Had next to a 06 Sassicaia, both decanted for 3 hours and consumed over 1. If this was a bit of a disappointment, Sassicaia was not. Without much experience with the two wines, I thought I would get similar styles that would be interesting to evaluate side by side. I was wrong. This was quite linear and extremely Bordeux-like, with tobacco, leather, and cassis, resolved tannins, and in prime, maybe even in decline. For me, the Brett was very obstructive and muted a lot of the fruit. A nice bottle of wine, but not much more and not up to my expectations.

All I can say is wow. Enjoyed this bottle at Restaurant Max in Positano, a favorite in the area - haven’t been to Max in 9 years. Paid 300 euro, a steal! They had an enormous Solaia library. Bold dark purple robe, no bricking and minimal sediment. Perfect harmony here. Beautiful structure and balance. Dark bold fruits. Only 13.5% abv amazingly. Insane depth, just when you think you get it, another layer of depth unfurls. Just spectacular!

Superb Super Tuscans!: Delicious! Mine and the group's WOTN. This could have been mistaken for a nice, well-aged Bordeaux in a blind tasting. Plenty of red and black fruit, earth, tar and herbs. Everything was perfectly integrated, and had the right amount of balance between fruit and tertiary flavors to suit my palate. I suspect this is drinking in its peak window, but it showed no signs of tiring. If you are saving a bottle of this, I would not hesitate to open it when the right occasion arises. 96 points easily, and a profound wine.

Virtual Italy: Super Super Tuscans (Home): Dark red color, 2mm clear edge. Slow-ox for 8 hours and then a 30 minute single decant and into jars for transport. Drank a glass plus over 3 hours. What a fantastic nose, wonderfully alluring in its perfume of fine pencil, ground tobacco, red cherry, tobacco leaf, leather, dried herb, subtle cassis and orange peel. There's an elegance and lift to this that just registers. The palate is quite similar, taking a little more time to coalesce in glass though. Lovely red fruits predominate, though there are veins of darker fruits - black cherry, woven throughout; fine dusty tannins, dried wood, dried herbs, pencil, leather, and impeccable balance to this thoroughly refined medium bodied wine. This is in a good spot, but clearly deserves some air to show at its best now; with many, many years ahead. Just gorgeous and my and group WOTN.

Drank this bottle two weeks ago at the French Laundry. Amazing. Still drinking well with deep notes of rich tuscan Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cab Franc. Cellared well, this could have lasted another 10-20 years. It complimented the 2nd half of our dinner with the lamb and beef.

Deep garnet, with significant rim variation. Strangely, lots of cardboard and lichen fungals on the nose and could hardly detect fruits. There’s a good measure of red cherry and cranberry, and fern, on top of the grey fungals. Was told this wasn’t corked, but rather that it might have been too old and over the hill

Opened up a couple hours prior to leaving for Ciao Bella, took a test pour and slow oxed for about 90 minutes before leaving for the venue. The wine showed fresher on the test pour than later at dinner. The wine had concentration, balance and elegance but it felt a few years past it prime and had that old antique furniture aroma thing going on. So, while serviceably drinkable it fell far short of hopes nor expectations. Based on other's recent experience I was really looking forward to this. This was a recently acquired btl from someone else's cellar where it may not have been ideally stored for drinking 20 years down the line. Oh well. No point in scoring it but it surely wasn't anything in the 91pt+ range.

Pristine cork. Deep red. Impressive nose of red fruit, tobacco, cedar. Big on the mouth with high acidity and slightly bitter finish. Comes together a bit after an hour or two. May improve with more time. Had hoped for more; more well preserved than matured.

Excellent cork, barely soaked a fifth of it's length..,. dark and saturated Burgundy color all the way from the center to the rim. On the nose: cedar, pencil shavings, sous-bois, all spelling the cabernet content of the wine. Very fine: dry tannins, matching acidity, aristocratic... On the palate the wine is much less developed and complex than the nose leads one to believe...The tannins are still pronounced and mouth-puckering, coupled with pronounced acidity. The whole well on its way but far from being seamlessy integrated. Still, a very good mouthful of wine but not fully ready nor ripe . Should make an excellent bottle in 5+ years.. I just hope the tannin does not dry up the rest of the fruit...

Another bottle, same provenance, same storage, same serving treatment as the bottle in my prior note. This bottle was not tired, though there was a lot of earthy tones. This had a lot more red berry in it, Still not the most focused and definitely fully mature. Drink up and hope for the best.

Finally ready for enjoyment in my view, this bottle did not require a decant, and in fact closed up after about an hour. Prior to that point, I was very impressed with the lush flavors of sweet red fruit, mocha and a bit of pepper.

Straight out of the bottle this has a very rounded, plump texture and palate - very alluring. Infused through with earthy notes and now hitting maturity. After a while it started to firm up and become less focussed, but this is still an impressive wine, although I'd struggle to pick it as an Italian.
Drank alongside the 1997. This was almost the opposite to the '97, it was showing its stuff straight out of the bottle, although it was double decanted, wafting it's voluptuous fruit perfume out of the glass, but after a little time it got a bit four square and was a bit dull with no excitement, whether it's because it needs more time I'm not sure, it's an international styled wine, not really for me but interesting to try the vintages side by side.

Opened and decanted for about an hour before we had a go at it. I have to say it pays to wait for this wine. Heavy set and somewhat disjointed at first, the wine tidied itself up after an hour to reveal a smoky, chocolaty beauty albeit of still generous proportions. I would still go for something slimmer myself (size 8 maybe?) but I'm sure there are many who will find this big fleshy one a winner!

I seldom come out to say I don't like a wine, as I think most wines reflects someone's sincere and best effort to express what is possible from a plot of grapes. So even if something isn't exactly to my taste, I almost always find something to like about most well-made wines. So in this regard, I regret to say the 1999 Solaia isn't one such wine. Black and viscous in decanter, the blackberry and forest floor notes would have made for a beautiful nose, were they not submerged in a vat of cream. On the palate, the oak imparted an overbearing milky chocolaty fatness that made me feel like I was in some sort of vinous sumo wrestling match. I know it's a Solaia and lots of folks really like this. But for me, Sassicaia and Tignanello are more likely to deliver real drinking pleasure.

Goosefoot (Chicago): Nice nose of leather, dark fruit and a bit of earth. Some plum. A touch medicinal on the palate and lacked "soul". This rounded out after a couple hours in the glass and was much more enjoyable with food--particularly the duck course.

Very nice. Still plenty left in the tank. This thing was classic Italian all the way - big, bold and sultry. Velvet in the mouth. Loads of red fruit and secondary notes of tar, ash and smoke. Wonderful aroma. Very nice - one bottle left which will get 3-5 years of cellaring before I try.

Bouteille et bouchon en parfait état. Non carafé. Ouvert 90 minutes avant consommation, puis bue durant 120 minutes. Couleur prune violette. Nez de menthol, de cassis, de myrtilles. En bouche, le vin est comme de la soie, avec de la structure, il montre une belle constitution et finit sur une légère âpreté, distinctive du sangiovese.

This was the wine I was waiting to try tonight. I have always thought these were over-priced and that their sibling Tignanello could best them in certain vintages. It was good, but the Sangiovese was pushing over the other Bdx varietals. some leather was noted and a mix of red and dark fruit. Tannins were firm and didn't let up with air. The oak was still needing integration, even with this long in the bottle. I don't think oak should be this noticeable at this stage in a wines life. Still as class act. Thanks to Dennis for bringing a pair of this, which scratched my itch and confirmed my suspicions. Glad I have stock of Ornellaia and Sassicaia. They are the better aia's IMHO.

One of the best Italian wines I have tried so far. Very smooth and silky on the mouth, a complex wine, pleasant cheese aroma on the nose, lots of dark fruits, intense, and it revealed some herbaceous notes after some time in the glass. Finish was awesome and long. An outstanding Italian wine indeed!

Approaching a wine this precious, I carefully popped and poured this into the decanter and allowed to air for only 1 hour. Dark brown colour. The advice of my sommelier friend was that temperature control is essential. Our excitement already stoked by the earlier wines, we gave up waiting for 18 degrees Celsius and started pouring out the Solaia at 17 degrees Celsius. Nose was muted, but could still make out the Tuscan earthiness and French oak. Into the mouth, the Solaia lovingly caressed the palate with its mature flavours of blackberries, cherries, plum. Round and balanced, in my humble opinion, this wine is already in the prime of its drinking window. The smooth long finish just kept enticing my lips back to the glass. Resisted the urge to gulp. As the temperature crept up, the nose opened up and the deeper complexities of the fruits started to show up. So beautiful and elegant. In a class of its own. Clearly WOTN. Bellissimo!

What a great vintage for Solaia! This '99 is a really amazing bottle. Sure, it is a 90's Supertuscan style wine; the use of French oak is evident. But it is a wine of great personality and with a clear connection with the territory. Great extraction evident since the first look at the glass where, the liquid is impenetrable dark garnet. Immediately after opening, the nose is vegetal, with tobacco, freshly cutted grass, earth. 2 hours after opening the bottle the fruit aromas stand above the others. Blackberry and blueberry jam. Violet, mixed dried flowers. Toasted notes. Complex and intense. At palate powerful and smooth, with its velvety tannins, and very pleasant acidity. Round. Perfectly balanced. Incredibly long finish. Can last for many more years.

Antinori Solaia Vertical with Luigi Fioretti (Handford Wines, London): The most balanced vintage. Full lush wine in all aspects, colour, nose, palate. Dark red in colour, uplifting nose , very perfumy, floral and with evident oak. Chunky core of fruit, good extraction with a solid back bone. An Epic wine , still a baby but with lots of future ahead. 95+ now but could well be in the high 90s as it evolves. Wait 5yrs.

Breeders' Cup XXIX; 11/2/2012-11/3/2012: Decanted 7 hours. A more restrained bottle than 8/28/12, perhaps given too long of a decant. Initially dry oak stuck out on the nose, but this blew off after the first hour or so. Nose has blackberry and plum, but the fruit has a mature character to it--mellow, lower acid--with graphite mineral, herbs, and some vanilla edges. Palate follows with blackberry and plum, creamy mouthfeel, mocha, dried green herbs, leading to a solid finish. Next time would limit to a 3-hour decant.

Great note by Papies. Decanted 3 hours. Blackberry, black plum, creamy background, graphite, black licorice, dried Tuscan herbs on the nose. Oak influence is evident but complementary--no distraction, but, yes, it could integrate further. Similar notes on the medium- to full-bodied palate, still youthful, restrained, but balanced, nicely concentrated, and more expressive each glass, picking up earth and coffee bean with air. Long black fruit finish.

Decanted for a good 2 hours and felt like it needed it. Dark dense colour. Good balance on the nose , sweet dark fruit, oaky notes, some floral note. Lush, well round and very much alive with lots of depth on the palate and this is a wine of serious potential. Once the oak assimilates further this will be a 98+. 96 at the moment and what a wine. If you can wait 5yrs this will be a mesmerising wine.

Smells of bolo de mel stored for some time in a pharmacy. Med+ body, youthfully tannic, slightly spicy. Dark berries on the palate, moderate acidity, good, even length. Slighlty spicy finish, very tannic and slightly bitter aftertaste. It tasted rather lively at cellar temperature, but when retasting it warmer, the alcohol seemed quite high.

nose - blackberry, blueberry, coffee mouth - a big wine, with some interesting secondary flavors, as well as big fruit, but outdone by bigger tannins. moreover this lacked a bit of that acidic zip that i'm looking for to keep these big wines in balance. vibrancy started to fade after a few hours in the decanter. decidedly underimpressed.

A bottle I had in March was lovely, but it was not decanted. The decanting that was done last night smoothed out the rough edges and produced a seamless wine. It was supple with dense, dark fruit, smoky with good acidity and moderately tannic. Pairing of the night was with the roasted rack of lamb I ordered at Alto, and a close second was my friend's sliced sirloin steak with a wine marrow sauce.

In some respects, I found the nose to be Bordeaux-like with band aid and pencil lead. The first thing I noticed on the palate was an earthiness with dark cherry and minerals, and very stiff tannins, and a lovely finish. After a short time, the tannins softened and it became a very easy drinking and enjoyable wine.

Had a 4cl sample at Wine & View winebar. Bottle was opened the day before and sealed with vacuum. Young looking. Very nice nose with some flowers, a bit of leather and red berries. Quite tight on the palate. Firm tannins and quite acidic, but nice flavours of red cherries, a bit of mild spices and flowers again (roses?). Very good but I don't know if it's worth the price. Will keep for many years but probably not improve significantly.

Consumed late on a Friday evening in a state of semi-exhaustion, but who am I refuse the generous offer of a '99 Solaia at any time of day or night? Color still quite dark. Attractive but subdued aromas of cassis, a little tobacco maybe and some minty tones. Impression of real elegance both in nose and body, smoothly textured with the breed of a top Bordeaux, and certainly much more Bordeaux-like than like a new world cab. The blend here is cabernet sauvignon, sangiovese, and a little cab franc. This undoubtedly would have benefited from some time in decanter, but it was already 11:15 and we weren't going to wait. Got better, riper (though not even within shouting distance of overripe) fleshier and more attractive with each glass. No need to hurry or worry about this beauty.

O mais "italiano" dos provados. Aromas intensos, abertos, revelando alcaçuz, cedro, tabaco, frutos escuros e mentol. Final longo e recheado. Excepcional.

Solaia - vertical (98-03): 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Sangiovese e 5% Cabernet Franc. NM. 93-94pts. E/E.

Earthy with very subdued red fruit. Some anise and vanilla as well. Big but soft tannins. Seemed tired. Not at all like other Solaias I have had.

Quite tight on the palate. Firm tannins and quite acidic, but nice flavours of red cherries, a bit of mild spices and flowers again (roses?). Very good but I don't know if it's worth the price.
