Lovely pencil lead nose, a hint of heather, of spice. Palate is in great balance, medium fine tannins, middle weight and lovely structure. This is just a little better than it should be. Very welcome after a tough day and a rainy commute.

Almost 2 years since my last try and overall bottle no 12 in fairly regular intervals since arrivage. Pnp and shows beautifully from pulling the cork. Still a dark garnet in the glass with a very thin translucent rim. Deep dark fruit, good freshness, the oak is refined but still a bit too prominent for my preference, some animal notes. Good medium + weight and concentration on the palate, very typical Pauillac, medium tannins providing good support. Short to medium finish. Excellent showing of this 09, would give it another 1-2 years to integrate further.

I did not read tasting notes in advance on purpose, but I should have - this definitely needed more time to open than I expected (but should have known better). We decanted, but it continued to improve over a couple of hours, served with beef bourguignon. Garnet color starting to show age, graphite, herbaceous notes, cassis, very mild acidity, fading fruit, and medium-short finish. It was very good, but I don't think it will get better.

Two bottles with Good Friday lamb - a lovely combination. Typically dark Pauillac and on the nose classic left bank graphite, cedar and a hint of cassis. On the palate drank well with the lamb but perhaps slightly light and short on the finish. I feel this is on its plateau and may have many years yet but will it improve? Certainly it needs food. Decanted for 30 minutes, a little sediment but nothing serious. For me it was open fairly quickly yet held up in the glass for several hours. Overall very enjoyable and once again proof of the strength of the vintage and the Chateau.
Hawksmoor Dinner with out of town visitors (Hawksmoor Air Street): This is lovely. Classic left bank claret - cigar box and pencil lead nose, great balance on the palate but with just enough zip and energy to keep one engaged. Just a little bit more engaging and fun that you might expect a Batailley to be - a step above the 2010 we drank a few months ago.

Very deep colour. Classic Pauillac on the nose. On the palate it still has oodles of fruit. Good length and concentration. However, I found it a bit too hot and rather sweet; in fact I preferred the Batailley 2014 tasted a few days later, which was better balanced and more classic claret.
Best to leave the 2009 a few more years, I think.

Delicious blackcurrant seasoned with spice, cedar and graphite, it was savoury and dry yet the sweetness of the fruit eventually shone through. The refined tannins quickly subsided to yield a superb mocha finish. Finely structured and balanced, this was lean, powerful and muscular with a superb finish. An archetypal Pauillac, it just had everything you could wish for. CHP 94 pts

Cassis, blackberry, some underripe strawberry. Some tertiary earthiness and touch of graphite. Light on the palate despite the concentration of flavour. Nice complexity. Will keep maturing too.

The wine seemed very tight upon opening, so I decided to aerate the wine in a decanter for three hours in the morning and poured the wine over dinner. The early decanting helped a little, the wine had opened up and the tannin had softened by dinner time. Medium to dark ruby colour, some sediment. Black currant, blackberry, blueberry, cherry, cedar, leather, light tobacco, light chocolate, graphite, intense spice, and vanilla, with medium-level acidity, firm tannin, and very good length. Good concentration on the attack, a little thinner in the middle and on the end, but it might flesh out with a few more years. The wine is still firm, and the tannin could use some more time to soften. I would drink from 2026. 90(+)(?)
My only bdx this eve, chateau Batailley 2009. A: medium garnet red, some brick change at the rim N: classic paulliac bouquet with floral bramble, cassis, log burner smoke, vanilla and toast. P: initally fruit forward but after a couple hours decanting the cedary vanilla and mushroom notes started to show. Some leather, dryness, firm integrated tannins, great mouth feel, medium finish and, for me, a firm 92 points. Paired with pork Sunday roast.

Still primary, I do wish that critics would stop giving unrealistic drinking windows. Admittedly, it is at the very beginning of its drinking window, but it needs at least another 18 months for the grippy tannin dominating the wine to retreat. I have to say that beneath the tannin potentionally there is an excellent wine that should be rating in the mid 90s in a couple of years. If you like your wines primary, it is ready, but otherwise give it another year or two.

A dark colour and a concentrated wine, with slightly burnt fruit which is attractive now but is still fairly youthful. Should continue to develop well.

Brickish red. No decant. Floral and fruity, on the verge of being perfumed. Fully softened tannins without grip. Acidity well integrated. Good but not overwhelming.

A couple of years since my last bottle. Some tertiary development on the nose, but not quite there. Tannins are will integrated now. Not bad but... Day 2, gone backwards. Blocky and a bit reticent. Day 3, suave, open, mineral, expressive. Finally got there.

Drunk alongside the 2009 Haut Batailley. 375 of Batailley decanted. Half the Haut Batailley put to oneside for another day. To look at the Batailley is slightly more mature. On the nose the B is richer with tobacco, cedar and blackcurrant fruit. The HB far simpler with cedar and dark fruit. In the mouth the Batailley is richer and riper, but not over the top. The HB is a little lighter and simpler, but still a lovely wine. B ****+, HB ****. Ruth just loved the Batailley, “reminds me of old Sunday afternoons."

Solid red rim, no signs of aging. Powerful and nowhere near its peak yet. A lovely wine already but this will definitely get better. I won’t open another bottle for 2 years. This will be special when it eventually unfurls. Update: after 4 hours in a decanter after opening and half the wine returned to the bottle after drinking, the next day this had softened beautifully and was quite remarkable.
Classic foursquare Pauillac, that’s not flashy, almost understated. Savoury and meaty with black fruits and a lick of cedar there was spice and pleasing soft tannins. It developed and built flavour and intensity without ever going over the top right through to a satisfying dry lingering finish. So digestible, it slipped down all too easily. 92 pts

Coravin fun - Bordeaux (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. Aromas of blackberry over blackcurrant, mint, baking spice, biscuit, earthy. Juicy medium plus intensity acidity, ripe black fruits; currants; berries; a little plum, tannins are slightly grainy textured and drying, a little alcohol warmth intrudes on the medium plus length finish joined by cedary notes. Hmm.

Concentrated and powerful nose with pencil shavings, dark fruit (cherry), liquorice, smoke and leather notes. A medium-bodied wine that is juicy with the alcohol and acidity nicely balanced. Tannins are medium-high and still noticeable. Long and persistent finish. This is very good and ready but still early. I will wait a bit before opening the next bottle.

Quite a fruity nose of blackcurrants and dark raspberries, but with some cigar box and graphite, then a full-bodied mouthful of blackberry and violet at first, followed by oodles of cooling blackcurrant and a long, if not especially complex finish. This was recommended by Jane Anson and I can see why - it’s a really enjoyable Pauillac, well-rounded and satisfying, not overripe in the least, no more so than any 2000. It’ll be better in another three or four years but it’s already fun with a decant and well worth seeking out. JA gave this 96 points, which I think is a little generous, but it’s certainly worth 93 for me.

Great Pauillac which is drinking very well now. Classic cassis and cedar but lots of green tones which is somewhat surprising due to the dominance of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend.

Right Bank vs Left Bank Bordeaux Through the Decades (Charlotte, NC): (Served Blind) Decanted 24 hours in advance for 30 minutes before back in the bottle and recorked, placed in the refrigerator and removed 2 hours prior to serving. On the nose rich aromas of dark fruits sang brightly. Smooth mouthfeel and tasty wine of cassis and blackberry if a bit simple. THe bright flavors clearly displayed its more youthful profile, A fine wine but lacking finesse and complexity found in the other wines. This was a blind to test the aging potential of micro-oxing wines. While the wine drank well, it was clearly as much as 10 years younger than the other wines in the flight.

Another beautiful bottle of this big time overachiever in 2009. Perfumed, layered and complex, with notes of black cherries, some cassis, elderberries, barnyard/horsesaddle, also some crushed violets, cedar wood, cigar, also just a touch of greenish bell pepper. It‘s medium-full bodied, has excellent mid-palate persistence, it has medium+ tannin that has melted away a little bit since my last bottle, and medium+ acidity adding nice freshness. Very good length. A very complete, beautifully classic Pauillac that is not breaking the bank. Lovely. (94+)
Showing much better than it did just a few years ago, the wine has added a lot of weight and character. Now you find loads of cassis, black currants, leafy herbs, tobacco, and pepper nuances. Rich and with ample depth, the wine looks like it has a solid future. Drink from 2025-2045.

Appearance: Bright and clear, the wine is of medium ruby colour, with fading rims and legs. Nose: Clean, with medium (+) intensity aromas of black fruit of blackberry and dark plum, red fruit of cherries, herbaceous notes of bell pepper, animal notes of leather, maturity notes of tobacco and savoury, sweet spice of bay leaves, pungent spice of liquorice. The wine is developing. Palate: Dry with medium acidity, the wine has medium tannin of ripe and silky texture, medium in alcohol and medium body, with medium (+) intensity flavours of black fruit of blackberry and dark cherries, sweet spice of clove, kernel notes of coffee, maturity notes of tobacco. The wine has a medium (+) finish. Conclusion: Very good quality Pauillac, after opening for 3 hours the aromas is very appealing, with good intensity and showing lots of complexity, and showing clear indication on the presence of Cabernet Franc in the blend. On the palate the wine is elegant, juicy and well-structured, with nice tannin but not excessively harsh, showing good concentration in flavours and a fairly long finish. It is ready to drink now but can further develop for another 5-7 years.

This was bottle no 11 since arrivage in fairy regular intervals. Poured into decanter and drank over 2h. The 09 Batailley has been a beautiful Pauillac at almost any stage of its evolution (the exception being some time in 2014/2014 where the oak was overwhelming). Interestingly the wine seems to gaining a bit of weight after appearing barely medium bodied 12-24 months ago. I love the fact that this has only 13% alcohol in the often (too) rich and exuberant 2009 Bordeaux vintage. Glad I have another 2 cases left. Drink anytime over the next 20 years.

Coravin fun - Batailley (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. Ripe brambles, blackcurrant, alcohol warmth and a slight herbaceous underpin. Fruit tea, sweet spcie, biscuit, the fruit grows with time in the glass and is joined by a little plum. Juicy, savoury, again ripe black fruits but backed by cedar, a little biscuit, tannins are drying, persistent, talc textured, long. Alcohol warmth is, for me, slightly intrusive on the finish but, other than this, I find it rather nice.

7th bottle in fairly regular intervals from a case bought on release. After an initial fairly oaky phase, this wine never closed down, and has been drinking well since at least my bottle in 2014. Continues as a medium bodied and very nicely balanced typical Pauillac. Does not have the depth and layered fruit of the best wines but a very pretty Pauilac that provides great pleasure with or without food. Was a great value at around $40 en primeur as well. Drink at leisure over the next 20 years.

Decanted for 90 minutes. Deep intensity of colour, ruby/currant. Nose: see previous note. Also some blueberry, hint of lavender, bay leaf and graphite. Nicely perfumed.
Palate: Medium to full bodied. Acidity is still good. Moderate alcohol. Tannins have softened. For the first couple of glasses it lacked a bit of mouth weight and finished short, but with airing it came good. A very good wine.

Decanted about 30 minutes before dinner; 2 hours or maybe more would have been better. Nose and palate muted, 2-5 years more cellar time would improve this a lot. Still a very pleasant mouthfeel, medium plus body and good balance make this enjoyable to drink now, even if the experience will be better in a few years.

Tight, with primary notes upon opening. Gave 4+ hours in the decanter before taking this note. Classic Pauillac nose, showing nice fruit, pencil shavings, and subtle white pepper. The palate has somewhat firm tannins, with a nice balance of fruit and graphite. Nice, lingering finish. This is very approachable now with air, but 5+ years will likely do wonders for it. A nice Bordeaux, with potential for a couple more points.

drunk alongside the 2010, this was much the better of the two at the moment and a revelation - the 2009's have an excellent reputation and on the evidence of this wine, it is richly deserved - drinking beautifully now, sensational and without a doubt the best Chateau Batailley I have tasted

What has changed since last time? Me, or the wine (or is it just variability). My main concern last time was it was a bit monolithic, chunky. Certainly not the case here. Colour: gorgeous deep ruby. Classic nose of blackcurrant and pencil shavings. Palate is rich, yet lithe. The texture is fine, and the finish is long and mineralic. Still a little primary, but beautiful textural complexity here. 93/94.
Good deep colour. Textbook Pauillac nose. On the palate it shows good concentration and fruit, with the tannins nicely softened, but it has further to go in terms of development. Although it's already drinking very nicely if you're looking for a fairly vigorous claret, I think it's a bit of a waste drinking it at this stage. Give it more time to develop further complexity.

Three years on from our last tasting and this is certainly a powerhouse but also complex wine. The nose is classic; graphite lead pencil, tobacco, cedar and dark dark fruit. No or little primary fruit on the palate but plenty of interest. Just a little heat in the mouth and a good length on the finish.
Can't believe my last bottle was only 3 months ago. Decanted maybe 45 mins before drinking, some cassis but much more tertiary than last taste. Mature claret and anchovy crusted rump of lamb. Heavenly.

This is quite full, with rich, warm fruit, blackcurrant and plum, and good length. Less traditional claret character than I would like, perhaps the result of a hot vintage. Good now, but will keep and may develop further.

Tomahawk steak last night with chips called for something classic and reliable and this Ch. Batailley 2009 was perfect. Two hour decant. Cassis on the nose with a touch of cedar. Dark garnet. Nose: shows the classic blackcurrant and cedar/cigar box notes of Pauillac, but I get leather and some earthiness and a hint of vanilla too.
Palate: full to medium bodied, the austerity in this wine is just starting to turn. The tannins have softened just enough. It finishes just a little bit short for me, but is still a very good wine. Decanted two hours before drinking, it paired well with a roast beef dinner.
Glad I've got three more left and I'm looking forward to see how they develop in coming years.

From Coravin. Polished oak, a little cream, butter, toast, blackcurrant tends to cassis, a little chocolate, cedar, clove, smells ripe but also bright. Juicy, still quite reticent on the palate, plenty of dense and slightly brooding black fruit married to equally dense tannins that dry the mid palate, aniseed note on the finish as well as alcohol warmth. Hmm. Time to settle I think.

Medium purple color, slightly lightening up towards the rim. After 2 hours of decanting this shows a beautiful perfume of ripe dark cherries, black currant/cassis, also some elderberries, crushed violets, some horsesaddle, cigar, smoke, also some cedarwood and graphite, as well as a touch of green bell pepper on the aftertaste. It‘s medium-full bodied, with still medium-high tannin that is still present, there is some medium+ acidity adding freshness too. Good length. This is a really nice, pretty complex and classic and still has the stuffing to go another 10 - 15 years.

PnP from .375. This is not as oaky as it was when young which is good, though you still get a toasty imprint to the finish - but before that nice dark fruit, earth, tobacco with still a bit of tannins. This is toasty but not necessarily a crowd pleaser and for me could do with more time, particularly from 750. I tested this as I had heard of some 2009s ageing too rapidly, but based on this bottle no worry at all with this one.

Bordeaux 2009 Grand Cru / 10-years on / tasted blind: Toasty nose with Maggy, more muted than the rest of the flight. A bit too oaky but then also with nice, ripe dark and red fruit. Good but clearly the weakest in this flight.
Leafy green aromas, forest floor, wet earth, campfire and earthy red fruits hit your glass easily. On the palate, the wine is soft, medium bodied, and spicy, with an earthy red pit fruit finish. This is in its prime time drinking window, so enjoy this classic Pauillac over the next decade or two with ease.

Four years since my last bottle and this has evolved very nicely. Poured into decanter and drank over 2h or so. Surprisingly ready to drink, oak and toast have integrated. Plenty of dark and blue fruit initially but paired with nice acidity, not overdone/overripe like some other 09s, with more air the fruit retreats just a bit but the fine to medium tannins do not become intrusive. Not the wine Parker thought to see en primeur but a very nice Pauillac nevertheless and looking at today’s prices a great deal back then too. Time to start drinking those bottles in my eyes, would do Pnp and without decant, and just drink slowly over an evening to enjoy the evolution.

No specific notes. This was excellent, with sweet dark berry fruit and a long finish, with strong mineral acidity balancing the fruit. This was always a really solid wine but two years ago this closed down a bit. I just tried one of my remaining bottles and it is again open and showing what modern left bank Bordeaux has to offer. Everything in place, will get better from here if you like it more mature but I think this mid stage of maturation is just great for this level and style of Bordeaux so will be having my resining bottles over the next 2-3 years although it will probably offer good drinking for another 5-10 years.

Final bottle from a small lot of three. Classic Pauillac nose, aromatic, open and complete; rather slender (light) on the palate for a fifth growth from Pauillac in a great vintage like 2009, you might call it elegant for my palate it lacks power and concentration; good resonance and length, A lovely drink, classic style, drinking well, but the yields may have been a bit high. Good for what it is and for what I paid years ago, but at the present price levels, I would not buy this again.

Not decanted this time, and that suites the wine well. It remains fresher for longer, without much loss of expression. But like the bottle tasted some two weeks ago, this essentially is a medium-bodied, bright Pauillac, built around its crisp (74%) Cabernet-Sauvignon fruit, fresh and lively for such a warm vintage, but with a mild lack of concentration mid-palate. At peak, time in hand. Winedoctor got this absolutely right in his very polite way in October 2011, when he talked about its “understated presence” on the palate, and its “gentle structure”. Nice enough, but it has become expensive for what it is.
In transition. Sweet stewed fruits and fresh blackcurrant on the nose. Palate continues with the blackcurrant then something older, like library books comes to the fore. Plenty of acid and tannin to last.
Did not decant but was better after 3 hours.

VinoLaprisco Tasting (Restaurant De Karpendonkse Hoeve *, Eindhoven, Netherlands): Wonderfully crisp Cabernet style, floral and expressive, ripe tannins, transparent, lighter and more elegant than the Lafon but seems to lack some concentration, light and sandy mid-palate, may need more time to integrate, liquorice finish. Slightly oxidative on the nose on the second day, with a note of chocolate, but the palate remains intact, if light for a 2009.

Delicious, showing complex dark fruit and earthy Pauillac. Personally I’d drink this now while the fruit is still there but the tannins are tamed. YMMV depending on storage temperature (ours cellared at 55 F).
compared with Dauzac '09 this has more fruit. Fine tannins. Touch bitterness on a quite long finish with fruit evident. Should improve over time. Try 2020. For now score 91.

Tasted at The Wine Society's Bordeaux tasting in London. This is one of my favourite chateaux so it was great to be able to taste the '09 from an excellent vintage. It's needed time, but I think it's just starting to become a very attractive wine and will surely keep for many years. Dark ruby colour. Subtle nose, savoury and fruity. The palate shows good berry fruits with a hint of dustiness. Excellent overall. At £50, it's not cheap, but this is an excellent wine from a great vintage.

An excellent wine which still needs some time to come to terms. Initially very mellow, vanilla and subdued. With time some bacon, burned rubber and eucalyptus. Interestingly enough with time the tannins are more prominent, but very finely grained. Missing the precision of cooler vintages, but still interesting to follow over the course of an evening. Had this from a half bottle.
Dark purple. Uninspiring nose. Plenty of black fruits, cassis. Classic claret with great structure and balance. Full body. Tamed acidity and supple tannins. Long finish. Probably the best Batailley I've had.

Tasted at The Wine Society's Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon tasting, Winchester, UK. I'm familiar with this vintage of Batailley, and quite happy to taste it again. The colour is dark maroon, tending to black. Savoury nose, earthy and deep blackcurrant. I think it's fully mature now and ready for drinking. The Wine Society says (I think optimistically) that it will keep until 2035. It's so good now, I wouldn't want to risk that. Excellent.

An interesting wine rather than a great one perhaps. initially I found there to be a rather disturbing finish but after a period the wine settled down with a plummy eucalyptus finish along with the decadent unctuous mouthfeel that is clearly typical of the vintage

Mini Horizontal of 2009 Left Bank: The red fruit on the nose is now joined also by hints of darker fruit. The typical Pauillac nose with hints of damp cellar and even leather (is this showing some secondary notes already, or is it just that the companions are less evolved even though they are the same vintage maybe). On the palate it is more balanced than the Tertre, but still young with acidity and tannins still quite perky. This will likely develop very well, but if you like them young it is great now.

A great wine for Christmas 2017. Beautiful note and deep color. Consistent with the beautiful vintage of 2009. Can't wait to enjoying the remaining case or so I have of this over the next decade. Paid about $42.

Bordeaux Left Bank: The Famous Four (The Wine Society, Stevenage): 74% cabernet sauvignon, 22% merlot, 2% petit verdot, 2% cabernet franc. Deep ruby. Clean nose, medium (+) intensity aromas of cassis, blackberry, vanilla, cedar, graphite, tobacco. Developing. Dry, medium (+) acidity, medium alcohol (13%), full body, medium (+) ripe tannins, medium (+) intensity flavours, medium (+) finish. Very good quality, can be drunk now but suitable for further ageing, just into drinking window. Structure and concentration to last 20 years.

Coravin fun - Burgundy & Bordeaux (Kennards, Waterloo): From Coravin Ripe blackcurrant, slight black cherry, spice, cream, vanilla and slight cassis. Still too young but so much more approachable than the 2010, carries exceedingly long. Drink and regret with a 2-3 hour decant. Yum

Geöffnet, belüftet und dann probiert - Farbe: dunkelrot, konzentriert - Bouquet: Kirsche, Pflaume, verhaltene Frucht. Etwas verschlossen. - Geschmack: Noch kantige Tannine, aber schon trinkbar. Schöne Frucht. Hinten raus schon noch etwas grün. - Sollte noch einige Jahre lagern.

Decanted 4 hours and amazingly ready to drink. Classic Bordeaux character in the soft and full 2009 framework. Will gain nuances with age but also ready to go now.

PnP this is more or less approachable. Very complex and fragrant aromas of earth, liquorice, blackcurrants, chocolatey oak, cassis and menthol. Medium to full bodied chiselled, opulent and delineated chocolate infused black and red fruits palate. Ends longish. 13.5%. Will aerate five hours and retaste to see how it develops.

This is one of the best Bordeaux values in my celler. I bought several cases and already drunk a few of them. With a little air it is so enjoyable now. Yes it is young, and it will be different in a few years, but will it be more fun to drink? I'm not sure. Today it is soft, smooth, elegant and fruity. This is a good bottle to take to the restaurant without having to decant it for hours. And definitely a crowd pleaser.
Darklish red at the rim - the oak has been toned down on the nose, now more fruit driven. The palate is full, almost blowsy at this time, the tannins are still too evident and furry. However, this is the first bottle of this wine that I have drunk with unalloyed pleasure - it is very close to entering its drinking window with the sweet fruit coming to the fore. This wine will be really jolly good.

Tasted against the 09 Malescot, both from Coravin. Classic earthy, cedar nose, although more muted than the last bottle (which was decanted of course). On the palate very nice ripe, mainly red, fruit; smooth on attack and onwards, good balance, finish is medium length.

This wine is still a bit closed--it tasted much better on Day 2 than Day One. It has some more potential to improve, so I am going to revisit the '09 in another year or so.

from doublemagnum: decanted some hours, the 2009 vintage is somehow the successor of the 1982, but I have to admit......, not having drunk that much bottles from 1982, just a association of ideas while sipping this one......., soft but still lively tannin, primary volouptious fruit, blackberry, very little coffee from the oak, aerated a very stunning delicate wine, in its primary fruit drinking window, all my mates like this wine, so it is a crowd pleaser at the moment, will improve for one to two decade(s+), **(**), 89- 92+?

Drank with Ian, Chris and Vivek. Lovely balance, good intensity led by ample fruit that is maturing nicely. Medium length to the finish. Not hugely memorable perhaps but one of the best Batailleys for sure, everybody liked it.
Pnp. I was impressed how open and very enjoyable this already is. The tannins are soft, but need still to smoothen a bit more. I believe this wine will never shut down and will only improve over the next 5 to 10 years. This is a very good value and a crowd pleaser.

Not had this wine for 18 month and found it much less enjoyable than in 2013/2014. Decanted for about 30 min. Dark garnet. Wine is dominated by notes of toasted oak and coffee. The fruit might have pulled back a touch as fine but dense tannins appear on the mid-palate but am surprised just how strong the toast is now. Reminds me of modern Pape Clement vintages. Forget for five years and hope the fruit can absorb some of the toast..? 88+
Fra 375 ml. Denne overrasker meg svært positivt. Den er veldig enkel å drikke, balansert og harmonisk. Som mange andre viner fra 09 er drikkevinduet "åpent" hele tiden, men vinen endrer jo selvsagt karakter.
2009 Chateau Batailley showed beautifully at this early drinking stage. Notes of ripe, black fruit and pure, fine sweetness. Earth, leather, black olives and tobacco. Intriguing and exciting. Soft and round in the mouth, but still healthy structured and full of potential. Finishes long with black fruit and peppery spiciness. Distinct Pauillac and very attractive!

drank my last 1/2 bottle along with a 1/2 bottle of 2011 Saffredi, the Batailley without decant but letting develop in the glass. young cabernet on the nose, also some sort of meat and rusty aromas. fair to say however, this was a shorter wine on the palate than the Saffredi and, less fruit and clear and clean.
I just tasted this from Sampler store in London. I had a small pour in line with some more mature 86 Cos and Talbot. First time for me tasting this wine and I was immediately impressed/sold. Slightly sweet fruit and already immediately approachable, yet clearly having a Pauillac backbone allowing this to age and improve for two decades or so. A winner at in absolute terms and relative value a no brainer. Try this now and see of it is for you. It certainly is for me and I just bought a case of magnums in bond and will look to buy another case of standard size soon.
Earthy, tart red fruit with a little green pepper and a hint of coffee. After being opened for 2 hrs it took on a plummy, salty, umami finish. Medium body and finish. Approachable now with a 1 hr decant.

Birthday party, early May 2015: deep violet color; started with an opulent bouquet of cassis and black berry, plus chocolate, coffee and some smoke, over the next 30 min. the aromas somewhat faded away, the wine closed down, but then a nice comeback with cassis and plum smells; in the mouth black fruits; full body; satin-like texture; however, in between some coarse moments.
This is a wine I had/have the chance to follow on several occasions over the last years. The birthday host bought a case and regularly serves it when I'm around. The 2009 Batailley now has reached his teenage phase.
It's basic character still leans more to California than to Pauillac.

Mid red at the rim - cassis and oak on the nose. Medium bodied, a trifle muted on the palate as of yet, the fruit is still buried under the structure, but the wine has mellowed a little, soft tannins, slightly savoury; for the moment unevolved.

Beau nez sur les fruits rouge, le chocolat et le cèdre. En bouche, belle fraicheur. De la cerise, du graphite et un peu d'herbes. Beaux tannins bien enrobés avec une longueur appréciable. Se boit bien en ce moment.

Decanted for 2 hours. Medium purple color. Explosive nose of dark berries (casssis/black currant, elderberries, black cherries), sweet spices, oak, vanilla, flowers and some smoke too. On the palate there notes of black fruit again, tobacco, graphite/lead pencil and cinnamon. It's medium-full bodied with medium-high tannin that is sweet and silky, and medium-high acidity providing freshness. Great and complex finish. An incredibly beautiful Pauillac with tons of fruit but also classic flavor profile, very elegant too. I can't wait to see how this will age... (94+)
First try after 2h decant. Good compact fruit but did not give that much away. Some alcohol was noticable. The day after it had woken up and displayed classical flavours from the region and the alcohol was not there. Clearly outstanding and I look forward to follwoing this wine for the next 10-15 years.

decanted 12 hours then back in the bottle, however this (half) bottle, same case, seemed less mature than last one, cinnamon/vanilla on nose and palate similar to the first bottle, the 2009 fruit is missing, opened to early this one.

End Aug 2014: not decanted; deep violet color; plum, raisin, chocolate smells; sweet chocolate in the mouth, more like a port wine; bulky and very austere.
What's up with all the fruit and smoothiness? Guess, things like this happen during a claret's teenage years. I'm confident this wine will get back to high performance.

Pop and pour, then allowed to sit for an hour. Light green pepper and camphor on the nose; on the palate, blackberry, currants, tobacco, and a bit of green pepper, with fairly smooth tannins. Unlike the other notes, I didn't find the oak overwhelming. Very good, but will obviously improve.

Bordeaux 2009/2010 tasting at home. Double-decanted for 7 hours. Jumps out of the glass with notes of cassis/black currant, sweet flowers, oak, sweet spices (cloves, cinnamon). On the palate there are again lots of spices, tobacco, dark berries, cassis and flowers and some lead pencil. It's medium-full bodied and very elegant, with medium+ acidity and medium-high tannin that is very silky. Long finish. A very aromatic Pauillac with great complexity and tons of elegance. Love it! Bought this wine on the slow 16 hours ferry from Copenhagen to Oslo. Consumed on board. Decent nose. Sweet and smooth on entry, firm mid-palate with warmth at finish. At the moment, oaks are a bit too obvious, maybe even too much for some people. Buy more? Nah....me think Gloria 09' is better at similar price range.

Decanted for 2 hours. very earthy nose with loads of farmyard. After being open for several hours i picked up a hint of coffee. Acid and tannins are balanced. Drinking nicely already for being so young. This the 1st 2009 I have opened and look forward to other wines from the vintage. Can't wait to see where this wine is in about 5 years.

Pnp. Unlike the bottle 12 months ago this is now open for business from the first sip. Dark garnet but with a fine translucent rim. Oak and earthy notes on the notes, then dark berries and black cherries on the palate, lead pencil, and after about 90 min also some chocolate. Quite surprisingly for an 09 this is only medium (+) bodied, and demonstrates hence a surprising lightness and elegance. while being very smooth it does not show the lushness most of the 09s had when trying last year. Impressive long finish. This should be really nice once the fairly dominant oak is further integrated. 92+

Still very young but not closed down at all. Classical Paulliac nose with some cedar, coffee, cassis and blackberies. Drank out of a half bottle, this wine has lots of punch and quite a long finish. The wine still needs some time to integrate all the components. After a couple years it might merit an even higher score.

Opend 2 hours before decanting the wine for another couple of hours. Tasted the wine three times before drinking it to the lamb meal.
Amazing, you could feel the difference! Altough, after a hour in the glas it missed some of the fruit and freshness. Would reccomend that you just decant the wine couple of hours, at this stage.
The wine was very good - very classic Pauillac aroma - heavy, earthy with blackberry at the palate. The taste was powerful and quite round, probably after the decanting. Would reccomend the wine highly for the price!

Medium red at the rim, tending to black to the core - quite strong cassis on the nose of this bottle, followed up by oak. A deftly woven palate of fine oak and finer tannins, and well-judged acidity - the fruit is still under all this structure. Needs more time, but progressing very nicely.

Quite aromatic. Nose of red fruit, smoke, gravel, oak, and a touch of pencil lead that faded throughout the evening as the fruit started to put on weight.
The vintage is ripe, and this wine definitely delivers fruit, but it is soft and classy. I can only assume by looking at pro reviews out of barrel and early on that the tannins have resolved quite a bit. Perhaps I was bracing myself for the "boatloads of tannin" and that skewed my perception. Absolutely enjoyable now, although the oak needs to integrate a bit further. If you have a case, try one. Otherwise I would wait a couple of years.
On the palate the wine is silky smooth, with notes of cherry, tapenade, and a decent (not overbearing) amount of oak. The finish is rather long and the acidity/tannin balance is perfect.
On day 2 the pencil lead is gone giving way to a more powerful nose all around. The oak seemed to give way a little bit, and the wine put on a little weight. I think this Batailley will improve over the next 5-10 years. I intend to try again in a couple of years. Excellent QPR!

Xmas 2013: red purple ink; red fruits and plenty of wood-type aromas; full body; silky texture; long finish.
Had quiet a few bottles of the Batailley 2009 so far. This one belonged to the lesser favorite ones. Looks like this wine goes through its infancy years. Still convinced this will be a great Bordeaux with California style in about 10 years time.

Bordeaux 2009 vs. 2010 - Check in on 50 well known Chateaux: Medium purple. Expressive nose, black current, wood, very typical Bordeaux Blend in style but quite a lot of toasty oak on top of it. On the palate soft and round, the ripeness of 09 shines through well. Can be drunk now but I would wait since the oak needs to integrate further. 92-94
Way way better than the 2004. Bouquet was elegant, oaky, and premature but still better than many. Will doubtless improve as claimed, but would happily drink now, when I am normally a late drinker. Certainly not 2035!
Slow-oxed for 12h. Young and so a little harsh, but still quite well balanced. Terrific fruity intensity and a long, long finish. Really very nice now. Day 3; Even better now, more integrated, smoother, would give it 93 now.

This wine was probably at a half-asleep or metastable state; complex and somewhat syrupy nose with berries and cherries hidden under fall leaves and rustic metals; the palate, full-bodied and well-structured with loads of dark fruits and bitter chocolate; the finish, quite acidic, fruity, intense, and long with rather supple and sweet tannins; overall, 90+ points in this awkward phase but showing lots of potential ahead; should improve quite a bit in 8-10 years; patience will bring rewards to those who can wait.

Ordered at restaurant The Steakhouse in Lachen. Popped, poured into a decanter and consumed over 2 1/2 hours. The wine was medium purple in colour and offered a rather limited nose of black currant, apple, graphite and some chocolate. On the palate the medium-bodied wine showed black currant, red currant, blackberry, graphite, spices and chocolate, paired with medium to medium-plus acidity, ripe tannin, a good mouthfeel and remarkable length. The oak was still present on the nose and palate, but not overbearing. The wine seemed less ripe and dense than many 2009 and will probably be less long-lived than many 2009 Pauillac, but it drank well and seemed to be a crowd pleaser. I would recommend decanting for two hours. 90+

Dark black/red tending to light red at the rim - when first opened the nose was all about toasted oak, after an hour or two in the decanter there were slight notes of cassis, but still the oak prevailed. The wine is smooth and well fleshed on the palate without becoming coarse. The tannins are well behaved, even at this young age - classy, restrained - not over the top.

Quite a real deep intense dark purple colour. Nose of black currant, oak and cigar. In the mouth, WOW what a wine! I couldn't ask for anything else from this wine, still quite youthful but somewhat approachable. With dark currant fruit, wood spice, cigar, and earthy tones. Great length and finish. Complex, power and balance this wine has it all! I just feel like I've opened this 15+ years too early and cant wait to see how it's showing in a few years time.

Work Wine Tasting (Office - London): RP says this is the best Batailley he has had in many years. Compared to the other wines we had this evening, this was head and shoulders above the stable mates (98,00,03). One word... WOW. Solid dark purple in the glass, a nose of dark coffee, chocolate and red/dark fruits. The taste... the taste, lovely sweet supple tannins and gorgeous fruits. This is exciting. If age improves wine, we are in for a treat.

Birthday party early May 2013: 1-2 h prior pouring opened; black red ink; very intense cherry and cassis aromas mingled with coffee and chocolate flavors; full body; silky texture; sometimes there is the impression of too much alcohol.
New world style Cabernet Sauvignon blend. Still in its infancy this wine needs another 5-10 years to reach the first maturity level. If he can gain some claret typicality this wine could reach an excellent score.

Crimson in colour, losing its signs of youth. Rich dark fruit on the nose. Minimal toasty oak, earth and smoke. Palate reveals dark berries, still somewhat subdued, herbs cherries and a hint of plum. All wrapped in a very elegant structure. Still has a good 10+ years to go.

Poured into decanter and started drinking. Dark garnet but no purple. The first glass is rather disappointing and I start regretting the three cases I have bought: red fruit, earth, some slightly bitter notes on the palate. At 13% this is the lightest 09 Bdx I have had. Takes barely 30 minutes for the wine to open up in the decanter. Wow, what an impressive turnaround: red and dark fruit, toasted oak, earth, chocolate, coffee and plenty of lead pencil, tannins are entirely covered by the fruit. Medium + finish. Delicious now or wait a few years for the oak to integrate further. 93+

Return to San Anontio (Ducru Vertical); 2/21/2013-2/24/2013 (Monty): An odd showing. Upon opening it was very closed and I actually thought it was mildly affected by TCA. Two hours later it was open, showing heavy toast and mocha notes ontop of some polished red fruit. Fine sweet tannins typical of '09 in the background. Tough to evaluate, and I'm betting quite delicious on night 2. NR

Closed for the first two hours. I worried it might be closed for a multi-year hibernation. But after double decanting it back into the bottle at the two hour mark it opened up. Juicier and fleshier than one would expect from such a young Pauillac (and especially Batailley). Stylistically modern; and I hope this is the mark of the vintage rather than changes at Batailley. Definitely not a delicate wine. A note of smoke on the nose. A good core of fruit layered under earthy notes. It trends toward dark fruits rather than bright, red fruits. A long finish. Good depth. Expected more focus and precision. I am somewhat disappointed in the lack of lead pencil and tobacco notes which are so compelling in complex Pauillac. Perhaps this is the consequence of a modern-style vintage and youth. I hope these classic aromas and flavors will reveal themselves in time; but it is in my opinion difficult to predict how this wine will evolve through maturity. Parker’s tasting notes are accurate. Jancis’ notes get it right, too. Neal Martin’s notes do not capture this wine. Molesworth’s head-scratching notes are too low-level to give the consumer much to work with (Roasted applewood? C’mon). Paid $35 on futures.

Late Jul 2012: not decanted; dark rubin red ink; started very reductive, after 10 minutes chocolate, caramel and creme de cassis, after half an hour fully developed aromas/flavors; full body; juicy, smooth, lush texture; long finish accompanied by satin-like tannins.

Intense nose with smoke and tar - hard to place the nose as pauiilac personally. The palate is surprising with sweet rich dark fruit that makes this miles apart from the 2008 vintage. I can see why the vintage gets critical acclaim as its undoubtedly seductive. Very good QPR for a bordeaux. Based on day 2 performance i would guess ths will age well.

From a blend of 74% Caberent Sauvignon, 22% Merlot and equal parts Cabert Franc and Petit Verdot, this could be one of the best values in Pauillac from the 2009 vintage. Filled with fresh, blackberry, earth, cedar, tobacco and earth, soft tannins, round textures and a rich, delicious, earthy, ripe cassis and spice finish.

CHP 94 pts

A: medium garnet red, some brick change at the rim
N: classic paulliac bouquet with floral bramble, cassis, log burner smoke, vanilla and toast.

92 pts

Lovely. (94+)

Classic nose of blackcurrant and pencil shavings. Palate is rich, yet lithe. The texture is fine, and the finish is long and mineralic.

Drinking fine now, though I’d guess it’s best days are to come.

Excellent.

The day after it had woken up and displayed classical flavours from the region and the alcohol was not there. Clearly outstanding and I look forward to follwoing this wine for the next 10-15 years.

Love it! At the moment, oaks are a bit too obvious, maybe even too much for some people. Buy more? Nah....me think Gloria 09' is better at similar price range.
