Left bank bordeaux 2008 and older (BLVD): It was neat to try the 1995, 2000 and 2005 all in one flight. The 1995 was at peak and fully mature, with a complex and tertiary frame. The 2000 was not quite ready yet, still tannic and slightly primary. The 2005 was nowhere near ready, with primary fruit and un-integrated oak.

Have had the 96 Lagrange many times but for some reason never encountered the 95 until today - so curious to try. Great bottle with bottom neck fill and a clean and dry cork with only the very end / tip soaked. Pnp. Transparent garnet with a clear rim, barely any browning. While the cork smelled completely clean, was getting a touch of TCA on the nose out of the glass, especially initially. On the palate this seemed however completely clean. Softens a little with more air but this is a very lean and serious classic Bdx, not much fruit left but still medium tannins. Pleasant but short finish. For me a wine that is already drying out and compared to my last 96 Lagrange (which could be a little tired in the meantime though), clearly a notch or two lower in quality. Unless you like your Bdx all tertiary (in which case you could put this easily aside for another 10 years), I would drink up now.

Talbot, Gruaud & Lagrange (Piccolino Exchange Square): Spikiest of this flight. Someone said "grated chocolate" and i got it. Something not quite resolved about these 95s - almost like 96 in burgundy. This would, of course, be a lovely drink on its own - but in the company it struggled (and notably it was one of only two wines to score zero this dinner).

Talbot / Gruaud Larose / Lagrange Dinner (Piccolino, Exchange Square, London): Showed way better than I expected; the tannins and frame didn't overwhelm but complemented a blue fruited, serious wine. I detected a little grated chocolate on the palate as well as the fruit. With some air both the nose and palate had an agreeable Bakewell almond note. Good stuff.

Definitely at a good point along maturity. On the nose mushroom, earth, cedar, cassis. These aromas smell quite deep, really beautiful. Red fruit, tobacco, mineral, savoury flavors on the palate. A classic Bordeaux profile, lower alcohol (12.5%).
In between a medium and deep garnet. Acidity in check. Medium to full body. Long finish.
Bought this from an auction put on by one of my favorite wine shops with the age.
Think this has a good 5-10 more years at this level, if stored properly.

My fourth vintage of Lagrange: 1995, 2000, 2005 and 2014. Had this together with Troplong Mondot 1995 and Leoville Las Cases 1983, and this, slightly lesser chateau, stood up well against these two giants. Needs a 3-5 hour decant at this stage: A bit closed, and slightly tannic. Perfectly cellared since release. Note: Both the 2000 and the 2005 were actually slightly better than the 95.

My last one and it was fabulous. Old, musty, earthy upon opening. 60 mins later and it awoke with some lovely fruit and plum notes. 2 hours later and it was about as good as it gets I think. Well worth the QPR and well worth the experience of drinking a 26 year old bottle.

A evening of 20+ year old Bordeaux (Wilmette Harbor Club, Wilmette IL): This is wide open and giving with polished tones of red cherries, raspberries, sour red fruits, red currants, tobacco notes, spice box, some pepper, leather, cedar notes, and roses. There is excellent depth and poise to the nose that its just a lot of fun to smell. The Medium/full bodied feel is silky and balanced with medium acidity and fine-grained, medium+ tannins. This is lovely and showing a lot of refinement and maturity. This has a great red-fruit forward take with excellent balance and depth across the nose and palate.

Beautiful wine. Medium bodied, Red and lighter noted dark fruit, cedar, smoke, layers of secondary and tertiary notes, sweet tannins resolved, balanced, sophisticated, elegant, smooth mouthfeel. At its peak or slightly beyond. Very pleasing wine.

Attractive nose with cedar scents, the palate is rich and nicely complex with dark cassis, St Julien type strong cedar flauvors with black olives lurking at the back, minerality, simultaneously sweet and sauvory characteristics, medium minus acidity but fresh, tannins are fully resolved and in the right place, very enjoyable now, could be at the peak of its powers. Definitely not a difficult 1995.

Stunning. Very smooth. Some red berry fruit, but the "pine"? scent dominates. There are also some tobacco and gravelly mineral flavors. Opened 2 hours before dinner. Did not decant but there was a fair bit of sediment making me wish I had. Long finish.

Youthful still, just slight bricking. Nose is still a bit broody, dark cherry and olives, tannins are forthright. Smoky and savoury but with a lushness of the vintage. Probably needs longer.

Lots of funk on the nose and tartness on the palate when first opened, enough to where I thought I might need to open a different bottle. Poured into a decanter, hoping for the best before returning with my rack of lamb taken out from a French restaurant. It was better then, but still not in a great place, but steadily improved over time, ultimately needing over an hour to become quite nice in the old school style. That is characterized by its low alcohol (12.5%), Old World funk (less on palate than the nose), higher acidity level, and reserved fruit. This matched well with the lamb and even my 24 year old wine novice son liked it quite a bit, so that should dispel the notion that it will appeal only to those who appreciate that style. In the end, a wine that grew on me as it opened up, and certainly in a different style than most Bordeaux in more recent vintages. I would not sit on these much longer, but be prepared to aerate longer than usual for a wine of this age.

This one grew on me. And it’s a great value for a 95. Threw it into the decanter for a couple hours - which was necessary. Evolved a great deal with air and time. Ultimately the nose evolved from metallic, dark berry, and mossy to a caramel currant type of feel - great transition. The tannins became more rounded with time and it had a decent finish - not long at first but lingered in a sneaky way in the back of my mouth and throat. Started looking for more bottles while drinking! Good stuff.

Crimson in color with some bricking at the edge of the glass but mostly darker than I would have expected. 12.5% ABV. Fantastic nose of red fruits, leather, cigar box and graphite. Medium body with just enough fruits and hearty tannins. Dried cherries, currants and plums on the palate. Medium length on a mouth drying finish. Slightly past it's prime but good enough paired with some red meat Drink over the next year or so.

1995 Bordeaux Tasting at Winetasters of Toronto Club (North York Memorial Hall): 1995 Château Lagrange was a lackluster wine. It was probably a bad bottle. The colour was clear medium garnet. The nose was quite muted at first, and some brettanomyces signatures of sweat and dustiness emerged with some time in air. It was medium-light bodied, with unbalancing medium-high acidity. The medium level of tannin was austere and unripe, and had punished the palate for some time in the finish. The blend composed of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot and 6% Petit Verdot. It was rated the least favourite among the eight wines tasted, in my own tasting note as well as the group aggregate.

Popped and poured. Still quite fruity with black cherry and blackcurrant but with cedar and leather and a little caramel. the palate is a reflection of the nose but with with a touch of sous bois. The tannins are chamois soft (surprisingly enough for a 95) and fan out on the palate in a very enticing peacocks tail kind of way. Lovely.

Annual Coravin blitz - day three (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. Slightly oxidised, leather, farmyard, cold, wet stone, cedar, cigar box, red currant, bit funky with sweet spice. In the mouth it's juicy, savoury, more red currant, leathery tannins that proves quite tight. Medium plus length. Hmm.

Fragrant and elegant bouquet of ripe blackcurrant, leather, dark chocolate and toasty oak. Palate is smooth and complex, reflecting the nose. The more you chew on it, the deeper the flavours in the mid-palate. 24 years of age has rounded the structure making it very easy to drink. Transitions from entry to finish is seamless. Finish is elegant but simple. Ready to drink now and will continue to drink well for another 3-5 years.

88 pts

This is still a few years from maturity, but with 3 hours of air it’s already showing a lovely, sense cassis and mineral nose with touches of lavender and cedar. Check in again in another 5ish years.

As this approaches its 25th birthday, while not exactly rounded out, the wine has softened. The nose has an herbal leaning, with cedar and tobacco leaf accents to the bright red fruits, while the palate is a nice juicy bite of sweet and tart red fruits.

Decanted 1 hour. Still quite youthful colour. Masculine, savoury nose: more depth of stewed red fruit and meaty graphite flavours than the 2001 Pontet Canet which preceded it. Medium-bodied and supple on the palate - tannins well resolved at this stage but the wine still has good vigour. Lovely.

Second Sunday Group: 2009 Châteauneuf-du-Pape (R&D's): Currant, pencil and plum notes. Medium tannin with mixed red and dark fruit on the palate. Rustic. I'd say this needs more time, but I do not believe that to be the case. I think this is just okay and likely won't improve.

Celebration time after best result in stair challenge and retention of the Maillot Jaune caused the pulling out of a bottle of mature Bordeaux to enjoy with a rack of Cowra lamb. Double decanted. Aromas of red and blackberry, biscuit, slightly volatile but also quite rich, spiced as well as a touch of aniseed. Also the usual stuff...leather, slight sous bois, mushrooms, autumn leaves...In the mouth it is juicy, fleshy, again a little volatility is married to the more red hued fruit. A bit of tannic grip on the front of mouth as well.

Very good, just short of excellent. A bit foursquare with a herbal nose of rosemary and pepper. Medium body, bright acids, good depth. No wow factor, just solid, weekday claret that is mature but not fading.

sweet cherry over slight raspberry with sweet spice, star anise pushing into an almost menthol/mint note and, perhaps, a little rhubarb. not what i was expecting on the nose. in the mouth there is more of the same but it's tending more savoury and leathery with fine, silky tannins and a little astringency on the finish. Fresh though and pleasingly juicy. I kind of like it.

A wise man once said, there is no such thing as "good old wine" , just "good bottles". This advice has proven itself so true and definitely came to mind last night as I was drinking this good bottle with a good friend.
Bordeaux from the cork pop to the last drop, this wine showed cedar, plums, and that touch of barnyard that I love, look for, and pay extra money for. The wine came out of the bottle great, went slightly flat, and then gained double the power from the halfway mark, all the way to the last drop! WOW another surprise bottle! I had the great 1990 about 2 weeks ago, and I gotta say, this bottle outclassed it. Not because 95 wines from Lagrange are better than the stellar 1990 vintage. But just because there is no such thing as good old wine, just good bottles! DRINK!

Crimson in color. 12.5% ABV. Sensational nose of red fruits, cigar box and graphite. Medium body with medium acidity. Big, structured and sweet with still substantial tannins. Cherries, cassis, currants and roasted herbs on the palate. The finish is exceptionally long with chewy tannins. Well stored bottles will drink well for the next 3-5 years.

Very dense deep plum colour, with just a tinge of browning; cigar box and berry fruit on a dense nose, with a hint of farmyard and possibly oxidisation, but not unacceptable; good depth of flavour velvety texture and excellent integration of components, totally knit to the point of being seamless. There is perhaps a little flattening out of taste towards the back palate. This is a very mature wine. Drink up.

Apparently, Cabernet Sauvignon 57% and Merlot 43% (an unusually high percentage for this house) and 50% new oak (unusually low). Colour showing some evolution. Slightly browning at the rim. An earthy, peppery nose, showing the Merlot. There are also nuances of tobacco leaf, preserved plums and other red fruit. Relatively lean on palate, not, at this stage of its evolution, at all fruit driven. The flavours are red fruited, earthy, tobacco and underbrush. The tannins are fully resolved. The Australian Cabernet drinkers in our group did not like the wine and you could criticise it for the lack of concentration and fruit weight. I liked it, in that lean style but, at 20 years of age, the fruit is beginning to slip and the acids become more prominent. Drink soon.

The nose had sous bois, soil, cinnamon, tobacco and cigar box. On the palate, the fruit was still present but showing signs of fading away. The mid palate was a bit short. In sum, its a ready to drink mature classic bordeaux that should be consumed now and the next two years. Lagrange 96 which I consumed few weeks ago was a better wine.

Double decanting for an hour prior to tasting; however, the palate was still rather tannic and tight with mostly dark berries and licorice; nevertheless, the nose was very complex and perfumed, with lots of apples, berries, cherries, caramel, graphite, mints, pencil shavings, and black truffles; just the way a well made Grand Cru Classe Bordeaux wine at this age should be; the finish, pretty much mirroring the palate but showing more spices and some damp wood; overall, 90-91 points for now; the nose was wonderful but the palate and the finish still needed years to evolve; not quite sure about their potential though.

This was decanted. The cork was fragile. the color was very good. and the nose and taste were initially tight. But, the wine was in good shape wiith a mix of mature fruit, resolved tannins and earthiness. It continued to improve over the course of the meal. All n all, I was very pleased with this mature Bordeaux. I will drink my other bottles soon as I do not expect it to improve with additional age.

La Commanderie de Bordeaux: Chateau Lagrange Vertical (Bishop's - Vancouver, BC): Tons of graphite and cedar on the nose, along with aromas of rich red cherry and black currants. There's some cassis sweetness on the palate, along with more graphite, black cherry, cigar leaf, earth, and slate. The tannins are still quite hard, with firm acidity. A long length finish ending on notes of black cherry and graphite. This is a powerful wine, showing big brooding fruits although still a bit austere. This could still use a few more years, but will be worth the wait. Very good+

Very fresh and fruity. Still very much primary fruit dominant. Little oak influence, fermented in steel tank. Opens up fast. Youthful dark red garnet color with really no signs of aging. Shy and closed on the nose when initially opened, this wine expands its aromatics by the minute, being fully opened after 1-2 hours. Well developed and maturing nose, intense, with generous aromas of smoke, dried red paprika, coffee bean, cedar, gamey undertones and still plenty of cranberries and black currant fruit. It successfully preserves a sweet and spicy nose. Full bodied and supple on the palate, this is classic aged St-Julien. Well structured and balanced, with smooth and ripe tannins, the wine shows red fruit mixed with coffee and pencil shavings on the palate. After 2 hours, the Cabernet Sauvignon typical aromas of black currant and green bell pepper dominate the stage. Medium plus finish with good freshness and an espresso like flavor. 12.5% alc (90-91/100)

Classic bordeaux, earthiness on initial nose. Opens up with restrained fruit after sitting open for 45 minutes. Then it really shows its depth...soft black fruit with some leather and tobacco, great balance and long finish. Well worth the wait with enough structure for several more years.

Opened by Aphilla. The cepage is 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot. Not sure of decanting. Firm acidity. Moderate fruit notes with cedar, licorice and plum. Some grip on the finish. Opened alongside the 1995 Lynch which I liked slightly better. I liked this better than the 2001 Lagrange but not as much as the 2003, 2005 or 2009's that I've had in the past. 90-92 points

1995 Bordeaux Retrospect: Alcohol :: 12.5% Welcoming on the nose with its sweet core and fresh mineral aromas. So charming and seductive on the palate, especially with the inner perfume of the sweet dark fruits as well as hint of floral, very intense, good grip. This is in a great place and paired well with thick bone in ribs. 30 minute splash decant. Lots of life ahead with dark fruit, pencil shavings, a slight cedar like sweetness and good mouthfeel and length. I felt I opened an 89' a year or two too late a couple of years back and so may have had lower expectations for this - it was good though. Drink now - 5 years.

Knew the second I opened this that I was killing a baby. Tannins were very upfront, nose was classic Bordeaux. Didn't get any of the Licorice I have come to love from Lagrange. For a 15 year old bottle, this was all tannin. Spent a few hours in the decanter and by the end of the night it was fairly fruit driven, but still holding back the complex notes I expected. Good foil for the 1980 Mondavi Reserve, but just didn't live up to my expectations.

Not decanted. Good colour, showing some development but not really betraying its 15-year age. Lovely St Julien nose of cassis and blackberry and pencil shavings. Later some slight secondary notes (tobacco tones), but still quite a primary nose really (possibly decanting would have affected this). Classic Cabernet flavours on the palate. Beautiful balance on the palate, concentrated yet elegant, velvety texture, well-judged. Impressive. Long and "more-ish". Very good plus.

gee whiz! We are really enjoying this wine. It has flavors of tea and oranges, not always my favorite, but so smooth and elegant. This is a sipping wine, not gulping, so you enjoy it twice as long. My wife said it was "yummy", which is a definite compliment from her, so I pass that along. I have been drinking much cheaper and very enjoyable wines, like 2005 Potensac, but this is a special treat for its intensity, elegance, and interest. At a little over $100, I thought I was splurging, but now I am asking if there is more at the store. We started drinking it as soon as opened, over an hour ago, and are still at it. It keeps getting better. This is so good I have neglected to watch the steaks, and had to start the fire over again after the coals all burned off. recommended.

When this bottle was initially opened, the very first pours had a distinct aroma of Coppertan Sun Tan Oil. It was front and center for a couple of minutes. No missing it. It was there just long enough for us to pick out what it was, and then it started to fade. It was weird when it was there, but we missed it when it wasn't - just because it had been fun and made us all laugh. That set the tone for this fun tasting. As the wine opened up, the nose took on a very spicy note that was almost like a habanero pepper. There were also aromas of dark fruits, brett and earth under the spice. The palate had smoky dark berry flavors with cedar, earth and leather notes. This wine had very nice balance and a long finish. I enjoyed this a lot.

Second bottle from this case. Not decanted, but opens up quite quickly. Lovely deep ruby colour: still quite dark, not showing much maturity. Good nose of black fruit and cedar, some smoky notes. Surprisingly forward and intense on the nose. The same cassis and black fruit flavours follow on the palate, which is has by now integrated the oak notes. A good combination of elegance and intensity on the palate - not a blockbuster but certainly doesn't lack stuffing. Well judged. Good finish and length. Very "more-ish". Delicious. (All this was re-confirmed on a re-taste 2 days later, when it definitely outperformed the 2001 Langoa Barton tasted alongside.)

This wine shows nothing of the 12 years that have gone by. It might as well be a 2006. There is some iron and blood mineral underneath the fruit, which is nice, and the finish shows a bit of complexity. Perfectly pleasant wine, but not inspiring at all to me.

A two-faced wine. At first was very closed both on the nose & in the glass and couldn't find much more than a bit of body & some tannins. At thatdidn't stand up well against the 95 Canon de Brem that we also had. But latterly - about an hour in, opened up and the fruit exposed itself. Nicely weighted, fresh with cherry/blackcurant and some earthy notes. Wooding not hugely noticeable but there was a decent bit of body there. Mostly integrated on the finish, warmed up to be a pretty nice glass.

(Tasting note not contemporaneous). The first bottle from a case picked up at auction in December 2008. No written note taken at the time, and as it is now some months later I am struggling to recall my impressions in detail. Having said that, I do remember that the wine looked surprisingly youthful (with a deep, almost indigo, colour); had a very pleasant nose of classic Claret aromas even if it did not demonstrate any one particularly memorable feature; and displayed a palate which was fruity but medium-bodied and well-balanced (not the "burly" beast I have sometimes seen this wine described as). So no very detailed remarks, but overall this was a good example of classic St Julien claret, although perhaps lacking the intensity or panache of, say, one of the three Leovilles. Looking forward to the 11 remaining bottles.

The second 95 of the night and this one carried a fine sense of freshness along with beautiful aged cassis and forest floor notes. It was bright and expansive all the way across the palate with delicious Cabernet notes of tobacco and even some green vegetables (how can this be so attractive in old world wines and such a flaw in the new world). There were distinct mineral elements in this wine that were more gravel than pencil lead. All in all it was bright, balanced and just lovely on the table.

Decanted and consumed at a boisterous dinner party, so no notes taken. Compared four Bordeaux or Bordeaux-style wines: '99 Lynch-Bages, '95 Lagrange, '97 Clos du Bois Marlstone and '99 Andrew Will Sorella. All were terrific.

Open and let stand 2 hours before drinking. Dark purple/burgundy color with delicious nose. Really fine bordeaux, although a bit austere. Lead pencil, berry and currant flavors. This wine was drinking well but appears to have many years left. Smooth and flavorful. Really went very well with steaks on the grill.

Drinking beautifully right now. Nose is very fresh and complex at the same time. Mix of red and dark fruits (raspberry and blackberry, cassis) with some minerality (it was like gravels dipped into fruits !!). Same thing on the palate: silky, mineral with pepper, red and dark fruits. Med acidity, smooth tannins with a lingering finish. Great stuff.

We gave this a good two hours in the decanter and it was still just starting to reveal itself by the time we started drinking it. This is a solid wine but I would give it a few more years to shed some of the tannins.

Dark ruby. Barnyard, chocolate. Good black fruits like cassis. After the first fruitiness the acidity and paprika appear. It seams to me that the cabernet was not completely ripe. On the other hand, with the tannin as it has, this wine can improve the next 4-5 years

Half bottle (.375) format... Classic maturing Bordeaux--great fruit, "developing" aromatics that are not stinky or funky. As it evolved in the glass Indian spices emerged--clove, cardamom, etc... gorgeous!

Did not decant this bottle. It has a nice nose of mint and berry. Flavors of blackberry and some floral with perhaps some chocolate. The finish was velvety smooth. This wine could age further, but is a delight to drink now. Classic Lagrange terroir!

Decanted for an hour. Colour showing almost no age. Pencil shavings and some earth on the nose. Fine tannins and alcohol still hiding fruit although well balanced and long fine tannic finish. Wish I'd left for another 5 years!

This was very tight when it was opened; we did not decant it. It opened up relatively soon and began to develop a nice taste. I don't recall the nose being anything special. Ultimately it proved very nice with food exhibiting an intense current and dried plum flavor and relatively well balanced.

The 2000 was not quite ready yet, still tannic and slightly primary. The 2005 was nowhere near ready, with primary fruit and un-integrated oak.

Clear, medium ruby fading to a clear rim.
Nose is woody, youthful and rough. Chocolate, meat and garrigue.
Palate is rich, plush, textural and structured. Lovely, long tannin. Balanced.
Flavours of violet, black fruit, chocolate and pepper. Very long finish.
Beautiful full wine in a good spot but better in another 5-10 years.

Good stuff.

DRINK!

Drink soon.

Ripe tannins, smooth texture, rather easy to drink, fruity and generous, showing some earthiness and pencil shavings.
The finish is rather medium-.
Definitely a pleasent experience.
Has still much aging potential.

Welcoming on the nose with its sweet core and fresh mineral aromas. So charming and seductive on the palate, especially with the inner perfume of the sweet dark fruits as well as hint of floral, very intense, good grip. This delicious juice offer medium level of complexity and depth, with good sense of harmonious. Coffee and spice notes evolved in the glass with long finish. A really well made Lagrange (we thought this was the Poyferre!). A surprised!
