Barolo: Nebbiolo. Aged for one year in concrete vats and five years in medium-big Slavonian oak barrels. 13,5 % alcohol.
Brick red color.
Fascinating and changing aromas of red fruit, strawberries, blood, meat, brett, tobacco, nutmeg and vanilla. Powerful flavors of red fruit, licorice and tobacco.
Dry. Medium body. High acidity. Chewy tannins. Very good balance. Very good structure. Complex. Elegant.
Long finish with red fruit and heat
Starts off very shy and disappointing but after a few hours of air it opens up and turns out to be a remarkable wine. The nose is more fascinating than the mouth. Can probably survive for another 39 years. Frankly I think it needs to mature more to reach its peak. 95/100

Dinner at Greenwood (Greenwood, Highland Park, IL): Nose: The nose was perfumed and beautifully balanced from the get-go with red cherries, raspberries, dried rose petals, roasted herbs, licorice, ashen notes, dried red fruits, black truffles, earth tones, violets, and tobacco.
Taste: The feel was Medium/full bodied with well integrated, high acidity and silky, high tannins. The tannins are a smidge drying while the feel is pure silk and balanced with red cherries, raspberries, dried rose petals, roasted herbs, licorice, black truffles, violets, and tobacco notes.
Overall: This had an original capsule and it was gorgeous. It is possibly just slightly past peak and working down but it is a real joy to drink.

Thanksgiving week in Piemonte; 11/22/2019-11/30/2019 (Milan, Barolo, Alba, Barbaresco): At the Borgogno tasting room from Coravin pour. My favorite of the tasting line up. This was all about the tertiary flavors now, mature fruit, leather and earth - quite pretty and light and compelling. Obviously the provenance here is perfect so not sure you would find a bottle on the secondary market in this kind of shape but it was very nice and I would be happy to drink again.

Piedmont II - better and learnings; 11/23/2019-11/29/2019 (Barolo, Alba, others): Funnily enough they must have a lot of it since it's still on the by the glass pour. It's all young and fresh. Dried herbs. A certain vibrancy. Some dark fruit. It just rocked all of the others in the flight but to be fair it had the benefit of age and talent. Some of the younger ones will get here and they were more reasonably priced (the '12 or maybe the '14 Liste or Fossati).

Here we go atruffling... I know the tasting note before wasn't sure about these releases. It does seem like there's a lot of the 82 Borgogno out and about these days (it was on a bunch of wine lists we saw). Still, this wine clearly has had some age on it. There's a lot more leather and secondary notes. The fruit is there and still a bit muted. More potpourri. It feels like a more complete wine. Very enjoyable.

Decanted at 4:30pm and drunk through about 9pm. At first it looked quite brickish and smelled very raisiny. After about 15 minutes in the glass with some swirled air it improved markedly. Although not as good as the one we had 4 years ago, this was still special. Great with a ribeye steak. After enough air the bouquet was earthy, with mushroom and fennel, cherry and rose petals. Tannins fully resolved. Velvety smooth on the tongue with just a touch of lively acid remaining. Lots of cherry, licorice and truffle on the palate.

Barolo from Traditional Producers (Portland, OR): Plenty of fruit shows on the nose, composed of apricots, raspberries, and dark cherries. This is supported by savory scents of seared beef. Dusty character shows quickly on the palate. Shortly, cranberry flavors with good acidity appear, accompanied by some rose flavors. Later good cherry flavors blend with tobacco. A bit of chocolate is evident on the finish. The fruit, savory elements, and structure are all showing great integration at this point.

The goal: Traditionally produced profound Barolo in classic vintages (My House (Portland, OR)): Poured blind. The aromas are softly fruited and while this does have some notes of its implied age it was primarily the fruit noted. Soft and elegant palate entry, offering tart puckering fruit and soft acid. Surprisingly ripe fruit here too. Puckering acidity dial in on the tart, softer mellowed finish. Pretty nice.

Pristine bottle, nicely developed nose with dried forest fruit, tar, earthines, dried flowers, baking spice and a tiny touch of nail polish. Palate the fruit is almost gone and there is only the dried part of the wine left cloves, tar, leather, cinnamon and some dried flowers. Tannins are grainy and well integrated, the finish is ok but not very long. A good wine but not one to remember, probably as good as it gets.

Tasted at the winery as part of a vertical of their reserve Barolos ranging from 2006 to 1967. This was our favorite of the tasting. It is still quite fruity with the classic rust edges around the glass, acid and tannins have held up. The flavors have wonderfully integrated and mellowed together.

Saturday Afternoon at Domaine - featuring Nebbiolo (Domaine Wine Storage - Chicago, IL): Seemed to be a pretty nice barolo to me. The nose was rustic and edgy with good, airy floral notes, some light earthy notes, and a hair of smoke and berries in the background. Love the mouthfeel of older barolos...so light and airy with lots of intensity and this fit the bill.

Borgogno dinner (Bosk at the ShangriLa Hotel, Toronto): Muted nose. Lots of fresh cherry and strawberry, some cedar, plenty of bright acidity, saline minerality and grippy, somewhat granular tannins. Mouth puckering. A 32-year-old beast. My rank #4.

Year 2 - Super Tasting 1 of 6 - Dave does Barolo (Dave's House - Kitchener, ON): This was initially very reduced, wreaking of burning rubber. This lessened with air but was still there. Nose of slightly candied red fruit, contrete dust and sweaty saliene. Palate is still quite structured with massively mouth puckering tannin and fierce acid. A bit of a tough wine to enjoy, but I suppose a very traditional expression.

Year 2; Tasting 1 of 5; Dave does Barolo (1955-1999) (Dave's House): Library release. Popped and poured. The darkest in the flight, showing a deep ruby red in the glass, with a light brick. On the nose, red fruit, sweat, baking spice, mushroom, earth, undergrowth, a touch of mint, some mild rubber, brown sugar and celery. On the palate, still showing quite a bit of structure, with moderate tannin and medium plus acidity. Finish is not particularly lengthy, with a simplistic profile of tart red cherry, plum, earth and spice. More of a pleasure to smell than to drink. I don't see time doing this any favours.

Very fine aromas of plums, autumn leaves, earth, soy and brown butter. The palate is initially seamless, soft and limpid but eventually yields to a joyless bitter and dry tannic experience. This is quite a confusing wine. While the nose is pretty, youthful and fresh, the bitterness stops you hard in your tracks. This is probably over the hill.

Barolo: molto timido e restio a concedersi. Parrebbe ancora chiuso!

Little to no bricking visible. Quite youthful looking. Medium bodied garnet. Nose strong on chocolate, truffle and dried dark fruit. Nose kept changing over 4+ hours. Definitely better at the last, so it probably needed more time to breathe. Toward the end of the bottle we got a strong smoked salmon/lox scent but the palate ended with strong dark fruit, plum and raisin. Great wine but be patient with it.

Dan turns 30, We drink 82s (Keens Steakhouse): Original release. Double-decanted a few hours before drinking. An incredible, powerful, complex nose, best nose of the night, with meat and iron and fur and earth and black cherry fruit and some other things going on that i didn't specifically note. Unfortunately the palate is a complete letdown: it's tart and tannic and drying and while there's still fruit there, it's totally unbalanced by the acid/tannin. If only it had tasted like it smelled. 97 pt nose, 87 pt palate.

Decanted for forty five minutes +/- and poured with our entrées. Pale crimson color with some bricking. Notes of raisin, roasted red currants and licorice with meaty undertones. The palate is balanced and nicely integrated and features flavors of cherry, saddle leather, dried fruit and game.

Stream of thought: the musty notes blew off immediately after opening. Judging by the quality of the cork this bottle must have been reconditioned by GB&F prior to release. The bricking and color is appropriate for the bottle age. Initial nose of old books and dust. Well resolved tannins, although there is a hint of bitterness on the front palate. Savory tastes of plum, blueberry, and maybe some prune after 20min decant. Now picking up a nose of apricots and tart pie cherry. After tasting 80's vintages of Cali Cab, this has held up with far more grace. Better at auction price than what we paid :)

Lovely aged nose with many complexities such as marsala, coffee, caramel and the like over cherry / raspberries underneath. Also, some pineapple (yes!) and musk. Continued to intensify and show greater complexity more than 2 ½ hours after decanting.
Palate was long and taut and somewhat minerally, indeed quite austere, initially, and with quite dominant acid even 1 ½ hours after breathing. Improved significantly with breathing, to become quite intense and penetrating as we finished the bottle, at which point the wine looked quite elegant. By this time, seeing more of the red, sweet, cherry / raspberry characters was a nice counterpoint to the marsala / musk / complexity and the austerity. Have drunk 8 of these in the last 2 years or so and they are pretty consistent but I will be drinking my last few soon and I wouldn't buy any more.
Supplementary note: I've drunk 2 more in 2012 and they were both clearly past their best, with fruit drying right out. More of a curio now.

Beautifully aged nose of raspberry and sour cherry fruit, vegetal character, dried flowers and stone dust. Fullbodied and fruity palate of bright and sour red fruit, green bean, blood, liquorice, stone fruits and rosehips. Sweet and juicy tannins turn to a minerally graphite aftertaste. Not hugely complex, but very much alive and kicking - especially on the palate. Paired amazingly with some rustic and hearty dishes of Piedmontese cusine in Le Case della Saracca.

Reddish- orange color with some brown around the rim. Powerful nose offering red fruit, tar and florals. Medium to full bodied wine. The complex mélange of flowers/herbs and bright fruit jumps on the mid palate straight away. High acidity and high intensity here. The layers on the palate are too many to relay back. Firm, but silky tannins dominate the back of the palate. The finish is long and complex. This one has plenty of life.

Very, very young! Spent 3-4 hours in decanter prior to being brought to a Christmas dinner (where it sat in a recorked bottle for 3 more hours prior to serving). Stiff tannins and fruit likely buried somewhere in there but not yet evident. HOLD (try again in 2020?)

I don't know if it's an issue of storage but both the 89 and 82 have been dissappointing - nice earth and finesse but no complexity whatsoever which is suprising for the age. Not very fragnant but there is a rich red currant nose. Good, long finish. Seems too fresh, without the residue typical of 26 year old wine

Dark ruby color with a purple cast; no sediment; Reconditioned bottle. This bottle was similar to my 4/22/08 note. Again bottle variation - the first two bottles were much better than the last two. I question the reconditioning process as I don't believe it was all '82 juice in this bottle - it looked and tasted like a late 90s Barolo. Like jjclips2 I would like to try the reconditioned version vs. the original release.

Dark ruby color with a purple cast; no sediment; Reconditioned bottle. This bottle seemed like 5-10 year-old rather than 25 year-old Barolo. Although the wine was good it did not seem to have much age on it. Also the color was very dark for an 82 Barolo - a deep ruby rather than garnet you might expect with some browning. There has been bottle variation over the three bottles we've opened. Good but not worth the $$$.

It's very interesting to see other responses on this bottling, particularly with the range of opinions. Tasted via reconditioned bottle. To me, this is absolutely youthful. The intensity on this 25 year old wine is amazing. Big, bold tannins up front, with smokey tobacco leaf, dust, freshly ground cinnamon, and sour cherries. Had a sip or two about every 20 minutes over 4 hours and watched it evolve like molasses. Therefore wouldn't taste again for at least 5 years, and fortunately manage a cellar to where I can set a bottle or two aside to witness this evolution. Sidenote: Not too sure on other's viewpoints about reconditioned bottling, but I think it takes away from the quality. Would like to try a reconditioned and an original side by side.

Hawks's 40th: Opened with dark raspberry and cherry, earth, grilled red meat, tobacco and lifted violet aromatics. After some time in the glass it took on an intriguing grassy and oolong tea aroma profile. First impression is that of the tannins still being prominent and while these remained in play throughout, they became much less obvious when consumed with food. Great texture and layered, persistent flavour to the palate. In great shape for the age, and really lovely to drink now, I think it may be at its peak, but it will still be drinking very well over the next 5 years.

Paul Pazdan Off-Line (34th Street Cafe (Austin, TX)): Lovely wine that was arguably opened 10-20 years too early. Another reconditioned bottle from the winery (and all that that entails...). It had a lovely floral nose and tobacco flavors with a long, aromatic finish. Definitely aged Barolo but presented much younger than expected for this vintage. If you are purchasing these - black foils mean reconditioned at the winery while red foils are the original bottles.

Reconditioned bottle; Light clear garnet with some browning around the rim; Fine aged Barolo with a bit of funk to start out with. Medium-bodium and balanced. Absolutely delicious Barolo consumed this afternoon over lunch at Chez Panisse with friends. No sediment was evident on the side of the bottle. The nose was delicious with wet tea leaves, a silky mouth feel and a good long finish with a firm tannic grip on the back end. On the palate this was still young, with a good concentration of silky cherry fruit, rose petals, and a touch of spice. I would love to come back to this in 10 years. Well priced on the wine list and worth every penny

Nose is a touch reduced but shows dried flowers, sweat, sewer, saline, and mushroom.
The palate shows cherry, brown sugar, soy, tea and forrest floor.
The finish is medium and a bit tired.
Drink up

Very fine aromas of plums, autumn leaves, earth, soy and brown butter. The palate is initially seamless, soft and limpid but eventually yields to a joyless bitter and dry tannic experience. This is quite a confusing wine. While the nose is pretty, youthful and fresh, the bitterness stops you hard in your tracks. This is probably over the hill.

Second Annual Butcher&Larder dinner (Butcher&Larder, Chicago IL): nose: pretty and fragrant nose filled with tones of red fruits, tar, cherries, roses, berries and a touch of floral tones as well. Nice depth with a real sense of refinement to it.
taste: medium bodied with good tannins still persisting. There is good medium+ acidity to this as well along with lovely tones of red fruits, tar, cherries, berries and floral tones.
overall: this was a pop n pour and definitely used some air to get going. An extremely pretty barolo and has a lot of grace to it. This was from a library release.
