Bottle 2235/16200. Served in blind and I thought its a 99 or 02 Prieure Roche Beze. Sexy aromatics of stems, sweet red currants, perfume and strawberries. It had none of the 04 greenness. The palate was sweet and penetrating with good length. 92-93

04820/16200, needs air as with the rest of the vintage but what a star. Soaring red fruit perfume, lychee, hawthorn, light oak, earthy, stony, robust, meaty. Superbly detailed and complex as it folds onto itself. If I were to blind this would be a Clos Vougeot here. 94-95

As close to perfection as a wine can be. Had 3 bottles with 14 friends/family for my 70th bday. A deep rich burgundy with a beautiful finish. It paired perfectly at the 4 seasons restaurant with choices of rabbit, steak and mushroom risotto. Outclassed the 1970 Latour which we also had in the evening.

Opened on Christmas day at Otto e Mezzo in Hong Kong. Slow-Oxed for 2 hours before enjoying in the glass.
Incredible expression on the nose of lychee, blueberry jam and tea leaves. At the start, the palate wasn't quite matching up to the aromatics. However, with a bit more air and breathing in the glass, it started to catch up and there was more weight and structure coming through, which balanced beautifully with the acidity which was always present.
This was declassified heaven, and given there is some juice here from Clos de la Roche, Clos de Vougeot and Corton Renardes amongst other vineyards, this was an incredibly memorable experience to savour. The only sad part concerns the circumstances of why this wine was made, which was the passing of Marcel Bize.
Certainly the most enjoyable wine of my line-up with the Thirsty Arab, and one to remember for a long time.

Popped & poured, this was somewhat cloudy in appearance, with some bricking around the rims... "Crazy" wild nose - a potpourri of (damp) earth, herbs, orange-peel, smoke/cedar, roses. The limited '04 Leroys I've had the opportunity to have all seemed to have this wild but very alluring nose... That said, the palate for this Bourgogne didn't seem to match up with its bouquet - yes, it was equally "flavourful" with sour-cherries, earth/leather/mushrooms but I found it somewhat weak in the overall sense, with the fruit dropping off and the acidity poking out somewhat... Qualitatively, I thought the '09 Duroche Charmes was the better wine although the beautiful bouquet of the Leroy definitely ran circles around it...

Opened with a group of us that drank a lot of Leroy '04's in the years after release. Each of us have gone through cases, and this was my last bottle of the Bourgogne. With some air it was singing, and as always surprised on the upside. Great memories of fun times.

Heidi's Gang: Back in Saddle Again (The Kenwood, Mpls, MN): Medium murky red color with a clear 3mm margin. PNP, drank a glass plus over 2.5 hours. Wow, this is just an unreal bottle. It seems like there are so few chances for something like this even happening. But these Leroy's have that potential to so shine above their pay grade. The '04's have simply been glorious. This was a head turning, stunningly good bottle that was only matched tonight by an equally impressive '08 Bouchard Chambertin-Clos De Beze among a trio of Grand Cru's. What a perfume; swampy, damp and earthy, filled with truffles and moss, leather, cherry, blood orange, and high toned dried roses. I wrote, unf$%^g real. The palate is an amazing array of cherry, leather, sour cherry, deeply earthy with floral tones all around, so bright, so lively, sublime. Holy S$%t. I loved this. 94+ to 95pts.

Brad E's btl Everyone at the table loved this, except me. Oh well :). Reminds me of drinking recently sourced Barolos from 60s & 70s. Appreciate Brad sharing & fun to try again for old times sake. Drinking very much as I remember previous btls.

Bize-Leroy declassified her wines in 2004. This wine comes from Clos de la Roche, Clos Vougeots, Corton Renardes, Savigny les Beaunes les Narbantons, Volnay Santenots and Pommard les Vignots. It's a testament to this house's wine making skills. My last bottle. Lovely!

My wife had one word for this - Nectar This is only a village wine - Nearly 20 years later this just knocks so many 1er cru and grand cru out of the park. Completely and utterly memorable Wonderful colour not too ruby, farm yard smells then on the palate so rounded, complex - perfect from the first touch on the tongue until it slips down the throat- retains its full taste and never breaks into layers - Just retains its rounded complexity throughout

Just so intense the nose of sous bois, red fruit. Could taste the CDLR, but comes across as a little disjointed. Just not as expressive as the VR I drank a few months ago. Still a amazing experience and next up is the Gevrey Chambertin

Wow. The last bottle of this I drank was cloudy; this one is perfectly clear. Medium red, just turning amber at the edges. Intense and rich at only 12.5% alcohol. Lingering. Barnyard pinot noir funk meets secondary tones of leather and dark fruit. Probably at it's peak but, depending on the bottle, maybe drinking well for a few more years. I don't think there's anything to be gained by waiting.

Ah, the Leroy nose, the Leroy seduction. Like a spice garden with a melange of fruits and a bit of game, mindblowing nose. Unctuous palate, the Leroy viscosity and sweetness. At least a 1er cru density, yet still remains weightless. Would've guessed a vosne due to its spiced palate if blinded. Drinking so well right now! Crap, gotta get more bottles of this.

I have been lucky enough to taste this wine numerous times. Tonight’s bottle is one of the best yet. The color continues to lighten with an ocher tint. The nose shows abundant sweet red fruits with surprisingly little herbaceousness. Still has that wonderful, savory nature. The palate follows the nose and seems perfectly mature. With the prices her wines fetch today, this is a wonderful and affordable introduction to the nectar that is Leroy. Very similar to the last bottles tasted. In the zone. (94)

A remarkable wine in many ways. The colour is odd - cloudy, quite pale and very bricky/orangey, looks 30 years old not 14. The weight is on the light side (12.5%) and of course the content is unique - Pommard villages, Savigny1e, Clos Vgt, Clos de la Roche all mixed in one. But the nose is pure floral perfume, some torrefaction, the palate ripe, sour creamy and extremely elegant. it is quite delicious and beautifully Burgundian and gives more mortals at least a glimpse of what Mme Bize-Leroy's saintly grand crus can do in the worst vintage of the century so far. There are no green meanies here, no pyrazines, no ladybird taint, just pure, elegant pinot fruit and supreme balance. Yes, remarkable on all counts.

This wine continues to impress. Maybe the last affordable way to experience the genius of Leroy. One of the best bottles to date but I do think it is at the peak of maturity - this bottle anyway. Red cherry / orange color. The nose here is more baked fruits and less herbal than many past bottles. Rich palate feel (for Burgundy) and layers upon layers of juicy fruit flavors. A bit of a cacophony of sensations but boy are they good. I will try to drink the remaining bottles over the next few years. Yum. (94)

Pale cherry and slightly cloudy with light rim. Orange peel, oriental salted veg duck stew. Intense but light bodied. Complex and mind stimulating - where is this from? Concentrated with tons of extract but with little weight. Very moreish and umami in a leroy way. The next day, the fruit has receded a little further. The vintage comes across in slightly applecore-like finish. With further age and diminished sweetness this would stick out more. I would drink up.

Very light colour, orange rim. Orange peel, spice, some wet forrest, strawberry fruit packed with high acidity, fresh and uplifting. Long aftertaste with just a hint on green pepper/green taste. Since it is a mix from very different places it is lacking terroir. Reminds most of all of Leroy, but I guess that is not a minus

Very light color - orange / red cherry with a clear rim. Don't let the color fool you - the nose is full, sweet and enveloping. Some spicy notes come through after 30 minutes in the glass. Mesmerizing. Light to medium body but loaded with extract. Sweet / tart personality that makes my mouth water. Green flashes on and off the finish. Changes sip to sip. A lovely wine to drink while watching the snow outside. Tainted a bit more than other recent bottles. (92)

Light ruby color with some bricking; nose has a earthy/rustic component to it, but also at the same time very pure transparent bright red fruit with great ripeness, slight tamarind, great spice, fabulous complexity; palate is light bodied, but has great concentration of red cherry and strawberry fruit, actually very youthful, fresh acidity but certainly not too much, great balance overall, well integrated soft tannin; medium length finish. For a bourgogne, this is stupendous. Although I haven't tried Leroy's Bourgogne before, this is certainly a solid step above the ones I've tried and I believe the hype. If anything, this is still young and may improve over the next decade. 92-93

The wine was cloudy. Nevertheless, it had a great nose of Burgundian barnyard and rich exotic flavors that, while a little muddled, held up during the meal. Will try another bottle soon.

Holiday Dinner at Nathan's (Nathan's House - Chicago, IL): Hadn't had one of these in a while, but it's still exciting to get to try them. Lots of depth and concentration for a Bourgogne (but given the back story, I kind of expected that going in...). Lots of dark fruit, some of that Leroy spiciness on the nose, and a healthy dose of earth throughout. I liked the bottle I tried last year a bit more than this one, but there was a lot to like here, too.

Popped and poured at a large holiday wine dinner. Still cloudy, but wow what a nose -- sour red fruit, spice, just awesome. Equally nice on the palate with a silky texture, perfect weight and expansive fruit flavors. Definitely the best bottle of the 5-6 I've tasted. I'm still worried about longevity, though, and will be drinking my remaining bottles over the next year or two.

Goosefoot (Chicago): I have had this wine a zillion times and tonight it held together exceptionally well. Without question, the best nose of the night. Tremendously bright spice and red fruit. As usual, tart on the palate and a little green. This was shallower than the VR.

Very light ruby color - almost electric pink. Bright, rustic Pinot nose with a touch of grass but not overwhelming. First time I have had this wine in the last year or so and this bottle is hanging in well. Juicy, vibrant and a bit clipped on the finish. Very good - does not appear to be in decline like the past few bottles had. (91)

This wine is a gift to all of us. the eight bottle I have had and better than ever. Spectacular nose leaping out of the glass, from three feet smells like perfume. Nose of Asian spices, dried cherry, and a hint of eucalyptus. On the palate, I am impressed with the balanced acidity, which keeps the wine centered. Flavors of tart red fruits, plum, and dried cherry and spice. incredible viscosity and length. this baby is in its prime. if you have tasted this wine before, and didn't like it, try it again now... it is in its sweet spot. I would but all of this I could get. A true stunner and certainly based on the contents of the bottle, this is no Bourgogne.

Wow. This wine has really improved on Day 2. I am so glad I saved 1/2 of the bottle for the 2nd day.
Color is cloudy and dull cherry with a moderately nice floral nose.
Taste on Day 2: Originally on the first day I was going to give it 90 points but after 24 hours in the refrigerator I have to revise my score to 91. More calm and balanced on the 2nd day. Tastes like a very nice vosne romanee and yes the 2004 vintage character does come through but it is less pronounced after 24 hours open and the acids are more integrated especially on the finish. I am really digging this wine as I rapidly sip on it. Very pretty vosne fruit that is soft but udderly delicious. Not all 2004's are loosers and this is one fine example of why. With good producers even the 04 vintage are enjoyable to drink now. This wine is ready to go and unlikely to improve further. Glad to have a few bottles left but the next one I open I will wait 24 hours prior to drinking. Enjoy if you have some.+++

My last of 3 bottles, and this was by far the best one yet. Gorgeous fruit and spice aromatics (I'm tempted to say Dujac-esque). Plush, velvety, and long in the mouth, with no hint of green-ness. Wowed the table and was drained in no time.

A typical bottle of this wine. It is holding steady but is certainly fragile – herbal red fruit and good intensity are the hallmarks. I can see how people both love and hate it. I like it a good bit, but certainly wish the ’04 character was not as noticeable.. (90)

Burgundy Dinner at John and Jen's (River North - Chicago, IL): I really liked how funky this was. It reminded me a lot actually of pinot noir from the Loire. Any one not sure of what the mean greenies are should taste this wine. It's clear why Madame Leroy declassified her wines in 2004. The green notes were, however, far less evident in the '04 Leroy Vosne Romanee. In this wine they so dominate the flavor profile, that it's difficult to evaluate the positive atributes. Good fruit and acidity. Brick red and somewhat cloudy appearance.

Read the reviews below and it is clear that this wine, like its maker, is controversial. Allen calls it "so-called Bourgogne" and it clearly is far more interesting than any other "Bourgogne" - in fact I found it tasty stuff, ripe, sweet, light but nice intensity in the fruit. (Rouge Tomate)

TTTG Blind (very brief notes): Strawberry and red cherry nose with a bit of a floral note. Very polished and fruit-forward, but with a very off-putting artificial non-descript red fruit sweetness that I associate with cheap generic Cali pinots. At reveal, was surprised both by Leroy (old world?) and 2004 (not green at all). Ready to drink.
On a side note, I am quite amazed by the great variety of tasting notes that seem to describe entirely different wines. I wonder what is the source of such inconsistency in this wine.

A very good showing, the usual cloudy red-orange color. Still amazing nose of rose petals, potpouri, tangerine peel and red tea. Can smell this forever and ever. Green. Only interesting thing was that at room temperature the bitter green pepper flavor was much more hidden than when I drank it more chilled. When cold I literally had to spit the wine out.
I've had three bottles so far, all bad. Unfortunately, I have a few more to go. Thinking of dumping all in the drain, but I may keep them for science's sake.
this is my 2nd bottle the 1st i just couldn't rate it cause i didn't know how i had nothing really to compare it to. This bottle is fabulous! barnyard nose, fully integrated with lovely soft tannin's and just the right acidity great length very complex-so much going on love it

Another Saturday at Knightsbridge - mostly blind (Northbrook, IL): This wine continues to perplex me. Absolutely charming and alluring, but it comes across as an exciting 30 year old Burgundy, not an 8 year old wine. Served alongside the Leroy2004 Vosne-Romanee, I correctly identified these as the two wines in the pairing (I knew Ken was bringing 2 bottles of Leroy 2004), but incorrectly identified which was which. Rich and powerful with dominant baking spice in charge. Very mature red fruit. Drink up...yesterday.

The emporer has no clothes. I've had this wine 3 times, this was the best bottle of the 3, and it sucked. The other 2 just sucked worse. Some of the wines that came to the Seattle market were totally flawed. This bottle from a different source, wasn't cloudy and horrible, it was just horrible. Green Meanies? In spades. But also just bad.

Another Saturday at Knightsbridge - mostly blind (Northbrook, IL): Another unusual showing for this wine, which I haven't tried in a few years. Palate is more advanced and also less interesting. Drink up.

Appearance is cloudy garnet with significant bricking. The nose is elegant and jammy. I had this 4 or 5 years ago and it was herbaceous and not well integrated (several of us thought it tasted like pot). I had it again about 2 years ago and it was starting to come around. The weediness had gone, it had softened a bit and was developing more fullness and balance. Now, it's very smooth and sits on the tongue like raspberry velvet. Hints of Strawberry, maple, and just a touch of tobacco. Plenty of grip and bite on the back side leads me to believe the best is still to come, but this is drinking nicely now.

Medium strawberry red with full transparency. Subtle aromas of cherry, strawberry, licorice, and sandalwood. Palate seems closed down with some herbal elements (green?), black tea, cherry, strawberry, rhubarb, and a hint of allspice that carry into a medium-short finish. Overall, this seems to be whispering, but in an alluring (to me) way. The herbal elements have an astringency to them that gives some pause for concern, but overall a positive experience with over half the bottle saved to see what day two brings. Drink or hold.
P.S. Day two, this is more expressive on the palate, even with the sediment mixed in. Herbal notes remain - almost camphor-like. Altogether pleasant to my palate, but some label bias is certainly present here.

Undrinkably green. Poured down the drain, something I do with perhaps 1 out of 150 bottles. Shocking since I've had this wine before and though I remember a tinge of it, now it's front center and 10 times stronger. There must be a bottle variation to this problem. In any case, no fruit, tired, and bitterly green. I have several more of these and I will try another soon just to see how much is bottle, how much is vintage.
popped and poured. cloudy in color. Green notes on the nose. tastes a bit like spicy V-8 mixed with grapefruit juice. Not totally unpleasant , just 90% unpleasant.

I've had this one probably 20 times and just love it. For the money, there is just no better Leroy out there. A giant sexy nose just jumps from the glass which is followed by powerful red fruit flavors with some iron and tart cherry on the finish. Sure it's cloudy and it's already brownish on the edges but boy does it taste good. No idea how this or the other 2004 Leroys will age but I will keep buying and drinking this one. Best in the 2004 lineup at this point. Note I understand there is considerable bottle variation, but fortunately all of the bottles I have consumed have been consistent.

Leroy 04 horizontal: Drank side by side with the 4 other 04 Leroy and really shows that this wine is starting to decline. Same cloudy red-brown in color, nice floral nose but the palate is lumping together from 3D to 1D, in fact a but thinning and the finish is rather short, with tangerine juice like character. Drink up unless you like to smell rather than to drink.

Typical pale electric cherry color. Noticeably stemy nose give cause for concern. Luckily, the palate still contains some nice fruit. After the seminal bottle in February, the more recent tastings have been noticeably weaker. Though this is a good wine, I urge people to drink up as this wine is clearly in decline. A bummer. (86)

Medium strawberry red color with full transparency. Despite standing for three days, had to leave 1/3 of the wine in the bottle when decanting to keep the 2/3 I decanted clear of any cloudiness or sediment. The nose on this is worth the price of admission, showing breadth and complexity that spans a panoply of red fruits, flowers, spices, and even has a hint of tea. The palate is leaner than the nose would suggest, but it does deliver a fraction of the nose's promise with primarily strawberry, cherry, sandalwood, and a hint of licorice that lead into a medium-long finish that has some tannin grip to it. I did not detect 2004 green elements, but have not calibrated my sensitivity to the green elements (I just avoided the vintage in the cellar). This bottle was a winner - performed to expectations. Delicious. Drink or hold.

Light ruby / orange color. Nose is a bit swampier than recent past bottles. There is that nice cherry fruit though somewhat muted. WOW! This is Leroy as I remember it! Colour was downright ugly - cloudy and full of sediment with some brown on the edge. But the NOSE! Oh so deep and complex. sweet spices a la cinnamon and cardamom. Red cool ripe berries and in the mouth. Just slightly watery on the finish was the only drawback. I think this is in a good place right now. No need to hold onto it any longer.

Very pale rose color. Nose is typical sweet cherry with an herbal tint. This is where the comparison to past bottles stops. Unlike the feb bottle, this is angular and a touch short. Where is the generosity? If I didn't still have the memory of the last bottle, I would be happier. This is still very good, just not exciting. Least impressive of the many bottles consumed. (89)

Lovely, complex nose of red fruits mingled with mushrooms and spices, yet the palate was slightly thin. Airtime helped a tad, but the fruit really never wanted to show up to the party. The back end was very sour, though the wine perked up with the duck. Still, I was hoping for better. At least there were no greenie-meanies that I could detect (and I'm annoyingly sensitive to them). Perhaps this is in a dumb phase right now?

WOW!!!!!!!!!! Really eye popping nose. Classic vosne romanee barnyard, but a ton of sweet fruit. Huge aromatics, almost to much for some. Almost to big for a burgundy. bright cherries, smoke and good complexity. Curious that this wine has been consistently cloudy if you're not careful pouring. Need to stand it up to settle for a few days or whatever, then decant. The cloudiness seems to mute the smell and clarity that this wine offers when the pour is clear. very interesting.

Dinner with M/M Vino Me (Chez Vino Me): Decided to bring this along almost at the last minute, so I didn' give this as much time to breathe as I would have preferred, having just a brief decant off its sediment then returned to bottle. It breathed in bottle for about three hours before being served with dinner. Bright cherry notes, initially with a slightly sour edge, turning bright & sweet with time. Last sips had started to develop a nice mineral quality. Good acidity, with bright cherry and underbrush qualities- no green notes.

Frankly, in an akward state right now. A bit linear and hard, a bit agressive in the tannis and not all that fun. That all being said I still drank it and got a remarkable high.

Leo's Blind Tasting Group - Sept '10 edition (Txikito, NY): Surprisingly cloudy appearance which had a few of us thinking it was either quite old or was one of those 'natural' Cornelissen-type wines. Starts out with ripe strawberry and cherry flavours with a touch of leathery funk, a little awkward at first but with air it pulls itself together and develops a lovely perfumed scent. (No signs of the '04 greenies here, for those who keep track.)

Leroy 2004 Horizontal - Part 2 of L2O Dinner (L2O - Chicago IL): Single blind flight of all Leroy 2004s. Very classically Leroy in a very good way! Charmingly perfumed nose with lots of red fruit and sexy Asian spice mix.Red cherry and strawberry follow through to the wine's flavors with very good spice on the finish. I'd have liked a slightly longer finish.
This is at least the 6th bottle of this wine I have tried and frankly the bottle variation has been bizarre. Set aside one slightly corked bottle, I've had 2 bottles of this wine that showed even better than it did tonight and two others much worse. Same wine from same case that I scored in a range of probably 85 to 95 between 2007 and 2010. Perhaps I need to check the biodynamique calendar before opening another bottle.

What a great wine. Continues to improve with each bottle opened. Poured straight from the bottle and allowed to sit for 15 mins. Huge nose followed by savory, spicy fruit that is almost northern Rhone in character -but has an elegance rarely ever found in the Rhone. 2nd night had put on more weight but the fruit had not faded as do so many lesser Burgundies on the 2nd night even if carefully stored. Has Power with subtlety -the allure of Burgundy rarely delivered at a 'sane' price.

Just like the best of past bottles – forest floor, raspberry/strawberry fruit. An excellent wine for those that can take a bit of green – though no dryness on the finish with this one. (92)

In very good condition, still pretty cloudy but nose is full of petals and stems, very floral. Palate a bit confused and light, but pretty good just by the nose itself, this bottle the acidity a bit sharp.

The color of the wine was red brick and cloudy. It gave the impression that it was much older than 2004. The bouquet was unique, opulent, exotic, complex and hard to pinpoint. The taste was delicate and plenty of weight and length. A very special wine that had you thinking and wondering what the hell is going on. I am worried that the wine is showing a lack of ripeness due to the 2004 vintage. I still loved the wine but have reservations.

Cloudy appearance. There is some good fruit here, but it is reserved. You can see the potential, but it is not ready yet. This is better than the first bottle I tried. I'm actually encouraged that not all of them are bad. Bottle variation?

Pinot Smackdown 2010 (Ken's, northbrook IL): nose: attractive and piney nose with fresh tones of red fruits, red florals, bits of red cherries and berry tones. Very good depth and is very fragrant right now
taste: lithe and lovely on the palate with good medium+ acidity and tones of spices, pine sap, red fruits and bits of red berries. A bit lighter on the palate, but not too light
overall: not a single hint of the green tones that seem to pop up in a lot of 04s. There is a real pine element to this that is enjoyable and different. It is very well balanced on both the nose and palate, this is a very nice 04

Cloudy medium- ruby color; This bottle was completely green and flawed in IMHO but others found it drinkable. Tasted blind and after this taste before I guessed what it was I mentioned the "greeness" in the '04s. This was then revealed to be an '04. Awful. Reading other reviews there is probably significant bottle variation with this wine.

Electric ruby red. Gorgeous nose of sweet red fruits and a hint of menthol and earth. I have always loved the nose on this wine and can detect a hit of cinnamon this evening. Thick mouth-feel. Nice attack that speaks to the heritage of the vines, but falling a bit short on the mid-palate and finish. This appears to be ready to go or in a phase that required a few more years to totally settle. Doesn’t have the energy of past bottles. Still a very nice drink, but I don’t know where it is headed…..(91?)

Aromatically - damp wet earth faint cherry, and quite a bit of aldehydes lacking the usual fruit and purity of Leroy. This wine is not holding up well and is showing its age.

Tasted blind. Extremely light color and cloudy appearance had me thinking this was an older Dujac that hadn't been cellared properly. The nose was one dimensional, showing tons of ripe, berry fruit and little else. Also quite simple on the palate. Not very enjoyable.

Floral start with muted red cherry aromas. Less interesting palate, with modest red cherry flavors and good spice. Seemed ten older than expected, but not necessarily making it worse.

Light garnet, cloudy with some brick hues. Amazing Pinot Noir fruit on the nose: fresh raspberries, strawberries, forrest floor, hints of barnyard and spices. Mid-bodied, with soft tanins, nice, subtle fruit and very high acidity- somewhat off balance but very idiosyncratic. Long finish. Pairs nicely with creamy goat's cheese due to high acidity.

Domaine bottling. Purchased a couple of days ago on closeout for $30. Decanted briefly to remove any chunky sediment, then returned to bottle for travel. Dominant sour cherry note on opening. Pulled the cork upon arrival and left open over the course of the evening. Ruby color, but cloudy due to the fine sediment having been stirred up on purchase. Cherry aromas turn less sour, with a gun powder and meat note appearing. Bright acidity on the palate, with flavors of cherry, earth, warm spices and a subtle minerally quality. A nice pairing with the boeuf bourguignon. Absolutely nothing "green" in this bottle, but not a 95-point wine either. 89-92 pts, and priced right on closeout.

Incredible nose of raspberries and body funk and earth. Thought of Northern Rhone. Palate was initially tart of a touch hollow. Came up a lot over time. Became concentrated raspberry juice, bright acidity, sweet tannins, full mid-palate. Nose of forest floor...kind of cliche but it really is here! Dizzyingly complex. Unlike any other Burgundy I've had. It's alive.

Definately the most drinkable of the 2004 Domaine Leroy's that I have had recently. Quite frankly, the others seem to be in a deeply flawed place. There, I said it, I own a bunch, and God willing they will be much better in 20 years.

Just a little bit cloudy in appearance. Nose is strawberry/raspberry and funk--a little horsey with aromatic hay. Tasted between 7 and 9 pm, bottles opened at 2 pm. A little later, it briefly picked up an almost chalky mint character, but disappeared again. Clear fruit character on the palate with piercing acidity. Very pretty and everyone agreed it was drinking the best out of all of the Leroy in the night's lineup.

Red Burgundy (Waterford Wines Milwaukee): Domaine Leroy doesn't usually produce a Bourgogne Rouge. 2004 Lalu's husband dies and she didn't think the vintage was up to snuff, so some/lots were declassified. There's that cloudy appearance (post-ferm maceration...???) the color does suggest a bit more age than 5 years. a little orange in there. raspberry water fruited and lead pencil on the nose. Candied strawberry. palate shows depth of grey minerality. the fruit drops off at the finish and a light pepper takes over.

These bottles are going fast now. I put this as a joker in a blind tasting containing grand cru wines from Echezeaux. One of the tasters sceamed Leroy after two seconds, very typical Leroy nose on this wine. Well, this bottel felt stronger than the previous. The nose is just perfect, but this time the palate was nearly holding all the way. Need I say that Leroy Bourgogne 2004 won the tasting....

The nose on this wine is just crazy good. Wonderful underbrush, asian spice, super fresh peppery pinot. The taste is not quite up there, slightly dry on the finish, not super long. But very clean and really nice. I will consume my last two bottles within a year or two, the upside feels uncertain.

relatively clear, great nose with lots of fruit and spice. The palate reflected the nose with a alot acid. Not decanted but opened bottle 1 hr prior- allowed to sit in the glass for 10 min and continued to open and become more savoury and spicy with some sweetness. Still developing. Great wine espec. given 'components'.

From the pull of the cork a deep spicy note to the wine. Almost a pale orange on the rim. Really good wine. The palate is really light but the flavors are quite defined and persistant. That is pretty awsome wine Bill notes.

quite the wide rim with a hint of cloudy and light orange tinge. hints of graphite and light earth raspberry and classy spice box done in a delicate manner on the nose. quite wide expression on the palate and nose. spice tingle to the finish. medium acid with delicate bite to the finish.

This wine continues to greatly impress me. Super nose – yes there is some herbaciousness – but it integrates beautifully with the gorgeous pinot fruit. I am OK with this style but understand how it could put some off. Starting to drink well – a great example for the next 7 to 10 years. (92)

Stunning wine - best this year so far. The story is well known - and the price has increased a lot (reaching 100 Euro for a AOC). Burnt underbrush, fresh pinot almost chewable. The wine goes on like in slow motion. This is not far away from DRC quality - a little minus on the long but not 100 point long finish and the cloudyness. Looks more like muddy water than wine.

Daniel Does Burgundy (Eleven Madison Park): Very different showing from my last experience with this wine. It's getting some of the vegetal stemminess on the nose plaguing a lot of 2004s, but on the palate it's actually very pretty, very soft and plush with sophisticated, fine-grained tannins and very broad palate coverage. You can tell there's some grand cru juice in here.

nose: very interesting nose. Lots of sous-bois, plum, dark cherries, asian spice and some bits of florals. There is some power behind it while being delicate at the same time. It doesn't smell like any burgundy that I've smelled before as there is a new worldish sense to it. That said, what is very enjoyable about it, is that there is no green streak on it that has plauged many 04s that I've had
taste: Nice and feminine feel, but rich flavors of dark cherries, sous-bois, asian spices, and bits of purple florals. Lovely and refined with exuberant flavors with a lighter feel and nice medium+ acidity
overall: an intriguing burg. It doesn't really act like a burg at this point as it harkened oregon more for me. That said, its a very interesting wine and has a good pedigree considering the vineyards that were declassified into this wine. None of the green streak exists in this that plague a lot of 04s and the expression is very pure with a refined, delicate nature while having some power behind it. hopefully with a bit of time it will start to have some more burgundian characteristics

Floral nose, classically and unmistakably Leroy with some good red fruit. Flavors of red and black cherry on palate with hints of Asian spice. Moderate length and intensity, not quite as good as another bottle I had earlier, of course better than the bottle that was mildly corked.

Planned Impromptu Burg Wine Dinner (Asia Grand): Lovely mandarin peels thrown into a chinese herbal stew of salted vegetables and haw flakes. Very nicely dense flavours of al dente riepened strawberries and just a squeeze of raspberries. A little dry on the finish but does have a spring in its step that is enough to make this a very memorable effort. The one thing missing as compared to my first tasting of this wine is the secondary soupy characteristics that doesn't show as much in this bottle.

Dinner at Asia Grand (Odean Towers, Singapore): Garnet colour with a brownish murkiness and a brickish rim - most of us called it a Leroy Burgundy from the colour alone. The wax sealed bottle was another telltale sign. The nose seemed to confirm that, earth. mushrooms, orange peel, haw flakes, Giam Chye (preserved slated vegetables). It just somehow lacked the meaty gaminess that I usually associated with Leroy, especially since most of us have had this bottle before. The palate showed great weight with its sweetish cherries, black chicken soup and slight spritzy cola flavours, along with a decent balance from the acid. The long and densely lingering finish showed some cherry cola and a touch of oak. I was a bit thrown off by the sweetness on the palate and guessed Bass Philip before coming back to a Leroy Bourgogne when told it was old world. Fantastic pairing with the baked chicken dish of course.

The nose is unmistakably Leroy, but tougher to place geographically. Some spice, maybe a hint of the Narbantons. Would be fascinating to know the precise blend pulled from each vineyard but I would guess it may just reflect the production at each site. In any case, points are mostly for the nose today, on the palate it's still wound up a bit and a little shrill. Will hold the next for a year or two.

Strong initial funk. Saturated cork, off putting aromas. Bricking around edges. Initial taste harsh, quite acidic, and lacking fruit, except for some sour cherry. I usually am not bothered by "green" flavors, but when the fruit disappears and the green dominates I say enough. Will report if any changes over the next couple of hours or next day.

Beautiful harmony of fruit, oak, and tertiary flavors right from the moment the cork is pulled. Open at 10:45, we will see how it goes! Much more rich and supple now at 1:00. I am drinking it slowly down in the bottle by the way! Now, at 2, new fruit seems to be emerging with a fuller, heavier broadness. By the way, for those of you who are wondering why this wine is so damn expensive, here is the list from the Domaine of what is actually in the 2004 Bourgogne Rouge:
"Our other wines: - The CLOS DE LA ROCHE 2004 - The CLOS DE VOUGEOT 2004 - The CORTON RENARDES 2004 - The SAVIGNY LES BEAUNE LES NARBANTONS 2004 - The VOLNAY SANTENOTS 2004 - The POMMARD “Les Vignots” 2004 have been blended and sold under the Appellation 'Bourgogne rouge''."

The Finest Burgundy Domains: The Classical 2004 (Caveau): Very light red with brown tinge. Oh my goodness!!! This is the absolutely first time I am smelling black chicken soup in a wine! (both me and Paul agree) Seriously...I can smell the wolfberries , double-boiled with a minature black chicken with some "yuk zuk" (some flat chinese root herb). I love it already. Light bright cherries and strawberries ...which has the lightness and brightness and sweetishness of NZ pinot...but more...it has something special going on. Very pure, layered, savory...ends with truffly notes....it carries you gently from start to finish ...into the church...down the runway...into the dinner hall...then across the threshold of your new marital home...and gently lays you on the bed...Magic! Simple yet not.

Vinum 2004 Burgundy Tasting (Caveau, Singapore): Possibly the best Bourgogne Rouge I have had, but also certainly the most expensive one I have ever tried. Brownish, brickish colour. The nose was tres unusual and very Leroy - thick, herbal, meaty, gamey with a little touch of funk. It may sound unpleasant, but certainly was not - in fact, it was rather reminscent of Cantonese double-boiled black chicken soup. Intriguing and very inviting. If anything, the palate was even denser and thicker than the nose, with high-end 1er Cru, low-end Grand Cru weight - very intense, with layered cherry and plum fruit weaving in and out of the meaty, gamey flavours. Very full and ripe feel, all wrapped up in beautfiully balanced package, with just the right acid and firmness carrying the wine into a long, long finish with a really fine, satisfying resolution. Never thought I would wax so lyrical about a Bourgogne Rouge, but this was a Leroy and, as would be expected, was punching well above its weight.
Downside? This wine clearly speaks more of its producer than its terroir or the pinot grape, usually a minus point for me, but this was really yummy nevertheless.

First look at this one. Tres Lalou, technicolor fruit and nothing held back. As one might expect from a field blend, tougher to pick out a characteristic appellation but not tough to spot as Leroy.

My second bottle, about 1,5 years after my first (which I rated 95). It is still a killer wine with a red/orange muddy look (very typical Leroy look) and an amazingly complex nose of wild red fruit, flowers, smoke and herbal elements. In the mouth it appears round, integrated and very seducing. I was a bit surprised that this seemed to have matured quite a bit since my last bottle, but it might be the bottle (cork was slightly soaked).

The nose is reminiscent of cool climate Shiraz rather than Pinot, with black pepper, cherry, lifted florals and mixed spices. An intense palate, dense and spicy. This is an enjoyable wine if you don't mind that it may be hard to identify as Pinot.

God I love this wine. Pale cherry / pink and slightly cloudy. Gorgeous, penetrating nose – red fruit, nettles, coffee – wild, complex and intense. Still young and tight on the palate – rich feel though laser-like precision. Lingering now, but will only grow in stature and togetherness with time. Still too young a pup. Try again in 2012. (92++)

Opened at a local wine store as I was picking up some other wine, this was a treat. I usually like burgundy with some age so I wasn't that excited about trying this baby. However, I am glad I did. What a nose........this declassified now village wine had one of the best noses of any 04 burgundy that I have tried so far and maybe among the better young burgundy noses at this point in time. There was a complex mix of earth, mushroom and flowers that just delivered. The wine had a cloudy almost aged appearance and I was struck by the structure. I could smell this wine all day. I bought all 3 bottles he had to sell me and at under $90 I wish I could find more.

New Year's Eve with Friends: Opened to replace the flawed Vieux Donjon. The color is a murky orangish-red. The nose is awesome and wide open giving an enjoyable blend of sour red cherry, coffee/char, and barnyard funk. In fact, too much funk for many of the guests. I'd guess this is a touch of brett and varies considerably from bottle to bottle. In the mouth this delivers deep and concentrated red and black fruit with some earthiness. Tastes smooth and elegant. Perfect balance. The finish is excellent with good length and a satisfying flavor. Drinking very well right now.

Hit-and-Run Fun with Buns (Momofuku Ssam Bar): Enticing Burgundy scents, a mélange of horsiness and baking spice that promised a sumptuous, sappy beauty, but the palate failed to live up to the aroma, the pale cranberry fruit simultaneously lean (in density) and overdone (with its licorice flavor that makes it taste very Californian—I would have said RRV if you’d poured it blind). The spiky acid adds to the austerity of the fruit.

An incredible nose shows perfumed flavours of cherry, red berries, pomegranate, orange zest and savoury earthy notes. Post Insignia Dinner at Siggy's: The nose is awesome and wide open giving an enjoyable blend of sour red cherry, coffee/char, funk and a floral note. This bottle seemed less funky/bretty than the previous bottles tasted (which lead me to conclude incorrectly that this was the Vosne Romanee). Post-Insignia Burgundy Dinner (Our House): I poured this in a blind mini-flight with the 2004 Leroy Vosne-Romanee (see TN), and most people correctly pegged this as the Bourgogne. Open for business. Winestreet Does Leroy (WA Frost, St. Paul): It was a real challenge to switch to this infant after several fully mature wines. But I bravely carried on. Deep, rich, concentrated red and black fruit. Baking spices and a hint of cinnamon. Good ripeness here with no overmaturity. Nice minerality and earthiness underlying the fruit. Long finish with a real tannic grip on the end. Delicious now, but I think this will be even better in 5+ years.

Wines with Chris Larson: Notes from memory. Popped and poured. Consumed outside while sitting around the fire, but still looked cloudy. I am no expert on Burgundy, but damn if this isn't exceptional. After a half-hour in the decanter, the wine yielded a nose full of rich, spicy, caramely forest floor and red and black cherry. Just plain seductive, with the caramel especially just inviting you in. On the palate, smooth, smooth, smooth with a body that meets the richness of the nose. Some red cherry, some black cherry, some pomegranate, maybe some orange rind. You think the wine peaks on your tongue, and then low and behold, it just takes it up a notch with this intense explosion of purity--everything you've just tasted--only refined to another level with an almost laser-like focus and finish. I know this isn't your ordinary Villages level wine, but OMG, this is good.

(at The Modern – NYC) Deep, ruby red – cloudy. Penetrating nose of black cherry and earth – really explosive and wonderful. The tightest bottle of this I have had on the palate. There is a lot going on, but it seems to be a bit of a mess right now with the tannins showing through on the end. Same great intensity as other bottles so I don’t know if it is just this one or whether the wine is shutting down a bit. Regardless, a fantastic wine that needs a good 5 to 7 years to be at its best and should last for another 10. (91++)

Splash decanted 6 hours in advance...Wow did this show well. I was apprehensive of the vintage, but this was amazing. Light cherry red in color...the nose was explosive, red cherry, pomegranate, clove, cinnamon, tilled soil, rose petals...palate confirmed nose, very silky, focused, everything in harmony, no heat (12.5%), amazing mid palate minerality, long finish. It's hard to say any wine is a bargain @ $80, especially a Bourgogne, but if it can be, this is it!

Great red cherry fruit aromas and flavors. This comes across as a lean, balanced and classically styled Burgundy with really wonderful baking spice. Corked. Just seemed muted and slightly bitter on finish, but the corked character had bloomed when I went to revisit the last 1/3 bottle the next day. And when is there ever 1/3 bottle of Leroy left over? Only when it's damaged.

way too early, but no way I could keep my hands off of this. popped and poured. lighter color than I expected- very tight nose with some spice and raspberry notes. palate is very young- very tannic, with real depth- some sour cherry and herbal (not green) notes. not bad today, tons in reserve. I'll wait at least 5 years to try another and won't open my Leroy villages wines from 2004 for at least that long as well.

You know you’re in for a special Bourgogne when the bottle is individually numbered (No. 1401 out of 16200), and the cork is sealed with wax. The wine is a light ruby color, more strawberry colored than red/black. The nose is tightly closed down, but with swirling reveals hints of raspberry, spice and a very pleasant light vanilla/toast note. The precise flavors are rich, complex and sharply delineated juxtaposed with balancing acidity. The finish is quite long and drawn out. Over the course of dinner the wine seemed to add weight and intensity. I think this will become really special in a few years; my guess is to revisit this wine in 2011.

This is only a village wine - Nearly 20 years later this just knocks so many 1er cru and grand cru out of the park.
Completely and utterly memorable
Wonderful colour not too ruby, farm yard smells then on the palate so rounded, complex - perfect from the first touch on the tongue until it slips down the throat- retains its full taste and never breaks into layers - Just retains its rounded complexity throughout

A very good showing, the usual cloudy red-orange color. Still amazing nose of rose petals, potpouri, tangerine peel and red tea. Can smell this forever and ever. Palate with decent integrity but I still pretty how it showed 1-2years ago. Nose at least 93-94 and palate 90-91. Still not sure how long this wine will last.

3/14/2012 - fredb Likes this wine:

Same cloudy red-brown in color, nice floral nose but the palate is lumping together from 3D to 1D, in fact a but thinning and the finish is rather short, with tangerine juice like character. Drink up unless you like to smell rather than to drink.

89-92 pts, and priced right on closeout.

nose: very interesting nose.

There was a complex mix of earth, mushroom and flowers that just delivered. The wine had a cloudy almost aged appearance and I was struck by the structure. I could smell this wine all day.
