittedly a bit simplistic next to the 1989, but what it lacks in the nuance and complexity this makes up for in its singular clarity of fruit. Powerful and primary, with a clear black plum note on the nose and palate, with sweet fruit giving this a very broad texture on the palate. For my taste, this is drinking at an absolutely incredible spot right now, though there's no doubt that there's ample further aging potential here. Probably my favourite bottle tonight.

6 hours of slow-ox in a wine serving basket inside a wine fridge. It was served before dinner and without food. A stunning Bordeaux for a bygone era. Subtle and fully integrated tertiary flavour. At its peak, won’t improve. DRINK.

Decanted for 2 hours and was very funky until hour 3. Kept trying to approach it but it was giving me tons of barnyard and funky smelling horse. This all blew off in the third hour. Have some patience with this. It is a special wine. The drinking window extends to 2030 IMHO.
48x 1990 (37x Bdx, 6x Napa, 5x others): A fabulous quartet of 1990 Pomerols side by side showed incredibly strong. With a lot of typicality, these wines are so sensual and hedonistic and at the same time very elegant. Winner was a complex and complete Petrus (96 pts), a touch ahead of the intense and still young Lafleur (95 pts) and nicely matured, complex Evangile (95 pts). The Trotanoy (93 pts) was a tad weaker as it showed less substance compared to the others. I’m sure, following these wines over an evening would have been great and the scores would be higher. All 4 wines were a bit shy on the nose and only started singing with additional time in the glass and swirling.
TN: Rather dark and slightly dusty nose, tobacco, black truffle, herbs and minerality. Quite nice but not perfectly precise. On the palate this is so creamy, so soft and elegant with meaty notes, red berries, very floral, everything is not too ripe but very fresh, additional notes of herbs, minerality, tobacco and spices. So feminine and elegant, balanced and with melted tannins and good freshness. Wow.
Decanting: Quick double decant three+ hours prior to the tasting to remove sediment. This would have needed more time in the decanter. 2-3 hours at least.

Supremely disappointed. Was blown away by a much more recent vintage (2016?) at a restaurant, and the somm said the 1990 would really amaze me. I don't know if my bottle was flawed or otherwise had aged badly, but it seemed 10+ years past peak to me -- not a lot of liveliness, mostly tobacco type flavors. I probably should have given it decanter time to open up.

A beautiful Pomerol in its peak drinking window, it does need a couple of hours in the decanter to blow off barnyard funk. The nose is packed with ripe berry fruit and leather with some wafts of vanilla. The palate is well balanced and is developed. I do concur with another reviewer that the finish, although a decent length, is a little dry and does prevent a higher rating. I would question whether this is a wine for the long haul, and my instinct is that it needs to be drunk over the next 5 years to enjoy it at its best.

This L’Evangile I found a bit reticent, but is quietly classy with caressing luxurious and subtle menthol notes, it is refined and long. However, I was hoping for more fireworks, a bit more va-va vroom.

Po's 1990 Bordeaux dinner (La Trompette): Not hugely expressive or giving. Smoke and damp undergrowth on the nose. Reasonable power on the palate but it felt a bit tucked in. Sherberty red fruit and a truffley finish. Nice wine, but overpowered by the Trotanoy tonight.

Abbot Street Delights (Abbot Street, Ngaio, Wellington, New Zealand): I do not want to rate this wine, as it performed well below expectation, and certainly less-well than a bottle drunk 18 months ago. Very mature hue, frail, starting to become disjointed, and lacking in focus. It is a good wine, that is showing very mature character, but may have seen some heat damage in the past, or perhaps the cork did not have a perfect seal. If I was to give it a score, it would be in the low to mid 80s, but the extraordinary experience of this wine the year before last suggests that this wine is not typical (I certainly hope so!). Just prove the adage there are no great wines, only great bottles...

My comments would be similar to the bottle drunk in 2018. The color was perhaps a little more vibrant, but this was definitely a mature bottle if not a mature wine and I don't know where these bottles bought from a retailer in 2014 spent their formative years. That said, it was a delight to drink and again testament to what only aging can do for good red wine. All 4 of us greatly enjoyed the wine, including fans of huge new world reds and my wife who often is not fond of the French barnyard. Wine is quite soft with tannins gone and slight port-like qualities, but mostly sweet red fruit and modest earthiness. If you have these, I would drink up and enjoy. I don't believe time will improve them

Bordeaux 1990 horizontal tasting (Fribourg): 1990 Bordeaux horizontal hosted by a private collector. 30 years down the road, the vintage comes across as bold and muscular, youthful and in general not yet open for business or at times closed. Highlighs included Figeac, Haut-Brion, Mouton, Calon Ségur – and to my surprise – Marquis de Terme. See tasting story for more take-aways and the complete line-up.
Tasting note Not overly expressive, quite restrained fruit, but if you look long enough you‘ll find fresh red raspberry and a bit of strawberry in the mix. Unexciting palate with slightly coarse tannin and acidity that didn't fit well with a lack of texture. At its current stage, the weakest showing of an Evangile I've had so far.
Single Blind 1990 Bordeaux (The Bristol - Chicago, IL): Mature plum nose with some moderate notions of herb. Plump fruit on the palate with resolved structure. Less intense finish. Solid but this bottle's best days are past.

1990 Bordeaux Dinner (The Bristol - Chicago IL): Single blind at 1990 Bordeaux dinner. Darn, this seemed ripe but slightly tiring. I think I gave this too much air because of schedule problems (open 4 hours, 1 in decanter). Still on the rugged side.

Surprisingly light maroon at the edge already and loosening up a bit on the palate. Nevertheless the bouquet is reassuring lovely and the wine fruity in the red cherry, red berry register that marks out Merlot in Pomerol. Tender tannins, decent acidity. It’s very nice for sure but lacks the intensity and energy of the great 1982 vintage.

Good, but not nearly as great as the 90 Evangile can be. Unfortunately the 90 Evangile seems to be quite variable (or I have been unlucky). This particular bottle shows blackberry, herbaceous notes, and mineral without the richness or complexity that better bottles show.

My contribution at a Commanderie BYO event. Last bottle from a batch bought at auction 10+ years ago. Some amazing bottles opened on this evening. Survived an early scare where I thought the wine might be off or corked, after about 10 minutes the early funk blew off and the wine was where it should be.
Notes from 2 years ago:"Deep ruby color, mild separation. Nose of red fruits, truffle pencil/graphite, underbrush and violets. Palate showing dusted black fruits, plums, pomegranate, floral notes, and baking spice. Velvety texture, classic Right Bank wine. Medium weight, long finish that showed secondary notes of red fruits and spice."
Consistent with those notes from flavor profile. Texture was classic Pomerol with this wine, plush and elegant. Tannins a bit softer than I remember last bottle. Well stored bottles have a good life ahead of them. Hard to predict but my guess is I think this will be at its best over next 5 years

This particular bottle is the best example of 1990 L'Evangile I've had with lots of intense, Perigord-truffle, mineral, smoky, gamey notes accenting its deep black fruit base. Delicious on the palate with terrific depth and persistence on the finish. A wild, exciting wine in that way that L'Evangile can be. This is likely at its apogee now, but bottles like this are in no imminent danger of decline.

Nose: Massive perfumed nose of Black Cherry, Fig, Plum, Truffles and Woodsmoke. Layers in its complexities of earth, clay and herbs as it sat in the decanter. Palate: Silky on entry, but retained a nice bit of glycerin adding weight. More dark fruit, plum, black truffle and woodsy spice. Shows the wilder side of Pomerol for sure. Finish: Very compeling and delivers a 50+ second finish of cedar, smoke, truffle and black fruit.
What a wine. This has delivered big 2x for me this year. Lovely right now.

Gorgeous. Dark color and per Som another 20-30 years of life. Lots of earth and mineral on the nose with spices and some plum, anise. Lots of red fruit on the palate and finish. Smooth tannins and just got better and better as it aerated. My first L’Evangile, the 1990 was a beautiful bottle (in magnum, which is always better!)

Right upon PNP you could tell that this was going to be special. Sweet truffle, leather and plum aromas wafted off the neck of the bottle. I allowed it to open for approximately 40-minutes in the decanter
Nose: Perfumed, huge nose of Cherry, truffle, cedar, plum, chocolate, woodsmoke and roasted berry notes. Precise and expressive of Pomerol in a very indulgent way. Palate: Broad and layered in the mouth giving cherry, plum skin, shaved truffles, chocolate and cedar. Touches of raspberry sauce and floral notes as well. Complex and multi-dimensional to the final sip. Finish: remains resonant bringing back many mid-palate notes for well over 45-seconds on the finish.
This was consumed from 375 and had spent much of its life in an excellent cellar. These have years ahead.

I was somewhat concerned when decanting as the colour was very brick orange and faded. No issues though. Classic Pomerol. Drinking perfectly and fully mature. This wine will not get any better with age and I believe that the window will last another 10 years.....but why wait.

During the year end Gala Dinner of the Commanderie de Bordeaux Hong Kong with Domaines Rothschild CEO Jean-Guillaume Prats present as guest host. From Magnum. Another great Evangile of the night. A great showing. Classic Pomerol; ripe and flamboyant with bright floral and sandalwood-like spiciness accenting the plush fruit here, and more savoury earthy bass notes emerging on the back end. The texture is beautiful - really polished and graceful with the tannin mostly integrated, and this captures pretty much everything I love about right bank Bordeaux.

HDH Bordeaux Auction; 11/9/2018-11/10/2018 (Chicago, IL): Fitting for the season, without a doubt. Autumnal on the nose, with incredible perfume -- a hint of cabernet franc, some plush fruit, a bit of dried figs, and some crispy autumn leaves. The palate shows a hint of smoke, as well as gentle fruit, earth, and dried leaves. It's plush, and doesn't show any overripe pruney notes, but plenty of generous dried fruit. Perfumed and delicate, and extremely delicious. At prime now for my palate.

deepish purple color still after all these years, plums and dark spice on the nose, hints of oak, secondary earth notes, on the palate the fruit is quite sweet and still going at full throttle but this does appear to be passing peak now, a long finish that is just showing hints of hardening at the tail end, lovely meat and cherry tones with time, still a beauty but I would drink this soon, I suspect as it goes into decline it may follow the path of the formerly magnificent 1988- meaning it will retain much of its core scale, but become somewhat hard. ****, now to 2025

Poured into a decanter to serve. Beautiful nose has cedar wood, tobacco and sweet currant. Palate has the merlot sweetness and silky tannins. The finish has a tiny bit of bitterness but not bothering. Drinking at peak now but certainly will stay at this plateau for a while.

Well-aged with good flavors of smoky black fruits and truffles but a bit lean for what I’m looking for in aged Pomerol. Don’t get me wrong, this is elegant and well-made but lacks the expansive texture and excitment of the best wines from this commune, at least in this vintage.
Upon opening we thought the bottle was off. Bricking in color and musty smell. Brought to restaurant along with a backup and gave both to Som to decide. Backup was given back and we were told not to worry. After three hour bottle decant this was amazing. Loads of truffle, some leather, and some forest floor. Complete Bordeaux!

Color still very good, ruby red with only a tiny look of age. Nose is so enticing, with black cherry but overtones of tar, creosote and eucalyptus. Almost perfumed, as with time in the glass, more floral, wildflower scents came across. Palate very nice. Light. Notes of cedar with all the dark fruit. Lingers but subtle. Very good but not quite...

A wild Pomerol; fur, truffle, smoke, blood accenting the plummy and raspberry fruit. A bit of a let down for a top name from 1990 as this never really seems to hit top-gear. The constituent parts aren't quite well enough knitted together. Engaging, but not enchanting.

From a bottle purchased on release, this wine had a red/purple center and oranging rims. The medium intensity nose showed classic Bordeaux must at first and not much more. After 5 hours of air, this wine showed a medium+ intensity nose of plums, mocha, black cherries, and tan spices.
This wine was pretty simple in the mouth for several hours. It was always light and rounded. However, as it aired, the tannins grew from being essentially absent to light, rounded, and attractive. The acidity became more pronounced and fine-grained. The finish also picked up considerable length.
This wine was attractively made. However, I would have to say that this seemed to lack the weight and complexity of the '82. Moreover, it is far from clear that this wine will improve. However, it is an attractive wine that will certainly last for 2+ more decades. If you don't give it 5+ hours in a decanter, before you start drinking it, you will short change your experience.

Mostly Older Bordeaux: Incredible, spice, rich plummy fruit but carried with great class, with ample but supple tannin lurking below. The best 1990 Right Banks are so exotic and beautiful but still subtle and balanced, the proverbial steel fist in a velvet glove wrapped in a silk handkerchief, and this is one of the best

Still magnificent and opulent, very open on the nose after a 30 min decant. Exotic and erotic with kinky leather, tea, kirsch and touch of undergrowth and red bell peppers (in a good and balanced way). Great mouthful, still full of glycerin and full of life. Magnificent drinking now but glad I still have 17 left in the cellar as no rush to drink.

Mature, and serving up a liberal dose of sweet plum, truffle and cocoa, the tannins show their soft, silky side, finishing with elegant cherries in the end note. This is at full maturity, if you have a bottle, there is no need to wait to pop a cork.

L'Evangile v. L'Eglise Clinet (Tocqueville): Beautiful and expressive bouquet of eucalyptus, gamey meats, mint, menthol, leathers, and ripe black cherry. Red roses. Palate is fully developed and features some tertiary notes. Soft red cherry. In a great place for drinking right now but can certainly hold on longer. Wine of the night spanning l'Evangile and l'Eglise Clinet from 2010 to 1989, slightly more expressive and with better energy than the '89 l'Evangile. Very pretty, very elegant, very good.

1989/1990 Right Bank Bordeaux tasting (Vienna Cafe & Wine Bar): Charming. This continues to be a really unique wine from l’Evangile. This was quite different from the other wines at the tasting. Red fruits, chocolate and sous bois. A bit lighter on the palate, almost seeming Burgundian at times. Still has noticeable tannic structure, with its ultra-soft tannins. High acidity creating a nice brightness on the finish. This is a very charming wine, especially if you like the light, elegant style. While some have reported bottle variation with this wine, this wine was spot-on with the last bottle tasted several months ago.

A very nice Pomerol. Perhaps it is coming off of its peak, as was alluded by previous notes. A really nice nose of plum, cherry, iron, sous bois, and chocolate. Soft and supple, but not as concentrated as one might expect. Medium-plus finish. A lighter style for l'Evangile.

Last bottle and I probably won't buy more. I've had this wine three times to date and although I'm a huge fan of L'Evangile, I believe this wine is at the tail end of its drinking window. Evolved tawny color, nice nose of plums, sweet tobacco, mocha, spices and soft entry on the palate. Medium bodied, decent red and black fruits, a bit square, and finishes abruptly with tannins well integrated. Not flabbergasting. I much prefer the 85 and the 05, and even the 99 and the 02.

Going downhill by my book. Tried this wine for the first time 4 years ago and it was in much better shape. Opened and decanted, aerated for two hours and drank over another two hours. Bricking throughout like a tawny port. Nice nose of plums, spice cake, on the palate silky entry but slightly disappointing and thin mid palate, dusty finish with dry tannins overshadowing the fruit. The fruit faded after two hours in the decanter signalling the wine might be on its way to declining.

Mature, with the patina of aged silk in its texture, a nose of floral, truffle, plums and cherries and soft, fresh, clean, but not quite exciting, slightly dusty finish. The wine was very good, but it seems to lack the level of excitement expected from a 1990 Pomerol. I'm happy to drink what I have, but I would not buy more to replace them when they are gone.

Second bottle from the case, and same as the first. Very muted on both nose and palate. Had been decanted for about 30 mins before drinking. If it was not 24 years old I would have said it was in a closed phase. Left in glass for up to another 90 mins but it started to fade well before then. Disappointing.

A finesse styled charmer, which is probably slightly better with its ostentatious nose, than on its silky, soft, spicy, medium/full bodied, elegant, silky palate.

Definitely flawed, which is really a shame. I opened and took a small taste at home before heading out to restaurant. I had my doubts then, and brought a back up bottle. We decanted right before drinking and you could immediately tell something was off. It was not a full fledged corking, but this was muted and thinning. The underlying substance occasionally poked through, but ultimately a major disappointment considering how excited I was to try this.

Nice wine. Ripe, as you would expect from the vintage. Nice fruit, very easy to drink. Perhaps missing one gear to take it to the next level. A little tighter structure and it would be really superb.

No need to decant. Opens quickly in the glass. Heady aromas of roses and tar. Silky smooth, all tannins resolved. Long on the palate, but not as effusive or complex as a few years ago. Still fresh, but past prime drinking.

Phoenix Society Inaugural Dinner (Chez Moi): Consistent notes with my last bottle: Garnet in colour. A fantastic nose of cedar, undergrowth--"old Bordeaux". Opened several hours in advance of dinking. Medium bodied, sexy mouthfeel, beautiful balance, good fruit. Drink soon.

Very much wow stuff. Easily my favorite of the Bordeaux at the table with a stunning aroma combining red fruits, cedar, spice, sandalwood, and other exotic spicy and floral notes, and a palate that's all silken elegance and finesse. So polished and easy to drink, just a stunning wine that seems to be at peak.

Showing some age, with a brick rim and garnet core. Lovely acidity and tannin. The structure has receded to something quite sexy. Complex on the nose and palate. Cedar, black fruits, spices. The only knock on the wine is a bit of a lack of fruit. This wine was fabulous at 18 to 20 years of age. Drink up.

Experience similar to last bottle, just not as advertised.. The cabernet based 90's are drinking better and with more fruit than this baby..maybe its a 100 point wine in the waiting? Had it alongside 85 Cos and the Cos was softer, more drinkable, all around better wine.

Classy wine. Bright color, good mouth feel, with excellent flavors that last for a good minute. No time to decant, but still delicious. No rush to drink, has a good 15-20 left, but still ok to open a bottle

1990 ANYTHING Dinner (Our house): Drank over 3 hours. Brilliant showing for this wine. Bright red fruit, violets, rose petals and some earth on the nose and palate. Incredibly fresh and just danced over your tongue. Long finish. Great grip and energy.

Slight discolouration, pretty dark centre, glowing and bright. Menthol, herbs on the nose, red fruit, smoky, bright and complex, intriguing. On the palate round and lush fruit, quite rich and sweet, good grip and acidity, decent length. Certainly not the most refined and complex, and with limited ageing potential. 92-93

Still youthful despite its orange rim. Full and moderately concentrated. Seems like it has some cabernet in the blend. Decent finish. The only negative is its relative lack of complexity.

Opened late but decanted. Early sips revealed a gentle, gentle nose of rosé and tobacco, but the mouth was still tight. Drank another bottle while waiting (a Lazio white, strange creature but simple) and after 2 hours l'Evangile revealed herself but to be supple, smooth, nicely age softened but absolutely bold with Pomerol favors of blackberry, herb. Powerful mid-mouth and 60 second+ finish.
In short an amazing wine. I'll be looking for more.

Medium color with minimal fading. Dill, olive and menthol. Perfect weight, fine acidity, a sense of ripeness without declaring which fruit exactly, and some definite expresso toward the end. Delightful poise, balance, and elegance with something in reserve for the next 5-10 years.

Aging nicely. All components in balance. Loved this wine about six years ago. Now I like it and recognize how it has aged. Lots of nice nuances. Had with rack of lamb. Last bottle. So sad

Drunk with Raj and Emily at the BAB with a nice roast lamb rack. Still broodingly dark, this is immediately open on the nose like liquid Rhianna- ripe, fruity, leather and kinky. Beat that description JK! Lovely lush ripe cherry fruit tinged with dark chocolate and spices. This is all integrated and balanced and has an exotic element without being atypical for Pomerol. Wow, this is still got years of pleasure giving ahead of it. Yummy.

Fabelhaft.

A great wine that was well stored. In the second half of the drinking plateau. The tannins are mostly resolved. A small amount of tannins remain which leads me to believe this wine could last 6 years without a problem. Beautiful aromas and wonderful depth that matched very well with the duck. A great wine!

Crazy good! I've had a few 100 point wines and must say this wine, at this dinner/date/company was their equal. Decanted and poured straight away the nose was phenomenal, dark to the rim, glyceriny and captivating. In the mouth it was rich, sweet and just delicious (sorry for the lack of adjectives). The majority of my Bordeaux are left bank, with a preference for St Julien and I've always wondered what the fuss, and pricing, with left bank was about. This bottle was an eye-opener.

Surprise hit. Mature but fresh. Very exacting flavors in the glass. Nothing like the other reviews. Good stuff. Dark color to the rim, better and better as it sits in the glass. My guess, bottle variation- In some ways better then the 90 Petrus?

Darn my judgement, and some auction sellers! The cork on this one was excellent, with no signs of seepage...not even close. However, poured a medium pinot noir-like blood red with tawny edges, with yet another over-the-hill Bordeaux nose of tomato leaves, blood and iron. Palate much the same, though slightly better than the first flawed bottle, which isn't saying much. Two more bottles, and I greatly doubt that we're going to experience a CT average of 93.4 points, or anywhere close. Shoot!

Drank over 2 hours. A bright nose dominated by violet jumps from the glass. Followed by black fruit and plenty of earth and wood spice. The palate matches with black fruit, plums, earth, chocolate, coffee and cedar. Very ripe and expressive. Light, yet full. Great, but the finish, while nice and long, seemed to not match up to the nose, attack and mid palate. A great wine and another enjoyable 1990 Pomerol.

Soft, squishy capsule, and confirmed by the fully soaked, seeping cork (though entirely under capsule). Poured a brick red with tawny edges, and a nose of tomato leaf, rhubarb and iron. Same on the palate, undrinkable. Decanted overnight, however, and its appearance and palate had improved enough to use in a great rendition of beef burgundy, so all was not lost in this expensive bottle.

For me, this fine Merlot based wine unfortunately had overwhelming Brettiness that prevented the full expression of the nice fruit qualities that were trying to peek through; as soon as I noted this, a winemaker friend sitting next to me made the comment the Brett was secondary for him and he was still able to delineate more of what the wine had to offer; since my notes are simply an expression of my experience, detecting and commenting on flaws is still just a personal opinion and a matter of perception which varies from person to person and time to time.

Very classic mature Bordeaux. Nose was pretty intense typical maturing Bordeaux with nice tertiary notes within the massive dark fruit content. Very well balanced on the palate. Lots of minerality and great structure overall. Tannins fully friendly at this point, but still there and helping give an edge to this full-bodied palate. Nice persistent finish.

Shockingly, this showed much better from a 375ml than my last several regular sized bottles! Exotic and extroverted bouquet, offering up scents of ripe dark fruits, truffle, tapenade, and roasted herbs. Medium-bodied, incredibly velvety, great length and depth, with great focus and grip on the long finish.

Bought as future and I have one more bottle. Had at 1990's tasting as the fourth wine. Again very dark. Did not get as big as nose as with other wines. Wine was very full bodied and coated glass and had beautitul legs. Again some coffee and fennel taste. But that might be with the roasted fennel in the roasted vegetables I served with the steak and lamb. Lovely. It was not as highly regarded by everyone.

This is incredible and belongs to the best wines I ever tasted. In the bouquet a lot of complexity with cedar, tobacco, chocolate, mushrooms, a pleasant touch of barnyard and earth in combination with dark as well as some red fruits. Everything comes back in the taste in a beautiful way. Soft and fully integrated tannin and a touch of beautiful sweetness beside the acidity. A great wine. Drink it now to have the maximum pleasure!

The fill was into the neck and the cork was pristine; popped, poured and consumed over the course of 3 hours. An exotic and extroverted bouquet, offering up notes of cedary black fruits, white truffle, barnyard, fennel, and roasted herbs. On the palate, this was a bit more angular than previous bottles (last tasted 3+ years ago) with the acids much more prominent than I remember. I'll drink my remaining bottles in the short term, as the '90 L'Evangile seems to be in decline from the rather monumental heights it held only a few short years ago.

I have had it on three separate occasions over the last year and it delivers every time. I find it quite surreal that this wine is 30% cheaper than 2010 which won't be drinkable for another 10+ years. Nice mature garnet/ruby colour. Nose is immediately accessable, intially rasberry, blackberries, even a hint of wild stawberry but then chocolate, leather, spice and prunes. Essence of Pomerol pleasure! It is such a good drink- coats the mouth and is beautifully balanced. Tastes as good as it smells! Close to its best now but I still feel it has plenty of life in it and I am always on the look out for more of this. Thanks to JK for sending me home with a bottle when he was last in HK- his generosity is legendary.

No detailed notes. Great nose.....really mesmerising. Palate was tens of variations on a "velvet" theme.....gorgeous. Unfortunately the bottle was served much too warm on a very hot night. Drank alongside a 1990 Ch. Clinet, which suffered more from the temperature.

Winter's Weakening Death Grip: The nose is most impressive with dark fruit, dried herbs and espresso. A big step up in the mouth with complex flavors, great weight, fine grain/elegant tannins, and an satisfying finish. Maybe not up to my lofty expectations, but a thrilling bottle of wine.

Mid garnet with noticably tawny rim. The nose quite muted generally but florat notes dominated together with damson and plum. On the palate the wine was also quite muted. Good acidity and freshness, moderate and well integrated tannins. Gentle black fruits and some woodsmoke but actually surprisingly uneveloved given the colour. This was a big dissappointment - a real lack of aroma or flavour in any depth. I suspect it could have been my error in not giving this wine anything like enough time in decanter to open but on seeing the evolved colur I was rather reeluctant to do this at outset. I have five more bottles over different (newer) vintages so I will see how they perform...

Alcohol :: 13% Opened for 2days. Deep garnet core with slight brownish hue and surprisingly the wine hold itself very well! First pouring, the nose is expressive and lots of substance to it. Floral, some over-ripe cherry fruits, plum intermixed with soil and earthy, leathery notes. Intense mid palate, soft texture, elegance with roasted herbs, cooked meat as well as lush plum fruits. However the finishing is loosen out and fall short. With some aeration, strong core of soy sauce, stew, cook cherry fruits and currant surface with caramel note underneath that masked the fresh floral aromatic. While the palate is still fresh with good ripe acidity to it, it does has a light trace of alcohol heat and cooked meat underneath that resulted in fresh, but also spicy finishing. (I believe after 2days, the oxidation also contribute to the slight alcohol heat when the fruits started to fade) This is very drinkable but sadly to say, a cook bottle. Good experience though. Flaw

Tasted blind, mixed in with a blind 2000 Bordeaux tasting. This wine was not showing well at all. Thin, ruby-brick in color, notes of cedar, red currants, and a hint of green (stemminess) on the nose. The wine was showing tart, and light-medium in body. Once revealed, this was a shocker. Bad bottle, I don't know, but not up to what our friends at WS have noted.

Afraid RMP was right about this wine. Im guessing itll get back to its old state at some point, when it was seductive and delicious, but now its just brutally unbalanced and unenjoylble And bc of this, the horsiness shows up too prominently in the nose and onthe palate. Wait a year or two before opening and hope its just a transitional stage.

Grand vin. 93-94 pts

Impression from the day after: Opened not decanted 90 minutes before. It had a deep burnt violet hue. Nicely evolved and elegant nose with a right bank earthiness and flower bouquet top notes. The palate was very well integrated mix of fruit and richness that only improved with lamb roast it was served with. Long finish. OUTSTANDING: 93+

The initially closed nose opened after much coaxing to notes of herbs, cherries, strawberries and hints of black fruits. On the palate the wine is pleasant, but it lacks the richness and excitement from previous bottles. I am not clear this bottle was correct. I'm going to open one of mine to compare in the near future as this bottle seemed to have matured far too rapidly.

Pratt's Bordeaux table and then some: I consider myself very lucky to have had this gem of a wine twice in the last couple of months. This is simply stunning stuff. There’s a perfectly integrated WIP (Weapon of Intense Pleasure) explosion out of the glass and in the mouth that’s full of rich ‘n sweet black fruit, cocoa, earth and herb. Multi-layered, dense and perfectly balanced, if young. You’ll want to wring every last drop out of the bottle. A+/A.

We had this at our 10-year anniversary dinner (part 2) at Picholine. The fill was into the neck; the sommelier opened it for us about an hour before we had our first glass. A lovely ruby-red color, with no amber at the edge. A heavenly boquet -- it was filling the corner of the restaurant as the wine was poured -- with incredible notes of black fruits, white truffle, star anise, and leather. Medium-bodied, with a lush texture, fine concentration, and a long, complex finish. Doesn't get much better than this!

Some brown on the colour; the nose is rich and spicy, with plums, fruitcake and a hint of coffee; the palate is intense, with a slight dryness and very long. This is still vigorous, but is starting to show its age a bit. One of the best right bank clarets I've drunk recently.

Paired with grilled dinner of balsamic marinated steak, cubed potatoes and veggies. The entire cork is wine stained and showing just a bit of seapage. A beatiful claret color with no browning at the edges. A pure clean nose of dried red fruits and a hint of cedar. It looks like I caught this one just in time. No suggestion that this was cooked either. Still fairly primary or maybe just typical of merlot from 1990. Gorgeous mouthfeel with medium weight and a real delicacy for a 1990. This is not overwrought, roasted or ponderous by any means. Pure flavors of sweet red cherries and a bit of tobacco but not hugely complex. Nice balance with a long finish that was able to stand up reasonably well to the marinade. This has just arrived at it maturity plateau where it should hold for several more years as long as the cork holds out. Very nice. Unfortunately, my last bottle.

Right about in the middle of a terrific lineup of Pomerols at Palme d'Or, and a big hit with the group. I could see why they liked it so much but for me the iron backbone made the structure a little too much for the very fine dark fruit. With another five years, though, this might approch the height of the magnificent '82 L'Evangile.

Much Maligned Merlot: Somewhat translucent red with a marked bricked edge. Aroma: secondary flavors present, big smell of mushrooms, very earthy, with some herbal notes and Indian spices. Taste: liquorish, a bit of olives, little fruit (rhubarb). It does not disappoint. Like chewing on rusted iron. Medium body, very well balanced, very well integrated tannins. Extremely layered. This wine takes more effort to get to know.

Mmm, this is sex in a bottle. From the moment I popped the bottle this was screaming of cocoa and gunflint with a hint of leather and soy. Lush and silky on the palate without the least heaviness, this is quintessential Pomerol. A hint of salinity on the finish, mmm. Really lovely bottle.

Wine Society Pomerol Tasting with Christian Moueix (Merchant Taylors' Hall, London EC2): Slightly darker core than the previous wine but with a wider mahogany rim. Lovely sweet, evolved, but restrained nose, develped but still with a lovely core of sweet, pure strawberry fruit. Hints of brown sugar and caramel and a lovely floral top note. Simply gorgeous on the palate too, with lovely sneaky intensity, latent but integrated supporting tannins and attractive fresh acidity on the long finish. Outstanding, and drinking really well now. 93-96.

Mmm, lush, chocolately, and smooth. This is incredibly sexy and well resolved already, and was one of the rare red wines that my wife enjoyed. No tannin to speak of at this point, just lots of sexy Merlot. Nice mineral interplays with dark chocolate, sage and a hint of mint. The best part here is the utterly silky texture.

Dinner at Lola, April 2007. This is clearly a momumental wine, and (probably) the finest Pomerol I have ever tasted or smelled. Still dark ruby in color, with an absolutely intoxicating boquet of ripe dark fruits (cherry), truffles, and chocolate candy -- impressive beyond description. Luscious in the mouth, with a velvety feel (but not heavy) and a finish that last well over a minute. This wine will last for at least another 15 years, but how could anyone resist at present?

Sweet 16 Party for our Bordeaux (Triomphe): A stunningly beautiful, elegant wine. Effusive and powerful, yet supple and smooth, this is what Pomeral is about. The nose is intense and fascinating with black fruit, chocolate and leather. Round and silky with sweet dark fruit and spices. It finishes beautifully with the fruit dancing on your tongue with an acidity that, until then, you didn't notice was there. A spectacular wine that will drink well for years.

Deep lapis to the rim. Great nose of plump dark fruit (boisenberry?). The attack is equally impressive with mostly soft primary fruit. Medium bodied with integrated tannins. A little disappointing on the finish with slightly fading fruit but no tart acidity. This is all beautiful upfront Pomerol merlot but no real complexity and length. Enjoyable nonetheless although not living up to its reputation for this vaunted vintage.

More Bordeaux with Leve at Providence (Los Angeles, CA): Some mushroom on the nose opens up to reveal iron, blood, rust and eventually some barnyard. Wow what a treat! New Year's dinner with friends. Color is medium garnet with a hint of bricking at the rim. Nose is exotic with floral elements, cherry, spice, and leather. On the palate, this is a perfectly balanced, smooth as silk wine. Cherry, spice, leather, and tobacco all seem to effortlessly intermingle in this medium-bodied gem. Tannins are well-integrated and acids are unobtrusive. The wine improved significantly over 2 hours, but it drank well straight away. An absolute stunner, and by far the best Merlot based wine of my life. Thanks to Matt for bringing this treasure.

This is the best wine that I have ever tasted. The only reason I didn't give it 100 points is that I have never had the pleasure of tasting Petrus and must, therefore, defer to the experts by leaving room to account for my inexperience. It had a nose of flowers and the scent of lead pencil, tasted like a bowl of grapes and left behind the sweetest, silkiest tannins I have ever experienced in a wine only 15 yrs old.

Tasted at Mas retaurant in NYC, not decanted. Nose was heavy and perfumed with bright, sweet fruit and mellow spice. Right out of the bottle, the wine was smooth and delicately balanced with depth of flavor moving from the initial fruitiness to a more floral and somewhat mineral finish. The wine has mellowed and become more integrated since last tasting about a year ago. I have encountered a lot of bottle variation, but this one was mature and powerful, but oh so feminine.

Red fruit, blue fruit, pencil, tobacco, cedar. Love the Merlot influence in these right bank Pomerols. Last bottle and will have to find more of these. Just wow.

Lovely old Bordeaux.

Tasting note
Not overly expressive, quite restrained fruit, but if you look long enough you‘ll find fresh red raspberry and a bit of strawberry in the mix. Unexciting palate with slightly coarse tannin and acidity that didn't fit well with a lack of texture. At its current stage, the weakest showing of an Evangile I've had so far.

Finish: Very compeling and delivers a 50+ second finish of cedar, smoke, truffle and black fruit.

Far more nuanced than the rest of the wines in the flight and indicative of a well aged Bordeaux. Some spice, olive and sious bois. Much higher complexity here and a ton of elegance. Drinking really well right now.

BYO dinner with Ray/Shaun/CVA/Fabian - Bordeaux and "ABC" Whites... (The Milling Room - NYC): This was one of my contributions for the evening. Bottle bought at auction several years ago. Decanted for about 45 minutes prior to drinking, consumed over 2 hours.
Deep ruby color, mild seperation. Nose of red fruits, truffle pencil/graphite, underbrush and violets. Palate showing dusted black fruits, plums, pomegranate, floral notes, and baking spice. Velvety texture, classic Right Bank wine. Medium weight, long finish that showed secondary notes of red fruits and spice.
This was an elegant, mature (IMO) Bdx that showed beautifully this night. Pomerol at its best...Tannins still present, suggesting a long arc ahead but drinking very well now. WOTN against some strong competition!

Palate much the same, though slightly better than the first flawed bottle, which isn't saying much.

Opened for 2days. Flaw

Drunk an hour after opening and poured in glass and decanter. Cherry, licorice, cedar nuances. Unexciting and unexceptional. Was expecting a bit more than this.

Initially very closed and ungiving. l After an hour in a decanter, it began to blossom. Got to a very creamy, soft stage later on. Good finish, decent acidity, nicely balanced. But, on balance, I had expected more.

The palate is rich and chocolatey, very lush and ripe. The only knock against this wine is some coarseness to the tannins on the finish. That is picking nits though.
