Last bottle of 12, PnP. Thought it's time to empty it before it is over the hill, but wow, it did again a step up compared to the last one. On the nose blackberries and black currant, liquorice and underwood, on the palate fresh, good depth and a very long finish. Classic Riserva in a very nice spot now, quite mature but without any signs of declining, it shows still a lot of life and there is no hurry to empty the last bottles.

PnP, required just some minutes to open. Mature, classic Sangiovese, red fruited with tertiary notes, on the palate still with good freshness, medium+ bodied and long finish. In the style of the house with a rustic touch, in a good spot now, most probably it will not improve anymore, therefore drink it within the next 3 years to be on the save side.

Perfect cork, well stored. Fantastic to drink the same wine we enjoyed in Firenze in 2012. A lot has happened with this wine since.
The baby fat is off as well as the pink filtered glasses. Not a very good showing from quality POV.
But as a dinner companion, this is a modern Chianti that drinks with pleasure and without any kind of problems. Delicious acidity beat all the food we put on the dinner table.
Should be good for a number of more years.
If you prefer fruitf**kers, you're already too late on this ball.

(11/7/20) This bottle, although very youthful in appearance, was clearly on the slide toward oblivion. It had a muted nose of cherry and a thin cherry palate full of dusty tannins. There was only a hint of tertiary development. The acidity was fading, and the tannins were clearly starting to overtake the fruit; 13.5 abv. (**/14/85)

I thougth this bottle was gone many years ago. But it came UP in cellar in a wrong place. What a woderfull surprised, 12 years old. Very Mature, with age tones of ripe cherrys and with a cote of age barrels. Actually deeper mouthfulnes, smooth and woderfull ripen long ending. I trynet to store Nipo longer now.

PnP. Evolved very nicely since I had my last bottle two years ago. Classical Chianti Riserva near at its peak. On the nose moss and prune, warm. On the palate fresh, the tannin are quite smooth now, medium bodied and long finish. Very good with Saltimbocca and Risotto and at its own after. Drink now or during the next 6 to 8 years, superb price to quality relation.

This is a superbly delicious Chianti with a great tannic structure, pristine acidic backbone and still rather young.
At 11 yrs old, this is still a rascal. Purity, precision and ... cherries. Complex, interesting and well balanced. Slightly short, with early signs of maturity and the smallest whiff of farm land.
From a deliciousness pov, this clocks in on my palate at 100 points. So delicious I could just keep gulping this juice.
W/wife. At Komakine, Yokohama's most ambitious Italian food.
Ruby, no signs of age. Beautiful nose of forest floor and mushrooms. Cherry and raspberry joins the nose on the palate. Resolved tannins, balanced. Medium + finish. Overall developing complexity and lots of interest. Super value. Just entering prime drinking. Wish I had a case.

Quite tart after opening, needs some air. On the nose moss and prune, warm, on the palate fresh and dry with good structure and length. Very typical, classical Sangiovese that shows its beauty with its age. No hurry, it will last for another ten years and may even improve. Excellent wine for this price and for all that have enough patience.

Deep, rich, layered and a REAL wine. Has matured and become an adult since our previous encounter in 2012. Still has several years of good service ahead. Lovers of thin, acidic Chianti should go elsewhere.
Next btl in ~2018. At Italian inspired organic Bisi-Basi in Yokohama.

Opened during an Italian Cooking class with family members, along with a Zenato Valpoolicella. While both were good, everyone considered this wine far superior. Definitely a fuller-body wine that paired well with heartier dishes, with great lingering flavors.

I'm thinking that most raters don't let this open up enough. On the second night it really showed well. Nose of currants and rubber with lots of sour cherries and medium tannins on the pallette. A great QPR!

Nice rubies colour with some bricking. On the palate, you can smell the evolution, but it is good evolution. Aromas of red fruit, in particular, sour cherries, but also “empyreumatique” aromas (typical of Chianti) of rubber, caramel and also brown sugar. There are also aromas of sweet Autumn leaves. On the palate, the wine has a good fruity attack as well as a good seam of acidity typical of Chianti. Good length for a wine of the caliber. I do think Nipozzanno is a good value and a quality Chianti. Unfortunately ate it with pizza when it deserved a good meat or meat pasta. 88 at this point.

Nice color. Nose of bright cherries. Taste young still but with good red berries. Fruity with a slight dry finish. No tannins but smooth alcohol and acidity. Expected a bit more but Very drinkable. Ate with a med rare prime rib, done right.

First bottle in 11 months and now halfway through a case purchased in 2011. This has developed very nicely since last time. Softer and more full-bodied now, having put on a noticeable amount amount of weight. There's also better depth and definition to the mid-palate, and the finish shows more delicious, ripe, dark fruit. Round, balanced and delicious, this was always an excellent "food" wine, but is now good enough to drink on its own. 50+5+12+16+8=91

Bottle PnP and consumed over an hour. Surprisingly this doesn't taste like a typical Chianti in my opinion, but I guess due to riper vintage? Dark violet color with slight brownish, taste very mouthful, cherry, plum, minerals. I think its very ready to drink now, doesn't required food like a typical Chianti. Sad to only have 1 bottle.

Lean and a little acidic with drying tannin on the finish which is a little sour. Cherry, dark chocolate, coffee, pot puree, herbs and earth notes dominate. The 04's a vintage I am familiar with were much better. Drink up.

Not as good as the previous bottles I have had - given the reviews, looks like a lot of bottle variation. May also be getting past its prime and starting to decline.
Somewhat on the lighter side, with sour cherry, spice and some vanilla. Not great for a reserva, but okay with food.
Many better choices for the money - not upset this was my last bottle.

Decent chianti with typical cherry notes. Somewhat light and non-exceptional for a Riserva from good vintage. Expected more but fine for everyday meal at home.

A very pleasant easy drinker. Nicely balanced fruit / spice & tannins... all on the mild side but together make for an enjoyable wine. This one would be easily over powered by heavy food, so pair with light snacks.

I bought six bottles of this when it came outand got a high review. The first four bottles were below my expectation. This fifth bottle was outstanding and i think it needed some bottle time. I did try it in several glasses before i found the right match (reidel chardonnay glass).

Somewhat austere but 2 hours open is quite accessible. Comforting black cherry compote in a luxurious armchair in an updated leather-appointed gentleman's club where smoking has been banned but still lingers in certain nooks. Hard tannin but the fruit is perfect now.

Consistent with my previous notes. Not a world-beater - just textbook Chianti - and as such, a terrific food wine. Medium-bodied - but packs quite a punch, with lots of ripe cherry and dark currant fruit character. Nicely balanced, polished and elegant. Amazing quality considering they produced 121,000 (!!) cases of this. 50+5+12+15+8=90

Much better than I previously gave it credit. Classic chianti. Medium bodied, not overpowering, nice dusty, drying tannins. Enough fruit and acidity to keep it lively. Fading a bit toward the end of the bottle. Not built to last forever but a good quality wine.

On PNP. This is an exceptional chianti and just about everything one could want in a chianti. Ian d'Agata's and JulianGray's notes ring true. Based on some other notes, there must be some btl variation, because I can't think of anyone I know who likes red wine who would not like this. And, if you like real chianti, you will really like this. I am going to look for more.

Black cherry core with radiant rose petal rim. Medium bodied, but generous, mouth-coating notes of fresh and dried cherries, raspberries, red currants, tobacco, leather, chocolate, florals, rosemary, and peppery spice. Structured, sneaky complexity, fresh acidity, and an ample finish that highlights iron minerality. Excellent.

Consistent with prior notes. Maybe even getting a little better as the tannins soften. Seemed a bit less tart with even a hint of sweetness on the finish this time. A solid, medium-bodied Chianti Rufina. Be sure to give this at least 1-2 hours of air time before drinking. 50+5+12+15+8=90

Good fruit & tannin, medium body wine - this one and the other vintages have been nice. Initial impression is that some of the fruit in the wine diminishes as the wine sits, otherwise I would have rated slightly higher.

this wine is definitely improving, a shame that this was my last bottle, I have the impression that the 2007 vintage in Toscane will be sooner in its drinking window than the 2006 vintage, this wine had lively fresh acids, this time it comes closer to a "normal" Chianti-experience, excellent P/Q ratio

Black cherries and spice, medium body, nicely balanced start to finish. Very nice wine over 2+ hours. Also tasted the 2008 at wine shop recently which seemed to have even more spice. Would buy the 2007 again for cellar and will pick up and try the 2008.

Non-blind. Had immediately at Trattoria Kitti (Firenze). Impression: outstanding (especially for a Chianti) One of the darkest red Chiantis we've had. Nose is filled with cherries on the first hand but also elaborated with some more interesting herbal, plummy, round aromas. In the mouth, this is spectacularly concentrated and rich for the genre, with a long, captivating finish. As many point out, this is a low acid Chianti. Unusual, but nevertheless works well thanks to marrow and fruit. Tannins are M and of good spirits. Gained a lot with time in the glass. Will live long. Will gain from some more years in the cellar.

Consistent with prior note. Tasted (non-blind) alongside the surprisingly good Villa Antinori Toscana 2008. Shows a translucent garnet color in the glass and a pretty Chianti nose of dark fruit, flowers, earth and spice. Medium-bodied, this offers an attractive combination of sour cherry and blackberry flavors. The finish has good length, with a citrus note and a hint of vanilla lingering at the very end. There's wonderful balance between the fruit, acidity, tannins and oak. Not a big wine, but very elegant, refined and satisfying. Frescobaldi and Antinori are among the very few houses that can consistently mass produce at this outstanding level of quality. The people giving this 75-81 point scores should probably just stay away from Chiantis. Excellent QPR at around 16 bucks. 50+5+12+15+8=90

I opened this wine with Ian, Sib and Jeff, and it was a hit with everyone. I poured a little taste for everyone, then decanted the wine. This wine really should be decanted for a few hours, as the air helped coax and the complexity and nuance out of this tight wine. Bright purple color in the glass with thick legs. Initially the aromas were very restrained, but over the course of five hours the wine evolved to show rose petals, cranberry sauce, cassis and tobacco. The palate is full of big tannins and savory red fruit. Lots of crushed red berries, sweet pipe tobacco, and a medley of herbs. So Tuscan. The wine is rounded out with hints of toast, mocha and milk chocolate. The acid is a bit low for my tastes, and the wine is a bit too rich for pizzza, but this is still a really nice Chianti. Lovely purity of flavors, and a mix of fresh fruit and savory components on the finish.

A rustic Chianti Rufina that was medium- to dark ruby in colour. It offered cherry, iron, earth, oak, vanilla, coffee, spices and chocolate on the nose. On the palate the wine showed sour cherry, iron, earth, oak, vanilla and some coffee, with medium- to high acidity, medium length and a rough mouthfeel. The wine was best a few minutes after opening the bottle and started to decline after about two hours in the decanter. Won’t buy again.

This was touted by some of the wine mags as being pretty special, better than 90 rating. For $17.99. I agree it is GREAT Quality to Price Ratio and a darn good Chianti, but no more than 90. To the sight, it is cherry juice, neither inky and dark or thin. Nose is pure bing cherry and bramble. Taste is same as nose, but more woody and earthy, a little spice with good tannins that do not overwhelm. It had a really good, long finish. It did not quite stand up to a spicey sphagetti dish I made (made it TOO spicy), but I do not blame the wine...other than to say this is not a super-robust wine. It is ready now, but some people might enjoy it better in a year if they don't like the tannins, which should soften.

Drank w/dinner over 3 nights. Initally PnP. Dominant oaky bouquet w/cherry, red berry & spice aromas. Somewhat restrained palate at first, slowly evolving toward earthy notes w/flavors of tart cherry & plum, herbs, white & black pepper, and tar. Dry, medium-bodied, w/chewy tannins, moderate yet lasting acidity, & medium+ finish. Lacks complexity or structure, but does fine as a daily weeknight drinker. A notch or two below the '06 IMHO.

Everything this wine is billed as in the wine mags, have to say is so. Dark Sangiovese red at pouring, lighter notes on then nose - fruit, herbs, wood. On tasting, it starts out on the lighter side and then it hits you: berries, wood...a serious but not heavy/in your face Italian red. Finish is medium, but good. It is strong enough to stand up to red sauce the first night and etoufee' the second, but it is not the most in your face Italian red out there. Instead, it is more nuanced, creeps up on you and you go WOW, this is really special (especially f $17.99). Unfortunately, we got the last of our small town's wine store supply of 2007 and they are into 2008. Will be interesting to compare and contrast the two vintages. That said, this wine (2007) is still a little tight (young) and would benefit from aeration or better yet, hold it for another 6-12 mos.

Dark red, minimal fading around the edges. On the nose, bright cherry, eucalyptus/herbal & floral notes and some cabernet-franc like woodiness. On the palate, medium-light bodied, cherry, blackcurrant, eucalyptus, wood... if you would have put this in front of me blind, I might have guessed Coonawarra Cabernet. Medium+ acidity giving way to a medium short finish of fine but firm tannins and dark tobacco and fruit. Good stuff.

Real smooth and accessible Chianti. Once again, this producer offers a consistent Sangio that pairs well with food. On it's own, the strong Cherry Cola, leather, and herbal notes come out most. To me the nose is straight up Sangiovese, with some light floral and cedar. Paired with Roasted Chicken in Red Sauce with mushrooms, this bottle offers a wonderfull backdrop. Really meant to go with that sort of combination, and a great italian table red at this price.

Ok bottle of wine. I am no Italian wine expert, but this was disappointing considering it was rated #1 by WE. Brought the bottle to a nice Italian restaurant and they were surprised at it being #1. Tasted like a regular Chianti with some structure and descent flavor but nothing there that justified any good rating. This wine has lessened my respect for WE. I have two other bottles I will hold to see if it matures any, although it does not seem to have the structure. Gave another bottle away.

As per Gordonuium...Decent value, nothing spectacular, and I must say that the initial taste wasn't as good as it was a repeat about an hour later...initially was very acidic, tanninc and sharp. It mellowed and i experienced some dark fruit and light earth on palate that was light to medium bodied with mild acid and tannin. All smoothed out some. With appropriate food, improved. Finish was long in nature and ended up more like dark berries, and some light oak. Was nice enough for 18$ CAN.

Decanted for 30 minutes and had with pizza. Palate was a let down relative to the nose. Cherry / sour cherry / some herbs on palate. On palate, more cherry / black cherry with a medium body, nice acids & medium finish with some bitter green tannins noticeable. Okay buy at this price - 89+/- Prefer this producer's Tenuta di Castiglioni 2007 to this wine.

did not take great notes but this is a really nice wine. It has more weight and less acidity than most Chiantis. It is very smooth, I would say more "New World" than most Chianti. But very enjoyable. Drank with chicken parm. Also - agree with Bmikkel's note about consuming the same night. I drank the last third of the bottle the 2nd night and while still good it was starting to decline.

My first Community Cellar Entry. Chose this wine for it's #1 ranking of 2011 in WE. Decanted for only a minutes. Aroma hinted of sweet maraschino cherries which would've obviously overpowered and disappointed a Sangiovese wine if it tasted as the bouquet previewed. Yet, its taste was smooth, consistent, confident, yet understated and therein lies its power. Will drink again following some age and longer decanting

My first Community Cellar Entry. Chose this wine because ranked as WE #1 wine of 2011. Decanted only for a few minutes. Sweet cherry aromas, but smooth, mild, and consistent throughout. Seems to start and finish at same place. Calming. Great value for $23. Would buy again.

Really liked this wine, great balance in both the fruit and acidity on the first day that didn't fully carry into the second day. I would recommend decanting for a half hour and then consuming on the same night. Great deep and dark berry nose, intense for a Chianti. Almost a perfect wine for Italian food, one can do much worse under $20. The palate is full of dark berries, the typical Chianti cherry is an afterthought on the finish, which is the only real negative of the wine since it is much shorter than I'd expect at this price point. But mouth-feel is silky smooth, I didn't pick up much heat or bitterness at all, incredibly smooth wine. One of the few Chiantis where chocolate notes are easy to pick up, even on the finish this is one of the last flavors to leave the palate so leads to quick return sips. Overall I really enjoyed this wine, some interesting characteristics for a food wine, great expression of Chianti Rufina, thought to be frank I wouldn't call this the best QPR at $19.56 (17.99 + tax from Costco). At $12 or so, this would be an absolute deal, unfortunately for this wine, there are Chianti's and Sicilian varietals in that $12 price range that can equal this but you have to be savvy to discover them. Excellent for a mainstream, RP rated, mass marketed wine.

10/23/11 - I'm not sure if this is typical of Rufinas, but this wine is fresher and less tannic than a Classico. The fruit is more dark berry than Sangiovese sour cherry. There's a nice little floral component too.

This was #57 on the top 100 for 2010 and I can not fathom why it was even considered. I have tried 4 different bottles and if you want a street brawl happening in your month with your food, just sip on this. No balance, all fruit and no character. Way too heavy to be called a chianti. Way too unfriendly to be called wine.

- Garnet color and aromas of peach, tobacco and black currant. It's balanced and has flavours of sherry with a medium body. Smooth texture with a medium finish - Not so strong on the nose, garnet tones in the color, scent of plums, peaches and a hint of tobacco, with traditional oxidized taste in the mouth. Tannins with good structure but a bit of bitterness in the end, therefore a little unbalanced. Not so long , lasted at least 8 seconds.

This is a feisty one. It's so full of character that it stands out in its price range. Flavors of ripe dark cherry, chocolate, violets, and spice abound the palate. The experience is engaging with gripping tannins that call for more cellaring, yet charming at its young age. Drink 2012 to 2022.

Had it again at the lake and was alright, but not something i'd buy again...but very likely will get better in a year or two as others have said and also, would be better with a better food match. At MLCC in winnipeg. $20. - my notes: "Dark red and some earthy notes on nose. Palate is very aggressive with the acid and some gritty, but light, tannins. Some cherry fruit in there. Better of course with food – perhaps a good pizza/itialian food wine – but a little to “harsh” for me."

(13.5%) 90% Sangiovese with small percentages of Malvasia Nera, Colorino, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon – Savory herbs with tart red cherries and spice on the nose. Fresh in the mouth with more tart red cherry before mineral flavors emerge to add acidity as we head into the mid-palate where this one dries out. From there you get dried herbs along with dusty chocolate before chewy, persistent tannins drive toward a finish where the oaky creaminess comes through and lingers on nicely. This wine received 90+ points from most (93 from WE) of the major publications. While I may not go that high (bit heavy on the oak for me) this is certainly an enjoyable and well made wine that I would be happy to drink again. Which is good as it is widely available...

This is proberly one of the best "brands", the Chianti Nipozzano, I has followed over some Years. I startred with the 2001 vitage and now up to the 2007. I am impessed that they can keep the "taste-picture" so equal fore each vintage. But you can of cause experiense the differense from each year, fore with the 2003 on top. Which I will give 89 points. I am glad the "tax-free" compagnies has staed offering this wine on most of the Norwegian Airports. So I can refil my cellar to a fair price, around 20 dollas pro bottle. And one more thing, its very ageing-frindly, more than the "profesonell criticts" says. Its a wine fore everyday and a good secure companion to the candle-ligth dinner with roasted meat and more.

Another good vintage from Nipozzano, this time savoury side upfront with sourcherry and cranberry flavours, an earthy edge and mushroom notes. Very easy to drink, balanced overall with a medium body, just enough acidity and tannins to match.

Very nice wine. DW thinks there is something floral on the nose, I'm not sure. We both agreed to dark fruit, leather, and smokiness on the nose and palate. Crisp acidity. Medium length finish.

definatly purple and inky. looks like a big wine. weak nose, but getting some wood and truffle. Savory tasting right off the bat. Evidense of black fruits, cola and leather. back palate has lead pencil. interesting. might be better with food. silky mouthfeel, great finish and medium plus tannins.

A super value wine at $16.00. Deep ruby in color with a great nose of dark fruit and dried fruit - prunes comes to mind. Good mouthfeel, with the same dark fruits up front followed by a mocha like aftertaste. Pretty acidic which makes it feel bright - really, really drinkable now. Highly enjoyable. Have some higher $ Chinatis on the shelf that will be hard pressed (ha - no pun intended) to surpass this one. Going to get more for sure.

No Formal Tasting Notes This wine came across as big and plush, almost flabby, oak presence was evident, and just dark fruit, Not what I want from a sangiovese based wine. Was not really that impressed, would rather go and buy the 06

Very balanced - with dark fruit, hints of wild game and a lemon note on the lengthy finish. Everything is there and in perfect proportion. Incredible quality when one considers the astronomical amount produced (121,000 cases) and the extremely reasonable price ($14.99 @ Zachys.com). A very well made example of what a Chianti should be. 50+5+12+15+8=90

Couldn't help noticing the broad range of scores on this wine. Personally, I would have scored t in the low 80's upon opening. However, on day 4 (not vacumed nor chilled!) it showed much, much better, so I ultimately upped the score significantly. So for those about to pop the cork on this one; give it a lot of air before drinking!

Popped and poured. Ruby with pink coloured edges. Sour cherries, spices and burnt wood. Smooth, with a dry and slightly acidic finish. A bit too oaky for my palate, but still OK. I tasted this without food, but it would probably have fared better accompanying a simple pasta dish.

Earthy and a bit gamey which I like, but while it had good weight it was a bit hollow and turned a little underripe on the finish. Drank like a decent but unexciting Chianti Classico.

Good garnet ruby color. The nose was subdued and seemed to lack any real depth. The taste was soft, some hint of red cherries, maybe some earth, but honestly not much of anything. This wine disappointed. As a WS top 100 of 2010, I expected a lot more out of a chianti riserva that came so well reviewed. I'll try it again tonight and see how it does on the second night.
REVISED 3+ days This is one of the very few times I've seen a wine improve significantly over 3 days. I've been tasting a glass every night since opening the bottle, and it has steadily improved, just a little at a time. It's a bit closed right now, didn't know Italian wines did that, thought it was more typical of French wines. From almost no nose whatsoever, it has now come out a little more, not like typical Chiantis but enough. The taste is of some black plums and sour cherries, maybe even some wood too. The finish is quite long, maybe 30-45 seconds I'd like to buy a case and open a bottle every 9 months and see what it does.
2+ days more The nose has now developed even more, with hints of dark chocolate and fruit showing much better. I like this so much more now and the price is right

Strong, simple licorice aroma and flavor with some herbal oak on the finish. A bit of cherry builds with time but it's not significant compared to the licorice. Young, tight, medium/full, and food complementary after an hour. Needs a few years. Next day the fruit shows more sangiovese typicity but it's still licorice/tar based. The youthful angles have rounded. Very enjoyable. Good short term cellar candidate.

Deep opaque ruby color. Reserved nose giving only youth filled with pretty much oak and red fruit coated spices. The palate is structured fine. High acidity, great level of tannins that are fine-grained and mouth-drying. The fruit is much nothing else than cherry in it's many different forms. Fruit profile is cooler than expected. The high level of oak nor the medium high alcohol does not stick out. A balanced wine that was much better at day 2. Very good but I don't find it to be worth the 20 euros for which commands here.

Elegant, reserved and complex with spicy red cherry, cedar and tobacco flavors. Light bodied, and initially a bit short on the palate, this wine - had with a truffled pasta dish in a restaurant in Florence - blossomed with food.

clear nice colour - mid dark. nose: tobacco, tart notes, some black currant and oak - not bad. taste: balanced, opaque - very nice still young tannins, refreshing, fruits and some mushroom notes. again - nice balance! It doesn't taste like regular chianti reserva but anywy is worth its prix.

Impression: outstanding (especially for a Chianti)
One of the darkest red Chiantis we've had.

"Dark red and some earthy notes on nose.

However, on day 4 (not vacumed nor chilled!) it showed much, much better, so I ultimately upped the score significantly. So for those about to pop the cork on this one; give it a lot of air before drinking!

REVISED 3+ days
This is one of the very few times I've seen a wine improve significantly over 3 days.
The finish is quite long, maybe 30-45 seconds
I'd like to buy a case and open a bottle every 9 months and see what it does.
2+ days more
The nose has now developed even more, with hints of dark chocolate and fruit showing much better.
