Opened ~3hrs before drinking. Beautiful nose but still a little tight on the palette. With additional time opened up beautifully. Sure, fruit has faded a bit but drinking great right now. Blueberry, plum, & a hint of cranberry.

Comparative tasting with a selection of 1998 Bordeaux. It showed well but was outclassed by Langoa Barton and Las Cas. A little less powerful but it tasted well the following day and after sealing with a Vacuvin. Still good value
Cellared since release. Coravined on Nov 13, 14, 15, finished Nov 16. Deep purple to the rim in the glass. The nose featured black fruit and hints of tobacco. The wine was full bodied with rich fruit and impressive creme de Cassis. The was good acidity and good balance, and integrated supporting tannins to go along with a 10 second finish. This second wine of Leoville Las Cases was extremely enjoyable, seemed youthful, and probably drinking at its apex now. I believe this is true of most 2000 Bordeaux that I've had tasted recently. In my opinion it has another 5 to ? 10 years ahead.
92 points. The score would have been higher with a longer finish

Perfect cork, initially the nose and taste were funky. This all cleared up with a one hour decant. Medium ruby, tannins mostly resolved. Fully mature for my palate but not headed down. Cedar and ripe fruit. Very nice.

Bright and youthful! Drinking beautifully, great aromas of the ripe, nutty fruits, a hint of leather, mahogany chest. A wine of seriousness! Give it a couple of years of cellaring in order to reach new heights.

My contribution tonight of our blind tasting session at Sheraton KL.
Popped on the spot and initial pour - slight barnyard. Further ox revealed nuances of cassis, dried fig and dried mushrooms. Still very youthful with great acidity but very refined tannins. Drinking very well now and perhaps it would do so in the next 2 yrs.

Decanted 30 minutes. Here is a very nice "little" bordeaux, that has nice funk, acidity, earth, red fruit, tar and a lingering finish. This is what you hope to get from a lesser bordeaux with 22 years of age.

Lovely balanced wine, classic St Julien middle ground between power and finesse, with notes of cassis, plums, a hint of tobacco and spices, smooth and well integrated tannins.
Not quite up to the level of 1996 Poyferre alongside which was exceptional and had a bit more complexity and lovely floral notes, but this was delicious and recommended.
Ready to go and I expect has a few years left in it too.

Solid. A little disappointing in the first hour but fleshed out after a couple of hours. Definitely at peak but given it’s improved after a couple of hours indicates that it’s got a few years left.
The nose is probably the most expressive element of the wine. Lots of mature elements, earth, wet leaves, leather and tobacco. A touch of the fecal too.
On the palate the tertiary elements carry through at first then followed by dry and fresh red fruits (dried cranberries and cherries and then sone fresh berries too. A pinch of dried herbs and a touch of toffee. Tannins are fully resolved with medium acidity and a shortish finish with earl grey tea notes on the back palate.
I gave it 89 based on the first hour but as it filled out and broadened in the second hour, I’ve upped my score.

Very enjoyable indeed. Improved with time open. Some sediment to remove. This was my last bottle of this year 2000, unfortunately. For those still holding this wine, I'd say it is going to stay very good for several years yet. No hurry.

It’s really good. Well balanced with a silky mouthfeel. Bramble, dark fruit with a bit of dirt on the palette. Drink now. I can’t see it getting any better.

Slow O'd 6 hours. Here is a very nice "little" bordeaux, that has nice funk, acidity, earth, red fruit, tar and a lingering finish. There could be a touch of "modernity" in it, as the red fruits sometimes leant to black. Or maybe I misunderstand that. Regardless, this is what you hope to get from a lesser bordeaux with 22 years of age.

Still inky purple. Nose leads with cassis, bramble and menthol. The palate follows with the same, rich smooth cassis, cool menthol, hints of cedar, an edge of saltiness, and a touch of spiciness. Savory despite the fruit. Good balance but leans toward richness, lacking just a smidgen of acidity. Overall good stuff and fun to drink.

Medium dark. Refined but expressive fragrance - Briary, cassis, salty, tar spice. Silky, super refined, very nicely balanced and finishing softly but with excellent acidity. Cassis and dark spice, tobacco leaf complexity, feels mature and ready to drink. Lovely drinking.

Dark, brooding berry fruit with hints of menthol wafting on the nose. Their are notes of rich tobacco and earth in this medium bodied wine. We did a 2 hour plus decant and while this no doubt helped this open up, I don’t think this will improve dramatically with age. But it should hold for sometime. This is a great drink.

Dark brooding and intense. Popped and poured so I poured a glass and gave the rest a shake. Opened up a bit and showed great promise, but needed much, much more air.
Tasty though, so it was gone too soon. Will buy a replacement and decant it next time.

Dark and brooding with good fruit and some earthy and truffle notes. Definitely not showy but solid, medium bodied Bdx. I still don’t know what to make of most 2000s. Will this improve?

deepish red purple, hints of bell pepper and more obvious notes of game on the nose, on the palate maturing but still on the austere side, opening nicely, hints of cherry with time, potential for a very nice and unusually relaxing 2000.

Dinner with the Litigators' Wine Group (East Treasure): A really enjoyable Clos du Marquis. It had a classic left-bank nose pf loamy, earthy sous bois patted down over a bed of sweet cassis and black cherry aromas, these chased by little drifts of herb and tobacco spice. The palate was showing quite at peak, with soft tannins and plump acidty wrapped around clear little rivulets of juicy cassis and plums, again with a note of earth and a little hint of cedar. I had the impression that this was rather light, even second wine - especially for strong vintage like 2000. It had a slightly shorter finish too - with a nice hint of smoky tobacco - but such was the lovely soft elegance and extreme charm of the wine that those aspects were quickly forgiven. Immensely drinkable, and showing quite about at peak now.

Lovely nose on opening with just a bit of funk but promise of dark fruit melange. Decanted for 1 hour. Opened up but seems still constructed. But left till next day and suggests still has time and needs lengthy decant.

Pristine cork. Nose - fresh flowers, dry dirt, sour cherries and cigar. Palate shows the full breadth of flavors one would expect from a classic st Julien: rich red and black berries, stone, orange peel, leather, and freshly sharpened pencil. While no one would mistake this for LLC, the frame is surprisingly muscular, with bright acid, teeth coating tannins, good textural depth, and a sappy finish. At a youthful peak, not sure it will get better, but will surely last another 10+ years.

Addendum: After having the fortune to taste a third bottle, I was very surprised at the vibrancy. It tasted at least 5 years younger than the first two I tried. It goes to show how bottle variation can be a big factor, especially after 20 years!
The finish was long vs. medium, and the fruit was just more pure and lively.

Not a lot of signs of aging, the colour is still very much on the deep violet/ruby side with a light ruby rim. The nose really jumps out at you with beautiful floral tones. Accompanied with cassis, menthol, some blue fruit, a touch of smoke, leather and lovely cedar notes. It's medium bodied with the tannins all but melted away. There's dried dark fruit and some tilled earth on the palate, and just enough acidity left to keep the notes lingering. This is an elegant wine. Drink up!

OK...I've drank 4 of these over 20 years or so...bought a case + on release and stored in a cellar...the drinking window on this is way longer than initially thought by RP and others. the fruit isn't dead/on the decline...it's a powerful wine in a deep sleep. This bottle was one of the few that started to open a little to give a glimpse of what's ahead. Agree with rinnocenzi on this. Deep muted blueberries and cherries with a bleach edge....fruit is fighting to get out with air. all spice, cinnamon, pencil led...leather edges...all swirling...muted...trying to get out. will be amazing in 5 + years.

During a Commanderie LLC dinner with ex-Chateau bottles. Nose of dark fruit, some licorice, oak and a whiff of forest. The palate is masculine and the tannins nicely resolved. Very correct but the wine had a hard time against the LLC's next to it.

91-92: followed the Latour, the Marquis stood between the preceding two Bordeaux giants. More generous than the Latour, but not as perumed as the Margaux, this bottle was a massive value. Las Cases always delivers. This wine has years left.

Nose has notes of dark fruit and dried herbs, with a touch of graphite and band-aid(?!). Palate was round and soft, light to medium in body, and it had classic cassis, plum, and oaky flavors. The finish is quite short, and I think it is fully mature. It’s a lovely Bordeaux, but I’ll be drinking my remaining bottles over the next year or two.

A peek into some 2000 Bordeaux (Margeaux Brasserie, Chicago IL): Nose: The nose is open and well balanced with red cherries, cranberries, currants, spice box notes, roses, cedar, tobacco, and leather tones. There is good depth but this lacks somewhat in complexity.
Taste: The feel is medium bodied with medium acidity and silky, medium+ tannins. There is a little stiffness to the tannins but otherwise, the structure has effectively resolved. The feel is well balanced with red cherries, cranberries, currants, spice box notes, tobacco, cedar, and leather tones.
Overall: This is right in its zone. There is a real sour red fruit quality that is showing well while the secondary and tertiary notes have harmonized beautifully. It does lack some depth and complexity but on the whole this is a lovely bordeaux that is right at its maturity level for a long time.

Tasted next to 2010 Ducru Beaucaillou. A bit of discolouration around the edges, dark core. Not very expressive on the nose showing some dark fruit, tobacco, cedar, spices. On the palate rather grippy and a little hard, not too much fruit. Good acidity, firm tannins, well balanced with medium depth and length. Could be a bit more generous. 88-90

Roasted carrots, cedar, subtle vanilla, red and black fruits, and roasted meat on the nose. Not super aromatic, but still has some depth on the nose. Shines on the palate. Medium acid and the same notes on the palate. Finishes with darker fruit and has a medium+ length finish.
Drinking really nicely currently with no sharp edges and a silky texture. Still opening up 2.5 hours in. Elegant and still powerful.

This wine is drinking perfectly with a pnp. Graphite, pony barn, cedar, cola, and medium bodied black cherry fruit. I fine this vineyard can be thin on fruit in other years, but the 2000 is right on. I would not wait to see if there is more maturity. There is a risk of loosing the fruit. I had this wine with rack of lamb and it did not disappoint. Nicely balanced, resolved tannins. I would say it is the best wine from this vineyard in a long time and I am glad I opened it up tonight.

Much, much better than my last bottle a few years ago (dumb or off?). Color is dark garnet with just a hint of lightening at the rim. Nose shows cassis, earth, tobacco, and lead. On the palate, still sweet black fruit at the fore, framed with tobacco and spice. Tannins are nicely integrating and there is enough, but not excessive, acidity. Long finish and better on day 2. A keeper.

13% ABV. Bottle #3 out of a case purchased on futures. Much more expressive than the previous two bottles, this was loaded with cassis, red cherries, lead pencil, leather and plums. Medium-bodied in the mouth, with minerals, herbs and bittersweet chocolate dominant. Finishes pretty long, with gentle grip and a minerally edge. A lovely left bank Bordeaux in its early maturity phase. 92.

Smack in the middle of drinking window! This is some liquid pencil with elegance and presence. Finishes a bit short, but reminds me of a well aged 1996 with all the elegance in the bottle. The Grand Vin is a beast and at least 7 to 10 years away from allowing gentle petting...But this puppy is howling in joy right now. Classic Bordeaux. Great value too...Drink

Needed about a half hour in the decanter to warm, open, and let some funk disipate. This is old school Bordeaux, with graphite, earth, and very dark muted fruit. CT says 18 is the end of its window, but is good for another 2 to 4 years, as it still has the structure and stuffing to go longer.

Crimson in color. 13% ABV. Restrained nose of red fruits, leather and pencil shavings. Medium body with just enough acidity. Warm and round on the palate. Flavors of currants, cassis, earth and minerals. Medium length on the finish with soft, mostly resolved tannins. This wine is not likely to improve with additional time in the bottle. Drink soon.

Bought today in a store with less than optimal storage conditions. I chose the bottle lying in the back & dark at abt 26 dg C. Put it in the fridge for 1 hr. Cork crumbled to pieces, so i guessed suboptimal storage was longer than one might wish. Decanted through a tea sieve, then back in a cleaned bottle. Healthy deep red with little maturity at the edge. Nose some coffee, toffee, caramel and red fruits. Graphite. Smells like 10ys ago when i had a very good bottle (abt 94pt.) First sips short restrained but pure no cork...phew! Healthy acid, good balance. Mid weight and mid length. Gets better at least over 2hrs. Better stored bottles/ Mgs should go up a notch or two. Nice/ very good Ready, will hold a while

Slightly better than the '99 we just had but awfully similar. Nose is classic Bordeaux with dark fruits, cigar box and cassis. It has quite a bit of sense of place but lacks some extraction to give it more depth and structure. Aside from tannins being quite mellow, there's not many signs of development. I don't know if more time will do this any good. It's in a good stage right now.

A fairly deep colour; quite pure blackcurrant fruit, somewhat austere and lacking charm, and with a slightly green, woody element. Certainly good, but rather solid, as Clos du Marquis often seems to be for some reason.

A great Bordeaux with real power and a very long way to go. Drank with a leg of lamb (rate), decanted 2 hours before drinking. Quite perfect.
Berry fruits at the front of mouth, hint of mint and other herbs. Redcurrants. Fine tannins, completely integrated into the wine. Too long seen as a “second wine” of Leoville Las Cases which, in fact, I don’t think it ever was — it is a separate vineyard. This wine is just coming into its own. Everyone around the table (4) loved this wine.

I am rating because this seems to be a controversial wine. Upon opening, as noted by many others, this wine was very thin and tasted of cranberries, tart blackberry, etc. I was initially going to give it an 82-84. However, after decanting 5 hours, the wine changed into a completely different beast. It was no longer thin. It gained beautiful weight, tasted of a fine aged Bordeaux. Elegant fruit and integrated, soft tannins.
Fine old school Bordeaux. Bravo, disappointment averted.

Too young still. Dark purple with lighter purple edges and zero sediment, this wine is still 3-7 years from full maturity and maximum potential. Lovely nose of cherry, plum and date but still tight and unyielding. If a date, this was a 19 year old college freshman beauty just arrived from the farm: On paper she has it all but has neither the inherent maturity nor life experiences/ worldliness to go it alone and make an impact. I'll leave my remaining bottles another 7 years at least.

No decant necessary. Still maintains a deep garnet color. Soft and unassuming nose of stalky black cherry, tar, wet wood, and mushrooms. Highly evolved and mature in the mouth. Dried unsweetened cherries and green pepper with a back-note of tree bark. Somewhat muted and falls off a bit in the back but its Saint Julien lineage is evident. Makes me very curious about its big brother LLC from this vintage -- wish I had some. These are ready to drink now.

Visually, younger than I anticipated. Aromatically, classic mature Bordeaux. Tobacco, cigar box, cassis. Could smell this for hours. On the palate, it is more lean and restrained than I anticipated - but very enjoyable. You can tell this is a good if perhaps somewhat simple wine from a very good vintage. Medium bodied (at most), with fine and well integrated tannins. Delightful and charming.

The tasting note from "JOE" on August 15, 2017 is perfect and is completely in line with my own observations on this bottle. Softer tannins, an at-best-medium earthy complexity on the nose shows that this wine is nearing the end of its life. Given the quality of the vintage, that leads me to question the style in which it was made - was this made for immediate consumption and the fruit has faded? Or was the initial fruit selection just a little substandard? Not sure but at this point, its a good (not great) wine that needs to be drunk within 5yrs for certain.

I have soft spot for this 2nd wine of LLC estate. I was introduced to it in a Notting Hill wine shop when on a budget as an way to get "A-list adjacent". A decade or so later, my mother-in-law bought me a case of the 2000 when I got married. I've four bottles left for the 20th anniversary party, so they better stay in shape. Tasting it again tonight, it's aged well enough without really achieving lift-off. The nose is robust - gusty boozy wafts of raspberry coulis. But the taste is a tad raspy - it's a meaty wine best drunk with an equally meaty dinner. Teasing out the nuances means decanting for a few hours, and even then I have to admit it doesn't really evolve to any great complexity. A touch muddy and flat, but I have a soft spot for this unapologetic bruiser. It's an honest earthy effort. If anyone knows of a vintage that soared, I'd love to know.
Had another bottle Xmas Day 2023: Probably past its peak but still nice with dinner. Not much cassis fruit left and a quickly fading finish but no raspy edge at this age and the middle is a full-blown earthy peaty sous bois fest.
Deep ruby red. Cassis, tobacco and ash can all be found in the aromatics of the 2000 Clos du Marquis. It is medium-bodied, somewhat simple in the mouth, with modest grip from the now nearly-resolved tannins. Now at peak, this is a good--rather than great--wine, and is clearly missing additional nuances and complexity that characterize other outstanding wines from the vintage. Drink over the next 5 years. 89.

Totally opaque purple-black colour just lightening to a tiny watery meniscus. Nose is black high-cocoa chocolate and cocoa beans and vanilla pods and tart blackberries. Palate is brightly acidic, somewhat too much so, and a lot of tannin remniscent of the seeds in wild blackberries. Dry tannic finish. Rather green? Not much length. It fell off into worse acidity and greenness as the hours went by. Not much to love here. How did they get it so wrong in this vintage?

What a difference six years make. The color is still youthfully dark. The nose though is more expressive with licorice, potpourri, and macerated Bing cherries. The palate has also improved, gaining weight and becoming more silky with graphite, blackberry notes. Based on recent notes, I think the wine is just entering its drinking window. Enjoy.

Opened an hour before drinking, not decanted. Dark deep garnet colour with full, meaty aromas and very gratifying complex Cabernet flavours to boot. Intense, mineral and earthy with a good balance of fruit remaining. Soft tannins and a nice finish, could have been longer but maybe that's more the preserve of its elder brother LLC. Day 2 the flavours had softened and the fruit subsided somewhat, leaving it a little dampened. Excellend drinking now. I wouldn't leave it more than a few years though, maybe at its peak?

I'm recovering from a bad cold. While my health is better, my disposition certainly isn't yet. Popped this and poured a taste. I was dumfounded. It was identical to CheratussinAC. I am not kidding about this. It had been four hours since my last dose of cough syrup. Heck, the cough syrup is only $70 for 750 ml, and does have codeine to boot. So for me, dark fruit cough syrup and mildly decaying vegetation on the nose, disharmonious cough syrup palate, terminating with awkward tannins and no pleasing sensation of coating the throat. This could be all me. But wife's opinion was "nothing special". Which evolved to "don't pour me any more." Now to click and read what everyone else says.

Deep ruby red. First bottle from a case purchased as futures. Plums, cedar, saddle leather, licorice, herbs and hints of bitter chocolate make up the 2000 Clos du Marquis. Medium-bodied in the mouth, with black fruits, tobacco and earthy notes in the mid-palate, eventually transitioning to a reasonably persistent finish that contains some residual tannin which clings to the palate after the wine is swallowed. Judging by the numerous tertiary nuances, this is certainly within its drinking window. That said, this is in no danger of fading anytime soon. If there is a (slight) knock here, it is that the mouthfeel and overall refinement could be a bit better. Then again, it is a second label. 91.

Perhaps I was expecting a little more or perhaps it was my bottle but it did not live to the appellation nor vintage expectations. I let it breathe for about an hour. It had a nice palate feel but I thought it lacked the expression of St-Julien. It still very enjoyable with good.

Sad; had this wine in the cellar 12 years, and it's clearly past it for my taste. 3 hour decant, and it may have been too much. Great structure, but lacking in fruit and complexity. Mostly barnyard, a touch of VA maybe, and faded cherry. I'd drink up and skip a lengthy decant.

What an interesting evolution. First opened, it was strong of barnyard. Not unpleasant, just off. Decanted 2 hours. During dinner it was gorgeous with roast beef. Opened up, an older claret. Very masculine, but not in any way assertive. Now, 4 hours after opening, it's starting to ramp up a little in acidity. Tannins are soft. Still cigar box and earth and old saddle leather. The fruit is faded but black - not-yet-ripe blackberry. I originally thought this would fade at 2-3 hours but it's not. I have a couple more of these and when I drink them, I think I'll decant about 4 hours, which is something I would not have guessed to be true. Quite a lovely experience.

Interesting variety of views below. Nose is good ( there was a an odd barnyard when first decanted). Nose is simple and inviting but not intoxicating. Drank over a hour with steak and it changed from a somewhat closed and uninspiring drink ( c 20 mins in) to a really good claret. Certainly mature but will last as there is plenty of fruit and well structured tannin there. I would agree with the optimal drinking date till 2018

Drank from magnum on Thanksgiving. Fairly simple on the nose. Tannins fairly resolved with red fruit and pretty straight forward. Not much complexity and did not evolve much over the two hours. Hollow on the mid palate and finish was rather short. Nothing exceptional here and no reason to wait on. It is what it is, a 2nd label of a 2nd growth. It's a relatively simple quaffe but I think there are a lot better values to be had.

Deep ruby colorless rim. Ripe fresh blackberry, cedar, coffee bean, licorice, sweet spices, some leather. Layered, good depth, smooth. Good to drink now and plenty of life ahead.

Purchased at release and excellent storage since. Decanted for 45 minutes and then enjoyed. Dark ruby, cedar nose, deep rich nose. spreads out on the palette. Drinking very well now and I would guess for several more years.

I bought this on release and have stored in bond then in cellar. Decanted for 1 hour. Lovely floral nose, good bramble fruit and nice balance. This exceeded my expectations but if I had a criticism it would be a slightly hollow middle palate/ thinner mouthfeel than I would like. Overall a lovely wine for the price as it then was.

{cork, 13%} Way better than July's bottle; same deep garnet colour with a brick rim, but here the nose was aged and quite powerful for sixteen years; loaded with the blackest of currant fruits, along with basil, herbs, cedar. The palate is medium-bodied, with a certain austerity about it; there is a sense of the fruit thinning out, but it's still structurally satisfying, even though the tannins are now just a whisper. The flavours are as the nose promises. Dry, barely medium-length finish; a pretty decent Bdx, not unripe, although trading a bit on the LLC connection probably. Ready to drink, and quite satisfying as long as your expectations aren't too high and you didn't pay too much money!

Perfect cork, medium ruby. Drinking really well right now with a 30 minute decant. I see some low scores here. I can say that purchasing this wine at release and storing it well for 13 years, the wine is excellent.
Opened for a couple of hours; did not decant. Just lovely. Excellent fruit remains and is complemented by classic secondary and tertiary notes. Poised, multidimensional but easy, medium-weight, and perfect with lamb chops. How nice would it be to drink a bottle of this ... whenever.

similar to prior outing. 45 min decant. ruby color. faintly earthy cedary aroma and more structure than fruit in general but enough fruit to sustain interest and be yummy with food. It is not much of a wow wine. 89-90

Cork was in excellent condition. On opening it displayed a raisiny bouquet of dark fruits and some tobacco. Somewhat disjointed, and reminded me of a wine that was left open for too long . on tasting the deep fruit came through with a very tart finish. this wine is either way too young, or it never had the right stuff to begin with. I would not buy any more of this wine as it seems to be all over the place and doesn't represent the region very well. 2000 may be one of those years that is way overated.

Well this is very interesting indeed. I agree with most of the recent scores here but not the comments. I'm definitely in the camp that sees this wine as past its peak. The fruit has all but left and what's left of it is more on the red cherry, raspberry side but muted at best. What's left is a muddled mess of soft tannins that once were great but have since left and we are left with a core of nothing but dusty earth and licorice notes, which is fine but with no fruit as a backbone leaves me wanting more from this wine. Bummer.

Quite ripe for a Bordeaux (my wife asked if it was a Napa Cab) and then somewhat astringent on the finish. The bottle seemed in perfect condition and was sourced from Grapes in N. White Plains, NY. It has not aged well and was a disappointment even with charred steak.

I continue to be unimpressed with this wine. I have chalked up a poor showing three years ago as some kind of dumb phase. But the wine continues to be impressively unexpressive. It has been impeccably stored, and shows only the slightest signs of age. The bouquet is exceedingly reticent; one can coax out a bit of Cedar and tobacco but it is a bit like pulling teeth. The wine is very smooth. All of the tannins, and whatever acidity it had, Are completely gone. The problem is that nothing of any great interest has replace them. The fresh fruit is gone, but there are no interesting flavors or nuances that are supposed to be the glory of age the board up! The board The problem is that nothing of any great interest has replace them. The fresh fruit is gone, but there are no interesting flavors or nuances that are supposed to be the glory of aged Bordeaux. I am no beginner in this arena, having won 6th place in the Qoutidien de Paris' Grand Concors des Vins devBordeaux in 1990. So I know what a good aged Boedeaux is supposed to taste like. And this ain't it!

This was OK but rather lean and boney after the more generous 98 Petaluma Coonawarra. Only just medium-bodied with leafy cabernet flavours and soft oak, it's pretty average all round, not showing any great evolution or development. Lacks intensity. Rather a short finish too. A second wine trading on its provenance rather than its contents. I don't think further cellaring will help.

My bottles continue to drink well, though I will finish my last two before the end of the year. I bought my case on release. I do see the fruit getting leaner.

Bright, vibrant bouquet and attack, with mostly red berry aromas and flavours, still in its youth. But...not much depth after the initial burst of fruit and only a moderately persistent finish. Very well made, in that it tastes streamlined, without funk or stodginess, but rather lacking in character. No tannins to resolve, but for the really long haul the lack of grip and depth are worrying. I suppose it depends on what you want or expect: this is a very enjoyable bottle which will please guests, but whatever the owner of LLC would have us believe, this is not a "separate wine", it's LLC's second wine, made of grapes that are not good enough for LLC. As such it's fine, but there are many other CCs offering more for the same price.

I did quite believe that this wine was as critically acclaimed. My skepticism was thrown out to left field when I opened this bottle. The fruit was still very present, berries ,casis, and slight golden raisin. soft tannins with a smooth finish. Great QPR at around 30 dollars.

Stored in my 55 degree cellar since release. Popped and poured. Dark red/black. Nose of black and some red fruit, plus a bit of old leather. Red and black fruit on the palate, medium bodied with a very nice, clean, lingering finish.
Waiting on this has really paid dividends. On its plateau, with at least 3-5+ years to go, but drinking so well now no need to wait. An elegant wine, and a bargain at $25 EP. Makes me hopeful that the big boys of 2000 will be truly great in a few years.

First bottle of this since October 2012. Has clearly reached its drinking plateau, but I'd expect well stored bottles to drink well for at least another 5 years and possibly much longer.

A bit of a disappointment, especially considering the vintage. The aromatics mostly consisted of black currant, raisins, herbs, and green pepper. Lacked vigor on the palate. Perhaps this was an off-bottle?
Rated 94 by Wine Spectator on release so I purchased a case of futures for $300.00! Notes to follow: Excellent fill and cork in great shape Good color in glass with obvious bricking. Earthy bouquet. Great fruit on palate with dusty tannins. Just slightly past peak. A lovely example of a mature claret. A few particles of sediment in final glass. Drink soon.

Quite a deep colour; blackcurrant nose; the palate has good depth, fairly mature fruit and a slight creaminess, perhaps from oak; this was well-structured but seemed slightly restrained compared to some bottles we have had; enjoyable nonetheless. Should keep well.

Like other recent posters noted this took a good while to open up and reveal the tobacco, gravel, dark red fruits, medium plus acidity and nicely integrated tannins yielded a silky smooth palate and medium plus length finish

This was number 6 or so out of a case of 12. The first five have been far from exciting. This however is the first bottle to really start to impress and show that the wine is finally emerging from a long sleep.
Brought the wine up from the cellar the day before and stood it up right, pulling the cork mid morning. By the time we started to drink the wine 8-9 hours latter it has opened up and put on substantial weight and flesh through the mid palate compared to earlier bottles. Silky velvet tannins gave an almost feminine feel to this wine which paired beautifully with lamb back straps over a red pepper ragu.

Agree with many of the recent notes: surprisingly jammy fruit, not much earth or dark tones, less depth than expected, but sour cherry and very spicy finish was the highlight. Tannins seem on their last legs. Paired with sous vide beef filets, potatoes, onions, and mushroom. Would have been better paired with something more delicate. Very good wine, not excellent.

Wine at Arnoldo (at Arnoldo's): dark opaque red-purple excellent tertiary bouquet of dark fruits, tobacco, leather, smoky wood, cedar - seems promising medium-full bodied, round integrated tannins, great balance and mouth feel, still fresh, fair structured, medium complexity, long clean finish. A classic mid-level St. Juliens.

Puzzling is the only way to describe this. Opened ~4 hours before dinner but not decanted. Started with very little fruit, a sense of higher alcohol than the 13% n the label and generally tasting like it was in a very closed state - surprising for a 15 yr old wine. 3 hours later the fruit was finally starting to present itself. Tasty at this point but not as robust as earlier bottles.

This is a non-classic St. Julien from massive 2000. Ripe and almost jammy prune, black current, savory, leather, but lack of fresh leafy notes. M - tannin and M+ acidity. The licorice sweet spice from the oak is still strong but well integrated. A little bit thin on the palate. This second label has slightly missed it optimal but still enjoyable. Do not think this will improve but should keep for another 1-2 years. If you not a big fan of its name, there are some other good alternatives from top cru bourgeois which can have even or better quality than this in the market.
Very Good quality (88)

This wine was only ok given its' roots. The bouquet was muted and had a manure smell with licorice. Not my favorite smell in a wine. The wine was decanted for half and hour. It tasted pleasant enough. It was smooth and no tannins whatsoever. I was just simply underwhelmed with it. Fairly lackluster. I guess I was expecting more. It's certainly above average, but didn't blow any of us away.

Refined bouquet, spicy, round, I couldn't chose between St. Julien and St. Estèphe tasting blind. At the end the alcohol came through a bit; better balanced than most 2000's.

Dazzling. Pure and clean in the glass with minimal sediment. Strawberry, cherry, and a hint of spice. Despite an extraordinary nose it was a tad two dimensional however.
If a date, this was a 25 year old 34-24-34 lovely who spends the evening licking her lips before heading back to your place for some circa 1973 porno pleasure. Cue the slap bass guitar
Richly layered and very rewarding right now. Wonderful nose of dark sweet cherries, saddle leather and slight olive tapenade. On the tongue it has a wonderful deep cassis intermingled with cedar and some forest floor. For a second label it has a wonderful pedigree. It should continue to improve for a long long time.

I have had this wine several times but for the first time I was very pleased. A bit of lightening at the rim. Big cedar and organic compost nose. The wine was decanted but for only 30 minutes and it has a big mouth coating fruit with a long finish. Plenty of structure to last for years and improve a bit but can be enjoyed now. It took 15 years for this wine to come around.

90-92: Giving this wine the benefit of the doubt, it's in an awkward phase right now, tannins have mellowed, still some acid, and fruit still a bit intense but starting to fade into secondary flavors. Very good, but definitely 2nd label quality.

Loads of barrel toast on the nose, with a hint of cinnamon. On the palette, the wine is textured, yet rounded, precise and balanced. Tannins are perfectly integrated, but help to enhance the texture in the mouth. Loads of graphite and dark fruits, such as blackberries. This wine made my evening.. Spectacular!

Super dark cork stained to 2mm with black crystal and a nose of blackberry and cassis - always a good sign. Opened and poured a glass christmas morning and allowed to breath on the bottle for three hours. A fine, rich and smooth wine with great balance and mouth feel. Still fresh and bright - good depth ( perhaps a little hollow in the middle) and long finishes cleanly. I was worried about it falling away so chose not to decant - I probably would next time to see how develops. On day two (left in mag overnight) became a little sharp/tart so it seems can't take a night in the bottle. In sum, a wonderful nose and great fruit, woodsmoke, cedar in balance but perhaps one to dink on the day.

A deep colour; blackcurrant and spice on the nose and palate; quite full and perhaps a touch burly. This has substance and length, but perhaps lacks a little elegance, as there is a slightly green, stalky element, perhaps from the younger vines. Very good though.

Very good. Quick decant, poured first glass right away. Color showing no signs of age. Expressive nose right out of the gate. Medium bodied on the palate, a little tight to start, but loosened up in about 10 mins. Still has some room to smooth out with more cellaring, but fruit might not reward that wait. Firm finish, modest in length. This really improved in the hour we took to drink the bottle. Don't know that I'll wait a long time for my other bottle, but I'll decant at least an hour next time.

Color was dark to the rim with only a bit of lightening at the tim. Nose showed graphite, cedar and dark fruit but was fairly primary. On the palate, typical flavors of Bordeaux -- cassis and dark fruit with some milder secondary flavors coming up. I guess my problem was that the wine seemed a bit one dimensional.

Very youthful in color, nose, and taste. Actually primary on this showing. Thought it could be a 2005 or 2008 in regards to the fruit and structure. Excellent balance, mid plate and length. Red and black fruits dance along with tobacco, spices, mocha, and light mineral lift. This is pretty damn good. Purchased several upon release. I think it was like a top ten out of hundred WS 94pts, which is pretty fair assessment. Perhaps missing the depth of a major classified growth, however, this is excellent. Great initial entry as well. Will hold my remaining bottles for perhaps another 2-5 years, but actually quite rewarding to drink now. Give it some time in the decanter. Positively outstanding.

Hints of cherry and barn nose out of the bottle... Now decanting.... Heavy tannins are apparent in this very rich wine; lets see how she evolves over the next 2.5 hours... 3.5 hours later, things soften and the cherry comes out ahead of all flavors, sweetly concentrated and silky wine. Very characteristic of other 2000s (Les Forts Latour, Carraudes Lafite), solid 90 points. Cork was 4/5 soaked, and in my humble opinion, people should consider drinking up soon. Honestly don't see how this will improve much, at the end of the day, it's a second wine not the Gran Vin... Just below the 1996 in terms of quality, but those bottles are probably long in the tooth now, had them in 2004-5. Just close to that wine's power. Better than the 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004.

Five hour decant. Layer after layer revealed itself in the glass tonight as secondary and tertiary characteristics led the way for the dried fruit core. Classic St Julien cedar and pencil shavings nose. Nose is 93, palate 89. Surprisingly light for a 2000 which begs the question how much longer should/could one hold this? Tannins are surprisingly firm but mid palate is delicate and finishes a bit light.

A typical left bank Bordeaux, exactly what you expect from a 2000 and does not disappoint. Great full and round mouthfeel with a decent amount of lacey tannins. Black currant all around with surprisingly enough fruit for a 13 year old wine. Some tobacco & licorice notes at the end. Loved it a lot! I would have wanted to have decanted it for a few hours, but we were in a restaurant. Paired it with some nice Rack of Lamb in Cardamon sauce... although this wine would not have been my ideal pairing, since we had to compromise for the group, it still went quite well with my dish.

ON decant this shows a clear rim with ruby colored center. It smells of earth with a faint woodsiness and yeast or breadiness (is it what others call pain grille?). The mouth was moderately full and with raspberry on the back end and not a lot of tannin.
This is claret well and cleanly done and deeply satisfying and not scaled to unreasonable expectations. I did not detect a lot of change after decant and it was well paired with a hanger steak and fingerling potato. By points it looks like this: 5+12+16+8

Tasted together with Leoville las cases 1989. The Marquis was doing very good in this comparison, but of course LLC won on much better complexity. The Marquis is still too young, but is develloping very good in the right direction. Keep it in the cellar for another 3-7 years, maybee more.

Not sure what is going on here. Not a flawed or over-the -hill bottle, but very subdued. Little nose, smooth on the palate, but neither much fruit nor many secondary characteristics. I was definitely expecting more, especially since I carefully decanted about two hours before dinner. I will chalk it up to some sort of dumb stage and not open another bottle for a couple of years. Dark purple color with a nose of leather, meat, tobacco, and earth. Full-bodied on the palate with a meaty character displaying notes of dark cherry, cigar box, cowhide leather, cedar, and Saint Julien earth. Cruises on a high altitude with lively acidity. PnP but would have needed a serious decant and therefore no rating. Dark fruit, barnyard, sous bois - but it's all rather muted as the wine is fairly closed and austere after opening. Some wood on the mid-palate. Medium tannins.

Slow-O 2 hrs, served at cellar temp. Vibrant aromas of mixed floral, red and black berries, brown sugar and cacao nib, with flavors largely following to the full(-) bodied palate. Having just entered its drinking window, the fruits and acids are in sync, and with just a few more years of bottle rest, some really interesting tertiary development will no doubt begin to evolve, but for now, while it's highly enjoyable, it's not overly interesting. Give it 3-5 more years. Very good. 13% abv, drink thru 2021

Always a lesson in how wine is alive and no two bottles on different days are the same. Tracking a case of these and last tasting was 18 months ago an brilliant. This time the brilliance turned dumb, maybe. Was very flat, austere and perhaps just traditional in not giving much in taste and texture. Hoping it is transitioning from youthful exuberance to complex maturity right now. Cocooned and soon to blossom (I hope)

Decanted an hour before dinner. this bottle seemed a bit tight, and could use another year or two in the cellar. Clenched nose of cherries and other red fruit, with some smoke and a bit of funk. medium bodied. I got the same Welches Grape Juice note I detected previously; this brought me back to fond memories of childhood, but others might find it a bit too primary. This is a nice wine, and although it is enjoyable to drink today, it will be better in a couple of years, IMO.

The nos is very elegant and very St. Julien, the colour is amazingly young, in the aftertaste the wine is balanced, but in the middle I'm missing some meat; there the body cannot give enough. Still a very nice wine, à point, and don't look for the Léoville-Las Cases resemblance.

A little corky on opening; might suffer from some TCA taint, but not so overwhelming as to be clearly corked.
Cassis, raspberry, graphite and leather. Tannins continue to provide structure, but do not overwhelm the palate. My declining score over the past 3 bottles going back to 2009 reflects a decrease in "improvement with age" potential. I think this pretty much is what it is, and while not necessarily in decline, is not going to explode with secondary aromatics and complexity.

Takes along time to wake up, at least two hours. You then find a powerful fruit driven wine which only bears a slight resemblance to lasscases. Complex wine which is let down a little by a lack of subtlety

Retail purchase, held 4 years. Aromas continue to be the best expression of this 2000, and they don't disappoint now. That said, one of the attractive elements in the nose is also a reflection of relatively young and/or slightly underripe vines, which preserve the acidity and help longevity, even if you don't ever really achieve the depth of flavor, power, and expression you get with the 2000 Leoville Las Caeses. This continues to be fresh, lively, well dileneated, and a good food wine, but clearly shorter, not as deep. Having just tasted the 2011 en primeur, it is instructive to taste this one. Nice wines worth the tariff, but not sure they completely benefit from holding for a decade.

decanted 5 hours before drinking and probably another hour before it woke up. when it did it was terrific. unlike other vintages of this wine there is nothing of Lascasses inthis, in fact, it is more pauillac like. this is a powerful, muscular wine with bags of stuffing which will last for decades. will probably be at least 5 years before it is at its peak.

Experience tonight was similar to that of vinobruin, la grappe and others. Decanted and consumed over 2 hours with little improvement over time. Coloring looks good, has some of the earthiness one would expects from Medoc, but it ends shortly thereafter. Flavors are all fruit, one-dimensional, with no tannin to speak of. Lots of cherry, and a slight sourness on the brief finish. Don't know if this was an off bottle, but its not what some have positively experienced.

Drank from 375 after 3 hour decant. Good front and mid palate, not a big finish. Wine almost seemed a little shut down. Inky purple (no browning) but tannins seemed to be gone. By color it seemed to be very youthful. My hope is the wine is just going through a "dumb" stay and will emerge soon. Very nice and appealing nose with classic merlot based wine characteristics. Had with a 99 Monbousquet. After first glass I blended some of the Monbousquet and the combination made a much more appealing wine. The Monbousquet had very gripping tannins.

Beautiful st. Julian. Medium bodied, fruit driven wine with silky tannins(slightly rough but mellows, in the decanter) medium finish with nice cheery at the back palate.

Not sure how much I like this. The fruit is quite concentrated, but there is rather a bitter edge to the flavour. The 'cigar box' element is evident, but there is rather more box than cigar; ie it's a bit woody. Perhaps it needs time to harmonise and mellow (5 years maybe), but for now it is a touch aggressive and lacks charm.

was wrong with notes from about a year ago on this. opened to a very shy nose and quiet structure. but gave it 5-7 hours and it blossomed into a silky, dark but subtle cherry liquor stunner. very happy with where this wine is heading with time

Dark red, wonderful nose. Slowly evolving Bordeaux nose: a bit of barnyard, then coffee, smoke, lead pencil and blackberries. Rich and balanced with a long finish ending in solid but integrated tannins. What a bargain now, when purchased as a future years ago. ($28/ bottle in case quantities then)

Just OK after opening, a couple of hours later it showed quite an improvement. A couple of years ago, I noticed some Brett, but not in this bottle. Still showing enough tannin and structure to suggest further improvement.

Rich, lots of fruit; closed at first but opened up after 2 hours. Kept under Vacuvin for 2 days and it had softened beautifully; harmonious and delicious.

Happy belated bday to me - and it's a BIG one with this developing, slowly aging beauty. Opened and decanted for three hours except for initial swirly swirl. That one was tight and bright cherry tangy with an enticing nose of true bourdeaux fruit - cassis, expresso, some pencil shavings and oh la la, wonderful cigar wrappings - it's a classic in the making. After three or so hours the richness of the expresso and some big stoney graphite starts to come out full force. It has a laserlike intensity in the flavor profile. Mid palate fleshes out the best, with some beef fat au jus mixed with latte creaminess and deep rich claylike soil with a big mouthfeel of a finish, easily 30 seconds. Yep, as an original $30 futures grab this big boy don't get any better.

TN: 2000 Bordeaux Second Labels (all the First Growths +): Inky purple in color. Very tight at first, but opened quickly to cassis and leather. Soft texture. Cassis but not as complex as I would have thought. Not sure it gets better so I would drink these.

First time experience with this wine. Wine was drunk over 2 days. Opened and poured. The wine was as dark as night -- looking more like an '06 Napa cab -- and I was anticipating some explosive fruit out of the glass. Nope. This bottle showed a lot of restraint. It took a minute or two of serious swirling to get some cherry, cocoa, and a bit of licorice on the nose. On the palate, the fruit was mostly blackberries, oak, and tobacco. Again, the flavors were restrained. Medium-bodied. Tannins were nicely integrated. I prefer the '00 Langoa Barton at this stage.

Pop and pour. Wow, this has clearly entered the drinking window. All the flavors are there, but are not delivered among fruit intensity. Lovely in an older school claret sense. I would say 90, but a really tasty 90 point rating.

nice wine. pretty bright red purple color. opens to pretty aromas of crushed stones and bing cherries. flows with grace and great elegance with chocolate milk and silky finish. but almost a little too feminine and surprised didn't see much structure left to this. expected a little more foundation and am wondering about my remaining case and the age to drink. probably now.

2000 St. Julien Tasting Dinner (5 wines) (New Buffalo, Michigan): First time trying this wine. An unofficial 2nd wine of Leoville Las Cases (it is made from a seperate vineyard and not from the grapes that go into the Las Cases). 3 hour decant. Low sediment. The tannins were more approachable than most of the 10 bordeaux we had. A refined and feminine wine. Notes of saddle leather, cocoa and an herbal character on the finish. 92 points.

Definitive Bordeaux (Mirabelle Restaurant Austin, Texas): In magnum, decanted for three hours. Smooth, bright, good aromatics, fruits and minerals, might be the best LLC second yet. We found lilac, brown sugar, dark cranberry, slate, blackberry flavors--almost a maple chocolate milk character, which was quite tasty. Yes, this 2000 Leoville sibling drinks well now, and should improve for awhile. It was our group's favorite 2000 Leoville as it thought the favorite should be the wine that drinks well now (I dissented), and it was two other groups' least favorite among a compelling group of Leovilles, as they tasted out into the future.

Tasted blind - My other wine of the night. Clear and ruby in color. Powerful aromas of black cherry, cassis and spice. Medium to full bodied, with black cherry flavors, persisting on the finish. Look forward to enjoying this again and again.

Decanted for an hour -- deep egglplant color, wonderfully complex bouquet with noticeable mint scent. This wine is already rich and complex with deep, black fruit, but I recommend holding for at least a couple more years. This wine could develop into a monster, and I wish I had more.

This bottle was much better than the first a few months ago. Regal purple color. Nice nose of red fruit. Medium weight in the mouth with perfect balance. Finished with a slight note of Welch's red grape juice, which I loved as a kid. Drinking well now, but plenty of positive evolution ahead.

Score based more on expected potential than results at this point in time.. Popped and poured. Big mistake, but I rarely know what I want to drink until it is time to do so. Deep eggplant color with only a hint of aroma or palate. A brick wall of tannin. No noticable flaws. Wait 5 years before next bottle.

Decanted about 1 1/2 hours and had with grilled steaks. Purple/garnet, showing some age. Lovely bouquet of cassis, oiled leather, pencil lead. Medium, supple body. Some black cherry and herbs on the palate as well. Tannins still evident but smooth. This is rich and well-balanced, and drinking just great right now.

Lunch with George at "Cellier Bistrot" (Athens - Greece). A really big wine! Saturated ruby color and scents of wet earth, wood, charcoal, ripe red fruits and oaky vanilla. Medium to full bodied on the palate, offers flavours of wild cherries, blueberries, roast sesame, bitter almond, tar and roast chestnuts. Quite long finish. Excellent pairing with papardelle with saffron and prosciutto.

Nose: Notes of olive, black fruits and some alcohol. A hint of licorice
Color: Dark ruby core, garnet color on the edge
Although it is still a bit tannic, much of the tannins have been resolved whem compared with the few bottles I tasted nearly 1.5 years ago. Much more ready to drink now. Medium to full bodied, offering much more stuffing on the attack and offering depth in the mid palate that is dominated by ripe black berries and sweet bell pepper. Ample fruit in the mid palate and aftertaste, there is sufficient acidity to keep the wine fresh tasting. The finish lasts almost 30 seconds. I'm impressed with what it is delivering now and don't see any reason to not open up a bottle or two right now if you happen to have some lying in your cellar. Good juice!

Decanted about an hour. This has really opened back up since the last time I had it about a year ago or a little more. Color is deep velvet, and fully opaque. Nose is full of graphite, lead pencil with cassis and a hint of dark plum. A little wood, cedar, on the palate, with a hint of black pepper. Dark fruits, plum and dark cherry, dominate. Tannins are plush and smooth. Glad this isn't the last bottle, but agree that it probably is ready to be fully consumed over the next 5 years; might last a little longer without significant decline, but doubt it would evolve to the positive past that point.

Smelled and tasted almost the same as 2 years ago when I first tasted it. Dark ruby-purple.Knock-out nose with black cherry, creme de cassis, cedar, herbs, licorice and hints of graphite, continuously evolving with aeration. Mid-bodied with intense but tasty tanins, bright fruit and high acidity. Very long finish. A textbook in elegance, harmony and balance. Excellent. 95 then and 95 now. Drink now and over the next 10 years. Second vin of Leoville Las Cases.

Based on Neal Mollen's thread on this wine on EBob, I opened the second bottle from my case. Had I not read the thread, I would have called this still shut down, a little too austere, and with a touch of Brett. So either the ten bottles I have left are all going to be disappointments, or holding them for a couple more years will make a world of difference -- I'll vote on the second choice. Underneath enough structure and interest to warrant the score.

2nd wine of Leoville Las Cases. Having been on a run of mediocre wines for quite a while now, I was a little scared when I first smelled and put this in my mouth (having just opened it) - while delicious, it seemed thin and low on the aromatics. However, after being open for an hour this really opened up. All the characteristic notes of true Bordeaux - warmth, spiced wood, rich slightly sweet (but not SWEET) dark fruit, a slight tobacco edge (though not as much as in some). Very good acidity, nice and mouthwatering. Noticeably lacks the power of better wines, but lovely to drink, and a pretty impressive finish. Mouthfeel is pretty smooth - tannins soft and calm. Personally, I'd drink these up over the next 5 years - this doesn't feel worthy of the long-haul.

Stood up and decanted as there was a fair bit of sediment. Deep red, almost purple color with a great "Bordeaux" nose. A medium to full bodied wine it was a bit disjointed with understated fruits and smooth tannins. A very good wine, but things just seemed a bit out of place, perhaps it needs another 2 - 3 years . . .

Tasted side by side with the 2001 Clos du Marquis (90) this thick wonderfully aromtic cherry vanilla phosphate is filled with fruit as it caresses the mouth. Deep purple and concentrated the cassis and red and black fruit uphold the validity that 2000 across the Bordeaux board made wines of the century.

This had a real green streak when first opened; the second night it is showing much better with suave fruit, soft tannins and a decent finish. I don't see this as a blockbuster (had hopes due to the vintage) and it has cemented my doubt about the worthiness of buying seconds labels...both Carruades, Les Forts and Clos have left me less than thrilled with the goods delivered.

Reasonably forward, more or less ready having thrown quite a heavy sediment; a deep colour, with blackcurrants, plums and spice on the nose; a full, rich, slightly chewy palate and good length; may yet become more harmonious.

A nose a flavor of black olives mixed with damp earth and tobacco. A rather thin wine on the palate that left me wanting more depth, flavor and intensity. I don't see this as a wine with much room for improvement and would suggest drinking over the next 5-7 years; it pairs decently with prime rib, but a richer meal will overpower the flavors in the glass.

Ton of sediment on the cork and in the neck of the bottle. Beautiful eggplant color, clear throughout. Delicious dark fruit, berries and cassis and slight barnyard. All still primary flavors. A little hollow on the mid-palate. Hopefully this will flesh out as the wine puts on more age.

Bought in Feb 2008, held for 5 months. Cork in great shape, decanted with only light sediment adhering to the shoulder and base... nice deep red/blue color. Complex nose of Bordeaux typicity, wafting aromatics of black currant, dark berry, loamy floor, and mushroom. A nice, ample-bodied wine that does not punish a big pull with harsh tannins or high burn (13% alcohol). Long finish, and great with a meal. At $70 on the secondary market, it is a good value for the 2000 vintage (and a great one if you've held since $25 release!), but compared to recent 05's which show even better fruit, it is not a slam dunk. That said, it will reward lovers of St. Julien wines now and over the next 10 years.

This was fine with nice earth and mineral. There was tobacco, currants, and it was of a good medium body. It was also somewhat delicate and reticent. With 5 to 10 more years, it will be a much more complete wine.

my fault again for opening a baby, but i have several of these and wanted to see where it stands now. primary fruits are there but really no secondary maturation to speak of. cedar, smokey, graphite, coffee, blackberry all present but seemingly subdued - still shut down some? wood slightly out of balance. palate is nice and full. finish's a little short right now. will get better in a couple of years as it comes out of slumber.

Montreal Monster Wine Tasting @ Chez Christophe; 10/26/2007-10/27/2007: Nose of freshly brewed coffee and oak. Palate is surprisingly approachable for a 2000 bdx with more coffee, pencil shavings, plumand cedar nose hiding the fruit. Long, tangy finish. Well balanced wine and quite enjoyable.

Just singing with a grilled strip steak. Still a deep red/purple color. Aromas are mostly fruity but with a bit of smoke/cedar just starting to creep in. While on its own it's still a bit tough, it was sublime with the steak, blossoming into something much more refined and effusive.

No notes taken, but this was great with a grilled New York Strip at the Sawchuk's. Double decanted about seven hours before serving. The color was a deep red. The nose was surprisingly expressive with dark fruit, tobacco, earth, and a slightly annoying band-aid smell that seemed to come and go. The taste was excellent -- giving dark fruit in a lush style with excellent balance, silky tannins, and a long satisfying finish. I'm surprised how tasty this is at this stage in its development.

Beautiful dark ruby colour. Powerful nose with lots of plum, earth, and tobacco. Still very (too) high acidity and strong but velvety tannins. Bold attack but very nice length. Unfortunately not only the plums and tobacco notes last but also some adstringent bitterness. Not quite there yet. Besides the high rankings of peers, the biggest hope about this wine are the nose and the velvety tannins. If smoothness, fruit, and spices continue to develop, the pleasure will be big after 2010.But caution: this wine may be overrated.

Drank with John and Jen at Superbowl party. I think this is simply too young to drink now and get the best out of... you can tell this will be a lovely balanced wine in a few years. On the nose classic bordeaux- rich red and black fruit, a touch of leather and that play doh roundness fo fruit but all very clean and refined. On the palate a lovely smooth rounded wine. Wait a while and I think this will be a lovely classy wine.

Hints of that green Bordeaux bouquet that I quite dislike are present, but that is all forgotten once the one leaves the glass. Suprisingly sillky tannins in the mouth - especially across the tongue. A bit more meat to the tannins in the mouth. Medium to full-bodied. More intense / fruit forward than I would have expected, but a nice balance against the tannins. Typical Bordeaux flavors, but still a bit covered up by the tannins. Should evolve very nicely. Leave the other bottles for another 2-3 years

EXCEPTIONAL Super-Second! Today, this wine is drinking beautifully. Everything is in proportion; tannins, acidity, fruit, it's all there. This wine was not decanted, but removed from the cellar and immediately opened and poured. On opening the bouquet was anise and strawberry, and only slightly sharp. After 20 minutes in the glass, WOW! The 2000 vintage of this wine is the sort that makes one get excited all over again about Bordeaux futures in great vintages. And in great vintages like 2000, Clos du Marquis is an excellent value. Personally, I cannot afford to stock up on Leovilles Las Cases in great vintages, but this wine is a top-notch QPR, in my opinion. I'm looking at the 2005's now!

Excellent! This level of wine is something I am unaccustomed to. It was extremely smooth and light. My palate picked up that it was very elegant, yet I am not able to use descriptive adjectives at this point in my wine experience. I am more used to wines with more "flavor" which is probably interpreted as "bite" to those with more knowledge. Gosh I love learning.

Initially nose was a little off-putting, but it blew off after 30 minutes. Nose gives of the impression of deep concerated dark brooding fruit. Explodes in the mouth on first contact with lots of dark cherry and blueberry flavors with lots of fine tannins. The finish goes on forever. Can't wait to see the LLC based on this second.

2000 Clos du Marquis Bordeaux St Julien

Graphite.
Smells like 10ys ago when i had a very good bottle (abt 94pt.)
First sips short restrained but pure no cork...phew!
Healthy acid, good balance. Mid weight and mid length.
Gets better at least over 2hrs.
Better stored bottles/ Mgs should go up a notch or two.
Nice/ very good
Ready, will hold a while

Slightly better than the '99 we just had but awfully similar. Nose is classic Bordeaux with dark fruits, cigar box and cassis. It has quite a bit of sense of place but lacks some extraction to give it more depth and structure. Aside from tannins being quite mellow, there's not many signs of development. I don't know if more time will do this any good. It's in a good stage right now.

Which evolved to "don't pour me any more."
Now to click and read what everyone else says.

The flavours are as the nose promises. Dry, barely medium-length finish; a pretty decent Bdx, not unripe, although trading a bit on the LLC connection probably.

Bummer.

Dazzling. Pure and clean in the glass with minimal sediment. Strawberry, cherry, and a hint of spice. Despite an extraordinary nose it was a tad two dimensional however.

Cellartracker Heathens! This wine is exceptional…

This is claret well and cleanly done and deeply satisfying and not scaled to unreasonable expectations. I did not detect a lot of change after decant and it was well paired with a hanger steak and fingerling potato. By points it looks like this: 5+12+16+8

Dark ruby garnet color and still pretty tightly wound up. Evolved nicely over time with notes of tobacco and cedar on the nose. Dark fruit and berry flavors with a bit of earth. Needs more time but this one is really well put together.

very nice. opened for 3 hours, but not decanted. cherries, cassis, touch of tobacco, spice, cedar. Balanced and still just a touch of age- but drinking very well at the same time

From memory, a fairly unmemorable wine. Clean fruit etc but a bit subdued... perhaps worth leaving for a while.

Poured directly and did not decant this time...nice fruits as noted with definite anise/asphalt overtone that is not unpleasant. Not jumping out of the glass, may be a bit sleepy...although not a long term prospect, needs a couple of more years

Classic, earth-driven, rich young Bordeaux notes of pencil shavings, tobacco, coffee, mushrooms, and black fruits. Medium-bodied, and showing restraint on the palate. Clipped on the finish by slightly grainy tannins. Ripe, but never heavy, and quite good.

I really like this. Dark black cherry color to the rim. Nose of licorice, black cherry and maybe plum. Plenty of tannin but not off putting. Opened with method Audouze.

Opened but not decanted. Ruby color and aromas of plum, some oak(?) and licorice. Tannins were a bit edgy but fruit is present. Decanting might balance it more. Will need a couple of years to reach its peak. Not as big and decadent as the 00 LLC but great QPR. Love it!

Big, spicy, herbal with a mouthful of tannins. Hard to sip, needs to find a good grill and some red meat.

decanted, lovely fruit and balance, plenty of tannins, some volatility in the midpalate and finish..day 3; seems to have fallen apart, stemmy herbaceous tones are dominant...don't see this as a long term prospect, narrow drinking window; reduce score from 92 to 90
