  • Wines for the Acker Merrall Bicentennial Auction (The Pool - New York NY): Fully mature red and black cherry with
Impressive depth and a spice component that just screams “VOSNE!” Slightly sweet in the middle through finish from maturing wine that is madeirizing elegantly and gracefully. So delicious.

  • From a nice looking bottle (4.5 cm fill), this wine had a red center and pale red/orange rims. The high intensity (99 pt) nose showed roasted meat, red fruit, roses, salt, and soil.

In the mouth, this wine was refined and balanced with nice acidity and light rounded tannin. While the impact in the mouth could have benefited from the depth and nuance evidenced in the nose, this was still a very impressive wine.

I felt completely comfortable suggesting to Mark that this was a good wine to drink ASAP. Thanks Mark!

  • Sadly, this bottle did not sing - died quickly and the nose never worked....

  • Celebration Dinner (Chicago): Full crimson/garnet color. Funky nose (maybe a slight bit of corkiness?). Nicely holding tart red fruit on the palate. Lovely beguiling sweetness remaining here.

  • A friend and I were in Bordeaux for the 2005 En Primeur last week and stopped by a nice restaurant for lunch. Saw a 1959 Romanee Conti Echezeaux on the wine list at a "reasonable" price so we decided to take a chance.

Fill was approximately 4 cm from the cork. Color was sensational. Bottle was opened and allowed to rest for about 20-30 minutes before serving.

Overall, this was a sensational wine. The wine started with intense earthy and smoky aromas, with nice traces of spice as well. Clearly this was a fully mature wine, but was still showing great signs of fruit. Flavor started with some beautiful red cherry, complemented by great earthy character that mirrored the aromas. The finish was elegant and spicy, with wonderful lingering flavors.

This wine evolved for almost two hours, gaining depth over the course of lunch. After two hours the fruit was just starting to fade, just as we were finishing.

Burgundy-Report

(Romanée-Conti Echézeaux) Medium-plus colour, both deeper and younger looking than the Bonnes-Mares. The nose also has much more depth of an obvious oak note. Soft and concentrated with just a slight lift of the acidity. Apparently much more compact in the mid-palate than the Bonnes-Mares but with equal length. This is clearly a ‘younger’ and more powerful wine but just a little less enticing and balanced than the Bonnes-Mares today. Re-reading this sounds harsh, but it was a very good wine indeed that I’d be happy for you to open for me
