Solid champagne. Brioche, lemon curd, pear and green apple. Round and ripe style. Thought it was better and fresher right after opening than with air, so I’d drink it up within the first hour or two.

Deg 02/21. Köpt på plats 2021. Doftar friskt, färsk jäst och fruktigt. Smaken av mogna gula äpplen först, sen brioche, sälta och citrus. Lång balanserad finish. En favorit!

A blend of 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Chardonnay. Disgorged in February 2023. Medium yellow gold. Apple, lemon, dough, biscuit, chalk, and smoke, with high, fresh acidity, and very good length. Pleasant Aspirin-like bitterness on the finish. The mousse is medium-fine and still a little aggressive. Good concentration. Very young, but very promising. Needs another year at least. 90(+)

From 375. Oct. 2021 disgorgement. Really nice bottle, fresh with good balance and breadth on the palate. Probably at the top of what I normally drink in terms of dosage, but carries it well. I checked, and found it's 7 g/l, and that's about what it feels like, but again, well balanced. A great wine to have in halves for an easy apertif.

2022-07 disgorgement. Solid bubbly, a bit sweeter than expected, nice brioche notes and bubbles. Also alternated between open aromas and kid of closed down.

This version of Paul Bara's nonvintage Brut Reserve (Lot #135282, disgorged February 2022) is a straw-colored blend of 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Chardonnay. Sporting an active small bead and creamy mousse, it offers aromas of lime zest, Anjou pears, toasted almonds, brioche, cardamom and wet stones. Medium-bodied, crisply acidic and dense on the mid-palate, it delivers flavors that align with the aromas and finishes with good length. Bottles from this particular lot should show well over the next 3-4 years. Drink now-2027.

Lught gold color. Split with our group. From 375ml. Up on Leveaux Mtn with our picnic lunch. These are so darn good. Spot on from my previous notes. Great intensity, a classic Chamapgne style. Great exture and depth with wonderful toast and brioche. Definitely need to reload.

Served by the glass. To start in the art of this house in Bouzy where as it is traditional, a dosage raised to nine grams of sugar per liter receives you and advised to lay down. A majority blend of pinot noir and complemented by 20% chardonnay. For now aromas of cherries and red plums dominate the panorama. On the palate it is decidedly acidic and quite simple and remains to develop complexity in another seven years or so.

Champagne Bookclub (served blind)--Paul (Bricco Cucina in Laguna Niguel): Served blind. Paired with the more expensive 2012 Bara Comtesse and in this flight, like that of the Bereche flight we did, I preferred the less expensive wine of the blind pairing. 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Chardonnay with 7 grams of dosage and 6 years on the lees. Some lemon-lime yet it maintains good balance. It shows some nice power, too.

Light gold color. Drank a glass over an hour. Bread dough, wet stones, pear and green apple on the nose. The palate is bright, nice acid and overall balance, creamy, pear glace, panna cotta, just a little tropical fruit infusion on the finish. Quite appealing.

These were merely good, not early as exciting as the rosé. It has yellow fruit, it’s a little weighty, nice creamy bubbles though. My two bottles were discouraged in July 2021.
Disgorged in February 2022. Sweeter than I recall the prior versions of this wine, though I don't know what the dosage is (no info on the label). Nice, fairly simple.

Strong nose of citrus, apples, yeast, brioche, fresh baked bread, limes, minerals and light almond.
Medium plus in body with medium plus acidity. Crisp and refreshing.
Dry on the palate with limes, lemons, green and red apples, earth and yeast.
Tangy finish with limes and bitter herbs.
This Non Vintage Grand Cru Champagne is very tasty.
Nicely balanced with a nice mouthfeel, and better when not too cold. Tangy and interesting.
Good by itself or with food, and better after some airtime. I had it before, and this time I decided to let it breathe in the bottle for an hour. I liked it better this time.
Wine Spectator 92 points.
Paired nicely with caviar, but good by itself too.
A blend of 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Chardonnay. Aged in French oak barrels for a few months.
12.5% alcohol by volume.
89 points.
$50.

Flatiron Wine & spirits (San Francisco, Ca.): Nose of lemon, sliced apple, brioche, and floral notes, same on the palate, medium body, tasty, rich fruit, good acid, needs 2 years to peak, 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Chardonnay, forward tasting among its peers tonight, medium/long finish, and a nice aftertaste of honey/sweet fruit, $58. IMO, this Champagne has been a consistent winner championed by Kermit Lynch.

French road trip, mainly Rhône valley; 9/4/2022-9/18/2022: From open 75cl at Paul Bara tasting room. 80%PN/20% Chardonnay, 40-year-old wines; 7g dosage; disgorged August 2022) This baby jumps out of the glass with fresh lemon zest scent; the clean, medium-boded entry isn't saying much today, but there's some fine, juicy red apple fruit on the mid-palate. In 18 months' time this should be irresistable. A real bargain at 27 EUR/75cl at cellar door (case price). 89-90P

80% Pinot Noir, 20% Chardonnay. Disgorged 5/21. Pale lemon w/ fine bubbles. Fresh and clean, with red apple, white peach, lemon, honeysuckle. Youthful. Dry w/ med (+) to high acidity and med alcohol (12.5%). Consistent with the nose also showing some cranberry and grapefruit on the clean and minerally finish. Very elegant and well-balanced, with med (+) flavor intensity and length. Really nice.

From 37,5cl, disgorged 05/20. Opened as an apéritif before a 320 EUR bottle of red Burgundy (OK I paid 55 EUR nearly 20 years ago, but that's the current auction price). Well, folks, this evening it was Bouzy 1:Gevrey Chambertin Premier Cru 0. Oh yes, this Champagne tasted exactly as previously recorded here on 20.08.2021. 90P

By the glass. Balanced and classic, blending 80% pinot noir and complemented with some elegant chardonnay grapes. No malolactic. Refreshing notes of red berries mixed with other pastry. Pure elegance. On the palate there are notes of Danish biscuits with a good acidity and a rich texture. Dosage of 9 gr. Totally recommended. Honestly, I should start by filling my cellar with low-range bottles like this and letting them age the prescriptive five years.
Disgorged in 2017 (forgot the month). Major crowd pleaser! Very nice Champagne, better than I expected at this price. Lots of apple flavors, light citrus notes, sweet mouthfeel. Extremely easy to drink.

From 75cl, excellent cork, disgorged 05/20. Nearly a year since purchase at cellar door has done this good. Now there's ripe red apple fruit, nicely-judged dosage on the sweet side, moreish apple acidity. Not very refined, but delicious. This tastes like what you hope for, but so seldom get from a Grande Marque, but of course with that extra weight and creaminess of texture that Bouzy has to offer. 90P

From 37,5cl. Disgorged January 20, good Champagne cork. More settled than my previous two splits of this disgorgement, but still much less in balance than the 75cl bottles tasted (possibly of other combinations of vintage years and cellar maturation times). Pleasant, slightly grapey, friendly-medium sweet dosage, a bit of Bouzy PN warmth, but short, and in no way outstanding. 88P

A fine and complex nose of Baker's yeast, citrus blossom. lemon and aniseed. It is rich and layered in the mouth, with god intensity and a chalky, dry finish. It has power with finesse and over-delivers.

The nose is dominated by ripe apple followed by a slight honeyed character and minerality.
Medium acid with a mouth filling texture due to the Pinot Noir dominated blend and lees aging.
Rock solid for a sub $50 champagne. A very ripe style that fans of Bouzy should enjoy. Only complaint is the effervescence seemed a little aggressive. 11/18 disgorgement, but could easily go another couple more years.

From 75cl. This bottle a ringer for the 37,5cl split recorded on 31.12.2020, alas not recognizable from my description of the 75cl noted on 26.02.2021, despite being from the same degorgement date. Aggressive, short-lived bubbles, coarse texture like sourdough bread. More Perrier than Champagne. Not faulty, but not that much better than a standard Grande Marque NV either. 87P(?)

This iteration of Paul Bara's nonvintage Brut Reserve (Lot #133260, disgorged December 2019) is a straw-colored 80/20 blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. With a brisk small bead, it delivers an attractive package of citrus, pit fruits, pine nuts and bread dough. Medium-bodied, vibrantly acidic and layered in the middle, it concludes with an energetic, medium-to-long finish. Bottles from this particular lot should be at their best over the next three years. this bottle has been in the cellar 3-4 years so has a bit of age, persistent bubbles, fine yeasty nose, palate has real depth and power, a “serious” NV, lovely balance and length, a perfect food accompaniment, deserves some consideration rather than as an easy-drinking aperitif, 100% Grand Cru sourced and the depth and class shows

Disgorged 06/20. Colour is very slightly onion skin. Broad fleshy palate, obviously pinot-dominated (90%). Peach skins and ripe gala melons. Bitter dry extract on the finish hints at development potential but this is fun if simple now. ** (1/2)

A Casual Back Porch Get-Together (Los Olivos, CA): Disgorged 5/19. I really enjoyed this, with robust citrus and brioche notes complemented by the healthy dosage level. Not the most complex or elegant, but pretty much everything I look for from a non-vintage sparkling refresher.

Sauer - Ziereisen - Jura - Champagne; 9/9/2020-9/16/2020 (Escherndorf - Efringen-Kirchen - Arbois - Cramant/Bouzy/Verzenay): From 75cl at Paul Bara tasting room, bottle opened previous day. Younger vines than the Extra Brut: 80/20% PN/Chard; 50/50% base wine from 2013/reserve; dosage 7g, 4 years sur lie, disgorged Jul 2019. Astonishingly, this doesn’t taste sweeter than the Extra Brut, perhaps as a result of the different base wine (2013 instead of 2012), the younger-vine fruit, or the year since disgorgement. Full-bodied, delicious, perhaps a bit sullen, lacking “nerve” and “poise”? Fine value for 25€ cellar door. (89-)90P

From 75cl, disgorged 17.06.2016. Tiny, persistent bubbles; individual Pinot Noir character sufficient to make even the sceptic start believing in terroir; lead-note of ripe red apple and the generous, persistent acidity this implies (without any hint of green apple or, of course, Normandy-cider-like funk). Not very long, but delicious and moreish. A superb bottle, not quite as steely as the one tasted on 14.08.2018 (but more nuanced and vibrant than the last two) this is about as good as grower NV Champagne gets. Astonishing value at just over 20 EUR retail in Épernay back in 2016, this has matured beautifully, and would surely have held for several more years. 90-91P

2019 Suntacular--Champagne Tasting to raise money for Laura's House: Second time I have had this wine (other was back in 2017) and I have to presume that these are different disgorgements; however, no way to tell as the back label stinks for info. And, no matter, as with in 2017 when I found the wine simple in tone, I have the same impression again. Smells matchsitcky/sulfury. Tastes one-dimensional, simple, with zesty lime. Did not care for this again.

First tasting of standard cuvee from one of my favourite growers. Massive attack of citrus and deep fleshy, fruity taste. Nose unremarkable, medium bead and rather a short finish. Very satisfying for a standard cuvee. Guessing that this owes to good quality grapes and a high percentage of reserve wine.

From 75cl, disgorged 17.06.2016. On this showing, I prefered this when it was a year or two less mature. Now the last-season's-red-apple taste (and slightly wooly texture, but that might just be association?) together with the generous dosage makes for a big-boned and boozy Bouzy, reminiscent of the half bottle (of a 2015 disgorgement) tasted on 13.10.2017. 88(-89)P

Sampled from a bottle coded L131234 (disgorged June 2017), this non-vintage sparkler showed impressively well. Best showing (by far) of this batch (and I bought 24 bottles, all from the 2008 base) Very fruity, matched with bracing acidity. If only the other bottles were any where close to this.

From 37,5cl, excellent layered cork, disgorged 11.08.2015. Nothing wildly exciting, but an utterly sound, relatively concentrated PN-led NV with warm red fruit, excellent purity and a surprisingly long aftertaste. I don't expect much further development in this format, but am delighted to have bought 9 halves at 11,60 EUR each (at Salvatori in Épernay) and look forward to each and every one. 89P

Very pale yellow with steady tiny beads. Open knit nose showing ripe orchard pit fruits, pear, toast and almond skin. Crushed orchard fruits, buttered toast with medium (+) acidity and a decent finish with hint of white flowers and nut oils. Nice, easy drinking champagne.

Stewpendousness (Lower Haight, SF): Intensely perfumed. Complex and appetizing nose of slightly toasted baguette, green apple, and ripe yellow apple, and dark berry fruit (80% Pinot). The flavors are well-knit together and shifted intriguingly as it breathed. On the palate, good acidity but just a touch sweet for me - I'm guessing this is 10-15g RS? Great finish, great length. Moderately-sized bubbles - not exceptionally fine.

outstanding NV champagne made by pinot noir (80%) and chardonnay (20%) which characters by a fresh mouth with an enticing mineral taste coupled with orange peels and peche. Very pleasant and typical of pinot noir. Best paired with a risotto with saffron, porcini mushrooms and tyme. PD appreciates

From 375 ml bottle, purchased in 2010 so prob disgorged a few years earlier. Apple and pear aromas and flavors with some candied ginger. Pinot character more pronounced on palate with berry hints and rounded textures. Slightly aged, but very good concentration.

The wine is clear and bright with a pale lemon colour and small bubbles.
The nose is clean and developing, showing medium intensity aromas of yeast (bread, cereal and hints of walnuts), green fruit (green apple), citrus (lemon peel) and hints of stone fruit (fresh apricot).
The wine is off-dry with a medium(+) acidity. It has a medium alcohol and a medium body with a creamy mousse. It has medium intensity flavours of yeast (bread, cereal and hints of walnuts), green fruit (green apple), citrus (lemon peel) and hints of stone fruit (fresh apricot). The finish is medium(+).
It is a very good quality wine. It has a persistent finish and a fresh acidity that balances its creamy mousse. It also shows some complexity provided by autolytic notes, but a better example would be even more complex.
Can drink now, but it has enough acidity and some flavour concentration to develop more complex tertiary aromas 3-5 years after disgorgement.

Last Sunday Tasting of the Year-Champagne!! (SF Wine Trading Company): Full yellow, not too lively in the glass. Strong scent of ginger. Full bodied (in sharp contrast to the Fourny before it). Some wood present. Tart red fruit, soil filled, tannic finish. Long, serious, and dry, but by my recollection, I think I prefer the flavors of Bara's rose.

probably one of the best NV champagne cuvee' I had the chanche to drink so far. Pinot noir (80%?) makes the most of it. Pleasantly aromatic with tons of minerality. A classic quasi-blanc des noirs that seduces your taste and at the same time makes it typical if comparedto many others champagne with little carachter. Chapeau

Nose: The nose is very toasty with green apples, brioche, roasted nuts, and warm dough notes. There is good depth to this with all of the tones being well balanced.
Taste: The medium/full feel is on the creamy and refined side with medium+ acidity. The acidity is refreshing with green apples, brioche, and some warm dough notes.
Overall: This was from a 6/10 disgorgement. The age certainly has rounded this out and it's drinking beautifully right now.

A Champagne Weekend; 11/30/2012-12/1/2012 (San Francisco): Light yellow. Pinot nose. Full bodied, great flavor complexity with a touch of baked bread, deep black cherry fruit and a distinctly floral edge. Serious, weighty wine with a long, tannic finish. For me, the best wine today.

The nose of this was intriguing with light spiced pear, apple and toast, though those notes were much less prominent on the palate and faded over time. Overall, lacked the richness and depth of a very fine Champagne, though perhaps to be expected at its $40 price point.

Yummy! If Veuve Cliquot is the equivalent of the perfectly manicured model who looks great every time, then this champagne in my mind is equivalent to the quirky sister who can look stunning but you're never quite sure whether she'll look so great every time! Great biscuity, yeasty nose and rich fruity mouth that is perfectly balanced by the acidity to deliver a luscious finish.

Dinner at the Wild Poet's (HM's place): I actually really enjoyed this. Quite a few of us picked it out as an NV rather than a vintage Champagne, but we all thought it had lovely quality to it. A beautiful nose here. Some yeast, earth and mushrooms, apples, and then bit of chalky mineral scents. Brilliant stuff, all very inviting. The palate wad rather creamily textured with a nice mousse surrounding nicely balanced flavours of lemons and apples, accompanied by a bit of spice, musk and a touch of mineral moving into a long, fleshy finish. Lots of depth, texture and beautiful balance for an NV. Great stuff.

2008 disgorgement. Two more years of bottle time has done this Champagne well. Light yellow color. Medium sized bubbles. Nutty nose which has now picked up a some biscuity aromas. Medium lemon/citrus body with plenty of chalky minerality. Very good acidity. Still a touch too sweet for my tastes in a Brut. Medium length finish. A great value N.V. Champagne.

Don't know the base year on this. Good clean Champagne with the expected red fruited character, good acidity and balance. There is not a lot of depth or complexity and the wine is not in any way memorable. Not what I would expect from what is reputedly among the best producers in Bouzy.

Clear pale gold core with small bubbles in a steady bead. The nose showcases light breadiness, green apple and starfruit. I didn't get much... On the palate, flavors of tart white fruits, Turkish delight and brioche taste delicious and match up to the sharp acidity. Small bubbles give a good mouth feel while the finish is moderate in length with a bit of wood and musk poking through the unripe fruits. Drink now - 2013 Excellent Quality. 89 pts.

Too sweet....a dosage problem? I don't know. I picked up 3 bottles on "super discount " ($25), and I'll sit on the other two, hoping with time the sugar will dry out or the rest of the wine will gain some interest. Right now, I'd have to say it's one of the least appealing Champanges I've had in recent years, very much resembling a demi-sec or "dessert Champagne".

Medium bead with a very light mousse. Smoke, rose petal, lime and a light overlay of roasted nuts form the nose. The palate has a nice intensity of flavour as well as racy, well focussed acid and a slight citrus tang. Champagne of this quality is a steal for the price (around $55AUD).

I'm a newbie to champagne, but this seems totally closed up to me. Some research suggests the NVs need a bit of time to relax a little bit. If true, this might be good. Right now it's so tight I have a hard time with it. Palest yellow, medium fine mousse. Floral nose, with no creaminess/grain at all (no malo and no oak on this, I believe). A searing laser beam of candied citrus on the palate, with a LOT of concentration, and a long, cohesive finish. 90+

Drink now-2024.

Youthful nose showing bread, minerals and citrus. Palate is very accessible already with a smooth and creamy acidity and a long lime peel finish. This is very good aperitif champagne and should benefit from a couple of years of post-disgorgement cellaring.

With the temperature over 100 degrees, time to sip a Champagne, nice mousse with tiny bubbles, nose of lemon/lime cola, touch of honey and nectarine, and spring flowers, same on the palate, medium/big body, did very well with the Smoked Salmon, tasty, easy to enjoy today, with a long finish.

Lemons, faint sour apples, even fainter limes balanced so well by bread. This is a consistently outstanding champagne. We've had good luck with the half-bottles too.

Robust och grovhuggen och lite för kort frukt i den druvbeska avslutningen. fin mousse

Did not spend a lot of time on this, but I remember it being fat in the mouth with heavy fruit and tasty sweetness. very well received.

One of the best QPRs I've found in Champagne. Nice brioche aroma with richness and brightness well balanced in the flavors. I'll buy more.

Bouzy Grand Cru. Very nice. Light yellow color. Light effervescence with medium-large sized bubbles. Tight nutty nose. Lime, nuts, and a chalky minerality on the palate. Definitely leaning slightly towards the sweeter side of Brut. Medium bodied. Medium length finish. Good value.

A very crisp, dry, acidic wine with toasted almond on the nose. The taste dissipates quickly and there was a slight chalkiness on the aftertaste. Will revisit tonight.

Ripe stone fruit (mostly peach) on the nose. Full bodied, fairly sweet, some Pinot austerity at the end, but still too rich, unstructured, and sweet for me.

Twelve grower champagnes in Islington (London): Fine, bright, fizzy, rhubarb fruit, high acidity, but the sweetness came through and ended up nicely balanced

Maybe a touch freezer burned. Very white grape on the palate. Unusual for Paul Bara. Not sure that I liked it. Actually, I think its a little corky.

A very nice champagne. A little malty forward with hints of green apple and significant pineapple flavor, then a faint butterscotch finish. Lively bubbles that are a little bigger and last not quite as long as i expected for a bubbly of this stature. Nice long finish.

good price for a grand cru. when first opened it was a bit astringent but soon opened up into a nice creamy champagne with good fruit. perhaps a little on the simple side but very pleasant.

A high dosage attempts to hide the bitterness and low quality fruit. Past bottles seemed better - perhaps the latest batch isn't up to scratch? Seemed over oaked and simple. Redeeming quality was good mousse and mouthfeel.

$50 full retail. Light, fresh, youthful aromas of citrus, green apple and bread dough. On the palate, balanced, with a penetrating mineral and acid core; fine lemon and green apple notes. Well structured, and, I would assume, built to age fairly well...
