interesting nose, popcorn, cream from the barrel ferment, and fruit leaning onto the riper and exotic, like kiwi and pineapple. Let down tremendously by the palate which is ripe, hot and uninteresting. There is no salt or chalky vibrancy in the texture. People comparing this to white burgundy are unqualified philistines who disqualify their own views with such a ludicrous claim. Tasted twice this year. Just to confirm its mediocrity

I didn’t enjoy the last bottle (opened after transport) but this is better. Lighter appearance but powerful on the nose and punches you in the mouth. Takes ages to open up (needs 30+ mins) and then has the expected ripe lime and mineral nose and the taste is big lime (incredible breadth) and very distinctive salty tangy finish. Low acidity but you wouldn’t notice with that salinity. Subtle oak tannins provide texture and add to the long finish. Clearly not Burgundy but like Puligny X Margret River. Everyone wanted multiple pours with garlic chicken. Drink to 2035, and peak in another 3-5yrs. Although classy, I still adore Giaconda Chardonnay more… 94+pts

long and complex, this White Burgundy look-alike is now entering it's plateau of maturity, I'd guess it will stay here for another decade. Vintages like this confirm that this winery's premier chardonnay stands head and shoulders above every chardonnay produced in Australia (and elsewhere in the New World, for that matter) Leeuwin always takes a decade to display its wares, and longer in top vintages like this.... but it is certainly worth the wait.

Grand Cru Chardonnay (The four seasons hotel, the rocks, sydney): Slightly metallic note initially then a little stone fruit but served very cold. With hand heat the fruit ripens and begins to show a little more generosity. In the mouth it has medium plus intensity acidity, lemon and lemon peel, a touch of tertiary honey and butter, all travel long, rather nice.

Wow factor. Wonderful bottle. What a surprise ending this bloody year. Truly ghost in the shell (bottle). Spiced hints of bone fruit, deliciously smoked, Lapsang tea-like on the nose with a touch of butterscotch. Endless complexity. Palate is more exuberant even, like an odalisque ready for an interpretation of famous bell dance but on the tropical side. In spite of this last element this wine needs to stifle and integrate that oak. Perfectly capable of age decades (standing up). Elegant, it will be an aristocrat just with ten years plus. Expensive nowadays but in my humble opinion, deserves every penny.

This 2010 Leeuwin Estate Art Series Chardonnay was served blind in a flight of 2010 White Burgundy. Lemon colour with a green rim. Clean and polished array of citrus and tree fruits. Reductive and waxy with plenty of toasted cream. Slight alcohol finish. Minerals rich, a dense lactic finish. Meursault 1er Cru? 2010? (87/100)

We took our time tonight and were reminded how much more we enjoy this wine when it is given time in bottle, a couple of hours of air and allowed to approach room temperature. It grows fuller, richer and more complex.

Medium deep yellow gold - rich toasted almond, roasted lemon, briny stones - lots going on - palate is quite intense, terrific depth and breadth, with a very long finish - ripe, round, taut, precise, really rides the razor's edge between ripeness and freshness - there is a general sensation of lime rind, nose thru palate thru finish, but strongest on the finish - really alive, this may well have aged for another 20 years, gaining depth all along the way.

Our first bottle of the 2010. Green tint in the glass. Restrained nose. Lime, white peach, spice and a touch of honey. Tight acidity on the finish. Still tasting young and fresh. It has not yet put on noticeable weight. Consistently excellent year after year and it hits the high notes again in this bottle.

This wine showed a beautifully correct green gold colour with great clarity. The nose is fresh with white peach and nectarine, freshly cut Nashi pear, lemon drop and touches of honeysuckle and cashew nuts. The palate has a terrific texture emphasising the fruit and the underlying matiere providing plenty of grip and drive and leading to a fresh lingering finish. A delicious bottle from a line that has never disappointed since Stelvin closures were introduced.

maturing at snail's pace, this is still quite primary, fresh and in need of another 5 years or so to really gain the benefits of cellar time. Lovely new-world array of stone and tropical fruits, cashew nuts and white-flower. A wonderful example of New-World chardonnay, LEAS remains one of the truly great white wines outside France. I leave the remainder until 2025. (screw-cap)

Been an up and down week or so. But this wine, holy cow, this is the tonic.
Freakishly good Chardonnay and only middle aged too - it looks and smells and tastes like it has another 8 years to give, easily. So much class and just a mere hint of flashy. As it should be. It is just right, like a Porsche 911.
NobleRottersSydney - Two Hands + specials (360 Bar & Dining, Sydney): {screwcap, 14%} [Aaron] …following the Beechworth Giaconda really highlights the stylistic differences in this wine, with its developing nose of peaches and cream araomas, sandalwood oak and all-round richness. The full-bodied palate is polished, with a malo sense of richness (although I gather it sees no secondary ferment), buttery fruit, yet not sweet; it has a savoury core pushing through. But the richness and multi-layered texture is hard to resist, that’s for sure. The peach flavours and beautiful oak combine to seduce, that’s for sure; I alternated between this and the Giaconda, and eventually decided this was just that bit more seductive. Not that the 8 year point is the whole story; it might be different a lustrrum hence. Choose between Beethoven sonatas, that’s what you’re doing here.
Such a beautiful wine. The cliché of power and elegance rings true here. Full bodied with a mix of stone and tropical fruits, cashews and some spice. Slightly creamy in texture. Perfect acidity. Lovely.

Degustation Lunch with 'Museum' Wine Flight (Leeuwin Estate, Stevens Rd, Margaret River WA 6285, Australia): Still a very pale gold. Nose is quite muted and subtler than the 2014.....fresh white nuts, fresh hazelnuts, subtle vanilla pod but it got much more open and slightly honeyed when left in the glass for an hour. Palate is much deeper and richer, like a great Montrachet, toasted oak, weight but gracefulness, melted butter, toasted hazelnuts, macadamia nuts, a bit of Crunchie Bar caramel, so many layers, really resonant and contemplative. Almost silence-creating. Great inside your head reverberance and length. I need to buy this to replace my diminishing stash of the 2006 vintage.Wow....94 easy.

I had great hopes for this Chardonnay, since it is one of the benchmarks for this varietal in Australia, and definitely was not disappointed! It is ready to be drunk now with very little decanting, but still has a long life ahead of it if one wants to cellar it.
Immediately after opening the bottle, one could already sense its expressive notes of lychee, lime, avocado and green apple on the nose. But on the palate it was even better, with its 14% structure well hidden by its nice structure, delivering notes of pineapple, green apple, a bit of vanilla and lime. It also boasts a long finish, which fills your mouth for 30+seconds.
In short, if you enjoy colder-weather Chardonnay, this one's for you - it's not a creamy, oak-dominated beast, being instead very refreshing and balanced. A great QPR - it's a wine worth seeking out. 94+ pts.
Medium to deep lemon color. Quite intense aroma of flint, hazelnut, pineapple, lemonade, sweet spices. Round and smoth on palate, this ready to drink medium body beauty delivers concentrated flavour of apricot, mazipan, orange peel, vanilla and oak. Forward and quite long.

Dim Sum Club at Mitzo (Mitzo, Grand Park Orchard): Lovely. This had a beautiful nose of pineapples and melons with a lift of wet florals and coconutty oak - here the wood adding a nice dimension rather than distracting from the rest of the nose. The oak on the palate was a touch more distracting, but it still had a nice clarity and focus to it, with good acidity lancing through bright, ripe yellow fruited flavours. Good finish has a touch of grip to it. A fleshy wine, clearly new world, but nicely balanced nonetheless - classy.

A visit to Margaret River; 12/17/2016-1/1/2017 (Margaret River): During a cellar door visit and lunch at the winery. Probably the best wine of this trip full of under performing wines. Complex nose of lemon zest, mineral, touch of flint, and mint. Fresh and salty texture with an oyster note at the finish. An elegant and aromatically sophisticated chardonnay.

So the question has become. The vintages forward to this one a bright and much more crispy on acids. So there is a wine making style as we go back through. Style change. And this would be right around the time of a wine maker change.

Ahh, so the '11 follow the '10 -- right now both more open fruit expression right off the nose from the '12, '13. And ripe and fully expressive on the palate. And still power packed with acidity.

Delicious tonight with great future potential. The Nose had buttered toast, banana, peach, apricot, pineapple and grapefruit. The palate was rich with racey acidity and excellent fruit clarity. Toasty notes are front and centre at the moment, with grapefruit, Meyer lemon, apricots and macadamia nuts. A lovely broad wine, that is already long, exciting and incredibly pleasurable. This will be a stunner in 5 years time. Great

Medium yellow. Slightly reductive (lees stirring? winemaking?) moderate intensity nose. Clean, well-integrated, with a gorgeous streak of fresh tangerine (slightly milky) threading through the midpalate. Slight vanilla and pale caramel on the palate - very well-melded oak. Medium body, slightly elevated alcohol (I guessed 13.5%, actually 14% and holding it well) and elevated acidity.
The overall impression is light and vibrant, youthful, and uncomplicated. The cool tangerine note is delightful.
Score: Around 9.

Guigal La La dinner (Eddie V's): The style seems quite consistent from vintage to vintage. Ripe yellow fruits, pineapple, lemon curd, noticeable oak, coconut and spicy spices. Very good concentration, ripe yellow fruit driven palate impression, bright acidity and sweet medium long finish that ends with a bit of heat. This seems to age reasonable well and this may need a few more years to integrate oak.

Decanted for 30 minutes. Pale translucent green gold in colour. Oak and alcohol predominant nose. Pineapple, tropical, lemon/ lime palate is a refreshing hit after the reticent nose. Tempered by oak incursion throughout. Medium plus fruit on the right foot to get you back in the mood. Supple medium/ full mouthfeel is a silken sweet delivery thru the mid-palate, minerality freshens, and medium sweet fruit dominates the long enjoyable finish. Easy 94 for complexity and enjoyment, and with extended cellaring and oak mellowing this will fly.

Drink during a family BBQ dinner and this bottle was brought back by my brother in law from the winery. Bright straw yellow in the glass, fresh and restrained on the nose, it is painfully young with an oak dominance nose, surprisingly the oak is not over the top but integrating well and showing aromas of pear, citrus and peach. Palate is lean and fresh, exhibits layered fruits and good depth. Drying finish with a long lingering finish. Lovely! This is already drinking so well now and I have not doubt it has a bright future ahead. Hopefully I can taste again in the future.

Really powerful aromas of toasty oak and citrus fruit. Really powerful and dense on the entry, packed with creamy lemon fruits and a touch of dried pineapple. (Mich&Bo@LangtonsVI) [vertical with 2011] green flinty nose, struck-match and nougat. Somewhat restrained and reserved at this point, with expected viscosity. Finish shows elegant touch of toffee and butterscotch already. Interesting to see how it's developed a year from the last tasting. I somehow still prefer the 2011.

Winter sunlight was the colour for me. On the nose, grapefruit and clementine, the oak on the palate a little dominant for my liking, but the spicy, acidity balanced this. Very long and generous mouthful, it is a very good wine but I'll have two of the Prelude for one of these.

Nose shows white oak initially, but there's a lot of fruit underneath: green apple, lime, salad mix. I though I detected hints of green mango and mint, but it was difficult: the nose is not very open. The palate likewise opens with an overpowering blast of oak. Beyond that, there's a beautiful structure, with milky smoothness and firm, structured acidity. There are flavours of soft caramel fudge, apple, peach, and mango. Lots going for it, but needs time.

I tried this at the Wine Spectator NY Wine Experience. This was simply outstanding. A big surprise for me since I hadn't tried Leeuwin's chards in the past. Tasted twice this time. Spicy oak and lime on the nose. Very coiled and shy at this stage, the palate shows similar qualities to the aromas. The palate builds considerably after a few sips. This wine clearly needs time to build weight and complexity, nice as it is at the moment. Rated 93 at first, then uprated to 94 as the subtle richness became apparent.

To be honest, I can't quite see what the fuss is with this wine. It's a pretty good chardonnay. Very neutral on entry. Subtle savouriness builds to show roasted nuts, lime pith and white nectarine. savoury style, that may need time to blossom. There are so many superb chardonnays in Australia at the moment that, I guess, we're spoilt for choice. I'd look elsewhere, given the price tag.

Perfectly capable of age decades (standing up). Elegant, it will be an aristocrat just with ten years plus. Expensive nowadays but in my humble opinion, deserves every penny.

94+ pts.

Watching the "Uncorked" Finale (Home (Noe st)): The second-most impressive Chardonnay I've had from Australia (the '10 Voyager Estate was amazing!).

Subtle savouriness builds to show roasted nuts, lime pith and white nectarine. savoury style, that may need time to blossom. There are so many superb chardonnays in Australia at the moment that, I guess, we're spoilt for choice. I'd look elsewhere, given the price tag.
