  • Drank at the Sarasota Commanderie partager event. Beautifully integrated wine with all the parts in absolutely the right place. Still bright pauillac notes alongside the dark fruit and hints of tar and pencil, medium+ finish. Starting to show some secondary characteristics but nothing tertiary yet. Amazing bottle but I felt it to be a bit softer than I was expecting.

  • Bob’s bottle. A beautiful wine which has left its exuberant primary phase behind and entered its early secondary phase. Deep ruby. The bouquet is still trying to make up its mind since it no longer is bursting with cherry berries and is developing earth, expresso and olive notes. We could see the family resemblance to the dazzling ‘61 version. “Mouton je suis.”

  • At selby’s - could have used more time in decanter. Nose was complex and touch of ocean and smoke. Soft and velvety on the pallette, a bit reserved but very enjoyable.

  • Mouton Rothschild Vertical: Finally drank the iconic 2000 bottle after drinking so many vintages of Mouton. Pronounced nose intensity with notes of chocolate, coffee, vanilla, violet, toast and spices. Medium+ acidity and medium+ tannin. Did not decant. Pop and pour. Just entered its drinking window with potential to improve.

  • Reserved in character, at close to 24 years old, the wine doesn’t offer the flamboyant character the best vintages of Mouton provides. Instead, you find a more austere, classic rendition of Pauillac with a focus on its bright currant, cedar, cigar wrapper and spicy profile. Concentrated and firm on the palate, 1-2 hours of air will help the wine in your glass. Drink from 2023-2055.

  • Nutty, saline aromatics. Ultra tight palate.

  • Nose: Cedar, black fruits, ripe red fruits
Notes: Drank from a magnum. Such a lovely nose and an excellent and deep structure. This further confirms that this might be the best Mouton made in the past 60 years, beating the 82 and 86 which may, in many occasions, be a bit tired or passed it prime already by now. What's amazing about this wine is consistently great over the past 10 years on several occasions that I had it and it continues to promise enormous potential. The nose is deep, seductive and intriguing. This could withstand time and it's certainly just a teenager now at most.

  • Tasted the 2000 from a double magnum. Bottle comes from a perfect cellar. Typical Mouton nose: mint, cassis, leather, pencil. Still very young due to the format of the bottle, but with well-integrated and well-developed tannins. I would easily give this wine another 10 years, even more in larger formats. However, the price of the Mouton 2000 is not justified in my eyes - the vintage and the special bottle play a major role in the price and not the wine itself. There are wines that can do just as much, if not more, at a fraction of the price... All in all, a very nice wine experience.

  • Holiday Champagne Gala (Park Ridge Country Club): Small glass. Massive and powerful with lots here, just not giving much pleasure right now. Needs time, great potential.

  • Countryside Relaxation with a finish in Paris; 9/9/2022-9/11/2022 (Mâcon region, France): Textbook nose, dark, brooding, very Mouton. Cigar. Palate is still very locked up, balanced, powerful, many years to go.

  • The nose is amazing and I couldn't stop smelling it. As others have said, soft on the palate, but wonderful full mouthfeel.

  • Really took many hours to reveal itself. More polished and softer than I would have expected but there are still cagey/epic tannins lurking in behind. Very fresh and vibrant in a lighter-than-usual Mouton style. Give it another 5-10 years.

  • Slow Ox'd for a few hours and consumed over lunch for an hour or two. Fantastic and big Mouton nose and soft on palate and finish. I see polarizing reviews on this wine but I found it to be in a great spot with plenty of life left.

  • Dégustation de 24 millésimes de Mouton Rothschild

    2000

DO NOT TOUCH ! C'est pas prêt du tout !
Très jeune, très tannique, plein de matière, plutôt simple pour le moment car rien est en place mais lorsque le tout sera harmonisé nous aurons fort probablement droit à un énorme vin ! Attendre encore 10-15 ans.

  • Bordeaux 2000 - 20 Years On - 48 Reds: All tasted blind, not decanted. Observations: 1) It´s a good vintage but not on par with more recent great vintages like 09/10/15/16. Why? A smaller group of top wines reaching lower highs and in general a tad less depth, purity and finesse. 2) Right bank is ready, the left bank still needs time to integrate and open up. 3) Not much tertiary aromas yet - peak drinking window at least 10 years away for most wines. 4) 2000 is a bit a cooler vintage which is great for the right bank (not too much ripeness). 5) Winners? Pomerol with the highest ratings. Le Pin (97+ pts) leading the pack for me (narrowly beating the consensus winner Pavie (97 pts).

More information, top and worst 10 lists, appellation rankings, out- and underperformer from five participants in the story link. As always, in such tastings (lots of wines, not a lot of time per wine, not decanted) the ranking of wines/appellations might be more informative than the scores.

TN: Rather muted nose with dark fruits and minerality, not sparking much joy. On the palate this is elegant and soft, lots of red and dark berries, well defined and medium+ to very intense and dense. The structure is marked by soft tannins, a med+ and well-integrated acidity, a fresh and slightly creamy texture and feel. A highlight is the very long finish but overall the wine - at least at this stage - doesn’t have enough depth to play among the best wines of the vintage. Maybe a long decant would have helped to reveal more but on the other hand, this is not one of the wines you drink and instantly feel and know that there is much more there than currently showing.

Decanting: I would go for a long decant (3-4+ hours?)

  • Purchased upon release and stored in my locker at the WineSellar & Brasserie. Decanted and drank two hours later. Highly acidic, no fruit, and resolved tannins. After 20 years of impeccable storage this was a huge disappointment. Had a bottle 5 years ago, and this was comparable. The bottle is beautiful, but not the wine.

  • Grand Bordeaux 2000 horizontal tasting; 6/20/2021-6/21/2021: Grand Bordeaux 2000 tasting with ~60 wines from the vintage hosted by a private collector. All wines were poured directly from the bottle with no decant and served in flights of 4. As general observations I would highlight: 1/ Today the 2000 is, without a doubt, a right bank vintage with Pomerol the star, 2/ the vast majority of wines are still going strong with hardly any past their peak 3/ On the left bank, St Estèphe was most ready to drink with a lot of wines in a closed stage right now, 4/ On the left bank, 2nd to 4th growths were generally more open for business than the 1st growths which almost all closed, only hinting at their full potential. 5/ If you must open a left bank bottle, Margaux is the safest place to look. Complete scoring overview and additional commentary included in the tasting story.

    Tasting note:
Lots of detail and precision even if not overly expressive. Sweet red berry fruit, just a bit of leather. After a closed start, this opened up quickly adding more aging notes (tobacco) and refinement. Pretty harmonious palate with well integrated tannin, but not showing too much character at this stage. The weakest of the 3 Paulliac first growths. Looking back to the last bottle I had about 2 years ago it seems there hasn't been much evolution since.

  • Tannins did not let this wine shine tonight. I would like to reevaluate in 8-10 years. At 3 hours, started to fill in a bit. This has potential, yet requires patience! Drink 2030-42.

  • Drank from a bottle opened five nights previously. The 1996 Lafite held up magnificently. This Mouton, I'd rate 93 on taste and much higher for the nose. But since it was opened so much earlier, I'm probably not experiencing its best.

  • Still very tight. It needs time to open up. A little disappointed with wine ,we had at Hobbit in orange along with a 1999 Lafite-Rothschild. We felt Lafite Rothschild was better.

  • The 2000s - Two Decades On @ Jake's!: Aside from the Cristal 2000 and DP P2 2000, we drank the following 2000s side by side - Mouton, Lafite, Lalande, Sassicaia, Solaia & Tignanello.

Very generous of the host to open this tonight as the prices for this bottle is prohibitive. This was the softest Bordeaux tonight. In fact, I guessed this to be the Lalande. Black fruits, cherries, leather, tobacco leaves, truffles, incense, spices and black tea notes on the finish. Quite firm and structured. Balanced with chewy tannins. This is probably the most feminine Mouton that I have ever had. Composed of 86% cabernet sauv and 14% merlot. Great showing today! Open up. Ranked 3/6 for me tonight and ahead of the Solaia 2000 as this had more purity of fruits.

  • A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (86%) and Merlot (14%). Aged for approximately 20 months in new French oak barriques. 12,5% alcohol.

Luminous, somewhat translucent and still surprisingly youthful, dark ruby-red color. Brooding, somewhat restrained nose with understated aromas of blackcurrants and black cherries, some perfumed and slightly phenolic notes of exotic spice along with a subtly leathery nuance – might there be a touch of brett here? – that segue into subtle aromas of slightly green-toned herbal notes, a little bit of succulent plummy fruit, an oaky hint of mocha coffee and a touch of chocolate chips. The wine is intense, harmonious and quite full-bodied yet not particularly big or concentrated on the palate with layered flavors of ripe blackcurrants, some fresh cherries, a little bit of crunchy redcurrants, light woody notes of savory oak spice, subtly bretty hints of phenolic spice and leather and a sweeter touch of toasty mocha oak. The overall feel is balanced and quite structured with the high acidity and supple yet firm medium tannins. The finish is very long, quite intense and savory with complex flavors of fresh blackcurrants and sweeter black cherries, some tobacco, light brambly notes of red and black raspberries, a little bit of exotic spices and phenolic peppery character, oaky hints of woody cedar and bittersweet dark chocolate and a touch of leathery funk. The tannins lend a quite gently gripping note to the aftertaste.

A still remarkably youthful and even slightly closed vintage of Mouton Rothschild that is stylistically very balanced and harmonious, but also quite polished - up to the point of being remarkably sophisticated, but devoid of any character. Fortunately there's this slightly phenolic edge of almost smoky spices and leather that lends a nice, subtly rustic counterpoint to the otherwise very smooth and glossy overall feel of the wine. I do admit that this is a fine wine by all accounts, but in a tasting of fourteen 2000 Bordeaux wines, this didn't leave a particularly lasting impression. While this particular wine might be a wonderful effort on its own, it really didn't manage to stand head and shoulders taller above the other wines, despite being the only 1er Cru Bordeaux in the lineup. Fortunately the wine has time on its side: despite its 20 years of age the wine is still remarkably youthful and even somewhat closed at this point; I can imagine it will pick up some points as it opens, evolves and develops some tertiary complexity over the years. But while the wine might keep for decades more, it feels like it is never going to be the grand vin many expect it to be. Compared to how remarkable 2000 Bordeaux wines one can get at the fraction of what this particular wine costs, I really can't say this wine delivers for the price.

  • Time to Taste 2000 Bordeaux (R&D's): Blind. Similar color to the previous wines with a deep garnet core and slightest bricking at the meniscus. Aromas of earth, black fruit, tobacco and embers. As it opens in the glass this develops aromas of red fruit and leather. Fairly firm tannins with flavors of red fruit, earth, cigar tobacco and black currants. Has a subtle asphalt note that had me thinking this could be Graves as well. 95-96 pts. Bigger than wine B, so I guessed La Mission Haut Brion.

  • I concur with other reviewers, that this wine is still young and needs more years of bottle age. Having said that, and looking through the fact that it is not fully showings its stuff, I would not say this is anymore than a sold Bordeaux. Its definitely not worth $2,000. I would go for Smith Haut Lafitte, just as good and reasonably affordable.

  • Dark blackish ruby garnet colored, medium full bodied, complex but balanced and polished with black fruits accented by smoky cedar, violet, kirsch, coffee and notes of mocha, floral, spice and oak with elegant silky tannins on the lingering finish.

  • Dark ruby, black cherry, plum, dried blueberry, ripe, dense, dry earth, meat, bark, moss, bell pepper, green peppercorn, dried roses, vanilla, coffee. Quite tight, needs time, medium plus acidity, medium alcohol, medium plus body, medium plus tannin, high level of complexity, long finish, structured yet creamy and plush. Drinking very well but will improve for 10+ years.

  • Mouton Rothschild vertical 1878-2002 (Old Swiss House, Lucerne): Riper fruit than other vintage, a bit of menthol and fresh herbs. Not overly complex I found when compared to the other vintages – especially when considering what a great vintage 2000 was.

  • Mouton Vertical (Lucerne): There is a lot of potential here, the wine is very dense and powerful but young and not yet revealing all there is. It did open up a bit in the glass but a longer decant would have probably done wonders. Too bad, the organizers didn‘t do that. I wouldn‘t open the wine yet, it needs some more years. 94 points for all the potential and the level of precision of what shone through.

TN: Not overly expressive on the nose with dark cool fruit and a lot of rocks, iron minerality at the forefront. Clean and quite sharp. Voluptuous and dense on the palate but with a subpar balance at the moment. The structure with round, smooth but noticeable tannins, all the power is currently dominating suppressing the many layers of aromas which for sure are there.

Decanting: Double decant & slow-ox for 3 hours. Not a good decision for this young, packed wine. I would give it a long decant (4+ hours at least) but better wait for more tertiary aromatics to develop.

  • Deep purple color with no signs of brown on the rim. Bouquet and flavor of cassis with some tobacco. Rather closed despite airing, with less nuance and depth that I had expected. Moderate finish. This wine went through Hurricane Katrina, which may have had an unfavorable effect.

  • cheers - decanted 2 hours and drank side by side with a 1976 Lafite. Delicious with aged rib-eye, and continued to open up; unfortunately, we finished the bottle in 90 minutes and it was still getting better....fortunately, I have 2 more and I will try to wait a few more years before the next one. A classic wine.

  • Occasional dinner group; Bordeaux 2000 (@ Merlet): Almost the end of the tasting and just limited notes. Very luxurious bouquet with dark berries, beautiful oak and cedar. Same on the palate. Juicy dark fruits, beautiful acidity and still youthful tannin. Very beautiful wine already and still a lot of potential.

  • Destined for greatness with an elegance in its youth which should not be confused for lack of substance. It is not the brooding behemoth you might expect. But all the moving parts are in place and will gradually interact to turn this into a stunning Mouton, which will gain in complexity and may even move the game on a bit from the 20th century legends. It also compares favourably to the desperately awkward 2005. Ironically the character of this wine is so out of whack with the gauche and kitsch engraved label. Over time the score will inevitably go higher than this snapshot of a teenage potential legend in the making.

  • Mouton Rothschild Vertical Dinner (Vaucluse): Ripe and robust nose with a wallop of exotic spice. The first impression is hot Cabernet, but this becomes more approachable with more time and swirling. Big blackberry palate, dense and rich. Classic cassis concentration. Mouton terroir actually manages to some through with faint sings of the lead pencil and forest floor. Black olive. Surprised by the forwardness here (after three hours in the glass) but overall this is a monster right now, built for extended range. 96+ point potential.

  • Really deep and rich. Beef blood. Spice and leather. Cassis and graphite. A ton of structure here. This is good but in all honesty still probably too young to be fully enjoyed. This has a ton of upside. Good acidity and fruit. Nice balance with loads of concentration.

  • AHA Heart's Delight Vintners Dinner - Mouton Rothschild (Washington DC - Mellon Auditorium): Drank this from a magnum (so it will have aged more slowly).

Classic cellar stinky nose - although it had been double decanted it continued to improve over an hour - definitely give this some more decanting.

  • Mouton dinner with Philippe Dhalluin and Bernard Burtschy (Taberna del Alabardero, Washington D.C.): Expressive nose displaying creme de cassis, surprisingly a good amount of red fruit, raspberry jam, plum, roasted nuts, coffee, lead pencil, and a hint of green and cedar. Sparingly harmonious palate compare to a few years ago when the wine felt slightly disjointed or overwhelming, beautifully layered, good acidity, nicely integrated tannins and a long seamless finish. It is hard to believe that this is already 17 years old. This is coming together nicely, lost the youthful opulence but became polished and harmonious. It is already enjoyable but can improve for another decade or two. Really nice showing.

  • After the '73 & '93, this came across as the better wine. Cedar, blackcurrants, lead on the nose, with a lot of structure, dark-fruits, leather on the palate. Long finish, with the legs to still go the distance. Will definitely improve with more cellar time.

  • Make Bordeaux Great Again: The HDH Aubrey McClendon auction (Chicago, IL): From a hilariously large imperial. This is, without a doubt, a very large-scaled wine, with plenty of material that just isn't on display at this point in time. There are some restrained graphite notes, as well as some dark plums on the nose. The palate isn't showing too much at this point -- mostly just a dark and brooding character, though there are signs of good things to come (I won't prognosticate further on that though).

  • Started very strong with a powerful nose of dark fruit, pepper, stone, and spice. Delicate and racy midpalate. Complex and despite the power sophisticated. Great intensity palate staining flavor but not heavy. After 15 minutes this shut down and never fully regained. Needs more time.

  • Annual Comparative Bordeaux Tasting (2000/2005) (Chicago, IL): The nose on this is just amazing. I love the spice and tobacco notes, which follow through on the palate. I really like those herbal elements, but the palate comes off as a little too concentrated without enough freshness to keep things going. Obviously, a very dense and powerful wine, and very much more expressive than the 2005 right now. Mostly, it needs more time to unwind.

  • Slightly more developed after hours in the decanter, rich nose with ripe dark red fruit, slightly musky and cassis. Palate supple but not as developed as the nose, quite easy going and youthful will need a lot more time to gain complexity.

  • Time to Taste 2000 Bordeaux (R&D's): Single blind. Aromas of tobacco, saddle leather, black fruit, plum and herbs. Loads of black and red fruit on the palate. Firm, but approachable tannins. Develops aromas of incense, tar, perfumed florals, red and dark fruit. Flavors of red and dark fruit, tobacco and hints of coffee with an incredibly long, balanced finish. This isn't the most approachable wine here tonight, but it is certainly the most balanced and complete wine- lots going on and with terrific fruit, tannin and structure. 97+ pts. I guessed LMHB.

  • Really really amazing wine, very dense and elegant. Initially not too overpowering, but so many layers and so long. Great. Decanted it for one hour and the wine was more open then i expected.

This shows you that it's not too long ago that Bordeaux was making awesome dense and rich wines at 12.5% alcohol

  • Glowing and very dark in colour, maybe just the slightest hint of discolouration around the rim. Immensely expressive and complex nose with sweet fruit, creme de cassis, cherries, a hint of plums, dark chocolate, smoke, exotic spices. Still tight on the palate with firm grip, round tannins, fine acidity. There's loads of pure fruit, wonderfully balanced. The finish is enormous. Fantastic Mouton, just a little too young, but with a great future. 96-97+

  • Remarkably disappointing. Reading the other reviews here, I have to wonder if I got a fraudulent bottle -- but that seems highly unlikely given the special "millenial" engraved bottle it came in. This was stored in my cellar at perfect conditions -- mid-neck level still.

Briefly, there's a bit of depth and bass notes in the nose, but after that, very little to enjoy. Dried fruit with little depth, thin mouthfeel, dried out, short finish. It even has some of that rusty iron flavor that a lot of cheap and awful French wines have.

This is the third Mouton I've tasted, and none have been worth writing home about.

I've had many more interesting and more enjoyable wines for $13, and I think this one is worth $1700.00 on the current market. I guess we set ourselves up for disappointment with wines like this. Boy, I wish I had sold this bottle and taken a trip to Bordeaux instead!

  • Mouton Dinner (Ritz Chicago): Very forward, sweet ripe nose of sweet red and black fruit, caramel and oak. A serious mocha note emerged with more time in the glass. More floral as well. Layered on the palate a sleek, glossy and silky texture. This is like candy today and while it is very approachable, the deep rich ripe fruit will last a long time. Long, smooth finish.

  • Stunning full bodied beauty with layers of fruit, tobacco and chocolate. Not as refined as some of the leading wines from this vintage but that's because it's super concentrated with many years to go.

  • This wine did not live up to its reputation. Very sound but really tight both in the nose and the mouth. Wisps of dark fruit, pencil lead and smoke in the nose and ok mouth feel. By the end of the night started to open up (it was decanted 3 hours before dinner) and show some promise. Must need more time.

  • Hard to taste past the label. Four hour decant, with very significant sediment thrown. Bought on release and stored in a 60 degree cellar. Very expressive cabernet nose leads to a full bodied palate a little dominated by oak. It seems to lack the fruit on the palate that I would expect from a wine of this pedigree. Tasted along side with the '79 Haut Brion withChristmas dinner, the finesse was just not there at this point in time. I would expect a significant upside with this wine. Let it sleep in your cellar!

  • 96-97+..Excellent wine, the more I think about it the more I liked it.... was really excited to taste this and it was exactly what I was hoping for. Extremely refined, great depth, perfect balance. Very complex with earthy notes on the nose layered sweet fruits, red licorice, dark cherries, forest floor, cassis, a coffee component. Constantly picked up different aspects all working well for this beast of a wine. Great mouth feel overall, and lingering rich finish of veggies, earth again, and more fruit. Still tastes young, I bet this is an almost perfect wine in another 10 years. Big fan.

  • A huge wine. Tasted during the 2000 millenium horizontal tasting. I hesitated for quite a while among Angelus, Vieux Chateau Certan and Mouton, still, it was my WOFN. A nearly perfect wine, with typical Pauillac nose, those cedar, cigar box, black currents, pencil lead, complex and agressive. The full body and the structured tannins gave me a confidence to keep it for at least 30 years before open it.

  • I drank this as part of my 50th birthday bash. It was one of the flagship wines for the night. Still very young, it has started to evolve into its teenage years. Lots of wonderful fruit melding with the acidity and tannins. While it was very nice to drink, it didn't blow me away or give me one of those life moments. Considering how much it goes for on the auction market nowadays, it is nowhere near that good. I paid around $200 for it and it was fine for that price. This was the first 1st growth from a classic vintage I had ever tasted, and my hope was that it would show me what everyone is excited about. Alas, all it did was confirm to me that high end Bordeaux is just not my thing.

  • Friday after Thanksgiving (FAT) (Palm Beach Gardens FL): Tasting, brief note. Espresso, liqueur, dense/dark fruit aromas. Same flavor profile with great structural support and density, great length. Everything still firm and slightly backward but this is developing into a great wine. 96-97 points.

  • Friday after Thanksgiving II (Palm Beach Gardens, FL): Very streamlined, with few hard edges even now. Masculine, dark fruits. Kirsh and chocolate notes. Nice.

  • Acker Merrall BYO (Sepia - Chicago IL): Small taste. Big black fruit with liqueur aromas, dark chocolate, dark roasted coffee. Same big fruit on palate with very firm structure. Huge wine on finish.

  • Acker BYO - Chicago (Sepia - Chicago, IL): Off the charts. Nose soared with tobacco, cedar, dark fruit and smokey earth notes. Its palate was youthful with dark , spicy fruit yet it had an adolescent elegance to it that I wasn't prepared for. The body of the wine was massive...its flavors were perfectly in balance and it seemed the purest expression of Pauillac I could have imagined. Wow...this will be (more of a) legend in 10-15 years.

  • Chinese New Year (Home of Mike and Sandra O.): Not decanted, followed over several hours. No formal notes. Initially quite closed and saturated with roasted toasty oak notes. Eventually a very nice wine emerged, with a slightly nutty nose mixed in the black currants and leafy herbal notes. Palate was quite concentrated, very polished and balanced, and a leafy tobacco character that I’ve only ever picked up from Mouth and Ch. Margaux. Lengthy finish. Not really showing any Pauillac typicity to me and will need a lot more time to integrate all the oak. The Ducru and SHL were drinking better on this night, but this is certainly a well made wine, still quite closed, but has all the components to be great in 10yrs. HOLD 92-93

  • Another Saturday at Knightsbridge - mostly blind (Northbrook, IL): Tasted double blind. Pedigree stood out immediately. Massive black currant and cassis aromas. Big, masculine in every way, with dense black fruit flavors followed by wonderful spice. Bit of tobacco and lead pencil emerging. Thank you, David!

  • Dark, espresso grounds and cassis notes. Graphite. Dense, chewy, with masculine styling. Big wine - well structured but streamlined. Young but delicious. Nice.

  • Pauillac (semi blind) (Amsterdam Wijn Antiquariaat): Dark nearly black colour. Over-ripe fruits, multiple berries, cherries, Asian spices and sandalwood in the nose. Classic Pauillac and very elegant on the palate. Very powerful with chocolate, kirsch and mineral tones. For a long future.

  • Compared to the other first growths, this one lags a bit. Maybe it needs more time in cellar, but I believe the potential is not there.

  • Decanted. Opulent and complex nose. Dark fruits, spice and notes of stone. Incredible balance of fruit, tannin and acid. It kept evolving over the next three hours to reveal hints of tobacco, cranberry, roasted meat and blackberry. Medium long finish. Many years left in this vintage.

  • Espresso bean, Asian spice, crushed stone, mulberries, cassis and floral aromas make up the complex perfume. Luscious, rich, round and filled with plush, dark berries, this opulent, stylish Pauillac finishes with silky tannins, rich, spicy, dark berries. 5-10 more years will add a lot to this strong wine.

  • AMS Wijnantiquariaat (blind tasting) Bordeaux including Mouton 1981, 1998, 1999 and 2000. Very dark colour. Intense aromas in the nose like coffee ground, cigar box, cream, super-ripe fruits and some mint. Powerful and very dense mouth, full of ripe fruit tones and.. tannins. Long lingering finish. Needs time!

  • Decanted for three hours. Ripe and dark core with a lightening rim. A very elegant nose with some tobacco, blackberry, sage and chocolate cream pie. A nice and clean finish, with soft tannins. Well proportioned and echoes finesse. Outstanding, however, this is not what I expected considering the vintage and pedigree. It almost seems more like a '98 Mouton rather than a 2000. Still enjoyable and very approachable. Drink 2011 -2028.

  • 5 hour decanting, full bodied, great bouquet of fruit at first then opens to more oak near the finish

  • Smoke, herbs, cassis, espresso and Asian spice are easy to find in the perfume. The texture is soft, plush and round. But the wine lacks the same level of power, intensity and purity of the other top wines of the vintage.

  • Drink it 2 bottles within 3 days.

Same words. For me, Mouton is 2nd Growth but anyway, for Mouton's fan, this 2000 at this moment needs 8-10 hours to breath.

If not, new modern oaky, so simply, good structure wine, umm...delicious, good finished.

If yes, when oak has gone, very deep and beautiful scent of young Mouton and seductive, a bit modern and classic combination, Texture is getting fine, very good in balance, comes across the 1982. Becomes one of my favorite Mouton by the way.

Aftertaste is long and beautiful. ( 2003 is longer but rough ) Good promising wine. The next other day I drink it again with 1993 magnum in my family, good memory !!! We love it both...the best Mouton 1993 of my 15 times of testing. My others 3 bigger size should be more impressed, I hope.

Drink the 2000 now....you already know how to deal with it - 2050

  • This wine didn't perform well this time. The wine boost deep ruby color with oak dominated from the beginning. The fruits and acidity and other elements wasn't just right, may be not a good time for it. Tasted with 2003 Sceraming, 1999 Harlan, 1998 Ausone, 1993 La Tache. This wine finish last. I'm sure it will get better but with enormous time . Last glass was the best of it after 4-5 hours 94+++

  • Color was still dark and youthful. What captivated me most about this wine was the nose. Cassis, cedar, tobacco, and a hint of funkiness in the background. The palate was very similar the nose showing dark berries, tobacco, cedar, coffee, and smooth oak. The finish was focused and the length was adequate. Overall the aromas and flavors present, although complex were not ground breaking for the area. However where this wine excelled was in the purity and intensity of these nuances. In a word focus. It was everything I was expecting from a top notch producer from a great vintage and the best Pauillac I have had to date.

  • Tasting Of Chateau Mouton Rothschild (At The Wine Summit 2008 – Lake Louise, Alberta): 86% CS, 14% M ; I didn’t catch the Alc. Level;
Particularly dark – ruby, with a wide pinkish rim; medium deep aromas; some olive – slightly herbaceous note, but this vanishes on swirling – cedar comes through – some light smoke – then very focused and intensive black currant fruit; sweet entry - quite round on the palate; excellent concentration and extract – fine structure; intense black currant fruit – quite fresh, and this carries on with the acidity into a lengthy finish.

  • There were many amazing moments at the 2008 Post Hotel Wine Summit in Lake Louise Alberta Canada, but one of the highlights was a standing room only technical tasting of nine vintages from Chateau Mouton Rothschild. The charismatic and entertaining Adrien Laurent, North American Export Manager for Baroness Rothschild led us through this barrage of big Bordeaux and explained label by label nuances of the various artists who have graced the labels over the years. My first observation was how all nine glasses appeared the same dark inky purple beautiful color. The 2000 was yet another amazing glass of wine. Joe (Below) nailed one of the aromas by describing the grinding coffee in the kitchen. I also noted toasted nuts and bread, soil like a garden soil cassis, and berries. No one else mentioned berries but yeah berries. Jammy and chewy in the mouth. Thick and viscous. The right amount of oakiness. Several people mentioned mushrooms or truffles but I did not get that. This was worth the trip from So Cal. Wow.

  • Wine Society Famous Five Tasting - Bordeaux First Growths 2000 & 1990 (Merchant Taylors' Hall, Threadneedle Street, London EC2): Just slightly ighter in appearance than the Lafite. Noticeably less intense on the nose than any of the other wines, showing cassis fruit and some stony minerals - lacks a little focus and definition. A little better on the palate with lovely acidity, dark fruit and then some surprisingly dry tannins on the finish. Undoubtedly a good wine but a little out-classed in this company. 5th out of 5.

  • Famous Five tasting with Jancis Robinson (Merchant Taylors Hall, London): Lively, punchy, blackcurrants and blueberries, oaky, tannic, savoury, minty, powerful - exotic and I liked this a lot

  • Mouton Vertical at Hearth in NYC (Hearth Restaurant): Lots of vanilla, clove. Sweet. Somewhat closed with a sweet core. Different style. If served this blind I don't think I would have pegged it as Bordeaux.

  • Had the opportunity to try it this week against a Lafite vertical and the big 2000 state vintages as well as Mouton 83 and 86. Very dark core, I was surprised on how dark this wine is. Wonderful nose, pencil led and a bit of leather. Dark chocolate, blackberry and a bit of expresso. A very elegant and luxurious wine. I could not believe the structure and texture, very long finish. Not as long as the 82 but the finish challenges the Lafite 2000. An elegant but very sexy moving wine. It over powers anything else I tasted that night. It is surprisingly drinkable 5 years latter. The best wine the state has produced after 82 and an experience imprinted in my mind.

  • Wine Spectator Bordeaux First-Growth Tasting (New York Marriott Marquis): Red, a little thinner than the others in this flight. Nose of burnt toast? Cherries, sweet red raspberries, and cocoa on the palate. A little tart. A little disappointed. Closed period? Off bottle?

  • My former partner dropped in just before 10 o'clock, on his way home from a tasting he had conducted of the 2000 Bordeaux, and carrying a half bottle of the 2000 Chateau Mouton Rothschild which he offered us to taste. The wine had been open for 11 hours. Extremely dark - black purple in colour; aromas full and rich, featuring some dark chocolate, blackberry, roasted fresh ground coffee and a spray of smoky oak; very full bodied, with a tannic frame, which carried beneath the soft fruit; plenty of berry fruit in the flavours; long, long finish; not all there yet, but showing some signs of development.

  • Tasting. Spectacular aromatic start with ripe black fruit, cassis, cigarbox and some background floral notes. Powerful and dense on palate, even if a bit compact or shut down right now in middle. Explosive finish of dense, concentrated black fruit and spice.

  • Tasted at the Bonham's and Butterfields 82 vs. 90 vs. 2000 tasting
Deep purple this full bodied mouton was probably a bit closed at this tasting. The nose gave mostly oaky aromas of vanilla, wood and hints of espresso. It seemed like there was good fruit behind it so perhaps the oak will subside with some time. It was still tannic but with good structure that most of the good 2000's seem to have. Interestingly other tables liked this Mouton and the others much more than our table. I hope it fares better when I open mine in 10-15 years.

  • Farmington Wine Class. Wow! I didn't expect to be served this wine at a $45 wine class at a local community center (along with the '00 Conseillante, '01 Latour, '98 Margaux, and more)!! This is the only 2000 First Growth I've had so far, although I did recently have the Pavie. All I can say is 'Wow'! This is what I want in a young Bordeaux. Dark, almost black, at the core. A bit of a stink on the nose similar to what I associate with Gruaud-Larose. Complex, fascinating aroma with notes of shoe polish, espresso, cassis and lots more. Cedar, sweet black fruit, and a bit of that same funkiness on the palate. Incredible body with a great chewy mouthfeel. Long, long finish. Sexy, drinkable and balanced now, but with the requisite structure for long aging. I wish I was a millionaire, because I would buy a boatload of this wine.

  • Dark red. Super intense aromas of coffee and and cigar box coming out of the glass. Like opening the door to a kitchen where someone is grinding coffee beans. This is thick like marmalede in the mouth, with a seductive and extremely pleasurable caramel sweetness of flavour. Highly defined, luxuriously textured, with every sign of longevity to it, and no relation bewteen the bottle and the liquid, this is simply a stunning wine with a stunning nose and a 65 second finish. Smooooth.

  • Double decanted for 6 hours in the closed decanter.

Beautiful bright and clear dark ruby. Mild woody scent, mild oak, clean and deep aroma of Mouton, dramatic too. Medium to full-bodied, good balance, sharp tannin but not aggressive. Good finished, elegant aftertaste. Same style like 1982 but a little bit short. Classic !!

    ....93+/100....

  • Dark reddish, purple in the glass. The most stunningly beautiful nose. Cigar box, mint, cassis, capucino, coffee and tobacco notes. The wine actually smelled mature. Ferrociously tannic in the mouth, and hugely structured. Powerful and dense, yet seductive and elegant. There was nothing overblown about this wine, but lots of fruit, stuffing for days, and a nice complex character. This didn't have the length of neither Lafite, nor Margaux, but wow anyways.
