Opened with pizza from Zeek's, which recently opened in West Seattle (yay!). I was concerned as the capsule (real lead from the feel of it) wasn't looking too great, and when I cut it off the cork looked even worse. I got the cork out - not in one piece - and it was kind of saturated all the way up. But the nose - wow! Reminded me of a good red Burgundy. Quite fruity, with some dark cherry and that hint of acidity which tickles the back of your throat when you smell it (in a good way!). The color was pretty deep purple, a bit cloudy, with some bricking at the edges of the glass. On the palate, the fruit wasn't nearly as evident as on the nose, but there was cassis and brambly zinberry lurking in the glass. Cedar, leather, spicebox - it wasn't aged Burgundy or Bordeaux, but has some elements of both. I could tell it was an old wine, but it held up VERY well. The tannins were pretty well resolved, and while the alcohol on the label is 14.6%, it sure didn't have any heat. All in all, a welcome surprise, and a very nice experience. My wife liked it too, and her palate has been off for a year (pregnancy, birth). Thanks, Errol!

Blind Tasting 1980-87 Ridge Geyservilles (Rich & Peggy's House, Los Altos, CA): Pretty red raspberry nose. Medium bodied with medium+ acidity. Mix of tart and ripe raspberry fruit sprinkled with cinnamon. Tasty, great acidity. (my 2nd, group's 1st)

Nose - pungent, mature, biting, smoky, ashy, delicately sweet, caramelized, cinnamon, redwood, candied orange zest, breakfast tea.
Biting, tobacco, kirsch, peppermint and spearmint, slightly bitter chalky finish.
