Cork in pristine shape, bottle fill half inch above neck, color of medium ruby with definite orange on rim and body. Red fruit nose, prior note of camphor not present after six hours open. The fruit is more like a mix of baked cherry on the front of the mouth but then raspberry on the mid and back palate after 24 hours open but kept refrigerated overnight. The tannins are mellow now and anise notes are present and the finish is a subtle 30 seconds long. Just lovely nebbiolo fruit! The wine seems fully mature but probably has a lot more life left in it.

Last tasted this in 2016. Cork in pristine condition. Wine character has changed from red cherry to more raspberry flavors. Red fruit nose with a very subtle camphor note to add complexity. Wine was not decanted, just poured out with much swirling. It was immediately accessible with the red fruit more like red raspberry than red cherry previously observed. It is in an excellent drinking window and was a superb match to veal marsala. Nebbiolo is a fun grape! Happy New Year to all.

Lovely upon first opening showing a beautiful nose of rose petal and menthol. Same with the palate with nice cherry fruit. Lovely fruit and earth and nice structure. But the wine fell apart within 1 hour of opening and lost its nose and palate. I'd pop and pour this and drink it rather quickly.

The wine looks brick colored and shows aging. There is moderate sediment in the bottle. It smells like raspberry, red currant, prune, tar and forest floor. Taste is like pine wood floor, leafy smooth. The body is medium/full and wine has smooth texture. The wine finish is medium long 30-50 seconds and has medium acidity. 94 pts.

Sad face as this was my last bottle. Enjoyed with Osso Bucco and Risotto 'alla Milanase. Outstanding for the price point. Why you hold well made Barolos for some time. Berry and rose on the nose, with some tar. Tannins still solid as is the acidity. Finishes with a strong earthy/tar component which gives way to a disctinctive berry and acidic note.

Paired great with NY Strips. No change from my note in 2/2017 although this was great with the steaks: "Great nose - rose petals, sour cherry, tart cherry, tobacco. On palate, great fruit (sour cherry / tart cherry) with medium+ body, high acids, stout tannins and long finish." Tannins have mellowed somewhat and it threw a fair amount of sediment. 93+/-

Young. It seems really young. From the notes from 5 years ago I thought it was young but having resolved tannins, this strikes me as surprisingly young still. Lots of structure. Still seems like some velvety tannins. Very acidic. Cherry fruit, some floral hints, a bit of stony minerality. Beautiful if a little simple. Did not decant, and it took about 6 hours to mellow out.
Was nice paired with braised oxtail from _Fat_.

Upon opening the '05, it showed extremely youthful and lifted, with bright red fruits and florals. The palate was lean and acid driven with dried strawberry, cedar and minerals giving way to fine tannin, and finishing austere. However, on the second day of checking in, much had changed, as the bouquet took on deep black cherry enshrouded by dusty florals, minerals and spice. On the palate, silky textures were offset by a mix of acid and tannin, yet its sweet cherry and strawberry fruits created a wonderful contrast, as minerals set in and inner florals amassed toward the finale. The finish was long and structured, yet also balanced, as mineral-drenched dried cherry and hints of spice slowly faded amidst cheek-puckering acidity. The '05 Castiglione needs more time and I believe will one day soften into something quite pretty.

Decanted for 2 hours and paired with grilled pork chops. Didn't note color. Great nose - rose petals, sour cherry, tart cherry, tobacco. On palate, great fruit (sour cherry / tart cherry) with medium+ body, high acids, stout tannins and long finish. Oddly, I enjoyed this more on it's own than with the grilled pork chops which was odd. This has improved from my last tasting in 1/2014 although I would rate similarly given I am trying to rate more conservatively now. This bottle has improved 1-2 points since then on the same scale. 92+/-

Sadly this was consumes too young, but it was still enjoyable. This young wine still has tons of acid and tannin on the finish which leave the wine feeling...young and powerful. The fruit is great, but this wine needs at least another 5 years...probably 10 years. It softened slightly by day 3.

Wonderful Barolo with a mouthful of dried cherries, a. 20 second finish on the mid to back palate from nicely maturing tannins. Happy to have a couple more of these but will wait 2-3 years to let the tannin soften some more.

[PWS' Vietti Dinner with Luca Currado-Vietti at Bellota] Translucent medium ruby, slight purple tinge. Reticent red & black cherry bouquet with earth, dried flowers, redcurrant, pomegranate, meat, leather, licorice, dried herbs & spice notes. Medium full, deep, intense, juicy, vibrant, succulent & sweet red fruit flavors, quite tightly held by plenty of grippy tannins, chalky extracts & fine balancing acidity; rustic, chunky & muscular. Long firm sturdy finish.

Checking in on 2005 #Barolo tonight, the @viettivino Castiglione is showing intense perfumed red fruits and spice on the nose. Notes of pomegranate, tart cherry, clove, leather and rose all formed in the glass. On the palate, a driving-force of concentrated red fruit and spice was bolstered by grippy tannin, while a wave of brisk acidity prompted the taste buds to water, leaving a finish of sweet, fresh cherry, herbal tea, spice and inner floral tones. Still showing its youthful tannin throughout the experience, but this has all the right ingredients to be a true classic in another 5-10 years. To think that this is Vietti's entry level Barolo--Wow.

Decanted 90 minutes. This was somewhat closed down in spite of the decant, and it gradually improved over the course of another hour. Menthol and a bit of rose petal on the nose. On the palate, cherry, roses, strawberry, and a bit of cocoa/tobacco on the medium finish, with significant drying tannins. I have saved part of the bottle for tomorrow, and I will see whether it is better at that point. For now I would say this needs three hours of decanting, or a few more years to put itself together.

Awesome. If served blind I doubt I would have guessed it was a barolo. I had it open for about 90 minutes before dinner but we did not decant it. It did not throw any sediment. Red berry fruit, stony minerality, and licorice. Long finish. Fair amount of structure still but the tannins seem to be resolved.

We found this wine didn't have enough structure. The nose was rich with a hint of rose. But the palate was flabby and watery. The finish had cinnamon. Still a very nice wine and a good price point for Barolo, but not quite the experience one would hope for.

Doft av körsbär med inslag av kryddiga och blommiga toner (rosor?). Smak av syrliga körsbär, plommon, röda bär och nyanser av tobak. En god Barolo, som känns tillgänglig redan nu, även om det finns en hel del syra i vinet.

This is drinking well at this point. I usually get a few bottles of this every year and it never disappoints. I'm still partial to 99, 01 and 04, but the 05 is nice and probably more accessible than the 04 at this point.

Dark fruit and floral on the nose. Pronounced minerality. Fruit seemed a little faded. Tasted of rose and something earthy. Sounds strange, but massive tannins, yet delicate. Enjoyed.

Decanted for 2 hours. Dark red color (very dark for a Barolo). On nose, tar, black cherry, herbal, tobacco. On palate, cherry, sour cherry with medium body, stout tannins (though fine with food) and high acidity. Long finish. 91-92 range. Would buy again.

The wine was medium ruby towards brick in colour. It offered rose petals, red fruit, red cherry, menthol, chestnut, tar and some liquorice on the nose. On the palate the wine was rustic and tight yet balanced, with red fruit, lingonberry, red plum, rosewater and some chocolate, paired with very firm, fine, dry, slightly bitter high tannin, high and mouth-watering acidity, and very good length. Serious structure. Still needs time. Retry in 2015. 89 points for the time being.

This 2005 has opened a wee bit in two years, perhaps in honor of Burns' pending birthday on Friday. The full fruit is masked by strong tannins, and it remains red without noticeable shift in color yet. A robust glass of warmth with a lasting finish on a frigidly cold night in New England.

This is traditionnal style, unoaked. Nose of crunchy red fruits, with brown tobacco, fresh cuted tree. The mouth more crunchy than expected, with big tannins, tobacco and blackberry bush notes . It is a complex wine, but with some rusticity. Balance has to be rejudged in few years.

Decanted 4hrs. Semi-opaque ruby-garnet lightening at rim. Cherry, orange peel, cedar, licorice on a shy, pleasant nose. Medium-light bodied and a bit lean on the palate; dusky sour cherry, reticent notes of herb and cedar. A vanishing, slightly sour finish, although short shows good typicity.
This is a traditionally-styled Barolo without apparent new oak or absurd degree of extraction, but quite restrained and perhaps a bit victimized by the stingy 2005 vintage. Nonetheless, there is balance here and a welcome classical style. More than that, it's quite drinkable at this young age, while the '06s and '04s remain considerably less approachable.

I like this wine. Decanted for several hours. Nose reeks of sour tannic red fruit, hazelnut, blood orange, and roses. Rustic and elegant. Brownish-red in color. Strawberry, apricot, roses, herbal-tobacco mid-palate and sour finish without much substance. Fades away without incident. Nice wine though. Old world, substantive. Village-blend Barolo. Some coffee and black licorice earlier on, now more nuanced, florals and dried fruit, herbs.

Decanted and poured, this wine could have used couple of hours in the decanter prior to serving. This begins somewhat disjointed with a reticent bouquet. Airing brings more accessible aromatics that feature strawberry, cherry, floral and tar notes. The color is a medium tarnished ruby. The medium bodied palate requires some time to become balanced and displays firm tannins on the finish. This will require of a couple of years of additional bottle age to show its best.

Italian Nebbiolos (Scott's house): STRAWBERRY. Much more fruity than any other wine on the table, actually a little boring too. Did nto appear to change much over time, seemed to appear mostly as a one-trick pony. Overly simple, I don't see this improving much, sadly. But I would try again with 3 years or so on a bottle.

Vibrant red color with the beginnings of orange hues at the rim. The nose is of tar and roses and some notes forest floor. That’s where the fun ends…for now. The palate is disjointed, with beginnings of complex flavors of tar, orange peel and strawberries with good dose of tannin. This is like a teenager that has potential to succeed but still has not grown up. Given the present showing of the wine, I would let this alone in the cellar for another 3-5 years.

If this is the king of wines, the emperor has no clothes. The 2005 Vietti Castiglione is a light, forward Langhe Nebbiolo that never should have been classified as a cru Barolo. What's there is good enough - chocolate and strawberry and a nice persimmon pucker at the end - but this bottling just makes me miss the warmth and power I expect in a good Barolo.

Medium depth of color with some obvious variation around the edges. Complex aromas of cranberries, red licorice, musky perfume, blueberries on wafers, just beautiful. Medium body with strict tannins and high acid. At this point the cranberry wins out with nuances of mint. The finish is bone dry and teeming with acid. This is a sturdy specimen worthy of time in the cellar. It's just a baby and it's kinda cranky so let it mellow. Looking forward this will surely be worth the wait. DAY 2: Left half the bottle in my decanter for 24 hours. This really opens up on the palate with toast, graphite, black, red and blue berries. excellent!

On the nose - cherry, strawverry, straw and anise. Great tannins and acidity and as well balanced as I remember from the last time I tasted this wine. Still young, but a beautiful wine hiding away, just waiting for some special event years down the road.
Opened at cellar temp. Poured off half for Day 2. Left to aerate and warm up for ~2 hours. Aromatics immediately leap from the glass. Ripe cranberries and rose petals are upfront with some subtle vanilla and wood hiding in the background. In the mouth there is an initial burst of juicy, red fruits but then there is a massive wave of tannins that coats the mouth. Despite the tannins, this is a medium bodied wine with an elegant feel in the mouth. The tannins persist through the juicy and long lasting finish

I really wanted to love this bottle and had such high hopes for a kick butt bottle of Barolo for only $40, but it just didn't deliver. Full disclosure, I only decated for 45 minutes, so maybe more aeration would have made a difference
Dinner with GaryV and Friends (Mado, chicago IL): nose: extremely floral nose that adds a real feminine touch as well as tones of perfumes, red cherries, strawberries, and bits of roasted herbs. Very pretty and elegant, though holding back a bit
taste: chewy tannins along with medium/high acidity and elegant tones of strawberries, tar, red cherries, red florals, and a lot of roasted herbs. Very pretty on the palate, but its very young as well
overall: Certainly in need of time. This can be a real beautiful wine when it matures as there is a lot of nuance and elegance to it that really draws you in. This is not a wine that will blow you away, but instead will lure you in

Dinner in Chicago (w/ GV); 2/18/2010-2/19/2010 (Mado, Wicker Park, Chicago, Illinois): Quite simply a superstar barolo. Dark cherry, leather, dried tobacco with a very tannic back end. Despite the tannis on this wine, there is no doubt that it will age effortlessly and can (and probably will) mature into an absolutely stunning bottle of nebbiolo. Well done.

If I have to rate it now, it would be 89 with potential to be 91+ in a few years. Extremely tight, pretty acidic. Popped he bootle for 4 hours then poured. Opened this one up to re-new imy interest in italian wine (barolo). Definitely need a few years to evolve. A bit disappointed as this wine is not ready to dink until at least 3-5 years. Lots of potential but the today I did not enjoy it very much. Show have open s 2005 cab instead and save this one.

Consumed over four days, improved each day. Were I a reader of this note, I wouldn't open this unless you wanted to conduct a similar science experiment.
Dark ruby, clear, you can see your fingers through the glass (as you should!). First day almost no nose. Day two dark cherries and licorice. Day 3 a strong tea-element comes out. Day 4 just slight oxidation, smells like a nice young nebb should.
Medium to full bodied. Tannic and tight. Honestly the only thing out of balance are the tannins. Medium finish. As enjoyable as a young Barolo could be.
This wine is too young for me to properly appreciate. But it was fun. I'd bet on 90+ in five or ten years.

Enjouyed a bottle of this at a steak restaurant, had them decant when we arrived and when we started drinking, it had opened up amazingly in the intervening 45 minutes. Longer would have been better, as always w/ a Barolo. The nose was very intense Barolo-nuanced and the flavor very deep and rich for a Barolo. Amazingly, at 5 years, this was drinking beautifully, even though it has a long life before it. Curiously, the color was a dark purple, almost like a Cab -- it had none of the light, orange-tinged color typical of a Barolo. We speculated about what could have been responsible for that all night ....

I found the nose to be floral, some in the group said anise, others said cedar. The nose did change significantly during the tasting. This Barolo is approachable and easy to drink, although the moderate tannins will soften out over time. This was an exciting wine to taste, as the nose and mouth-feel changed throughout. I need more of this in 2010.

(Friends Christmas Party and Barolo night). Rose red and rich. Cherry, rose petals, licorice and sandal wood. Long in the mouth and I really like the racing, velvety tannins. Classy and still generous. Better than the '04 and a true sign of the vintage is all there. A little bottle age will help soften the palate a decent amount more, however, you could have this now with a proper decant. A Barolo that could last for a while. Plush. Drink 2012 - .

This is drinking suprising well young. I had it at a new hip restaurant in Tribeca where the aspiring actors/ wait staff and bartenders had trouble fielding basic wine questions (in spite of a great, affordable list). This will grow and evolve for years, but has all the pieces; good grip, fresh herbs on the nose, orange peel, and a good woody quality.

14% alc...last night, when the bottle was first opened it was tight as a drum straight out of the bottle, giving up more on the nose than the palate, but shutdown tannins...tonight is a different story, 24 hours later, in the cooler the entire time after the first 2 glasses last night...beautiful color, dark maroon, a touch of bricking at the edge as expected...the nose is an interesting blend of petrol and dark red fruits...full-bodied, still very texture driven with tannin and acidity, dried fruits, leather, soy, lush fruit on entry then the dusty and firm tannins come into play...I'm going back for a couple more, but to let them rest and see if they come into "beauty"! Congrats to Dalla Terra on the coup.

En god Barolo, som känns tillgänglig redan nu, även om det finns en hel del syra i vinet.

A classic Barolo, and an outstanding value, as compared to the much higher priced Vietti Cru Barolo's.
This Barolo can go toe-to-toe with Barolo's 2-3x the price. Vietti has always been a consistent producer of Barolo.
I have tasted every vintage of Castiglione from 2003-2009, and the 2005 vintage is my favorite at this time.

This really opens up on the palate with toast, graphite, black, red and blue berries. excellent!

This Barolo is approachable and easy to drink, although the moderate tannins will soften out over time. This was an exciting wine to taste, as the nose and mouth-feel changed throughout. I need more of this in 2010.
