Another delicious bottle of this wine which opened with a deep crimson robe of colour and a rich nose of blackcurrants, garnet plums, fruit cake, cedar and dark chocolate. The palate initially is rich and round with an initially deceptive glossiness that with time in the glass developed classic Paulliac austerity and line to match the layers of fruit. There's a touch of 82 about this wine suggesting that time will highlight the structure and complexity of this alongside the delicious fruit characters.

At Wine Group Dinner 203, Harveys Bistro - 2009 Left Bank. This wine opened beautifully with a deep crimson colour and forthcoming nose of blackcurrants, garnet plums, lead pencil, dark chocolate and cedar. The palate is rich and layered with plenty of complexity that becomes apparent with air and time. This exudes pure Pauillac class and balance to counterweight the vintage richness.

Pichon Baron Longueville 2009 No decant, just pop and pour. On the nose, hints of coffee, truffle, black fruit, musky notes, funk and meat. On the palate, lots of black fruit and blackberry, hints of meat and dark chocolate, some licorice on the back palate, wood, quite a bit of spice. The finish is medium. A powerful play. 94/100

An hour was way too short to decant this before drinking but there’s still treated us to a beautiful and classic left bank profile along with some great 2009 fruit. Either wait until 2030 for a software version or decant for 6+ hours now for a more plush one.

Quite dark and bold but showing hint of nuance. For my taste, it was far too young. Good potential but probably takes another 7-10 years to come around.

Dark purple in color. Soaring aromas of cassis and blackberries, pencil lead, graphite, bbq smoke on the nose. Palate shows a rush of sweet black fruits with good acidity, hints of pencil lead and tobacco, fine tannins and a very long finish. Classy and will probably get better from here.

Decanted. I always enjoy the wine of the Baron, and this is no exception. Could certainly use more time or a longer decant, but quite enjoyable already. Elegant.

This has evolved quite a bit but did not show as well as the last bottle. Still very elegant but lost a bit of the intensity of my last bottle. There's more upfront acidity but still balanced.

This has spiced dark fruit with hints of chocolate. It was soft on the pallette with lingering acidity. I let this bottle breathe for 10 hours without a decanter. We had the Trotanoy 2006 before and Leoville Las Cases after. Although this was very good, the Trotanoy was the clear wine of the night.

Should have given more time to open but did not have that luxury. Wine is well made with solid but not overpowering backbone, solid mid palate and pleasant finish. Wine was nuanced and structured but lacked a bit of depth which may have been result of a short splash decant.

Method: opened a couple of hours before I arrived; Bordeaux glass
Nose: cherry, pencil shavings
Palate: cherry; finish of herbs, light pencil shavings; dry; medium+ body; medium silky-ish tannins; medium acidity
Overall thoughts: Drank next to the 1990. I could definitely taste a lot of similarities, but preferred this wine as it was more vibrant and concentrated (while still very balanced and approachable). Great wine.

Dark and clear ruby-garnet. Nose of cranberries, pomegranate, raspberries, and a bit of ripe mulberry. Silky texture with notes of cocoa powder, raspberry, mulberries, blackberries, black tea, and a hint of smoke. A long, lovely finish featuring all of the above notes, especially the cocoa and raspberry. Exquisite.

A great red wine packed full of classy material and deep fruit. The graphite finally fights its way out and makes a statement right before the pull from the massive structure takes over for a long, long finish. This is not why you should buy Bordeaux. And furthermore, this is not when you drink this kind of wine and why it demands time and patience and at that point, a much higher price (1989, 1990). This wine definitely has the material to become a true Bordeaux, but it requires your patience.
I thank my wine enthusiast friends who always offer this, knowing I'm always curious about their reasoning and love for young wine. Oh' and I almost forgot...HOLD_____

Great bouquet of ripe, dark berries, spices, pipe tobacco, grilled peppers, undergrowth, mint. Incredibly smooth palate, feeling light, sweet berries, some spices, good amount of freshness, leading to a long finish. Very hedonistic but by no means overdone and heavy. Changes all the time. Still a bit a tannic bite on the finish, needing more time to resolve, but already a great pleasure to drink.

First bottle was noticeably Pichon Baron character on the nose, but lacked spark, life and drive on the palate. Smelt lightly oxidised to me. Second bottle, much better and wowed some guests, especially Thomas Parker MW, but mid rank for me. Mixed opinions on this one.

Consumed over 2-3 hours. Still very young and tightly wound. The structure and balance is definitely there. Very much showing Pauillac qualities of brushed earth, crushed stones and gravel, touches of chalky berry.
This was popped and poured as a back-up bottle and yet it showed amazingly well. Given how long PB usually takes to mature, this is definitely an atypical vintage giving so much pleasure now but also poised for future development. Despite its giving nature, it maintains excellent freshness with good acidity and pinpoint flavors. This is one estate that managed the heat and ripeness of the vintage perfectly. 94+

Fantastic bouquet of blackberries, crushed stone, mint, undergrowth, relatively subtle. Incredibly dense yet fresh, spicy palate, with ripe blackberries with some acidity, leading to a long finish, including some salty elements. Is very structured, fresh and classic for a 2009. Still quite young but enjoyable with plenty of upside.

Showing a bit of lightning to the color, the wine combines power, concentration, supple textures, density, complexity, and opulence. Not a typical vintage for Pichon Baron. But who cares? Typical is overrated. Sensual and showy on the palate, the wine is long, creamy, rich, and shows a real staying power on your palate and in the lingering finish. This is one of the top vintages produced by the departing Jean Rene Matignon. Drink from 2022-2055.

Special lunch party - best of Australia vs France (Ravensdale Farm): Not decanted - perhaps a mistake - but drunk over 4hrs. Dark brooding but ultra tautly structured. Black fruit - tar, sage and cedar. A bit closed and dry relative to other wines. Didn’t quite release its best. I expected more exuberance and early drink-ability from this 2009 Bordeaux.

This youngster of a wine is just about to poke its foot into very early drinking window. The fruit here is overwhelming for a Bordeaux and especially for the Pichons that I have registered in my brain, but with more time and integration, all that should meld into a wine that should drink well for 20+ years. The fruit and spice notes make this a bit young for me, but there's no doubt that this will look more attractive to me in 5 years and even more so in 15. It sports a long, dry, throbbing finish...HOLD

Medium nose. Still closed. Some notes of mint, pepper. Youthful. Black fruits. Decanted for 3 hours. Suggest to cellar longer. Medium+ acidity and high tannin.
Had a vertical flight and rating as follow:
1) 1995 - 96 point 2) 1998 - 95 point 2) 2005 - 95 point 3) 1982 - 94 point 4) 2010 - 94 point 5) 2009 - 92 point 6) 2007 - 91 point
Observation was that between 2009 and 2010. 2010 is more ready to drink as compare to 2009 which is still closed. 1995 and 1998 are in very good drinking window when primary note meets tertiary notes. 1982 wasn’t performing well despite strong vintage and a very strong neighbour Pichon Lalande.

A lot of acid-tannin energy, long aftertaste of slightly leafy tannins, but not amazing. Disappointing for the price and hard to comprehend other tasting notes are for the same wine. From a half bottle from Wine Society, brought up to room temperature over six hours then decanted for two hours. No significant tells for a corked wine. Mostly just acid and somewhat green tannins in very good tension. PS: I now think this was corked, just quite subtle on the corked taste.

Decant for 2.5 hours. Black fruits, cassis, vanilla, flora. Medium+ acidity and tannin. I believe after the decanting, the tannin becomes rounded and more approachable. 2009 have a long life ahead.

Bordeaux Night with a Wonderful Mix of Friends New and Old (A suitably spaced tasting room in Los Olivos, CA): Decanted for two hours. Very approachable, though ample room to improve with time. More Pomerol than Pauillac in many ways, no shock given the large Merlot component. Highly evocative nose of black berries and pencil lead, alongside some licorice and truffle. Tar, leather and graphite alongside the blackberry-driven fruit notes. Sweet tannins on the finish.
Another strong showing for the 09 Baron, with a couple of hours this shows a deep cassis, hugely gravelly nose and palate, rich and resonant. I think this is just getting started, with its apogee perhaps being a decade down the road. No crime in drinking this now, but it does need 90+ minutes of air.

Chateau Pichon Baron with Christian Seely (Zoom!): Over 2C warmer on average than 2010, and more rainfall, so slightly less concentration. Like a more concentrated 2015 on nose and palate. Really gorgeous. Smooth but has a core of solidity. There's tannin here but it's covered in fruit, which is a little redder than the 2010's. Chewy, fresh finish, which is frankly delicious. Great wine but overshadowed by its immediate successor's brilliance.

Very dense core again, showing a little more fade at the rim but barely; much more open and ripe fruit character, not just cassis, some red fruits. Quite intense, heady; lovely spread of intense, complex berried fruits - great tannic structure well hidden behind the fruit. Relatively high alcohol (14.5%). A little alcoholic, warm on the finish. Still coming together, should develop complexity with age - 20-30 years.

Youthful and still shedding its baby teeth, but wow its already showing rather well. Full bodied crushed black fruit loaded with smoke, spice and leather, yet without doubt reticent and hiding a lot more complexity for those with a lot more patience. Long luscious finish and while tannins do make themselves known it's so silky smooth that it ends up adding to its dense mouthfeel. Can't wait to see what it grows up to become.

Lovely bottle. Decanted, drank over two evenings. Very dark in the glass, almost no meniscus at all. Beguiling nose, with ripe (almost floral) black fruit, black tea, a hint of menthol. Needs coaxing in the mouth, as the cedar and tannins dominate, but all the flavors in the nose are there along with a classic herbal note. It is not flamboyant, but sure hits all the notes.

Smoke, tobacco, cigar box, crème de cassis, black cherry, forest leaf and truffle pop from the glass. Still dark in color, the wine offers volume, depth, precision and strong, ripe, tannins. The blackberry, dark cocoa and plums are sweet, fresh and juicy. The rich finish offers fruit, spice and lift. Still young, the tannins and fruit are so ripe, it is easy to drink today. But hold off if you can, as the wine is only going to better with another 5-10 years of aging, and will offer pleasure for another 20-30 years after that.

2009 Bordeaux 10 years in the bottle 2-day horizontal; 6/23/2019-6/24/2019 (Fribourg): Part of a grand Bordeaux 2009 tasting spanning 2 days that revealed 1) a right bank struggling with overripe fruit and overwhelming tannins, 2) wide spreak between top performers and laggards, 3) left bank, and especially Margaux, outshone the right bank cousins, 4) Top wines: Palmer, Margaux, Cheval Blanc, Vieux Chateau Certan.
Tasting note: Dark berries, smoke, oak / wood, savoury and herb. Intense and powerful fruit on the palate. Everything is in the right place and I am convinced this will age beautifully.

Bordeaux 2009 - 10 Years On - 47 Reds; 6/23/2019-6/24/2019: 2009 Bordeaux after 10 years. 48 red wines. The left bank (average rating 94.2) clearly trumps the right bank (92.6): Elegance, purity and freshness vs over-extraction, ripeness and oxidation. But there are some winners on the right bank (Cheval, Petrus, Hosanna for now, Lafleur, Trotanoy medium-term) but the highest scores were given to left bank wines (Margaux #1 overall, Palmer, Mouton, for now, Latour, St. Juliens medium-term). I guess purists will not like the loads of oak-derived aromas which in some wines are great but can make the wines a bit slutty (Cheval, Margaux, quite a lot of right banks). But there are plenty of more classically shaped wines too. Overall, the 2009s are a lot of fun with many pockets of greatness but I would be very selective on the right bank. If you like more elegant, subtle and classic wines I would focus on 2005/2010/2016. All wines tasted blind and without decanting.
TN: This was the most closed and muted Pauillac in the lineup. Quite austere and not much fun to drink. Dark candied fruit, lots of cedar but the complexity is still masked by the austere structure with not yet perfectly integrated tannins. Good freshness. Either this wasn’t a representative bottle or it would have just needed a long decant. Based on this bottle I would decant it at least for 8 hours.
Average blind score 4 tasters: 93.0 Rank: 34th out of 48 wines

Dark red fruits and cedar, oak on the nose. This wine is one of the most concentrated Pauillacs of recent vintages that I have tried, there is freshness of red fruits blueberry, blackcurrant on the palate to balance out, very enjoyable, then the tannins hit you like a lightning bolt. This wine still needs a few years for the tannins to settle, but has all the makings for a great wine in say a decade from now. Amazing!

Pichon Baron 2009 decanted for almost 2 hours prior to the start. Cherries and black fruit on the nose, nice use of wood. The pallet is smooth, velvety with notes of cedar, kirch, a nice balance with the black cherry fruits. Lovely tension and semi full bodied, sigarbox, pencil shavings this fires on all cylinders. With more time and air it opens up further and even gains length. Very good offering as you can expect from Baron, this has years to go, but seems tot offer joy on command. This has a nice future. 94+ for this moment.

Better on day two, deeper and richer fruit profile while not becoming new world. Amazing purity, really great wine but give it some time as I’m thinking day 3 could be even better. Too bad it won’t last that long...
Black cherry, cassis, crazy amounts of dry earth, mushroom, lead pencil, cigar box and black tea. Great purity with medium+ tannins still. Needs 5-10 years but still fun to try now.

There is great sweetness to the deep black fruits with wonderful notes of tobacco and spice. It has almost a meaty, savory texture to go along with incredible richness yet buffered by strong, fresh tannins. This will turn fabulously complex in time and could use 5-10 years. Super stuff and not overdone at all. 95+

2009 Blind Tasting: Showing a more cohesive whole than the last time I had this. Deep, serious, blackberry and pencil. Big, rich, robust, tannic but balanced palate. Beautiful presence on the palate. Surely the Pichon Baron? Correct.
Special International tasting group. (@ Zarzo, Eindhoven, The Netherlands): In the bouquet dark berries smoke, vanilla, some bell pepper and luxurious impressions. On the palate juicy dark berries, chocolate, good acidity, round and powerful tannin and a touch of bell pepper. Beautiful and luxurious wine. 95 – 96+

Pichon Baron Vertical: Big, ripe, luscious, swaggering nose - is it too big? Raspberry, luscious oak, cedar, very polished. Loads of glycerin on the palate; a touch hot, though. Bumptious. Charming, but seemingly specious. Lots of flesh and texture, but not with the complexity and upright posture one might want in a great vintage of PB. 92-3. I kept marking this down the longer it sat in the glass.

One Years Work, One Nights Tasting (Morrell Wine): The nose was zesty and intense with sweet lifting minerality, ripe strawberry, white pepper, and exotic florals, as it gained richness and a darker fruit profile the longer it spent in the glass. On the palate, I found soft, silky textures, backed by brisk underlying acidity, as dark, spicy red fruits saturated the senses, along with notes of cedar. The finish was long with dark fruits, saturating fine tannins and hints of balsamic spice. This wine has decades to go.

Nose: Cherry, plum, persimmon, cedar, coffee, spice and jammy berry notes. A bit of alcohol poking out and a very warm impression overall. Palate: Actually a bit loud. The acid, fruit and alcohol are all turned up very high so it kind of shouts at you a bit. "A real hammer" my notes indicate.
Compared to the 2010 the 2009 really had a big personality and felt a bit brash and disjointed. I'll take Jeff Leve's note and trust that this is headed to sleep. Worth revisiting.

Trip of a lifetime- literally. Bordeaux right/left and North/south Rhone: (Mouton, Cheval Blanc, Haut Brion, La Mission Haut Brion, Vieux Chateau Certan, Angelus, Pichon Baron, Smith Haut Lafitte, E.Guigal, M.Chapoutier, Château De Beaucastel, Stephane Montez, Jean Michael Stephan).
An amazing vertical tasting at Pichon Baron with pairings: 2015, 2014, 2011, 2010, 2009, 2005, 2003, 2002. Unfortunately unable to take notes as this was after an Amazing Mouton tasting (2012, 2009, 2005 plus two other labels) and followed by a Margaux tasting.
Anecdotal tasting comments- 2009 & 2010 were fantastic wines followed by 2015 (needs more time don’t open if have) and 2003. These four wines were knockouts with some needing more time and others hit right on stride. Based on everything we saw there, I would expect 2016 to possibly be the best vintage yet. Stocking up on this producer as there is a lot to offer at a very attractive price point.
2009 was another great wine. Sorry too many wines not enough time.

Could not emphasize enough to do a tasting and meal there if given the opportunity- homerun.

Opened up a little after 4 hours of slow ox and very approachable despite obvious youth. Crushed dark berries, slightly on the lush side, granite, hints of earth, very elegant and smooth finish albeit cut short by the tannins. Day 2: Still a little tight, but wonderfully intense and complex. The fruit was still lush but seemed to calmed down a little which I found more appealing. For me I'd rather wait a decade as it has so much potential.

Surprisingly approachable with a pop and pour, it opened up nicely with a 2 hour decant. Aroma of cassis and blackberries and upfront fruit taste. Tannins are definitely present but do not detract from the experience because of the silky texture and fruit overlay. Great mouth feel, slightly acidic aftertaste and a long finish. Not the serious and stodgy Pichon Baron I normally expect (and enjoy), but so much more fun to drink. I expect this will age well for many years. Great quality at $150 a bottle, glad i have a case. So good i'll probably buy another case and get the 2010 as well. 97+

First tasting at a vineyard in Bordeaux - Pichon Baron. Purple red color with hints of brown. Medium floral notes with hints of meat, truffles. Tasted next to the 2010 and the 1990. Warmer, more generous fruit compared to the 2010. The oak is quite present on the complex nose, also notes of spices, minerality, graphite, tobacco, smoke. Not quite as aristocratic as the 2010 on the palate - quite different in style, lots of richness, generosity. Good tannic bite, lovely acidity. Very long and intense finish. Very impressive. 94-95+
Deep garnet colour. Lifted nose displahying notes of dark cherries, dark plums, black currants, vanilla, cinnamon and clove.
It is dry in the mouth with a moderate acidity. It has firm fine-grained tannins and a hot alcohol. It is full-bodied with pronounced intensity flavours. The finish is long.
It is a very good quality wine. It shows complexity provided by oak ageing, but not enough to be considered outstanding. The finish is very persistent and it has very concentrated flavours in balance with the tannic structure and the acidity, but the alcohol is too warm to be balanced.

The clear darling of the night, this wine is an admirable reflection of this wonderful vintage. In contrast to the mighty 2010, this wine is all about up-front fruit, round and ripe tannins, and plush mouthfeel. Feels like it has more merlot than it actually contains, such is the nature of 2009, a 1982 clone (although clearly better than that vintage across the board) 09 and 10 Pichon will spark debate for decades to come, much like their older brothers the 89 and 90. Now, 09 is the wine to buy and drink, but in two decades, expect the 2010 to really shine.

Tasted next to the 2005. (As a side note: for Christian Seely the 2015 vintage is a combination of the 2005's and the 2009's characteristics.) Very dark in colour. Noticeable oak on the nose - rich and round with ripe notes of dark fruit, mocha, spices, floral notes and wood smoke. On the palate equally rich and generous, again oaky, round and polished tannins, lovely sweet fruit and very good acidity. Very very long. Not quite as well balanced as the 2005, this needs a couple of more years in bottle. 94-95+(+)

Extremely good nose of ceder, earth, ripe red fruit, leather. It's a massively scented wine which then proceeds to deliver a super-smooth taste with velvety tannins. Was expecting more grip from the tannins but the more I think about it the super-fine tannins fit incredibly well. Compare it to the feeling of small vs large bubbles in clear mineral water. Very pleasant.

Tasted next to a barrel sample of 2014. Not overly expressive on the nose, a bit closed, with notes of ripe dark fruit and savoury spices, earth, smoke. Equally tight on the palate but lots of power, round tannins, great acidity, slightly spicy, savoury. Great length. Needs time. 94-96+(+?)

Truffle, licorice, spice, incense and cedar chest aromas with only a bit of fruit poling through today. On the palate, the wine is lush, powerful, sweet and fresh, but clearly, this is starting to close down for several years. It’s obvious from the complexities in the nose, silky mouth feel and volume, this is a stunning wine. But it’s not much fun to drink now. Give this a decade or more and enjoy the fire-works.

Chateau Pichon Baron Vertical with Jean-Rene Matignon (Ripple Restaurant in DC): It is interesting to note that this retained the fat rich fruit that I found in EP. Sweet slightly jammy but pure black fruits, cassis, blueberry jam, flowers, subtle perfume, black pepper and dark spices. Excellent concentration, unctuous but silky and polished, pure jammy black fruit driven palate impression, good acidity, nicely integrated sweet tannins and lovely long sweet and clean finish. Very hedonistic wine that is enjoyable now but will improve for another twenty years.

Chateau Pichon Baron vertical 1989-2010 (Ripple Restaurant in Washington D.C.): This wine is like a more youthful 1990, but with lower yields and higher tannins. With pure and ripe red and black fruit aromatics and flavors, almost as if still a barrel sample. Full bodied, with a smooth, yet nuanced texture, and high and very ripe tannin lending excellent structure. The wine is spherical in its balance without being glossy. A gorgeous vintage in the making. Open a bottle in five years. A blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot.

Bordeaux 2009 vs. 2010 - Check in on 50 well known Chateaux: Very dark purple. Muted nose, opening up after 1h. Aromas of dark fruit with pine tree, cassis and a hint of violets and toast. On the palate dense, soft and round but aromatically very primary. This will be a great, succulent Pichon Baron but my guess is that it will be eclipsed by the 2010 for greater aromatic depth and precision. A very strong showing. The tasting group found the Pichon Baron difficult to assess due to the closed nature of the CabSav led Pauillac versus the Merlots at this stage. (Group Score 95.2/RP98)

RENAISSANCE OF A TOP CHÂTEAU (Terminal City Club, Vancouver, BC, Canada): Medium plus purple core, going almost all the way to the rim. Slow moving legs. Slightly muted at first, but soon opening up to reveal notes of dark chocolate, cassis, violet, dark fruit, smoke, cedar, baking spice, licorice. Very complex. Palate similar to the nose. Powerful but ripe tannins, with long finish. The most accessible wine in the vertical flight. The higher portion of Merlot definitely helps. (67% CS and 33% Merlot)

The wine exudes aroma of ripe plums, black cherries, liquorice and cadied violets. On the palate, the entry is powerful, with rich red fruits that gradually evolve, giving off a gravelly sort of minerality. The wine is supported by an acid spine and powdery tannins, with slight astringency at the back end of the palate. The finish is of medium length, with flavours of preserved plum and a kiss of sweet oak spice.
This sexy Pauillac is filled to the brim with ripe, sweet, opulently textured layers of fruit, earth, spice, licorice and espresso beans. Forward in style, with the right blend of freshness coupled with intensity and lush tannins, if you lack patience, this is right wine for you. If you have the willpower to wait for it to develop, this is also the right wine to buy. I'm happy I own it.

Drank in London As per previous note this really is the best Pichon Baron that I have tasted. Still very young and primary and I drank it along side it's sister LaLande. The brother wins in '09 and has much more complexity and richness.

Decanted and drank over 2 days. Very dark in color with a tight but bold nose of black fruit, cedar and coffee. The palate matched with more deep black fruit, some smoke, bitter earth and plenty of tannin. Very ripe. Even after a day this was still pretty tight. It will need a lot of time, but the core of fruit is outstanding, but the tannin is more evident than other 2009s I have had. Long finish. The rest of the case will last a long time.

Le Week-end des Grands Crus (Bordeaux): 68CS, 29M. Very dark color. Very typical cassis but almost distilled black currants! Very concentrated and surprisingly sof style. Good acidity to go with it. Wait 5 years.

Inky in color, with a blast of smoke, earth, tobacco, cassis, espresso bean, blackberry jam and smoke in the perfume. Powerful, concentrated and deep, with layers of perfectly ripe, silky blackberry, mocha and spicy plums, the wine remains on your palate for close to 50 seconds! There is not a single hair out of place.

Goedhius Bordeaux Cru Classe Tasting (Saatchi Gallery): Being poured by Christian Seely who had four of his Bordeaux range on display (Pichon Longueville, Pibran, Petit Village and Suduiraunt). The finest Pichon Baron I have ever tasted. Huge nose of cassis, cherries, plumbs, tar and vanilla. Rich complex mouth with strong tannins that will make this wine age a long time. Very long length. Amazing, will come back in 5 years to see how its cooking.

UGC Bordeaux (Sheraton Hotel - Chicago IL): Good floral start with massive, dense black fruit aromas. Big, bold flavors that stay slightly behind the big, bold tannins today. Lots of spice comes through on the finish. This is one of the more structured of the 2009s today.

First taste doesn't do much for me - smooth but not refined in feel, with surprisingly plummy acidity for the vintage. Not much power or ripeness considering the vintage. 90-91?
Second taste from different bottle: better, with some lead pencil character, fairly tannic with again, the plummy acidity. Perhaps given the character of the vintage, I was expecting something powerful and opulent like the 1990 Baron, but this is surprisingly middle-of-the-road in feel to me. Still, undoubtedly better than the first sample, 92ish and I'm willing to give upside up to 93+ on this one based on track record and the structure showing here.

UGC 2009 Bordeaux Tasting - NYC - 1.25.12 (New York City): A bit atypical on the nose. Far more feminine in its lovely floral lift. Like a precocious youth wowing you with his memorization skills. Reminiscent more so of the Lalande in many ways. Red fruit and cassis but far more backward than the 08 was at this stage. It is less transparent and classic in its expression, but more like a show horse. Stuffed to the gills with tannins and fruit. One doesn’t need to worry about the structure or over-treated oak as some of the other wines. I still haven’t been able to discern its Pauillac roots after sampling the wine for some time, but the big 09s are so embryonic and must be judged with a longer time horizon. (93-97)

Union des Grands Grus 2009 Bordeaux Tasting (Petersen Automotive Museum, Los Angeles): Gorgeous nose of freshly roasted coffee beans, lead pencil, black cherries, dark plums, asphalt, and cassis. Lots of complexity and layers on the nose. Great structure on the palate, displaying lead pencil shavings, cassis, red currants, dark cherries, black plums, and a good dose of espresso. Lots of gripping tannins, along with a long finish ending with notes of espresso and lead pencil. A great wine, and if it wasn't for the Lynch-Bages on this evening, this would have been my wine of the tasting. Fantastic.

Leading with smoke, tobacco, blackberry liqueur and gravelly scents, this full bodied, soft textured, black cherry and cassis filled wine ends with ripe sensation of fresh, blackberries and espresso bean. While this lacks the power and ripeness of the 2010, it has improved since it was first tasted in April 2010.

for a 2009 this is pretty backwards, but everything is relative of course... The signature powerful dark fruit of P-B is here in abundance but there is a certain soft roly-poly character to the overall profile. You couldn't ask for a better example of the sheer oddity of the 2009 vintage ("A weird freak" Remy Edange would tell us at Dom de Chev in the morning). 93?

CellarTracker Bordeaux Trip; 5/23/2011-5/26/2011 (Bordeaux, France): Barrel sample. While not as forward as the 2010 at the present time, the nose was still wonderful, showing lots of plum, graphite, cassis, and tar, along with some leather and a touch of fresh mint. However, the palate isn’t hiding in the slightest, showing copious amounts of cassis, cigar leaf, lead pencil shavings, oak, slightly sweet black cherry, and a touch of tar. Dense and full bodied, with dusty mouth drying tannins and medium+ acidity. Long+ finish, ending with a note of cassis. Little doubt this will be outstanding with some time under its belt. Fantastic.

Tight Nose: cherry; spearmint; ballpoint pen ink. Palate was tannic, chalky, red-fruited, and a tad oaky and bitter. My favorite of the 4 wines tasted here, although I think the 2010 is better structured.

CT Bordeaux Trip, Day 1 (Pauillac, Bordeaux, France): Wow - I really enjoyed this. The nose was still a bit tight, some coffee oak scents, some dark plum and cassis fruit, wood spice, some dried earth. The palate was a whole different matter though - surprisingly plush, smooth, almost velvety, it was certainly opened for business, attacking with a mouthfull of clean dark fruit that strode energetically across the mid-palate into a friendly finish that showed some lovely black fruit, some tobacco flavours and a little touch of oak. Very yummy, almost hedonistically so, and surprisingly open fruity, open and generous. While the 2010 barrel sample came across as noble and serious, this is all about the succulent, immediately seductive quality of the 2009 fruit. Thankfully, however, the Pichon-Baron managed to wed this to an impressive sense of balance and some structure. Really impressive - delicious now, but this should make a really great mid-term wine.

2009 Pichon Baron is deep ruby, with notes of black raspberry, flowers, spice, mocha, and coffee in the nose. The round textured wine has a fresh finish of elegant dark plums and spicy chocolate. I like the style of the wine, even if it did not afford the power and concentration found in previous great vintages. 93-95 Pts

No decant, just pop and pour. On the nose, hints of coffee, truffle, black fruit, musky notes, funk and meat. On the palate, lots of black fruit and blackberry, hints of meat and dark chocolate, some licorice on the back palate, wood, quite a bit of spice. The finish is medium. A powerful play. 94/100

Great wine.

2) 1998 - 95 point
2) 2005 - 95 point
3) 1982 - 94 point
4) 2010 - 94 point

Tasting note:
Dark berries, smoke, oak / wood, savoury and herb.

Average blind score 4 tasters: 93.0
Rank: 34th out of 48 wines

Dinner at Wah Lok. Decanted for 1 hour. Dark purple. Velvety smooth. Rich, concentrated, voluptuous but not heavy. Elegant and well balanced. Probably will still improve further with more age. 95+

An amazing vertical tasting at Pichon Baron with pairings:
2015, 2014, 2011, 2010, 2009, 2005, 2003, 2002.
*They are reducing the amount of sulfur and piloting UV to sterilize.
Could not emphasize enough to do a tasting and meal there if given the opportunity- homerun.

67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot.
Capa alta, morado cerrado.
En nariz es un lujo de detalles, floral, especias, mineral, mina de lápiz o grafito.
Tanino presente que mejorará en los próximos 10 años.
Tiene carácter nada más olerlo, concentrado y muy expresivo.

Huge first taste with plenty of volume and body yet very smooth into a medium lingering finish, soft tannins and silk, and early complexity of earth. Will continue to age nicely.

Not quite as aristocratic as the 2010 on the palate - quite different in style, lots of richness, generosity. Good tannic bite, lovely acidity. Very long and intense finish. Very impressive. 94-95+

Feels like it has more merlot than it actually contains, such is the nature of 2009, a 1982 clone (although clearly better than that vintage across the board)
09 and 10 Pichon will spark debate for decades to come, much like their older brothers the 89 and 90. Now, 09 is the wine to buy and drink, but in two decades, expect the 2010 to really shine.

2009 UGC Bordeaux Tasting (San Francisco): Good nose with great fruit; palate approachable with dense black fruits. Nothing really stood out about this wine but very good overall. 92-93

2009 Bordeaux Union des Grands Crus Tasting (The Doral Resort & Spa, Miami, FL): Surpringly smooth and approachable, yet still well structured with good concentration of dark fruit and classic Pauillac elements.

Fantastic.

the wood is already well integrated, well balanced, the potential to deliver a great wine within 15 years or so is there

Spine tingling brooding richness here - very impressive. Hugely rich yet fresh; huge extract - some considerable tannins hidden beneath the layers of fruit. Impressive but could be overworked - time will tell. 93-96.

Fantastic.

CT Bordeaux Trip 2011 - Day 1 (France, Bordeaux, Pauillac): -- tasted a single pour non-blind over 5 – 10 minutes --

Much more minty and herbal on the nose than the 2010 served alongside. Quite ripe and fruity; lush palate, very hedonistic with smooth tannins. Huge amounts of rich flavour. Really superb. Polished classy finish.

93-95 Pts
