CdB MN Spring Event (Minneapolis Club, Mpls, MN): Very dark red/purple color with a 2mm clear edge. Drank a couple glasses over 2 hours from a 6L Imperial. If I have this right, it was open for 3.5hrs, then was decanted into multiple 1 liter Erlenmyer flasks until serving about 2 hours later. The color is impressive, still dense and well saturated, in very good shape; Cigar box, pencil, tobacco leaf, minerals, cassis, dried violets, and a hint of eucalyptus on the provocative nose. The palate is full bodied, there's some nice funk and earth here, classic Pauillac, cassis, black raspberry, pencil and fine cigar, mineral and sweet wood notes and a little umami character. The tannins are nice, rounded and complimentary and this has good length. My second glass had quite a bit of sediment and was not quite as impressive as the first. It was great fun to drink this from Imperial!

During a Matter of Taste dinner, only brief impressions. This was gone in a jiffy, everybody wanted to taste this Mouton. Well balanced, forest floor, soft palate. Good but out-shined by the 2000 Trotanoy.

5 of 6…Decanted @ 4:00 served @ 7:30 still dark and dense. Initial bouquet was quite intense revealing layers of sweet red fruit, some tar and spice notes as well. The palate showed fine tannins, smooth texture, balanced acidity and an elegant finish. As the evening wore on some vegetal green pepper notes often found in 85s presented themselves but didn’t detract from our enjoyment. This is still quite youthful and should improve over the next 10 years and drink well for another 10 years after that.
Seductive and delicious Pauillac aromas with pencil, cigar box and dark cool fruit. The earlier pronounced barrrel aroma has integrated well, but is still there with some vanilla and caramel. Polished, concentrated and generous on the palate, with fine tannins and plenty of fruit left. A perfect Mouton 85?

Mouton Rothschild Vertical: My fourth bottle. Medium+ nose intensity with notes of ripe black and red fruits, toast, pepper, wet forest. Medium+ acidity and medium tannin. Decanted for 5 hours.

(Chateau Mouton-Rothschild) Classic nose of lead pencil, tobacco box, minerals, earth, smoke, currants, cassis. The Pauillac symphony in full effect. Supple and ripe on the palate with great depth. Oodles of dark berry fruits and ripe sweet tannins. Supple like most '85's I have had recently. Easy to drink and perfectly balanced. Still a very dark color and has a ways to go but a pleasure today.
