2005 Domaine Drouhin Oregon Pinot Noir Laurène (375, last bottle). Similar to previous notes. Mid-ruby, rim variation, brick edges, viscous; red fruit, tea leaves, smokey, older Pinot nose; low-mid acids; mid tannins; good fruit still; semi-long red fruit, wood and smokey finish. 17 UC Davis, 92 other scales.

Mike's American Series Oregon Dinner (Hawthorne, Kew, TW9): Prunes and darker red fruit on the nose. Lacks freshness and with cloying tannins and after some time in the glass became a bit better on the finish. I was really hoping for more as it is the oldest Oregon I have tried by some distance. Still a treat to try, but ultimately not my cup of tea.

Mike's Oregon Dinner (Hawthorn): Hard to pin this wine down; it certainly didn't drink like an 'old' wine though. Interesting nose, spicy and with notes of cola and Bovril. Bright on the palate, savoury with a touch of ink, and decent length. Probably would have been better to drink this on its own rather than with the two other reds in the flight, which were (in completely different ways) both rather extreme.

Mike H’s Oregon @ Hawthorne: Deep, dense ruby.Dark and getting darker. Consistent with a bottle six months ago — this has gone from being lovely a decade ago to a dark, brooding monster, tightening and darkening in the glass from a mid ruby tasting sample, to dense, light sapping darkness ten minutes later. Lots of wine here. But uncompromising. Needed larger glasses and to be five degrees cooler. **(**) or is it (**)**

Mainly Oregon (Noizé): Single blind. Far darker and denser. Almost opaque. Denser, slightly sweatier, very chewy. A whole dimension of extra tannin here, needs time. No, doesn’t improve with food. This has retreated in to a difficult phase. *(**)

To summarise...yum...cherry backed by berry, earthy and leathery notes...more of the same on the palate, sweet spice as well, perhaps a smidge of sharpness/sourness but nothing off putting. Lovely with steak tartare and chicken liver parfait and, well, by itself...Nice.

Really nice, the fruit is still there but an earthiness has set in that wasn’t there a few years ago. This is the last of my case so I’m glad this one got buried away in the cellar. Very different experience, shows how these can age well and even past the expected drinking window.

WOW! I never expected an '05 Laurene to hold up this well. This wine is so well balanced, with incredible mouthfeel, and a perfect match for our seafood chowder If you still have some, open one up, about 2 hours before you want to drink it, and enjoy!

Coravin fun - Randoms (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. Earth, leather cherry is slightly jubey, sweet spice, a little clay note here as well. Ripe cherry with a little jammy underpin and talc textured tannins on the palate, all travel long with a touch of non-intrusive alcohol and woody, bitterness on the finish which lends complexity. Yum in a slightly big way for a Pinot

Lovely nose of violets and savory red berry fruit. A bit tannic on the palate with notes of plum and smoke. Nicely acidic. Long finish of earthy dark fruit with char and iodine.

Brilliant note by Doug that perfectly captures my experience with a bottle of this last night. Last consumed 7/14/15 and recommended waiting 3-5 years. Somehow, I obeyed myself. Absolutely spot on. Pulpy cherry and leather in the setting of a mossy Oregon forest for me was this bottle. Not sure of it’s trajectory though. This is one of the best 05s I’ve had in a while.

Hah, did not wait 3-5 years as recommended by my own TN of 3/28/20. Opened to accompany baked chicken. Dark but translucent ruby. Heady nose of musty cherry, full-blown violets, damp cellar, hints of currant. Layers of iron-laden pulpy raspberry, ripe red plum, earth, velvety meaty tones, and a suggestion of smoke on the palate. Bright acidity and firm tannin. Longer finish of potent red berry fruit, earth, iron, and cinnamon. A hedonistic DDO. Loved it.
2005 Domaine Drouhin Oregon Pinot Noir Laurène (375 bottle; $35 at the winery in 2012). Consistent notes over the years. Mid-dark ruby, some sediment, brick edges; mid alcohol (13.9); red fruit nose, pronounced; cherries and wood; dry; mid-body; balanced; mid-acids and tannins; pronounced Pinot fruit on the palate; red fruit, cherries; long finish. Some life left. 16.5-17 UC Davis scale, 91-92 other scales.

Popped and poured to accompany baked chicken. Darker ruby color. Nose of violets, black cherry, raspberry, a bit of cinnamon, earthy soil. Densely packed on the palate with layers of blackberry, black raspberry, and graphite, with a bit of tart cherry and iron at the end. Structured and moderately tannic with fresh balancing acidity. This showed very coiled and young. Impressive quality but needs 3-5 years to stretch out.

Color is solid, lovely fruit and more subtle notes incl poss oak influence. Fantastic smooth and seamless texture - impression of sweetness, balanced with fully integrated tannins. Lots of flavor, med length. Great wine, seems to still have some life ahead of it, surprising given recent other experience.

Maybe it’s just this bottle, but this is not in a good spot. I’m surprised because DDO’s wines have always struck me as structured and age-worthy, though admittedly the oldest I’ve had has been an 8-year-old 2009 just recently.
This just tastes really flat and dull, fades quickly and doesn’t leave much of an impression

In my cellar for a while, brought to OCNJ and drank with Valerie. Decanted for about 30 minutes, drank over 90.
Dark, rustic ruby color. Nose of red fruits, raspberry and smoke. Palate showing black raspberry, strawberry and blue fruits. Nice minerality through the mid palate, some smoke/charcoal on the finish. Medium weight, long finish.
Really drinking well right now, thought this might be fading at this point. Still bright and energetic for an Oregon wine at this age, elegant and refined, really drinking well right now. Would drink over next 3 years, should last longer but seems to be in a nicely balanced spot right now

Oregon @ Portland (Portland, London): Slightly darker than the 04 with a denser ruby hue. Denser, drier, slightly dustier fruit. Dark and savoury. Grippy and full on the mid-palate. Full and/but balanced. The best/most serious of the three. ****

Decanted for 2.5 hours before Thanksgiving meal. Glad I opened it early because after an hour+ it was still tight. Some more time opened up the soft fruit of raspberries and plum with a hint of pepper. Went well with our meal. I have a couple more bottles but think this one may have peaked so drink up.

Popped and poured.. Followed over 3 hours. Minimal aeration. Last bottle was 3 years ago.
Aromas were bright red fruit, acetone, forest, pine. Palate was shrill red fruits..no blue or plums. Firm. Solid tannins. A bit nervous and disjointed with some alcohol intrusion. Finished medium length with a bit of alcohol.
Still unsteady in my opinion. Hoping for an upside as its now 10 years old. Perhaps a lengthy decant would've open the door for this unruly child.
I will try and sit on the rest for another 3-5 years.

Deep ruby. Mixed spice and dark cherry on the nose. Quite rich and full. Attack shows the same cherry fruit alongside slightly redder and tarter fruit notes. After two or three hours this has relaxed and rounded to show a very smooth and complex wine. The fruit profile and perhaps a touch of oak spice might point one away from Burgundy, but this is a restrained and classically-styled new world Pinot firmly in the Burgundian mould. Still on the up and obviously no hurry. ****

Decanted for an hour. Bright nose of fruit, full mouth of fruit with judicious acid and a strong finish. Opened up with time. Young and vibrant now, I think this could age into something more mellow.

Exceptional upon opening: an exceedingly pleasant barnyard palate combined with plenty of early season plum and mild tobacco; then it matured over the next hour, showing more lean fruits (cassis, sour cherry) and herbs (menthol, thyme, violet) but still retaining some of that bacon and grilled beef. A little bricking, but still well structured and balanced. Wish I had more than one bottle.

Winophile has it right. Much better for the additional time in the bottle these wines just don't need to be rushed. This allows them to show a more complex character by being given some time for the tannin to soften. Preferred this to the Clos de la Roche we had along side.

Haven't had this in a 4 years, and I liked the earlier bottle better. This is still quite nice, but is a bit more brooding overall than I recall. May require more air, more time? In any event, on the pop:
The nose - quite a bit of funk initially. Most of this blows off leaving spice and perfume in a somewhat closed aromatic delivery. On the palate, hits the mid-palate as lush, smooth and balanced. A resinous backbone holds everything together. Relatively tannic on the finish, but in balance with the fruit. Seems to have the structure for further aging.
Update - quite a bit better 2 hours later. Note to self - decant or open early next time around. "Better" means more balanced, a bit lighter on its feet, less brooding, etc.

Popped and poured. showing well within 15 minutes, continued to evolve and open over the next hour. Would decant and wait on next bottle. Fruit starts to show up after 45 minutes.
Nose is ripe fruit, earth, Oregon terroir. Drank this after a Savigny, so very different expression of Pinot. Drouhin Burgundies are outstanding wines, their Oregon wines are equally well made and true to the new world terroir. Great fusion of the two styles.
Palate is ripe red fruit, tart cherries, raspberries, rich earth, spice, pepper, some oak. Great flavor mix on mid palate. Long finish for this style wine - 20+ seconds. Drinking well, Wine should continue to improve

Color: Ruby Smell: Bing cherries, mushrooms, clove, and dusted earth Taste: Bing cherries, cranberries, raspberries, and hints of cedar Overall: Complex and exactly what I look for in Oregon Pinot Noir. This walks the line in body on the razor's edge between Old & new styles. Medium + body, Med + acidity, Med+ fruit, with a long and thought provoking finish. Outstanding.

Dense dark cherry red. Interesting nose - dark red fruits, a touch of wet earth and some spice here. On first sniff I'd place this in Burgundy I think. Palate is similar - quite fleshy but an elegance and restraint here, plenty of depth hinted at but currently this is held back in reserve. Good acidity and nicely mineral too. Needs a bit of time but this should be very good. ***(*)

Darker ruby. Nose closed at first then opened up over 30 minutes to show scents of violets, anise, earth, raspberry, and bing cherry. More closed on the palate than a year ago, with eventual tightly clenched flavors of black raspberry, tart cherry, star anise, and even a bit of pomegranite. Firm tannins but lots of refreshing acidity. Long, stony finish. Needs plenty of time, but a quality bottle evolving nicely.

big, overipe pinot with lots of character. Oak charater on the nose, does not overwhelm. Definitely a mouthful of a pinot. This extracted wine has a touch of raison on palate as well as the usual pinot descriptors. Long finish rolls around your mouth.

Opened w 45 min air in bottle, medium dark ruby, lighter, almost a little brick on the rim. Nose of cherry and dark berries, leather, spice and earthy notes. Very nice well integrated on the palate with dark cherry, blackberry, spice and light Oregon earth notes - silky smooth with a moderately long finish. Still a lot of structure but this seems like a wine nearing it's peak.

What happened? I loved this wine a lot and it showed very expressive fruit when I had it 4 months ago - all the fruits seem to had gone in the recent 2 bottles that I opened - one 3 weeks ago and one last night - Could pinot experience a "closed" period starting from from its 5th years??? Very strange and I can only sense a very faint tomato and cherry in the nose with some elevating acidity on the palate...surely not as enjoyable as I used to have this and not sure when i should open my remaining 3 bottles....

The nose is already showing a bit of age. I get scents of au jus and some caramel mixed in with some good Oregon funk. The "structural" scents are currently leading the way while some blackberry and cherry scents show in the background. This is incredibly soft on the palate, and I love that. Slow dark cherries evolve on the palate and some dark charcoal notes peek out late on the mid palate. The tannins build slowly and gently, and they dry fully on the finish while faint strawberry flavors show themselves. This has some great things going on, but it feels a bit subdued now and may be going through a transitional phase.

Very dark in color looks like i just poured a medium body cab....Nose; Dark cherries, minerals, spice and tobacco which i loved...As the night went on I also got some floral notes. Palate: Dark cherries, blackberries, spice, a hint of mocha and cinnamon. Wow this is one of the best pinot's I have experienced drinking in awhile. Extreamly well made with great acidity and a lengthy finish. This bottle should last another decade imo..I am very pleased to have one more because i cannot wait to see how it developes down the road..Cheers!!!

Oregon Pinots young and old (Browntrout, Chicago IL): nose: gorgeous and flowing nose of dark red fruits, potting soil tones, dark plums spices and a touch of red florals. Good depth and very expressive at this young age
taste: lovely and caressing medium/full feel with medium+ acidity with tones of dark red fruits, dark plums, spice tones and red florals. Very well balanced and very elegant on the palate right now, but with some silky tannins to boot
overall: this certainly does need some time to fully show itself. But, this is a real classy pinot right now and will certainly get better with time.
Excellent stuff. The Laurene is a benchmark every year in the willamette. Very expressive and intense, with chocolate, moccha notes, a hint of sous-bois, and even some wet pipe tobacco, blackberries, bing cherries with a core of fresh acidity that makes this a standout and a holdout against all of the competition from 2005.
Day two there is licorice and more pinot magic as the sweet fruit and oak have ceded some ground. Noticing the dusty, fine grained tannins.
Might keep a bit longer and actually improve further. But I am not sure Parker is right about keeping this for more than two decades.

A touch of white pepper, followed by light moss and a touch of barnyard, that smoothed out within 30 minutes, suggested more age potential. Even cherry and boysenberry notes, and expertly crafted for a balanced finished. I too feel like this has more to go, so open something else for now.

Read my 3/10 tasting note for more info on this wine. This is the highest score I've personally ever given. It ranks in the top 10 wines I've ever experienced. Here's the huge But: I decanted this bottle and shared w/several friends. And we all learned together the importance of the right glass. We started with a generic small tasting glass for the taste, and then went to Reidel Pinot glass; the one with the flared rim. ALL THE DIFFERENCE IN THE WORLD. Seriously. A sophisticated wine needs a sophisticated glass.

My first ever Oregon wine, and I loved it! Seemed really well made, although the cork wasn't the best in the world (actually pushed into the bottle a little as I inserted the corkscrew). A bright, crimsom color, that through the Waterford crystal did ample justice to the glass. Lovely powerful aroma, with cherry, forest fruits and other subtler smells that beggared description. Taste was no let down; filled the mouth and released layers of fruits and again cherry (some with a Maraschino bite to them"). Longish, but very dry finish. Cearly too young, although I enjoyed it a lot. Just kept wondering why I'd waited so long to discover Oregon.

Strikingly balanced. Just a bit of game on an otherwise dark perfumed nose adds some character and complexity. On the palate, this evolves not just over time, but within a given sip, hitting the tongue with rich flavors, the midpalate with some brightness and a hint of stems. Long finish with tannins unobtrusively in the background. Probably better in a few years, maybe scary good by then. I may never find out, given how well it's drinking today. This wine is a center of the plate pitch for me; not as overwhelming as some from California, not as subtle / intellectual / hard to understand as many from Burgundy. Good fruit depth while at the same time defining elegant. While I'm overbought on Pinot, I'm very happy to have picked up a few of these.

Very light colour, and an excellent nose of delicate cherries, confected fruit and chocolate. In the mouth this has incredible balance - very light, whispy at times but then with confident complexity. Notes of bitter chocolate, more cherries, damp earth and some mushroom. This has the ability to grow old very gracefully. Excellent stuff at £18, which I think is half the price of what you can buy it for in the US.

Lighter style with nice fruit and texture and with time it does pick up some weight as well. Nice balance and well rounded if you give it time to open up a bit. All around quite a nice Pinot Noir and I am scoring it on it's qualities alone. This wine reminds me very much of a nice village level Burgundian wine, not unlike a couple I've had from Côte de Nuits Villages. Unfortunately, that's the main problem with this wine. Those wines that it reminds me of, are about half the price of this one. $60 is too much for this wine. If I were to factor price into the score, I would certainly knock a couple points off for being a poor value for the money.

This wine was way too young and not given enough air, so hard for me to score on how I liked it. Great subtle nose of sandalwood, black tea, strawberries, and earth. Most of the nose moved to the palate along with some cinnamon and more bright red fruit. Would love to try this wine again in 5 and 10 year increments. Hold!

Dark ruby. Nose developed over the evening into a perfume of Indian tea spice, black cherry, raspberry, camphor, and violets. Concentrated and grippy on the tongue with bing cherry, black raspberry, iron, and blood orange flavors presented with immediacy and balance. Nice acidity and fine tannins. Finish was long. Very satisfying early showing for what is likely to be a long-lived wine.

This has a dark ruby red color and no surprise, an excellent wine. It has a nose of black cherries, rose petals, forest floor and spice. On the palate black cherries, spices and earthy. As with most Drouhin wines, whether Joseph Drouhin or Domaine Drouhin, nice balance. This one will be better with some cellaring time on it. This one has the potential for some long term aging, at least 15 years from vintage date, and quite realistically a 20+ year wine.

popped/poured at restaurant, no decanting. I would have believed this was a classic Bourgogne, but I wasn't blind. The nose was horse sweat; just the perfect amount cooperating beautifully with strawberries and raspberries. How do those aromas cooperate? Amazingly in this wine. The taste was dominated by the perfectly succulent mouthfeel. Well integrated harmony of berry and cherry fruit, fine tannins and dirt. My WOTN.

Tasted at winery today. Had medium, dark red color- almost a tinge of violet. On the nose wine was rich with dark fruit and some earthiness. Wine had medium body and silky, velvet texture. Dark red fruit, oak, with some depth. Wine was very refined and smooth. Was difficult to pick up on complexity (after drinking a lot of wine), but feel the complexity will be there in a few years if isn't already. Excellent quality Oregon pinot. This wine has a lot of strength without being in the over-the-top California style pinot. Look forward to consuming this a few years down the road, but will be difficult to wait because it is so good now. Probably one of the top ten Oregon pinots I've tasted.

Decanted for 2.5 hours before Thanksgiving meal. Glad I opened it early because after an hour+ it was still tight.

Palate is ripe red fruit, tart cherries, raspberries, rich earth, spice, pepper, some oak. Great flavor mix on mid palate. Long finish for this style wine - 20+ seconds. Drinking well, Wine should continue to improve

A hint of spice greets the nose on top of rich funky fruit. The rich dark fruit shows when tasted along with nice acid and tannins. The wine has good things going on, but is still not terribly well integrated. More time in the cellar please!

Very high quality Burgundian style wine. Well balanced and outstanding fruit but not overpowering.

Wow, talk about complexity and depth. The 'Laurène' has this great spice component to it that I found quite addicting. Dark red with sweet fruits on the palate with a refreshing tartness that really compliments the fruit and spice. Highly recommended.

Had two bottles of this tonight with another couple at V Day dinner at Country Club. Did not decant, just pop and pour. Nice fruit, not heavy tannins, fruit came out more towards end of the bottles. Nice balanced french style pinot with great fruit and flavors. I will keep buying this until the club is out of it. Best part is they only charge $80 per bottle in the restaurant, such a deal!!!

Delicious wine - improved significantly with decanting. Strong earthy backbone, which slightly overpowered the strong fruit before decanting. Nice clean, well balanced Pinot. Will be very excited to watch this develop.

Medium color, amazing bouquet of leather and earth, light fruit (strawberry or raspberry) on the front of the tongue with a lovely finish of spicy leather and earth flavors. Very lovely more traditional french style pinot similiar to eyrie's style.
